LD38 — A Small World

Beetle Archaeologist by Kalkatos 2017-05-02T08:33:33Z

Nice! I found some lost treasures (a cookie, a penny, and an earring). I was playing on a web browser and click and dragging the mouse wasn't great, but I bet this would play great on mobile with touch controls. The graphics were nice,I like this style. Nice polished entry, all it needs is a little jaunty bgm to be a complete game. Well done.

PS: Oh, I was also surprised that hitting spacebar reset my map. I think I was expecting it to dig or something, but instead it made my target go right out from under me.

Dot by euske 2017-05-01T18:07:34Z

Fun old school feel and gameplay! I hate that real estate tycoon and also the kamikaze food truck enemies that expect me to pay for their car even though they crashed into me while I parked. Loved the ending animation.

Little Asteroid by Wevel 2017-05-03T04:37:46Z

Nice resource game! I got caught up trying to figure out how some of the routing work and couldn't get selling to work to the space port. It would get to connecting the refinery to the space port, then ask me to sell a recipe. I'd select 'Sell Copper'Ore' and then I couldn't get past that 'Sell an item to continue' part. What did I do wrong?

Where is mommy? by jQnas 2017-05-01T03:41:27Z

Pretty creepy! I thought it was a little dark on my monitor, so might have been good to have a little adjustment. I couldn't figure out how to light the second candle, but definitely has a good atmosphere, sound, and graphics.

The Hungry Planet by madalaski 2017-05-02T22:06:55Z

Pretty fun - I like the zoom effects. I didn't play through the entire thing, but it was hard to get a sense of scale without a reference point, so I didn't always get a sense that my little planet was growing. There were a few times where I feel like I got out into the bad neighborhoods of outer space because there were no bodies to absorb for a while and I was just clicking around aimlessly. I think with a more visual indicator of scale, I'd get more excited.

This is a total tangent but.. Have you ever seen this anime called Gurren Lagan? Toward the end of the series they keep getting bigger and bigger robots and eventually ones that are galaxy sized - they do a really good job of conveying that scale as they zoom out past planets, which become smaller, then solar systems, and then entire galaxies etc. I think that's something like I'd imagine for this game - maybe starting out in the orbit of some background moon and then seeing it shrink. I did see you have an Earth-like planet in the screens but I wasn't able to encounter it.

Anyway, well done on this entry!

Cathode Way by garethiw 2017-05-03T19:03:59Z

Amazing idea! My inner backstory is something about being stranded on an island where video game systems go when they die. Great graphics sound and concept. A+.

Insect Attack by SimplePotential 2017-05-02T04:27:42Z

"I'm sure there are more than a few bugs." - funny! I couldn't get this to work as I have a mac and cmd-click didn't accurately simulate a right click. This is a pretty decent effort for just 6 hours! Reminds me of the fly swatting game in Mario paint a little.

The Button Room by Laylow 2017-05-02T04:10:22Z

This was definitely interesting! I'm not sure what happened at the end, but I think that I made button happy again? Would love to know more about the mystery and the thought process that went into this.

Supermarket Sneak by Rick 2017-05-03T18:50:32Z

Fun idea! The struggle for Thanksgiving shopping is real.

Bunosphere by torcado 2017-05-01T23:50:47Z

Super cool! Great graphics and I had fun playing. This is one of my favorites so far. I wish I had better directional sense.

The Cookie Knight by aaranos 2017-05-03T18:53:28Z

Cute little platformer. I think the timing on the spacebar is a bit sensitive - it double jumps often when I don't intend to if I hold it for too long.

Slice of Life by tweedle 2017-05-02T04:14:42Z

I couldn't figure out quite how this worked and the game was a bit high resolution for my screen. Though I deployed mushrooms and stuff, the mushroom house always exploded and covered everything with green spores. However, I give marks to graphics and theme because it's a game about pizza. Cheers!

Attack of the Planetary-Vampires by Rolle 2017-05-01T20:02:53Z

Nice old school shooter that feels a little bit of 8bit Satans Hollow meets Sega Genesis graphics! Fun to play and well executed.

Naarrow by Ace17 2017-05-01T18:16:54Z

Pretty fun metroidvania stickfigure game! Same as above, I almost stopped playing because I thought it was one repeating level. Glad I stuck around and got some of the power ups.

Slimes in Panic by KayZ 2017-05-01T19:40:04Z

I'm not much of a resource game person, but this seems like a great start! The mechanics are solid. If you decide to continue this game, a little bit of tutorial mode stuff in the beginning would help a lot. PS: I love hexagon tiles and slimes!

Little Fortune Planet by Flaterectomy 2017-05-03T19:12:37Z

Great looking entry! I'm totally lost about how to play it, but it's fun clicking around and seeing bad things happen. I guess that's the point? Great entry!

