Minimalism by Mathias Olsson 2013-05-01T08:01:00
Cool idea. More universes to create would have been nice. I like the sound when hitting 'the end of the universe'.

Thanks for the feedback :).
The waiting was pretty much inspired by the XKCD comic #1190 (Time). But you are probably right, too much waiting for a game.
@Tyro: That's a great idea. switching to another game after losing all balls. I should have implemented it that way.
@arrogant.gamer
Good suggestion, I've added GA to the page.
World-wide leader board would take a while. It's all client side at the moment so it would be easy to cheat by submitting fake scores.
I was planning to add more games but ran out of time. But more games can be added and I probably will once the judging has ended.
Haven't even heard about VESPER5 until now, but that game is much more extreme about waiting :)
@cahman
smoother transitions is something I wanted to do and might add later
Oh, I just discovered I have a bug in the breakout game. The blocks were supposed to return once every block was destroyed.
Also, in case no one has realized: Every 250 points the amount of balls increases. (In the pong-like games only after you lost all your balls)
Fighting the boss took me longer than playing the rest of the game.. and in the end I was down to 2 of those cute goblin babies and then I got stuck in a corner and died a horrible death. Damn you Goblin King!! I saw him coming but couldn't get away.
Nice game though :). I also liked the recharging mechanics and didn't mind the fireball being shot from the head.
I'm not sure if I won or lost in the end (I exploded and spread my circles), but nice game anyway. Eating sparkling things until I can eat my enemies(?) and them getting smaller. But I don't know what I was supposed to click. When I clicked on myself I could select my shape and the game would start again from the beginning.
Same here. Window stuck in the top left and when I press space the game freezes and this exception is thrown:

And it's right, there is no net.au file anywhere in the jar or on my system. Should it be included in the jar?
Didn't see you already uploaded a fixed version. Works fine now.
Wow, great game and the monsters are really scary.
I went the wrong direction the first time and then got stuck in the room with the 2 turrets. Second time I went to get the minimalizer first :).
The freeze is fixed now. Slipped past me somehow :(
@all: Thanks for your comments and especially for liking the drawings mode :)
@those where the game runs slow or the ship oscillates: seems like my game has some performance issues. Pretty weird because there isn't even much going on...
Yes, there is no dying at the moment. But with all this feedback I may start doing a post compo version of the game.
@Nick Weihs: Yeah, it's kind of influenced by Evoland and also Upgrade Complete.
Nice concept and fun. The time limit really makes this game possibly.
But sometimes I get this Exception:
I should heal or wait
Exception in thread "LWJGL Application" java.lang.IndexOutOfBoundsException: In

I've had a look at the source code and the bug is in AI.pickSpell. It happens if the AI doesn't have enough MP for a heal spell but enough for an attack spell.
Then it goes beyond this check
if (dmg.isEmpty() && heal.isEmpty()) return null;
tries to iterate the heal-spells, finds none, tries to access index 0 of the empty list and crashes.
Black holes have consumed every star and every planet. Except for all the stars sparkling in the background :). Love your art style and humor.
Ol' Granny likes to take the shortest path to the exit (the place without a wall), but if she sees some food around a corner, she might just go there instead. Just avoid running into fairies cause they will take her only tooth.
And sometimes, she just is the old granny with her last tooth and behaves rather unpredictable. But that's the way old grannys with only one tooth left behave like. Trust me :). (Or rather, I am abusing a pathfinding algorithm to do things it was not supposed to do *g*).
Glad you enjoy the game :).
Thanks for the feedback so far. I've added some instructions in the description above and will do a post compo version after Christmas.
Minor nitpick: A trading year only has ~252 days. And some kind of Thread.sleep() in your game loop could be useful to prevent it from freezing computers.
Sad game with fitting music. Very good. On my first try everyone died but second time everyone survived. Nice story too.
Thanks Notch. I've been doing games in Dart for a little bit more than a year and I felt quite lonely with a maximum of only one or two other people creating games in Dart. Thanks to your stream and this game it'll probably be different at the next Ludum Dare.
