LD38 — A Small World

For The Love Of Money by KunoNoOni 2017-05-03T11:37:59Z

I quite like the graphics, reminds me of classic MS-DOS games.

I found the game-play a bit slow and tedious, with many of the challenges repeated many times in a level without adding much new at each step, and a severe punishment (in time wasted) for missing anything. Especially on the levels with moving platforms, where it takes a long time for every platform to come to where you need it, even if you play perfectly. I do sometimes enjoy hard games, but I want to be able to try again right away when I mess up. It would have been nice to have the platforms synced up, so that if you follow the correct route there will always be one available when you need it.

The limited number of lives adds a challenge, but also discourages experimentation. How about instead: allow unlimited lives, but have a special ending screen for a perfect run.

The player not moving with the platform felt to me like a bug rather than a deliberate design decision, since it doesn't match what happens in the real world. Maybe you could make the platforms look like slippery ice so the player doesn't expect to grip to them?

Good on your for trying a console-based game! I think there probably would have been less friction if I could have selected my options from a menu rather than typing each thing in, though. Auto-complete was nice but didn't really work when everyone is called "Lord Something" or "Sir Something".

I did feel like I really wasn't sure what I was doing for most of the game. It would have been nice to have a tutorial that walks you through the different actions and how they affect the game.

The Morix Colony by Somnium 2017-05-07T03:37:58Z

Fun and surprisingly addictive game. I think the chances of recruiting a new colonist might be a bit low, I finished my game with every upgrade applied but only 4 workers alive.

A Tower in the Mists by sorlok 2017-05-07T03:45:57Z

I'm gonna skip reviewing as I'm really not a JRPG fan and can't do it fairly.

I enjoyed the background story, and the combat system is interesting. I think it would have benefited a lot from reducing the length of the explanation dialogue, and allowing the player to discover the system on their own.

I did find it quite confusing the way the side of the screen the player is on switches around, and for most of the game was looking at the wrong box for my stats. I think it might be best just to follow convention and keep the player on a single side of the screen, or otherwise make the stats box for the player look visually different to the enemy stats box.

Submersible by kleinzach 2017-05-07T03:29:33Z

I really enjoyed exploring the sea, and got a strong feeling of being in a submarine, looking forward to seeing this in VR! I loved the multicolored coral on the seabed, I think this would be great with a bloom effect added to really make it shine in the spotlight.

Lovely game, the way the music and background both ramp up as you progress is excellent. The camera is also great, how it moves around to give you a good view of the direction you're moving in.

The only issue I had is that I got a bit stuck with the large circles. It would be good to have some kind of visual indicator when they're partially activated but need an additional hit.

Small World Collider by tylerraz 2017-05-07T03:49:58Z

I enjoyed seeing the special abilities of all the different planets. I think the game could use some balancing work, it felt like I was at a huge disadvantage to the computer when there was more than 1 planet on the screen, since the computer has twice as many paddles. Maybe the paddle speed could be increased?

50ft by 50ft (or How I Died In Space) by RockhopperGames 2017-05-03T12:12:40Z

Impressive work for a weekend, and some really nice writing. I think this fits the theme perfectly, and it's an interesting story that I haven't seen in this form before. My only feedback is that it would have been nice to see more connection between the happenings of each day. I would have been happy to have fewer choices on what to do each day, but which were more connected together by a narrative.

Beautiful little game, and the setup had me laughing out loud. Nice music, and top notch modelling on the freaky-looking fishes.

Itsa Pixel! by damnscout 2017-04-29T12:26:06Z

Nice concept! I like that the colors all have unique shapes for accessibility. I found the level where you need to match the target shape too hard for me, I think it could benefit from adding some kind of warning indicator and sound just before the target changes.

The Witless by pogo 2017-04-29T12:03:56Z

Very nicely executed! I love some of the visual effects, like how after you go through the portal the world around you is blurred. I feel bad about needing to check the guide for the last puzzle, since I did consider the correct solution but dismissed it out of hand.

Save Our Tiny Planet by Blackasaurus 2017-05-07T03:15:48Z

I like the way the caves look and the parralax background. The speed of movement was too much for me and gave me motion sickness, so I'd like to see that slowed down, maybe with the player moved further to the right to compensate.

Gold N' Steam by juan 2017-05-07T03:10:35Z

I like the green terminal style graphics, and the system of moving boxes around. I think it could benefit from adding some kind of peril or goals that force you to move faster. I was able to make just one very long train and complete the game easily with no risk of crashing.
