LD38 — A Small World

Little Mouse Planet by Frodewin 2017-05-15T02:01:43Z

Cool to see scratch being used! I couldn't figure out how to eat food and so I starved the first two times I tried to play :( I had to look through the scratch editor to figure out what control I needed to press.

Astro-Bastard Drunken Rampage by Zarkith 2017-05-16T03:05:25Z

Definitely needed more to be a bit more like a game but the graphics are nice

Finding your loved one by Laaph 2017-05-11T00:55:05Z

Cute graphics

As you said, the physics is very janky and the monster hit boxes are off. It also seems pretty short -- it could do with some more levels, even if there were no new mechanics added. I imagine that was due to time constraints :P The game seems unfinished at the moment but I think if those were changed it'd make a big difference.

Also, game mechanic wise, I'm confused as to why being hit makes you lose cookies... it seems like either that would make you get stuck in some places, or it wouldn't matter at all because you just get more when you defeat the enemy. Maybe having health would make more sense for that.

Overall, not a bad little game prototype. Good luck for next LD!

No One's Planet by Kate Kligman 2017-05-15T01:17:20Z

Pretty cool that you made a telnet game :)

I think as other have said, the game itself didn't have that much going for it though.

Caelium Alpha by jishenaz 2017-05-14T00:51:49Z

It's an interesting little toy, shame it doesn't have much 'game' to it, as far as objectives go. I played something similar at a NASA visitor center recently :)

Damn it, Don't Die! by RafaelSPBarbosa 2017-05-10T04:17:01Z

any chance for a mac build?

The Dwarf Planet by keckles 2017-05-14T01:10:06Z

I agree with others, needs more instructions. One tip I find helpful -- get people to play your game during the competition, and see if they can figure it out, without you telling them what to do. It'll help a lot for making the game understandable. Ideally they should know what to do without reading any instructions outside your game

CarefulSaurus by gene-z 2017-05-16T04:14:43Z

Some hopefully constructive criticism:

- The game is impossibly hard! It goes for too long and it's too hard to avoid cars and people. - Even if you could avoid everything, it would be a bit boring to just do the same thing for 5 minutes or so? Making it start easy and adding more variety would be useful - The parallax effect is backward (buildings at the back should be smaller and move faster)

I'd recommend getting someone to play your game during the competition, and they might be able to help you find some of the difficulty issues.

I managed to win though by going in the air somehow :P

Smalltrek by impbox 2017-05-14T01:39:31Z

This is a nice puzzle game :)

My Small World by pandademic42 2017-05-16T03:40:50Z

Cute game! I found my mum, and then didn't know what to do so I started mashing buttons, and then I was like "whoa". Could be nice to see this concept extended into a longer game, but with the same whimsical tone.

Music is great too!

My Small World by pandademic42 2017-05-16T03:41:16Z

Also, looks like this game is mac only, but it's made in Unity so you should be able to create a windows build. It'd be a good idea to do that because most people won't be able to play your game otherwise!

It Seemed so big... by lozzadawg 2017-05-13T20:40:28Z

This game is bit confusing, I think it needs clearer instructions and some clear goal. Maybe like a tutorial thing that works you through the different options? And yeah, I couldn't figure out how to make technology either :/

I think this could be fleshed out into something interesting though! Not sure if you did this, but it's great to try to get feedback on your game during the compo so you can find what parts people find too hard or don't understand

What Do You Mean The Planet Is In Danger And All I Have Is This Deck Of Cards? by Zach Bracken 2017-05-16T03:28:09Z

Not sure how much strategy there is in this game... seems like the best thing to do is to always invest in attack, and just heal yourself when you take damage.

I think if there were different enemies that you played against in order (so you have to beat one to unlock the next one), and they required different strategy the game would be more interesting

Planetary Assault Self Defense! by alpenter 2017-05-16T04:57:37Z

This game is really fun and surprisingly relaxing. I think the cannons seem to be overpowered, but I didn't mind just chilling out to the music and watching a whole bunch of cannonballs fly across the screen.

Nice one!

trapped chest.png

(just kidding)

Neat game, obviously I was looking for the upgrade mechanic which looks like there wasn't time for. Classic Ludum Dare things :)

You did a great job in creating a good vibe as you go deeper, nice job on that!

Signal Dungeon by rhewid 2026-04-22T15:28:14Z

Interesting seeing the other comments - I didn't find the game too hard. I definitely enjoyed the wall-jumping mechanic which almost felt unintentional? But feeling like I was cheating the game made it fun haha.

It did feel a little bit slow though - the jump speed is slow and the overall moment speed of the character is a bit slow. When I died, it felt like it took a while to get back to where I was.

I think the other area that comes to mind would be visual polish - it's got a lot of good pieces like the pixel art tiles, but maybe the grey background could be replaced with something that's ties the space together.

Anyway, this is still a great game, especially for compo! Nice job with all the level design -- felt like a good length of game.

Great music. Loved how there was multiple difficulty modes. Really good!

Short-Range Robot by AJISBOSS 2026-05-08T19:52:04Z

My main tip would be if you can, try to get people to play test your game during the jam so that you're able to adjust the difficulty to make it more accessible for people! Because yes I agree with others, the difficulty is too hard. Gave a solid few attempts.

Signal-flag Shuffle by HacksawUnit 2026-04-20T20:33:01Z

Stumbled across this on itch! I think I agree with folks about how I didn't really understand how to progress past the 0/2 and what the extra flags meant...

I like the little characters though! Fun vibes :)

And overall this felt quite well polished, so nice job with that!

Signal-flag Shuffle by HacksawUnit 2026-04-20T20:43:02Z

oooooh I get it now. Ok, the realization of figuring things out was nice :)

SIGNAL:D by FireFish 2026-05-09T00:55:12Z

Tried to sneak in a quick rating before the deadline, but not sure I'll make it far enough into the game to give it a proper rating.

My one piece of feedback is I'd try to make the game more "snappy", get people into the core of the game quickly and then have the dialog afterwards. Though I do like the dialog and the way it's written!

Conceptually, I like this game a lot! Also, glad to have some non english speakers part of Ludum Dare! Hope you stick around.

Petalgrams by chelC 2026-05-05T03:01:07Z

Nice game! I sucked at it lol

Signal from the Center by renovatio 2026-05-03T02:20:16Z

Make sure to mention that your game is windows only!

RESPECT by LoHii 2026-04-22T04:58:24Z

Ha! Like how the other players are part of the game! I made a somewhat similar game in a previous Ludum Dare. Neat way to bring in a competitive aspect pretty quickly

If I was making one changed it'd be... maybe tweaking how jumping worked, instead of punishing the player if they mess up, just giving the boost if they got the timing right. Not saying what you added was bad though, I like how I added a significant skill challenge and something to get good at

Signaling Home by TinySalad 2026-05-05T02:44:00Z

I beat the game!! Maybe one of the few people to figure it out, looking at the comments.

Took me a while to understand that the "papers please" and similar dialogs were stuff that people didn't like. I seems like spamming that is a pretty decent strategy anyway haha. But once I realized that, I tried to play without it, and finding a good strategy was fun.

Great job with the signalling mechanic, felt really good and fitting for the theme!

I died once, when I clicked the trade button incorrectly on purpose to see what would happen. Sort of curious to see what happens if I intentionally send bad signals to aliens.

I think adding more clear instructions to the game would help people enjoy this more. It was fun when I figured it out, but I can see that a lot of people stumbled on this.

Also, cool that you programmed it in C!

Tiny Signal Lost by Strega 2026-04-22T00:57:34Z

Nice! I like that you put speedrun sutff into the game. That last level was mean haha :)

Great art, well polished, and nice job!

Nice game!

Shiplogging by CreeperXD 2026-05-03T04:43:36Z

Best use of the theme of the games I've played so far. Pretty hard, I only got 1 right lol. I think I should get half points for getting at least some information... But I enjoyed role-playing as someone who was terrible at their job :P

Cable Connector LLC by Jezzamon 2026-04-20T19:43:55Z

@jpat @oadt @darkshadow Oh! looks like I accidentally opted out of... ALL the categories. That's a mistake. Feel free to rate in those categories too (each category you leave a rating in boosts your game more).

AND @darkshadow, looks like you were close! The boss changes expression when it has half health

Cable Connector LLC by Jezzamon 2026-04-21T05:30:35Z

@darkshadow @zyertdox Hey, if you want to see the ending, I just uploaded a version to my website that skips straight to the boss fight, but lowers the boss's health, so you should be able to beat it! https://jezzamon.com/cable-connector-boss/

Cable Connector LLC by Jezzamon 2026-04-22T15:29:38Z

@rosypenguin Thanks for playing it! Yeah you're right, visual feedback on hits and subtitles would definitely be good to have. I'll add it to the post-compo build for sure!

Cable Connector LLC by Jezzamon 2026-04-24T15:33:19Z

@lereveur Oh! I never ran into the problem of multiple keys not working at the same time. Maybe that's related to your keyboard? That would definitely make things harder -- I just hold up most of the time during the boss fight.

And @lereveur / @local-minimum thanks both for playing! If you want to see the ending, I did add a link to a version that jumps you straight to an easier boss fight!

Cable Connector LLC by Jezzamon 2026-04-24T15:46:00Z

@local-minimum Oh and I appreciate your video! I 100% agree with all your feedback - definitely would've added more things like health bars, subtitles and alternative controls, if I had a little more time :')

Cable Connector LLC by Jezzamon 2026-04-29T05:22:06Z

@wouter52 @lohii Totally agree on the bullet feedback, my post-compo build has visual feedback for when the shots hit and it helps a lot. Hopefully next time I can carve out a bit more time for polish at the end!

Cable Connector LLC by Jezzamon 2026-04-29T05:24:44Z

@blinry Thanks for playing! As always, there was my idea for the game and then what I actually implemented... I had a few more ideas for the cables & different signal types, but not enough time in a compo game :P

This chick needs to buy better equipment...

The Last Frequency by strong99 2026-05-03T03:06:33Z

Nah in all seriousness, great game! The art is really nice. I think the game is pretty straight forward, unlike other people I found it easy to understand what was going on.

If I was suggesting changes, it would be more things to be more immersive, like more sound effects while fixing things, or maybe maybe things suddenly break instead of slowly getting bad and that's a sound you can hear.

Seeing the sparks at the door was pretty scary, nice job with that too :)

Also on my playthrough the bad guys broke in and hit me with their shrink ray :( :(

Screenshot 2026-05-02 195732.png

🗦◎🗧 by torcado 2026-04-22T15:47:37Z

Yeah - I think I agree that uh some text explaining the game would be good - it took me a while to understand what was going on.

I liked the flow of the game! Well polished as usual!

Signal Survival by mrks 2026-05-03T03:42:56Z

I had the input challenges too, refreshing the game seemed to fix it. After dying and restarting the input didn't work.

I ran into a strange bug the first time I played, where on level 2, the recharge rate for my stamina got swapped, so my stamina charged really quickly and got used up really slowly. I think that felt more fair :stuck_out_tongue:

Both times I played, I got stuck on level 2 though -- there were no more birds left for me to rescue but I wasn't progressing. Didn't seem like there was anything I could do. I tried twice.

I found the powers a little hard to understand, seemed like I was constantly close to dying so I didn't feel I had much space to try things out.

Also, for the music, I found it the instruments a bit jarring, and the continuous beat is a little too repetitive I think. So my suggestion for next time would be to add maybe some chord progress or something to give the same a bit more structure / rhythm to be less repetitive

On the plus side, the bird graphics are nice! Good job with those!

Volcano Crisis by LeReveur 2022-04-21T01:37:03Z

Glad you had fun! If I was suggesting changes, the two changes would be:

- Add better instructions into the game. You could also have made the instructions more clear on the Ludum Dare page, it was a little hard to figure out exactly what was going on. - Add some sound effects! Something simple (and not annoying lol) could add a lot to the game, and doesn't take too long to add.

Volcano Crisis by LeReveur 2022-04-21T02:05:19Z

Oh yeah, P.S. if you want to make your website use HTTPS, a quick way to do that is to set up cloudflare as a proxy! That's what I did with my website, doesn't require you to tweak how your server works.

Fire Hazard by Fupi 2022-04-21T05:44:36Z

Well made, and well polished! Yep, agree with what others said that the difficulty felt a bit too easy when playing the endless mode. I liked the tutorial though!

Well done!

Kitastrophe by Jezzamon 2022-04-06T06:34:46Z

@wren-erickson @defrag @lb01 @william-corrin @milq @lereveur Hi all! Thanks for your interest in playing the game! I fixed up my server issues and now the game is playable on itch.io! Would love if you could rate it!

If you're curious, the main thing I was missing was setting up the certificates for HTTPS, I have hosted multiplayer games like this before but didn't have to do the HTTPS part at the time. Wasn't too complicated to set up once I got it working.

Kitastrophe by Jezzamon 2022-04-06T06:35:44Z

Also a shame that 2 folks have already rated it before it was playable, but I guess that happens :/

Kitastrophe by Jezzamon 2022-04-06T23:15:44Z

Thanks for the heads up! Yeah I noticed that too. Grrr

Kitastrophe by Jezzamon 2022-04-07T11:18:39Z

@tescoone @onnofal It's back up again! Looks like my server logic is buggy somehow and I just have to restart it occasionally lol

Kitastrophe by Jezzamon 2022-04-09T23:15:22Z

@blinry thanks for the heads up! It's working again! :sweat_smile:

Kitastrophe by Jezzamon 2022-04-10T01:19:08Z

@poshdan @shreemp Yep, the server crashed for a moment there. It should be up now though!

Kitastrophe by Jezzamon 2022-04-10T01:21:09Z

@skleembof Yeah, I suppose I didn't communicate this too well but the idea I had in mind was more of a tag in and out system, where as people play they add a few minutes of distraction, and then other people can jump in to add extra time too! You don't actually need to play it for 20 minutes to get a score of that long.

Kitastrophe by Jezzamon 2022-04-10T06:15:56Z

@adamk33n3r @shreemp @papabirb lol yeah I saw you guys pushing up the cat and was very confused! I did not realize that was possible so it was pretty funny seeing that happen :laughing:

Dr. Tantalus Quest for World Domination by sparked99 2022-04-10T00:11:57Z

I see, so the hero is meant to always win? I got this message which wasn't clear if it was a mistake or intentional. If it was intentional, it probably would've been good to be more clear to make the joke more obvious

Overall, the gameplay felt a bit too simple, but it was also funny just shooting the hero point blank, so I enjoyed that :P

The Last Question. by RarefactionQ 2017-08-04T15:00:00Z

Hey! You should consider hosting this on itch.io if it's a web game, instead of having a download link. Many more people will play it then :)

Sadly I can't rate as I only use chrome :(

Stargust by eggnog 2017-08-02T15:03:54Z

Hey, you should add some gifs to the ludum dare page!

Stargust by eggnog 2017-08-02T15:06:36Z

As far as the game goes: Very nice looking graphically! It's fun to move around as a cloud and such.

But yeah, not having any sound hurt it a bit. It's not too hard to add some basic ones during the jam, it's worth doing that at some stage.

The game itself was kinda confusing because I'm not sure how you survive the missile? Seems like it destroys the battery every time.

Winding Woods by tybantarnusa 2017-08-02T14:43:51Z

Looks like a unity game, why not add some other builds? I don't have a windows machine to play this :/

V.E.S.T.A.L.E. by kromeboy 2017-08-14T02:42:04Z

A tip for next time: Add sound effects! You can do it fairly quickly so it doesn't take away too much time, by using something like BFXR that lets you make your own, or as this is a jam game you can use free sound effects from different places (I typically go to freesound.org)

ULTIMATE PROSELYTISM & MIRACLES SIMULATOR 2017: THE MOVIE THE GAME by Reuh 2017-08-18T01:25:02Z

This game had a lot in it but none of the gameplay itself was good to be honest... It's still a nice Ludum Dare game and I guess in interested me enough to get all the way through it. But all the platforming was very mediocre, and waiting and clicking on the things didn't really work out

Big Mommy is Watching (Over) You! by Epono 2017-08-04T16:12:41Z

"POST LDJAM fixes : Reduced the health of hackers. Hit them once and they’ll let you be."

Game balancing post jam is against the rules 😬

Feel free to add a separate post-compo link but the game should stand as it was when you finished it (more clarification here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/false-game/compojam-done-play-and-rate-games)

Big Mommy is Watching (Over) You! by Epono 2017-08-04T16:24:58Z

Ok cool :) When I first opened the page, it wasn't updated I think.

Like the graphics!

I think level-design wise I'd prefer it if there was less backtracking and a more obvious direction of where you needed to go. It felt a little frustrating when you go far and then have to go all the way back...

You'll need to enable flash on some browsers. Not much I can do to control that, except that I may consider porting to Javascript/HTML5 (shouldn't be too hard with how I programmed this)

Yeah, sorry about the buying stuff bug! I actually fixed that yesterday but didnt get around to updating the game link. I'll upload the fixed version now

PoweRL by Steve Johnson 2017-08-05T16:00:04Z

Amazing! You and I made very similar games :P

Mechanics wise, I think the game needed some extra sense of progression. It's be cool if there was some goal you're working towards, like some unlockable to buy or like, a different type of level after every 8 or something (like spelunky).

The music was good but I felt like it was a little bit too chill? Not sure whether it fit the vibe of the game. But it was a good song.

I agree with you about the graphics, in that the pixel art is nicer, but there are some things you could probably do to make the vectory art nicer as well. One thing that can help is to design the graphics around a colour scheme/colour palette. If you do some googling you can find some nice looking ones and then base the game around that. Also visual effects like bloom and lens aberration can help too, if you can do them.

Also nice to see a Swift game. I like Swift 😁 Shame it's not very cross-platform 🙁

Robot Guy by Neato 2017-08-12T03:14:58Z

I agree with the others in that there's some balance or tutorial type thing needed to make this work better. Maybe if it was split into smaller levels with a progression between them it would work nicer.

A Miner Inconvenience by Nick Rafalski 2017-08-02T14:42:04Z

Not bad. The controls were a bit awkward on a laptop having to click the button while using WASD. Keyboard controls would work as well.

But yeah, this game needs a lot more juice, I think! It's hurt from not having sound effects or music. Pretty easy to make some using SFXR or something. And then I'm thinking like, splodey particle effects and something panic inducing when you start getting low on power.

The voice over was amusing, but it felt too verbose at times.

Maybe at a deeper level, the core gameplay mechanic of getting to a whole bunch of checkpoints works for a ludum dare game, but it's not really interesting enough if this was a stand alone game, say. Polish might be able to help, but it doesn't really answer the question of "why should I play this game when there are all these other ones". Something innovative would help :)

Running Out of Power Rangers by beardogames 2017-08-04T15:11:01Z

Amusing :)

The actual game feels a bit too frantic to make it seem like you have control.

The game also crashed the second time I tried to play it 😕

Running Out of Power Rangers by beardogames 2017-08-04T15:11:55Z

Oh, also this was hurt a bit from no sound too. Sound effects are pretty easy to make, really. You can use SFXR for some basic ones

Mobile Charger by cablay 2017-08-14T02:32:04Z

Haha, this game is pretty hilarious. I love how you just become a weird ball of electronics.

I think it was too hard to stay alive, maybe if grabbing stuff gave you a bigger battery boost it would work better. Also, it wasn't really clear how you went about grabbing stuff (by just walking into people).

I laughed a lot when I glitched out and shot into the sky, and then the whole screen started shaking.

Nice one!