Also thanks for your stream. Seeing that you still kept coding when I wanted to sleep made me stay up and keep coding too. Thanks to that I was able to finally finish a game in this LD.
Last but not least, this game encourages me to take a dive into WebGL :).
This worm is so extremely fast, never knew they race like that :). The 4th level (I think it was the 4th, the first one without walls) is so damn hard, died so often and never even saw the goal. Cool game nonetheless.
There needs to be a category for storytelling or something :). Even played twice to see different dialog and endings.
Great soundtrack :)
I get this error in Firefox TypeError: z.createGainNode is not a function
Great feeling when I finally got the Iron pickaxe after missing so many blocks of ruby. Good ending too :).
Nice use of Dart. Addicting game :).
Thanks for the feedback. You are right, it can take a while until more heroes enter the castle. I'm going to do a post compo version and will change this.
But image how repetitive the work is, when all castle engineers are at work. Every one, just standing in front of his or her own button. Waiting for the light to go off, just to press the button again. Just to wait again... Those poor bastards.
Yes, every sound in this game is "mouth made" :D
Nice simulation. But it was soooo sad when Uuxiu, the only child of Xikou died a lonely death, not leaving any other red creature behind. The same goes for Vivii, she never even had a parent of the same color and was always excluded from everything :(.
At one point I had 5 different colors at the same time, with white coming back. https://imgur.com/cvL28h8
A very unique experience... I think I destroyed everything. But I don't know why^^.
I was all good and fun, until one worm decided it's mating time and didn't leave my side.
I'm also reminded of Supaplex.
Simple style, yet good looking.
Liked the weird mix of English and broken German. It werfs flammen :)
Got to keep level 36, it's getting pretty fast paced at that point.
Interesting idea. Controls are a bit strange especially having to reselect the ants after digging. And at one point I wasn't able to make my ants move upwards :(.
Interestingly, yours is the second Dart game that's broken in Firefox because of the same error. Also, please check out my Dart game :).
Nice, another game in Dart. And even without using any library.
Got to 518. Started with 2 drills, but lost one of them..
Interesting experience. Textual description of what you do triggers quite some different feelings than just shooting a bunch of people in a FPS.
Addictive and fun. Would like to have more time to wreak more havoc :).
It probably wasn't supposed to be that way, but I found the death sound funny :). Had to chuckle a few times.
Nice idea and game, but even in Dartium it started lagging after a while (got to level 4). Would have been nice if it was a bit more fast paced.
Nice game, was able to win on second try. The last two waves are stressful.
An effect when hitting a ant with a shoot would have been nice. At first I thought there is a bug that made my shoots disappear until I realized some ants just take a bit longer to kill.
Had to laugh at the end!
How did StageXL feel? All my games so far are in Dart, but never used StageXL because I've got my own little thingy.
One thing is for sure, your shark looks a lot better than the last shark I tried to draw :). Liked the wave-effect.
Had to try it until I won. Maximum distance of 3173. Nice game and interesting mechanics.
Liked the game. Even a similar idea as in my game, except it's the exact opposite (does this even makes sense?).
Was a bit buggy for me. Mr. Fluffy sometimes disappeared and sometimes ended up on the left side of the screen, which made it quite hard to get those kitten pics to their recipients.
Great game. Liked the different variations of the gun, almost like a nuke in the end. And Dave lived until 2090.
A bit dark in the beginning and at first I was irritated when the upgrade screen popped up. Thought it was getting darker because I got deeper. Took me a while to realize it's getting darker because my energy is running low.
Felt nice in the end to cut through the walls like a warm knife through butter. I also liked those big bombs.
Great music. The graphics reminded me of a game I played many years ago, EVO or something. One of the fish-creatures you control looked just like that.
The kind of game where you can spend a lot of time.... grew all plants.
I've opened some issues on my github repo for a post compo version. So thanks for the feedback so far :).
On my first try I lost because my crew of four was taken over by brainslugs. In the following games I never let any crew with a brainslug back on board.
Then I read the comments and finished my last game with 13 brainslugs on board. Cool game :)
My first game was over pretty fast, losing two civs but the third quickly took over the enemy civ. Had to take over the whole galaxy on my second try, with new civs spawning several times.
