Very beautiful game!

Very beautiful game!
I get "Debug.zip appears malicious" when I download in Chrome.
Interesting idea! I look forward to a post-compo version.
I was confused the first two times I played - I didn't even realize they had all died at first. But I finally figured it out, and it's pretty fun. I like simulation games like this. Maybe it would be good if there were some graphical representation of the population? (I like bars - filled my game with 'em).
The controls and the physics are nice, but not much gameplay yet. Randomly abducting goats did turn out to be fun though.
I've never seen a town with so many important buildings!
Repetitive but still somewhat enjoyable. It bothers me that Muffin has no arms or legs. Good job doing a tutorial at the beginning! More games could use that - mine included.
This is a very complete game! It's easy to learn, hard to master. I only wish there were some explosions, and maybe some power-ups.
Great gameplay! I stuck with it to the end.
Great concept (were you planning for parallel worlds?), and I love the way the people die.
I had a real hard time jumping over the triangles in the second board though.
Love your cartoon style. The concept is very original and fits the theme perfectly. I wish you had time to put in real, evil dialogue snips instead of "bla".
Very fun! I made it to the end but how do you kill the princess??
I like the theme of trolls and I like the cartoony art style.
I just wish the troll had more than kicks to offer those horrible creatures because it gets repetitive.
I love the art style of the alien monster. It's terribly hard to stay alive. Also - how do i eat the planet?
That's one powerful cat! This game made me LOL. Good job.
That's one powerful cat!
Pro: Lots of fun! I like the controls.
Con: Too short - i want more fun. Also took a while to find and click the first button i needed to push.
I couldn't get past the first enemy. :(
But the ice and other graphics look nice.
Graphics / levels were amazing given the time. I thought the stork mini-game seemed out of place, but otherwise it was enjoyable for a play-through.
I really like the concept of playing a chaos-creating stock trader. But sadly the game needs some UI improvements. I found it hard to know if i had enough money to buy more stock, and it was hard to tell at a glance whether i was winning or losing.
Pro: Fun and satisfying to stab the villagers.
Con: Jumping is tough!
another screenshot or explanation? I don't know what this is...
Pro: Neat idea for a puzzle game!
Suggestions: Make it easier for my eye to see how close I am to being detected without taking my view off my movements (it's very fast-paced!); maybe a change of color or a closing in circle. Also is needs to more evil. :)
Pro: The meatball minions are very amusing
Con: Needs more things to do...
Funny, sacrilegious idea!... and wonderful artwork!
Gameplay could be smoother though.
I feel like I'm falling deeper!
It didn't work for me. It started up, I saw the shark and the "X" and "C" indicators. I pressed every key, but none did anything.
I know the icons aren't exactly obvious, so here's a quick explanation:
- Horned Star = Notoriety
- Dollar Coin = Money
- Green Clown = Insanity (100 -> madness)
- Red Eye = Suspicion (100 -> jail)
- Blue Brain = Genius Points (not used)
- Gray Cloud = Dud (nothing happens, no progress)
- Yellow Lightbulb = Scheme Innovation (not used)
- Bloody Dagger = Scheme Tactic Chance (gives a bonus during the execution phase)
As hard as the game is, there *is* an ending. ...Of course it'll require 10000 coins.
Thanks for all the good, helpful and inspiring comments! I've already begun working on designing some updates to the gameplay to make it more interactive. I can't wait to have time to make some improvements.
However, as for the LD25 version, wally2069 made a post that made me realize that I shouldn't have included the sound files that I did because they were not made by me (albeit available for free to anyone on freesound.org). For some reason I thought small sound samples were okay, but I don't think so after re-reading the rules. I just updated the game at the links above -- all I changed was to comment out any sound-playing code, and removed the sound files completely. Please adjust your scores appropriately. So sorry about that! Next time I'll know better.
Of course, the most current version of the game on my site will still have the sound, but please do not rate me on that. Thanks!
Curious - Has anyone had the enduring patience to beat the game? I know I haven't! If you care to cheat, I'll give you this console hint: dg.character.money++; :)
Thank you all for your votes! I'm honored that you put my game in the top 5% for Theme, and that you found the game funny. Next time I'm definitely going to work harder on making the game fun!
@ donmilham & rvmook -- unfortunately I never implemented a way to effecrively click the action icons and have them affect your scores. Maybe in a post-compo version...
Very cool concept, and I love the graphic style.
I haven't figured out anything deeper than (1) pick the row with the tallest things, (2) mow it down. Good potential.
Might be a nice touch to show the monster eagerly waiting behind the scenes while you are looking over the board.
Simple to play and enjoyable! Not sure why I have to leave though. I killed everyone, so I should take over. :)
Great ideas and wonderful art style!
I got stuck at my first battle with the archer though.
The title is funny, but it could just as well be called 'Dove genocide'
Amazing concept and very polished!
Suggestions: Can i be gentler to the eyes without sacrificing the cool hex graphic style? Also an easy level to start would be good.
How are they even hurting a black hole anyway? :)
Excellent! Complete in every way. I don't even know how to improve it.
I agree with everyone: very powerful and great music.
Very solid game! I like the graphics and the gameplay is very interesting.
I couldn't make it very far.
but if it had a voice-over it could make a good children's game or game engine.
Wonderfully polished! Great artwork, gameplay, graphics, etc.
I haven't quite figured out any particular strategy to playing though...
Very good start! It does become a bit easy - especially with missiles!
It's a very cute game, and it was fun to extort the villagers. It was too hard though, as others have said.
Very nice presentation. I love the 2d graphics on the 3d board, and the randomness is very enjoyable. One of my favorites! What did you build this in?
Really fun! This is one of the most replay-able games I've played in LD so far. My highest glory was 82% but i also had a nice massacre of 13 men.
Interesting but i kept running way too fast and dying almost instantly. I want to keep playing though...
Pro: Love the style of it, like the way the people move and buildings are taken over
Con: took me a while to realize i had to use wasd to move the view around; the cops should be more evil somehow to fit the theme, otherwise it feels like I'm on the good side
Nice art style and nice that's in the html.
Suggestion: add more depth - something else for us to click on or think about besides 'left', 'right',...
Great game, my favorite so far! I even beat it. :)
Is the GL stuff from a framework?
