LD38 — A Small World

A Bloody Small World by blinry 2017-05-01T14:44:36Z

God, this game is adorable! I loved it!

Great audio design, great soundtrack, great graphics, great narrative voice- it was all very good. The only suggestion I can even think of giving is to add some directional arrows to show the flow of blood so that it's a bit easier to see, but apart from that I loved it.

Really well done! :)

Calor by stevenjmiller 2017-04-26T21:50:35Z

Well, it's a big game for 1 person in 48 hours, that's for sure!

Unfortunately, I feel like the scope for this one was its own biggest disadvantage. The tutorial honestly wasn't great. It's best to teach the player how to do by letting them do it than by telling them. I found myself rounding off paragraphs as I waited to get into the game.

Unfortunately, even having read the majority of the tutorial I still wasn't clear on what the *goal* was. I knew what I had to do, but not why or to what end.

I'd be interested to see you expand on this, either way!

Naarrow by Ace17 2017-04-26T15:26:30Z

Okay. Wow.

What this game doesn't have in graphics, it makes up for in... literally everything else. When I first clicked on this game, I had low expectations due to the graphical fidelity. Lower still when I found myself wandering through identical room after room, opening the same door over and over again. I honestly wondered if this was some kind of debugging setup left in the game.

Then I got to the last room in the series, and the room was different. My first thought was "oh, random level generation went wrong there?", then I realized that all the other rooms were persistent and had their own set of challenges.

It was at this point that the game really "clicked" for me. I reevaluated the graphics and began to realize how dissonant and *alien* each sprite was.

I would believe you if you told me that these graphics were chosen purposefully, because they fit this game perfectly.

I haven't even touched on the inventiveness of each level and the satisfaction of completing each puzzle, despite it being so unceremonious, nor the haunting soundtrack.

This game is genuinely incredible, and I urge anyone reading this to play it. Wow.

War in the Sky by ZYXer 2017-05-17T13:46:33Z

Beautiful graphics! I enjoyed it! :)

Bullet Wrap by Chao 2017-05-02T12:35:01Z

It's pretty good! It's got a very intriguing core concept, and a very good interpretation of the theme. I'm really bad at it(best score of 56) but it's really fun!

I would agree with @Veralos that free aim could be a nice addition, but as it is it's still quite a fun game. I would also suggest a score counter being presented on-screen during the game itself, not just after you lose.

Great submission, I enjoyed it!

Polar Protector by AlexHoratio 2017-04-26T15:30:15Z

@Shodanon

Thank you! Yeah, I agree that I should have made the health bit a bit more clear. Basically, if the aliens/eggs/avocados/rocks touch the poles, they begin to deal damage to the planet.

@avavt

There *should* be a "Best:" field on the in-game UI which serves as a high-score counter, though if it's not working... oh dear. Thank you so much for playing, though!

Polar Protector by AlexHoratio 2017-04-26T17:58:49Z

@takusan

Thank you so much! I do love Godot, it's especially good for prototyping which comes in very handy for Ludum Dare. I'm really glad you enjoyed my submission, though!!

Polar Protector by AlexHoratio 2017-04-27T12:03:08Z

@richard-michael-smith

Thank you!! I'm glad, I did a few iterations of the music and I am definitely relieved to know it came out well!

@move127

Thank you!

@veralos

Thanks so much! Yeah, I was planning on having the enemies show up as blips on the minimap, but the time constraints were a bit too tight for that! ^^

Headroom by PhilStrahl 2017-04-26T21:36:44Z

Damn, would love to play it but I have no DX11 support :(

A Small Earth by Skywilly 2017-04-26T15:51:13Z

Well, it's something.

I can't say I'm a fan of politicizing games like this, it feels cheap. As Shodanon said, it did cause an emotional reaction, but for me at least it was primarily one of disappointment.

Curses and Coconuts by testlab 2017-05-01T15:17:26Z

Woo!! First LD game I've seen with a native Linux build, even though it didn't work for me so I emulated the Windows version>.>

The game itself is not so bad, the graphics are cohesive and have a style, and the audio design is actually very good despite the lack of music. I found the gameplay itself a little lacking; it could have done with some variety or a win condition.

Regardless, I will never not like fighting skeletons on a desert island.

Curses and Coconuts by testlab 2017-05-03T18:20:31Z

@testlab

Hey! I'm running on (and developing on:wink:)a kind of fucked Debian installation, so I don't know if it's your fault. I remember it gave me a problem with a missing dependency, which sounds like something that my borked packaged manager is responsible for. Thanks for caring, though!

