LD38 — A Small World

Hoy!

Graphics are really clean, but the game mechanics are quite difficult to grasp: I just managed to complete the 4 first stages, but i am stuck at 5, and i have no idea what to do (tried to link all atoms, but looks like i am supposed to do more than that obviously....) Maybe throwing some pieces of advices when you're struggling would be great. Otherwise, imo it's quite difficult to wrap your mind around the concept ( you can't even look at the solution at the end as it disappear really fast).

Quite interesting game, but making it more accessible and intuitive would be a good and interesting way to improve it: make people learn about chemistry with a game is indeed a cool idea !

Plonat Atek by s-ol 2017-05-03T17:30:56Z

I just love these osciloscope things, it just blow my mind everytime I see what you can draw with these things! Sadly, the emulation don't looks so great as it shiver quite a lot, making it hard to see what is happening But there the same problem with other osciloscope visualisation projects, so it's not really relevant to point this out: It looks great on a real one for sure.

Very original project, i really want to learn more about all of these sound programming stuff now :D

Plants World Wars by juaxix 2017-05-07T21:49:18Z

Pretty much the same for me: there's no real game here, but it's quite mesmerizing to see the trees grow on the planet. Otherwise I think I didn't get why this flower is stalking me all the time: it's just trying to spiral around me, and bloking my way. Sure it's quite pretty to see this ivy-spiraly path, but it was quite anoying to see this thing following me for no reason.

But still interresting, wonder what it could looks like with some more content and polish thrown in!

Bored scientist by KennysPineapple 2017-05-06T12:41:34Z

Very short and basic game, sure, but it's running smooth and would be quite enjoyable with some more content.

One thing to keep in mind: make sure to give some kind of feedback to players when you get hurt/ when youre hit connects. Could be a sound, a small knowkback, a quick blink, a screen shake.... It really make the difference as it makes the mecanics more satisfiying to use.

Great work anyway, if you keep working on it, make sure to get the basic mechanics done (understand: satisfying to use ==> as a player, I want to feel powerfull slaying these damn lava-slugs!). Imo, you should not rush for content, and focus on making the game feel good to use.

Galactic Dwarfare by jirrev 2017-05-06T13:51:17Z

Hoy!

Great entry with very clean graphics and gameplay: Nothing much to say, besides that the game is a bit too easy to be interresting: it's very snowbally, and the AI is quite slow to play, so it's very easy to overwhelm it. Still, I like how you have to be carefull when attacking a planet, as it make it's population quite low which is quite dangerous (a real player would take advantage of that, i think the AI doesn't, but maybe i am wrong)

It's really fun to see the whole swarm of small spaceships heading to a planet to conquer it, defnitly a great idea (even if some trafic-jam happens from time to time, it's quite dangerous for you in fact...but it could be an interresting defense strategy ==> try to delay the annemy swarm by sacrificing some population)

But anyway, a solid concept that just need some more extra challenge to be fun!

Caelium Alpha by jishenaz 2017-05-05T20:25:13Z

Hoy!

It's quite nice visualy speaking, but I feel like it miss some features to be really interresting (just spend 10 min max, and i think I pretty much done all that as to be done )

My main concern is about the camera: I would love to see the whole think from a top view for example, but it seems you can't really do what you want here. Make the player able to rotate the system would make the whole thing less "rigid" (you can move, but you can't look where you want, quite annoying...)

Ofc, making a small menu to chose the nature of the planet, and where you want the orbit, or if you want the planet to have rings ect would be great. (well, in short, just more tools to play with ^^)

It's still a very interresting project, don't know if you want to make all this thing respect physics laws (that could be quite fun to do :D) or just make the player able to build is very own solar system (the way he want things to be). But in both case, you definitly got to empower the player with more tools to make the game interresting: the core mecanics are here, all it needs is some more content!

Dregumes by stoz 2017-05-05T19:50:15Z

Hey!

