I got an error in dialogue.lua:192: attempt to get length of a nil value when talking to the robot after he's powered up, and had to kill the application. But what I saw so far was pretty nice though, I like the art!

Hey everyone, I got a fixed version of @Orbitalblueprint 's executable if you guys encounter problems with the one in the main post.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/pv47m1b7zmfehh1/awihe_fix.zip?dl=0
Everything is exactly the same, but the issues with the water movement were fixed. Hopefully Orb will be able to update the main post later today, as he asked me to fix the executable while he was busy. Have a good one, everybody, and very nice work Orb!
Cute little game. I really like the atmosphere and story. I also appreciate that it has multiple endings. The graphics are quite nice (outside of the graphical bug with the water), though I'm not a fan of Qora's walking animation. The music is also nice. The one thing I don't really like is how the planet actually moves in real time. It does enhance the atmosphere, but I feel the time pressure it adds doesn't really benefit the game (I like exploring and examining everything).
A couple issues: * If you interact with Exupery after using the biofuel the same dialogue/animation will replay * If you talk to Exupery a third time after putting in the battery, the game will crash with this message:
``` Error
dialogue.lua:192: attempt to get length of a nil value
Traceback
dialogue.lua:192: in function 'show_dialogue' entities/exupery.lua:107: in function 'interact' entities/qora.lua:259: in function 'kp' entities.lua:116: in function 'kp' main.lua:240: in function
Very nice! one thing though (don't know if this is intended) is that you can activate the biofuel generator before Exupery tells you that he needs it!
@jusw85 Fixed that, and thanks!
@HugoBDesigner <3
@Veralos Thanks for the constructive criticism! I blame Qora's rather weird running animation on the time constraint, hah. Fixed both glitches.
@FyreDemon405 ... I saw this comment before uploading v1.1, but forgot to fix that. Oh well, until v1.2 that's just something people can use to their advantage :P
Are there more than 2 endings?
Nostalgic! Had a blast playing this!
I liked the music and the story :smile:. It's a little frustrating having to speed run to not miss the planet and doing all the things there are to it, but it could point out the chances we miss in life when we hesitate too much to step out of our small world, our comfort zone. Was this the inspiring thought?
Cool. You made a lot in 72 hours.
@GEWDA Kinda. The two different endings are the one you reach on Qora's planet and the one you reach on Exupery's planet. There are two variations of the one on Qora's planet and three on Exupery's - although the differences between each are rather small.
@nicolas-shapland Thanks!
@davikin92 I didn't really put that much thought into the theme of the story/gameplay, but I really like that interpretation of it.
@tomer-cool Thanks, coffee helped :P
The art looks very cute.
Wow, good game! The art is simple, but very beautiful. Good work :D
Couldn't actually play the game (Mac) but I like the soundtrack!
This game is really quite nice. It was really short and sweet with enough story to make it interesting. I think with with some more work it could really blossom into something wonderful!
Like Matt Fabius (ironically my nickname is Matt), I couldn't play the game because I'm on Mac. But the soundtrack works and I can say it certainly want me to play your game even more!
@king-kujito Thanks!
@giardi Thank you!
@matt-fabius I just uploaded a mac compatible version. Well, it *should* work on mac, I'm not entirely sure if I distributed the game correctly, hah.
@clive Thanks! I have ideas on how to proceed with this game and personally I'm excited to execute them.
@oxlander Like I said to the other Matt, I just uploaded a version which *should* work on mac. At least the soundtrack's enough to get people hooked as it seems :grin:
Haha, you can just go right back to bed and end the game there. Nice.
Very nice art style, and the multiple endings are cool. I feel like the planets might have crossed a bit too quickly though. Even going as fast as I could, I was barely able to fix the robot in time.
Regardless, nice work on the project! :)
I really like the atmosphere and music
This is a really cool entry. The art and music work well, and the style of the home planet is incredible. My only gripe is that there's no sideways animation, but that's not a huge deal. I ended up missing the ladder, but I love that it could end either way. Nicely done.
If you're interested in trying another space/planet-themed game, check out my entry, rovR: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/rovr
Cheers!
I really like the options on this one. The timing seems a little too aggressive on your first playthough. I barely had enough time after doing everything wrong. I slept in, missed the planet. Took too long, became stranded on the planet. Took too long again but became stranded with an active robot. This is really good and has a lot of moving parts for Ludum Dare. Good job!