So some tips if you want to see the whole game without real world consequences:

- You can post the secret link to your itch.io game if you don't want to *actually* publish it - You can get past the social media part by providing any twitter or facebook link, actually.

That said... if you actually do those things you're a champion!

Pet Overload by Jonathan50 2017-12-20T06:40:30Z

Cute game. Music / SFX / Some little animations would make a big different here (not sure if you can do like, squash and stretch in your framework but they're a quick way to make graphics look nice without drawing stuff).

Also, here's how you do movement: Store the state of each key, when it's pressed be like `leftKey = TRUE` and when it's released by like `leftKey = FALSE` and then have some code run every frame and be like `IF leftKey is TRUE then like character.x -= movespeed`. And if you're feeling fancy / want it to look nice you should actually make that accelerate instead of instantly change, but that's the general idea

Sim Defence by VinegarLove 2018-05-13T03:38:37Z

Nice first LD! I hope you learnt a bit from it!

Seems like you were probably short on time so you didn't get to get to everything you wanted (like me haha) so maybe game suggestions aren't as useful because you probably would've done more had you had time! BUUUT in terms of the game, I'd say it wasn't super clear which graphic corresponded to what when the game was running. Also a quick polish thing you can do with a short period of time is add in a title screen and some simple in-game instructions, they add more to the game feeling like a full game :)

Sim Defence by VinegarLove 2018-05-13T03:39:24Z

Oh also, despite not being quite finished, this game has a lot of charm to it :)

Collective Memories: An Idle Walking Simulator by lcossette 2018-04-29T05:02:37Z

Great concept! I wasn't too sure what was.

I'd say the big lacking thing for this was the mood/vibe. Some music would've helped there, along with some graphics if you could make those :P

Black-Crops: Tactical Farming by JaredEvans_Neumont 2018-05-13T04:43:56Z

This is a well done game!

My main thought from playing it is that I felt like the different characters powers were hard to work together. Like, at no point did I have a moment of like "Ohh!! I can do THIS clever thing!" It'd be cool if there was some thing you could do maybe seemed overpowered where you could use all the powers together in a clever way, and the player experienced that early on. Like, maybe each week they have different powers, and you need to figure out the best way to use them, and at the start it's really obvious but then later you have to try harder.

The game could probably use some difficulty tweaks too.

I also felt while the graphics worked, if they code across as more "hard core" it would've added to the humour/dissonance more

But yeah this is a solid game, nice concept and execution!

Also, props for the pun, it rules hahah.

@incobalt Ok, I fixed the networking stuff! You can give it another try if you want!

ULTRA BAE by Jezzamon 2018-04-28T16:54:56Z

@Local Minimum yeah I definitely lost a bit of time learning new stuff during this jam. Which I don't regret, but meant that both part of the game aren't as fleshed out really, so yeah baeder is more of a weird weapon select screen at the mo. Maybe in the post-compo one I'll expand on that a little more

ULTRA BAE by Jezzamon 2018-05-13T04:17:45Z

@been Yeah sadly I couldn't figure out how to not apply the shader to the text in the compo timespan. And seeing as I have a small screen the shader is probably a lot more performant for me.

Groovy Beat Shooter by racebennon 2018-05-07T05:53:19Z

Great idea, I think it needed more 'game' to it. Also it's pretty hard! Normally I'd want to have the bullets be something I react to but the character moves quite slow and the bullets are super fast. Maybe something you could've done is include a rhythm heaven type thing where there are audio cues just before the enemies fire, and then give the player a better window to move out of the way.

Niiiice one!! I found it pretty hard from the third level onwards, maybe if the turrets stayed disabled for longer it would've helped a bit!

Also as a FYI, you're only meant to fix bugs that are entirely game-breaking for the jam version, and for other bugs treat them as post-compo, but I'm eh about that rule anyway :P

Boring RPG by Number6406 2018-04-29T20:53:10Z

Yeah probably the most lacking thing here is instructions on what the different stats do. You could add that to the game description if you wanted!

I experimented a little by opening/closing the game but it seemed like strength was the only thing worth investing in really. I think this game needs more balance in terms of making the different options worth choosing and giving people enough choice to experiment with the different options.

Nanashi by JSD 2018-04-29T21:28:47Z

Heads up, it's not great form uploading a ludum dare game on a platform that forces people to watch ads :) Usually if you wanted to do that, you should upload it on an ad-free place as well as whatever site you want to put it on

Nanashi by JSD 2018-04-29T23:07:53Z

@jsd no prob!

So I got ahead to playing this. It's a nice concept, I think I agree with people that the controls made it really way too hard for me :( the 45 degree offset and super slidey-ness made it hard. I was using a keyboard too, maybe it would be less slidey with a controller depending on how you programmed that.

Graphics are cool, music was nice and set the tone of the game well

A guess a good way to catch things like this is to have someone play test the game during the competition -- family members can be helpful, or alternatively people you find on IRC/discord.

Dissident Manager 2018 by kernel-panic 2018-05-13T03:31:16Z

Interesting idea, but I think this something that gives the player more control in terms of how they're going for points, and some obvious win condition to strive for. Maybe having a level based system would work?

Don't Pet The Alien! by JohnnyR 2018-05-13T04:33:35Z

Interesting idea, a shame you didn't get to adding in the main mechanic for it. Obviously time is a big constraint, so maybe next time it'd be good to prioritise getting a basic game loop up over some of the graphics and sound effects? You probably could have left out having different rooms too until later.

I also had some UI bugs on my device, the settings didn't seem to properly go away, they just hovered in front of the arrow keys haha

Good luck for future Ludum Dares!

PIXELTON: ONE OF US by epb9000 2018-05-15T06:00:55Z

PIXELTON: ONE OF US by epb9000 2018-05-15T06:50:50Z

Ok, I just played it! Cute little game! Probably the most obviously missing things mechanics wise is more player feedback in terms of when they get hit, and how far in the level they are. I'd also probably go with a lighter background instead of black so it didn't contrast with the drawings too harshly. Still, pretty good for such a short timeframe :)

wow, this was a really fun game! It surprised me actually!

It was hurt a little by the lack of sound, and the skybox probably could use some improvement seeing as it's 90% of what you see.