Just spend half an hour playing the game, loved every minutes!

Graphics are great and very original, the sounds gets the work done, and the music is also quite enjoyable: obviously, much work as been put in there, well done.

I liked the upgrade mechanic: simple yet effective. The first run is quite hard, but once you get the firsts upgrades, you can start to "snowball" the whole game, wich is highly satisfying. The difficulty is quite well balance, even if some time, you just stack mallows and use them all at once. You then spend 10 sec in "big but slow" mode (the real ennemies becomes those spikey balls then, not very interresting...) wich is quite boring imo. I think this mecanics could become more satisfying to use if the big mode duration was shorter (understand, expending, then switch back to normal very quickly after that). Imo, this would make the player feel more powerfull, and make him focused on what's fun: dodging for some time, then blow those damn birds off the screen!

Great game anyway, I hope you get a bit more comments next week, it really deserve some more attention!

Looks like the link is broken (on my side at least), it just throw a 404 error everytime I use it. Try to fix it asap, i think i'm not the only one having trouble playing youre game :D

That One Small World Town Building Simulator by TRGoodhue 2017-05-07T21:36:38Z

Hoy!

Quite cool entry, made me smile a lot :D

It's fun to see the game snowball, incomes come slowly at first, but ramp up very quickly: I only miss the fact that this money is just here to... errr... make even more money I guess ? That's the main problem of the game imo: it start very good, but you don't have any real choices do to.

"just build some houses, then some markets, then some factory, then..." could resume the game quite well for the moment. Well, it's not a problem when you have some stuff left to build, but when the map is full, it just becomes a waiting for the money (to upgrade the factory/market, wich is useless at this point).

In fact, it's too linear to be really interresting, there is pretty much no challenge for the player ==> you can't lose the game!

Maybe you could do something about that using the fire station for ex: (sometimes, fire starts in the factory, if you don't spend money to invest on firestation, you'll lose yore precious factory). Well, I think you get the point: give the player meaningfull choices to do, otherwise it's just a number race.

Don't know if you composed the music, but they are quite catchy by the way !

Snow-globe Tank Duel by Berbecarul 2017-05-06T13:17:05Z

Hoy!

Just played two rounds, here are my thoughts:

You have to give more feedback to the players: as an example it doesn't feel good when I fire. There is no sounds, no particles... ==> Playing a tank, i WANT to feel powerfull!

The main issue is that the vehicle feels like it's a toy: would be great to hear and feel the engines, otherwise it just doesn't do the trick.

I also think that the turret is too slow to turn, as the level is quite small (with narrow streets, ect...), it's mostly a melee fight with the bot. So you have to react quickly, but the turret prevent you to aim as fast as you wish.

It's quite surprising to find pretty much the exact same problems here than in my previous LD entry ( you can have a look here if you want to understand what I mean by this: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-36/?action=preview&uid=110831 )

The point is that a tank is quite clumsy to drive, and it just doesn't fit well in some game systems. I fell like you wanted to do a quite fast-paced game (seing the quite small and narrow map), where you want to use cover, dodge the ennemy bullets ect...But a tank doesn't fit this role well: it ends up being quite static and frustrating (you can't keep a constant DPS while moving, as you won't be able to see where you go).

Otherwise it's working smoothly, and the graphics are OK (with more content and polish, it would look quite good I think). But remember, you have to make sure that the "core" gameplay feels right and coherent before anything.

Small Planet by ZebraInFlames 2017-05-03T20:30:47Z

Hey, nice small arcade game, with a cool old school atari game vibe.

I fell it’s quite tricky to aim, as the ship is turning very fast, and the fire rate is quite low (but well, maybe I should just git gud at it, don’t know). Making the plane controlled with the mouse could be a simple solution to make the game a bit easier to use.