Nice audio, especially loved the little touches such as text appearing with sound (the sound could be a little quieter, it's a little sharp and loud imho) and nice attention to detail such as different sound when walking through water and such. I like the amount of objects to interract with. The idea of using ladder to climb between planets is super cool :D i really liked that. Didn't expect to see something like that. Very nice environments and I do like the art style, it's very soothing and easy on the eye, imho only thing i'd complain about as far as art goes is walking sideways sprites. But besides that it's very nice and fun little game. A lot more things to interract with than i expected so definitely deserves a high rating. Good job.
I really liked the art, especially in the planet changing scene. The time limit is a cool idea, but it was a little frustrating the first time through when I had to restart because I didn't realize time passed. I also loved the audio (like the way that the robot had different sounds than the normal text). Overall really cool!
Really liked the game! However, the time limit (after which the planet leaves) can take away some of the fun, making the player blaze through the game instead of appreciating the marvellous environment.
It's cool that you used the actual time to detemine where the planet is. Had to play it a few times to get things right. I really enjoyed it. Good job!
I played this the other day on Livestream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiOC3F43xF0
Great Atmosphere with the style of game. I think maybe fixing the sound to be a little less jarring?
I think my playthru was bugged, I wasn't able to progress. Maybe some more exposition telling me what to do?
Great job with the art style.
Nice concept. Definitely brought back memories of King's Quest. Also nice to hear some original music. The beginning of the song was a little abrasive with the metallic instruments, which changed the mood for me when I returned to her planet (would like something softer. Timing was too quick. Second time through, I didn't waste any time and I still missed the ladder. Would love to see an expanded version of this game where different types of planets pass overhead.
Good job! Mac version worked on 10.10.5 Yosemite for me!
@slimabob Yeah, the planet passing's there because of how it fits in the story of the game. It's Qora's day-to-day life - she waits for planets to pass by then explores them in the brief time she has for that. I could've made the game make the planet's passing depend on the player's progress in the game because yeah, the time limit can be rather stressful. I think I'll just slow it down in an update.
@heathor Thanks!
@morrilet I blame the lack of side walking animations on the time limit (and totally not laziness shhhh)
@jdmazz I updated the game to the player more time before the planet passes overhead because of how demanded it is, haha :grin:
@vkmicro I'm surprised, I still feel like there's too *little* to interact with, but it's good enough for a Ludum Dare game I suppose :smile: Thanks!
@spaceman Thank you! Like I said to jdmazz, I updated it to give the player more time.
@akirassasin Yeah, that seems to be the biggest flaw people are pointing out. I'm thinking about having difficulty modes, like a mode where the planet's passing is timed and depends on the player's progress through the game and one where the planet's passing is in real-time.
Your game makes me feel truly living in that small planet. Music of solitude and void and the grand of universe
PS You could emphasize the time limit more in the dialogues.
A great adventure who deserve a "big version" on the stores. Congratulations !
Nice little game, I spent a while playing this one. The art style was really awesome, the audio was very immersive. Overall, very nice experience.
Nice game, but it was too much like a trial and error..
Damn, this was so wonderful. The music, graphics and setting played together so well and made for a fantastic mood. If I had to critize I'd say the walkcycle is a bit ugly but everything else makes up for it tenfold. I also really love that you took the time to create the wide shot with the ladder and what not. So pretty and atmospheric. Really put things into perspective and it was really cute. Loved it!
I really enjoyed the game! It was great to see the planet moving acording to the time and it was funny to see the little planet tied with a rope. Great job!
The mood of the game is great. I'm impressed that you were able to do this in such a short time. Check our own version of a space game! :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/hexoworld-9999
I love that mood, is so absorbing. You create awesome world with original hit to theme :) Top entry :)
Definitely hit the mark on mood and story. I got stuck quite early though. Maybe my adventure game skills are bad :(
Ahhh, hits me right back to the undertale days. What a great game to make in 3 days, love it!
reminds me of undertale , cool game
which library do you use with lua
Mood, music and art is fantastic, but I had no clue what to do, no sense of direction and everything resorted to trial and error. I feel like you should communicate the goal better.
That's a pretty nice game, I didn't get everything, but for what I get, it was nice! Great idea!
Wow, this game is so charming! I love the premise and the whole little story, and how the movement of the passing planet is woven into it. A minor bug is that when clicking on the ladder, sometimes I had to click it twice for some reason before it would work. Other than that, really great game!
It had a neat style, and I really liked how the moon was tied off to the side. The music and artwork really fit the game. The mac version worked great. Thank you.