In the version I played, the controls for turning were pretty delayed, which made it quite hard to play. Also I played on a mac so I can confirm it works pretty well there

``` f = () => { doCommand('pit'); doCommand('refuel'); doCommand('tires'); doCommand('drive'); doCommand('left') } setInterval(f, 100) ```
I actually had a lot of fun playing this game, even if I didn't play it the way it was intended. Nice one!!
Also the showHelp function is unimplemented which I find somewhat amusing. I struggled with entering the pit when I first played it actually, I think that's because I turned again without realising it. Also this game starts lagging A LOT when you actually make it far, I had to go into the dom and delete some stuff.
LD43 — Sacrifices must be made
Platform43 - Die to progress! by Firesplash Entertainment 2018-12-24T00:42:49Z
I played the jam version, and yeah ran into the dying twice issues you talked about -- shame you couldn't fix that during the compo! But on the whole that didn't bother me all that much.
I felt the jumping and movement was a bit off, it felt a little slow not that responsive? Also there are a lot of jumps that you can almost but not quite make, it's a little frustrating getting really close but keeping dying. Maybe if the jump distance was increased (or even decreased) so that you have less narrow misses it'd improve the feel of the game.
Also, maybe a better way to make the mechanic work would be if you lost a life but landed immediately on the platform, rather than dying and having the game continue to scroll? It was a bit weird having the music reset and everything.
I found it interesting there was a lot around the game like highscores and a decent menu system, but I think the gameplay itself could use a bit more polish, at the moment it's a fairly minimal endless runner without all that much gameplay to it. Still, impressive you could set up the highscores during the competition!
Fistful of Sacrifices by BloodyOrchidDC 2018-12-18T20:00:43Z
Hahah this is an awesome game. I love much you can mess with your stats and change the game. First time I went for spread, then I went for quickly firing bullets.
This game was pretty hurt by the lack of sound though. Next time, there are a bunch of sound effect generators you can use (sfxr is the main one I think of), I think just having some simple sound effects would make a big difference :)
Overall, really nice game!
Hell Well by Incredible Ape 2018-12-18T20:06:20Z
Neat little game!
It took me a bit to get the controls at the beginning because I kept getting killed my the rising lava -- maybe if it didn't start rising until I got the first crystal, it'd give the player a chance to scope out the controls and such.
As you mentioned, shame you didn't get a chance to make sound. But I look forward to see what you make next!
Sacrifice This Game by xlambein 2018-12-15T02:16:48Z
This is an interesting game but like ... it seemed really hard? At least at the end, I couldn't figure out what toi sacrifice. I kinda want to look up a tutorial haha.
I think sound effects/music were missing, silent games always feel a little lacking to me (of course, I'd imagine they'd get sacrificed too). Maybe try using sfxr to generate some simple ones?
Oh, another little usability tweak, it's a bit awkward having the player the same size as the rest of the tiles because then they have to perfectly line up to fit in some spaces. Usually nicer to make them a little smaller to give them some leeway to move around and fit in things.
Overall, nice little game! It felt really simple with the graphics but I actually had a lot of fun playing around with it :)
upgrades at a price by Nicso 2018-12-14T15:58:42Z
Nice game!
People have left a few thoughts and so I'll just add a small amount of random feedback: - I wish I could move faster - In some ways the game world felt a little 'empty' (which is totally understandable given it's a jam game haha). - Those jumps where you have to jump a small height were super hard haha
Mr. Bees Wild Adventure: Buzz Off by WiredOverload 2019-05-13T04:58:57Z
I couldn't tell if there was a way to win aside from just moving to the right and avoiding wasps. Did this title screen have more things on it than were actually in the game?
I agree with the bees are a bit fast. One recommendation if you have time next jam is to get people to play it before you finish and see if they have any feedback they can give you, then you'd be able to sort out little UI things like that.
But still, nice job! I liked the music :)
Fowl Goods by Ziamor 2019-05-18T19:31:11Z
As a heads up, little tweaks like the ones you listed are not allowed for the jam! You can definitely make them, you're meant to leave a version without the little tweaks so people can play and rate those ones!
Fowl Goods by Ziamor 2019-05-18T20:15:03Z
@ziamor Yep, those were the ones that come to mind! Ideally trying to fix up those playability things is part of the jam too.
But yeah the rules aren't super strict anyway :P But for those it might be better having a separate page and linking both -- that's what I usually do.
Fowl Goods by Ziamor 2019-05-18T20:19:00Z
Also I left another comment here but it seems like it got lost due to the whole getting logged out thing.
I went and played this version, and it's simple but surprisingly fun! I was somewhat expecting some variant as each of the days went past, but I still enjoyed going through it :)
Also the graphics are really great! I love being that chicken.
Would be nice to have some way to skip text so when playing again you can try rush it to see an alternate ending
The Poor Rebellion by Adam Clayden 2019-05-15T16:50:32Z
I think sound effects are fun haha.
I think the game is pretty hard to understand jumping into it. It wasn't clear why sometimes the A/D buttons didn't do anything, and I didn't feel I had enough time to understand what taxing did.
Might be good to get someone to play it during the game jam to get a feel for those types of usability things
Space Escape by Somogy 2019-05-16T07:16:34Z
Nice job with the graphics/music as others have said. But yeah, I could hardly make it very far in any of the situations! I think maybe the game would work well if it started off easier and then became harder
But! Neat game! I found some parts a little hard to play, but the boss fight was cool. Not sure how I would avoid the fireball attack though??
:sob: :sob: it's... perfect...
Incredible! Nice job making this in the jam!!
Spirit Seekers by DoubleBlackStudios 2019-05-10T02:23:56Z
Nice looking visuals and the way the sound effects changed with the laser getting closer was cool!
I think the game was a little hurt by the physics... they were a little broken at times. Often I'd be stuck in a pit with those squiggly things and unable to jump. I think the way you get stuck to the wall was a little frustrating.
Not bad on the most part though!
Spider Arena by qazwsxedc121 2019-05-16T07:04:26Z
I love the little spider graphic :)
I think the game could use a little more balance though, there was soooo many worms, wow. Maybe getting some play testers during the compo could help?
Token Life by PixelMeal 2019-05-17T02:00:01Z
Wow, this game is really fun. Clever design, and I loved the secret box visuals
I think one thing that felt lacking was the absence of SFX, I would've liked some nice clacky sounds as tiles landed on the board.
Good job!
Life Is Not Currency by gamebuilder 2019-05-18T20:35:35Z
I really liked this game! Simple but pretty fun. I liked the increasing difficulty :)
I also noticed some performance issues later on -- I was thinking it was due to some memory leak issues but I took a glance through the source code and didn't find anything super suspicious. My next guess would be there are a lot of `Math.sin()` and `Math.random()` operations done every frame -- those two functions can be a little slow. There are also a few places where it's calculated multiple times, where you can instead just make it calculated once, e.g.
``` ctx.fillStyle = `rgb( ${ Math.abs(Math.sin((daylight)/300) * 190) }, ${ Math.abs(Math.sin((daylight)/300) * 210) }, ${ Math.abs(Math.sin((daylight)/300) * 255) } )`; ``` could be

``` let daylight = Math.abs(Math.sin((daylight)/300); ctx.fillStyle = `rgb( ${ daylight * 190) }, ${ daylight * 210) }, ${ daylight * 255) } )`; ```
Maybe also using a faster random library could help.
The sound didn't work for me on Chrome, likely because you need to get user input first before you trigger audio (auto-playing audio is blocked)
Blood Mage: Human Sacrifice by tdg_ 2019-05-10T02:01:12Z
Good interpretation of the theme, and nice job getting this done during the compo!
I think the main thing I would change is maybe making the game snappier to jump into. The UI felt a little hard to interpret, and the controls were a little tricky, maybe more animations/responsiveness around that might help. I think that would help the fun factor :)
Coin Operative by davidsheadgames 2019-05-16T07:39:44Z
Nice, this game is a lot of fun :)
I think the graphics were a little difficult to read, in that it was hard to tell the different coins apart (and not everyone lives in the US and knows US currency!!). But I had fun flipping around, including when the whole game started going crazy.
I think it would've been nice to be able to control how far you jump, OR to be able to jump off walls in a slightly more powerful/glitchy way that lets you get back up to where you started. That sounds fun :P
Robyn Hüd by Michael Feldman 2019-05-16T06:39:19Z
Throwing themselves in front of oncoming traffic for the sake of the homeless slimes... Truly a hero for all generations
Neat game, good job with the difficulty balance. Felt fun to play :)
Chicken master by Pawciu 2019-05-18T21:17:45Z
I think this is my favourite take on the theme from the games I've played -- eggs as health + the way you get more chickens is clever and makes sense, and the dynamic of risking losing for greater wins further on is really nice.
Obviously this could be fleshed out a bit more but I liked it! One minor change would be more places to put towers -- it's kind of fun to get overpowered in games like this haha
Chicken master by Pawciu 2019-05-18T21:31:02Z
Oh another thing not sure if people have mentioned yet, the audio of the sound effects was pretty loud compared to the music, you might want to adjust that a bit!
Space Ninja 2: Back to Edo by Shuzo Iwasaki 2019-05-13T04:36:33Z
Interesting game! I'm trying to think of what I would improve to make this a more 'full' feeling game. I think for this type of thing, more content would be good; that's maybe hard to get in a game jam though. Something procedurally generated maybe?
I guess other than that, more snappy controls I think would feel good. Maybe if the attacks were faster and had knockback or something similar?
Ultimate Financial Championship by Jezzamon 2019-05-10T02:27:20Z
@week-of-the-agents Oh no! What didn't you like about them?
Ultimate Financial Championship by Jezzamon 2019-05-12T04:58:03Z
@week-of-the-agents Ah bummer. I guess while making the game I had the volume down. D:
Ultimate Financial Championship by Jezzamon 2019-05-17T16:03:40Z
@tempii Wow, you made it to scientific notation. That's impressive! And I guess it's so high there's some bugs with that haha. You managed to go so far you broke the game :P
I looked it up, so JavaScript's parseInt function breaks down at numbers that high! I guess I'd have to use something else
And you're right, the way the trading mechanic works is pretty unbalanced at the moment. It's kind of fun, but yeah if I was trying to flesh this game out more I'd have to find a way to balance that, or alternatively make everything else equally overpowered :P
Ultimate Financial Championship by Jezzamon 2019-05-18T19:10:05Z
@pcmaster First, thanks for trying all those browsers! It sounds frustrating so I appreciate the effort to try getting it working.
From what you've said, on your computer the client loaded but it wasn't able to speak to the server. The client controls your character, but the server controls the coin spawning along with other players and highscores, and the game doesn't work without that :grimacing:
The game uses socket.io for networking, and it talks to a seperate server to the server that's hosting the client. It's also not using HTTPS for that connection, just HTTP. I'm thinking that server is being blocked -- My guess would be by a firewall, but it might also be due to a browser-related reason, maybe if you have some extra security things?? (I know Chrome won't allow a HTTP socket connection from a HTTPS page...)
If you feel like trying to debug it, you could open the [firefox dev tools](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools) and see if there are any error messages in the console.
On my computer (mac) the game works on Firefox, Chrome and Safari, so it leads me to think it's probably a networking type thing. So you made the right call in not downloading Chrome because it probably wouldn't be any different for you :)
The beginning of the end by Thomas_Bringer 2019-10-17T02:20:43Z
You did the story telling really well in this! In a way, the only problem is the end was a little anticlimactic for me, but the fact that I was anticipating an interesting ending in the first place shows it was done well up to then :)
Impressive as always!
Mastafoon! by Local Minimum 2019-10-09T08:58:49Z
This game looks and sounds horrible. I like it!
I also enjoyed the moment where you you realize you're stuck and the puzzle is more complicated than you think :P
FYI: There was a glitch where if you pressed a button twice on level transitions I think you could skip some?
Empty Rooms by Pizzasgood 2019-10-20T22:33:23Z
Sweet game! Left me with a nice feeling :)
RacoonVenture by Nerzal 2019-10-13T17:01:50Z
Nice game! I played it to the end but it felt pretty difficult to figure out the control for how to do that.
The main high-level feedback I'd give is during the jam you should get someone to playtest the game so you can see how people play and what issues they run into. There quite a few bugs or usability issues I ran into, and I think you'd be able to notice them and fix them during the jam if you had people playing it.
So these are the things I ran into
- A lot of times the text skipped to quickly for me to read it -- I think because I kept pressing F to advance to the next dialog button, instead of space? When I did that the text seemed to behave weirdly - I wasn't sure what happened with the pink cube and the coconut and block on the beach (I think because the text skipped too fast) - It took me a while to figure out how to climb up from the beach. The rope that you can climb is really hard to notice - I could speak to the mouse before I actually saved them - I got stuck on the ice at the end! (fortunately this was after I beat the game)
racoonventure.gif
On the positive side, I liked the look of all the characters, and the blocky world aesthetic was cool :) And I liked the music too!
RacoonVenture by Nerzal 2019-10-13T17:02:44Z
Oh another high level thought: It looks like this type of game idea requires you doing programming/scripting for each different event in the game, and there's probably not too much reusable logic in that. That's fine, but you might have difficulty making a finished feeling game during a game jam if you have to individual program each element. For games that are more driven by a mechanic, you can program that general mechanic and then build levels out of it without too much extra programming. Something to think about when picking a game idea :)
The Idea Explorer by Sebastian-M 2019-10-15T05:48:54Z
Ah! This is a beautiful game! Really loved the vibe behind this one :)
Small suggestions of what would be nice to tweak: - It'd be nice if there was some motion to the player's movement (maybe bobbing, maybe something with a shader?) - Also would be nice if the UI wasn't Unity's default, but was tweaked to fit the style of the game
But both those things didn't take away from the overall feel of the game. One of my favourite LD games so far! :)
Neon Void by egawag 2019-10-20T22:50:48Z
Oh wow, this is impressive! Really well done!
Switching between controls was a little awkward, probably would have been easier if each number immediately triggered the action, but I made it work.
But yeah nice! I think the only thing this left me feeling is that all these nice visual effects and the whole vibe of it would have been great in a game with more substance behind it. But obviously it's tricky to get that going in a game jam :P
Neon Void by egawag 2019-10-20T22:51:38Z
Also if this was a compo game I would totally be looking at the source code to see how the visual effects were done!
Bobbo the Telekinetic Gobbo by AmbaDev 2019-10-18T05:26:18Z
Interesting game! I think I agree with others that there should be more feedback on how effective your hits were. Also, I saw the time on the title screen and thought the goal was to survive as long as possible.
Not sure how this fit the theme, but I still enjoyed playing it
JUST A GHOST LOOKING FOR ITS BODY by smileyface 2019-10-09T09:11:33Z
Fun concept!
I think I agree with with what other people have said, the controls feel a little clunky and made it a bit awkward. I think I'd tweak the timing in general, the evil spirit ghosts felt a bit too fast whereas it might feel more fair if they were slower, but there was more of them
From a game-design perspective, having one time that you need to beat didn't feel fun to me; losing because you ran out of time and having to restart the whole game wasn't fun. Maybe a timer per level instead?
Congrats on making a fairly finished game in the jam though!
Barterin' Buckaroo by chelC 2019-10-09T06:29:12Z
haha this game is great :) Quality art and solid writing! In a few places the text went outside the screen which was a shame because I wanted to read everything the characters said. Nice job!
Priest of RAGE by TheVideoGamester 2019-10-14T02:10:02Z
Way too much grind imo! I think I would multiply all the coins values by like, 10 I think :)
I got up to level 2, that's as far as I made it. Maybe there would be a better way to tweak the game so it wasn't as repetitive...
The Slime Slayer by Evepto 2019-10-20T23:16:56Z
I think the main improvement I would suggest for this would be some type of unique mechanic to make the game more interesting to play? Maybe another suggestion would be having a larger area to play through and some goal to get through.
Good luck for next Ludum Dare!
flue by Sean S. LeBlanc 2019-10-20T22:36:41Z
So I printed out the zine and bought a pack of cards to play this! I cheated a little bit in that I didn't play with consequences, but this was a nice game! Strategy wise I think it was a little easy, seems like the best option is just to reveal all the cards to give yourself more options, and you can usually work it out from there. But it's still nice going through the process. But yeah I won both the regular game and the game with diamonds on my first try :)
Candy Bravery by Samuel Gendron 2019-10-20T23:08:18Z
Impressive game graphically! But yeah gameplay-wise it seems a little broken how when you lose candy/bravery there's no clear way to get it back. I play it twice but got stuck both times so couldn't progress any further :(
Maybe a suggestion for next time would be to get people to play-test the game during the jam, hopefully you'd be able to spot issues like that and fix them before the jam ended.
Candy Bravery by Samuel Gendron 2019-10-20T23:10:20Z
Oh also I loved the little houses and the way the ghosts and such popped up when you were near them! :)
gaarden by Jezzamon 2019-10-09T06:38:06Z
@sheepolution Yeah, I agree! I didn't manage to add more into the world during the jam, but I think that would've been fun!
@levidsmith sadly no way to hatch the egg... *yet*...
gaarden by Jezzamon 2019-10-27T08:27:37Z
@exilegl Nice! Although looks like you missed a few things! The people in the game do actually interact a bit, but you can only really notice it if you slow down and watch for a while rather than making trees all the time :P
Oh man, this is such a genius game! I had a lot of fun playing it! Well done :smiley:
Healthy Competition by Elemental Zeal Game Studios 2019-10-20T03:25:04Z
This is well done! Nice
I agree with what others say in that clicking for the attack was strange, maybe a quick fix for that would be to change it so you use a button instead of the mouse (then your game would be keyboard only which is nice too!)
Other than that... maybe some SFX would have been nice on the hits?
LD47 — Stuck in a loop
Loop Trap by Knatt 2020-10-25T04:06:22Z
Not a bad game!
I found it a little difficult to move the sword at like the sword was a little awkward to use at the same time as moving around. I played a few times but could only just get up to level 2!
Loop Trap by Knatt 2020-10-25T04:11:47Z
Ok, scratch that, I made it to level 3!
This is an interesting idea although it feels pretty tricky. Maybe if it was easier I'd find it more satisfying haha :P
Cursorial by RedHermit 2020-10-17T17:07:53Z
FYI, you should update the download links on the Ludum Dare page to Include MacOS :)
Cursorial by RedHermit 2020-10-17T17:17:50Z
haha, I love this!
I enjoyed how it subverted expectations around gameplay (not being really about the game itself but about being a medium for a short message). I think if it wasn't done as well as it was, that could've come off badly, but the way it worked so well is a testament to the audio and the writing in the game. Well done!
Loop City by Fupi 2020-10-13T04:40:12Z
I really liked this one! I thought it was simple but I found it super fun haha.
Graphics were great, the writing was fun, this concept is funny, but I think the music wins out as the thing I enjoyed the most.
Overall, the game left me with a big smile on my face :grin:
Loop City by Fupi 2020-10-13T04:42:39Z
Oh, strong Flash Game vibes to this, which I think adds a lot for me too :D
Stuck in a Loop by RameshBlue 2020-10-13T04:13:26Z
I think the next thing this would need to make it feel like a fully fleshed game is some sense of progression, and perhaps some type of core game loop. Currently as a endless game that doesn't change that significantly as you play it, it's feels a bit limited.
Nice job getting the spherical coordinates and such to work. That feels like it'd be tricky!
Stuck in a Loop by RameshBlue 2020-10-13T04:14:49Z
Oh also the explosion visual effects are awesome! Great choice there
Dance! Dance! Dance! Dance! Never-ending! by Egan Henderson 2020-10-14T04:15:56Z
Lol, I was really expecting the ceiling to just keep going down forever haha.
I think I agree that it is weird when the music desyncs. I don't have much experience with rhythm games but perhaps it's be possible to position the arrows based on how far into the song the game is. Something like [AudioSource.time](https://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/AudioSource-time.html)?
This game definitely needs something more if you were trying to make it a more engaging game -- perhaps something that you unlock as you play more?
Loved the stick man! ``` \o o \o/ o/ /| /|\ | |\ / \ / \ / \ / \
Phone Tree of Despair by Jezzamon 2020-10-14T04:02:32Z
@local-minimum Sorry, I threw together that UI pretty quickly. You don't need to enter a number, you just press the call button to start the call. You should hear the call through the computer audio, with the computer mic to talk to the game. If that's not happening... Not sure what the problem is :shrug:
I just tried it in Firefox then, and it seems to work fine for me... :/
Phone Tree of Despair by Jezzamon 2020-10-15T19:56:52Z
@local-minimum It should greet you! That's why something must be wrong. I used a voice-over-IP API to create it, so I suspect if something's up it might be with that library.
Phone Tree of Despair by Jezzamon 2020-10-29T00:43:25Z
@sojestan If you take a look at the description more closely the game now works on web without you needing to make a real phone call! Just open the itch.io page :)
Hamster Tank by elemel 2020-10-21T20:08:45Z
Fun game! I played with my housemate and I won 30-26 >:D
I think the one simple tweak I would make would be to make the players and bullets different colors, to make it more clear which bullets you need to avoid. Oh, and it was a little confusing when the bullets hit the ground, I don't think there was a clear enough visual to distinguish the fact that they weren't dangerous anymore. Maybe if they just disappeared in a small explosion animation instead, it'd be easier to keep track of.
Soulbound by benjamin 2020-10-13T04:17:42Z
Springy's Adventure by TheCrittersCove 2020-10-23T05:00:18Z
Graphics are great as people have mentioned!
I didn't understand what you meant by "move to the next area" though! I collected all the things that I was able to collect but wasn't able to find anything more I could do in the starting area. I see some of the comments here talking about more of a game, so maybe maybe I'll try again...
Springy's Adventure by TheCrittersCove 2020-10-23T05:06:18Z
Ohhh, I see what I missed, I didn't notice the stick bridge before. Ok, I get the game now :) Nice!
I don't know if I was an outlier but I just started collecting everything assuming that was the goal and yeah, didn't even notice the bridge when I was playing through the first two attempts. So, maybe making interactable elements in the game clearer might be a good tweak to make.
Stuck in the Clock by Aaronacus 2020-10-14T03:54:04Z
Nice game! It wasn't very hard but it was nice to play through :)
One thing I would change is make the transitions between levels a little smoother -- it felt a little jarring when things instantly changed. Oh, also I assume you noticed this but the gears always push you in the same direction no matter which way they were spinning.
