LD38 — A Small World

El Escubo's Key Quest by jellonator00 2017-05-16T04:44:35Z

Woah, I love the calm atmosphere of the game!

rovR by morrilet 2017-05-01T09:00:10Z

Wow, the way you navigate around the levels is pretty unique and interesting, but can be pretty punishing if you get far and accidentally miss a target planet. Maybe a trajectory line of sorts would help? But it's pretty satisfying that the puzzles seem to have multiple solutions. It makes the player think and experiment, which I like. I loved slingshotting my way around the planets to get to the destinations, haha.

The art's pretty funny too. You just now that this is a face that's been through a lot: rovR_v1.0.1_2017-05-01_10-47-45.png

Like I said, my only criticism is that the game seems to recommend experimentation to solve the puzzles, but sometimes doing so can be pretty punishing once you're far in a level. Many tears were shed through hardship on the final level... so maybe there could be some kind of aid like trajectory lines. Maybe even quicksaving and loading?

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-04-26T14:01:56Z

@jusw85 Fixed that, and thanks!

@HugoBDesigner <3

@Veralos Thanks for the constructive criticism! I blame Qora's rather weird running animation on the time constraint, hah. Fixed both glitches.

@FyreDemon405 ... I saw this comment before uploading v1.1, but forgot to fix that. Oh well, until v1.2 that's just something people can use to their advantage :P

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-04-28T13:01:45Z

@GEWDA Kinda. The two different endings are the one you reach on Qora's planet and the one you reach on Exupery's planet. There are two variations of the one on Qora's planet and three on Exupery's - although the differences between each are rather small.

@nicolas-shapland Thanks!

@davikin92 I didn't really put that much thought into the theme of the story/gameplay, but I really like that interpretation of it.

@tomer-cool Thanks, coffee helped :P

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-04-30T21:10:10Z

@king-kujito Thanks!

@giardi Thank you!

@matt-fabius I just uploaded a mac compatible version. Well, it *should* work on mac, I'm not entirely sure if I distributed the game correctly, hah.

@clive Thanks! I have ideas on how to proceed with this game and personally I'm excited to execute them.

@oxlander Like I said to the other Matt, I just uploaded a version which *should* work on mac. At least the soundtrack's enough to get people hooked as it seems :grin:

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-05-01T08:25:13Z

@slimabob Yeah, the planet passing's there because of how it fits in the story of the game. It's Qora's day-to-day life - she waits for planets to pass by then explores them in the brief time she has for that. I could've made the game make the planet's passing depend on the player's progress in the game because yeah, the time limit can be rather stressful. I think I'll just slow it down in an update.

@heathor Thanks!

@morrilet I blame the lack of side walking animations on the time limit (and totally not laziness shhhh)

@jdmazz I updated the game to the player more time before the planet passes overhead because of how demanded it is, haha :grin:

@vkmicro I'm surprised, I still feel like there's too *little* to interact with, but it's good enough for a Ludum Dare game I suppose :smile: Thanks!

@spaceman Thank you! Like I said to jdmazz, I updated it to give the player more time.

@akirassasin Yeah, that seems to be the biggest flaw people are pointing out. I'm thinking about having difficulty modes, like a mode where the planet's passing is timed and depends on the player's progress through the game and one where the planet's passing is in real-time.

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-05-01T16:40:55Z

@fangzhangmnm Pretty much the same feelings the music envoke in me. To me the music is humble and peaceful, but at the same time highlights the bittersweetness of Qora's world.

@skywilly Thank you! I have ideas on what to do with the game from this point on, so this should be exciting.

@toccio94 It's a pretty exploration-oriented game. There's not much to distract you, so the objectives should be rather clear (at least I hope, I know the solution by heart because of how many damn times I had to play the thing before release, haha).

@hjalte The walk animation is a common complaint, I'll definitely remake it for any future plans I have with this project.

@ethereal-psyche-games Thank you! Yeah, the "moon" being tied to Qora's own planet is a pretty cute detail and fits in with the rather fairytale-ish theme behind the game in my opinion.

@fufi The music inside Qora's house was composed prior to the jam for a project I abandoned, but everything other than that was made for the jam. Thanks!

@hadik Thanks!

@tombishopspg Aww. Don't worry, I bet Qora appreciates the efforts anyways.

@tyranosaw Undertale definitely served as a great inspiration for this. Heck, it's what got me into composing music in the first place.

@mutfak-studios The framework I used is Löve2D. If you mean libraries in the traditional sense, I didn't use any. All was coded from scratch using knowledge from previous projects.