Supernova by Veralos 2017-04-26T14:06:54Z

This is a very nice game! The character sprite is quite charming in particular. The central premise is also very good.

If I were to give one piece of constructive criticism, it would be to add more variety to the levels, perhaps in the form of more obstacles, combat or more objectives. Of course, given the Ludum Dare time constraints what you have already created is pretty great in itself. Also, I don't know what you used for the soundtrack but I enjoyed it!

This is a good entry, and if you do decide to expand on it, it would make at least *me* happy.

Naughty Gnomes by gurkenlabs 2017-05-03T18:17:01Z

Wow, this is really good, especially for a Ludum Dare game! Really well done!!

Moped Mayhem by Meenners 2017-04-26T16:07:06Z

Very cute, simple game with an endearing art style! I like it! If I were to make one recommendation, it would be for a bit more variety and perhaps make each round last a little longer. For a Ludum Dare entry, this is acceptable. Well done!

Lead the Ants by matita 2017-04-26T15:46:31Z

I agree that this game is very intriguing conceptually. I would suggest slightly speeding up the player ant, as the game feels a little bit sluggish as it is. I also agree with the suggestion for more varied terrain.

Very interesting idea!

Cookie-World by Loktor 2017-05-01T11:51:16Z

This game is quite adorable.

It's a simple premise with some great audio design, and the graphics are quite nice too.

happy cookie/10

Legends Of Block by sagarpatel25700 2017-05-01T11:19:13Z

There's definitely a really good core here, even if I'm not a massive fan of how it's been developed.

You definitely *absolutely* should have either changed the shoot key to be a keyboard button, or allowed the mouse to let the player shoot where they want to shoot. Your current system is artificially difficult, as the player doesn't feel that the controls are satisfying. They aren't being tested on their skills as much as their ability to adapt to the awkward controls.

However, I don't actually want to ruin your day because this game does have a good core, as I said. After adjusting the above, I would recommend making the player die on-hit if you're worried about difficulty, give the enemies less health, make the bullets faster and give them a knockback.

If you do that, I think this game would begin to reach its potential.

Johi Farm by AVAVT 2017-04-26T14:17:43Z

I do agree with the prior suggestions that there could be a glow around interactable objects. Apart from that, this game is very enjoyable. Difficult as hell, but definitely enjoyable. Also, you have no idea how much I love the bug roaming around to the bottom right of the plant.

Nice work! :)

Small World: Drill Destruction by Bob The Seagull King 2017-04-26T21:59:31Z

This is actually a very fun game! Ludum Dare submissions are expected to be a little rough;)

The art style is great, though I'd clean up the aliasing on the font a little bit. The explosions are satisfying as hell and the game itself is more addicting than it should be.

Also, I'm not sure if you're aware but if the drills land on you, you gain about 3 kills in one go. Just thought you'd like to know!:p

Either way, this is a very good submission. If you won't say it's a good game, I certainly will!

Seagazer by Turncoda 2017-04-26T22:09:53Z

This is a wonderful game. It's simple enough to trust the player's intrigue, for a start. It's visually beautiful. The moment of realization is amazing.

You've really made my favourite kind of submission- something small, thought-provoking and wonderful.

Saving this to vote on later!

Slightly Angry Max by Takusan 2017-04-26T18:10:04Z

This is a really enjoyable game, well done! I'd be interested to see you expand on it. One suggestion would be to make the player character move a bit faster, and the bullets faster to compensate. If you're going for an action-packed vibe, I'd almost always recommend making everything faster.

Also, needs more screenshake

Afterbirth by xxDOOMbox 2017-04-26T14:47:41Z

This is a wonderful concept with adequate execution. The animation itself is very good, though I felt that the gameplay was lacking. For a Ludum Dare entry, this is tremendously understandable so don't take it too hard!

I would like to have seen a more fleshed-out combat situation, with the umbilical cord perhaps reaching a little bit higher. Also, I definitely agree with @avavt that the baby was lovable.

Would like to see this concept expanded, good entry!

I'm In ! A Small Room by Nee Bunn 2017-04-26T18:18:21Z

Not bad, though I think that the rooms could have used some variety and flavour. Perhaps for this kind of game, a narrator a la *The Stanley Parable*? Also, I'm sure you know this but it could have done with some sound effects:p

World Collector by TomBishopSPG 2017-05-01T15:10:48Z

Not bad, but I'm a little confused as to how the game works. I understand I have to place the mines but I'm not sure why or what they do.

Maybe add a little instructional section to the description?

