LD38 — A Small World

Turing Compete by Kaisean Games 2017-05-14T21:04:36Z

Pretty cool visual and 2d interpretation of the Turing Machine, this could do well teaching people about it since it makes much more 'sense' coming from a general purpose computing point of view than a machine that writes symbols on an infinite piece of paper.

@knightowl what do you mean by 'control the experience'? There is some minimal integrated UI, the three/two/one dots in the paddle (that are supposed to be properly centered but aren't) are the health display for example.

Plonat Atek by s-ol 2017-05-03T21:50:39Z

@samlo: thanks! Definitely look into upsampling, that's what makes the dood.al vectorscope so good, and it would be really nice if you find a way to make it auto-bind/register a loopback interface so it works without people setting up a virtual audio card just for this.

@juan: which emulator did you try? The one in then Windows package is quite bad, as I note in the Instructions on itch.io, but the one at https://dood.al/oscilloscope/ is really good, but requires a bit more set-up unless your sound card has 'stereo-mix' or you have a good audio setup already. Or check local ads/craigslist for a used analgo osci :stuck_out_tongue:

Plonat Atek by s-ol 2017-05-14T15:38:55Z

@iwa it should be rather straightforward to try with the instructions on itch, albeit in a software emulated Oscilloscope of course.

Plonat Atek by s-ol 2017-05-14T20:47:02Z

Thanks for the kind comments everyone!

@jelch that's super cool, most likely the second piece of hardware ever this has been played on! Waiting for @kl0z to claim the next :stuck_out_tongue:

@puppetmaster: the curve actually comes naturally with polar coordinates. I was actually thinking about amplifying the effect but the way I hastily implemented the hit-detection made it risky to change it late into the project.

Microchip IO by ping78 2017-05-14T17:31:46Z

I really like the visual interpretation of this, mixing the metally chip optic with the logical component style. A bit more instructions would've been nice because the UI was not completely self-explanatory and even though I knew what to expect it took me a bit to figure out what to do. Otherwise this looks really well done and polished.

Rock-E by endlesspeak 2017-05-14T16:27:17Z

Very fun game with superb voice acting :P The art also had it's charm (and the animations are great) and it's just super funny. Great job!

o, the game by pta2002 2017-05-01T15:32:03Z

Very cool, a minimalist take on the 'small planet' concept that really works well IMO. I loved the planet-collapse animation too, the reduced style of everything really integrates it well.

Also it's always nice to see fellow LOVErs in the wild :)

Lalao by ysty 2017-05-14T15:54:33Z

This was really cool, I loved the voice acting and story. It would've been cool to have a bit more gameplay to get into the mood, but I think most of the time went into the other assets and paid off well there. Near flawless execution IMO

Our little island by tinyworlds 2017-05-02T19:16:38Z

Love the cute drawings and animations :)

Strategic Survival by marbles 2017-05-18T14:48:58Z

Pretty cool! I love the sprites. I would have liked a bit more variety in the stuff you get attacked with, it was rather easy to spam the bigger towers and some ammo and just let it run.

slovenly shopper by jelch 2017-05-14T21:12:36Z

Hilarious game and nicely integrated theme. I loved the dramatic opening, especially with the sound for it.

It got pretty hard very fast, and it wasn't always obvious which way someone was looking but I guess that's part of the game.

Taste the rainbow by Kalm004 2017-05-14T16:15:32Z

Looks like a pretty cool concept, unfortunately I can't play it since there is no Linux build. I like the visuals of the main game but I think the title screen could look a lot better and match that style.

A World in a Jar by Zeknir 2017-05-02T19:24:23Z

Sadly I can't play this on Linux, when I try to press buttons in the menu nothing happens :(

It looks like a pretty complete thing though, tag me if you maybe fix it :)

A World in a Jar by Zeknir 2017-05-03T21:42:33Z

@Zeknir: I run Arch Linux and usually don't have any issues with Unity games.

I just tried it again on my Desktop PC (same setup), and apparently it's a fullscreen problem, when I make it windowed it works.

This game seems to have a lot of content for a LD entry and looks and feels whery polished, great job! I'm also not sure if it is hard or I just don't have a lot of intuition concerning plants :stuck_out_tongue:

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-05-01T15:53:02Z

Wow, I really love the story and the sounds that bring it to life. Some of the pixel art is really well done but I feel overall the game could use a bit more visual consistency, the light circles for example would look a lot better if they matched the rest. Also it's very cool to have this time-based story that actually has multiple endings.

Her name by canochaba 2017-05-14T16:10:31Z

As others have said, fixing the texture filtering would've probably helped the art a lot. For the gameplay it would've been nice to be able to speed up the text sometimes, it took a bit long especially after reading a line about an object and waiting for the 'Take this object?' to appear.

Otherwise nice concept and props to getting it done :)

Monolith by samlo 2017-05-02T19:19:22Z

Really love the dithered rendering. I think the lock-on time is necessary to trade off the shooting, but it maybe feels a bit long to stay in the enemies' fire.

leafo's game is actually has a very similar mechanic: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/sphincter-quest

Bio Noid by zetashocker 2017-05-02T19:56:03Z

Is there a way to get a Linux build? The teaser looks like some awesome pixel art and I would like to give it a go :)

Also I'm not sure how your game plays with international keyboards, but it's a good idea to bind both y, z and w to the same key or not use it because these are swapped on a lot of european keyboards. Alternatively using x,c,v works well with QWERTY, QWERTZ and AZERTY aswell.

Penguin Deliveries by Nomaki 2017-05-16T17:46:07Z

Nice simple concept and well executed with crisp graphics. One thing I would change is to add a moving (parallax?) background so it is easier to orient oneself.

Planetone by shillingburg 2017-05-03T21:57:32Z

This is very cool and super polished. The only thing I would say is maybe the visuals are a bit too bright.

Salacius Crumb's Small Journey by Alcarendor 2017-05-18T15:14:47Z

Very hard but cool game with nice music. Do you know keyboard sports? That control scheme would have worked very well here:

The Inner Lock by EveningWayward 2017-05-02T21:14:35Z

Love the graphics in this one :)

Depth Gun by leafo 2017-05-01T15:18:01Z

I'm pretty bad at this, but I really like the music! Very well polished once again too. I feel like the Missiles might be a bit overpowered but maybe I'm just not using the gun well enough.

TUNNELHELP by picxinet 2017-05-18T14:56:37Z

I like the concept and it fits the theme well. It would've been nice to have the city view on a key too, and I guess a bit of transparency to check alignment wouldn't hurt either.

The SACCULOS Saga by s-ol 2018-08-22T01:06:55Z

@omiya-games

> I mean, I guess it’s a commentary on our obsessions with sequels?

There is more to it. In fact there is an infinite series of infinitely large things, and another, separate, infinite series of infinitely small things within each Sacculus.

S.T.A.C.K.E.R. Clear Bag by DrEvilBrain 2018-08-21T17:27:45Z

The "Continue Travelling" button wasn't obvious to me, I thought the browser version was broken until I realized it's a button by itself in the standalone build (i kept pressing the checkmark). To make it more understandable either add a hover style or disable the buttons when there is no choice to do.

Other then that this is a very cool entry! I like the writing and it's fun to play for quite a long time :)

Sinking by Bungalow 2018-08-21T17:31:49Z

Visually very interesting! The top coming down was the only part that didn't do the rest justice I would say.