Then I realized I can zoom in, lot's of detail. Loved it :).
Really felt a bit like Gunstar Heroes with all those popcorn units exploding everywhere :).
A touching story and perfectly fitting music and art. Loved it.
Played on Web and on Windows. Could only close the debriefing screen on my third try. After waiting a while I suddenly was able to click the close button. But then died instantly on the next mission :(. Thought I selected 6 guys for the mission, but apparently it was zero. Couldn't get beyond the debriefing screen afterwards (the close button doesn't get highlighted when moving over it with the cursor)...
Nice game with the same basic idea as my game (connecting heaven and hell). But yours is more polished and actually has more than one type of unit :).
Very cool game. Had to try again and again but my best score still was a bit short of 5000. A bit more time would have been nice. Maybe as some kind of collectible?
So many different games. Nice work.
Built a few things (I think everything that was possible, at least I didn't see any more items) the best thing being a shelter right above a campfire. The fire turned bright white and there was dark smoke everywhere. Good smoke physics :).
Nice interpretation of the theme. I was surprised that I got so far (level 9) and always found the monster withing a very short time. Sadly the game did hang on level 10, when I (probably) selected the wrong person. The cage didn't not fall down and the music kept playing even after I closed the game (had to kill the java process).
Still, very good game.
A game that's simple, yet hard. Nice job.
A bit short with only one level :(. But could have some potential if there was a visualization of the parents sight (at least for easy difficulty) and levels with hiding spots for the clinging-to-the-wall mechanics.
The parents move pretty fast and it was a fast game over for me on my first try. I just started reading the first sentence "Avoid the parents sight." and then I was in the menu again. Either the parent is moving too far to the left, too fast or the text is too late or all of the above.
The same happened in the room with the children. Didn't expect to be able to lose to a child and wanted to read the text first :).
Very nice game. But how's the poor child supposed to sleep with such a funky party going on downstairs?! (some kind of party sound in that level would have been great)
Fun game. Succeeded in taking the citadel in the last level but one of my guys got stuck.. so I didn't really finish :(.
Found your game through your PostMortem on reddit. You should link to it here too, it's an interesting read. I've never heard of Overlap2D but it has some nice features.
Nice game. I had a similar idea for LD29. Just with a completely different mechanic and genre :D. The physics are funny with knights suddenly turning like crazy. The music was well fitting too.
Fantastic job. I died quite a few times in the last few levels, but it was worth it. Grappling hooks are awesome.
@gkxd: I changed how the controls are displayed in the post compo version, should be more visible now
@Tuism: the buttons are the base buttons for the 10 finger system, so you can control both thrusters with your index fingers in a way you naturally use your keyboard. If you used only one hand, I can understand your problems. Maybe I'll add AD and/or cursor controls or configurable keys in the post compo. I'm sorry that it was a frustrating experience for you. It should have been a chill and soothing experience. Once you grow really big, fill the screen and spin a bit it's kind of hypnotizing.
@YinYin: Actually I had planned for a zoom out and it'll happen in the post compo.
@everyone who had problems with the controls: I'll add the option to invert the controls in the post compo version. I'll also add an easy mode with the option to enable some kind of friction, making it easier to stop rotating
@everyone who would like some chill ambient background music: something like that will be added in the post compo version
@everyone: Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated and I'll see what else I can add to the post compo version.
Some counters would be nice, to know when to collect resources or when attacking is possible again.
Already liked your slimilization and this one is good too. Maybe give the slimes of the different players different colors. Was a bit hard to see which ones are my slimes when they were fighting.
Wow, great take on the theme. Didn't expect that. Need to play this game more often to improve on all those skills required to beat this beast!
Beautiful and perfect.
The controls felt natural, I didn't have any problems with them.
The only critic I have, is that the game ends when I collected all orbs. Had to play the game several times to enjoy it even more :). Very soothing.
Very nice game. Played it several times. Survived for 154 seconds in my last game. The post compo version has some nice additions.