Very good atmosphere and music. Reminds me "The Little Prince" a little bit. Very relaxing game, good job :)
Quite the world you've created there! Loved the space scene. Amazing music too, and multiple endings in a jam game to boot! Good job!
Omg! This is such a cute game, I loved the atmosphere and the songs are right on, the story is a pearl, it's simple but so well executed.
I also love the way the game is so open-ended, the way the end-game screen just lingers there if you choose to not restart is just marvelous, the story doesn't have a feeling of finished, every time the game ends I can't help but imagine what Qora is going to do next and remember that she doesn't quite have anything else to do, there is a sense of bittersweetness to it all. Overall to me 5/5. Good Job!
Slow paced game with something to figure out. I used to play Kings Quest back in the day so I related to this type of game. Nice start of something here.
Different from all the other games I've played so far, I liked the exploration and gathering different items.
Wow, I really love the story and the sounds that bring it to life. Some of the pixel art is really well done but I feel overall the game could use a bit more visual consistency, the light circles for example would look a lot better if they matched the rest. Also it's very cool to have this time-based story that actually has multiple endings. :thumbsup:
Really excellent entry. Lots of intrigue. The zoomed out shot of the planets with the ladder between is gorgeous. However, you really should include the version of the game that you submitted before the deadline for rating purposes!
I like this game - A little melancholy, a little pleasant. The idea of traveling alone in such a vast dark space, of finding someone, and then watching them leave, perhaps forever, is a bit sad. But at the same time, the kindness of helping someone out and the small pleasures of the tiny planet bring a bit of levity.
Out of a bit orneriness, I first overslept, then went back to sleep, effectively skipping the whole game. I really enjoyed that as first experience, it cememted how important the player's actions are in your story. The multiple endings were cool (although I got stranded on the robot's planet once without cutting to an end scene), and the art was fitting, although the animations could have used more love.
The music was the star of this game, though. Well done on evoking just the right mood, and keeping that through the different areas.
I do wish I was able to explore the tiny lasso'ed moon, though. So evocative :grin:
@fangzhangmnm Pretty much the same feelings the music envoke in me. To me the music is humble and peaceful, but at the same time highlights the bittersweetness of Qora's world.
@skywilly Thank you! I have ideas on what to do with the game from this point on, so this should be exciting.
@toccio94 It's a pretty exploration-oriented game. There's not much to distract you, so the objectives should be rather clear (at least I hope, I know the solution by heart because of how many damn times I had to play the thing before release, haha).
@hjalte The walk animation is a common complaint, I'll definitely remake it for any future plans I have with this project.
@ethereal-psyche-games Thank you! Yeah, the "moon" being tied to Qora's own planet is a pretty cute detail and fits in with the rather fairytale-ish theme behind the game in my opinion.
@fufi The music inside Qora's house was composed prior to the jam for a project I abandoned, but everything other than that was made for the jam. Thanks!
@hadik Thanks!
@tombishopspg Aww. Don't worry, I bet Qora appreciates the efforts anyways.
@tyranosaw Undertale definitely served as a great inspiration for this. Heck, it's what got me into composing music in the first place.
@mutfak-studios The framework I used is Löve2D. If you mean libraries in the traditional sense, I didn't use any. All was coded from scratch using knowledge from previous projects.
@dennyrocketdev This seems to be a common complaint, I'll see what I can do to improve on this aspect in the future.
@antaresvaldemar D'oh, I knew there was a broken hitbox somewhere in the game, but I forgot to fix it. Next update, here I come.
@mox That's fantastic to know, thanks, haha.
@lugdumdare-team That's actually pretty much the inspiration for the world! Even the robot's name is a play on the story (the author's name is Antione de Saint-Exupéry).
@bionicalbarbiedoll That's pretty much the intention behind it. Qora's life pretty much consists of walking around her own planet and looking to the stars, occasionally climbing up to passing planets to explore them. She heads back to her own and waits for the next one. But inbetween? A whole lot of nothing. Kinda feeling sorry for my own character, haha.
@s-ol I'll rework some graphics in a post-LD version because yeah, a lot of its pretty inconsistent. Heck, the exterior of Qora's hut uses premade patterns in Gimp!
@danman9914 Included that on the itch.io page, woops.
@endlessplumber Qora's just that kinda person. In fact the game's name was initially going to be "Universe's Sweetheart" before I settled on the current, hopefully catchier title. It's strange that the end scene didn't happen after getting stranded. Might have something to do with the ladder's rather weird hitbox, but the stranded ending should be triggered by interacting with where the ladder touched the ground. Yeah, the animations are rather stiff. And thanks! I started messing around with composing only a few months ago, I appreciate that people like it this much, haha.
