LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Virus Eater Peter by Nathan 2017-12-05T22:09:24Z

The core concept of the game was unique. I liked the addition of getting modifiers from the DNA. I thought that the game could do with a bit more game feel (screen shake, knockback when enemies are hit, impact sounds) which would give the game a bit more punch.

Crazy Cat Lady by Jacksendary 2017-12-05T23:01:27Z

A nice art style and good integration of the theme into the game. It wasn't immediately obvious how you perform all of the actions.

The Dark Castle by Joror 2017-12-06T20:12:33Z

Absolutely fantastic. I like seeing some more story driven choose your own adventure games/ visual novels in these jams. I loved the concept of the different emotions/moods/actions effecting your journey and the story was compelling from what I have played so far. The visuals were also very nice. I like the replay value that it has through the multiple endings (something I love about games like the nonary series). I need to rate some more games but yes, I will very happily return to this one when I have the time.

Save the Hats by Gruhh 2017-12-05T17:38:35Z

A very nicely polished game that oozed charm. I liked the boomerang style mechanic of tossing the hats. I wasn't entirely sure why my hats were disappearing though and it would have been good if I could skip the intro after having seen it before.

Babies! Babies! Babies! by Local Minimum 2017-12-06T20:01:13Z

I really really loved the aesthetics of this game. From the creepy art style and animation down to the audio. It fits the theme very well and is presented in a way that I haven't seen done from another participant. Mechanically very simple but presentation wise very very nice.

Uncanny Dodge by Dubgron 2017-12-04T15:16:59Z

A simple concept but well executed. I would have liked an icon to briefly show up to the left/right of the clones to tell me which controls it's using (hard to keep track of - but maybe that is the point). An animation for when a piece gets crushed would be nice.

Panic at the Zoo by SojaBird 2017-12-04T20:14:24Z

Fits the theme. I also sort of feel like you worked at a zoo or frequent zoos whilst in the company of young children and that the game is a commentary on your personal experiences.

The Last Stand at Epsilon Tauri B by geeitsomelaldy 2017-12-04T17:50:20Z

I like the way you have tied the theme into the game mechanics, buffing yourself results in a more challenging experience. The music is good. User feedback could use a bit of work (there was no indication, other than health decreasing, that I was being hurt by the pink ships) it would have been nice to have a sound effect and maybe a bit of screen shake. A nice game!

Innocuous Match-3 Emoji Game by TowerHufham 2017-12-05T22:15:01Z

I liked the integration of the theme into the game; the more you play with emojis, the worse your addiction to cocaine gets and you get sent to prison as a result.

Not candy crush by eptwalabha 2017-12-06T20:59:40Z

I really liked the concept of the rules overlapping - it reminded me of the card game Fluxx. If I were to offer some improvements it would be to add a bit more game feel to it. Have the characters slide across into their new position - add a satisfying sliding sound effect. The game could also do with some calming background music.

A time paradox by lythom 2017-12-04T16:32:12Z

Aesthetically I really love this game. The music fits wonderfully with the atmosphere and the ties in well with the graphics. The character's commentary is also very good. A smart concept that I don't think I have come across in a puzzle game before. My biggest issue however; and it's a pretty big one because it stopped me playing the game. The controls are very unresponsive. I press for the man to go up and he takes a good 1.5 seconds to do what I'm saying (which is a big deal in this type of puzzler). That unfortunately makes it all a bit frustrating.

what-doesn't kill you gets stronger by kerneltt 2017-12-04T17:37:25Z

I liked the combat mechanic of having to poke the rats with your spear. I also liked the fact that many of the resources used in the game were multi-purpose (health and currency). I did manage to get forced off of the screen by the rats however. The game could also do with a bit of game feel (rats dying animation, player and enemy knockback). Some bespoke UI assets would also have been nice.

Dodge X by cogcomp 2017-12-04T21:37:04Z

The game has a very nice 90's style aesthetic. I feel like the projectiles fired a bit too quickly for the player to dodge consistently but it could just be me being bad. Nice music also.

Larry Kroft and the Temple of Booze by thomz12 2017-12-05T11:03:30Z

Main menu transitions are great. A great unique character with quirky animations (such as the sweat pouring off of him). Good integration of the theme (linking ammunition to score and speed). Some of the sound effects grate on the ear a bit (the saw for example). I'm also not a huge fan of insta death mechanics (such as touching the saw). It could also do with some sort of checkpoint system.

Asteroids Attack by Kutase 2017-12-06T22:13:28Z

A cool re-imagining of asteroids by combining it with a few tower defence mechanics. I found the controls to be a bit awkward and floaty but it could just be me.

Critters Inc. by stefenism 2017-12-06T18:29:53Z

A really cool concept executed well. I loved the creature design. The creatures did occasionally get caught in corner so that became a bit frustrating (so if you could have like a brief suction mode on your gun for a right click that might be good).

Rhythm Bandit by fashionbatman 2017-12-04T22:25:45Z

Nice soundtrack and a clever idea. The aesthetic overall was good but the tiles changing colours just resulted in my eyes bleeding.

Stacks by torfi 2017-12-05T18:04:15Z

The button felt good to press, I'll give you that.

Timeless Memories by Neowedge 2017-12-04T20:30:23Z

I liked the atmosphere of the game, the music and the minimalistic art style. Unfortunately the game also crashed for me when I picked up the photograph of the party.

Timeless Memories by Neowedge 2017-12-05T14:14:48Z

@neowedge Just saw your messages. You can freeze the game by interacting with the daughter and mother in the first photo (if you keep pressing e to skip dialogue it will keep repeating the dialogue) when you leave that scene it will freeze).

And the crash I was referring to in my earlier post shows this error message(it's quite large) This is on Firefox btw:

Sleepless by NickNarian 2017-12-05T12:53:04Z

Graphically very very nice. Music and sound effects also very good. The gameplay is a bit lacking but fits the theme well. An interesting concept/topic that I haven't seen used.

Coins and Bullets by Genpaku 2017-12-05T11:28:50Z

Good first project. I liked the addition of different difficulties being tied to perspectives. As another has said, the game is lacking in game feel aspects (a bit of knockback when hit by a ball, a bit of screen shake, punchier sound effects).

