LD38 — A Small World

Not Enough Space by mactinite 2017-05-05T05:58:26Z

Wish I could find my xbox controllers so I could try this out. I am using Mac, and was able to compile the program and run it on my Mac, but didn't have the xbox controllers to actually play. Looks cool. I did not feel it would be right for me to rate the game, so I did not.

Just as a heads up, when the screen shows up to add additional players, it shows P1, P2, P1, P1. I'm wondering if it should be P1, P2, P3, P4.

Extraction by Criobite 2017-05-17T18:14:37Z

I think I beat the game. I got the ID card and attempted to put it in the reader, but it just went back into my inventory. The screwdriver was not very obvious. I had to look at the comments to see what I was missing.

Like the graphics. They were also very consistent from room to room.

Little Rocks in the Sky by acotis 2017-05-17T16:58:31Z

Nice start of a potentially fun physics game. Reminded me of Super Mario Galaxy. Was unsure of the objective, as I was able to collect all four piece of whatever it was I was collecting, but then was unable to launch back from the far right planets. I am thinking the planet at the top middle of the mini map is probably where I needed to go. Would have like some kind of sound effects or music, and the worlds could have used some variety, whether its different colors or some kind of patterns. Physics were pretty good, occasionally my character would not approach the other planet I was jumping to properly, and it didn't feel like a smooth reentry (if that makes sense). I would have expected my momentum to take me around the planet, but it sometimes abruptly changed course.

Would like to see a polished version of this game with the planets spread out and the screen size increased. Having enemies to fight would add a challenge to the game, too.

Edit: I went ahead and listened to the .wav files you had in the resources folder. The music was simple and had a classical feel to it. Would recommend layering a few instruments to give the song more depth. The jump sound was great! Wish it made it in the game!

SUPER METROARIO by puppetmaster 2017-05-01T21:58:22Z

I really want to play this! It looks awesome, but I could not find a Mac download. You compiled in Linux, should be able to build it in Mac OS. I'll try to play on a Windows machine tonight.

Would love for you to check out our entry in the Jam:

An Ant World by wolar 2017-05-08T07:36:12Z

Game was a little too tricky. The beetle was just eating all my ants. I had four warriors, and it just ate them too. Not so fun when your colony is decimated right away. The sliders did not make much sense. The text had a lot of spelling mistakes.

Good start, but needs to be more balanced, especially against the beetles.

BTW, works fine on my Mac running macOS 10.10.5 Yosemite.

TerminAnt by davikin92 2017-05-11T06:34:42Z

This was pretty fun and unique. Pencils looked great, rest of the graphics needed something more, maybe more animations. Sound effects were also well done. After I completed the game, I did end up wanting more. The jump mechanics in the eraser part was not quite right, kept missing.

Bureaucratic Deity Simulator 2018 by mmason 2017-05-11T07:17:06Z

This game was very enjoyable. Got stumped toward the end. Liked the graphics, and the audio was top notch. Good job! Text was hard to see, might look better if I could put it in full screen mode.

Works great on macOS running 10.10.5 Yosemite, BTW.

Petri World by raincole 2017-05-01T20:51:13Z

Well, that was interesting... Can't say it was a whole lot of fun, but I found it very satisfying. I kept feeding the petri dish in hopes of multiplying certain colored cells. Would have been nice to have a counter for how many cells are in the dish, and maybe a timer to see if you can beat your last score. Would aid in a resolution to the "game." It has an interesting concept, and there is potential to introduce viruses. Maybe make it like a city simulator where you build up your culture, then destroy it with different viruses/conditions.

We would love for you to check out our Jam game, and let us know what you think!

SLINGSHOOT by chaoclypse 2017-05-01T07:55:40Z

Can't say much more than has already been said. So far my favorite of the games! Kudos! Graphics, music, concept, theme, all great! Could slow down or change to easier enemies first, then ramp up the speed and add shooting aliens. Or don't change a thing, because it is great.

(only nitpick thing is the text should say "because of your size" instead of "cause of your size." It just made it a little hard to understand the sentence).

Train World by mar3k 2017-05-16T05:06:00Z

Fun game! Would have liked some sounds or music. Also would be nice to know when your item has worn down. Graphics were decent for a Compo. Wished there were at least one hidden crate in one of the empty train cars. Overall this is a good start to what could be an endless runner style game.

