Hi dunin, thank you very much for the feedback. We'll investigate the issue and come up with a fix :)
*Edit: We've just published an updated version that supports Arrow keys for controlling. Although this is kind of a work around, this should at least make the game work for you.*
Fun little game, the wind up on the cake is a little long for my personal taste and hurts the pacing of the game for me and the controls feel a little stiff for lack of a better term. Graphics are beautiful and fun! With such beautiful art and mood/sense of place i kinda wanted the game play to be a little point and click adventure, i wanted to explore and interact with he world.
Unable to play on Mac 10.10.5. Get error:
"The Java JAR file 'naughty-gnomes-v0.1.jar' could not be launched. Check the Console for possible error messages."
That's pretty good! Nice graphics and I like the idea. Music seems a bit out of place, and sometimes it's too long to wait for them to cross the trajectory.

I played through your game, and thought I would write you some feedback. It's really lovely, and I really like the extra surprise menu point, it fits with the game. So right from the start I got sucked into the universe. The style is neat, and well executed.
My biggest thing about the game, is that it somehow needs more to the gameplay, I found myself waiting a lot for the gnomes to be in the right spot where I could attack them. Which wasn't really Challenging for me. That was a shame because I got a little bit bored. When you win and the sound plays the sound was very scewed which my ears didn't really like, so I think it's a place where you could improve a bit. The music was nice though.
Gratz on finishing this game for the jam, that's a big thing in itself :) I really enjoyed the game and I hope you can use my feedback for something.
Original and fun idea, gameplay is little bit slow, but overall is solid :) I like it
Graphics and audio are really good!
The gameplay was pretty fun, but felt a bit stiff to me. Maybe allow the clown the move while charging his shot? Or having 8 directions to throw instead of 4?

Is there a version without Java?
@sun-wukong short answer: No. Longer answer: The LITIengine is a 2D Game engine written in pure java8. Creating games with LITIengine means creating games in Java. @tacomabert are you absolutely certain you have java 8 or later installed? We've tested on mac and the program simply not starting sounds a lot like an incompatible java version.
Cool art, easy to learn, but I've never heard of that engine before. Is it a new one? @gurkenlabs
Damn kids man! hahaha, graphics of this game are pretty cool along with music and sound effects! Theme is not very related, but you have a lot of fun playing :D. By the way, what is this new engine @gurkenlabs that seems interesting?
The art is amazing, I just love that pixel art style :smiley: Sound effects and music fit nicely, just the gameplay wasn't really engaging. Waiting for the gnomes to walk into my line of sight was a bit boring and, because of a cool down on throwing and blowing the horn, even tedious. Without the cool down I'd be able to scare the gnomes into the direction I want them to more easily.
Also as @dev-dennis mentioned the gnomes just take too long to walk to where I can hit them. As solution I'd propose fixing the gnomes paths instead of randomizing and adding some kind of chain reaction element to the game. That way, it can always be guaranteed, that the maximum wait time is one or two walk cycles and the timing aspect would be even more important because you could chain together hits on multiple gnomes which all have to be at the proper spot at the right time. So maybe you could have a gnome carry a cake and shoot it straight ahead when hit or you could have a balloon that spreads the cake even further when hit. All in all, good assets, improvable gameplay :)
@scornz @furazin We've been writing the engine ourselves for the last three years and have only recently published a version on Github. Still lots of documentation to do, but we've achieved quite a lot with it :)
@somethinboutgames actually I like your idea with preset gnome paths a lot, because randomness doesn't really suit a puzzle game too well. Also, awesome ideas for power-ups!

How a game about beating annoying children.. I mean, gnomes, can be bad? Anyway, really good entry. Cool art, fluent gameplay and refreshing experience. I'll also give that engine a look.

Omg. :D I loved it! The sounds were amazing. The victory sound was really funny and the kids noises gave it a personal touch. The Graphic was good. And the mood was very nice. After every level i was pleased about that victory sound. Very good Work! :)

Tip: If possible, when the player is to shoot and the bar reaches the maximum, stay in it for a while, then cancel the shot.