Keyboard Kitten by qzqxq 2017-12-05T12:43:34Z

A very unique concept that fits well with the theme. I think the level/puzzle design is well thought out. I would have liked some background music and a bit more game feel (some sort of animation when you pick up the keys, maybe a puff of smoke or a bit of platform shake when you land, etc).

Keyboard Kitten by qzqxq 2017-12-05T17:08:36Z

@clue oops! My fault. I could have sworn I couldn't hear any at time time (I only heard jumping sounds) but I just went on it now and there is music so I shall alter my rating.

Procedural City Maze by artmajcher 2017-12-05T14:52:50Z

Nice to see something that's procedurally generated! The movement feels a bit floaty and I would have liked a bit of background music. It could do with improved draw distance as well.

All By Yourself by kothead 2017-12-06T18:42:06Z

I liked the concept of the game. The art style was also unique. I would have liked a bit more level design for the room. It would also have been good to have a fullscreen mode for web browser because pressing space scrolls the window down slightly. As an improvement I would also tint the clone that is next in the queue a different colour so you know that they're next.

Scavenger by LimeniusTeam 2017-12-05T10:44:38Z

A nice little puzzle game with well designed tutorial levels. Good pacing! Calming background music. The use of smell as part of the theme was good and not something I have come across so far. The window was a bit long so I had to scroll down on some of the bigger levels (would have preferred some sort of camera to follow the player). Overall a fun entry!

Freedom For Ball by rasblo 2017-12-04T19:40:22Z

Nice to see a stealth game! The theme is tied into the game well via the prisoners increasing your chances of getting caught. I would have liked some sound effects and a bit of background music and maybe some red sirens to go off when you're caught.

America 2018 by Antti Tiihonen 2017-12-06T12:46:41Z

I liked the overall aesthetic, the character/ world design. The sound effect for the gun was great. I would have liked a sensitivity slider for a first person shooter because it was way too sensitive for me. The path-finding was also a bit dodgy (the enemies could get stuck/lost). It was a good bit of fun, I would have liked at least another enemy type.

Shear Panic by marjie 2017-12-07T09:42:09Z

A cute aesthetic with simple gameplay that gets the theme across well. I was slightly confused as to what the wolf head was used for though and I felt like the staff was a bit to powerful (instead of herding my sheep they would fling off into the abyss).

FUNKONOMIX 2021 by jelch 2017-12-05T20:09:37Z

I really love the design of the character and the art style in general. I also enjoy games that use sound effects made using the developers own body (always amusing). For improvements I would suggest adding more user feedback (I wasn't aware that my tears were actually damaging the toaster, so it would be good if they reacted in some way - e.g. flash slightly, shake a bit, something like that).

Beer O' Clock by krammetje 2017-12-05T22:38:51Z

I really liked the art style. The music bleeding out when you're getting even more drunk was also a very nice touch. I found the collision detection on punching to be a bit clunky at times.

The Luckiest Businessman by mortus 2017-12-05T19:41:54Z

How depressingly amazing! I got locked up and my lawyer told me he would get me out...then I became soo unhappy I could just leave the cell myself to go get pissed. Loved the art style, the music and the interactions. The only improvement I can really suggest right now is improved UI for the results of the interactions. That's the only thing that stands out as bringing you out of the experience. Good game!

Caravan by iovorobiev 2017-12-06T14:13:29Z

A good aesthetic and nice take on the choose your own adventure style genre. I will say however that it was slightly too hard (it was difficult to make it to one new spot on the map without being killed by a worm or something else).

Party Penguin by LiquidBrain 2017-12-05T19:57:04Z

A very nicely polished take on the "balance game" genre that you even built upon by adding multiple directions (which itself added to the theme). Hard mode was also a fantastic addition. The game oozed charm and the music was great. I'd love to give some sort of feedback on what to improve or add but I am stuck for something to pick to be honest. Dancing animations I guess? Even though the spinning penguins is perfectly functional. Good job all!

Avoidance by Triastase 2017-12-06T22:54:17Z

The overall design of the art was great. Simplistic but functional. I liked the tie in with the theme, you get weaker as your score increases - and more enemies spawn. The shooting felt a bit weak and could use some more game feel (great tutorials on the subject on youtube - add knockback, make the projectiles a bit bigger, a bit of muzzle flash, screenshake, etc, should make the combat feel more impactful).

CHRISTMAS PRIME by Greet 2017-12-05T12:33:03Z

Good to see a Christmas theme. Cute graphics. Ties in well with the theme. I can throw toys into the fire without any penalty (even if they aren't broken).

The Exalted by Flubz 2017-12-04T18:37:07Z

I like the integration of the theme into the game - it got pretty hectic near the end! I'm not a fan of the movement controls (I would much prefer to drag the ship to control it rather than selecting the direction by clicking).

eatMoreBurgers(); by Luther 2017-12-05T13:52:05Z

The concept works well with the theme and I like the art direction. I would have liked some background music and a bit more animation/game feel (maybe have the character sprite moving more, have the food pop in rather than just appear, etc).

The More the Not So Much Merriblobs by pinneh 2017-12-04T17:28:41Z

A nice simple concept. The levels seem like they might be randomly generated? It would explain some of the awkward level design that I experienced. That being said, the fact that you have 3 lives enables you to sort of play a bit haphazardly which I'm not a fan of (I would rather it be more puzzle like and force me to do it all in one life). A nice little game though!

LD40 Compo: The Greed Run by vkmicro 2017-12-06T19:51:28Z

I liked the depth of the game. I had a breadth of content that you could spend a good while exploring - trying to find everything. The jumping and movement was a tad floaty but it was still relatively easy to get around. I also liked the knights idle animation, flexing away.

Hungry Dino by nax_89 2017-12-06T15:06:56Z

I liked the idea of integrating the characters size into the puzzle. It also had good level flow (went from basic easy levels getting you used to the mechanics up to some more challenging stuff). The game could have done with being a bit bigger in the browser because it made it hard to see some of the controls and instructions. The platforming is a bit tight at times as well, you can only just make some of the jumps.

Hoarding by tsuk13 2017-12-05T21:33:08Z

A cute art style with a nice theme. The control scheme is a bit clunky as I kept getting stuck trying to go past walls.