House Escape by Piotrek 2017-05-12T19:41:27Z

Interesting game. The minimalistic aspect was probably more out of necessity than form, but it was nice. Had trouble finding the plank, and ultimately had to look at the comments to figure it out. Maybe it was the way it blended into the wall, but I had a tough time seeing it.

Like everyone else, I agree this was short, and the progression through each puzzle went quickly once I found the plank.

Sound effect when the key was hit startled me. The ending sound effect was blah.

Super Natural Defense by AfroAnt 2017-05-01T22:16:43Z

@Kilosaurus, what platform are you trying to run it on?

Super Natural Defense by AfroAnt 2017-05-13T20:08:27Z

@canochaba If you plant trees, you'll get more resources.

LOST PLANET(oid) by mrnyarlathotep 2017-05-01T17:49:06Z

I think the fire button didn't work and the character stopped moving...

Actually, I enjoyed playing the game. The fire button could be tweaked to fire quicker, the strafe feature helped some. I liked how the enemies followed me, even to other screens. I did not like the Southern Desert, though. The design on that scene was slow when returning with the key. If there was some kind of way to bypass the turns coming back, or a way to run, it would be better. The enemy was also able to clip through the wall, not sure if that by design or not, but I did not expect it to nearly hit me when I walked by on the other side of the wall. Game did have an original Zelda style which was cool. Liked the enemy kill sound, too.

Would love a review of our game:

Nuclear Treehouse by batmanasb 2017-05-04T00:54:48Z

Okay game, some enemies are too hard to kill. Not as violent as originally judged, in my opinion.

Railroad to Hell by Ferminho 2017-05-19T06:18:57Z

Can't say more than has already been said, but my first run through was horrible and I hated it! LOL. I decided to give it another go, and when I timed my punches just right, I saw the potential in the game. There is something satisfying about punching a monkey in the face as its jumping across the screen at me! I bumped up the humor a star because of this.

Good start. If you decide to do the interior of the train, check out the game Outlaws Level 3 (I think) for inspiration.

Look forward to an updated version...

Banana Grabbers by cptbubbles 2017-05-08T07:55:55Z

Does not have the proper files to run on Mac. Mac would need a .app file (that is really a folder).

Run Cola Run by valiap 2017-05-05T06:16:48Z

Really enjoyed this one. Graphics were well done. Music was nice, if only a bit repetitive. Could not get past one puzzle. Its the one with the empty baked beans can. I did notice a bug in that puzzle, too. If the can goes under the roller, it can no longer jump. I have to kill myself to continue. Other than that, keep up the great work! I did enjoy how unique your game was compared to most entries.

If you have time, I would appreciate you taking a look at our game:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/super-natural-defense

Game ran fine on Mac 10.10.5 Yosemite.

The End and the Beginning by Zitao YE 2017-05-01T07:29:11Z

Concept is cool, not sure how it fits the theme besides being in a confined space. Music was probably the best part of the game, but I believe it is stock. Shooting was too slow, would have like to see the shot fired when mouse is clicked. Holding down the button helped, but still made it hard to beat enemies, especially the rapid fire enemies. I thought I had defeated all the enemies, but got what appeared to be a failed message, and the game restarted. An exit button would be nice, too.

Game has a nice structure, but needs more broad changes to make it more enjoyable. Could use a little more direction to begin.

Meteor Jam by PeachTreeOath 2017-05-08T07:10:23Z

Really enjoyed your game. After reading the comments, I went back and tried using the rocket to shield me, as my only compliant was that the gameplay didn't pause as I was crafting. It helped, but I think having the action pause while in the crafting menu would be more beneficial. I liked the ability to improve my character, and the levels were increasingly more difficult.

Graphics were well done for the person and the ship. I like the flame animation coming from the ship. The ground textures left a little to be desired. Would have also like to see some kind of warning that the red tiles were harmful. Maybe steam or particles of some kind.

Music was good although it did start to get repetitive if stuck on a level after awhile.

Planet X was pretty hard, but I think the hardest part was not being able to see the meteors against the background. Was able to beat it, but without restarting it would have been hard.