Nice job with the art style too!
Sleepy Hamster by Karl Erik Saks 2020-10-24T00:57:10Z
Nice game!
I think I agree with what elemel said, having a grid for the player movement would've made the game a lot easier to play. As it is, it was kind of hard to judge where the collisions would start and stop.
Ooft, this is a hard one haha. But very well polished, nice one! That one U bend was probably the hardest...
Stranded by Stormboyyy 2020-10-06T02:47:31Z
You should upload this game to itch.io, then people will be able to play it more easily!
Stranded by Stormboyyy 2020-10-13T04:30:15Z
I think the rock hitbox was a bit too small -- I had to look into the game's source code to figure out where I needed to click! :stuck_out_tongue: But I did get to the end thanks to that!
A simple thing that would've made this a bit easier would be if the interactable elements changed your mouse to a pointer when you hovered over them. Or perhaps even a css hover effect? (I imagine doing something like `.element:hover { transform: scale(1.05); }`)
I would recommend getting some people to playtest the game during the game jam, it'll help you iron out some of the quirks and find which parts you need to make easier or clearer :)
Anyway, nice job with your first Ludum Dare game! Hope you can enter again next time.
Framed Space by LaJazuve 2020-10-21T19:44:01Z
Interesting concept! I managed to get 3 of the collectable items, not sure how many there were altogether!
I think the main thing I would adjust is try to find a way to prevent the player from getting stuck (perhaps you could press R to go back to the last collectable you got?) and making it clear if there's a goal or a victory screen to get to!
Framed Space by LaJazuve 2020-10-21T19:47:39Z
Oh, and adding some simple sound effects would make a difference to the feel of the game I think. You should check out SFXR or one of the variants (here's an online version: https://sfxr.me/), which lets you generate sound effects pretty quickly! I imagine you could spend about 10 minutes to get in some simple jumping and shooting sfx
waveloop by radmars 2020-10-17T16:31:14Z
Really well done!
I think this game could use a little bit of work on the UI, as parts of it were a bit confusing at first, I had to go back and re-read the instructions to understand what was happening. I also wonder if it'd be easier to understand if the tracks weren't overlaid on each other but shown above each other?
But yes, the music was great! I was sort of disappointed that there weren't more stages, I feel like I would've had fun playing with those other track variations :)
SNAKE SNAKE SNAKE by Sheepolution 2020-10-13T04:52:25Z
Nice job with the polish!
Game B felt kind of confusing because snakes would disappear? Not sure if I missed something there.
Kind of want to see an AI try to beat this now...
LD48 — Deeper and deeper
CubeMiner by Coolp 2021-05-09T23:08:34Z
Heads up, you might want to add a separate link to the same itch.io page under mac download, so people know there's a mac version of the game before clicking through
CubeMiner by Coolp 2021-05-09T23:36:16Z
So I definitely agree with what other people said that having some feedback when mining would be good. A quick idea could've been to create some sounds with sfxr (or the [online version, jsfr](https://sfxr.me/)). One when you started mining and one when the block was mined would help people gauge how long it takes to mine the block.
I also felt like the upgrades themselves were a little unbalanced, the speed upgrade was SUPER powerful, but I really wanted the mining to be super fast. Being overpowered in a game like this is fun. Maybe one of the upgrades could have mined multiple blocks at once?
It also feels like something where there's a lot of opportunities to add polish, like particle effects, where and each of those would add a lot to the felt of the game
CubeMiner by Coolp 2021-05-10T03:29:22Z
Ah, yep the time constraint plagues us all :/ Nice job on your first Ludum Dare game though!
Don't have much in the way of suggestions, maybe just that it'd be nice to be able to use keyboard controls for the menu UI as well.
Well done!
SNS.LSS//DRK.NSS by fourbitfriday 2021-05-05T15:19:40Z
Super stylish!
I found tracking how much health I had was a bit too difficult with the way it was presented. I'm not sure if there was a way to get health back, but it would've made it feel like when I took damage that I could still come back from that
Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-05-10T03:33:11Z
Nice! I loved the story to this :) The voice acting was great too!
If you're working on a post-jam version, you could maybe rearrange things so the farm part is closer to the start so that it's easier to find. It's a little hidden away. I also felt the world was really big, you could maybe scale things down a bit.
Oh and FYI, the game ran fine for me on Windows.
Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-05-10T03:36:19Z
Also, these two just silently witnessed the destruction that happened here and stared blankly at me :laughing: destruction.PNG
Is there a way for me to resize it, or play it fullscreen?
MION FOREVER by JoshTheStriker 2021-05-09T23:04:49Z
Interesting idea. I like the animations, particularly the inflating hurt animation! And the dash movement felt really nice
Overall I found this game too difficult -- the clover ball was hard to move, and the enemies are super fast, not fast enough to react to it felt. When one of them comes out of nowhere and hits you it feels a little unfair. I couldn't get past the first stage after a few attempts. Not sure if you got anyone to play test the game while you were making it, but that might've helped you figure out the difficulty balance.
GA GAME ME by Jezzamon 2021-04-30T06:11:49Z
@blinry Yes, there was a problem with the way the scaling was done before on some machines. I changed the way it worked so visually it's the same, but things are less nested, so hopefully it should work now! Let me know if you still run into the issue
GA GAME ME by Jezzamon 2021-05-03T05:07:25Z
@mza Should be fixed now! I just switched my website over to https but made a mistake while doing that!
GA GAME ME by Jezzamon 2021-05-06T15:21:44Z
@rosypenguin Yeah, I debated adding an extra button for that, but I was worried with the other three buttons it'd be easy to get mixed up. But a separate button might have been a good idea. Something to think about for next time!
GA GAME ME by Jezzamon 2021-05-18T21:13:47Z
Thanks everyone for playing the game and special thanks to those who left comments!
@maple Yeah, that bug was I think because I was pushing the chrome renderer to its limits... originally each game was nested in the previous game and scaled down 10x. Then the game would scale up everything by 10, or 100, or 1 000 000, etc. Turns out not that great a way of doing things haha. I tweaked it so that instead each level is scaled independently, which I think fixed that :)
@monkosum & @local-minimum Thanks for the comment about the camera and controls! In my post-compo version I tweaked it a bit so you can actually see where you're going to land. Also there's a death animation rather than you instantly respawning, so you can see what killed you too.
GA GAME ME by Jezzamon 2021-05-18T21:17:07Z
@fractalsunrise Yeah I wasn't sure about integrating WASD along with three other actions, because there's also some button for picking up this. In the end I went a control scheme inspired by PICO-8, but looking into other control schemes is a good idea.
GA GAME ME by Jezzamon 2021-05-18T21:18:44Z
GA GAME ME by Jezzamon 2021-05-18T21:21:29Z
@joe40001 Good news, you didn't miss any secret ending :P
That is a good point about having a more complete feeling ending. I sort of tried to go for that by rushing in a boss at the end, but I agree that it would be nice to get some bonus power or something for defeating it. Maybe a gameboy that gives you all the powers at once! Hopefully next time I'll have a bit more time for something like that
Deeper and Deeper Mining Operations ltd. by saviorium 2021-05-08T21:53:42Z
Kind of fun to play with!
I didn't really understand what was going on when I ran out of fuel, I guess that meant that I wasn't able to steer anymore? Occasionally I seemed to regain that ability to steer, briefly.
I think with more clear UI around the upgrade system, and a way to regain fuel this game would have a really good game loop!
Deep Dreams by Diebanez 2021-05-10T16:00:20Z
Hm, tried to play on Mac and I got this message:
Screen Shot 2021-05-10 at 08.59.57.png
Cave-In by JPshoe 2021-05-10T04:05:08Z
Nice one!
Those hazards seem pretty deadly! I felt like even with the upgrades I was struggling to keep up. Seems like the best strategy was just to have a single miner that you would just let die and replace for free haha. Poor miners...
Some simple SFX would've been nice for the clicking actions. You can throw together some simple sound effects pretty quickly with SFXR (there's an [online version, JSFXR](https://sfxr.me/)), or searching for effects on freesound.
And yeah a quick UI effect that shows which item is selected would be nice.
But yeah, overall a pretty fun game! The mine and upgrade game loop was satisfying :slight_smile: And I successfully obtained the soul gem :P
Cave-In by JPshoe 2021-05-10T04:10:19Z
Now I'm at the end and can afford most of the upgrades, I wonder is there a way to counter those spiders? It feels like even with the best gear for killing the spiders, the miners don't have much of a chance.
very excited to play this :)
self reflection by torcado 2021-05-08T21:30:45Z
I forgot to comment about the game itself after rating it! My thoughts:
Nice one! I very much enjoyed the element of reusing things for multiple purposes. I almost got stumped on a puzzle at the beginning, which made solving it even better, of course!
Drill Out by MrLeao 2021-05-11T05:40:52Z
I got the $100! wahoo I'm rich!!
The length of the game and the overall balance was good.
All the suggestions that come to mind are all game-feel polish related stuff: It'd be nice if being in the drill felt ...better somehow. Like, maybe it could drill faster with the ores could be further apart to balance it. And maybe there's some other action you can do in the drill. I also felt the drilling sound effect was a little jarring, not too bad though.
For the visuals, it could be cool if there was more color variety as you dug down into the different layers.
But yeah overall, a nice clean game!
GUN DESCEND by AkioRed_ 2021-05-10T00:11:25Z
I did the thing a few people did where I looked down at the start and then mysteriously died. But then I figured out what was happening the second time around.
Thinking more about that, the first few seconds of a game are really important, particularly a game jam game where people aren't always going to devote a lot of time to fully play through it. (I see a few of the first commenters might not have got past the very first level). So I wonder how you could fix that. Maybe a simple thing would be if the player is looking too low have a message that says "look up!" and have a similar message if they're looking too high.
A more complicated option might be to have arrows to indicate something is offscreen, like these: Rl3Qm.png
I liked how when you died you resumed at the stage you got up to. I think it'd be good if the UI emphasized that more, and made the whole dying and restarting loop faster and cleaner. Something like "click to restart stage 9"
And then as far as the game feel goes, I also agree with what others suggested of giving the enemies less health. Generally, having lots of weaker enemies is more fun than a few really strong enemies.
GUN DESCEND by AkioRed_ 2021-05-10T00:16:10Z
Oh, and I got up to the level with two of the blue crosses and a whole bunch of the other enemies. Couldn't get further than that, haha
Wacky Gravity: An Unstable Ludum Dare 49 Entry! by Maximus 2021-10-12T04:28:52Z
Oh man. This game was rough haha. But I persisted and got through!! The box that follows you is just *mean*.
Screen Shot 2021-10-11 at 21.24.28.png
Overall, pretty good game! I would try to get some other people to play it during the jam to help you judge how difficult the game is, which would help you balance it better. A lot of people coming through to rate your game might not spend that much time trying to get through a difficult section if they find it too hard.
Something that might be nice to have is some checkpoints too, so that way you still felt a sense of progression as you went through even if you die later.
Wacky Gravity: An Unstable Ludum Dare 49 Entry! by Maximus 2021-10-12T04:35:00Z
Oh, I quite liked the audio by the way! The voices were cool! How did you get the voice of the person saying "Albert Einbox has landed?"
Dogs++ by Jezzamon 2021-10-11T16:28:33Z
Wow! Thanks everyone who has played this game so far!
@zwodahs In an earlier version of the game you actually could jump multiple times in the air by continuing to split off, but it seemed like it was a bit too powerful, so I limited it to just one midair jump. But if you want to play around with it, I uploaded a special version of the game here: [jezzamon.com/dogsplusplus-jump](https://www.jezzamon.com/dogsplusplus-jump/index.html). (I made it start off at the playground level, but you can use "," or "." to switch between levels)
Reactor Overload by Litos 2021-10-12T04:53:44Z
FYI, to run this game on my mac I had to run the command mentioned here: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/372084/macos-catalina-app-is-damaged-and-cant-be-opened-you-should-move-it-to-the-t
Reactor Overload by Litos 2021-10-12T05:33:01Z
Nice game! I first started playing without reading the instructions which didn't go so well :P but then I came back and made it through both levels after a few attempts. I did it twice because I wasn't sure if I missed anything. I did run into a glitch where the game got stuck sometimes, I just closed it and restarted.
Some suggestions:
I think sound effects would really help here. It felt a little bit empty without them. If I was going to suggest one change that would be it. You can create some sound effects pretty quickly using SFXR, there's an online version here: https://sfxr.me/. Usually you can add them in fairly quickly in like half an hour or so, so it can be worthwhile trying to get that in during the jam if you can (That said, I didn't end up having time to add sound effects to my game this time :P )
For me the game screen was really small, so a way to scale that up would be good. Maybe a 2x or 3x pixel scale option? Not necessarily something worth spending time figuring out during the jam, but if you think you're going to do a similar art style next time, you could figure that out now and then you'd know what to do next time.
Anyway, well done! I really like the art! And, looks like this is your first Ludum Dare too? Nice!
gunstable by torcado 2021-10-11T06:30:52Z
Pretty fun! I think I'd love a life system -- maybe you get x amount of attempts for a level, or a running set of lives that you can regain over time.
Only other suggestion was if there was a way to become more overpowered quickly, that'd be fun :P Maybe a bonus mode?
Alpha Decay by dsoberdan 2021-10-12T04:42:29Z
Nice game! I did look around on the itch.io page and on the Ludum Dare page for some instructions -- obviously having more instructions in the game itself is good, but it might be worth adding something on the game page too.
For some reason dragging around the particles was a little bit laggy for me, not sure if it's because I had a slower computer or what.
The UI is nice! I could imagine you could add a bunch of polish to this if you wanted, while sticking to the minimalist theme, little line based animations when something pops off or is added to an atom? And adding more visual flourish to the "Great job" message. Obviously, hard to fit in during the jam :)
LD52 — Harvest
lanterns & mooncakes by ty_ 2023-01-16T17:04:50Z
Cute!
A suggestion to fix the occasionally janky lanterns - it seems like the physics would sometimes act like the player wasn't on the lantern and so start resetting back to the default position. Instead of resetting straight away, if you added a brief delay before they reset, then it would fix some of the issues.
Having the reset happen less quickly, or as others have suggested, having some momentum would also help a bit I think.
But I still had fun despite that! The music was really nice :)
Lightshrooms by LeReveur 2023-01-16T17:18:00Z
Simple but nice :) The mechanic as you created it was done well, but I did feel like I wanted "more" of something. Could be many different things to do that. One idea could be something like [this game](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/an-amazing-game-probably) where the gameplay is pretty simple but the real fun is the developing story between the levels. But there are a lot of other options too, like folks are suggesting in the comments.
A Day in the Life of Death by DDRKirbyISQ 2023-01-15T23:15:43Z
Such a fun game! The story and music worked together really well! Great game as always!
The Archiver by Ale 2023-01-15T23:54:24Z
Hm, I think you should consider disabling mouse controls, they were too frustrating to use. It actually made me assume that the game was designed for a gamepad first, but I see in the description that the gamepad is the less tested one!
I've play a few games where part of the mechanic is "the controls are harder to use" and I don't think it ever really works! I think you need to make the controls feel as good as possible for people to feel like they're fun and not frustrating.
One tip I often give people is to get people to try their game during the jam, if possible! Someone might've given you that feedback which you could tweak.
I got a bit of the way through the game, managed to get a zombie worker and some worker apes, but it felt a bit slow with the controls. Still, interesting entry!
Aquaculture by quadtree 2023-01-16T18:01:10Z
Fun game! I tried creating a logical system in most levels, but sort of ended up making a mess and solving things by just putting everything together and filtering everything.
Apparently I am one of the worst people at this game but I had fun playing it! I think the 3D art style was well suited to this simulation style game.
Grow Golf by torcado 2023-01-16T06:43:44Z
I like the concept!
Something about losing all the ground quite quickly made me feel like the game was too hard too quickly, and losing the balls down the gap felt a little sad, so I think this game didn't jive as well with me compared to your other games. In some ways, getting a lot of balls made me want to be less precise, which then kind of conflicted with the increasing challenge and cost of being imprecise.
I ended up in the state with a small block of land left, which seems like a pretty valid strategy and had a few good turns there.
I wonder if there was some other way to ramp up the challenge aside from disappearing tiles that was less punishing. Or maybe some positive outcome from a ball falling off that could offset the outcome of losing balls.
If there was a bonus mode where the ground didn't disappear I feel like I would have fun playing with that, even if it was unbalanced :)
But super polished, as usual!
The Teeniest Seed by Jezzamon 2023-01-10T02:09:17Z
@ofiro Thank you!
I actually intended to add WASD support in the game but never tested it, turns out I used the wrong name for the buttons haha. I'll have to publish a bug-fix version with that added. I was considering adding space as a button for planting the seed, but removed it so someone wouldn't accidentally plant if they mashed it on the select screen.... but using it for jump is a good idea! I'll add that :)
Glad you liked the music :) And yep, I was going to add those controls in the description, once I actually got around to writing a description!
The Teeniest Seed by Jezzamon 2023-01-21T05:49:22Z
@caranha @flauschzelle Ooh, thanks for the feedback on the camera seeming dizzy! Didn't think of that. I will tweak that in my post-compo version :)
The Teeniest Seed by Jezzamon 2023-01-21T06:02:43Z
@flauschzelle The last level was thrown together pretty quickly, in fact I wasn't even planning on making it beatable at the start, just a "you win" in pixel art letters. Hence why you got a lot of seeds to play with :) That's also why the result when you win is a little anti-climactic.
Note to self: Try to make the ending of the game satisfying for people!
The Teeniest Seed by Jezzamon 2023-01-21T06:30:51Z
@ale Yeah, I ran into the seed planting in the wrong place a few times while testing. Definitely needs tweaking.
Glad you liked it! I content was the thing I skimped on during this game and would've definitely like to add more!
In Harvest We Trust by Adam Martin 2023-01-17T03:53:46Z
Just kidding! This is amazing, well done! Congrats on making this!
Don't really have any suggestions, other than agreeing that subtitles would be nice for the dialog, but totally fair to not get that implemented for a jam.
Back in my day, we used to take our babies off the ground. It didn't matter if they had rolled about in a field or a lake, we used to like them just the same. This current generation is much too entitled.
BHAIbOEN by Local Minimum 2023-05-11T19:59:17Z
Main actual feedback: - Love the graphics - I think the controls were a bit too floaty... - It would've been more fun to have no cooldown on babies. Huzzah! Baby barrage!
Had a lot of fun with this :)
Liked this concept. The controls works, but were a little awkward. Would be nice if there was a way to do everything via mouse. Maybe right click always selects the robot, and then you choose which function is active via a minecraft-like hotbar and left click does it.
Very Fast Food by LeReveur 2023-05-11T15:52:10Z
Simple, but not bad for not having too much time!
Some suggestions that are still feasible in a short time frame:
- The colors are not that good at the moment, there's not really something cohesive that ties the picture together color. Everything is just the color an object directly is, without thinking about lighting and stuff. Some tips I found in my art helpful are: - Choosing a color palette and sticking to it. Very small color palettes end with things looking more stylized in a positive way - Use colors that are fully saturated rarely. Usually pushing down the saturation on all the colors improves things - +1 to sound effects helping a lot.
Another random thought: When the parachute opens, it happens pretty suddenly, which is good for gameplay but visually looks a bit off. Would be cool if when the parachute appeared, there was some momentum to the package and it swung underneath the parachute. I could imagine doing that with some basic physics simulation stuff :) ... though in practice that would probably eat up more time than you had.
PAPERCUT by moonsheep 2023-05-19T01:10:02Z
Great music and visual style!!
PAPERCUT by moonsheep 2023-05-19T01:10:23Z
No major feedback from me as far as suggestions go. You did a really good job with this :)
Moon Express by quadtree 2023-05-14T16:45:58Z
I liked this!
I like the dynamic of how you *can* accelerate to maximum speed if you want, but then you lose control which costs you more time, and how that forces you to be moderate if you want to have a chance of succeeding.
Moon Express by quadtree 2023-05-14T16:48:53Z
I think the things stopping this from being a great game are:
- Graphics. Not sure how to improve it but the current graphics don't seem visually that interesting - A story or something that gets the player emotionally connected with the game somehow. 100th coin's [inbox fool](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/53/inbox-fool) was a good example of this with the voice over and the boss fight. - Maybe some way to win rather than just the game ending when time runs out.
《Deliver Rush》 by Tan90 2023-05-18T16:27:30Z
Aw, yeah I ran into the same bug of not being able to deliver packages. I'm on a mac so I couldn't play the bug fixed version. Which is a shame, looks like you put a lot of work into making something good looking here!
I like all the graphics and the cartoony effect! I think actually the 2D and 3D style did work well together :)
I didn't know what I was looking for when I first started, so having something like an arrow pointing to the delivery location would be nice.
Not sure if you got anyone to play-test the game, but that can be very useful for figuring out bugs and improving the experience of playing the game. To get a high score in Ludum Dare you need everyone to have a good time, and so when someone play tests it you see what parts of the game they don't understand.
Goblin Trail by tukisboolukis 2023-05-18T19:54:46Z
Nicely done! I think it would be nice with simplified controls (trying to manage the camera was a little tricky), but overall I really liked it.
I died once when I realized I accidentally overloaded the cart and couldn't bring enough archers, and then the second time I got through it :)
@wouter52 The game is clear when you win! You'll need to make it to the bottom of the building and destroy the foundations (all the tiles on the ground level) to win.
Mission: Programmable by Jezzamon 2023-05-10T15:38:50Z
@justcamh Ah, that must be a browser specific rendering related bug :( With `.png` files, some browsers apply color correction before telling you what the values of the pixels are. I thought if you used `.gif` files, browsers didn't, but I suppose brave does.
Mission: Programmable by Jezzamon 2023-05-18T15:45:44Z