AstroGunner by KabalaTrance 2017-05-01T11:29:13Z

This is pretty good! The audio design is definitely quite good. I think the game would benefit from slightly larger projectiles, to account for the times when the player is slightly rotated to one side when aiming at an enemy due to the controls. Or even a little bit of lock-on when you're missing by a few units.

I very much like the background, and I think that the powerup system is quite good. I would recommend some kind of shaded background to the UI on the screen, but that's not super important.

If you expanded and continued to work on this, I think you could make something quite nice!

WRLD by x227man 2017-04-26T15:54:48Z

Hmm, are you sure the page is set to public? It gave me a 404 when I tried to open your link. :/

Den by La mecanique du plastique 2017-04-26T22:16:58Z

This game is beautiful! Sound design is also very good, but wow- the graphics are really amazing.

I was a bit lost for a while before figuring out the scream mechanic, and just like everyone else I got stuck on the last base.

Extremely strong core though, would like to see you expand on it!!

The Curious Adventures of Ant, the Inebriated Ant by tdennist 2017-04-26T14:30:00Z

Not bad! This is by far the most inebriated I've ever seen any ant be.

The game is pretty good at its core concept. There are a few hitches, namely the lack of sound and the level design. The level design in particular felt.. unfair. On the first level with the lilypads in the water, I climbed over the mushroom to the right, and then climbed up the wall and fell off the map. I restarted and went to the left and climbed over that mushroom and... off the map. It was only then that I saw the next level pad in the water.

If I were to make a recommendation, it would be to make sure that it feels fair for the player. If the player is at risk of spending 3-4 minutes wandering around or struggling to climb a certain obstacle, they should be able to feel rewarded when they make it. Something as simple as adding deadly spikes where you're not meant to be could fix that.

To paraphrase Rami Ismail, polish your game. If you make a gem, your first instinct shouldn't be to build a house around it. In this case, take maybe 2 or 3 levels and just focus on those.

Hope I wasn't too mean!^^

Tumblin' down by Shodanon 2017-04-26T22:23:20Z

Hmm, this is an interesting concept but I'm not entirely sure it lives up to its potential. Lacking a real over-arching goal and effective balancing, I'm hesitant to sing its praises as much as I'd like. However, the sound design was pretty solid.

I hope you return to this game, I'd be very interested to see the results!!

One Giant Leap by AmnonLevi 2017-05-01T11:35:08Z

+1, would appreciate a Linux build.

Having said that, are you sure it's meant to be ***600MB***?! That's huge!! I watched the gameplay and it does look fun, but I genuinely can't imagine what could possibly be making the file that big. Usually if a game is Windows exclusive I can run it under a kind of emulator, but this file is simply too big. Needless to say, I won't be voting.^^

LD39 — Running out of Power

The Power of Hove by bentglasstube 2017-08-03T09:32:54Z

Menu screen looked cool, but the game crashed my computer trying to start it up. :(

Power Defence by Crazy046 2017-08-12T15:56:02Z

Woo! Godot submission! :)

Star Slammer by AlexHoratio 2017-08-03T09:09:13Z

@amrojjeh

Re: Con 1. Shit, you're right, I entirely forgot to fix that. It's a very small technical fix, I don't think it's breaking guidelines(?)

Re: Con 3. Speed does matter! It takes a sample of the player's speed in the last 3 frames and picks the highest one to calculate the damage dealt to the star.

Re: Con 6. Again, I should have made it more clear. You're meant to ram a significantly larger star to the right, indicated with a white arrow. This would win the game.

Thanks for the detailed feedback, though! I agree that it's not my finest work.

Star Dodger Elite by emkiusz 2017-08-06T19:47:06Z

The idea was pretty good, but you could have expanded on it more. Also, using the mouse to control the joystick was fairly difficult.

Good luck with the post-jam version!

The Sorcerer's Apprentice by donvermo 2017-08-03T09:49:20Z

Not bad! The movement is super jerky and I'm not a huge fan of that, but the graphics are gorgeous. I'd support you making a post-jam version as long as you're planning on making the movement a little tighter! ^^

Zapper by Sylvestar 2017-08-03T09:36:58Z

Very cute! Nothing too ambitious and you pulled it off well. Sound effects were a little harsh on my ears, but nothing too problematic. Nice work!

Energy Drones by Asofi 2017-08-04T10:40:42Z

Christ, that was hard! Super fun, though. Graphically gorgeous, soundtrack was good, sound effects were good, and the gameplay felt hard-but-fair. There was a kind of "knack" you had to find to each challenge.

Really well done!