Would have liked to have kept ore from level to level, or at least be given an opportunity to improve my character before moving on to the next world.

At first, I wasn’t sure how your game fit the theme, but after leaving my rocket deployed, I realized the worlds did wrap around. It was not noticeable, not sure how that could have been improved to make it feel like it is a round world.

Very good work overall! Screen Shot 2017-05-07 at 11.53.04 PM.png

Bad RNG by FiloGC 2017-05-14T20:50:54Z

Nice graphics. Some reason sound was not working on WebGL for me. Running on Mac 10.12 in Safari. The jump control felt a little too sensitive. I think i prefer a standard jump height each time, maybe you could add a second jump (press the space bar twice). Had a hard time figuring out the objective and who I was playing as, and would have like to know where I was supposed to deliver the batteries. Once I figured it out, then it became a matter of wondering if I missed a battery somewhere as I kept dying quickly. All in all a nice start to a game. Like your take on the theme. Would be neat to have the game progress to different parts of the server (maybe a CPU level or a RAM level in a future update.

Bad RNG by FiloGC 2017-05-14T20:53:22Z

My best score.

Rickshaw World by tobico 2017-05-08T07:20:25Z

Interesting concept. Audio was basic, but at least there was audio! Graphics were also a little basic. Would have like to see some animation with the rickshaw driver. Like a lot of comments, I would have loved to rotate the camera. It would have also been nice to have a timer for some of the passengers. Have the amount of money received decrease the longer you take.

Great start to a game.

Oversea the Islands by svntax 2017-05-15T07:02:55Z

Interesting concept. Fits the small world them somewhat. Sound effects were kind of fun. Kind of had the felling of a Sim City when you place a bridge. The graphics were okay. I think having a random world generator would be cool, too. Seems like the graphics could be put into some kind of algorithm that could spit out randomly generated islands and sharks. I also think if getting the people off the islands to a certain place could also provide more of a challenge. Mechanics of the game are there, it has some good bones, would like to see where this project could go.

Tiny World Defense by IanMorrison 2017-05-01T20:28:26Z

Hey! Really liked your game. The graphics were well done. Liked the sound effects, felt like an 80's arcade game. I also thought the concept of the world shrinking was clever. Controls made it a little hard to maneuver, and I found it hard to aim accurately. I would love to play in first person, if at all possible, in a future release. Great work!

We also made a world defense game, and would love your thoughts: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/super-natural-defense

Game works on Mac 10.10.5 - Yosemite, btw.

House 0.1.0(top down shooter) by thelonelynug 2017-05-11T06:43:17Z

Original version worked, but there were a lot of bugs that made it unplayable for me. The updated version would cause my browser to stop responding when I attempted to enter the house. Running MacOS 10.10.5 Yosemite in Safari.

Not So Small by CodeChomper 2017-05-15T21:10:11Z

This is one of my favorite games on Ludum Dare!

What I liked:

- I like the backstory and that nature just wants to poop on you for doing your job. - The graphics were minimalistic, but well done. - Liked the way the next level unfolded and was randomized, this added to the replay value. - The high score mechanic was also a nice touch. Made me want to keep playing! I liked how one person couldn't easily spam the high score list.

The stuff I noticed:

- The bird poop was a little annoying. I didn't mind trying to dodge it as I was chopping down a house (?), but when it stayed on me and drained my health, it was frustrating. I found jumping right before impact would help to bounce it away from me. The poop should have an immediate effect, but then disappear after impact. There were a couple of times where it even got caught at my feet while I was running and eventually killed me. - Music/sound wasn't working for me in Safari on Mac 10.10.5 Yosemite. I was able to get sound to work by running it on Firefox, but it caused the game to lag significantly. - The random level idea was great, but it would have been nice to have a consistent amount of enemies on each level. I went through three levels one game before finding another enemy. I think you could still randomize it, but have a more consistent threat each level. This would even high score chances, IMO. - Minor bug, but if you chop down the title screen tree, you can fall off the screen, but then you can't quit. - I do love the high score list, but it would be nice to know what my last score was when I die.

Again, a great game, definitely something to hang your hat on. Look forward to your entry next time!

BTW, 1600+ high score!