I really like the art style and the gameplay. I only wish you could do something actually villainous.
I love the simple bouncing circle-guys. The social commentary is as good as the gameplay.
Wonderful pixel art and gameplay... except I'll echo matthias - movement on those keys is very hard since i also need my fingers to hit 'c' and space.
The graphics are amazing and inspiring! That's one of the best robots I've seen in a video game. He's even fun to watch after he's "dead".
I agree with shatterhand - the screen should be less shaking and chaotic, at least at the start. After a while, let the world go haywire and let the sun spin.
Very polished!
The intro is very confusing, but the gameplay is very satisfying.
Cool idea... Fun but frustrating to start over. Are the diamonds and gold needed for anything or just points w/ no gameplay value?
Great concept! It only has 3 flaws right now: frequent crashes when i hit 't', no way to get back into the battle quickly, and no way to brake. It would be great to be able to speed up to travel somewhere and then turn around and send out a blast to make your ship come to a halt.
I really enjoyed this game! The graphics were nice, it fit the theme great and was actually funny. It's impressive for 48 hours! My only complaint is that it needs some more hints on what to do next. I needed to consult the walkthrough - something I don't like doing.
I have become the thing that I hate! :) It is very satisfying to steal all the parts. The art style is wonderful and the gameplay is simple but fun.
I would've liked to have some kind of maneto-gravity power that I can activate to pull parts in... just for something to do other than zap, zap, zap.
I really enjoyed this game! The controls are very smooth and the animations for the laser fire is superb.
It's just a little too hard - I couldn't kill more than 1 space station without taking too much hull damage.
If you made this into a full-fledged game, I would definitely buy it.
This is a very ambitious game. I love how you can design your own ship, and I like how you can order your crew to different modules. The ship combat is kind of boring though. It needs some animations and sounds to give it the feeling of urgency.
I'd like to see a post-compo version if you make one.
I beat it!
Great kind of game for a 48hr compo... I don't know where the phone comes from...
Whoops, I don't think you created that background image.
Impressive puzzler! The only things I would add are a way to view the whole board, and more animations to make pie even cuter.
I just speed-clicked through the Climb link and I won.
Game not there :(
I have no idea what I'm doing in this game, but it is very charming! Graphics and sound are really good but it needs a little intro or tutorial.
Neat idea. I like games where the character is semi-autonomous. Great graphics too!
Thanks for all the feedback so far! I'm aware that it is much too easy. I wanted to make it so the natives of an opposing color were actually hostile, and add a whole combat mechanic based on crafting spears, but didn't get to it. Updates and info on the creation: http://deathraygames.tumblr.com/tagged/LD48
I knew I'd see a Mondrian game! Points for theme, although this type of gameplay frustrates me and my bad coordination.
That was the only one i played this LD that deserves a 5 for humor. :)
I enjoyed the concept and the narrative was good.
Picking up the potatoes is hard. But it's so cute; your art style and animation are incredible.
Cartoons are amazing! Gameplay was a little fun. It could've used some kind of power-ups or added complexity... I think I would prefer a choose-your-own-adventure comic with this comic style.
I've heard of 8-bit, but this is like 3-bit. :)
I agree with MRvanderPants. The ship builder was good but when I was in space i didn't understand if i was making good choices or bad choices, nor did i know which to choose.
Great art! Not the most fun, but so pretty to look at.
I believe it is against rule #2 to use content created by others, even if they're free.
I like the mood of this game from the simple, eeire music to the simple terrain. I also really enjoyed the movement because it was familiar enough to use, but tricky enough to keep me interested. Unfortunately however after a few minutes I went a few big circles and realized there are no clues to let me know whether I'm on the right track or not.
Very cool idea. It is a bit hard though. I think it needs some feedback to help you understand if you're doing a good thing or a bad thing. Perhaps after you place a new zone it'll look through all the existing zones and flash a color if the zone "likes"/"dislikes" the change.
Great points for innovation, but I wasn't able to pick up anything so couldn't do much of the game. I had a lot of fun trying to move around though. This would make a great educational game!
Amazing! Great idea, well executed. Lots of 5 stars. Your level designs are wonderful.
The only thing I'd add is some nice mood music, some slight tweaks to the jumping mechanics, and even more levels!
Same for me - scratch website down.
I'll echo mire: "love the meditation mechanic, it made each combat scene a fun game of positioning and solves the mana potion problem very nicely."
Also, it would be neat if you could knock back enemies with your staff - not for damage but to give you time to recharge a bit. I also wish there was more health. I wasn't able to make it to the boss. :/
It's like Guitar Hero on a keyboard! Not my cup of tea, but well done.
I think with a few graphics, it would be easier to track the number of people in line and sales, rather than trying to look at the numbers as they flash by. I'm not really sure what parameters to pick for each day.
Hmm. I couldn't tell if what I was doing was good or bad. Everything just vanishes...
I was playing this game way before it was on the Most Coolness list. :) I like the graphics, but I couldn't figure out the gameplay... wish it was longer.
That gave me a laugh!
Neat little puzzle. You should make more levels.
LOL! I played through the whole thing and began picturing the game in my head based on the text and music. Excellent humor & music, and it fits the theme great.
Very original and had a great mood, but a bit too challenging for my taste.
I was killed by fries on wheels! (score 291 on my first try) It's a very basic but fun game for 1 or 2 tries. Maybe you could make it so when you beat the main game it adds more countries!
Really great art style and animations; coin explosions was very satisfying. I just felt like I wasn't making any tactical decisions. Just need to buy more guys each turn and hope the monsters don't have more.
Aww. Only Linux?
Adorable! I got frustrated with the platforming while inside the tree, but I loved the atmosphere and the animation of the main character.
I died from an alien invasion of Earth before I turned 1. :)
I like your music and your block animation. I think the art style fits perfectly with the theme. The concept of life choices is a good one - reminds me a little of my own mini-LD entry from a few months back - but way more fun.
waiting for players... :(
5 stars for graphics and mood!
very clever!
Thanks for the comments!
Sorry, but right now the game is temporarily down due to a database problem with my host. And there also may be a bug that is unintentionally locking the games, which is why you may see none available to join. Hopefully I can have it back up and fixed soon.
look forward to a post compo version
i had trouble with the left hand...