Boomstick Leaper by pataya 2017-12-04T16:04:23Z

Wow! The game feels GREAT! Definitely got the game feel down - the shotgun packs a punch. Really like the integration of the theme, more shotgun power = more knockback = more death. Sound design was also very very good. The only improvements I can really suggest would be different enemies? One that when killed pours out a bunch of little baby bugs? Overall fantastic though!

Home Raider by Rongo Matane 2017-12-06T18:54:20Z

I really liked the design of the game. The theme is tied in well by using sound as the part that gets worse (I have yet to see a game using that). I felt like the sound radius could have been made a bit thicker so it's easier to see and it would have been nice if the consumables had some sort of radius description (I used the flash item and just missed the person). Quite fun though.

Diet Time by GerardB 2017-12-05T20:02:58Z

It fits the theme well and absolutely oozes charm. Full of fantastically implemented game feel. My only complaint is that it is mechanically a bit simple.

Necromancer by orcdraco 2017-12-04T18:23:55Z

Nice aesthetic! As others have said, the control scheme is a bit janky, not sure how to fix that because you need to specify which object you're interacting with. I did like how you included two different modes though.

The Floor is Lava by BinarySpark 2017-12-04T22:17:24Z

The game feels great to play. Everything packs a punch and the feeling of momentum increasing as you plummet down is great. It reminds me of Downwell. That being said, the shooting sound did grate on me quite quickly.

Phobos by Yokimbo 2017-12-04T21:45:52Z

I liked this game a lot. The retro style (not just visually but also via the audio). The game feel was great (not too much screen shake). It can get quite hectic when you're gaining all of those lives; which fits the theme well.

Present Panic by Roka Josh 2017-12-05T22:49:26Z

Very nice art style. Subtly hectic at times. Good integration of theme into the game. A slight improvement could be in the game feel department of the UI. Have the title moving slightly, have the UI boxes pop in rather than just appear. It should add a bit more power to the UI.

Zealot by fasterthanlime 2017-12-05T15:54:40Z

A very well polished game. The music was very peaceful and was likely the reason why I didn't rage at the AI. The rules did take a little bit of time to get used to but I eventually schooled the AI! I would prefer to be able to grab/inspect the card by mousing over any part of it (rather than just the top half).

BLOK'D by AndrewJAdams 2017-12-04T22:01:43Z

A nice simple game. A good twist on the traditional match 3 that links well with the theme. The ability to skip a block at a cost was a good move for a bit of strategic depth. Would have been great to have some sound effects/music as well as a bit of game feel (make the blocks pop when a line is made, etc).

Artifact by Tim Eriksen 2017-12-04T16:46:44Z

I really liked the music and general sound design. The art and animations were also very good. The theme fit well not just mechanically but also physically(I had to claw at my keyboard to hoard all of my loot). Trying to move all of the money up platforms was very laborious (which is likely the point because it fits the theme). The collision was a bit awkward at times (on the platforms), it was possible to not be able to jump whilst under a platform despite not visually being under the platform.

Spin Attack by ditzel 2017-12-04T21:30:22Z

Quite a fun game. The level design was great because on some levels it allowed for me to be a bit experimental with the solution (e.g. the coffee level, I decided to try and complete that level by wedging the glass in the gap instead and putting the balls inside). The music was also nice and generally gave the game a very cosy atmosphere. As for improvements, checkpoints maybe? A slightly more tight control scheme (everything feels a bit floaty right now but that could be the desired result). Overall a fun game.

Circus Tyke Balance Hype by quixatocs 2017-12-04T15:38:22Z

Always a big fan of sound assets made using your own mouth. Good job on that front! The art was also charming. Great job on the general game feel. The balancing act gameplay was a bit lacklustre but certainly functional and the increased time for the balancing act fit the theme well. Overall a good job!

SnakeBall by TomDev 2017-12-05T13:32:27Z

A very enjoyable and unique puzzle game. It fits well with the theme. I played this game longer than any other so far! I got stuck on level 9 and had to give up due to other commitments. I would have liked some calming background music to go along with it.

Leader's guidance by ExNihilo 2017-12-07T09:35:19Z

I loved the whole Orwellian aesthetic that was going on. The game tied in well with the theme ( the more rules imposed upon you the harder it gets). As others have mentioned the platforming is a bit harsh for my liking and it could have done with some subtle background music (not even necessarily sound effects as that could potentially add to aesthetic you're going for (people are too scared to even make a sound)).

Paparazzi by Michael Feldman 2017-12-04T19:15:37Z

Nice game feel. Good that you added different scenes for each level. I would have it so that the same prompt cannot show up at the same time (multiple W's resulted in me pressing it once and clearing both). I would also make it impossible for prompts to overlap eachother.

Sticky Plague by Thesoreon 2017-12-04T20:21:53Z

Graphically nice. It would be better with more game feel (knock the enemies back a little when hit, damage sound effects, enemies flash slightly when hit, etc).

Between Stations by Sand-Gardeners 2017-12-06T21:28:03Z

I really liked the atmosphere you created with the game - particularly the TV on/off animation and each advert was also unique and interesting. It was also an interesting decision to include the topic of anxiety/panic attacks into the game. It was nice to see some serious themes explored in the jam. Great to see a more narrative driven experience.

All the Spiders by LillyByte 2017-12-05T18:46:01Z

I really like the aesthetic of the game! The music is also very nice. It's a shame that you didn't get to finish.

Melody : Burden of Sorrow by BumiBomber 2017-12-06T11:00:12Z

The game is quite charming - I especially like the main character, who looks like he's dancing when idle. In general the game flowed very well, the movement and actions the character could perform felt fun but I would say that I found wall climbing a tad difficult because the character pushes away from the wall. The game feel aspects of the game were well implemented, the menus felt alive and the combat felt impactful - there were also secret areas which was cool. My biggest gripe with the game is the control scheme. I generally feel quite out of place using anything that isn't WASD but that could just be me. I feel like it would play very well on a controller. I did get somewhat used to it but there is a very real possibility that I just suck at this type of game (I do). Overall very fun!

Sorrow by Gnappuraz 2017-12-05T21:24:20Z

I really liked that this was more of a story driven experience (not too many of those in LD). I loved the aesthetic, reminded me a lot of LIMBO. I liked how the theme was integrated into the story. It was mechanically a bit simple but I enjoyed myself.