Naughty Gnomes by gurkenlabs 2017-05-01T08:34:12Z

Unable to play on Mac 10.10.5. Get error:

"The Java JAR file 'naughty-gnomes-v0.1.jar' could not be launched. Check the Console for possible error messages."

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-05-01T08:25:08Z

Nice concept. Definitely brought back memories of King's Quest. Also nice to hear some original music. The beginning of the song was a little abrasive with the metallic instruments, which changed the mood for me when I returned to her planet (would like something softer. Timing was too quick. Second time through, I didn't waste any time and I still missed the ladder. Would love to see an expanded version of this game where different types of planets pass overhead.

Good job! Mac version worked on 10.10.5 Yosemite for me!

World Battles by Thinkofname 2017-05-01T21:38:18Z

Unable to get game to work in Safari on Mac OS 10.10.5. Was able to get it to work in Firefox. Interesting game. Did not quite understand the objective at first, but once I started flying, kind of figured it out. It would have been nice to know I could place more guns around what ended up being a ship. When I figured it out, I couldn't find a safe place to stop flying and add more guns. When I did, I was swarmed and found it really hard to land on the pilot seat to press E. Got some good bones, with some tweaking and better graphics this could be a lot of fun.

Like the graphics. Music was beautiful. Not much as far as a challenge, some grammar mistakes, but the game does have heart and a good message. I started to tear up in the last door. Thank you for bringing awareness to a terrible disease.

AstroCats by kipelovets 2017-05-08T07:59:55Z

Mac version opened on macOS 10.10.5 Yosemite. Just didn't have anyone on my LAN to play against.

FoodCo by Rucoon 2017-05-01T21:25:49Z

Unfortunately, game does not open on Mac OS 10.10.5 (Yosemite). Cannot verify with newer versions of the operating system. Check to see if there is a "development build" option like there is on Unity (not sure what you used, though).

Would love for you to check out our game, though, and let us know what you think:

(did not rate as I could not open)

Tiny Planet by Matt Fabius 2017-05-12T20:16:34Z

Game crashed multiple times for me as well. Once when I was trying to move multiple people into the rocket on the first level, then when I tried to move a crew member through a fence. I'm running it in Safari on MacOS 10.10.5 Yosemite. The concept was neat. I wish I could use the arrow keys or WASD to rotate the world. I also didn't like having to right click to select. I feel like if I could just left click on a crew member, it would be better. Tutorial was a very nice addition. Where were the sound effects or music?!?

Kanjo by Kataware 2017-05-09T06:41:13Z

Intro worked fine on Mac OS 10.10.5, but at the end, the game stopped responding. Would have liked a way to skip the intro, though. Would also like to know the controls.

Still Waters by mihaylovartem74 2017-05-12T20:36:27Z

Pretty hard. Ran out of water. Did not see a way to replenish the water like fish, but maybe that was by design (need to ration). I had a hard time keeping up with their demands, and it seemed like they were not satisfied even after just eating or drinking. Maybe make the people working use more energy, hence need to eat/drink more; the people resting shouldn't get hungry as fast.

Graphics were awesome. Loved the water. Music was nice and sound effects were decent.

We would love your thoughts on our [game](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/super-natural-defense), too!

Mad Gods by Norseware team 2017-05-17T17:52:08Z

Good concept, but no challenge. I just kept putting my money back into my population until I reached the limit of 300, then unleashed the earthquake, which dealt the most damage/score. When I summoned the UFO, as soon as it abducted some citizens, I got about $1000 back. I don't think that is working as expected.

Overall an interesting type of game, falls a little along the lines for Black & White. Needs more challenging elements, otherwise it feels like a sandbox game.

Scored 52000 before I killed all my population (on purpose) to end the game.

Also, audio was not working. Downloaded the game and am running it on Windows 8.

Finitely Big by gemcc 2017-05-20T06:37:45Z

This "game" felt more like a platform for a deep philosophical message, and more importantly, for a good song. I did not rate the game very high in most categories, because it just was not very robust or complete (6 hours will do that). The screen was too small for my big TV screen, and made it hard to "hear" the message.

I did rate high on the music, but had to drop a star due to the drums not being synced right with the melody (latency issue? see if you can use quantization next time). Loved the music otherwise! After the game was over, I left the window open so I could hear the music while I wrote the review.