File-upload.net seems like a spam site. I tried all download buttons and they all brought me somewhere else. Please host somewhere reputable like dropbox.
Amusing when the movement breaks, and pretty fun for a few tries. With some graphics and a little slower to start this would be real fun!
You get high points for mood, but definitely low for humor. I like the art style, and the game was interesting, but a little hard to figure out. I didn't know whether i was doing well or not.
interesting , reminds me of an old game i once made. it needs some sound tho.
Too luck-dependent, but it's still fun.
needs instructions
Congrats on making a multi-player game! Once I read how to go into other lands and I unlocked my avatar, I enjoyed it a little bit more. But it does seem to be too easy. No real decision points other than build, build, build, burn, build,...
I couldn't get past the second jump either, but i like the graphics, sound, and the title. :)
great use of theme!
Amazing graphics and the gameplay was surprisingy fun. I'd like to see more chapters. (I did get stuck back outside though...)
I wond despite one dead crew member, one hungry, one insane, and an engine malfunction. I had trouble figuring out the gameplay (I still don't know what I'm doing or who has what affliction), but I really love the concept!
Very original concept and pretty challenging and fun. I found it a little confusing to figure out though. It might help to have the instructions on the game screen. Also I got confused not knowing I should click on the next planet.
It was pretty fun. I only wish I knew why a tree is needed for egg nog. I really enjoyed the graphics in the cave - like others said - cool parallax! I did some similar tree chopping in one of my previous games (Tundra King), but I never did anything with it.
I love this concept, I just wish there were more to the game. Your art style is truly amazing, and your list of inspirational games is great. I hope you keep making game and do a kickstarter eventually
This looks suspect...
Controls are a little too sensitive - I find myself flying off the screen. wish I could go up more than once.
You've done everything great - animation, graphics, gameplay. I only wish I could make the window larger. Also it crashed on me once.
Very nice! I wish it were a little more challenging, but I like the concept and the gameplay.
Sorry about that, there was a data issue that was preventing the game from actually progressing along. It should be fixed now. The world is getting populated, and you should start to see some rent income. (Although it's possible there's a bug with that too... Unfortunately my testing in real-life scenarios was very minimal.)
Sorry about the errors! My hosting company has a very bad system for database connections and it seems that after a while it starts to throw errors and I have to call them to fix it. It should be fixed for now though.
Thank you to everyone who has played so far. Ruby City has a big lead. For new players - let's try to get the other cities built up! Scroll to the right before picking a plot...
The arrow-firing was pleasantly challenging, and the enemies are entertaining looking. But I eventually realized I had no idea how to get out, which led me to just to run through the enemies... to my death. Impressive use of three.js.
Great artwork and excellent mood. I found the monster pretty frightening. I hope you keep working on this.
I didn't quite get the gameplay and don't know enough about Belarus to make sense of the humor. But the music did make it funny.
I'm no good at platformers, so I gave up quickly. Any way to make the view size larger?
Haha! The slapping was really enjoyable, and the whole thing was fun.
I like the cartoons and humor, and you captured the theme perfectly!
You captured the feeling of being in the dark with a flashlight perfectly! I was thinking of an idea along these lines at first but didn't know how to pull it off. You did it, well done.
Ha! High points for humor and the game works well. Only thing: I wish i could throw the food underhand so it's slower, rather than firing it out like a bullet.
(BTW: My game should be playable now.)
Excellent! That was very fun. My alien plant was very well fed. The only thing I would add is some kind of splatter effect for humans that get accidentally flung into the air. :) I did that a lot.
Wow, I have a little trouble figuring out why it's fun, but it is! High points for Fun and Humor! I want this game on my Android.
The angel saying that I found finish the game at the beginning makes me want to do it even more. :) challenge accepted! I almost have my first duck.
Save doesn't seem to work. :(
Very good - lots of little touches that make it visually very charming. High marks for mood. I especially liked how you could see the old levels in the background.
High points for fun! One of my favorite Ludum Dare games! Is there any way to fix the ship? I wanted to keep playing but it was frustrating to slowly get weakened by endless pirates.
Very cool concept and nice level design. The controls were a little wonky... or maybe it's just weird that they only work in perpendicular directions.
I had to force it close also, the game didn't end on me. It's twisted, but works well. No real challenge, just pure mayhem
Not much of a game, but the artwork's not bad.
The space future is harsh! I only lived to 58. It's a pretty interesting concept. I'd like to see how old people can make it to. The one thing you might want to improve is the icons for each planet - when the planets are close together it can be confusing to figure out which icons are for which planet.
The game was very deep, with a lot of content. Excellent mechanics, graphics, animations, etc.
Excellent graphics and really good gameplay. I stuck with it and beat the game! I gave only 1 star for overall though because, like someone mentioned, you have to include your source code.
That was a very fun little puzzler game! Good use of theme.
Can we get a zip instead of a rar?
My highest was 99.6sec. Simplest controls possible but still challenging and fun. Great game!
That dog definitely has his priorities wrong - getting bones when the world is being destroyed. It's pretty cute even though it's dark! (I got 661.)
Graphics are nice and you can tell there was a lot of thought into level design. I don't typically like these types of games, but I still had fun. The death noise is very annoying though! Since you die so often, it would be nice if dying was less jarring.
Still working on fixing a game-breaking bug with the transmitting...
Ok, game should be playable now! Code changes can be tracked on GitHub for those who are interested. (GitHub repo may eventually include post-compo changes too.)
Thanks for the feedback! The slowness was supposed the be intentional, forcing you to get an upgrade to increase speed, but you're right - it puts too much of a damper on the game early on. Unrelated Pro Hint: One of the in-game hints in a lie (unintentionally).
I like that you can upgrade your gun. I found myself just running and jumping and shooting through each level to just try and get to the end as fast as possible. That got me far, but not far enough. The jump sound needs to be changed!
LOL. I knew there was a twist... But i had to look at the other comments to know where to go. Like others have said, incredible mood!
I loved the graphics and the open-world aspect of it.
I can't figure out how to advance the turn, so I'm stuck. But the music is 5 stars and the concept seems good.
This comments sums it up for me too: "6/5 humor. But now I'm depressed." Depressing, funny, and I'm sure most of us can relate!