Defence The Castle by SG Alin 2017-12-06T20:19:39Z

I think the premise is fun but the controls are a bit awkward. In these sorts of games I like my characters rotation to be independent of the direction I'm walking in - so I can , for example, fire forwards at the enemy whilst also moving backwards.

Super Treasure Hunt by goudcode 2017-12-05T21:54:57Z

I liked the integration of the theme into the game. I felt however, that the platforming mechanics were a bit too harsh (quite difficult to make some jumps even with a single chest in my hands).

Rich in Space by Fenerax 2017-12-04T19:34:17Z

Really nice game for the time limit. A fun little base building/resource management game. I wasn't aware that I needed to buy the nodules in order to expand my base and my ships decided to not come closer to the base so I couldn't defend them. I would possibly add a way to call my miners back or send out patrol fighter ships.

KissaGame by azuredraco 2017-12-04T21:09:20Z

Loved the sound effects. Wanted to see what happens if you keep breeding hundreds of cats and you actually covered that eventuality. Like the link to the theme. If I were to suggest improvements it would be that the collision on the main character should be essentially the bottom half of their body and the bathroom floor put on the correct layer (the cats disappear underneath at the moment).

Munchy Cell by McFish 2017-12-04T19:55:42Z

Very nice music and a very calming experience. I would have liked it more if, as you got bigger, the camera zoomed out a bit. I would have also preferred full 360 degree movement.

Leggy by aaronw 2017-12-06T22:05:44Z

A nice take on the wonky physics wonky limbs type genre. I think the controls could use a bit of work - I'd prefer to be able to control more than one limb at once. It certainly fits the theme though - the more limbs the worse it gets.

Cairn by Talia 2017-12-04T14:25:12Z

A nice relaxing game with a good take on the theme. The sound effect of the rocks colliding was at times a bit grating. Overall, a well polished version of this type of game.

Neighborhood's Madness by grostonton 2017-12-04T17:12:37Z

I like the concept of the game a lot. I think that the game is a bit easy to win and it could do with a bit more user feedback (e.g. greying out tools when you cannot use them).

Student Simulator by Athoka 2017-12-05T22:21:55Z

Good idea for the theme. Could be improved massively by adding art assets, such as a person who is performing these actions in the background and you can see how these tasks are affecting them.

The Gravedigger by kezhaar 2017-12-04T14:56:01Z

Art, animation and sound were good. Controls were very wonky - would have much preferred WASD and other controls (maybe E) for digging/attacking. Collision on main character is a bit big as well, would prefer for it to be about 10-15% smaller than the sprite so that just brushing against an enemy isn't soo punishing.

@talia Thanks for trying the game out! In order to reply to them you need to click on the chat box and type the exact reply (it is case sensitive)

@faloon Thanks for trying it out! :)

@mormert Haha yeah it is certainly a reflection of my thoughts on social media and the need to constantly keep on top of things. It's hellish!

@grostonton Yeah I wasn't entirely sure whether I had balanced it well enough or not. It can be very hard to tell when you're the only one who has played it in the 48 hours.

I have added a short description of the actions you need to perform in the controls section of this entry.

Jumping is very floaty, it would probably feel better if there was a bit more speed to the decline. Not entirely sure how the game fits the theme. The main character is very charming though and has a nice bounce when they land.

Order Now! by Sibi 2017-12-05T10:53:36Z

A unique spin on the theme that I haven't seen yet. A nice minimalistic art style with quirky characters. If I were to suggest an improvement it would be to create some UI assets rather than using the default ones - also to make the text not blurry (I know Unity is a pain is the ass with that , you have to scale it down and then increase the font size).

Corridor by aa4z 2017-12-05T20:20:28Z

A unique theme link that I haven't seen before, the more money you have the harder it is to see the screen. A fun little game with a bunch of upgrades to unlock. A good number of different enemies. The game could do with some game feel aspects (a bit of knockback on the projectiles gives it a feeling of force, blink the enemy sprite slightly when hit, have UI elements pop in instead of just appear). It would also be more fun with sound effects and some background music which would complement the gameplay and help the combat feel a but more impactful.

Bazooka Arms by DrFallos 2017-12-04T15:08:51Z

Nice simplistic art style. Cool core concept. Your ultimate is a but underwhelming (would have been cool is if wasn't colour specific and destroyed whichever colour blocks it hit). I found the switching between colours to be a bit frustrating, I would have preferred for it to be tied to the mouse wheel or 1,2,3, so I could switch easier/quicker. Cool to see a leaderboard.

25 - The Golden Age by Ambeurk 2017-12-04T18:49:25Z

I liked the minimalism of the game. I'm a fan of visual novels/choose your own adventures so it's good to see one in a jam. I would have preferred for this to be a linear story rather than the same decisions randomly selected though.

Psychoserker by Arya 2017-12-07T09:58:53Z

I liked the general game feel and the art/animations were sufficient enough to make the combat feel impactful. I would have liked for the game to be a bit harder or scale a lot quicker because it was very easy to defeat the enemies at the current spawn rates. I did like the visual effects added when the player consumes the drugs. I wasn't much of a fan of having to hold down right click for my character to face in that direction - it just didn't feel that necessary when you could just use the mouse position as the direction I'm facing in.

Mother Earth's blues by louckousse 2017-12-06T17:31:27Z

Nice commentary on the world and how we use the natural resources of the earth; so a good link with the theme. The music conjured up feelings of melancholy which also fits the theme of the game. I think that the gameplay was very simplistic and I didn't quite get enough feedback from the game about whether my actions were good or bad.

Crystal Seeker by CapitanRetraso 2017-12-04T19:47:07Z

Well I sucked at it. But it was great! I liked the mechanic of having your death create a platform for you. The design of the levels I saw was good because it had multiple paths you could take. Some of the collision detection could use some work (such as when you are right against a wall and try to jump). Other than that, pretty solid.

Sushi Secret by RainbowJam 2017-12-05T23:12:41Z

I liked the blend of sushi and games industry controversy. It got quite hectic in there and the bin got full quickly.

LootBox factory by Brouilles 2017-12-04T20:03:56Z

I like the concept of the game but it didn't appear to update my progress. Some audio would have also been nice.