Scale of Life by ilya_kozlov 2017-08-03T09:42:26Z

Super adorable!! I really enjoyed playing this one. Could be adapted into a pretty successful mobile game if you choose to continue it. Nice work!

The Color of Days To Come. by TheOneThatNeverWas 2017-08-10T22:50:06Z

Legitimately the best LD entry I've played thus far. Really well done!!

VamBot by ModalModule 2017-08-03T09:39:15Z

Interesting concept! Definitely needs the ability to turn left since that felt a little artificial, but overall very nice. Well done!

LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

DROP by Syrapt0r 2017-12-04T18:14:19Z

Dear lord, that's difficult! It's a nice fun concept for a puzzle-platformer, though I think it could use some nice indicators to help make it clear how collecting coins impacts movement. Maybe some kind of meter at the top or side of the screen would help it to feel a bit more impactful. Also, the rope swings seem to be kinda jerky and I'm not entirely sure how they behave but sometimes they drop me into the lava and that makes me sad.

Chaos Space Kitchen by seano 2017-12-04T18:23:34Z

Pretty good!! I really love the graphics. I think that the premise is really quite interesting and it could be expanded on with some success. One piece of feedback I can give is that I think maybe the hitboxes for fitting the food into the appropriate recepticle could be a bit more lenient as I frequently spend too much time just throwing it repeatedly at the correct piece until it goes in.

Overall, nice job!

Chaos Space Kitchen by seano 2017-12-04T18:47:39Z

@jimbly It's `java -jar chaos-space-kitchen.jar`, fyi

Ominos by differentname 2017-12-04T17:06:23Z

Bloody hell, this gets hard fast! I can't make it past 18 lines...

I think it could use some juicing up as Untitled Studios mentioned regarding things like animations for a line clear. Very intriguing idea though, I would love to see you work on this post-jam. Good luck!!

RougeCell by sparked99 2017-12-04T17:51:13Z

Ouch, that was difficult! I got there in the end, but it took a while. I really like the premise and the gameplay, I think that maybe there should be some variety in the gameplay. I'm thinking maybe enemies which shoot rogue cell stuff at the healthy cells, or maybe power-ups. This has some neat potential!

Voiid by Ace17 2017-12-06T19:31:59Z

Very nice! I really liked the atmosphere in this game, and the graphics were minimalistic yet definitely fit well with the mood. It's been a while since I've played a 3D platformer, so thanks for reminding me they exist! ^^

Bring Your Own Bullets by AlexHoratio 2017-12-04T17:23:07Z

@matthew-roelle Wow, thank you!! I agree I should have added more of a tutorial since the concept isn't what I'd call intuitive, but yeah- thanks again!

Bring Your Own Bullets by AlexHoratio 2017-12-04T18:44:39Z

@differentname Yeah, getting the player to understand the mechanic is probably my weakest point here. The sound effect plays just whenever the circles disappear- in retrospect, I definitely should have only played it when the player clicks it.

Bring Your Own Bullets by AlexHoratio 2017-12-04T18:47:18Z

@jimbly Yeah, there are some problems with it crashing. These are due to the fact that it is developed with the current beta of the Godot 3.0 engine which is a bit unstable right now. Thanks for the feedback, though! Also, the first bullet goes where you aimed before clicking and all consecutive bullets go where your cursor is currently.

Bring Your Own Bullets by AlexHoratio 2017-12-14T15:54:23Z

@jjjjason It was pretty good! Lots of things that took some getting used to but were ultimately very nice to work with- the audio system, the particle system and the ability to directly set some variables rather than use getters and setters(position, rotation, etc). It had a few peculiar crashes, but that's to be expected of a beta.

Definitely something to look forward to!

Fluffy Space Escape by potatolain 2017-12-04T18:41:39Z

Holy wow, you legit made an NES game for Ludum Dare?! That's pretty incredible..!!

As for the game, it was pretty good and had a very nice NES-induced charm. Nice work!!

Kalyuka by soyrandom 2017-12-04T17:56:05Z

Psst, anything ending in *.exe is generally not Linux compatible! Linux executables usually either don't have any file extension, or are *.bin files. Having said that, for any other Linuxites out there:

**Just remove the .exe bit and chmod +x it and then ./kalyuka it, that'll work!**

As for the actual game, the art is quite cute though I find it very difficult. Keep it up! I agree with the addition of an energy meter, it'd help to make it easier to balance things.