Space Migrator by jackyjjc 2017-05-03T18:57:51Z

I like the use of the theme in the story and the phrase "But wait, this planet if very small" stuck in my head like a catch phrase. Glad you added endless mode as the main goal is pretty easy. Well done!

Pixel Town by automatonvx 2017-05-01T20:24:31Z

Seems really nice and complete, and the graphics and audio are very nice! Laying out the roads was a bit tricky to figure out as the visual indicator on the cursor didn't update for the context of the direction the road was going to face. Totally realize the time constraints. Great job on this!

Fixville by vladik-plays 2017-05-01T20:33:02Z

Heads up that this game might not play correctly if you have an ad blocker. Nice premise and story! The gameplay could be a little bit smoother. I hope you continue working on this as it looks like it could be a lot of fun with a bit more polish!

BAD RNG by internetpaulicy 2017-05-01T23:54:17Z

Nice! I love reimagining the classics. I liked the touch that you are playing on an arcade cabinet but the spiders in the game are actual spiders from outside the game. Really polished graphics and fun variation on the game play.

LOST PLANET(oid) by mrnyarlathotep 2017-05-03T18:43:49Z

Pretty cool! Reminds me a bit of Commander Keen. I wasn't expecting monsters to follow me across screens. I also think the shoot timing is a little off - that is, sometimes you hit spacebar and it doesn't shoot, so you need to hold it to make sure it's read. I likes seeing the literal edge of the world too. Nicely done!

What Remains. by Fiote 2017-05-02T16:10:32Z

Cool game! Could use a few tooltips over the icons as I forget what they are sometimes. I like the graphics and style and enjoy the funny voices. :)

World of Echoes by multiplexor 2017-05-01T19:58:30Z

Pretty fun! A little bit slow to start and I really wanted to be able to move while the text bubbles are going instead of freezing Some fun puzzles here!

Space Cowboy's Last Stand by jasperarmstrong 2017-05-02T04:19:58Z

This was fun! The difficulty was a little but unforgiving for me - I wish I had a few more bullets to start out with to ease into the learning curve. The controls are nice and smooth. I like the art and all around feel of the game. Well done!

Small World of Mushrooms by lekaleksay 2017-05-01T17:17:00Z

Definitely some instructions would help here as I couldn't figure out what to do. If you can add a brief howto to the description here, I'll be sure to come back and rate your game properly!

The Core by ectucker1 2017-05-03T04:41:53Z

Fun puzzle game! Minor annoyance was that I wish the 'Reset' didn't reset everything but let me move the pieces around again and retry without having to place all my pieces again.

Ant Runner by unit684 2017-05-02T21:49:00Z

Pretty cool! I like the graphics. I wasn't expecting that the ant would auto-aim for me, so it was confusion to start, but nice when I got used to it. I managed to get pretty far (I think) but a hidden pool of water took me out instadeath style when I didn't realize I needed to jump. If you go further with this one, adding some periodic checkpoints to continue from might make the sad reality of instadeath a little easier to deal with. Well done!

It's a Small World by NedMakesGames 2017-05-03T05:13:56Z

Fun! I like the simple jump mechanic and cute graphics. All the jump combos made me feel almost like I was playing a street fighter game. Good controls!

Water Bear World by Aviland 2017-05-01T19:51:09Z

The controls are really tricky, but I love the concept and graphics! I'm not sure how to turn or get the waterbear to go where I want to to despite trying different variations and timings of WASD. Sometimes he turns, but what caused it? With a little bit of control refinement, this could be really fun.

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-05-01T17:27:03Z

Fanciful and cute! Good writing and nice mood and soundscape. This was very well done! I'll come back and play this one again.

A Giant Hitch by GenericToast 2017-05-01T17:58:59Z

Unique and fun series of mini games. Great story telling and direction with pretty simple graphics. The controls are a bit funny, maybe because of the squareness of the character? For example, the momentum it takes to get going, and not being able to jump consistently while the character is rolling (I guess because they are not grounded at the instant I hit it?) These do not really affect gameplay, but if any more reflex based scenes were come up later, they might good to address. Loved it!

Starbob by Gato 2017-05-03T05:09:08Z

Pretty cool! I managed to build a pretty big tower that was fairly unstable and toppled over. After that I kind of felt "We can rebuild it, we have the technology".. so out of curiosity I tried again. I realize that I can turbo-boost sort of by jumping and putting boxes under me and then jumping again, but I ran out of pieces. Finally, I collected blocks all around the planet and I *think* I escaped. Currently zooming through space.

Nice that the feeling of curiosity was strong enough to get off the planet! Some of the mechanics were a bit tedious, but with a little smoothing this will get more fun. Nice job!

Eine Kleine Insektmusik by davidthelazar 2017-05-01T17:45:05Z

Cool idea! At first I was worried that my tone deafness would be a hurdle here, but I noticed the vibrating hammers as a warning. Then as mentioned above I noticed you could find safe spots that weren't used much. I guess some sort of penalty for not moving would help. Still, love the concept! I hope you find some inspiration to work on it after the compo too.

