@drury the inner zip is the OSX export, and I just decided to package every version (Windows, OSX, and Linux) into one zip to make it easier. Also, I use windows 10 now, and it ran on both my computers and another one with win10 when one of my friends played it. Maybe you need a 32 bit version? I'll upload one of those. Also, make sure to extract the first (outer) zip!
The gameplay is fun, and I loved the enemy and weapon variety, but I do have a few complaints.
Honestly, I don't even know where to begin. Your blatant depiction of violence and murder are quite troubling, not to mention completely inappropriate. Your decision to create a game that encourages killing and the use of guns is not only insensitive, but distasteful. Quite frankly, I am disgusted, and I don't think you comprehend how traumatizing this sort of experience could be for any child or average adult who hasn't been completely desensitized by the media. Your omission of any sort of name for the "enemies" (or are they just innocent civilians? They could be for all I know) downplays the brutal nature of combat and portrays violence in a very unrealistic light, which I find offensive. Your decision to resort to using senseless violence in such a manner is, to tell you the truth, simply pathetic.
Please stick to family-friendly games like Bortman next time, where only stupid, useless pigs with no feelings are killed.
Oh cool I got it working. Thanks!
Honestly I have to agree with stevenjmiller here, the main problem with the game is the depiction of violence and murder.
I mean, the backdrop uses such contrasting colors and is so detailed/noisy that some targets are difficult to spot and murder violently. I'd advise using less saturated/contrasting colors in ground tiles, especially in the 7th level to make it easier to brutally combat innocents (all of which are shooting back at you).
Also the use of guns is frankly quite disturbing in its impact on my crappy CPU. Got 5FPS in the last level at times, to tell you the truth the lack of optimization here is quite offensive.
Also beating the final boss and having it play the first sound effect in the game almost made me jump out of my skin lol
@stevenjmiller I can't believe you'd slander me like this! If you check the Mob.gd file and/or the mobs folder, every mob has a unique name! (admittedly that was dumb on my part and wasted so much time, but gawd damn it, it's there and you better believe it!)
@drury who the heck do you think you are beating my game before me?! Also, I haven't fully playtested the latest balance update so maybe I made it too easy... idk, I'll have to check.
Protip on beating your game: even though machine gun does no damage, if you find one that shoots fast enough it essentially works as a bullet shield. If you keep shooting the boss with it you'll have a much easier time dodging his attacks. It will take a while but you won't get hit.
@drury ah ha! there is also a bug where if multiple bullets last hit a mob, it counts every bullet as a kill! And yeah, what you said is true, but it's also very slow because machine gun bullets do so little damage!
edit: hotfix2 fixed the bug!
That is a very creepy tree! The fact that it mixes 2D and 3D makes it kinda creepy aswell. The gameplay is pretty fun! Well Done!
Nice game! :D. I really liked the sprites, animations and the 3D walls! I died with the boss :(
Well after playing a while through the game I can say that I noticed that it's the first game you've made (at least for the Ludum Dare, I think) and so what I have to tell you is that I found the gameplay completely fine and I loved the way the camera worked when you move but, the problem I had with the game is that it lacks a bit of personality and "soul", it feels like emotionless because it starts with no background story, description of the characters nor anything that gets you to immerse into the world of the game (plus the lack of music also doesn't help with this).
So my humble opinion is that I suggest you that next time you should try something a little bit easier to work on but that it has it's own thing that makes it super special. That said, I do congratulate you for participating and encourage you to keep getting better at game development, hope my opinion is of some help for you!
Really simple, but well made game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation [video series](https://youtu.be/2umBRLlsy2g), if you’d like to take a look :)
Okay game, some enemies are too hard to kill. Not as violent as originally judged, in my opinion.
Nice game. The variety of weapons is good. It could be a bit more fast-placed, though.
I like the walls; reminds me a lot of Teleglitch. Maybe should make it where you can keep the weapon you have into the next level. The bosses take forever to kill without a good weapon.
Fun game. I'm assuming you were consciously making a Nuclear Throne clone from the name. Might want to look at that title and note the recoil and screen fx used to really give the guns some punch.
I'm not sure it if was an issue on my system (since no one else mentioned it), but the pace of the game was very slow. Also, maybe the started gun should suck a little less ;)
I loved the explosions! Shooting the enemy bullets to create my own safe zone was satisfying. Also, good job on all the bullet patterns! This is one of the aspects I see neglected most often.
I really like the idea of destroying bullets with your own bullets. I kinda wish the game had more of a focus on that so it would encourage you to do that more often! Usually I would just fire at the enemies non-stop until they died...
Also, for an action-oriented game like this, I would have liked to be able to move or potentially shoot a little faster. Even with the machine gun things felt kinda sluggish.
Overall though, I enjoy top-down games like this, so I still played it through to the end and enjoyed it. :) The boss was especially a surprise!
I was wondering how this fit the theme until I got to the boss on level three. Very funny. I thought this was a pretty fun game, nice job!
I felt really touched by the dialog. ♥
A lot more fun than I expected it to be. Some sound/music would've really put the icing on the cake. Nice work!
Not exactly my cup of tea but seems to be working well. The mechanics are easy to understand and there is still challenge and variation to keep it interesting. Also very interesting effect to get those "3D" walls.
Cute and fun little game you got here. I like the perspective view with the giant black pillars obstructing the sight line. That made for some interesting game play.
You should have opted out of the sound rating, though, since there was no sound in the game - which could've made the experience more engaging. I would also have liked some indication as to what kind of weapon I was picking up. I did not know their properties, so I just stuck with the one that had a continuous fire rate... but, it did seem to kill the monsters slowly.
Good work, and a fun 48 hour game. Keep it up!
At first I was like: Well, this is pretty mediocre, let's move on to another game. But I kept playing for a bit and it got much better and the gameplay mechanics truly came to fruition. It became more bullet-hell-y and intense and I really loved the fact that you can choose your playstyle with the weapons. I chose Instagib :) Also, the obstacles give it some kind of tactical feel. I enjoyed this way more than I initially thought I would, good job overall!
@erkberg Thanks for taking the time to figure out the game! I've gotten so much flack from people who don't understand the weapon mechanics. I too prefer the instagib (or as I call it, the sniper). I took the time to balance all 3.5 (+0.5 because some shotguns are also single shot sluggers) weapon types but due to the bullet collision and probably just overwhelming nature of bullet hell, most people assume that machine guns are the only viable option. Oh and there is a small chance I nerfed shotguns a little too much...
Hey this was a neat game. It feels a little repetitive, but I got a chuckle when the boss recognized that I was fighting it again. Gameplay was a little slow but fun. I'm not quite sure however how it fit with the theme given. Still, impressive work for 24 hours!
If you like, please take a look at the game I worked on for the Jam, you can find a link to it in my profile
Hey, you beat me in fun. Also, I just read through some comments, I didn't realize this was your first game. Great work and welcome to the community!
I'm going to pretend I had more to say so you won't notice that my comment posted twice.
@batmanasb The first game comment was referencing the @giusex27 comment in which he said "I noticed that it’s the first game you’ve made (at least for the Ludum Dare)." I guess he never played Bortman.
@stevenjmiller I must have misread the first part of their comment... welp, guess I've gone full circle! (beginner => top 200's => top 100's => beginner) Honestly, I blame starting a full-time job and the long wait for Godot 3.0 for making me lazy. Sorry folks, I promise to have my priorities in order by LD39, and in 3D this time around!