@tempestcognitor Nice, glad that worked for you! I was working on a way to interrupt infinite loops to stop people getting stuck like that, but I didn't get it added in time. My post-compo version has it though!
Mission: Programmable by Jezzamon 2023-05-18T16:29:59Z
@alexrose I think part of the challenge is the experience is very different if you know programming verses if you don't. I didn't get a chance to add extra challenges for people that already know coding, but that would be how I would handle that. Then I could have some bonus points or achievements for doing a level in one try, but also let beginners work their way through if they can't do the loops yet :)
Mission: Programmable by Jezzamon 2023-05-20T02:07:21Z
Mission: Programmable by Jezzamon 2023-05-20T02:10:10Z
@darchankaen because players use the real browser console, I can't add extra things like that into the game. On one hand, it means I can't invent a new language with shortcuts like that, but on the other hand it makes the game a little more honest because the user is typing real JavaScript in the console, the same way they would for any other website
geom dsh by Jezzamon 2023-10-11T03:55:51Z
@wouter52 Ah, was somewhat distracted when uploading my game, so I missed the cover image. Added, thanks!
The reason the score starts at a random number is because I was reusing an existing variable to make the score, and it would take more characters to make that start at 0 :) I potentially could've got rid of the #LDJam hashtag I suppose :P
I started writing the game in JavaScript, as I would write it with if statements and regular functions and such, and then started making it smaller and cutting features. The game used to be on a circle, and whenever you landed more obstacles appeared, but those all took too many characters to fit. As I worked on it, I had a version that was not quite as split up as the commented version is, but it had newlines and indents to make things more readable.
Parsley by Wouter52 2024-04-19T04:13:11Z
I love the vibe of this game :) Feels silly and fun. The way your objectives aren't really needed to clear the game feels good -- a sort of story telling using the game mechanics itself.
Got sooo close to the highscore but @matt-ravenhall still beat me... grrr...
Parsley by Wouter52 2024-04-19T04:14:07Z
I also really like this take on the summoning theme. Nice one!
Cultists Feast by LeReveur 2024-04-19T04:01:05Z
Nice job!
The graphics in this game are pretty cohesive, so nice job with doing that in the short time frame too. Maybe my favorite game visually of yours so far :)
Worst Day in Hell by Local Minimum 2024-04-18T02:14:45Z
Fun! I got to the fishing ending... not sure if that's the only one :)
Good atmosphere in the game!
If I were to suggest one change it would be to add a map to be a little less disorienting.
I really felt I could relate to the story of this game. The flies were so annoying!!!!
Love the main character's little sprite. Nice game!
Summon Rift by Jottap 2024-04-19T19:29:02Z
Seems like you can't update health / damage? I kept trying those but given that they didn't do anything, it was a while before I tried the others. Might be worth updating the description to include some information about that!
Seems like you have the core mechanics needed for a fun game loop, just needs the limited resource in the upgrades.
Ordinary Wizards Doing Ordinary Things by Fupi 2024-04-18T02:24:41Z
Nice!!! Very well polished. Love the user interface animations when you click on buttons and such, and the sounds were great.
Kill the Lich by MarkTheQuark 2024-04-18T20:16:59Z
Congrats on your first Ludum Dare game!
Doesn't look like I can rate the game -- is something disabled on the entry page?
Some other thoughts: - The sign in might turn a few players off so I would update the Ludum Dare description to make the steps you need to take very clear. Maybe you could also just create a test account that everyone could use?
- Lots of areas that could be fleshed out more, but something simple that would help towards the feel would be adding some CSS to do quick things like hover animations and changing the font to something other than the default.
Just Another Tuesday by Gus Goucher 2024-04-19T03:41:54Z
Wow, very well polished game! I gave it about 10 tries but still couldn't beat it though, even on easy mode :cry: But the game did make we want to keep coming back to it!
Maybe I'll come back and try again sometime
Mansion Madness by bad_fetus 2024-04-19T02:31:00Z
Fun!
If I was suggesting a tweak it would be to make the main character run faster! And it would be really fun if there was different animations of the character running around frantically haha
What this game needs is voiced sound effects. BWOOSH PATOOO BOOOOOM
Wizard Battle by Hylazu 2024-04-19T02:56:12Z
Also: Fun, I had a go with the default deck and then tried building my own. Getting some oafs in there and then backing them up with a thief archer combo seemed to work pretty well!
I think numbers were a little hard to see even when zooming in. Maybe if there were slower animations during attacks it would be easier to follow.
Overall I had a lot of fun though. Good job!
Sketch-a-summon by sver 2024-04-18T20:06:42Z
Not bad! For me, the main mechanic of copying pixels didn't really resonate with me. I didn't find it too fun and the larger levels were a little daunting. Might've felt a bit nicer if the map scaling was fixed?
I dug into the source code a little to try to see where the pixel scaling problems in the map came from. Unfortunately didn't make much progress with the compiled code. Looks like you built the game with Phaser?
Generally the problem is that you're scaling the level image before drawing it, so you need to make sure the image you're drawing is an exact multiple of the size of wherever you're drawing it. One quick fix would've been to add blank squares around the images until they're the right size.
I like the graphic style though!
Echos of Players Past by Jezzamon 2024-04-15T15:50:16Z
@rob6566 lol Rob I love your different player names! I need to add a replay function into the game :P
Echos of Players Past by Jezzamon 2024-04-16T15:30:42Z
Gah, @zoranac @rob6566 and @randomhuman I accidentally opted out of all the categories, oops! (probably thanks to sleep deprivation) If you wouldn't mind updating your ratings to rate the other categories, that would be great! (And each category you rate bumps up your game too)
Echos of Players Past by Jezzamon 2024-04-18T19:48:46Z
@local-minimum Guh, I thought I fixed that bug in previous LD games and set up things so I wouldn't run into it here! I save the levels as image files and read pixel values out of them when loading the level. Unfortunately Firefox applies gamma correction and such before I can read those values. It used to be a problem with pngs, so I switched to gif files. Now it does that for those too. I guess I'll have to figure out how to solve that.
Would love to make the quality of improvement tweaks you suggested! Actually there's a lot of that that I didn't get time to do.
And you're not the only person to discover sneaking between the buttons and the spikes. One fun thing about this is that I can watch replays of how people play the game and I laughed a lot when I saw someone do that :P But good job discovering it!
Echos of Players Past by Jezzamon 2024-04-18T20:19:24Z
@foursay It's not faked, all the players are actual players who have played the game! I spent like 10 hours getting the whole server and database set up to save people's movements :sweat_smile:
In fact, if you reload the game, you'll see your player there too!
Echos of Players Past by Jezzamon 2024-04-18T20:23:53Z
@yorsh For the web server I used Google Cloud's Cloud Functions (like AWS Lambda... I just tend to use Google's cloud infra). The code for that is in in the GitHub entry too: https://github.com/Jezzamonn/Echos-of-Players-Past/blob/main/cloudfunction/function.js
That's connecting to a SQL database also running in Google Cloud: https://github.com/Jezzamonn/Echos-of-Players-Past/blob/main/database/init.sql
Honestly it took so long getting those pieces set up together and configuring the permissions I'm not sure I would really recommend it haha. But now that I've done it once I might be able to do it again, much quicker for another Ludum Dare!
King of the Hill by john-wuller 2024-10-17T04:05:27Z
I found this game a little too hard. I feel like the sweet spot for Ludum Dare games are games that are fairly easy to get through but where you get a good sense of progression. With the food getting further and further away it felt like my defeat was somewhat inevitable...
That said, managed to keep those wasps away for a while!
Oblob by HermesEs 2024-10-17T04:28:38Z
For some real feedback, the graphics and visuals were really nice, which just made the game feel fun in itself. The music added to that a lot too. As far as the gameplay, it felt like the obstacles were moving too slowly to be an challenge, which sort of took away from the game-ness of it. I think for an endless game like this for Ludum Dare, maybe it should be challenging enough that you survive for like 1 or 2 minutes per run?
I Have Put The Creature Into My Gun by Jezzamon 2024-10-07T00:31:14Z
@tuism - Ah, looks like you got in before I could update the description about WASD controls -- any suggestions for what button would be good to handle shooting? I'm thinking maybe right shift?
I Have Put The Creature Into My Gun by Jezzamon 2024-10-07T15:40:29Z
@tuism @local-minimum Ah, I tried to think of things people would get caught up on but didn't think about WASD controls! Given two people have mentioned it, I've added some options as a post-compo tweak (a porting type fix?). Good idea about using (I)JKL!
I Have Put The Creature Into My Gun by Jezzamon 2024-10-07T15:42:51Z
@local-minimum I don't think you can get stuck in the game at the moment. Maybe I'll post a walk through! There are definitely some places where you intentionally have one less guy.
And thanks for uploading a gif of the rendering problems! That's so annoying. \*shakes fist at firefox\*
I Have Put The Creature Into My Gun by Jezzamon 2024-10-07T23:10:40Z
@seth-l The game does have better controls, but sadly it only tells you about the arrow key + zx ones. If you scroll up you'll see the WASD controls in the description!
I Have Put The Creature Into My Gun by Jezzamon 2024-10-13T00:12:41Z
@yorsh Ooh, could you elaborate more on "Platforming controls are pretty basic and could be improved"? I did spend a little bit tweaking the feel of the game so would be interested in knowing what I can improve for next time :)
I Have Put The Creature Into My Gun by Jezzamon 2024-10-15T15:34:53Z
@j3m: Aw, sounds like you missed half the game then! There's a whole new type of creature behind that door!
I Have Put The Creature Into My Gun by Jezzamon 2024-10-15T15:41:05Z
@yorsh Got it! Yeah I think my natural tendency is to prefer floaty platforming haha. My other thoughts:
- No short hops this time, that's true. I've done that in the past, but here I kept it simple -- one advantage of that is that you can get the full jump height without holding the button down, which is helpful for beginners in the platforming parts. I try to make games that are accessible for Ludum Dares but maybe there's a way to balance the two... I shall think about that. - Interestingly, I actually did implement coyote time in this game! I kept it relatively light though, just so it helps you rather than totally lets you jump in midair. - No input buffering -- I did actually some basic input buffering initially, but didn't have time to implement something that I would be happy with with the double jumping, as when you're near the ground often you want it to not double jump and instead buffer the jump for when you land. Which is a little more complicated than just delaying the input.
The one thing that's new to me is the idea of falling faster than you rise. I've seen some games that do that but it always bugged me because that's not how physics works lol. But perhaps I'll look into it more! I found an old GDC talk about it.
Anyways, thanks for that detailed response!!
I Have Put The Creature Into My Gun by Jezzamon 2024-10-17T06:12:07Z
@monado Nice! You probably found everything, but in case you didn't I just added a walkthrough which shows the secret place you can make it to at the end :)
Free Donutia by the8donut 2012-04-27T12:19:00
mmn, the ending is a little annoying. I didn't intend to have it loop back to the title screen. I'll upload the version I made with a proper ending, which was 15 minutes late.
The Good Ship Higgs Boson by Jezzamon 2012-06-12T07:49:00
Tinysoft by wurstknifte 2012-05-01T08:23:00
Interesting, although clearly next time you have to focus on TIME.
When the game ended, the sound kinda glitched out for me (ie beeping about a minute after I closed the game), FYI
And yeah the movement seemed quite clunky.
TINY LIZARD SWELL WORLD by racarate 2012-05-08T04:53:00
Hey, I'd recommend renaming the download file to something other than Love... just so I can remember which game is which.
The game looks kinda cool, but I can't figure out what to do. Also, the main character is WAY too small, and not nearly contrasting enough from the rest of the ground to be able to see at all, really, so unfortunately that made this game unplayable really.
AquaWars by ElzingaT 2012-05-09T07:28:00
A shame I can't play it on my mac. :C
Alien Archaeologist by jplur 2012-04-25T01:30:00
I liked playing this game, but it was also a little slow gameplay wise.
Still, it kept me playing through all 20 levels.
Feedback: It's a little annoying how you move very slowly if you're touching a wall. I would have preferred just to not be able to move into walls in the first place.
Also, the things that shoot back at you seemed to take too many hits to kill. Maybe if there was some sound effect or graphic to show that you were doing damage I wouldn't mind.
Spaceship In The Sky With Colors by fysx 2012-04-27T08:00:00
Maybe try and focus less on the graphics next time? (Although they are the one part of the game that's done pretty well).
Flea Circus by robbiehunt 2012-05-09T07:48:00
Interesting... once I did a corkscrew or something I think, but I had no-idea how or how to do it again. Still pretty good, great music, and mood. :D
One critism: The background and bug don't contrast nearly enough, so unfortunately this game doesn't do that well for graphics. :C
Supercell by Nick Cash 2012-05-01T08:17:00
Interesting... although a little repetitive after awhile.
The music was ok, but it didn't really seem to fit the mood of the game.
Microbe jump by jmaasing 2012-04-27T11:36:00
Interesting game, although quite hard. Maybe bring all the drops closer, or make them larger, so it's easier to get up. The graphics were kinda cool, although very lacklustre. Adding a bit of colour and stuff would be good. Also powerups would be fun. :D
Anyways as far as a 48 hour game, it's pretty good, but you needed to focus more on the gameplay and making it more fun.
Woot I have a mac!
wow I rarely get mac-only games. Still, work on getting a windows version. You're allowed to after the 48 hour period
The game was ok, but it was pretty obvious it wasn't finished.
Having the game close whenever you die is a little annoying... If don't want to spend much time on a losing condition, at least have the game reset, rather than close again. (Still, it didn't bother me too much).
It's a shame this game is so short! I would've like to play it more.
The graphics, audio, humor and mood were all really good in this game, although somewhere lost a bit on the fun category. I found it a little frustrating waiting for the animations of freaking out and melting while I was playing, and with the last level especially it was a little annoying having to keep going back to the same pill when I didn't get the jumping just right.
Still, fix the hit-boxes, and add a few more levels, and I think you'd have a great game!
Immunity by umwgmc 2012-05-04T11:46:00
Interesting, but the gameplay is kinda weird.
It'd help if there was an explanation of what each thing did, as well as a set of tutorial type levels. It'd also help if there was some explanation of what the enemies were... I had no idea how to beat them, it just seemed like chance.
The graphics were appropriate, and done well, although I didn't think they looked all that nice; I'm not really a fan on bacteria or body fluid as a graphical theme.
Great music though. :D
Yes! This was a great game concept! I loved how your bullets (?) orbited around the planet, and to balance out spamming their orbits decay and end up hitting your own kittens... although I probably ended up killing them more then the asteroids did.
This game needs music and sound effects, and then something else to make it more fun gameplay wise. At the moment it seems a little difficult to hit the asteroids, so maybe if they were bigger, but then there were more of them/they were faster, it would become more fast-paced and arcade like.
Haxe Planets by jfroco 2012-04-29T10:15:00
Interesting. The graphics are fairly good, except for the main character. The music is also pretty good, especially for a 48 hour time period. The thing that bugs me about this game is that the character seems to jump too high, and isn't very controllable. It's kind annoying when there a situation where you HAVE to die and can't do anything about it, and then you have to restart the entire level. :C
So yeah the only thing I would suggest is making the character jump higher when you hold down jump, and less when you just tap it.
EDIT Oh I see that you've made another version. Yes the double jumping helps make it more controllable.
If you're worried about it being too easy you could remove the checkpoints, because the main reason I was annoyed was when I died when it didn't seem like my fault.
You can just leave it though. It's still not too bad.
The main problem with the difficulty in the first version is that there's no gradual increase in difficulty, it's hard from the very beginning.
Also, I'm curious to how you developed the game, and how you converted it into an app version. Unfortunately I can't look at the source code because Macs can't decompress .rar's. :C
Tiny World: The Musical: The Game by pdyxs 2012-04-27T12:08:00
I really like the mood for this game. I only wish the controls for this game were more... tangible? It's a bit hard using a mouse to point a little barrier, my only difficulty with the game was based on controls, and I would've like to be able to play it perfectly to see what happened in the song.
Also this game NEEDS something to tell you that you use the mouse to change your paddle thingy.
TINY WORlDS by machinas 2012-05-03T08:47:00
Interesting, although pretty hard for me...
I still liked it though, although I wish I had more time to look at the letters and maybe even decide which planets I should try and use to either stop from exploding or make disappear. I found the game too fast, I just tried to make whatever word I could as fast as a could.
Maybe a slower difficulty curve would be better?
Although, for a competition game that most people are only going to play for a few minutes, this difficulty is pretty good because the games go fast.
ANT SURF HERO: THE SURFENING by Jigxor 2012-04-27T07:48:00
I loved this game! It was really fun! I'm amazed at how you did so much so quickly (I followed your development on the IRC). The music is great, the story is funny, the graphics are amazing...
Altogether a really good game!
My only regret is leaving behind my ant friend. :C
Tiny Domination by Daz 2012-04-25T08:40:00
I had the most fun playing this game, out of any games I've played so far.
However the music wasn't very good, and I've played a game before with almost exactly the same mechanics.
Audio Land by triplefox 2012-04-25T09:51:00
This game was very difficult I found, ie I found it quite difficult making something that sounded nice. Using walls and stacked notes was quite confusing for me.
I'm not saying it was so hard I wasn't able to make anything, it just took me a while to figure things out.
Maybe you could add a few examples, or a tutorial showing techniques for creating rhythms? A save/load feature would be good too.
I also noticed that some instruments got drowned out by the other instruments, so a way to change the volume would be a good addition.
The instruments in the game didn't sound very nice. They were very different, and didn't blend very well.
Besides that this looked like it had a lot of potential. I imagine there are a lot of cool things people could make, although I wasn't able to make much.
Drop of Life by Shadow 2012-04-25T08:07:00
I really liked the graphics of this game. This is probably the best implementation of Conway's Game of Life in a game that I've seen, and I've seen one before.
I had fun playing it, although it was a shame there was no definite end, or attainable goal. I managed to survive 75 round really easily (with peak of 116)
Tiny Planet by CherryNukaCola 2012-04-27T12:33:00
This game is really pretty with the explosions, but... I wish I could see what was happening. Most of the challenge of this game is trying to look past the explosions to see the planet. Which is a little silly... it's almost like it's covering up the lack of much gameplay.
That being said, I really do like the explosions and stuff although it'd be good if they were behind the planet or something?
Breathe by mcc 2012-05-08T05:59:00
Interesting... although I like games which have a more definitive goal and challenges, etc.
Still quite nice graphically.
Tiny World Cardgame by SusanTheCat 2012-04-29T02:27:00
Wow, this is one of the ludum dare games that I might play several times outside of judging it!
It's actually quite fun! You should add the extra features you mentioned... I think it'd be fun! My suggestion is an option to be able to set how many points you need to get to win. Of course other characters and mechanics would be kinda fun too, but whatever.
The music made a pretty sweet mood, although the flute wasn't quite perfect, which was a little annoying.
Still, this is a pretty great game!
Flyght by yosh 2012-05-12T10:09:00
Wow... I really like the music.
Fun little thing to maybe do if you felt like updating the game would be to make it so the bullets were timed with the music a little... the sound effect for shooting sounded like a bass drum, so it kinda felt musical.
I don't know how that would work with the fire-rate increasing thing though.
How did you make the music? I love it! (feel free not to reply if it's in your journals 'cause I'll check those out now)
A Robot's Journey by CNIAngel 2012-04-29T00:52:00
Alas, the webstart version doesn't work. As a reminder, you're allowed to fix and remove bugs after the 48 hours, so you might want to get onto that!
Based on your comments, specifically "I had to spend an entire day on learning a new engine and that was my downfall", I have to say that 48 hours isn't nearly enough time to learn a new engine AND make a game using it. It's a mistake a few people use, so try and use something you are already familiar with next time.
Look forward to perhaps being able to play some of your future games!
Tinyville Confidential by Rose 2012-04-29T00:48:00
Interesting concept! Quite different to any other games I've seen. The graphics are great, although perhaps you should've focused more on the game before you worked on that?
This game is kinda lacking something though, maybe it's the win condition, or something besides that, but it needs something more to make it seem like a full game.
Don't Mess with the Gnomes! by ziomorti 2012-04-27T07:43:00
This game was really too hard. The character seemed to move too fast, I think. The deaths also were too unforgiving.
In the future I would try and make it more obvious that you click on the platform in the first level... took me a while to figure it out, when it should be a basic game mechanic.
Still not too bad though.
shiprage by AirRider3 2012-05-08T04:28:00
Cool game, the graphics were very smooth and nice. It's a shame there's no win condition.
I guess the time constraints really came into play here.
Still it's a pretty good game from what I've seen so far.
Some bugs I found was that if you left it for a while, the ships tended to drift towards one edge of the screen, and then kept getting further away, so the game started lagging quite a bit. Maybe add a ship limit, and edges around the screen?
Just a comment on "What I wanted to turn it into had I had enough time": I think with 48 hours there won't ever be much time, the trick is to be able to cut features and do what you can.
Good luck for next Ludum Dare! Hopefully I'll be able to play your entry
Celia by Finn Stokes 2012-05-01T08:44:00
Wow, the graphics in the game are great! 5/5
The music is pretty good too, although it's has a few flaws in the playing of the instrument (Ukelele I'm think), which are a little annoying to listen too. I guess that's ok for a Jam entry, but... if the music guy wasn't working on anything else in the game, maybe they could've worked on the quality a bit more?
The level design was pretty good too, especially for a 72 hour time-period.
You also get 5/5 for the theme too... I'm ranking based on how interesting their interpretation of the theme is, so not like whether it literally fits it or anything, and this whole Alice in Wonderland thing was great!
My two suggestions:
For levels that loop, it's kinda confusing having your character suddenly appear on the other side of the screen. It'd be nicer if the graphics were just tiled, and there was no obvious "jumping" from one side of the level to the other. Of course, you'd also have to include something to make it obvious that levels WERE looped.