Your Land by Mighty CheBo 2017-12-05T23:32:58Z

I like that the game had an interesting narrative tied to it. I especially enjoyed that mechanic of the world and interface falling apart around you as you failed to save your lands. I also like how the progress you make moves over to the next playthrough. I did however struggle understanding what exactly was happening and the interactions I could make, so some more improved user feedback could be implemented.

Annoying Dogs by Grahamliphts 2017-12-05T12:20:57Z

I really like the link with the theme - I haven't seen that used yet. The intro text scrolling sound is quite annoying, you could probably get away with using it if it was much quieter.

Greedy Merchants by jlreymendez 2017-12-04T21:00:35Z

Nice arcade style gameplay. Like a multiplayer pac man. The movement was slightly frustrating (when I wanted to turn around a corner it was hard to tell whether I was about to get caught on the wall or pass around the corner.

Squares & Hexes by Tom Robson 2017-12-05T19:33:49Z

It's good to see a game dev student with a bit of passion. I was on a 4 year game dev course in the UK and it was very rare that anybody involved themselves in extra curricular activities such as Dare. The game feels great to play and is visually coherent. The levels are designed well and flow perfectly for the most part (a few required you to press the jump button almost immediately which was slightly frustrating). The use of checkpoints on each half of the levels removes the frustration one might otherwise have experienced. The only improvements I can think of suggesting right now are UI related (a different font - not sure pixel font fits the game, some more game feel for the UI ( pop the deaths stat out slightly when it increments, etc)) Overall a really good entry.

Nested Dungeon by ithasgrass 2017-12-05T11:45:29Z

A pretty fun game tbh. Music is good and pumps you up. Animations and art are functional. There's a decent amount of game feel but it's missing some screen shake to make the projectiles have the most impact. On my first try I was reading the tutorials (so obviously all of my guns self-destructed) and were not replaced with a handgun so I had to restart.

Feed by Genesis 2017-12-05T13:42:21Z

I like the concept of the game and the enemy design. I think the control scheme is very awkward though (I would have preferred that rotation was based on mouse position).

Craskiing by Rewzu 2017-12-04T14:34:40Z

A nice simple game with a fitting art style. The wind sound effect was okay but there was a strange popping sound effect that kept playing now and again. To improve the game I would add a sound effect for when your character crashes as well as the potential ability to jump. I would also improve the end score screen (add a bit of game feel to it!)

Overall a very nice game though.

Stack Thief by AndrewW 2017-12-05T14:04:13Z

I really liked the design of the character and the concept of the game - which tied in well to the theme. I was slightly frustrated by the walls clipping into the camera view (that could have been handled slightly better). I would also have liked some better UI. Overall very fun though.

Doug Bones and the Cursed Lava Lamps by Wibblymat 2017-12-04T15:28:08Z

It sounds like the jumping sound effect was produced by your own mouth? If so, good job! I have a lot of time for self made sound effects. I like the idea of the lava lamps giving you negative effects. As others have mentioned, the collision detection is a bit wonky at times and allows you to miss jumps/fall through platforms. It would have been nice to have some background music as well. Overall could do with a bit more game feel (some screen shake, enemies being pushed back slightly when hit, etc). Good job!

Life Is A Balance by finbobby123 2017-12-05T16:39:12Z

I liked the link with the theme (the more health you have the worse it gets as you become slower). The game could be improved by adding some more graphical assets, a less repeated audio track, some custom UI, maybe a knockback when the player is hit by a disk.

Don't get drunk by tulipekoni 2017-12-06T13:55:43Z

A well polished game with a nice premise that matched the theme. Loved that it challenged my usual preconceptions of this genre (usually you're meant to collect the pickups but in this it serves you to avoid them). The screen going absolutely nuts when drinking too much was also a nice touch even though it did make me as nauseous as the character. I also like that it was procedurally generated.

Water Your Melons by Kciwsolb 2017-12-06T17:24:35Z

A very charming game with an interesting stylistic choice of having the world fall into place as you explore. Subtly calming yet hectic when I notice there is another watermelon...and then another, ect. Only improvements I can think of would be some subtle character animations (maybe bobbing up and down, a bounce when they move) and there's a tiny graphical glitch which results in the player's eyes disappearing briefly. Overall great!

Outnumbered by thebillington 2017-12-05T21:08:27Z

Quite simplistic but fits the theme well. Improvements I would suggest include; adding some more game feel elements (screen shake, enemies knockedback on hit, some audio feedback). Some background music would have been good as well.

Super Wall Paint! by beepyeah 2017-12-06T17:37:42Z

A simple yet unique game. A nice take on the theme. The overall aesthetic works well and is charming. I would have liked some sort of checkpoint system for levels so I didn't have to start again (which might have been a design choice due to the game emulating an old school arcade style - in which case I would have added a code system so that if you get to a certain level you can enter a code in the main menu to start from there.) Overall fun.

The Party by JackIsaacs 2017-12-04T14:42:53Z

Nice take on the theme. Good simplistic but functional art style. Would have liked some more interactions; such as throwing booze outside of the house or kicking couples out of the bedroom *wink*!

Just Another Space Game by nizlow 2017-12-04T15:51:00Z

Cool little game. It was fun to try and swerve out of the way of oncoming asteroids. The sound effects were charming (did you produce one of them with your mouth? and another sounds like tapping?) Bravo if that's the case! I did find colliding with the asteroids to be frustrating occasionally (you could collide against the same one by just scraping past it). You could resolve that issue by having the asteroid you collide with bounce off in the opposite direction to you upon impact.

Candyspotting by Nage 2017-12-04T16:17:14Z

Really liked the world design and the music. I knew that I had to collect candy - I managed to collect one - but then I couldn't pick up any more? Controls were slightly clunky as well.

Mineirinho by rmc 2017-12-05T19:51:13Z

I like the design of the character and the concept of the game. It would be cool if you could dynamically move the camera and I got far to greedy and grabbed as much gold as I could and had no way to throw it so that I could still move.

Oh no! Zombies! by Benjamin San Souci 2017-12-06T20:25:58Z

I really liked the addition of many different guns that gameplay-wise acted differently. I like the inclusion of multiple enemy types and the design of the characters. I would look into some more game feel aspects (some great youtube videos on it) that will help your bullets feel more impactful, which will make the game even more fun (you already have some by implementing some bullet spread and different fire rates for your guns). Good job!