Everything in the comments above are accurate - "beautiful, but really hard" ... I can make it to the 2nd enemy but no further. It's a shame because the visuals and mood are wonderful. I really hope you release a post-compo version with improved combat so I can explore further.
I don't understand what I should do.
Like others said: it's impressive that it's multiplayer, but it doesn't play very smoothly.
Graphics are great and the gameplay was very engaging. I just had a lot of trouble with the controls - trying to mash the "w" key to swim up while also navigating left/right. If the "up" key was space or anything else, that would help.
I really like the graphics and lighting. The arms are definitely hard to control though... I mostly felt like a bulldozer. One thing I'd improve is to give some tip at the very beginning; I didn't even notice the tiny character that I was controlling.
I got about 8300 for my best score. (Hard to keep track of because you can keep playing and earning points after you're dead.) Addicting and fun!
Very nice looking... but no real gameplay, right?
I really love the concept! But it's very difficult. I can't seem to make it anywhere. Maybe if it starts off on a non-deadly planet so the player can practice a landing first...
Great game! I like everything about it! The only thing i would change is to make Uncle Jack have a few hearts so we don't have to start over just from one hit.
Doesn't look like your screenshot and doesn't seem to work. :(
Controls don't seem to work for me.
It's missing quite a bit, but like others have said - it's a great start. I like the lighting and the world rotation the best.
Nice graphics and polish. It seems a little easy with the bayonet!
That's a great idea, and it was pretty fun to play. But the movement is very glitchy/laggy! Curious what happens if there are no other humans online.
^ Same here. :(
Nice idea! I had fun trying to break the game by hoping on a block and moving it around with the force.
Screenshots look nice but my security settings keep blocking the java file from running. :(
Very impressive for 48 hours!
The music + the fact that it was a top-down space game were my favorite parts. I'm guessing the building doesn't work and there is no way to attack or enemies yet? One thing I think you should consider adding is a map/minimap or guides to the nearest planet. It's easy to get lost.
Great game! Perfect use of the theme and I LOVE your graphic style.
With all the testing I did - getting to 100% on a small planet - my hand kind of hurts. :) But glad you're all enjoying the game!
Interesting concept, good marks for innovation. A bit hard to start with. I'd suggest making the ship go a little slower for the first level. Also it wasn't obvious that the graphic meant I was dropping off packages, I thought i had to get them from one planet and drop them off at another.
Well done! Artwork and music and mood are great.
As others have said, it's hard without a controller. I think for those of us with a mouse and keyboard it should be: move with wasd and swing just by moving the mouse.
I got stuck on the 2nd level. I like the concept and the humor and art style, but I don't like the darkness -- it just adds one too many levels of complexity.
My high score was 13. It's tough! Seems a bit random, but it's still fun.
Graphics look beautiful. Will you make a Unity web version?
For some reason the "Play" button doesn't work all the time. Once it randomly did, but I was too confused about what all the buttons were, and I died. You should provide a graphic that explains what each button does, some introduction, etc. The graphics are really good and I like the concept though.
I made 733 spacebucks! :) This game gets high marks for innovation! And even though it is a parody of a mundane job, it was quite fun. Also - your alien characters were very stylish!
I wish that the phrase book was on the screen the whole time and didn't require me to click the button each time; and it would be awesome if there was some alien speaking/jibberish audio to go along with the alien words.
Amazing graphics and concept! ...but the gameplay was far too hard. After dying a dozen times I finally got used to the controls, but then I realized that after a jump or two there were no more islands on my screen. Shooting chains randomly at chunks out of view meant I ran out of time every time. It would be nice if the screen auto-zoomed out if the islands are too far away.
I'm not a big platformer fan, but I liked the graphics.
This is very impressive! It's exactly the kind of game I enjoy. Only trouble is the mining seems to be broke. I fine an asteroid, hit it with my Q mining laser, but nothing happens. Also I don't know how to find my way back to the base.
Amazing artwork style! I really enjoyed the discovery process on each level. Sadly I couldn't get past the coin/maze level. :( Sad because I really want to keep adventuring in these artistic worlds.
I third what laremere said. Hard to believe this is a LD entry; it should be in the app store.
I appreciate the whale. ;)
Smiting enemies is very satisfying. Very good game, high score for innovation. I only wish the little men kept fighting rather than walking past each other and hanging out at the end of the board.
Mood +100000 The beautiful art and music combine with the simple gameplay and surreal world to create a really unique experience. Well done!
5 stars for innovation and theme! This is very creative and devilishly hard. I made it to the left-side, but not past the red slider things.
This looks like a great idea. I agree with a previous comment that the key combination didn't work well for me though.
It's a little difficult, but the artwork is good and it has good humor. I agree w/ scias' comment.
Great use the of the theme, nice graphics and nice gameplay. My high score was 6 chests. The only thing I would improve is to make it even speedier to re-start the level after you die.
High score of 14. Definitely high marks for innovation!
To buy furniture, you'll need 1000 coins. Click on yourself (the guy wearing the crown), then choose "Buy Furniture" then choose one. It will be randomly placed. Sorry.
Thanks for the nice comments. If you're interested in further development, follow me (deathraygames) on Twitter or Tumblr. If I know people will play, I'll keep at it. I already made a few more fixes to the post-compo version to address the slow movement.
I really thing NASA/Starfleet needs to invest in some toolbelts! :) This is one of the most enjoyable games I've played in a while. I escaped on my first try, but it was an exciting experience the entire time. (Incidentally I disagree with BKGH - I think the timing/suprises works really well.) Love the art style and simplicity of it all.
Wonderful art and I love the concept. Would have been nice if it was more playable though and had a slower ramp-up to the action so you could explore the ship before being attacked.
I wasn't able to figure out how to zoom out. :( The arrows didn't seem to do anything. I like the kick-back on the shooting though.
Wave 7, 30 kills on my first go. Wave 19, 192 kills once I figured out that I could switch weapons and I should stay on the high perch and be a sniper. Lots of fun!
I like all the little touches: locking doors, different ammo, etc. It's just so small my eyes hurt!
@ViliX64 -- Hacking/cyberwarfare is the most "unconventional weapon" I could think of.
@ManicMiner -- I should've added some kind of tutorial. I'll add a few more notes to the description, but basically: clicky click click.
Glad some of you are enjoying it!