Also, it's kinda disorientating having the background move in the opposite direction to the rest of the level whenever the camera moves. It should really move in the same direction as the rest of the level, but slower. That give a cool sense of depth.
This game is pretty good. I'm not a big fan of mouse-controls, but this game still worked pretty well.
I liked how this game fit the theme, instead of just having a small planet or something.
It's kinda weird when this game ends, 'cause it seems like a game that should be endless and get progressively hard. Still it was kinda fitting was a small game.
Anyways um yeah pretty cool game.
Oh dear. Yes it flickers a lot for me. That is a bug that happens on macs specifically, and it only happens when the java program is in a webpage (when it's an applet). It's fairly common, so you should be able to find a solution via a google search. As you said, you won't be able to test it yourself to see if it's fixed or not. If you use a Frame instead (or JFrame), there won't be the same issue.
However, it is possible to run this version on a mac. If you hold SHIFT and COMMAND, then the borders of a window appear around the applet. Clicking on that then brings the app into a separate window (ie a frame), which doesn't have the flickering problem. Sometimes this can throw out the framerate of an applet (making it much faster).
At least, that's my experience from my minimal Java development on my Mac.
When I did the shift and command thing, I was able to play this game fine, so I suggest you add that to the description.
Feedback on the game:
It's pretty fun, although uncovering cells seems too under-powered. Maybe allowed the player to uncover several cells in one turn?
Also there was another cross-platform based error: The buttons and descriptions went partially of the edge of the screen, which made reading the item descriptions hard. I think this would only be on my mac because the buttons were also the standard mac buttons.
Stuff like that sucks, doesn't it!
Turns out I have a program called "Build Applet" which looks like it turns python program into Mac applications, so if you manage to figure out what was going on or anything maybe I could try and turn it into an application for you? I really don't know anything about python, so it might not work, or maybe it's really easy to turn something into an application, but whatever.
Adaption by Tim Bumpus 2012-09-01T03:13:00
Interesting game, reminds me a bit of LD23's keynote...
Some parts are veryy slow though, I'm kinda playing it out of obligation, not for fun... :C Everything in this game should be sped up by about 5 times faster I think. Also, as people pointed out, the ships fire bullets too slow.
I did find all four mode though!
Still, it's a good idea. I think though it should be more obvious what the player has to do to get to each of the different game modes, like, what things to person could possibly do. Generally, just chucking the player into a random situation and making them figure out what to do isn't really that great.
Not too bad, although you definitely need to look up some physics in relation to the character's jumping: You generally want a variable representing their vertical speed, and then you increment that variable by a certain amount while the character is in the air.
Augment to advance by littleball 2012-08-29T07:17:00
Interesting, although the game is kinda clunky, the controls don't work very well, and much of the difficulty seems to come from that. Maybe if the controls were fixed (ie you move in the appropriate way when the arrow keys are held down), and then if the game started off slower, and got faster it would seem better. The main issue I felt was the fact that gravity was so ridiculously fast
Not very evolutiony though
Evu for life by dector 2012-08-27T09:44:00
Pretty fun... I quit when I got a little annoyed at dying at about level 11 though.
This game is kinda lacking in graphics, and music. It needs something extra to make it an additive game, to make it something more than just another platformer game.
The game did use the theme, in a way which influenced the game play, although it wasn't a super-original use.
Still, pretty good! Good luck with future Ludum Dare competitions!
GLORPLAX III by Pacifist Games 2013-01-07T06:14:00
it's funny, having difficult and awkward controls is typically a rookie mistake lots of people make on ludum dare, especially so when people say "They're not bad, that's the challenge of the game". But you managed to actually pull it off! Good job!
I played this game with a friend and we both had fun playing it. :D
Misadventures of Dr. Bardo by PIXEL^3 2012-12-19T04:37:00
Yeah, third level was quite hard, I didn't beat it.
graphics were pretty good, but the actual animation, of the character, wasn't very good, in my opinion. Needed to be more... animated. XD
Still pretty good game.
That noise sweep thingy in the music got annoying after a while. Also, the jump and landing sounds were delayed so that they were out of time with the actual character's actions.
Death by Tree by EdiiKnorand 2013-01-05T01:17:00
Well, I can see why this has pretty much no votes. Are we expected to download the source files, edit them, and the compile them and run them?
Guardian Angel Devil by Serilyn 2013-01-01T23:58:00
Nice twist! I kinda saw it coming, given the theme, and the fact that armour bonuses and etc were permanent. Some of the powers were a little overpowered (ie healing and damaging). Also, the gameplay was fairly slow. Graphics were good, and the generated music came out pretty well. I really liked this game, and the idea. :D
Also the HTML 5 version worked fine.
...oh, I see the stuff about the shield... that explains why all the attacks seemed really weak.
Tourist Trap by HeyChinaski 2012-12-19T04:19:00
Nice game! The sound didn't work on my mac, and pressing 'm' froze the game, so I just won't rate the audio.
I still enjoyed it though. Last level was difficult but fun. :D
Mordor Must Resist! by ArkadyDracul 2013-01-02T00:18:00
FYI, you have to create all game content within the period yourself, so taking images like the volcanos and sky seems kinda cheating.
I can't play this game on my mac, so I won't rate it, but that's my feedback.
Well, I hope you know what to do different next time
A Villain's Demise by monomanio 2012-12-17T07:04:00
I feel as though including music is somewhat cheating, as it would add to the mood and other stuff. Even though we're not meant to rate the game based on it. But you added another version, so I guess that's ok. Maybe you should label the other one so it's obvious it's not the compo entry. It would have been nice if there was some sound, like if the wind kept going or something during the game in the no-sound version.
Still good job w/ graphics and such.
My only complaints are:
It's not hard enough. Games like this should have less health, so that the game goes quickly and you can retry quickly (IMO). I can't really be bothered to play all the way until I die.
A shame it didn't really fit the theme. I mean, your character is a villain, but that's it, it didn't really change the gameplay in any aspect.
Still, very polished looking game!
Crowd Control by Merigrim 2012-12-17T06:14:00
This game is too long, IMO. Should be either shorter (i.e. less people), or more interesting. People need to move onto other games. XD
The graphics were quite average... I think you should aim for a theme, like a restricted palette, or pixel graphics in the future.
The sounds were quite average too. I'm not a big fan of that music generator... it's a bit over used. I don't know if it would be better than nothing though.
And yeah the map is way too large.
Still, good job!
Lil Assassin by RylandAlmanza 2012-12-17T06:03:00
Please provide some version of the game that is actually playable. XD
Lil Assassin by RylandAlmanza 2012-12-17T06:38:00
Thanks for commenting with the link! I really appreciated it!
Note that free-to-use graphics aren't allowed in Ludum Dare - you have to make all the content of the game yourself within the 48 hour period.
Good job forcing people to learn to controls from the start, lots of games don't, and then people get annoyed when they can't figure them out.
The theme use was pretty average. Could have been more creative.
Would've been nice to have audio, but better no audio and good gameplay.
I liked the smooth movement and wall jump mechanic. Level design was also good - I kept trying despite many deaths. Overall an enjoyable and fun game!
The Level by xandy 2012-12-18T03:57:00
Interesting concept, but the lack of sound did make a difference. Also, the gameplay wasn't very interesting... I suggest working on that first, before graphics, next time.
Interesting game, but I found it a bit slow... would've been better if there was some goal instead of the time limit, I think.
Graphics were pretty good, although you should set it so that the game doesn't scale, because the pixel graphics don't scale well.
Neurovirus by tokija 2013-01-05T01:26:00
Is it possible to export the files to an executable using pygame? Surely it is... what do other people do that use pygame.
You should try and figure out how to do that before the next ludum dare, so that you know you'll be able to create a version that people can play.
Anyways this game is very good, good graphics, fun, good level of difficulty for a game you are meant to play several times, good audio... basically: GREAT JOB
Only lacking category is theme really. Because you're not that much of a bad guy. Still you took an original approach which is better than a generic game.
Interesting game, although I'm not sure why it goes for so long... 300s seems way too long. Judging by the screen shots the bullet section is all that's in the game so I don't think I'm missing anything by leaving early.
But yeah I'm kinda just like whaaaat...
Oil Co Exploits by Arakade 2012-12-25T12:20:00
Dr. Vile in The Greater Good by GreenPixelDev 2012-12-18T01:44:00
Great job! My only suggestion would be to use button controls for the cutscenes, instead of having to switch to using the mouse.
Good take on the theme too!
Burglar by Manuel777 2012-12-17T05:59:00
Brace yourself for some hopefully constructive criticism. Sorry for slamming your game if you already know these.
The controls are confusing. Having to hold x and then z to use a weapon is confusing. It's not obvious that you can enter houses, and that z is the button to press to do that. I only skimmed through the control section, but it should have been easier to understand.
Not engaging quick enough. I had to play for quite a while just to understand what was going on, and how to get back up to the top. Most people will only play a game for max 1 minute before moving onto another game if it's not interesting.
No obvious goal. Maybe there is one, but it seems like you would have to play the game for a while to figure it out.
Freezing when you die. This is major enough to be considered a bug, IMO, and you should try and fix it. Forcing people to refresh the page to replay the game would make lots of people leave.
Also that dog is poorly positioned, as you usually die before even realising that it's there, and that you're meant to avoid it.
Other things: Avoid using z as a control because it's not in the same place on every keyboard.
Theme use was average. You want to tackle the theme in a more interesting way, or more successfully use the concept to get a higher rating.
Graphics were good and bad. The mono-coloured thing worked Ok, but personally I think it's a bit ugly. Because of that, it was hard to tell what was people and what wasn't. But you managed to make a lot of graphics, so that's pretty good. I think you should've focused more on the gameplay first.
Overall the game wasn't too bad, but it did seem quite unfinished.
...wow I should learn to shorten my feedback, or else I won't have time to rate any games. XD
Burglar by Manuel777 2012-12-18T05:00:00
Hahah... this was the first game I rated, so I think I was a bit too harsh.
Graphics were quite good actually. A little washed out as people said
And yeah, the game needed a goal, really.
30 seconds in: Already 5 stars for humour
hahaha Opera HQ
Also 5 stars for theme because this is really what the theme category is about: Good interpretations of the theme. :D
Even though the jumping on platforms stuff is fairly simple and not that fun by itself, I still really enjoyed this game, because of the music and humour
The Unseen Strangler by FrozenCow 2013-01-02T00:05:00
The game need some music or some sound I think to be more complete though.
Nova Jump : A Space Adventure by savethejets1 2013-05-01T05:41:00
I think the screen shaking was a bit much... it kinda hurt my eyes. :P I know that that was kinda the intention, but I think maybe you should be a bit nicer to your players...
It was an interesting interpretation of the theme, but I didn't really think this game reflected "minimalism". The removal of the jump button seemed to complicate the game more than simplify it. I also liked the music but it made is seem more game-y rathern than minimalistic.
It was a good game-jam game though! Good job.
Pieces by Husky 2013-05-01T06:08:00
Yay! Fit the theme really well! Great game!
There are a LOT of typos though, but it's forgivable.
How exactly did you make this? I don't understand how you could get the middle and right mouse click working if you used as3
Time Void [Tech Demo] by drGsus 2013-05-15T10:22:00
Good game!
Feedback:
The lives and game over system made me sad because I was concerned about getting far and then dying and having to restart. The game was short enough that that would've been ok, but obviously I didn't know how long the game was.
The 'leap of faith' part of a game, where you don't know what's ahead and you have to just guess is quite overused in general (I'm guilty of using it too), but it kinda took away from this game. This is an easy mistake to make when you design the levels and know them really well, so that they're not leaps of faith for you.
I wasn't a massive fan of the 'music', but as it's literally what "minimalist music" sounds like, it was ok. I'm just not a fan of minimalistic music. :P
The ticking sound though was a little distracting, because it kinda made it seem like there was some timer, and that time was about to run out.
Anyways, good game! Fit the theme well!
Duds by nexantic.com 2013-05-01T05:53:00
Nice game, although it doesn't seem like the actual game mechanics were related to minimalism, just the graphics.
Extermitrons by inko 2013-05-17T11:31:00
I like this!
It wasn't THAT minimalistic, but was at least kinda minimalistic.
The sound effects that played when you selected a player, (made in sfxr I'm guessing) unfortunately clashed with each other... would've been cool if they harmonised.
I couldn't complete any of the goals, but I still had fun. I liked the way the enemies' bodies piled up, and blocked more enemies chasing you.
, by OnionBlaze 2013-04-29T07:10:00
Nice game! I like the theme, and I thought the game was just long enough. I probably would've stopped after one more level :P
I felt it was a little difficult to move around, it'd probably be easier if the paths were larger than the player. Also if you only had to move the mouse to look around that probably would've worked better but you need mouse binding for that.
I kept thinking I had to leave the level and be sneaky but then often there was an easier way :)
Also I liked the end it was very rewarding.
My only criticism is that when you're playing you can't tell how much longer it'll take to find the other balloon, and there's not really any sense that you've progressed, so I was unsure whether I should give up or not... Still I persisted and managed to find it!
Save Your Mother! by viinnyk 2013-12-17T23:10:00
Hmmm maybe switch to dropbox for the file download? I don't like downloading things from ad-filled pages.
Also there wasn't really a clear way to leave places once I entered them which kinda made the game unbeatable. I tried twice.
Movement and stuff was fairly glitchy.
Also I think if you're going with a drawn kinda style, you may as well use higher resolution graphics, as the pixelly scribbly graphics didn't really look that great. :/
Still, it looked interesting.
Agent LD28 by Steve | tacospice 2014-01-06T22:22:00
Hahaha, this game was pretty amusing!
The only thing I would've wanted is for the text to display faster, because I wanted to read it but it took so long...
The Voyage by hoqjed 2014-01-07T01:50:00
Interesting game, I couldn't manage to beat it though :C
The Wizard's Quest by zebi24 2014-01-07T00:32:00
This game was pretty good, but the enemies were a little overpowered, I found. I got annoyed when I died about 6 times, especially when the respawn page didn't work, but I still played until the end.
Also the sound effects were really loud! Ah!
The graphics were kinda cute I guess. I don't know if the realistic looking explosion really fit with the rest of it though. It would've looked better if the explosion was bigger for the larger enemies.
I liked the way the magic spells came out of the actual point on your staff until I realised it left me with a massive weakness against enemies attacking from below.
Good interpretation of the theme!
FFirst Impression by chiguireitor 2014-01-07T00:12:00
Your player likes winning and losing as much as possible
Your player likes figuring out hints
Your player dislikes the sex shop existing but maybe that's just me
Your player doesn't dislike the music even though some do
Your player likes the interpretation of the theme
Unibrow by ViliX64 2014-01-06T21:20:00
Good game!
The music didn't really feel appropriate IMO, and I feel like the theme wasn't all that integrated into the game, but I still had fun and liked it!
Cyber Defence by Random Abductions 2013-12-17T23:20:00
I could only see 4 weapons? And I could use them more than once?
Anyways the game looked pretty good. I think it needed more feedback when you killed an enemy... maybe if there were more enemies that were easier to kill it'd be more fun.
Maybe this is just me and my inexperience with RPGs but I feel like this game would do better with more graphics, and a more understandable user interface.
I also felt the game was a little too hard, but maybe I didn't understand it
Would've done well with some sound effects, even if they were simple.
LD29 — Beneath the Surface
Generic Adventure Game by Jezzamon 2014-05-01T12:51:00
Thanks everyone!
There is a glitch with the sound, I'm a little unsure why it happens, but it happens very rarely.
As for the boss fight, there is a (probably a little too quiet) sound effect that plays when you do damage. You have to do it a few times though! And when you die the boss regains health (wouldn't really be a challenge otherwise :P)
Surf Ace by soulrot 2014-05-01T01:10:00
Revenge (Ludum Dare 29 - Beneath the Surface) by Andrei Müller 2014-05-17T06:16:00
This game could probably do with some more balance, and more content really. And an achieveable goal.
I personally wasn't a big fan of the drawing style too...
If you're planning on continuing this, you should try to design levels and place enemies in certain places rather than having them randomly appear.
Super Plumber Brothers by arrogant.gamer 2014-05-01T01:57:00
Doesn't this break Ludum Dare rules by using art that you don't have rights too? (Yes, even though it is a jam game)
Bubble Dream by denvil 2014-05-17T13:28:00
Wow, I assumed this was a jam entry because of the graphics and the amount of levels! Good job!
Classic autogenerated music.
Good things about this game:
- Graphics
- Quite a few levels. Good job with that!
Things I thought this game lacked:
- Perhaps a more interesting song? (Although obviously that's hard within the time limit)
- An interesting game mechanic. It's pretty much a standard platformer. I think then the lack of polish that is a general result of being a game jam game become more obvious, because there's not really anything this game has over other platformers.
I personally would rather less levels and more mechanic.
Vaults Inc by Bruno Massa 2014-05-05T02:59:00
This is a really nice game!
I quite like the general asthetic, although there were a few things that slightly bugged me:
- The background uses square tiles, but the blocks are hexagonal tiles. It'd be nice if the background also used hexagonal tiles, or triangular tiles if you wanted a flat surface.
- I felt the general colour scheme for the tiles and the font was a little too bright. Maybe if you picked a nicer colour palette, and/or made the colours less saturated?
I played twice, first time I quit once I realised the blocks to the left on the buy screen were so much more expensive. The second time I got up to 140 population.
I was often confused as to why my fame became negative, especially when I did something that seemed like it would increase my fame by a lot.
The game worked really well on my touchscreen PC. The only thing that was slightly awkward was the hover effect on the buy screen doesn't work with a touchscreen. If you made the first tap show the description, and the second tap select the block for placing then it'd be perfect! You should consider porting to mobile!
A few people have mentioned the game "Fallout". Is this game meant to be related to that game, or is the term fallout just referring to a nuclear fallout (I would assume the latter).
This game didn't really have anything that would make it interesting though :/
IlluminateTree by IL_yoshioka 2014-05-14T08:06:00
Kinda interesting, but I thought the lack of a decent game mechanic let this down. Maybe if the controls/graphics were implemented a little better, this would be a cool interactive thingy - but I still feel it's far off from being a game.
I found the character pretty amusing compared to the rest of the game
Submersion by superzac 2014-04-28T03:31:00
I spent the first 10 minutes just spinning around crazily!
At first I was like "eugh" but once I got the hang of it, it was pretty fun! I managed to collect 5 treasures, and then got lost. :{
LD29 by smbe19 2014-05-01T01:34:00
As people have said, I was a little confused by which color was a wall or not. I think if the goal and start squares were darker, it would've been more obvious that you could walk on dark squares.
Good job on the random level generation though, because it near the end it seemed to always generate level where I could almost get the end, and then I got stuck.
I think if you player could move faster the game would be a little nicer.
The controls worked pretty well on my touchscreen PC!
Introspectrum by solkar 2014-05-17T10:07:00
The controls were too frustrating on my Android. It'd be nice they were explained somewhere. I assumed to tap where you wanted to move, but moving one square is very annoying. Maybe if you just tapped in the top right to move diagonally upwards it'd work better.
I couldn't get very far in it because of the dodgy control and bugginess. :/
LD30 — Connected Worlds
Ordinary Weekdays of Tech Support of Parallel Worlds by SaintHeiser 2014-08-31T06:52:00
Omigosh, I haven't even started yet, but I really like the title music!
*plays game*
This is great!
The fact that you have to do the same thing 8 times is a little tiresome. It'd be good if there was either less ports or more variety the further you got in the game.
Still, great job! Hope you do well!
Galactic Paperboy by Aaants 2014-08-29T14:04:00
Wow! That's impressive music for 48 hours!
My main complaint is that you don't get a chance to retry levels when you fail, but it goes straight onto the next one. I think it should be that if you die/don't deliver all presents you automatically restart the same level
IMO remove the disclamer though! You don't need it
It would be nice if the game could be resized, as it's a little small on my hdpi screen (perhaps that is just newgrounds though)
Also as far as LD etiquette goes, it's somewhat rude to have your main link to a version of the game with ads. I'm pretty sure I missed them because of adblock, but just so you know
Good job with everything else though!
The Veiled World by panurge 2014-08-31T04:01:00
Omigosh I laughed so hard at the start. Possibly funniest thing I've seen in a Ludum Dare game? (I am a little sleep deprived at the moment though)
The camera is a little shakey, which annoyed me, but I had fun.
Fear - Friendly Extraterrestrial Assembly Robot by Erkberg 2014-09-06T05:48:00
An interesting game, but I don't know if I found it fun. More frustrating, really. :P But I still played through it.
Feedback on your UI: The Hardcore/Regular selection was a bit confusing. Maybe it would be better to have something like
- The Beginning -
Regular - Hardcore
Where clicking on the beginning did nothing but clicking on regular or hardcore started the game.
Just stuff to think about for your next LD!
People Manipulation Sim by NikB 2014-09-11T07:07:00
I found this game fun, but in a different way to most other Ludum Dare games. Good job! Although it does need a bit more before it becomes a 'game', I think.
I would've like a less overdone song, but whatever
Isles in the Sky by Tanner 2014-08-29T13:52:00
But it was definitely lacking sound.
EBDA by capsizedmoose 2014-08-31T04:21:00
Neat idea, with the way you move planets!
I think the could could look nicer if you picked slightly more saturated colours, it seems a little dull with everything so grey.
Legacy of Lamas by CoveBit 2014-09-15T01:21:00
I quite like the walking animation, even they it doesn't look like walking at all. :)
I feel like this game needs a goal, and/or an end point though.
It'd be cool if you got points for beating higher levels, and also for higher worlds. Like 1-5 might have you 25 points, 2-5 might give you 30 points, and 1-7 give you 49 points or something. So you balance between going to higher levels or losing health and starting over. Could be potential for a really fun mechanic