LD42 — Running out of space

Outrunning Space! by drludos 2018-08-14T10:57:10Z

A very clever idea. Good job!

Deposition by dunin 2018-08-13T13:43:01Z

The great paper drought is here! Honestly one of my favourite entries so far. Wonderfully written, beautifully drawn - loved that the typewriter keys aligned with the keyboard inputs, loved that the typewriter malfunctions sometimes and I loved the dual paths you could play (didn't have the same effect on me because I played it alone but the idea was good). I really would have loved some jazzy background music to give it that bit extra, with regards to atmosphere. I would have also liked to have been able to click to skip through dialogue once I had read it (not during the interview stage though because that seemed to be timed well). Overall, really good job!

Volant Islands by wujood 2018-08-13T15:49:37Z

Great job on the game! I absolutely loved the art style and animations. The levels taught the game mechanics well. A couple of qualms I had was that sometimes a tile would be destroyed before I had really walked on it (some sort of collision issue I think) and the game didn't function at the correct resolution when in full screen. Cool game overall!

ROOS? by Genpaku 2018-08-13T12:55:59Z

Cool idea! Could have used a few UI assets to spruce it up but the core gameplay was good. Nice job!

Blockie by kamikaziuk 2018-08-13T16:00:07Z

Good job on the game! It has some great music and wonderful game feel. The art was simple but very pleasing and functional and the concept fits the theme well. My issue is that the game is somewhat luck based - you do have to position yourself in the most likely safe place but the block loading seems random so really it's up to the game how well you do. A good job overall.

Reloader by Vodzik 2018-08-14T12:20:33Z

Good job on the game! A nice idea but it's a bit slow for me. Nice 3D assets though but the UI could use improvements. The crane functions well. Good job.

AL - A Choose Your Own Adventure by starvingindie 2018-08-13T16:43:52Z

Wow, what an utterly beautiful looking choose your own adventure. Loaded with humour and a fantastic piece of music. There are also a good amount of branching paths. My only qualms -and this is all I could really come up with - are that it's a bit (huge emphasis on 'bit') arduous to have to scroll down for every new piece of story after a decision. It also wasn't immediately obvious that you could click and use the items in your inventory during decisions. Overall, a fab game!

Precious Things by Patrick Woodcock 2018-08-13T18:17:58Z

Good job on the game! I liked the concept and the art style was great. It got pretty tense at times, trying to stuff things onto the pile to stop it all toppling over. I very nearly beat the super-hoarder difficulty. I would have liked a bit of music or some sound effects to give it just a bit more character and a bit more game feel in the UI. Good job overall!

Running out of Keys by OadT 2018-08-13T19:20:16Z

Great job on the game! It took a little to get used to what I was meant to be doing but it was really compelling once I understood. The puzzles were probably a bit tough at the beginning but certainly solvable when you've spent a bit of time working it out.

OVERKILL by earnso 2018-08-13T13:02:35Z

The art was great and the procedurally generated bullet drops were cool. The enemies bodies becoming the terrain was also good. I would have preferred a more snappy jump on the main character and I didn't like having to move in a direction to shoot in that direction (I know it's common in other games and I think it's just a personal preference). The shooting sound got a bit grating at time as well - especially on high rate of fire weapons. Overall, good job!

MinoFall by Ashment 2018-08-13T18:31:01Z

Great job on the game! It took me a little while to realise that I wasn't the one choosing the direction of the shot, when I understood that it was all good. I also thought I was doing pretty badly and then suddenly I had cleared the entire board due to the leftover pieces falling down and making lines - which was satisfying. The music and art style are both great. My old issues are that the pieces seemed to fall quite slowly and I rarely saw pieces that weren't just L shapes. The score text is also drastically different to the rest of the art style which is a bit jarring. Overall, wonderful effort.

Manspreader by Rob White 2018-08-13T13:08:15Z

@call-me-nutty Thanks for playing and leaving a comment! I know exactly what you mean, it certainly does get samey after a while. @runner-alien suggested making it into a rhythm game which is a great idea and was certainly something I considered. Unfortunately I've never made a rhythm game before, due to my sheer lack of musical ability, but it's certainly something to look into because I think that it would make the game more fun.

Manspreader by Rob White 2018-08-13T13:14:14Z

@ghen Thanks for playing! A mensplaining game is certainly something to look out for in a future LD!

@alexkarate I understand your view. My though process was that manspreader's are always running out of space (due to manspreading to their total potential). You could also look at it from the humans perspective, they're running out of space due to this crazy man manspreading across the park. Another way of looking at it is that the screen is getting progressively more full of humans strolling along on their daily walks in the park, therefore the screen is running out of space.

@albin Thanks for playing! Really appreciate the comments.

@stephano Hey that's a pretty good score to be honest. It's arond the 7500 mark that the game gets a bit unrealistically difficult.

@mcccclean I know what you mean. I did want to do something like that but I couldn't think of a way of doing it that didn't look really ugly.

@kostbllb Haha, I try my best :P

Manspreader by Rob White 2018-08-13T13:15:18Z

@krapht A laugh and a cringe is good with me. It fuels me. Thanks for playing!

Manspreader by Rob White 2018-08-13T13:44:18Z

@paden-shorey Thanks for playing! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your comments.

Manspreader by Rob White 2018-08-13T15:18:30Z

@donitz Thanks for the comment! I was actually thinking of One Finger Death Punch when considering how I would turn manspreading into a game so I'm pretty glad that you drew that comparison. Thanks for playing!

@fryderider Glad that it did! Thanks for playing!

Manspreader by Rob White 2018-08-14T08:50:00Z

@thegunmaster Thanks for playing! I agree that the core gameplay is a bit lacking, I wanted to add a few more mechanics but I got a bit distracted during the jam.

@mike-inprinciple Haha, that's a take on the theme that I had not considered. Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed it!

Pig Pile by GreenBoxGames 2018-08-13T19:10:31Z

Great job on the game! The art and animations are fantastic, so is the music and sound effects. The core gameplay also works really well. I only encountered a slight bug in which one of the enemies got stuck next to one of my meaty blocks. I would have also liked mouse support for menu options. Good game overall!

Unfamiliar by Kovakomes 2018-08-14T11:45:27Z

Wow, what a powerful experience. Atmospherically it was perfect. Good job!