It requires dedication, but yes, I'm responding to every comment. But it's worth it! I love reading every single comment. FireAlpaca_2017-05-01_18-43-43.png
Also, have [this song](https://soundcloud.com/orbitalbp/calmwaters-unused-awihe-song) I was going to use for the other planet before I changed it to be a desolate rock with a single cave.
Kinda cute and I was a bit gutted when I couldn't go back to get the robot some biofuel because of the time. I'd played the pre-deadline version and it ran at a consistant 59fps. I found that a bit funny since your description said it was best experienced at 60fps. I do like the music of this and am glad you provided a download.
I also enjoyed the story when I got the full version with the Calm mode.
The mood of the game is lovely :grin: I love the idea of reaching another planet with a ladder. The riddles are pretty straight forward, but I guess I ran out of time before I could fully get my new robot friend going. The music also fits nicely with the athmosphere. One think that tripped me up a bit is when you have to make a choice suddenly after some dialog. I tend to spam the action button to go on reading and then accidentially make the wrong choice :worried: Very impressive game overall!
Fanciful and cute! Good writing and nice mood and soundscape. This was very well done! I'll come back and play this one again.
Sadly no Linux and/or Web version :(
This is a great concept and I enjoy how you created the dialog. I also love the little ! when you can interact with something. the walking animation looks weird, but cute, when you go to the left or right but I think thats fine. Over all, the music was nice and every thing was well done.
Nice take on the "point and click" genre. Great theming, mood, music, writing, and art.
What a lovely little story! Sound, music, art, all excellent and atmospheric. I'm not sure the real-time aspect adds much except to make everything feel rushed. Maybe that was the point? To reinforce the fleeting nature of the encounter?
Cute and pretty fun, I really got caught into the atmosphere of the game and a perfect execution of the theme. Would love it if you gave our game a try :)
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/explorer-extraordinaire
@icecheetah Anything above 30 fps is good enough I hope, but that's pretty funny indeed haha
@wheerd v1.4 on the page has an optional "Calm" mode which removes the time stress, and that's actually something I should fix, so thanks for bringing that up.
@makenai This means a lot to me!
@pschichtel I unfortunately don't have a Linux machine I can use to test distribution. I added a download for the source code contained in a .love file, to run it you'll need to install [Löve2D](https://love2d.org/) (the framework I made it with) on your Linux machine.
@firstdream The player's animation is kinda weird in general, lol, but thanks!
@cooby A lot of people seem to compare it to King's Quest, so yeah, definitely fits into that genre. Thank you!
@randomhuman v1.4 has "Calm" mode which removes the planet's real-time passing. It passes in real-time because that's how it works in the story - other planets don't pass by Qora's own that often, and when they do she only has little time to explore them before returning to her monotone life. Of course, if she spends too long on them, she gets stranded.
Nice story - and well done using löve. There is a good mood with a pleasant background music. I like it ++
Was made with care and love, we can see it! It's a nice and pretty game!!
Ah, excellent short adventure. Love it!
I liked the game! Nice use of the theme and nice graphics. I only missed the lateral animations, but the rest of the game is perfect!
Great game and beautiful art, specially when you are going from one planet to another. I was a little lost, like didn't know where to go or what to do, but in some way it created a more unique experience.
Great game!
Very interesting game! I like the feeling of running out of time --- my first time I got stuck on the pink planet, but I'm starting to think that that's the happiest ending anyway. Really good execution of the theme. Additional puzzles/endings would make it even better, and if you had more time for the graphics.
This should be a real commercially available game, I really liked it a lot! Fun point and click, great art, music, and gameplay. Great job!
Pretty neat! Would love to see this expanded
Good music, it is a little hard to understand at the beggining but good job, fun game!
This game is great! I really like how you handled walking around the planets. The mac version didn't work (it just gave me the default love2d screen), but I was able to run the .love file directly.
As promised on the Löve forums here is my more in-depth feedback of "A World In Her Eye". First of all, the atmosphere is just fantastic, this is achieved from a coherent look, feel and sound. I really appreciate the amount of audio in this game, an otherwise often forgotten and neglected area in Ludum Dare entries. I love the visuals, there is an insane amount of work and overall polish that is rare to find in a game made in such a short time.