Negative Space by ClutchNachos 2014-09-06T01:30:00
Unfortunately the slow movement controls dampened the fun I had with the game a little bit.
Also, it's very hard to see the black and white doors. Perhaps if the background was the opposite colour to the player things would work better.
Bird Simulator - Worlds Connected by Poo by eastes 2014-08-30T23:49:00
Drift Off by DrMelon 2014-08-27T07:48:00
Interesting idea! I would've like some music, and maybe a bit more of a game. Like, there wasn't really much to do in any of the dreams.
Still good though!
Spacecat Marines by matthias_zarzecki 2014-08-28T10:21:00
I quite liked the graphics. It's a little monotonous though - I closed the window and I can't really be bothered to do it all again :C
The music is interesting, but it doesn't seem that fitting.
I think also the movement seemed a little slow? Maybe if there was a faster acceleration speed but similar max speed it would be nicer.
It also would've been nice if there was a more meaningful connection to the theme.
Still good though! There's something satisfying about blasting those aliens :)
Untitled by Tarian 2014-08-30T23:10:00
Would have been nice if there was a little more game though.
Bolt by pxlcoder 2014-09-02T08:35:00
Nice! Good job with the minimalistic graphics.
I think the lines between electric things and the way they lit up was a bit misleading, as what's more important was whether each box was active or not.
Rest In Peace by kenrickrilee 2014-08-29T13:15:00
Interesting how you can avoid the dangers of one place by escaping to the other.
Poor thieves though... having their bodies being burnt.
Complement Chicky by pythong 2014-08-31T04:11:00
Interesting idea, but I think all the animations are WAY to slow. If doors closed much faster and the camera moved quicker it'd be more interesting. I think it makes the game a little boring when it otherwise could be cool!
I also don't think the violin sound is a particularly nice sound. Perhaps another instrument would be better, or a higher quality recording.
The game works on my mac, but I couldn't figure out how to beat it! And then the monster managed to push me off the screen..
A Dark Maze by BubuIIC 2014-12-29T12:27:00
Woot! I'm the 20th voter, which means your game got just enough votes to get a rating! Lucky! Next time you might want to play and rate others' games so that your people see your game more, and it gets more ratings
I got up to level 14... not sure if there's infinite or not.
Here's some suggestions for how this game could be improved, or what stuff you can work on next time:
- Add some sound effects! Check out the resources page, there's a few good tools there.
- Add some music! For Jam games you can use music made by other people as long as you have the rights to use it. (Although you should opt out of that category if you do)
- Less slidey controls. I think Unity defaults to making controls like that for some reason? But yeah I'd like to be able to press a button and have my character move, and release a button and have my character stop. I think there's a 'gravity' option you can adjust for controls in Unity.
- Some other mechanic! Maze games have been done before, to be honest. And they're mostly just trial and error. I get that you were short on time though. :)
I think next time (hopefully you guys do something next time!) you should try to familiarise yourself with your tools before you start! This might sound kinda harsh but I could probably make something similar myself in a half a day or so (assuming I didn't come across any problems). I imagine you lost a bit of time just figuring out how Unity worked. If you're practised you'd have more time to add more stuff in!
Card Quest by GAFBlizzard 2014-12-26T22:55:00
Nice! I played it a few times to try and beat it, and doing that was pretty fun! I haven't really played any deck-building games, so that was good!
A game of this length is probably the limit of what these rules could be used for though, as a lot is relying on luck, as you said on the page.
I also liked the intro :)
Also the card designs were a little cryptic, would've been nice to have some instructions in game
Vertical Defence by zanenga 2014-12-20T23:10:00
Awesome! First polished game I've played so far, so I really appreciated it!
Nice job with the menu/tutorial system. Love it when I see this done well. The music was also great. And the controls worked really well on my touchscreen pc. A nice touch how the gun can also deflect particles.
Oh, I also found a way to cheat your game. If you quickly move the gun back and forth you can create a barrier of triangles that then block all the other particles. Then, whenever you want to get points just blow one up and they'll all explode!
I originally thought the triangles moved at constant velocity, and the idea was to change their velocity so they flew back to the top and off the screen, which I thought was cool, and a new take on the shmup style game genre. But then I realised that lasing them for long enough just made them explode.
My only criticism is that that the theme didn't really effect the game in a meaningful way - although doing that was more difficult this time.
For some reason I got my best score the first time, 61.
True Dark by ranseur 2014-12-21T02:02:00
Ahhh too hard! I think the game was way too hard to control. Bouncing off things an accidentally killing yourself wasn't really fun to me. I gave the game quite a few tries, but couldn't get past the 3rd screen. Those black circles seemed a little unfair.
I think this game did suffer from a lack of art, I think having some type of meaningful enemy to avoid would've made the game much cooler. Perhaps devoting some more time to graphics would've improved things.
If you can't do much in the way of graphics, here's some tips for making circle and squares look better:
1. Never use grey, especially for your background, always have a little bit of colour.
2. Don't use fully saturated colours. Slightly toned down colours actually look nicer.
3. Try to stick to a colour palette or some colour scheme. There are a few sites that collect nice looking ones if you can't find one yourself, here's one I just found: http://www.colourlovers.com/palettes
4. Avoid small outlines. Either pick fairly large outlines, or leave outlines out entirely. I think it looks nicer.
I Am Technician by Murchurl 2014-12-26T23:29:00
Oops. I think I dropped my screwdriver under the desk, and so I got stuck :D
I managed to get the first computer fixed though. Not sure if there's any reason to what I needed to do, what stuff needed to be connected where, etc. Seemed like I just grabbed something random and connected something and then suddenly it worked. Maybe some way to check what needed fixing would be good.
Maybe there was a little too much going on with this game, especially for a jam game? Ideally it should take me only a few seconds to learn the basic controls of the game and what you're meant to do, and then I can start playing and learn the rest. If it takes 3 minutes to explain the controls then it's probably too much.
Maybe a better idea would be to have an instruction on the screen telling you what to do next. A little like the video had, but as the game goes along, for the first few computers.
For some reason the cursor was kinda off on my computer as well (I often had to select slightly above components to pick them up.
All that being said, good job for trying to think outside the box for the theme! Although I'm not too sure if 'entire game on one screen' really fits this game...
Nowhere by Davision 2014-12-26T23:40:00
The download page is a little annoying...
BUT UPON PLAYING THE GAME I CAN CONFIRM THAT IT IS VERY COOL!! Great use of the theme! Maybe if there was some score that could be fun too. My only issue is that there's not really an easy way to end the game.
Ah. I got stuck on level 6. Didn't figure it out. I saw a coin that was in an inaccessible place and gave up :P
Nice concept, although the laser sound effect should really be much shorter if you wanted to set it off so many times, because when they overlap and become much louder it's a little annoying...
Also the idea that lasers gave you health in that one level was a little too cryptic. I beat it but I didn't even know that happened. A sound effect would have helped, because I still had to mindset of "laser's kill me". I ended up beating it because I was lucky and the lasers never blocked my path
Regarding the game, I think the controllers were a little weird. Seems like they should be reversed! Also yeah, the game was a little too slow. Try experimenting with different speeds until you find something that works right.
Eye Rush by asobi tech 2015-04-23T11:23:00
Nice game! I think music made the most difference to the whole polish of the game here... good choice! (I contacted you about music by others not being allowed for the compo, so we're good there)
I kinda wish the theme impacted on the game a little more, though. The only difference as far as mechanics between a regular shmup is that you have 5 bullets at most, and have to use them a little sparingly so you don't wait for them to come back, which is the same limitation lots of shmups (especially older ones) have. Maybe if having less eyes meant you could see less, that could be cool, or something else.
That being said, it's very fun, and very well polished. Good job!
Daygore Bunko by SonnyBone 2015-05-11T23:18:00
Definitely the best music out of the Ludum Dare games I've played!
I wish the theme had a deeper impact on the game though. It didn't really change the mechanics much from being a regular top-down game with a melee and then range attack.
I wish one of the upgrades was to increase my melee range, as I was bad at hitting those guys before they got me :P
Still the overall vibe and mood definitely earned you a 5 overall!
DAGDROM by Ditto 2015-05-11T23:17:00
Sick one! Obviously the visual polish and atmospheric sounds made a big difference to this game!
I felt like it was missing something though... some extra way to use the mechanic? There's obviously a big focus on polish, which is probably the most important thing for Ludum Dare games, but I would've liked to see something extra.
5/5 overall though! Excellent game.
slappy the frog goes to town by rubna 2015-05-09T01:13:00
Awesome!!
This is a great example to other Ludum Darers of what makes a good jam game!
The art style and the way everything bounced around was super great, so was the way your tongue wiggled about. It's such a cute way to interact with the world! I think the only thing that I would add would be some quiet music in the background.
I loved... being the frog...... and the all the 'b's ... and ... the ending.... Wowo
With Kindness by cdgugler 2015-05-03T03:45:00
Not bad. The enemies appeared faster than I could kill them, so I could see that I wasn't going to survive for long.
I would've liked it if they absorbed the bullets depending on which way you were facing.
The game mechanic did feel a little uninteresting, because if you just think about the mechanics without any of the graphics or the game's context then really it's just the enemies are attacking you with range attacks and you have a close-ranged attack that you have to press the button a lot to use. Perhaps that would've been remedied by the music, sound effects and visual effects (e.g. explosions). OR maybe it would be cool if instead of dying the enemies actually became your friend and fought off the bad guys?
A Windy Climb by sockfolder 2015-04-22T11:00:00
Really feeling the lack of sound here. Sound effects make a big difference, and it's pretty easy to make some decent ones using SFXR.
I got the water power up and then was killed by a fire spitting thing. I didn't really want to have to restart again, so I stopped there. Maybe instead if there was some way to restart from somewhere else rather then the start it'd be better.
The art was pretty rough, but I kinda liked it anyway! And the controls were smooth, good job there.
Hide 'n Squeak by TijmenTio 2015-05-11T14:19:00
This was a very charming game! It was fairly late when I played it and I just had a fairly unnerving incident so it was pretty freaky when I spotted that lizard!
You did really well with the UI, as others have said. I liked how everything fit with one button!
I'm not sure whether the toys 'did damage' to the burglar, or whether you just had to stall for time, but it didn't seem that difficult to win, just hide behind a door with a sneaky trap before moving on to the next room.
The audio fit perfectly, which was great!
Warp Wizard by PizzaPranks 2015-05-09T01:00:00
This game is completely impossible.... you need to somehow teleport and then click on an enemy that you can't see before you teleport before you land on the spikes?
Sadly the level design made this game unplayable. I think next time if you try to get some people to play your game before you upload it, you'll be able to get an idea of how difficult your game is.
Also, whilst I'm OK with reading instructions on the game page, I much prefer it when the instructions are in the game, it makes the game seem much more polished.
The game mechanic itself didn't seem that fun, but this could possibly be remedied with a better art-style, background music, visual effects, and most importantly: good level design!
Hope you can use this to improve for next time!
UNIVERSALIS by Atmospherium 2015-05-11T23:16:00
Well, this is a *game* jam.
I'm all for little fun to play around with things like this, but.... where was the theme? Did you have plans that didn't eventuate this Ludum Dare?
It was a litle fun flying around planets and stealing their mystic orbs. It would've been nice if the orbs stayed the same size when you picked them up. But I don't think this would be entertaining for very long. It needs something else, some other mechanic for it to be interesting.
Star Power by NickMakesGames 2015-05-03T04:31:00
Wow! This was really clever! I played it once, and then died, but I thought I'd try it again anyway, and I managed to beat it the second time!
I think you explained something wrong though. I assumed 'rating' meant the number of stars I gave it, but I think you meant the final value you get after adding the stars with the stats they already have. In that case, the enemies attack with the weapon that does the most damage, not the one that you gave them the best rating on.
Awesome game! I think the main thing that could use improvement is the graphics. It kinda worked in the minimalistic style, but it would be cool if there were better graphics.
keyTD by foolmoron 2015-05-11T15:01:00
I don't know if I did something wrong, but I couldn't kill a single enemy. I'm running the windows standalone build. :C
I won't rate it, but from what I saw the graphics of when you press a key were nice, and typing stuff in the menu was fun too
I dont want to hear it by epaik 2015-05-11T14:52:00
Ok, the only rhythm game I like is Rhythm Heaven, which I like a lot, but there are lots of things I don't like about them. I'm just going to tell you what I think even though probably not a big fan on the genre.
One thing I don't like about Rhythm games is visual cues that ask for an audio-timed response. Typically when you first start playing a song you make quite a few mistakes as you're first trying to both react to the song, coordinate the rhythm and do everything with good timing. Usually then you play the level/song again, this time knowing more of what to expect, and then you do it a few more times until you've memorised where you need to play the notes, and you've developed audio cues because you know when the notes should be in the song.
I think this is bad. It essentially means you have to retry something over and over again, which I guess can be appealing in some situations, but it can also be frustrating or boring. Rhythm games try to get past this a bit by having a song that you like listening to anyway, but I didn't like the song enough for it to compensate for that, unfortunately.
(In contrast, Rhythm Heaven gives you clear audio cues before each thing you have to do, which I think helps more. You can feasibly pass a level on your first try in that)
The game didn't provide any audio response when you played the next correctly, as far as I could tell, it just played that song as is. I think audio responses are a big part of figuring out the timing too. The visual cues were a little hard to figure out to start with seeing as they were moving about, but it would be pretty boring it they were just things moving in a straight line, so you did well avoiding that (particularly as visual cues can just become reminders for what you've memorised if need be).
I also felt that the timing was too strict, but maybe that's just because I wasn't good enough :P
My other critique is how it dealt with the theme and the innovation category. Like, it's a fairly standard rhythm game. Fighting off demons with music is somewhat unconventional, but it didn't really impact the game play at all. It's just kinda like a wrapper over a plain rhythm game, rather than something that deeply changed or influenced the nature of the game.
I did quite like the way visual effects when you hit a demon/note, that was great.
I feel like this is super harsh, sorry about that! I did like the music, but I wish I liked it more! I guess I have higher expectations as it's a rhythm game.
Phage Therapy by uberscientist 2015-05-03T03:27:00
Kinda fun? But this game obviously needed more.
I quite liked how killing a thing made more things bacteriophage come out, and then they killed more things! Trying to get that to happen was pretty fun and entertaining in itself! I want to try to tap into that in another entertainingness for some other game!
Get Gorgon! by vandriver 2015-05-11T13:56:00
This game was fairly fun!
For some reason I thought that closing your eyes meant that you weren't holding your mirror up anymore... so I died when I first encountered the beast!
I've played a few games involving Gorgons that have worked well. I think in this one I would've liked if closing your eyes improved your hearing, so that there was some reason to do that aside from attacking the beast.
I think as the game stands, it's a little too easy? Once you find the Gorgon and know where it is there's not much to do aside from shut your eyes and walk near it. I would've like to have to fearfully walk around in the dark searching for it, but that didn't seem to be helpful in the game.
I don't know if this was just me, but I think it lagged a little which unfortunately took away from it a little. I'll rate as if it didn't.
FINAL BREAKFAST: Your World is Toast by GhostBomb 2015-05-03T03:37:00
Awesome game! I love the idea.
The game window did extend below the taskbar slightly, but if I was able to move it with my mouse that would've solved the problem slightly. I see that you added something to fix that in the post-compo version.
I liked how losing toasters had an effect on your ability to fight off ufos. I got down to two toasters left, but they seemed to be able to stay alive without too much difficulty. Then I fired a jam shot that blew up a whole bunch of ufos at once! Yay! BUT then the game crashed. :C
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2963538/SharedScreenshots/toaster%20crash.png
Sidepoint: I prefer it when people put the compo version first.
The Bunnysher by etherealWhisper 2015-05-03T04:07:00
Interesting...
The game lagged a bit on my computer, and I think that resulted in a lot of carrots floating above the enemies for some reason.
I think the lack of colour for the background let the game down as far as graphics go. You can a fix a lot just by adding in coloured lights, and excluding the layers that already have colour on them.
The overall graphics style isn't really my thing (I prefer happier stuff), but models that you got in were well done.
As far as the gameplay goes, it wasn't very interesting at all. As this is the most important part of a game, you maybe should have focused on this first.
The music was good... I'm assuming that you used royalty-free music from somewhere? It'd be nice if you guys credited that somewhere in your entry.
And finally: Why are these skeletons bleeding??
Hula Fighter by matt beckett 2015-05-03T04:38:00
Haha! Awesome! This is sooooo cool! I love it :D
Seriously I love so many things about this game. I love the music, the crudely animated photos, the fact that the photos are of you... Definitely a highlight of this Ludum Dare!
A Month in Z32 by Ammypendent 2015-04-30T06:23:00
The web link is wrong. It should be labelled "All OS's", or something similar.
Or, seeing as it's a html thing, why not just upload it to dropbox and link to it there? You'd get a lot more players that way.
The game itself was interesting, but I ran out of oxygen despite spending a lot of time in the greenhouse... I'm guess the results are randomly generated, and I got unlucky?
I guess I would've liked it to be more obvious what the results of my actions would be, like if after doing something I could learn what the general result of that action was.
PogoPrincess by tsameti 2015-04-20T03:03:00
Ah! The controls are too slidey. If you increased the x acceleration, it might be a bit easier to play.
The pogo mechanic seemed a little hard to get a hold of too. I managed to get to the top by holding space and down, and then bouncing like crazy until I happened to make it to the top. It probably needs a bit of work before it works, but if it was easier to it could've been fun.
See you next Ludum Dare!
(also I updated my game with an exe if you wanted to give it another go)
TypeFighter by Sheepolution 2015-04-20T10:32:00
This was really fun! I ended up thinking of chains of related things, like fruits, numbers, months, etc, and managed to win out!
This game is really great on the whole! Probably the audio is the area that could use some improvement. Maybe the graphics could be made a little more aesthetically pleasing as well (although I guess stylistically they're not meant to be pretty).
One thing that I disliked at first, but quickly realised was awesome was the fact that when you die your words don't reset. It kinda felt like "damn, I lost the last time, and now I can't even use any of those words! This sucks!", but it forces you to be cleverer in your strategy, and plan ahead.
I wish I could download my wordlist! That would be fun to see :)
Here's my finishing combo: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2963538/screenshots/typefighter.png
Also: Pressing escape to restart wasn't working for me.
In conclusion, why couldn't I think of words like "stylistically" or "aesthetically" during the game!!
the name of the game is grab by fserb 2015-04-20T03:07:00
I think it needs something more to keep my attention, some extra mechanic or goal, or something that shows my progress across games.
Nice job!
Squid Pro Quo by TijmenTio 2015-09-07T22:45:00
This game was a lot more doable with the googles :)
But I'm now currently being hit by the last ship left, sitting on almost no health but not able to die :P
Bombercat by orion_black 2015-08-30T22:04:00
The web link seems a little broken? At least for me, it was a download link instead. You might need to move the file into a public dropbox folder, in which case it should open in the browser window.
Regarding the game:
You really need to include some sounds! Basic sound effects make a big difference. Try using something like sxfr, you can create good little ones without much effort. Otherwise the game felt a little empty to me. If you can make any music, that helps a lot too.
Phylactery by NightShadow0 2015-08-31T22:03:00
Windows build? I run chrome so I can't play the web one.
Phylactery by NightShadow0 2015-08-31T22:07:00
Oh jokes it's because I had disabled hardware acceleration. I'll be back to play this soon :)
Phylactery by NightShadow0 2015-09-07T21:57:00
I like the text in this game :)
I had difficulty getting more than two minions to the tomb. But I managed to beat the game once on my fourth or fifth try, once I figured out how to get rid of knights without dying as the lich. I'm a little unsure how to use the barricades properly, seeing as they take a lot longer to build than to destroy. Seems like if I built them I would be wasting my time as the knights would just catch up.
I think the graphics could use a little bit of work. A nicer palette would've made a bit of a difference I think.
This game was fun! I'm glad I stuck through to beat it!
Cute... except for the blood. Poor caveguys :(
a Spirit Awakening by StrayCat 2015-08-30T22:56:00
Fun! I played it through all the way!
Some issues were:
There were a few times where I just had to wait for my spirit meter to go back up, which was pretty boring. I couldn't leave the game idle and do something else either thanks to flixel's auto-pause feature. :(
There were also a few where I just landed on an enemy without being able to see that they were there, which isn't very good as far as level design goes. I guess I'm meant to drop a bear down first?
What parts of the game did you make? The music and graphics were really good, so nice job if you made them!
I felt the theme was a little lacking... was the idea that the last spirit animal was meant to be the reference to the theme? I think games that use the theme the best are ones where the theme impacts the entire game, whereas this game could be for any theme really.
Anyway, good game!
A Heart between Parts by LeafThief 2015-08-31T21:49:00
I wished it was longer though. I guess that's partly because the gif someone posted on twitter about this game they gave away most of the puzzles. Oh well.
Amebiasis by theshadowteam 2015-09-06T23:19:00