Also, the vertical component of the level is too small imho: I was always afraid of hitting the ground as it stops you, and going too high makes you an easy target so it’s not a good idea to do that either. (maybe decreasing the size of the planet would solve the problem)

I think it could be interresting to add some mechanics to reward the player for using these two “dangerous zones”. Maybe a speed boost when you’re near the ground (something like “use the extra speed to escape a tough 3vs1 fight, but be carefull not hitting the ground doing so”). This would make the game more interresting and dynamic from my point of view: just imagine 3 ennemie planes chasing after you at highSpeed, could be quite exciting!

Lost almost every time when i played 4vs4 (seems I’m a terrible team mate…), but I could spend some time looking at some AI fights, it was quite hilarious sometimes ^ ^

Anyway, as others, it’s a quite solid game concept: it’s simple and fun, while being hard to master.

Gold N' Steam by juan 2017-05-14T10:43:14Z

Hi guys, thank you for giving your thoughts about my entry! It's cool to see that it's interresting to play, even if it's just a proof of concept at this point.

@wildmusketeer : " I think it’s possible to complete the entire game with just one train, which would be less fun". That's a major problem at this point, as you can pretty much break the game by doing so: with one train, you can't lose, and it's boring. Actually, I didn't want to "force" the player to deal with more trains (understand, spawn a train every while). I think it would more be interesting to just make the player realize that it's not the most efficient strategy.

@ddrkirbyisq : "I do think that the clicking to change train direction felt a bit clumsy though. [ ] being able to click on one of three buttons would be better?" I think it would be a good idea with small level (like this one), but I'm afraid that this would become a mess with something bigger (just imagine having 20 buttons, it would be quite awfull to deal with imo)

@kleinzach : "I recently played a lot of Mini Metro, so its cool to see things seemingly inspired by that" It's quite funny that so many of you find a Mini Metro feel to it, as I didn't played this game a single time. Well, just going to add this one to my TODO-list then :D

@ryte2byte : Thank you for this advice! Adding sound to a game really makes the difference, that's true. Before LD, I focused on improving my coding (a bit too much maybe). Now, learning to make sound and music is my next objective (I planned to get a MIDI keybord soon, to really dig into it)

@dragonzlay : Yes, this happens from time to time : you can cut a train in half by switching the arrow: The wagon doesn't follow the main engine actually, so you can make them living on their own by doing this. But all wagons are linked with a spring contraints, so it becomes weird when it's happen (ofc, fell free to check the sources if you're interrested in this). But I already got a solution to that!

@jishenaz : What's your configuration? I didn't try to run the game on another pc for now, it looks quite annoying.

Again, thank you for all your feedbacks, it really helps me a lot!

Confined by Kryptique 2017-05-03T19:46:54Z

Hoy!

A shame you didn't manage to make the entire story, the game stops just when it starts looking interesting: I feel quite frustrated, as I want to know the full story now ahah

Didn't manage to open the two doors in the corridor, don't know if I could do that...

Anyway, quite charming graphics and music, you did great on that imo: you managed to make the game quite lively and appealing (even if it became a bit laggy when you switch between rooms, but no big deal, really)

Small bug found I guess ==> when graphics are put on "fast", it's really hard to make the text vanish (feel like the game is struggling to receive the input), but it's not happening when you put the "fantastic" preset...quite weird.

Now that you have the graphics mostly done, I think you should work hard on finishing it: things were just becoming interresting. And by looking at the "ending room", it's quite obvious you were not running out of ideas on this project.

So Fell free to tell us if you manage to complete it, as I really want to see the whole thing now.

A Small World by KRP 2017-05-02T15:06:18Z

Hoy!

Pretty good graphics and sounds, but game mechanics feel a bit off imho

As others testers, the controls aren't precise enough, and moving the character around is quite frustrating (very slow and the jump is quite short, same for the gravity grab).

I managed to go near the end just wandering on the planet and solving puzzle, but I pretty much broke the game at a moment ( two pieces of the white ship just "weld" together in a strange way, pretty weird ahah ^ ^)

Besides that, it still enjoyable to play, but you should care more about controls next time.

