This was not the game I set out to write. The game I set out to write was, in fact, a racing / roguelike mashup instead of a racing / text adventure mashup. But between having unexpected technical difficulties trying to manipulate meshes in Unity and getting called into work on what was supposed to be a vacation day, I had to abandon that game. (I might pick it up again later; I think it was a solid concept.) This was a crushing blow, as it would have been the first time I failed to complete a Ludum Dare game since I started participating in LD36.

But then I had THIS hilarious idea.

I wrote this in the three hours between getting out of the office and the submission deadline. It's not going to win any award for best game (although it might potentially win one for fastest time from conception to completed implementation) but I think the joke is solid enough to score well in the humor category.

I wish I could've pressed up for the last command.

But copy paste did the job as well. Tires blew out on lap 42. Never again.

Ha. I was wondering what kind of stuff I would encounter along the way, then I realized what kind of track the Indy 500 is driven on. Good one.

Well done game. It's very clever.

alphazeba 2018-04-25 00:17

i made it to lap 7 before i wondered what other things you could do in the car. did not make it to lap 8 lol

Cool game! Mine is also a text based and input dependent game. Check it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/platscii

I wrecked 12 vehicles, which made me feel like I won even if I didn't. Sound effects would have added a lot to this, but I made those myself (picture me going 'SQQQUUUEEEEEEEEE-BOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRCCCCCHHHHHH!!!! when I crashed).

Always a fan of text adventures! A good idea for the theme and a nice dose of humour.

> A Spectacular Wreck! > You accelerate into the maneuver, but there's another car there! > You smash into the car, causing you both to spin out and triggering a chain reaction that results in a > dozen wrecked vehicles littering the raceway. > The yellow flag waves urgently, cautioning the other drivers, but it's too late for you. Your mistake > has totaled your car and lost you the race. Am i dead? 10/10

That was pretty amusing! Racing and text adventure are definitely two genres that I would not have thought would mesh well together, but they do. Good job!

Okay, this game made me laugh. Surprisingly complete for a 3 hour entry! Nice work.

niterich 2018-05-12 23:30

3 hours? I can't even imagine making a game in that amount of time! And having to work on your vacation day? That just sucks, dude! Your boss better have a good explanation.

The game itself is pretty monotonous, but I guess that's to be expected given the subject matter. This game reminds me of Desert Bus, or one of those all-white paintings you see go for millions of dollars: A combination of satire, deconstruction of the artform, and a heaping helping of "my four year old could have done that"

In case it wasn't clear, I liked the game.

(SPOILERS)

I am the CHAMPION!!! Screen Shot 2018-05-12 at 21.07.30.png

Please don't question my lap times. Please. Also please don't read this script:

``` f = () => { doCommand('pit'); doCommand('refuel'); doCommand('tires'); doCommand('drive'); doCommand('left') } setInterval(f, 100) ```
I actually had a lot of fun playing this game, even if I didn't play it the way it was intended. Nice one!!
Also the showHelp function is unimplemented which I find somewhat amusing. I struggled with entering the pit when I first played it actually, I think that's because I turned again without realising it. Also this game starts lagging A LOT when you actually make it far, I had to go into the dom and delete some stuff.
robertohigor 2018-05-13 05:53
I lost count of how many times i've turned left. =)
coda-highland 2018-07-29 22:20
@jezzamon Thanks for the feedback. You're not the first person to script their way into a win. ;) My boss did a very similar thing. You're the first one to comment on the DOM getting too big, but that's very useful to know -- that should be easy enough to deal with.