Great game! Intro was amazing, concept is very creative, artwork is solid. The dive-bomb was confusing at first, as others have said, but once i understood you have to pull back like a sling-shot, it worked well. Really like this game.
I got angry and my dumb, slow fingers. "Lightning" is so hard to type under pressure! Nice game.
I like the effect of the bamboo growing up and skewering things. The controls are a little wonky though -- but good for such a short time spent on the game play. The pandas are very nice-looking.
Like Chris said, this would make a great educational typing tutor. I wish there was a little different feedback to know which words were good or bad -- it all happens so fast. I enjoyed it. Nice music!
Very innovating idea - I've never seen anything like it. I like how you simulated environments with sound and simple shapes - it really worked well. I also like the simplicity of the "bar" mechanic. I couldn't get past the university level though.
Nice use of the theme and I like the concept and genre. I also like how you can repaint the ground - a nice little touch. Unfortunately I found the controls infuriating, so I wasn't even able to make a complete movie.
Interesting... too bad I can't play it.
Pretty neat! It needs a progress bar like progress quest; it's a little hard to know how far along I am.
The pun title made me laugh right away, and the juxstaposition of all these themes was pretty awesome. I like how it uses only one button (hold vs tap). Music is very appropriate too. Nice work.
So weird, but in a laugh-out-loud kind of way. I can't beat the end boss, but i suppose that's on purpose.
I didn't really know what I was doing... There needs to be more feedback when you try to activate a trap... but I still had fun. No idea how I won!
Great game! Like someone else said -- I wish the placement mattered more. I like the graphics but I wish they were bigger so I can see them more. I'd like to see this expanded on.
I think the genre -- even if overdone a bit -- is perfect for game jams where there's not enough time to make something more complex. I always try to add in a new twist in some way. Hope some people enjoy it! (Hint: The post-compo one is more fun, if you're looking to play for fun and not for jam judging purposes.)
This is great! You and I thought of the same idea, but I really love how you implemented it.
I had fun clicking for a little while!
525 clicks! I won! I didn't really pay attention to getting the minimum number of clicks though...
High scores for innovation and theme! I definitely enjoyed it. (My game is jealous of your tentacles!)
Great game! Wonderful use of the theme, and I love how you let the user be creative.
Like others said: great job with the theme and the two-button controls.
This is probably the funniest LD game I've seen. Good job! The mini-games offered a good variety, each with their own humor. Driving is terribly hard.
Great to see another reptilian overlord game like my own! (we have to stick together... not that I'm a reptile or anything...)
I fixed 3 bugs: framework should no longer completely die if it can't load all components in the right order; population calculation no longer counts missing citizens; character can no longer switch parties.
I really enjoyed the shadow mechanic of this gameplay. It felt innovative yet remained challenging. good job balancing that!
I like that bugs listed seem like super-powers. :)
The game amusing enough, but was lacking in the mood/backstory department.
Ack! I got stuck on level 3. I don't really understand why I transform next to certain blocks or what I need to do to get to the next level. It's sad because I really enjoy the aesthetics and peacefulness of the game.
I liked the elemental forms... but the enemies were a little boring. Would be nice if there were different enemies vulnerable to different forms.
Please add an HTML5 version! This looks great.
The good: Graphics were nice, animation was good, and the layout/perspective was nice.
The bad: It was impossible to know when something was selected, so that leads to a lot of confusion. I eventually figured out that you needed to select a box, then close, load, open, then click the rocket, and launch... but if there was a way to highlight the selection, that would help greatly.
I quite enjoyed the gameplay - splitting, cycling between clouds, then reforming. I loved the hand-painted look of the textures. This is definitely a game worth continuing!
Like others have said: Really great graphics and animation, but a little too hard for my liking. Glad to see someone else making a game where you shapeshift into a reptile!
Good game, although a little too easy. The music was really good, but too fast for a contemplative game like this. I also liked the graphics.
"Dragon" was the first one I tried too... then I resorted to the online document with the list. It seems well executed, but didn't hold my attention for too long.
Five stars for humor and mood! It is incredibly original and well executed.
This is way more fun than it should be. Excellent work on music and science. After a while it was frustrating not having control over the direction I was sending the particles - it kind of turned into a clicking / patience simulator. But, like I said, still fun.
Loved the graphics, simple but engaging gameplay, and the great quotes. I actually didn't quite figure out the lights thing, but did well choosing people based on what they talked about. Good job! (btw - My game had a similar concept: reptilian politicians!)
This is an excellent game! You made the small size seem like a large-enough world; music is great, and the pixel art is perfect.
Artwork is great, and the feel of the game is nice. ~~But I got stuck after talking to the old man and couldn't find a way to progress further.~~ I figured out that I had to talk to a few people a few times in order to get things moving again. EXCELLENT ending! Worth playing until the end. Great job!
Neat concept... I really appreciated the save points because the game was difficult.
Good points for innovation -- this is definitely a concept I've never seen before. The random text was nice and the artwork was creative. But.. I'm also terribly confused by it... "maybe the next universe will turn out better than this one did" <-- I'm not sure what's "better" - is it just whatever I like the best? Also not sure if I should keep trying new universes (i.e., does the last game influence the next?).
Great work on the pixel graphics and animations despite such a low resolution. I really liked the gameplay; great game overall. The only thing I had difficulty with is getting power to the doors - seems like the clicking was a little finicky.
Really nice graphics, but web version seems to be unplayable.
I really like this style of game! Well done! The perfect Ludum Dare game? Just about IMO. The only thing I would change is to make the graphics a little more detailed, or more cohesive. I hope you continue to develop and publish this.
I thought my ship was invisible at first; didn't realize how the building goes. Neat idea to add in some creativity to an otherwise ancient game.
Thanks for all the great feedback everyone! The original energy calculations were certainly kind of off (to put it nicely); I was doing calculations in a weird order. I've fixed that (mostly?) in the post-compo version, and added a new UI, and a few other things that should address some of the well-deserved, constructive criticism brought up by many people. If you want to play the game again for fun after rating, then I'd recommend trying the newer version. ...and follow me on twitter/tumblr/reddit for some (very infrequent) updates.
@tolmera - The screenshot is great - that's an interesting design. I love seeing what people come up with. @thygrrr - I really wish I knew how to make "spacy floaty sounds"! @stormforce02 - Your game looks awesome too.