Noah's Help! by Ian Kettlewell 2018-08-14T12:59:46Z

Wonderful job on the game! The art style is absolutely lovely and the sound effects are very charming. It has a good array of easy to challenging levels - I actually managed to complete them all (although I'm pretty certain that giraffes are my new least favourite animal). It would have been cool to have a bit of peaceful music playing in the background and a bit more game feel with the animals -e.g. when you pick them up they scale in size slightly and then shrink back down (adds a nice popping effect that would be good for placing them down on the board as well). There's also a slight issue with the order of the sprites (you should have the animal that's being held at the front, currently some hide behind other animal sprites). Overall, a really great game!

Climb by Albin 2018-08-13T12:32:30Z

The player character felt quite stunted and jerky to move around but the artwork really made the game come to life. Good job!

Bob's Budget Bomb Disposal by Dark Roast Studios 2018-08-13T12:52:30Z

I like the idea of having to put the different coloured bombs through different checks and it definitely makes the game hectic as time goes on (which is good for the theme). I didn't like that the truck automatically picked up a bomb I went next to - I would much prefer to press a button to pick up because it is a button press to drop as well (when really it could auto drop the bomb into shoot if it's the correct one). Good job overall!

Raft vs Shark by Batlordz 2018-08-14T11:11:20Z

Great job on the game! I think the game is pretty well balanced. It gets more hectic at a pretty good pace. My only issue is that the wood destruction noise is a bit loud and a bit obnoxious. Only S and D work in WASD controls, would much prefer to use WASD. Good job overall!

Sinking by Bungalow 2018-08-14T10:00:29Z

Good job on the game! The art style is really cool. I did face issues learning the controls in the tutorial because the double jump doesn't work sometimes so I couldn't get past the black hill. Good effort!

Endless cleaner by Alidar40 2018-08-14T15:38:37Z

Good job on the game! I like the idea but I found myself running out of battery power very quickly, it would be handy if there was some sort of passive battery gain so that you don't just run out completely and can't sniff up the batteries on the floor.

Tomb Robbers 3: Curse of the Pharaoh by TheWustache 2018-08-14T09:13:33Z

Hey, good job on the game! I really liked the art style and the music fit really well. The sound effects were also very good - human made sound effects are always a plus. I actually managed to finish the game -that last level was a bloody ballache but very fun overall. Nice work!

Forklift Simulator by CrispyPin 2018-08-13T12:44:49Z

There was something oddly addictive about this. It did feel like there wasn't much to do at times, due to the wrong colour boxes coming through - I wonder if this could be resolved by having more coloured entryways and more shoots pushing boxes in so that it becomes overwhelming eventually but keeps the action moving. The controls of the forklift worked well and the music speeding up was great but was somewhat contradicted by the slow gameplay at the time. Good job overall!

YTTRE by Drabbning 2018-08-13T16:21:24Z

Good job on the game! It has a lovely minimalist art style and great controls. I was also glad to see that the items that spawn don't destroy your ship, just slow it down. It would have been cool to have a sort of endless mode to see how far you could get as well as a bit of music/sound effects - I know it's in space but it would still make it pop a bit.

Memory Muncher by AddVector 2018-08-13T18:04:56Z

Good job on the game! I loved the art style and the screen effect you have implemented. I would say that the first level is probably a bit too long because it's not that hard so it feels like it drags on a bit. I would have also liked to have been able to select the level I play (but I get that the idea is that you need to progress through them for score, I would probably change it to time and have a leader board for each level instead). Overall, really cool entry.

Continuum by Hakro 2018-08-13T12:26:59Z

I really liked the background music for this! I would have preferred for the input to be bound to WASD instead of the arrow keys - because I'm not as used to using that part of my keyboard - but that did add to the challenge and maybe it would be too easy otherwise. Good job!

Compression by JohnyF 2018-08-13T17:54:44Z

Good job on the game! I loved the simple art style and the glitch effects that you've implemented. The glitching does get a bit annoying later on and makes navigating a bit difficult (by design I'm sure). It would have been cool to have a few sound effects and a bit of background music to go along with it. Some parts of the levels could be aligned a bit better for smoother movement. Overall nice job!

Fluffy Tile World by sylvie 2018-08-13T15:39:32Z

Good job on the game! Nice art style and pretty tough puzzling. I managed to get to puzzle 4! I liked that you didn't just have to think about how to do the block puzzle but you also had to consider how to reach the next screen without blocking yourself in. It would have been nice to have had some small sound effects for player movement and a backing track but - as somebody who struggles to get music into a jam game - I know the hardship. Good job!

LD44 — Your life is currency

Bradley's Little Money Maker by Franklins Ghost 2019-05-19T14:18:28Z

I loved the artstyle on this! I would have liked a bit more gameplay but, like you said in your description, you didn't have enough time - it happens.

Worked to Death by ronin748 2019-05-19T14:14:12Z

Relatively enjoyable game. I think it was a bit slow, the first few levels could be completed in a small period of time, leaving you waiting for the day to end.

Meds of Honor by anidealgift 2019-05-19T15:06:28Z

A fun idea! I felt like the aiming was a bit tricky because you couldn't easily tell how far the medkit was going to dip and the buttons on the walls could have done with having slightly bigger colliders so the shot isn't as hard. Overall good job though.

Island Chain by PTSnoop 2019-05-19T17:26:50Z

Good job on the game! It was a very calm game to play - most likely the music - even though hyperinflation was rampant!

Liquify Bo! by GaryS 2019-05-19T15:19:53Z

I good idea and a good range of levels. I did find the game to be a bit frustrating - having to restart right at the bottom again to progress. I would have tested the ability to just place a platform below yourself and carry on instead of destroying yourself and starting again.

Lifetime by AMastryukov 2019-05-19T14:31:22Z

Reminded me of the original GTA. I found it funny that punching could deal more damage than guns. Interesting idea using time as a resource.

The Hostage by Jonathan Lorenz 2019-05-19T17:36:58Z

The game starts off with quite a good atmosphere, which is sadly broken by the jumping sfx - it just feels a bit out of place. The controls are a bit too slippery as well and the jumps are slightly too tight.

Whipout by Armadillq 2019-05-19T15:27:23Z

Felt a bit like one of those rage-games. The music was pumped up and I found the crouch animation to be quite funny. It was just the right level of responsiveness. That sizzle sound effect when you die is a bit grating though.