I really liked the way the objects popped up and I was sad when the game ended :(. Got to play again!
A very fun and fast paced game. Got my heart pumping when I finally went beyond a score of 200. Ended up at 285. Quite polished.
Can't play it :(
Bandwidth Limit Exceeded

Wow awesome game and quite a lot of content for 48h hours. Survived for 443 days and beat the dragon, but no farmers left.. I guess my village is doomed. Needs a sequel :).
Great game. At first I was like: What the hell am I supposed to do, then I read the instructions :). Won on easy after 12 turns and then tried hard. Got beaten in the first round twice. Then I won after 8 rounds.
As others were saying, could need some visual feedback if something can not be done. Like moving a node to close to another one (e.g. turn the circle around the moved node to red). Happened quite few times that I thought there was enough space but I still was too close.
Nice take on the theme and introducing something new to TD games. But needs a different kind of balancing, as it gets to easy. Also, wave 9 of the second level is kind of strange. A few weak enemies that get easily defeated when they enter the map and have a lot of time between them.
Nice, another game with impulse controls :). People don't really like the controls in my game either, and I'm not even controlling the direction but the thrusters. So your controls were quite easy :).
Sadly, no theme in there :(.
Also, I'm not sure if your use of _fixed_process is okay. I haven't done anything in Godot, but giving me more than 200 FPS (having a 60Hz monitor) and my cpu and cpu fan going all out doesn't seem right.
Interesting game. But quite hard. Funny positive and negative descriptions of the items.
Thanks @ everyone for the feedback and the ideas your feedback is giving me :).
@blubberquark Yep, that's to be expected. I'm using requestAnimationFrame for everything, so if the browser doesn't need to render anything, no logic at all is getting executed. You can't even get killed while tabbed away. Don't tell anyone ;). But once you tab back, a lot of arrows are going to hit you. My main goal with this game was, to get an idea about how to get multiple clients play the same game. Next time I do something like this I'll make it more robust.
I'm also proud about the 2 users (or maybe one) who cheated. My game was worth the effort to do some cheating (faking position and shooting arrows from multiple locations), yay :).
Quite the unique game :). Wasn't so sure about whether I had to collect those orbs (or whatever they were) or not, but either way was fine.
Awesome! Tried to create a similar game, with resources and crafting but didn't finish. In the end, it took me quite some time to realize, that the two green resources for building a satellite where different materials. I thought there was some bug that prevented satellites from being built, but after reading the comments and no one having this problem, I looked more closely and finally realized I need circuits too 🤦.
Nice game. In my first play-through I didn't have enough people in my main city and was below 30k when my people started starving. Second time I tried a more intelligent approach and tried to keep the people count in the main city at 1.000 to optimize mining there and only shipped off people to other island if I got above 1.000. Also kept the population of every city at max 50 to minimize food consumption. Once the other islands started starving I moved excess people there and left them there to starve... My economy could have even remain stable till 50k. I had enough food stocked up.
I don't think there is a way to win without having people starve. But that fits the name of the game perfectly. Exploit nature and exploit your own people.
This game really put my non existent sense of orientation to a challenge. But I was still able to finish it. Bit I discovered the name of the map faaaar too late in the game.
Interesting physics. Took some time to understand them (until the level with the arrows), but in hindsight it's pretty obvious. At the end, I was able to get to the final planet without touching any planet in between :D.
Maybe sometime later @shodanon, but not in the near future.
A game well done. The first few tries I was happy if I succeeded to get to level 3 and in the end I was just running and jumping all the time. Must have been 9 or 10 astronauts at that time. Fun little game :). Would have been nice to have a level/astronaut number somewhere because I couldn't count them fast enough anymore. It was an invasion!
Impressive amount of content; all those graphics and even a lot of explanatory text in the beginning. Innovative type of game, visually pleasing and quite fun too.
Cool game. The first level was the hardest. Took me some time to get a feeling for the slingshot mechanics. Afterwards, I was able to complete the levels on the second or third try.
I liked the game. Takes some time to finish it, but I've still played it several times. It does have a good replay value. Wanted to get more oxygen but the best I could accomplish was 11% with trees at every free space. Guess I have to try more often :D.