Thanks so much @tolmera. That video was really wonderful! Version 1.1.2 (some bug fixes, the ability to earn while browser tab isn't in focus, and a slightly bulkier ship) is dedicated to you.
Thanks for the feedback, it's really helpful. (Josh - I'm impressed by your willingness to figure out the game for so long!) I put in a tiny css fix to correct for the navigation and parts menus not scrolling correctly, because with certain sized monitors this is game-breaking. :hammer: I also removed some code that didn't do anything except kill the ability to scroll with the mouse wheel. LD39 version is 1.0.4 ([details here](https://github.com/deathraygames/star-hopper-crank/commit/fa11aae9477f9e8d41817d920b90f4b4b19b60f1)), and the post-compo version (recommended if you want all the UI improvements) is at v1.1.3.
Really interesting, deep game! As an incremental fan, I really appreciated the complexity of this. I didn't quite grasp the significance of the choices on the left. Sadly I accidentally left it open for a while and ended with "Humanity is in revolt, you have become a dictator to them, a maniac machine." :robot:
The artwork - simple but effective artwork, nice colors - and the music - gentle but with a little tension - gave this a great mood. The gameplay was fun and the ramp-up in difficulty was perfect.
I was so confused at first - trying to figure out how to shoot. Then I realized I just need to grab hold of the... uh, joystick, and dodge things. I liked the first-person spaceship view, but wish it would go fullscreen rather than the screen staying so tiny.
I thought the graphics are really nice, and I like the idea of being a superhero. Sadly I found the gameplay a much too frustrating for my tastes.
I like the concept (tower defense), but I couldn't tell whether I was turning towers on or off, or whether I was running out of power. The clicking felt unresponsive a lot of the time. Given the non-stop attacks there was no real time to figure out how best to build a base. I'd recommend three main changes: (1) a brief pause at the start to let the player get the hang of things, maybe with a countdown. (2) a different graphical indication for when a tower is on/off and powered/unpowered, and (3) some indication or countdown to show that construction is happening. I think the game has potential.
Wow, great game! It was so well balanced, the perfect length of gameplay, and good graphics.
I'm guessing you must be a Kerbal fan? I really like the game concept and and graphics are nice. The only obstacle to enjoyment is the zoom level seems off. The game looks nice when zoomed in, but it so close it's almost unplayable, and zoomed out is very import - I wish I could zoom out even more to plan my route. I really hope you continue this game though, because I love the concept! (I've done a couple games with planets and physics too, and it's so much fun to toy around with.)
I had a good deal of fun with this one! The map was quite extensive. I "dried" pretty far in, and didn't have the patience to try again. I only wish there were some upgrades to help me against the growing number of enemies. Good job.
Very cute graphics, and funny take on the theme. More difficult than I imagined. Who is "this guy" and why do I need to dodge him?
Very well designed and implemented! This really feels like a complete game, and I enjoyed the simple-yet-deep mechanics.
Very funny! It was very hard though - I'm not a fast enough tweeter to be president! Sad.
That was a peaceful game that brought a tear to my eye. Well done!
What are the controls? I couldn't seem to do anything - tried clicking and various keys...
Neat game... I was very confused about which weapon to choose. What are the differences?
I loved the retro graphics, but I found it very hard to read the text! It was hard to know how well I was doing in combat - a little animation or something would help. It's an impressive amount of content though.
Really great game! The first few levels were a great guide, and the slight changes to each level made it very engaging. This could definitely become a marketable game.
Thanks for the feedback CMLSC. I fixed the pixel issue in the post-compo version. pixels.png
Any chance this can be made playable on the web?
I'm really enjoying this! As a fan of Cookie Clicker and Reactor Idle, I found this to be a great combo of clicker + base-building + tower-defense + environmental commentary.
apoc-corp.png
I enjoyed the whack-a-mole gameplay and made it through day 6. Although the crying was annoying, it was perfectly suited to the game, and the variations made it amusing. I had to try overfeeding the baby just to see the cute animation. If overfeeding was more of a risk, the theme would have been higher.
I had a lot of fun with this. I love the simple, decision-based gameplay, and the options to upgrade. :rocket: I think this game will inspire me for a while! There does seem to be a bug though: When i restarted a new game after getting arrested on my first game, the prices were already at the elevated level ($100 rather than $50).
This might be my favorite game so far. I love how each area was introduced incrementally, and had its own charm. Gameplay was engaging and intense - maybe a little too difficult for my tastes - but still a lot of fun.
Very cool graphics (love the low-poly look), but very difficult controls. Sean LeBlanc's comments are spot-on.
necromancer.png
"Hey you guys, stop getting stuck in the doorway and catch up!"
I lived the sounds and the sketched artworked. I would've liked some spooky terrain though ...and maybe something to get skeletons unstuck. :skull:
That game was a perfect fit to the theme and a great simulation of hoarding. Very funny!
Very fun game. It's very much like a few games I've played in the past, which I enjoyed. The connection with the theme was a great idea, but unfortunately I didn't appreciate it too much -- the combat is so fast-paced that I never had time to even check the penalties I was accruing with each planet. In order for those penalties to be more meaningful, the player would need some time to strategize. The fast-paced gameplay was fun though. Only bug seemed to be in the last level I got to -- ships seemed to get stuck in the center of planets.
intergal-misfortune.png
This game increases IQ and is pretty fun to play too. High marks for theme, innovation, and graphics.
Good job ramping up the difficulty. I had trouble with getting 3 bars in the timeframe, but I enjoyed the game. 5 stars for mood!
Great ramp-up of difficulty, fun gameplay, great graphics, and a satisfying explosion sound. This is a great game. The only thing missing is a way to zoom out so I can build even bigger!
rich-in-space.png
I had a very hard time with the wall jumping (but I'm also not a fan of platformers), but the sleeping was an interesting mechanic in the game. The art style and sounds were very professional.
Nice graphics and sound, but I did not grasp the attacking so was dead very quickly.
Cute graphics, and nice, simple gameplay. Would be nice if you could scale the screen up so it was larger.