@dennyrocketdev This seems to be a common complaint, I'll see what I can do to improve on this aspect in the future.

@antaresvaldemar D'oh, I knew there was a broken hitbox somewhere in the game, but I forgot to fix it. Next update, here I come.

@mox That's fantastic to know, thanks, haha.

@lugdumdare-team That's actually pretty much the inspiration for the world! Even the robot's name is a play on the story (the author's name is Antione de Saint-Exupéry).

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-05-01T16:41:05Z

@bionicalbarbiedoll That's pretty much the intention behind it. Qora's life pretty much consists of walking around her own planet and looking to the stars, occasionally climbing up to passing planets to explore them. She heads back to her own and waits for the next one. But inbetween? A whole lot of nothing. Kinda feeling sorry for my own character, haha.

@s-ol I'll rework some graphics in a post-LD version because yeah, a lot of its pretty inconsistent. Heck, the exterior of Qora's hut uses premade patterns in Gimp!

@danman9914 Included that on the itch.io page, woops.

@endlessplumber Qora's just that kinda person. In fact the game's name was initially going to be "Universe's Sweetheart" before I settled on the current, hopefully catchier title. It's strange that the end scene didn't happen after getting stranded. Might have something to do with the ladder's rather weird hitbox, but the stranded ending should be triggered by interacting with where the ladder touched the ground. Yeah, the animations are rather stiff. And thanks! I started messing around with composing only a few months ago, I appreciate that people like it this much, haha.

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-05-01T16:45:35Z

It requires dedication, but yes, I'm responding to every comment. But it's worth it! I love reading every single comment. FireAlpaca_2017-05-01_18-43-43.png

Also, have [this song](https://soundcloud.com/orbitalbp/calmwaters-unused-awihe-song) I was going to use for the other planet before I changed it to be a desolate rock with a single cave.

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-05-01T18:54:33Z

@icecheetah Anything above 30 fps is good enough I hope, but that's pretty funny indeed haha

@wheerd v1.4 on the page has an optional "Calm" mode which removes the time stress, and that's actually something I should fix, so thanks for bringing that up.

@makenai This means a lot to me!

@pschichtel I unfortunately don't have a Linux machine I can use to test distribution. I added a download for the source code contained in a .love file, to run it you'll need to install [Löve2D](https://love2d.org/) (the framework I made it with) on your Linux machine.

@firstdream The player's animation is kinda weird in general, lol, but thanks!

@cooby A lot of people seem to compare it to King's Quest, so yeah, definitely fits into that genre. Thank you!

@randomhuman v1.4 has "Calm" mode which removes the planet's real-time passing. It passes in real-time because that's how it works in the story - other planets don't pass by Qora's own that often, and when they do she only has little time to explore them before returning to her monotone life. Of course, if she spends too long on them, she gets stranded.

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-05-02T16:03:05Z

@geckoo1337 Thanks!

@dayvidmoreira7 Aww, good thing it shows

@yirggzmb Thank you!

@bendev-games Yeah, I can see it being a little confusing, but thanks!

@jeremy-ryan Interesting, you're at least the second person to see the stranded ending as the happiest one. Not that there's an "official happiest ending", it's up to interpretation I guess and I'm loving seeing everyone's interpretations of the game. I intend on improving the graphics for a more polished release on the game, but thanks!

@imdigitaljim I'd love to continue working on the game to further explore its world, comments like that definitely help, haha. Thanks!

@namrog84 I personally am excited to expand on it. Thanks!

@pedro-henrique-cesar Hopefully the updates I keep pushing out make it easier to get, haha.

@jasperarmstrong Knew that something would go wrong with the mac release, but oh well. At least that workaround's good enough.

@simon-rahnasto Wow, in-depth indeed! I can't express my gratitude about how highly it's regarded - it seriously means a lot to me! And it's nice to know that the ladder scene works. I was scared people would find it annoying and tedious, but at least the general atmosphere seems to make people look aside from that for the most part, haha.

@chunkybrewster Thank you!

@brainy-beard Strange - did you press X?

@snowdrama Seems to be because of a bug in v1.5 (if that's the version you played instead of the pre-deadline one). Fixed in v1.6.

LD38: A Space Odyssey by datMarv 2017-04-26T15:24:50Z

My only real complaint is that it's a little challenging to click on the planets in orbit, but a tower defense game with orbits is a rather interesting idea!