Really nice how much content you were able to put into this game with disasters and planet changing mechanics.
It's a fun game. At first I had more than 100 seconds time but after several tries I got to 8 seconds without any kills (probably abusing the way the people spawn). I always moved the foot to the upper right corner, when most of the shoe is off-screen and there is no person spawned yet/or they move away). But crushing them is fun too :D.
It would be nice to see how much population I have or how much food is consumed per turn. And I ran into a bug, but cannot reproduce it: My people were starving and somehow I suddenly had -1 Action Points and I could just go crazy and do whatever I wanted as long as I had the resources. No more "not enough action points" and I went down to less than -100 ;).
Thanks for all the comments :)
@ditzel I didn't have time to add scrolling by dragging, but scrolling using the keyboard isn't that unusual (cursor keys are possible too, if it's just WASD that's weird)
@WongKongPhooey Yeah, a lot of time went into tweaking the parameters so that there isn't a type of terrain that is overpowered and removes all other terrain.
@bcvery1 Sadly adding a colorblind mode in just 48 hours is kinda hard :(, the terrain tiles aren't even sprites so adding a symbol would have been quite a bit of extra effort for which I didn't have the time - considering my placeholder graphics ;)
@Aterlamia playing with fire is always fun :). Don't try this at home!
@Sophie you were just afraid that her royal highness might be in one of the cities ;)
@Distrait and @morphine maybe that's why it's 2 incompatible genres - in the beginning you have to click to get some FAITH and in the end you have click because you just want to watch. Concerning the FAITH-meter, at the beginning you have 1001 FAITH, but afterwards you can only get up to 1000, so you only have one shot at creating humans. After all, they evolve, and another group of newly created humans just wouldn't fit into society and would turn into outcasts who would never be happy and someday might be put onto a cross for doing stupid stuff like walking on water. And as a benevolent God you wouldn't want it to come to that, now would you?
@James-Dunlap use a flood to douse the flames. Concerning the settler: it would be too boring if they just found a place to settle. If they choose to take a swim but cannot swim it's their free will to do so. Who am I to tell them not to? God?
Seriously a very time consuming game. I don't know how long I've spent in game, but I am in wave 71 with a score of 771 and still going strong - I really need to stop :D. Restore backup is a life saver all the time :). Great game, great combination of themes!
Can you bundle the libhl.dll? I can't run the game because it is missing :(
see `https://github.com/HaxeFoundation/hashlink/wiki/Distribution-&--Packaging` (not clickable because the & messes up the url)
Thanks :). I did play it now and finished it with 67 shots. The level in the screenshot felt like the hardest one. Altogether it was quite hard and sometimes even frustrating but good enough to keep me playing :). Good work!
Best Audio track so far! Reminded me of the beginning of Phantasy Star 4. Gives the perfect vibe to the dangerous rise of lava. Finished the game with only eleven coins and more than 60 deaths... will have to try again later.
Took me some time to realize I have to plant something first, otherwise the water button wouldn't do anything.
Also, I can't seem to pickup the items I dropped. And the plants suddenly disappeared. I don't know if they were full grown or not. I got them watered 5 or 6 times when they suddenly were gone.
10 words, 70 kills. That was more exhausting than I thought it would be. It's really hard to try to find words while at the same time having to stay alive. Nice combination of genres and really fun (I prefer the controls of the post compo version).
Great game, feels finished and nicely polished and has the right speed.
At first I thought I wouldn't be able to get up, once I was on the ground, tried double jumping and wall jumping to no avail but then I discovered the awesomeness of dash-jumping :).
Won the game, but hit a bug in my first play. When I upgraded the tent for the first time, I was suddenly inside the tent (maybe to close while upgrading) and then I was switched to FPS mode and fell through the map.
@gemberkoekje you have to move away from the camp to switch to FPS mode.
Wow, great story, a lot to read and multiple endings. Great combination of genres. Game ended with a wife and a score of 15402.
A small spelling mistake: you wrote "would be theif" instead of thief ;).