Snail Fighter by Marccio Silva 2017-05-02T21:11:54Z

Pretty fun! The bullet wrap is interesting. It took me a minute to figure out what was going on, but the end result that I am more cautious with my shots. It's also nice to spam an area then get out of there so you can concentrate on the non-bullet ridden area while your residual bullet shower takes some enemies down. I could see some interesting strategies evolving around this mechanic alone. I like the graphics and the gameboy-esque palette. I would have liked some horizontal movement, but it was a good time either way!

ZEUS VS MOLES by Fouralex 2017-05-02T22:11:00Z

Super cute voxel graphics and a funny premise. Controlling with the mouse was a little bit hard, but it would probably be great on a phone with touch controls. Who would have thought that a god would have so much trouble with a rodent invasion! Good job on this!

RGB by madmaw 2017-05-02T04:23:32Z

What a great idea for a puzzle game! I get the concept, but there were a few times where I got Victory, but didn't know why. :D Maybe I'm just bad at color theory and lucky.

Barely There by benbennett 2017-05-01T23:40:44Z

Cute! I had to laugh at the little bee tongue (proboscis?) licking the flower.

Barely There by benbennett 2017-05-01T23:43:49Z

Wow, I'm glad I stuck around around for the ending!

Potions recipes by dick-claus 2017-05-02T22:31:58Z

Good start on a game engine! It could use a little bit more of a challenge component - something like enemies, or puzzles, or hiding the items with clues a bit. I hope you keep going after the compo.

SORLD by Fiery Squirrel 2017-05-03T04:46:31Z

Cute game with a lot of things going on. I watched the YouTube demo video, but still wasn't clear on when / why I needed to pick up building or why I needed to put them down. I had fun shooting at the UFO's anyway though!

My Very Own World by SpaceSparkle 2017-05-02T16:22:52Z

Not my best genre, but I played it a bit to give it a go. I can see it's well made and the graphics are nice and it looks like it has quite a bit of polish. I like the scrolling mechanic. Quite a bit of work must have gone into the rules engine. Well done!

Island Attack by turbo 2017-05-01T20:20:08Z

Fun! This reminds me of an old CGA game I used to play called Sopwith. There are a lot more missiles and bullets to deal with in this one though!

NO STEP ON HYOOMINS by makenai 2017-05-01T17:05:15Z

@faithcaio - it's pretty random sometimes and you can get a good streak. My record is about 22 seconds with no casualties. I meant to add some better AI to make humans scatter, but didn't quite get there this time.

NO STEP ON HYOOMINS by makenai 2017-05-01T22:09:23Z

@silkworm-sweatshop That is a great score!

NO STEP ON HYOOMINS by makenai 2017-05-02T15:35:22Z

@unidaystudio Thank you very much!

NO STEP ON HYOOMINS by makenai 2017-05-03T00:50:43Z

@kodiqi Nice score! I originally had a high score table planned. I wish I had gotten that done in time!

NO STEP ON HYOOMINS by makenai 2017-05-03T18:09:24Z

@unit684 One of the original ideas was to have little things like fires that would be happening and you'd get points for stomping them out and keeping them from spreading.

NO STEP ON HYOOMINS by makenai 2017-05-04T20:00:53Z

@wevel Ooh, it might bounce back a little too much. It was an intentional feature to keep people from just stepping on their own feet to get off easily - ie, it simulates a stumble and uncontrolled landing. It could definitely be either messaged or fine tuned better though! Thank you for playing!

NO STEP ON HYOOMINS by makenai 2017-05-07T23:41:12Z

@inventroom Thanks for the review!

Primordial Ooze by primitive-concept 2017-05-02T22:23:44Z

Cool concept and the graphics and mood are great! I think this is one of the more visually polished games I have seen. It's a little hard to tell what's going on as we zoom through different scales and sometimes it's hard for me to tell what's killed me. I got hit a few times, but didn't die except for when I do. Is there an energy bar somewhere? Nice job on this game - totally felt like I was looking though a microscope.

SMALL WORLD of LOVER by appix 2017-05-01T20:26:37Z

Love is kind of hard and unforgiving! My relationship ended with a single mistake. Very cute graphics and music, and an interesting idea! Nice job. :D

herbarium by t-mw 2017-05-01T19:46:02Z

Great aesthetic and nice level design! I like that it's possible to overwater a plant and kill it. Nice puzzle game.

New God in the Town by erdiizgi 2017-05-02T22:34:14Z

Interesting concept! Kind of like being Air Traffic controller for human interactions.

Agoraphobia by Kodiqi 2017-05-02T21:22:38Z

This was a simple game with a great concept. I had to remember the definition of Agoraphobia to figure out why I kept dying. I love this interpretation of 'small world'. It's always interesting when we can take away some empathy for certain aspects of a mental illness from a medium like video games. Well done!