A Growing Adventure by frankiesmileshow 2017-05-02T14:56:41Z

I like how you could expand the world by exploring and the battle system was pretty unique. It felt rather bland and repetitive because of the lack of music and the slow waiting times, but the gameplay was enough to keep me hooked! Not to mention the great art. Could make for a neat niche roguelike game if juiced up.

Universal Journey by mundell 2017-05-01T11:32:07Z

Woah, I love the pixel look and rough, yet rigid feel of the game! The retry button can be a little hard to reach depending on certain death situations, but the main gameplay mechanic is pretty fun

SmallWorld by arg410 2017-04-29T20:11:21Z

Seems like something that would make for a great mobile timekiller with a faster pace

Small World by JimmyBG 2017-05-13T19:30:26Z

Wow! The controls were a bit weird, but everybody else has said that so far. Definitely one of my favourites so far, would make for a cool puzzle game if worked more on.

LD44 — Your life is currency

A Burning Rabbit Experiment by Jani Nykanen 2019-04-29T16:36:36Z

Very cute! Looks and feels super polished, lovely experience!

Taco King by benjamin 2019-04-29T14:38:01Z

Super creative take on the theme! The level of polish in this is astounding, super impressive for a game made in 48 hours. Especially in the graphics, my favourite being the Asteroids game in that department, WOW. The idea of the main character aging each time you go to the arcade is a super cute touch too. Unfortunately I encountered a soft-lock in the Space Invaders game where you can't leave the game when the spaceships go under the screen. Still a super fun experience though, I definitely want to try again to see what comes afterwards!

Bloody Runner by DidiGameBoy 2019-04-30T14:03:32Z

Amazing graphics! Love the take on theme with a vampire and blood, that's pretty creative.

Hollowyard by clutterArranger 2019-04-30T16:13:53Z

I think there's a small problem with the game. This is all I see whenever I launch it (Windows 10): explorer_2019-04-30_18-10-57.png I'd love to play this but I can't figure out how to resize it, so any help would be appreciated!

Life Vac by caranha 2019-04-29T15:36:04Z

I love the music, and the vacuum sprite is amazing! Fascinating take on the jam's theme too, playing around with the cells is so much fun.

Heart Knight by mutt 2019-04-30T16:26:01Z

Graphics are top-notch! Gameplay reminds me of "Robot wants kitty", good job. I love how the theme was implemented with the ATM/savings mechanic!

Paynplayne by OrbitalBlueprint 2019-05-05T20:39:17Z

@gear-steak Thank you! Yeah, the linear path problem only really came to mind after the jam had ended, but oh well. I'm glad you enjoy the game's other aspects!

@killedbyapixel Yeah, that's definitely a way to go about it. Definitely not the most desirable, wish the time limit had given me more space to play with the mechanic, but oh well :P I'm not proud of how the ending came about either, it was written an hour before the submission so I couldn't have built it up more. Would've loved to though! I'm gladyou enjoyed it nonetheless, however!

@drrozza Yeah, the ending is definitely something I want to improve if I finish a post-jam release.

@robotsoulsgames Yep. The game has two endings. If you bring the letter to M's sister, she's nice, resulting in the good ending. If you don't have the letter, she locks you up and tortures you for the gold, something M hints at in one of her lines. This is the bad ending you got :P

@mutt The game has no fullscreen feature, unfortunately. Something to include in the post-jam release!

To everyone else, thank you for the kind words and criticism! I'm definitely going to make an updated post-jam version using your feedback, I hope you'll come back to it later if you enjoyed the compo version. Other than that I'm just glad this was received so well! Ludum Dare is always such an interesting experience...

Darkest Decision by pmarincak 2019-04-30T13:34:35Z

AMAZING AMBIENCE! Definitely my favourite jam submission, great job. The graphics, the audio, and the writing is perfect.

Sapling by Treeboater 2019-04-30T16:30:32Z

This is such a soothing and calming experience....

Blood For Power by Finnhax 2019-04-30T13:27:30Z

I love the ambience and the music so much! The main character moves a little too slow imo, but it's still fun regardless.

Doc. BLOODAWAY by randdir 2019-04-29T15:04:18Z

The graphics is definitely the greatest part about it. The monochromatic colour palette combined with the simple, jazzy background music gives off a pretty somber mood, and that's great for what the story has. Like everyone else has been saying, I don't think randomness is really engaging for a game like this, but the art style definitely makes up for it!

SENTINEL by JesusAcHe 2019-04-30T18:15:52Z

Great implementation of the theme! Outstanding and polished graphics! Overall a great job!

Bunny Powered Money Machine by rainfrogs 2019-04-29T16:47:51Z

I found it a bit too hard, but the mechanics are pretty interesting and unique! Nice entry!