Precious Cargo by CMLSC 2017-08-04T15:21:50Z

Agree with the other comments: really nice pixel art and ambience! It's quite difficult, but also quite funny :D

My main concerns: 1. It lacks clarity sometimes: what comes to my mind is the gunship ==> the projectile just blend into the stars, it's really hard to see. Also, the punch feel a bit disapointing ==> maybe add a screen shake or another sound when it connects ? 2. A double jump mecanics would fit the game very well imo (or maybe an upward kick?) 3. rng is a bitch sometimes, for real ^^

Otherwise, it's a great entry, especially for the compo, well done!

Station 5723: Reactor Down by Archimagus 2017-08-04T10:47:43Z

@alext-design : remember that your materials will never look right without a proper ligting setup, the one you used make the whole level feel a bit flat imo. I'm used to make the all scene with a sort or tinted white color when i am making it : it allows you to focus on lighting. Actually, if the scene doesn't look right in plain white, there a lot of chance it will do the same with textures and materials. And don't hesitate to tint your light colors: we rarely use pure white lamps in our house, but rather softly orange or blue light ==> white lamps are boring ^ ^

(In 3d rendering, it's called a clay render, like this one: https://evermotion.org/files/EVRprfolio/b974b7338e5d3ed5471fb8d82a29c486705305af.jpg )

Otherwise, it's working pretty good, it's quite easy to figure out what to do, even if some interraction aren't really clear on the graphic side (what can I / can't interact with? It's not always easy to figure it out, you have to click a bit randomly...)

Microwavo by guest253 2017-08-02T13:14:40Z

Hi!

I must admit I don't really understand what i am supposed to do, I keep geting "game over" screen again and again with no clue on what i'm doing wrong...Maybe a small text explaining the whole thing can be made?

Do colors have an importance? Are you supposed to click the point? Or to drag and drop it away maybe? well, guess you get it, it's really confusing! :D

Lola's Barkade by A-Flat Miner Studios 2017-08-04T10:26:10Z

Cool 80's vibe, atmosphere and music, graphics are great!

like n.feofentov, I think there could be some improvement on graphic clarity.

Otherwise nice entry!

OxenOut by Dragwa 2017-08-04T15:55:31Z

Great graphics and ideas: (all these dead astronauts were scary)

Still, I don't really liked the gameplay in itself, it's quite slowpaced and the player is quite difficult to control properly (that was the objective i guess...); Others seems to appreciate, but well, it's not my cup of tea.

Great entry otherwise!

Thank you for playing and rating!

"Don’t ever distribute a Linux build in rar! "

Don't know much about linux actually, sorry if i've done something wrong. I'll be carefull to choose the right open format next time ;)

"I’m not looking at 170 MiB sources, it sounds scary."

hehe, I know it's a big one: i just put the all thing in it (understand code, blender files, textures, unity project ect...). It may be unpractical but anyway, I prefer to give access to ALL the "sources" of the graphic part: The coding part is not that interresting to be honest (not much going on, and unity take care of a lot of things anyway), what's more interesting imo is the mesh files from blender or even textures. These files are quite heavy, but you can open them and find the high and low resolution models, this way you can understand the whole thing.

"why didn’t you go for the compo?"

Just didn't had the time to do so: simple as that ;)

Save The Day ! by juan 2017-08-04T17:13:21Z

@local-minimum Don't know how the itch-app work at all, I suggest you to download the game and run it the "good old way"; I am going to investigate during the weekend though, if it doesn't work for some reason I will find it out!

Save The Day ! by juan 2017-08-21T16:58:51Z

20+ ratings O_O ThX a lots to all of you guys!

@frogcheese : " I was also a bit bothered by the fact that I couldn’t see the entire ship on screen "

Could you, please, give me a screenshot of your problem? It sounds like a scene scaling issue on your screen, that's quite embarrassing, for sure...