Great marks for innovation and humor. The artwork was great, and I really like the concept. I think this was very well done. The only things I would change is make it so the lasers only burn buildings if you miss -- otherwise it's not worth trying to shoot criminals that are near a building. Also would be good if the game only ended after a lot more chaos and fire. Feels like a burned one care and I was done.
Sounds like a neat concept but I wasn't sure what to do except keeping hitting "Next day" until I died. (_An allegory of life?_)
That's a pretty good game. I'll echo the same concerns as tthe, and ran into the same bugs as mikomikisomi, but I still had fun with it.
game.png
Did I win yet? The more I have, the better it gets.
I agree with what others have said: the controls feel really nice. Your pixel art is amazing -- the quality of animation with so few pixels and colors is really stunning (I wish you would do a tutorial on this!). I'm easily frustrated with platformers, so didn't make it too far with the jumping, and the enemies killed my instantly -- but I still had a lot of fun running around.
I saved all of existence! Final score 53700. Despite being somewhat simple, this game was one of the most fun ones I've played so far. I liked the creeping space-time blocks, and the map layouts were good at slowly ramping-up the difficulty. Some more variety in enemies would be nice, and some actual benefit for the energy boost would be nice (my energy recharged fast enough that the boost never really helped). Not that it was bad, the main character could benefit from a better running animation since you spend so much time looking at him.
Seems broken in Chrome? :sob:
5 stars for innovation! That is really a creative solution. Now I'd like to see a game jam where the theme is to make a game entirely in one line of text.
I put out a quick-fix (v1.0.1) which fixed a critical memory leak, some typos, and a setting which made it unwinnable. The game can now be beat without crashing your browser. Also there's a post-compo version which features properly-moving merbals, and some graphical enhancements, but no real gameplay changes.
Thanks @agecaf and @jerripo - I added your suggestions to the tips section. I don't expect players to win on their first try. It's definitely a morality tale. :smirk: Increasing happiness isn't necessary to win, but 100% happiness would be a super-win. :trophy:
@t8kk @dimesto52 - You always start with some pollution, so even if you turn off all the coal factories right away, then it will take a while for the pollution to get naturally cleaned up, and the water to stop rising. But unless you have an unusually flat island it should always be winnable.
I really appreciate the spazzy graphics and sounds -- very high marks for mood! But the gameplay was a little too painful for sticking with it for too long.
I beat the Easy level but not sure the other levels are possible. The graphics are really nice, and the gameplay is pretty fun; I just wish there was some variety in tactics, and some sound. This is definitely a game worth continuing with!
Seems more like grape-jelly-blob than tentacles though, no?
I like the music and graphics and concept... but I must be terrible at playing it because I keep knocking down all the posts before I even get started. Is there a way to rotate the wood planks?
Solid game! I especially liked the use of the theme and the sound. The difficulty level was good for me; I ultimately got caught in a room with no way out due to the fire, and got 15425 points.
That is a really enjoyable experience. Simple but captures what it would be like to be stranded in zero gravity. I made it through a few levels, but got stuck on the bend with spikes at the top. I can't quite figure out how to grab the wall. Do I have to be going real slow?
I felt like I was confused, and yet I won... so either I understood or it was too easy. It would be great if the power grid didn't let pieces on that didn't fit, because it's hard to notice that a piece went red in one spot. I also would like to see the 3 ship stats above the power grid because I got confused thinking that the right-side panel was the important one. Neat concept though -- I could see it working well as a mini-game that's part of a larger game.
killhumans.jpg A game where we kill all humans? Sign me up!
But seriously... Interesting concept, really nice graphics and music. But I spent most of the time closing menus that I accidentally opened when trying to ~~kill~~ _click on_ humans. Fullscreen option would be really helpful, as well as some way to see how close to doom you are.
I wanted to love this game based on the premise (farming) and the graphics (amazing :two_hearts: )... but it was just too difficult and too fast. The days whiz by and the plants die quickly, and then there's no way to recover. Some things I would change: make time go by slower; maybe give a timer to show how much time is left in each day; have the seed salesman give away a few basic seeds for free (so that if you screw up with your first few seeds you have another chance to recover).
Doomed: doom.png
Am I punching the blocks Mario-style? What's my goal? Confused... It seems like only a few blocks were pushable.
That was an excellent game! Dare I say one of the top Ludum Dare games I've ever played. I loved the plot and graphics. I enjoyed that it feels somewhat urgent - what with the planet blowing up and all - but still peaceful. I'm very thankful you didn't make it a timed. A few nit-picks: The rotation speed is way too fast; I wish I could get a better view of the pieces of planet flying into space because it was beautiful; I didn't like how the character slides away from people while talking to them.
Graphics and sound were good, and the blob-burning animation was very satisfying. I found the game too hard for my tastes though -- might be more fun if I could open the game full-screen and see farther away and have time to line up my shots.
Once I figured it out, this game was a blast! Buying and selling tetris pieces was a lot of fun. The graphics were perfect -- I just wish I knew what the colors meant. The UI didn't work well at fullscreen and the click/placement was a little off sometimes, but otherwise it seemed very polished. Nice work!
I made it to the 3 giraffes and 5 lions level. That was a lot of fun, really nice sounds and graphics - felt like a professional game.
Like others said, it's not clear what is happening when I click "Buy Small"... Small product? Seems like it takes up space and earns me money after a few seconds, but nothing changes in the graphics to indicate anything. I'm not sure if the Expand button works or if I just need a lot of money?
That was pretty innovative and a great use of the theme. Like others said, it was a bit too fast for me. Would be nice if it started out slower before increasing to that speed. But really well done. Blue screen of death was a nice touch too.
Neat puzzles, and surprisingly nice feeling on the platforming. Unfortunately I made a block push me into another wall when trying to beat a puzzle, and I got stuck there.
Time to pick a new snack! microwave popcorn is obviously too dangerous. How many homes do you have to buy? How many cats must die? :smile_cat: I really like the graphics, especially the main character, and I liked the popcorn sounds. I wish that the popcorn was a little bit slower, and/or I could jump a little higher. I couldn't beat level 3.
 A very unique tale... But as WrenPirate said I wish there were more choices to keep me engaged; needs more interactivity to go along with the fiction.
Beautiful graphics, and a very good use of the theme. I only wish my attacks have a little more weight behind them, and the enemies seemed impacted (beyond their cute faces) so I could tell I was making progress hurting them.