The walk animation just works, its simple and only 2 directions, but it ties into the games, in lack of a better word humor and just enhances the gameplay. I absolutely love the ladder "scene", it could very easily have been annoying to have to climb it up and down, but it was implemented in a way that just made the world more immersive.
The 3 best things with this game is that it is: #1 brave, doing things differently. #2 Has great cohersive graphics and #3 has incredible audio.
Really well done, one of my absolute favourite entries that I have come across over the 8 Ludum Dare events that I have participated in.
Wow, just wow. The look and the music and the creativity - a nice little adventure game. Great job with this!
I don't know if it's broken or what, it says Qora is asleep and I click everywhere but nothing happens :( Really nice itch.io page though!!
Fun game, Locks up randomly when I activate things. It says X to continue but then does nothing. Usually when activating the bread machine.
@geckoo1337 Thanks!
@dayvidmoreira7 Aww, good thing it shows
@yirggzmb Thank you!
@bendev-games Yeah, I can see it being a little confusing, but thanks!
@jeremy-ryan Interesting, you're at least the second person to see the stranded ending as the happiest one. Not that there's an "official happiest ending", it's up to interpretation I guess and I'm loving seeing everyone's interpretations of the game. I intend on improving the graphics for a more polished release on the game, but thanks!
@imdigitaljim I'd love to continue working on the game to further explore its world, comments like that definitely help, haha. Thanks!
@namrog84 I personally am excited to expand on it. Thanks!
@pedro-henrique-cesar Hopefully the updates I keep pushing out make it easier to get, haha.
@jasperarmstrong Knew that something would go wrong with the mac release, but oh well. At least that workaround's good enough.
@simon-rahnasto Wow, in-depth indeed! I can't express my gratitude about how highly it's regarded - it seriously means a lot to me! And it's nice to know that the ladder scene works. I was scared people would find it annoying and tedious, but at least the general atmosphere seems to make people look aside from that for the most part, haha.
@chunkybrewster Thank you!
@brainy-beard Strange - did you press X?
@snowdrama Seems to be because of a bug in v1.5 (if that's the version you played instead of the pre-deadline one). Fixed in v1.6.
Awesome little game! I liked how it had several endings~ The graphics and audio were nice too, though that walk cycle was awkward :P
Really lovely graphics, music, and atmosphere. As other commenters have mentioned, I do wish the story was a bit slower so I could enjoy the game environment. Overall, great work :)
Lovely game that bought back fond memories of the adventure games of my youth. Love the atmosphere and richness of the setting. All the criticisms I have, have all been covered above. Thanks for this game, I really enjoyed it.
Nice and quiet game~ Stranded with the robot on the passing planet forever~ The music is gorgeous and made with pure-heart. :smile:
I had the lua error on the dialog with the robot so I had no choice that to test the latest version (I prefer not to do that for a jam but it was just too frustratring to not see the end). I didn't regret that.. what a lovely game! The art and musics are just fantastic and fit perfectly together, the mood and story, though really short, are quite nostalgic. This setting with the ladder between planets is absolutely gorgeous and got this The Little Prince vibe that I find charming.
To conclude it's just a great and unique entry. The amount of work is impressing (especially the sound design with multiple tracks), and it doesn't feel like a game from a jam at all (except from the crash of course :°). Well done!
This is just the kind of game I'd love to see more of in Ludum Dare. It's rare to see a game with such an eye for beauty and penchant for emotional impact. I normally nitpick the heck out of games, but other than the weird walk cycle, I can't find anything to complain about here. There's an impressive amount of polish for a jam game, the soundtrack is stellar (or planetary, I guess), and the story gives me a lot to think about. Very well done overall.
P.S. the mac version works for me without any problems.
Thanks for putting in a "calm" mode. This was a lovely experience, and I enjoyed the kinda Hawkeye-like robot, that was totally unexpected.
Very good art and mood. Great job!
This was the first game I played this Ludum Dare, but I decided to revisit it. Something about it just stuck with me. I played the post-jam version and it looks like you've made some nice additions.
Sorry if I was a little critical with my initial comment - it's sort of hard to gauge your expectations without playing a few games. This is definitely among the best in terms of mood and music, and the visuals are up there too (especially now you've fixed that water bug). I bumped up some of my ratings because I feel the game deserves it.
Really interesting story! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3lV-lDD06U
Wow, lots of comments! I thought this game was really fun, even if I didn't understand the objective too well (I played the 48-hour version). I liked the graphics and the music as well. Good job!