@easy82 : "Very nice entry, simple but fun, I just wish it wouldn’t be instant death when you hit an asteroid, but damaging the ship hull instead. I like the mini story you’ve written, too bad the pilot can never succeed…"

it's not an instant death if you use the "moSpeedButton" (spacebar). I forgot to write it inside the game itself so maybe it wasn't obvious to hit that button, my bad! (The rescue team is a lie)

Fast Fission Reactor Simulator Playground by stackboot 2017-08-02T13:05:41Z

Hi

I find the game quite difficult, but I think that was just the objective. Maybe make the bar drop down more quickly, as it is, it's quite boring visually. Maybe it's possible to make something more satisfying to use on this side. That neutron thing fits the theme nicely, it was a good idea!

(and rememember, rating others game is best way to get more feedbacks, feel free to comment if you have some time!)

QUAWARU by Valentine 2017-08-02T10:08:55Z

Hey, it's working quite well, even if I find the game quite difficult (too much colors for me i think, i got overwhelm after some time)

Got 2240 at my best.

Graphics did their job, but adding some fx and sounds when blocks disappear could really improve the feel of the game, thats the main thing to work on next time imo.

The Power of the Game by simonlary 2017-08-02T12:43:37Z

Hey, cool game indeed! Puzzle were just right, nothing too difficult, but some levels gave me some troubles, liked it!

That's great to get a story on a LD game! But I could see the twist coming quite early. Don't know if it's the same for the others, but if it does it could be funny to trick the player with this, or to make it is less "obvious" to find.

Anyway, great entry! I think I will try to make something similar in the future.

(And yes, the best way to get visibilty is to comment other LD games, so fell free to spend some time doing so!)

RCR by martinloki 2017-08-02T10:28:50Z

Strongly agree with both of the comments above, it's hard to make good gameplay and good graphics on such a short amount of time: it's better to focus on the first one in general.

Controls are quite a pain to use, and add this to the fact that this is a puzzle game... Well, it would make it difficult to love, even if the puzzle in itself may be good.

My advice for next time would be to make the core ideas of your game first (in this case, winning and loosing conditions, then moving boxes around, it think these two things are the essentials bricks of your game)

==> do you need a moving robot to make the game work? Well, I don't think so, actually just moving blocks with the mouse would be easier to program in the first time.

Maybe this video can give you some insight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvCri1tqIxQ

Anyway, i wish you good luck for the next one !

Lithium by bveeramani 2017-08-04T10:17:52Z

Loved what you've done there: great atmosphere with relaxing music and color theme.

I've completed the whole thing and find it pretty easy (even if some level took me some time to solve, mostly the 2nd world with the ice). I really liked the levels with the ennemies, and how you can trick them with the tp, wish they were more level like these ones!

I still think that you guys should set the gameplay objects (like keys, doors, ennemies) to more vibrant colors, or to make proper items to represent them (batteries were OK, but I kept forgeting what was that pale yellow cube for example)

Other problem on my side, I don't really liked the controls, as it's sometimes hard to "feel" in wich direction your player is going to move with some camera angles (maybe restric the angles, something like 45°,135°, 225°[...])

Oterwise, I liked how you manage to give each level a unique light and "weather" setup (like the small black smoke particles in the fire level)

Nice entry!

Power! by Martyxgames 2017-08-02T09:55:29Z

Hey!

Same as other, it's supposed to be fast pace, but when you start reaching highscores, you can just stop playing for 20sec before losing all your power. It lack some mechanics to make the game really interresting.

Otherwise it work well, the good square is easy to track thx to the colors you choose.

hey! Just replying quickly: the sources are coming.

I am uploading 2 folders: 1 is code only, the other is my full unity project and blend file.

The last one is quite heavy, so the upload is longer than what i've expected, sorry about that!