Soulbound by Dovakla 2019-05-19T17:32:21Z

You managed to pack quite a lot into such a small amount of time, good job. It could have done with a little bit more polish and slightly clearer instructions. Good job overall!

Belinda Bloodmage by PSiv 2019-05-19T14:01:48Z

Cool idea, could have done with having the projectiles be stronger so that the enemies didn't feel quite so tanky.

Attack on Jerry by unplugred 2019-05-19T15:33:24Z

Fun game, well polished. It was a bit confusing on the first wave trying to figure out where exactly the enemies were going to come from.

PunCha-Ching Bag by Ryan Brenner 2019-05-19T15:15:02Z

A charming game - I loved the little people just running around to try and steal your money. It could have done with having the player collider be a bit smaller (it seemed too easy for the people to hit you). The punch felt strong when it hit but also, unfortunately a bit slow. Good job overall!

Blood Money by kristinamay 2019-05-19T14:08:26Z

Quite short but certainly well executed. Loved the idea of a dystopian society in which you spend blood to get things.

Super Psychic by Jackson_makes_games 2019-05-19T14:27:26Z

Quite an interesting idea and interpretation of the theme. Sometimes requires guesswork to succeed - which makes perfect sense with the line of work you're emulating. Good job.

The Giving Thing by Jam373 2019-05-19T15:10:57Z

Probably my favourite entry so far to be honest. It oozes charm and has a subtle, yet impactful story. Great job!

Earn Your Life by aCactus 2019-05-19T23:24:40Z

Cool interpretation of the theme. It would have been better had it worked similarly to a choose your own adventure (spending x time doing x activities unlocking access to further activities in that profession).

It hurts to move on by vjmunhoz 2019-05-19T18:38:32Z

Good level of atmosphere to the game and I loved the old school style to it. I did find the movement to be a bit slow, perhaps settings to speed that up would have made it more enjoyable (or even a mode that just skips the transitions). Good job!

Piggy Bank's Adventure by Comet From Outer Space 2019-05-19T14:34:30Z

Lovely art style. Obviously a little short but the idea and implementation was there.

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Symphonic Mission by PavelDlouhy 2018-05-06T19:41:24Z

An interesting idea. I think it would benefit from having the player start further to the left of the screen. That way you have a bit longer to plan your shots. Cool idea though!

PataPata (Survival Rhythm) by seurimas 2018-05-11T13:58:27Z

Nice idea! It reminded me slightly of magika, the way they have different key combos for different spells. Good artwork as well. The audio was slightly jarring though.

Story Collabs by Maakep 2018-05-10T17:54:45Z

A very interesting idea with some very interesting results! You can always trust random people on the internet to come up with some random plots.

Bridge Run by block97 2018-05-11T11:51:36Z

A really cool idea. I would have liked to have been able to move the inserter back and forth for a bit more control. Good take on the theme!

Nice and simple but conveys the theme well. Nice artwork as well.

I really liked that you added the typing mechanic for what is basically the tutorial text. It makes sure that people actually read the rules before they start playing.

A very cool interpretation of the theme! As a lover of point and click adventures I thought this was pretty good. Obviously quite short but a lot of room for further expansion. The walking sfx was a bit loud, very nice overall though.

Short but sweet. A good homage to Doki Doki Literature Club! The art also had a certain charm to it.

Rythmer by TheWGBbroz 2018-04-23T15:43:42Z

A good interpretation of the theme. Haven't seen a rhythm shooter before. Slightly lacking in content but a good idea all the same.

Always a fan of text adventures! A good idea for the theme and a nice dose of humour.

An interesting aesthetic! I always enjoy games with the mouth made sounds as well!

Agent Patissier by sndr 2018-04-23T15:16:16Z

A novel twist on the theme! Very enjoyable although the camera was a bit harsh at points. I loved the aesthetic of the game; it reminded me a lot of Hotline Miami (the music may have caused that as well). It was interesting testing out all of the different combinations to see what I could make and was overall well polished. As some have suggested you can pass through some of the sections without the use of food but hey, it's 48 hours, it's hard to totally balance and play test in that time. Great job!

Text Royale: The Ultimate Type or Death Fight by Rob White 2018-04-23T15:08:55Z

@sndr Hey! Thanks for playing, I was pretty happy with how it came out in the end. I've just finished playing your game as well which is pretty great! I'll leave a comment with my thoughts and rate it in a second. I just uploaded a new version of my game on itch which "should" fix the canvas size issue. If you can check it out and let me know if it's fixed that would help me out a lot! Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

@Jani-Nykanen Thanks for playing! You can type the 'help' command to get a list of them in game.

@Oivin-F Thanks for playing! My only assumption is that perhaps you didn't have the shotgun equipped (with the equip command).

Shattered Melodies by yancharkin 2018-05-06T19:25:01Z

A very cool concept for a game. I feel like I would be better at the game if the sound effects for you vs your opponent were the same because I have no musical skill whatsoever.

Eyes on the Prize by phearbot 2018-05-06T19:38:45Z

Certainly very unforgiving! A good shot at a topdown shooter though. I feel like it may have been balanced slightly in the favour of multiple players though.

Typewriter Dungeon by Jaime Paz Lopes 2018-04-23T15:28:42Z

I think it's an interesting premise for a game. As somebody mentioned, the educational aspects of this game could be great with further improvements. You could add a combat system in which different weapons have different difficulty/length words associated with them that you need to type in order to deal damage. Whilst you're doing that, enemies could be simulating typing words to damage you (maybe there are words associated with the armour you're wearing, the better the armour, the longer the word the enemy has to spell to hurt you). Overall a good interpretation of the theme, although I would probably speed the player character up a bit.

Kleptomaniac by MrGago 2018-05-06T19:30:13Z

A cool little game. I liked that you were given an extra turn to escape from the room if you got caught. The art and sound design was good. Would have preferred to use WASD controls, although ASD did work - just not W.

Nicely done! I liked how you span the theme. The writing was also very much on point.

A cool simple concept. Nicely matches the theme.

Adventure Pong by TomPK7 2018-05-11T11:57:16Z

A fun take on the theme. The commands were intuitive which is pretty important for this type of game. Nicely done!