I wish there was a toggle for the music. I like the idea of the game, and think it could be expanded on to be a good game.
From the video you posted your game looks really amazing! I wish it was playable on the web.
Really great balance of different gameplay elements, and great pixel art. I only wish there was some way to carry people around other people to avoid upsetting them because it seems to discourage you from traveling far from the altar.
This fits the theme perfectly, and it definitely had a lot of thought put into the puzzles. Well done!
Really nice graphics, but the platforming controls didn't work well for me. I got stuck in a hole.
Fun game! The graphics were really nice, especially the airborne sheep and the giant rotating mouth. Gameplay was entertaining for a bit, but I assume there's no way to win?
It would be nice if it was more apparent when you are hit; also would be good to distinguish the souls from the main necromancer.
I liked the gun effect and sound, but like Sthor said, it is very difficult. I tried many times but couldn't make it very far. Some tuning the challenge would really help -- maybe making the people a little slower.
Great amount of gameplay in such a short time. Well done! I didn't quite grasp when i was running low on food, or what i was earning each time (weird ui), but everything else was nice.
I couldn't get it to work (only got cthulhu), but I like the theme and concepts.
Dark, evil mood. Pretty standard clicker game. Not bad, but the interface could use some polish as others have said. Would be nice if the body moved a tiny bit when clicked, and maybe got destroyed after away, replaced by a new victim.
A love the idea, the artwork, and the general gameplay (lunar lander), but it's bit too difficult for me. Would be nice if it was more forgiving when hitting walls -- cause damage instead of insta- :skull: .
The concept is really interesting, but I didn't get good with it and ultimately got bored with smashing around. I could see this being fun if it showed what the numbers are that other players got, and also let you see how the best player did it. Then it could become competitive.
Like others have said - this is really ambitious and it's amazing to get a multiplayer game done in a game jam! No one was online so I couldn't do too much, and sadly I couldn't log back in with a character I started... but I would love to play this game more (and possibly contribute if it's open source). A multiplayer space game that's more casual than Eve is what I've been craving for years.
Really nice polish with the UI, sounds, etc. Getting to level 6 with my plant starting to fall over was a bit jarring because it felt like I had to re-learn the game, but I like the concept.
This is a great take on the virtual pet idea! (which I also did) I love how simple each game is, but how frantic the gameplay gets. Really good humor, fun, mood.
I think this game fits the theme well, and I like the 1-bit graphics, but I wasn't able to get far. The first few times I failed while learning what I had to do. Then when I got good at picking up cultists and feeding them to the god (great artwork on that!), new cultists stopped appearing.
I am ordinarily not a big fan of puzzle games yet this game kept me engaged and having a lot of fun! I was actually able to beat all the levels. Graphics and sound all worked really well together. The only things I'd add is an optional grid overlay option, and an explanation that "r" restarts the level.
I have the same views as Saviqq. The pixel art is great, the concept feels original and entertaining (pokemon but for monsters), and I don't mind the grinding. But the combat itself is pretty tiresome; it could use some sounds, some movement, and a clearer indication of what's happening (damage amounts popping above heads maybe).
While I prefer clicker/incremental games without a timer, I think its use here was good to keep the game short and frantic. The leaderboard was interesting, but I have no idea how a human can really get those top scores.
~~Will you release a web build?~~ This looks really interesting.
Thanks for the web build! Unless I'm doing something wrong it seems to be bugged though: During diagnostics when I click on anything, nothing happens.
I added zoom (via mouse scrollwheel) and some bug fixes to the [post-compo version](https://deathraygames.github.io/little-boring-drill/). If you're interested in playing it for fun (not for rating purposes), give that version a try. I love everyone's comments, and am interested in what fixes and new features people would like to see!
I'm a big fan of KSP and creator of [several](http://deathraygames.com/play-online/stardust/) [mini](https://deathraygames.github.io/lunar-lander-13k/src/) [gravity](https://js13kgames.com/entries/404-orbiting-asteroids) [games](https://js13kgames.com/entries/star-hopper-glitch-jump) (that last link is very similar to yours in gameplay!)... so of course I really enjoyed this. It's definitely the kind of game I've wanted to make. Graphics and music perfectly compliment the game. I only wish there was a zoom feature, and a slower version so I could be more meticulous with my engine thrusts.
Very nice game! Very relaxing gameplay to start, increasing danger, and scientific non-violent goals.
I wouldn't mind a way to go deeper faster, or stop descending for a moment. And like you said in your post, the snake creatures are too dangerous and hard to scan. I died immediately.
What I wonder is: What's the plan to retrieve our intrepid explorer? I kind of felt like maybe she/he was being sent on a death sentence. If you continue with the game, maybe they send down a cable to pull you back at certain checkpoints, and then you can use the science you gathered to get upgrades.
My first reaction: "What am I?" After the first puzzle: "Oh, neat". After the 2nd: "Ooh!" 3rd: "Cool!" Very nice game - incredibly innovating idea which I enjoyed more and more after each puzzle. I also really liked the polished low-poly graphics and lighting. I did get stuck in the room with the rotating platform though, and the mouse sensitivity is really painful.
TIL that ants can't swim. I had fun, and I know this is the kind of game I could get addicted to but I have no idea what the goal means. How much water? how deep?
High marks for music, and nice art; love the hair movement and the bug-eating... but I couldn't beat a single level. Do you just have to restart the level until you get a random level that is beatable? Can you dig down somehow?
Good mood and great graphics. The gameplay was confusing because there was no feedback that the enemy was attacking or the cards were doing anything unless I looked very carefully at the numbers. Also the bubble number never seems to go down. It has potential if you continue with it.
That was very amusing and silly. The moth came out on it's own, Then I went to rate it... Very innovative, graphics - they were good too, audio was really nice, very funny humor, excellent mood. Wow!
Thanks for everyone who played! I appreciate all the comments.
The early cane is due to me not spacing out the years too well when I was making the artwork. It's funny how many people noticed that.
Regarding comments from Ninja, Jeffrey, and fitz -- I considered adding the ability to select from a few different options at each stage of life, but I wanted to keep it super simple because I had limited time over the weekend. I agree it would've been a nice touch to add the illusion of choice, however the ultimate outcome would stay the same: time marches on.