I didn't find the game that fun... I think the main mechanic itself isn't really fun in itself. Essentially what you end up doing is waiting every time you land for the pointer to be in the right direction, and then knowing what you want to do to complete the level but having difficulty doing it.
Just reflecting on the games I've played recently, the controls have been designed so that it's easy to do what you want to do, and so the game is made so that figuring out what to do is the challenge.
Perhaps this could be resolved by reducing the speed of the pointer. Or maybe if the pointer slowed down when you pushed down the key/held down the touchscreen, and then you had to release to go. So you get fine controls without having to wait too long for the pointer to be in the right direction.
I don't really like the 'inside a person's body' aesthetic in general, so that detracted from the graphics for me. I don't of lots of fleshy redness looks very nice. Which is unfortunate because the quality of the graphics was good!
Blenderman by NeanderG 2015-09-02T00:12:00
Looks like you couldn't quite finish it. I couldn't really tell what the actual concept behind the game was. Also, I had to go to this page and read the comments to figure out that I could push the red button, because the hit box is fairly off.
Music and graphics are great though!
Moon Witch by Brightstar 2015-09-02T10:02:00
Please label the post-jam game appropriate in the download link by calling it something like "Windows (Post-Jam)
Moon Witch by Brightstar 2015-09-02T10:16:00
"
The game is fairly minimal, but good job with it anyway! I can see this is your first Ludum Dare, so good job. I managed to beat it without too much difficulty. There are a few things that are lacking in the jam version, but I think the most significant is some type of interesting game mechanic. Obviously there are things like graphics and sound that need fixing, but you can miss those and still have a fairly fun game without it.
Other things you could add that make a difference is visual effects and polish. A good example of what effect they make is this game here: http://grapefrukt.com/f/games/juicy-breakout/
I played the post jam version as well, and the graphics and sound effect did make a big difference, even if they were pretty basic. I think the bats' wings were flapping too fast as far as the animation goes.
Hope you do Ludum Dare next time!
In the name of science! by pta2002 2015-08-30T05:53:00
Not a bad game, but not incredibly interesting. There wasn't anything particularly new about this game to distinguish from other similar ones.
The lack of sound did hurt this a lot though. Evening having simple sound effects makes a big difference. Try using something like sxfr (there are some links on the tools page) or searching freesound for some sound effects.
Good job in making a completed game though!
APT - Advanced Persistent Tabby by MagnusFurcifer 2015-08-31T22:02:00
Wall jumping is a little off. I think it would've worked better if you had to press the jump key to jump each time.
It's a shame there wasn't really anything new about this as a platformer though.
Still, good job in making a game that felt relatively complete
I like brain by Artefale 2015-08-30T22:20:00
Some Ludum Dare tips:
- Generally people label their games Windows if that's what computer they work on.
- You forgot to upload the game's source code! Uploading the source is a requirement of the Compo. If you don't want to, you can switch to Jam. It's not too hard, you can just grab everything and chuck it in a .zip file.
- Use something like dropbox instead of MediaFire to upload your game on. I don't want to have to click through all those ads.
- Try to reduce the download size. Surely RPGMaker can compress games a little bit? Otherwise put the game in a .zip file.
I didn't play this game because the download size was too large.
I like brain by Artefale 2015-09-07T22:14:00
I came back to this and saw that you changed the uploads! Nice job, and thank you :)
The graphics seem very impressive... (did you really make them all yourself within the 48 hours? Including the backgrounds?)
It was kinda funny going around and just spamming the eat brains attack. Good times. The 'optmized version' also crashed when I got into the castle.
Pigeon Postal by mewnica 2015-08-30T22:11:00
Cute :)
I think the movement of the bird would be nicer if it was a little slower, I found it hard to control.
Unfortunately you missed the theme on this one. Also, it would be good to have some instructions in the game. Maybe just letting me know that I need to drop packages in coloured doors, and if I leave them behind I can't advance. You probably worth editing the description on this page at least.
I had fun playing this one :)
Lands of TSR Lore by Christina Antoinette Neofotistou 2015-12-21T22:06:00
Looks really good! The animation for moving around does seem a bit weird, but I like the idea of doing 3D style graphics by chucking a whole bunch of 2D stuff together :)
I guess to make a finished game you should have started smaller, or focused on gameplay instead of graphics first?
As for the gameplay itself: When I was playing the game I was frantically getting everyone to attack because I didn't want any of my team to die. Didn't seem like there was any strategy or uniqueness to it though.
trosor by Ditto 2015-12-22T11:19:00
It took me a while but I managed to beat the computers on both courses. The tree/nature course was definitely easier, so probably better to put that one on the left (i.e. first).
The graphics are really impressive, well done!
This game was really missing sound effects though, it would've been a lot nicer with them.
Also, all the views were pretty useless except the ones that faced you forward, because otherwise you couldn't see what the next turn was. I guess if everyone was using the same view so they had the same disadvantage it might work. Still, it was kinda fun figuring how which view was best that would give me the best chance of winning. I found the third-person view was the best.
Raining Stars by orion_black 2015-12-25T02:31:00
I don't think the main mechanic of collecting stars worked very well. Maybe it would be better if you just had to collect 6 or 3 power ups in a row, rather than in pairs, because if you wanted to try to get something of a certain colour you have to make sure both of the 'containers' were empty. I also found it better just to avoid bullets rather than try to collect them.
I also didn't find the slowing down time mechanic all that useful, I could move between the bullets without really using it.
Often games smooth the motion by making pressing a direction accelerate you in that direction, rather than just immediately moving at constant speed (for example, this happens in Mario games), which is actually easier to use rather than choosing between moving at a fast or slow speed, and would make the controls much simpler. Than maybe you could make pressing both buttons do something else
The game looks and sounds nice very good though!
This game was good, I liked it! I quite liked the simple drawing style, and really good use of the 'growing' theme in particular
I played the one labelled as "postcompo" because I'm assuming that's the one where you fixed the bugs? You are allowed to fix bugs and have it still count, so it's still compo in a way.
Sea Cucumber Runner 2D by takemikazuchi545 2015-12-17T11:45:00
Uh.... so it took me a good 10 minutes to get past the first stair case.
After that I couldn't really find it fun anymore. I tried to! I got up to level 3 and then was like "no thanks"
Petal Hill by fishbrain 2015-12-22T21:50:00
Funny little game, the flower's voice was a bit weird....
I guess the graphics could probably use a little work, they seemed a bit too simple
Reap by managore 2015-12-22T02:33:00
I couldn't find the treasure :(
Reap by managore 2015-12-22T06:21:00
Yay! I played it again and I managed to beat it! The first time I was looking for a place that looked exactly like the map, but the map looks slightly different so I missed it. Also the first time I played it I only discovered what the map did once I had already collected all the other parts.
Graphics look so good, the day cycle is an awesome idea. Oh and the maps this generate are really cool, I'm curious as to how you did it :)
Gameplay wise, the game reminds me a lot of Minicraft by Notch a few years ago actually. I like how in this it has a sense of exploring and surviving by yourself (whereas Minicraft was about defeating enemies)
Good job!
Billy's Big Day by Kitty553 2015-12-19T12:19:00
Nice job! The 2 button controls worked well for this game.
I think the timer aspect of the game was a bit unsatisfying... I think there are better losing conditions than the time running out, because when you lose it's like "oh, I guess I lost", and if you are slow at the start then there's not much you can do.
Fortunately when I died I tried again and I managed to beat it :) I had fun playing this game, thanks for making it!
On Tario by LeafThief 2015-12-19T12:52:00
Nice looking game, but yeah, not really that much playing to be had.
Super Soaked by Aumni 2015-12-19T20:50:00
The sound effects were really satisfying in this game, good job with that!
I played this single player, which maybe meant a lost of bit of the potential fun. Still, it's a clever concept, I like it.
Maybe a change I would've made is to make the 'bullets' more readable? Perhaps if each player shot their own colour bullet it might work better, because in the watery environments they didn't stand out much. It still worked, just not as well.
Meowtastic Present Panic by OnionBlaze 2015-12-19T12:16:00
Cute game. I gave 15 presents!
I didn't really understand the value of hunger or how I could be hungry.
I really appreciated the sound effects. Altogether the game felt really smooth. Nice!
The Tie Game by Dejvo 2015-12-19T12:31:00
Cute!
The tie was a little tricky to control, and sometimes the wine seems unavoidable... but it was still fun! It's a shame it's so short, I would've liked some more levels, maybe this tie has a dream to become the president's tie and has to hop from person to person, or something like that. :D
Sickle & Sword by MSiddeek 2015-12-28T03:50:00
This is really quite a fun game! I beat it the first time, and then the second time I played again just to see what happened if I chose almost entirely farmers and chose to build shelters most of the time... turns out you win!
Nice job! Probably the most fun I've had with a Ludum Dare game this time round, which is interesting as I usually like platformers or other games with immediate feedback.
Sickle & Sword by MSiddeek 2015-12-28T03:56:00
Sound effects would have made a big difference in this game, even simple ones made is sfxr
Fading Light by Null DIES 2015-12-20T11:24:00
Aw, I was hoping for a lot more in this game with the size of the team. After I read the description I had high expectations, but it turned out pretty disappointed. I'm assuming you had more ideas but ran out of time
Here's my thoughts, reading through it seems kinda harsh but hopefully it's constructive:
The graphics were kinda boring. Everything seemed kinda dull, especially the trees.
The main character looked off to me. The way he moved and then floated when he was still was weird. Also sometimes his robe would sometimes come through the bottom of the platform. The lighting felt off, he looked weirdly shiny, at first I thought he had tentacles.
The graphics for the buildings, and the background looked nice. I think maybe if you used some interesting lighting, or something to get different colours into it, it would look good. Perhaps the contrast between light and dark could be emphasised visually? There just needed to be something other than dark and greyness.
Gameplay wise it wasn't very fun. I was waiting for the main mechanic to be introduced, and then it ended! I also think limiting the game to going round a single building removed a lot of potential exploration. There's really not much you can do but go around and then go up.
The controls were pretty weird, I've never played a game that used R, F and C before and it confused me trying to remember which was which, and so I died a lot at the start. Also C was never useful? But perhaps if you left the controls on screen it would be easier.
The music was really good though!
I think next time I'd focus on thinking of some simple gameplay, and implementing that first. Games that do well are ones with one core mechanic that's fun in itself, as opposed to games where you cram lots of features in to try to make it more fun.
Fading Light by Null DIES 2015-12-20T11:26:00
I did manage to get through the game by the way! I think maybe the reason why I was disappointed was the intro was done so well, and the screenshots looked really promising! Hope you guys can improve for next time!
Girl Story by MAnimal 2015-12-28T02:38:00
Couldn't beat level 3
The physics is kinda wrong I think. I mean, you can do whatever you want, but typically you don't start falling much faster when you let go of the jump button, but instead of keep the same speed. Do some searching on how to do game physics properly, it'd help a bit.
For both the bee and the other thing the graphics were too small or the hitbox was too big. So I would often die without it looking like I touched the bee at all. You should make the hitboxes smaller, they should actually be a little smaller than the graphics to be a little more lenient.
Good start though. Good luck for next Ludum Dare!
Neo Oxygene by ointment 2015-12-28T00:33:00
I like the music a lot! I got a score of 7112.
I think the main thing this game lacked was a win condition or some type of goal.
Cockatiel Egg by FiSilva 2015-12-27T22:20:00
Cute! The graphics are really nice. The gameplay is pretty simple, but pretty fun too. I could see this game working well with more levels and some other type of obstacle (perhaps a door that opens and closes every second turn?)
Also, while the two button controls worked it probably would have been easier with just arrow keys :P
Nice job!
Pyromaniac 3 -- 2 by _benhumphries 2015-12-17T07:48:00
Best thing about this game:
The graphics were pretty good! Even though you often used simple shapes it still worked well.
Suggestion:
I think the main thing this game is lacking is difficulty. Wasn't really anything stopping me from spamming the mouse in one direction and racing through the level.
Pyromaniac 3 -- 2 by _benhumphries 2015-12-17T07:52:00
Oh, also the music was very very quite. I think you want to make it a little louder next time
Ultra CopyCat Force by xanwan 2015-12-21T00:55:00
The first time through I missed the control explanation. I figured it out after a while but it confused me.
Also this game is definitely at least 3 button controls. I'd go as far as to say 6 button controls :P
I was fun though! The graphics were simple but really good! I managed to get to the end a get an 'S' rank. Yess!
Chomp by Raius 2015-12-26T21:07:00
Awesome! Amazing job for a first entry!
I kinda like how the boss moves around crazily :D
Long Long: A snake lies in the Past by Tapehead 2015-12-26T21:45:00
Nice looking game, but let down by poor difficulty balancing and bad controls.
The obvious fix for difficulty is to place more checkpoints, that would solve a lot of the issues. I'd say at least twice as many. You could probably make it a bit easier by having the game timed with the music too, and having audio cues (i.e. some sound every time the snake moved), although you have to do that well for it to work.
I played it twice, gave up at the first place at the forest part with two switches. Then the second time I played it got past there, only to not be able to jump because my keyboard doesn't seem to be able to detect control and alt being pressed at the same time. Not sure why you picked only those buttons, and chose to disable reconfiguring the controls. I tried to play with my mouse, and I managed to jump then, but it was still too hard, I would often turn instead of jump so I gave up.
Who made the music? Did someone on your team, or did you get it from somewhere else? It's pretty good, probably the best part of the game.
I liked this game and the idea when I first played it, but got a little grumpy after dying too much :P
I think the best way to not make mistakes like this with difficulty is to get other people to play your game during the competition. In fact, I'd say that you really can't make a good Ludum Dare game without getting other people to play it.
Another thing is often I would skip the text because I happened to move as the text came up.
Sonar Vision by AlexHonor 2015-12-27T23:29:00
Not sure why, but it's too laggy for me to play. Which is a shame, it looks so cool
Sonar Vision by AlexHonor 2015-12-27T23:45:00
Oops, sorry my comment was on the wrong game :P For this game:
I'm... really confused, I can't seem do to anything. Hostile ships seem to come straight away and just kill me and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do to avoid that.
Fast West by Emkiusz 2015-12-17T11:49:00
Why did you untick audio and graphics? They were both pretty good!
Zircon by _HopFrog 2015-12-22T21:43:00
Nice concept and game, somewhat let down by difficult controls and glitchiness -- I had to restart twice because the game glitched out :(
Here's what should be changed:
- Do input buffering on the controls a little bit so that it's easier to place bombs in front of you when you're standing still. Often I would accidentally place it behind me due to the order that I pressed the buttons in.
- Make so going around corners is smooth, so that the character doesn't stop, and obviously fix the way that you can glitch off the blocks if you do the wrong thing.
- Make it so that springs automatically recover when you stand on them for a while. Seeing as going back and forth on a spring is a pretty common thing do you it should be easier, having to move slightly off it and then go back is annoying.
I guess some of those things are hard to get right in a limited time frame :P
Graphics were nice! I'd be nice if they lined up with the pixels on the screen properly. Often there was pixel art where because of the scaling some of the pixels were twice the width and others were normal size, which looks pretty ugly. Despite that, still looked good :)
I did manage to beat the game on my third try though... I'm assuming I beat it because I collected everything. A win screen would be nice.
Overall, good game! If there weren't those flaws it would be one of the best!
(Feel free to misquote me as saying "Overall ... there weren't ... flaws ... one of the best!")
Grippy Glove Boxing by Mianki 2015-12-21T00:33:00
Hm... I didn't really have that much fun playing this. Didn't feel like there was much strategy aside from just spamming left and right.
The controls felt a little off too, it felt like the delay was too long, and during the fight it seemed like pressing the buttons didn't do anything with A & D.
Maybe the game would work better if one item appeared at a time, and both players had to race to get it, rather than a continuous stream of items that you just picked up by constantly pressing the buttons.
I love the concept though :D
FRUITWOLF by Claw 2015-12-21T22:35:00
Beautiful game! Really well done. I loved the ending.
No suggestions from me :)
Another Dragon by GeorgeBroussard 2015-12-27T23:59:00
Interestingly I didn't really like this game much at all. Dodging randomly appearing boulders and jumping over monster things didn't really seem very interesting.
And the theme?
Maybe I need to have played Another World to understand this game?
LD37 — One room
One Room by manax 2016-12-27T23:51:00
Promising start to a game. I think the thing I would add (aside from game over stuff) is some additional game mechanic, because walking around somewhat slowly and punching isn't that fun by itself.
Spellbound by ijzm 2016-12-28T00:20:00
Nice game! I think it's my favourite music so far, good job!
I got stuck at the water part, and had to read people's comments to continue... the torches weren't obvious enough for me.
The pixel art is a bit wonky in the Web version due to the scaling, but I downloaded the mac version and played that, which worked fine. Also yeah, often the text didn't fit on the screen.
I felt the ending was a bit anti-climactic though, hitting a wall of text was a bit disappointing. But it's a jam game, so understandable.
Dark room by cushycode 2016-12-27T11:49:00
Simple, but not too shabby.
That is one creepy cat though... as soon as you look away, he teleports? Crazy!
As some people mentioned, the controls could use some work. I think the character should be able to move a bit faster (you could make the room larger to balance this out). It feels too slow. Also,
Finally, the game could really use some sound effects! It's really easy to make some quickly with something like sxfr.
From the looks of things, you might be better focusing more on adding interesting gameplay and less on making different 3D graphics. Particularly as I could barely see most of it in the dark!
Agoraphobic by tylerraz 2016-12-19T06:45:00
This game needs some feedback for when you hit and do damage to an enemy. Also, in general I've found it's more fun to have weaker enemies rather than strong enemies, and instead have the challenge come the enemies attacks or the amount of enemies.
Eternal Prison by AntoineDesbiens 2016-12-19T06:57:00
I couldn't get past level 10. Nice job with the graphics. The moving sound effect was kinda annoying, I'd recommend lowering the volume of it compared to the other sounds.
Sound other tweaks I would make it have the level transition automatic, and faster, I think it would make the game flow more.
Solid game!
1 Room and 48 Hours by meg 2016-12-27T11:36:00
Haha, this is a great game! Love it!
I also liked the fact that you didn't need to do anything about hygiene :P
Floor is Lava by Albert Viader 2016-12-15T11:06:00
The music is great, and I like the graphics too. The controls suck though, the player moves really slowly and I felt like I was struggling with the controls the whole game. I think maybe tweak some of the values
I played on the web on my mac, by the way.
I tried to get on the highscore table but I guess I'm not good enough! It's a nice difficulty balance of being quite hard but also quick, so you can keep trying.
On the whole, I liked it! Nice game!
Floor is Lava by Albert Viader 2016-12-15T11:14:00
Oh, another small UI thing to change: The game is mostly keyboard controls when you play it, but to restart the game you need to click. It would be good if there was a one-button reset option.
Pimp My Room by Stylo21 2016-12-19T08:51:00
Fun game, but fairly standard in terms of mechanics. The graphics were just ok, and the music and sound effects were a little unusual. I still had fun playing it though!
I really like the music! Well done, very polished game.
Home Decorator by Shivur 2016-12-19T07:04:00
Cute game! I quite liked it.
Some audio and visual effects would go a long way to making this game feel a lot better.
Stuffed Office by MFEP 2016-12-19T06:35:00
Next time I'd add in some simple music and sound effects. Not too hard to program in, and you can use royalty free music in the jam.
The game mechanic itself wasn't very unique -- I had to do something similar for a internship application once. It needed something extra to make more interesting, I think.
Nice 3D models!
Sound Crush by Tortoise 2016-12-27T12:03:00
Nice looking and sounding game.
I think the core issue with it for me is that the music didn't have a very meaningful impact on the way the blocks appeared. From my perspective, the main difference I noticed in the game was that when the music was more 'intense', there were more things appearing in the game. But the rhythm of the song or the pitch of the notes didn't really change the way the notes appeared in a way that influenced the gameplay, really. If I could somehow predict the way the blocks would appear based on the music, and I had to change what I was doing based on that, it'd be pretty cool.
The game itself is still cool! I just think that part was a bit 'dissonant' to me.
Space Attack by laylow 2016-12-15T11:30:00
Fun game!
Needs sound though! Try using sfxr or something similar -- even small sound effects would have made a big difference.
I had a weird issue where the left side of the text box was off the screen when I put the game in full screen. But then when I went back to not being in full screen the game fit somehow.
I did find it funny how the ship kept getting fill up with more and more junk. I didn't find it that hard though, I guess my initial strategy and placements kinda just worked.
One Room Adventure by Mattmatt 2016-12-27T11:25:00
Hey, uh. Looks like you broke one of the compo rules! All the graphics need to be entirely made by yourself. From the screenshots, I can see you've used a few sprites from Zelda, and maybe modified them a bit? You might want to switch your game to be in the Jam instead. Have a look at the rules here: http://ludumdare.com/compo/rules/
One Room Dungeon by Trasevol_Dog 2016-12-19T11:04:00
Ah, I couldn't play the game, because I don't have the java development kit. You should be able to package it so I can run it without that, which is allowed post-compo.
Hi! I am unable to play this game because I am on a mac! I think you made a mistakes with your links -- you should include separate mac and linux (and windows) builds so that people can play the game without the unity editor. Preferably have these separate to the source, to reduce people's download sizes.
Shut in Simulator by Uldrendan 2016-12-28T00:36:00
Nice game. Interestingly someone made a game that's very similar about making a Ludum Dare game.
The graphics are pretty good.