It was nice that the collision wasn't pixel perfect because they moved around so much so that would probably have been unfair. Having no access into the rooms where the people were but having to aim at them from openings on the outside made it a lot of fun and strategic. And having the horn to get them moving was a really nice touch!
I can agree with previous people that the wind-up was a bit slow. My biggest problem (which nobody else seems to have reported, so I wonder if it's Mac-specific) was that I kept getting stuck in walls and couldn't move for a while. Was especially frustrating on the last level where I'd fought hard for a couple of minutes to get the last person to the spot where I could aim at them and they finally went there but I got stuck on the way there for like 20 seconds and I missed the opportunity. :'c

The pixel art is nice, and the audio sets it up! Like others said, waiting for the gnomes make it a bit lacking in the actual game department, but overall solid work! (Did not get the relation with the theme much though!)
Thank you for creating this game. The clown is nasty and would actually scare me, than make happpy=) The graphics also are satisfying and go together with the theme of the game, old-school children party :D
Amazing pixel art! The animations, the typography, and all the visuals are very nicely designed. I don't know if it was my computer (i7/Windows 10) or if it was intentional, but the game seemed to run really slowly to me. I like the puzzle/shooter aspect to it, and how you have to wait for the gnome to be in the 'window' to shoot them.
Hi, thanks for fixing the keyboard bug. It's a cute entry, even I think it needs level design improvement to become more challenging... (also sometimes, I feel that the aiming square isn't in the right place, but maybe it's me..) The victory sound is perfect!
Looks and sounds great, but the challenge was somewhat lacking. I was hoping for a bit more necessary conservation of pies and having to cause the gnomes to bunch up, but it was still fun. Great visuals
Great pixel art ! And a nice music too. Overall it was funny and interesting, but I didn't really see the puzzle aspect of the game and the horn seemed to have a quite random effect... Also I liked the "surprise" in the title, very funny ^^ ! Good job !
Nice work with the game, I loved the art and it controlled really smoothly. It had a great sense of humor, however I feel that the music could have been a bit more upbeat to fit that humor. Other than that the game was really quite confusing at first, but I soon got the hang of it and really enjoyed it. Nice Game!

Really solid game! Graphics and sounds are great and consistent. The game-play is fun and challenging, but not too hard. Minor complaints: Intro felt a bit too long and doesn't work great on dual screens, but that's a luxury problem ;).
This is definitely on my list to revisit when I can get the JRE Working on my computer.

I liked your game a lot! Had a blast playing it. (partyhorn) I don't know if it was intentional but at the last level there were parts outside of the screen and it was hard getting the gnomes to come within the view of the game.
I really loved your game there! A very fun and different entry here, with very good graphics and humor in there! i just didnt found much use with the partyhorn, but maybe because couldnt find a good strategy to use it neither. Anyway, very fun game, great job!!
Loved how you used your own engine for this. Overall it was pretty solid, the only complaint I have is that there should be an option to cancel a cake throw, but maybe that's part of the challenge. Would love to see more levels and possibly items as powerups. Music and graphics were great too, nice work!
Nice job with this game. The graphics are nice and the concept is interesting. Although there is a tutorial, I couldn't understand the controls at first. I like the humor in the game but I can't see the theme here in any way. Overall was a good game to play, and if you did it with your own engine, that's really cool. Congratulations.
Though I really liked this there was few things could use some rethinking. Overall busyness in game screen, there is some much going on. Maybe zoom in on the actual gameplay area. Also while most of graphics are in low res pixel art style, some aren’t (like fonts). This really stands out and breaks the coherence. Gameplay itself is pretty solid. Overall great job!
Not bad, kind of wished the pace was a bit faster though (gnomes sometimes take to long to be in a sweetspot)
It seemed like a nice game to play but for me it ran too slow... I'm using a Surface Pro 4 btw. Maybe it's because it has trouble rendering the game at machines native resolution (2736x1824). Maybe a windowed mode would help. I only have it with this game, other games (made with Unity for example) have no issues.

Fun and strange.
Likes: The movement mechanics of the gnomes, the pixel art representation and design of the character, level layouts were thoughtful and increasingly challenging.
Could improve: I found the repetitive "teehee" sound funny at first but trying after a while.
Overall though, pretty nifty and funny game!