ORBid by Martynas 2019-04-29T15:16:56Z

The music and the graphics set an AMAZING mood, especially with the main character design and the floating life orbs. This would be amazing as a mobile game!

Lost coin by TinySalad 2019-04-29T15:41:22Z

Cute short game! I laughed when I figured out that the game is a literal take on the theme, great job on that :P

The graphics suit it well, the coin's sound effect is pretty satisfying. I imagine in a full game the man would be walking further and further away from you, and as the coin it's your job to catch up with him, but this game's length suits it nicely!

Forgotten Keep by burst 2019-04-30T16:08:51Z

I would absolutely love to play a longer version of this! Could do with some audio, but the graphics definitely make up for it. The colour palette gives it a super eery and cool atmosphere.

Devaluation by Toni_re 2019-04-29T19:22:01Z

Definitely my favourite take on the theme LMAO

The Stranger by Vectrex28 2019-04-29T16:25:16Z

Surprising entry! Making a NES game like this in 48 hours is super impressive, so great job! The graphics are superb, although I had a little trouble reading the text.

-1 (Minus 1) by Mahou 2019-04-29T15:28:54Z

FANTASTIC OMINOUS MOOD. The art style and the audio are weird in a very good way. I agree that the main character moves a little too slow. I think the mechanic of losing health could've tied into the game a little more somehow, but I'm glad I made it to the end with enough health left. I'd love to see this mood used in a bigger project, great job!

Cult Master by xSupah 2019-04-29T14:51:27Z

Fun idle game with a cool take on the theme! It feels a bit repetitive for now, I think diverse kinds of houses and cult members would have helped in that aspect, but this is a good base concept for being made in 48 hours. Great job!

Reply to this message to notify me when the downloadable link is out, the screenshots look pretty cool so I'm interested in playing :)

Labyrinth by Brendev 2021-05-01T12:56:08Z

Other comments already pointed out that the beginning is a little too abrupt. Genuinely super terrifying though, really felt the anxiety when I suddenly noticed the minotaur chasing me! Really hoping to see this fleshed out after the jam because god damn, this has potential.

Go, Little Mole! by maxr00 2021-05-01T13:17:43Z

The core mechanic is SUPER creative and you made especially good use of it :D The final challenge was a little frustrating since I'd keep falling down, but I can ignore that since otherwise it was a neat little experience.

Meltdown, Down, Down by Cruise Elroy 2021-05-01T13:09:48Z

The sprites and captivating gameplay are super impressive and very well-polished for a 48 hour games, congrats! Would be really cool to see a minor (miner???????) update after the jam with some of the suggestions above.

Chimes by Pohko 2021-04-26T16:21:45Z

Cute little world! It would have been nice to either have some small things for the player to interact with while walking, or to have a button that would allow the player to go faster, but there's only so much one can do with the jam's time constraints :) The depth of field also made me a little dizzy, so it would have been nice to have an option to turn it off. Other than that, super relaxing with neat visuals! Also the fact that the level is randomly-generated is super cool :)

Deep Below Ground by v0idpointer 2021-04-26T16:56:26Z

The backstory is pretty funny, I liked that part. Some comments:

1. I feel like the game itself isn't quite challenging enough. It feels too similar for the most part 2. It takes quite a long time for the magic bar to refill 3. This is minor, but it's hard to see the wizard enemy's attacks in the room with the purple floor

I do like the different attacks that the player can use though, and I also find it cool how some slimes have different gameplay mechanics, especially the ice slime who reflects your attacks and freezes you.

Vinewell by dpmzi 2021-05-01T12:52:35Z

I feel like the slow movement can make it a little unforgiving, especially in tight parts, however there are some REALLY cool ideas in here. Using the walls to sharpen the knife is genuinely really clever and was fun to figure out. Hope to see this fleshed out after the jam!

Bob's Depth by phealsout 2021-04-26T16:32:16Z

I agree with the comment above, the lack of instructions makes it quite confusing. The actual beam mechanic seems pretty interesting though, with how enemies can react differently to the type of beam, that's pretty cool!

Defiled Reflection by BidentWorks 2021-04-26T16:35:51Z

The animations are genuinely really cool, they make this game stand out pretty nicely! Some bugs I noticed:

1. The game starts minimized, but you can't see the full game without going into full-screen. This confused me a bit at the beginning. 2. The death animation seems to replay when you respawn sometimes.

I agree with CorbenG's comment about the controls, but other than that it's pretty neat, and like I said, the graphics & animations are super cool.