Sentient Duality by CabbageCrow 2017-05-20T05:13:37Z

Interesting concept. Definitely rated your game higher for innovation. Didn't realize when in wave mode, you could pass through the first blocks. While in particle mode, I had a tough time moving. Nice start, needs more content. Maybe some kind of scoring system or high score to see how far you've progressed.

SmallWorld by arg410 2017-05-01T07:41:35Z

Fits the theme very well. Similar in concept to our own submission. Like the concept, but kept running into a problem not being able to plant flowers. Not sure what the final objective was (not sure the author got that far), but the general idea is there. Would like to play a more polished version.

Classical Conditioning Cooperation - [CCC] by AwesomeAlliterationAlliance 2017-05-12T20:43:36Z

Wish I could play your game. The concept seems neat and the graphics looked cool. I'm running a Mac, and the html links don't work in Safari or Firefox. If you compiled a Mac build, I'd be your guinea pig (pun intended).

Insufficient Data by lord-bobyness 2017-05-16T04:47:02Z

Nice unique concept. Unlike @ashdnazg, my favorite part was the “tap random keys to type” aspect of the game. Really liked how the game started small and then got expansive. I just sped time up and spawned everything quickly. Only got my technology to 15% or so. Not sure if it matter. The ending was awesome. Loved how the computer sounds slowed down as it died.

Thought the game was humorous, would have liked to rate it high for humor.

Ahoy! The small world of Captain Seastruck! by JayBeeArr 2017-05-12T19:57:25Z

Good start to a game. Would have like to see a reason to move my boat, I ended up just staying in the middle and shooting the fish as they spawned around me. There also didn't seem to be an objective. I kept shooting fish, but there was no score or endgame. Maybe you could have had them come in waves. Would have also liked to see some variety in fish. Sound effects were pretty basic. The music was nice, but too short.

Keep it up, though!

Come check out our [game](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/super-natural-defense)!

Natural Killer Prototype by kr4ft3r 2017-05-01T07:09:16Z

I can confirm, no Mac download, only PC. Try to compile with a ".app" extension. Graphics look great. I also like how it relates to the Theme. I'll try to play it on a PC.

Den by La mecanique du plastique 2017-05-01T22:15:36Z

Fun game, left me wanting to play more. Love the graphics. Controls are unique, not sure I like the click and drag mechanic, but its nice to play a game with just a mouse and a mouse button every once in a while.

Recognition by maysick 2017-05-20T05:40:56Z

Really enjoyed your game. The graphics were well done. There was some nice bits of humor sprinkled throughout. Liked the mechanics of being able to build on the planet. Kept pressing the wrong arrow, expecting the green part to move.

I think some sound effects would have been nice. I also didn't know what KJ meant at first. I figured out the second time through that it meant energy level. If the KJ was attached to the energy number it would be a little more obvious.

Good job overall, though.

The Curious Adventures of Ant, the Inebriated Ant by tdennist 2017-05-08T07:45:06Z

Pretty fun and funny game. Graphics are okay, and not too bad for a compo. Did not hear any sound effects, might be my Mac. Physics were frustrating at times, and I was not exactly sure what I was supposed to be doing the first time I played. Finally figured out the green shinning area was not hostile, and was able to beat the first level. I didn't like how easy it was to fall out of the world, but never die.

ARR World by Simon Rahnasto 2017-05-05T06:40:14Z

The game looks great. Sound effects are also great as is the music. Sid M Pirates is one of my favorite games, and I felt a little bit of that game in this one.

Might just be me, but the game felt too difficult to start. Every other ship is hostile, and when you're battling one ship, you could have two or more others battling you at the same time. The compass is also hard to read, so I'm not sure if I was just in the wrong faction. Controls were also incorrect, I had to use Tab to do crew management. Home base should also be a safe harbor where you are unable to be attacked. Would like more than one cannon on each side to start, too.

Your game definitely has some parts I really did enjoy, but because of the difficulty, it was not as fun as I hoped.

Food Force by Kinjin 2017-05-01T08:02:29Z

Tried the web version, but it was really laggy. Graphics are cool. But was overtaken by a germ really quickly. Like the idea, though.