EDIT: Also that axe spinning when you hold the spacebar is soo lovable and cute

Quadrilateral Damage by TheMadPangolin 2017-12-05T18:13:24Z

Wow, this gets super hectic but remains super enjoyable! I really like the art style and the premise. It's easy to pick up and understand pretty easily what's going on. Really well done!!

BufferMAN: Hack 80's style! by Akryllax 2017-12-06T20:00:18Z

In all honesty, I'm not a huge fan of the movement or the motion blur/DoF/bloom effects, but this is very intriguing. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how this develops if you choose to work on it post-jam, it's a very interesting concept!!

Lord of High Fives by Nathaniel Tan 2017-12-04T17:20:27Z

I love the premise, but the game doesn't feel as great to play as I wish it would! I feel like the fact the player character slowly speeds up when moving isn't exactly conducive to a snappy gameplay experience considering it's time limited. My best score is 3 friends which I'm honestly quite proud of considering how difficult it is! ^^

The Invasion of Robots by Swifttech 2017-12-04T18:05:00Z

I don't know if I'll ever understand how SFML and OpenGL works so to me you're a supernatural wizard.

It's not bad considering it's SFML and I think we're both aware that it's a little bit sparse, but I would recommend that you remember to normalize the movement vectors along X and Y since I think pressing both the W and D keys actually speeds you up overall. Good luck for next time!!

Purr-suasion by Raziyya 2017-12-04T18:28:18Z

I feel like it could have gotten a bit harder towards the end. The obstacles were a good addition, but I think that keeping an acceptable percentage of cats successfully herded would have been a good idea and then amping up the number of cats to where it's almost impossible to get an actually purrfect game.

That's just an idea, though. I don't know how that would actually work out. Nice work, though!

Chaos Dart by Elodeon 2017-12-04T17:36:45Z

I'm with Sholf regarding the addition of a stamina bar, but overall I really enjoyed this. It felt fast paced and challenging though quite enjoyable. The powerup system was good too, it helped to give the player a short term goal to aspire to aside from the goal of "don't die". I think a score counter would be a good addition to to help reflect the player's progress and achievement in the game.

Once again, really enjoyable!

Jonny; Life of a Procrastinator by Call_me_Nutty 2017-12-04T16:56:41Z

Not bad, but I feel like the gameplay can be difficult to get a solid grip on. The movement is a bit slow for my liking and the input doesn't have any "juice"- things like screenshake and particle effects can go a long way!

Good luck on your next Ludum Dare!

50 Second Apocalypse by superpokeunicorn 2022-04-07T17:16:34Z

Planet Saver by PashaLoban 2022-04-07T17:35:13Z

nice game, felt like a nice environment to play in. i didn't find it particularly challenging at all, but it was fun. :)

IRS'isnt by TheDevAtlas 2022-04-04T22:28:37Z

lol, not a bad submission! using that shader to represent enemy HP was a good idea. however i found the diagonal text on the walls a bit hard to read. all the movements were also very slow i thought and the progression took a while too. also red gems don't yield money? :( or maybe i missed something.

anyway sorry about lots of critique lol, its a cool game :)

Block Wizard Arena by Games_by_Tom 2022-04-06T00:31:05Z

interesting game! i like the way the gameplay played out. i also found a bug where only sometimes, for some reason that i couldn't work out, i can spam-click an ability and activate it multiple times before the camera turns away 😈

Keep It Warm by Fifut 2022-04-06T00:21:28Z

wow... cool game! but it did not feel good to let my baby freeze 😢 5/5 for atmospheric!

Meteodate by DzejPi 2022-04-06T00:51:19Z

wow, that was so cool :D this is probably my favourite LD submission so far!

White Death by Roboolet 2022-04-04T22:17:19Z

Gomma by Tulio 2022-04-07T17:41:03Z

cool game! part of it reminded me a little of "Wik & the Fable of Souls"... really good graphics, the agricultural stuff was quite interesting. definitely agree with other feedback that the platforming was not great tho. :)

Volcanic Dash by tested 2022-04-07T17:24:59Z

veru fun game! the character kinda jittered around a bit, but the platforming was really good + well-designed levels.

Beebs Bump by Beebster Games 2022-04-07T17:11:10Z

wow this was great! :D very very cool game!

Fairy Feeder by recursiveanomaly 2023-01-09T07:54:09Z

Wow! Great game!!! It reminded me a little bit of Insaniquarum, which is also a game I loved :D

KINDA FUN by AlexHoratio 2023-01-13T07:49:17Z

@givit-game-studios What kind of OpenGL issue? I used the Godot 4 beta 10 so I think it could be an engine bug, but I'll see what I can do.

Lavender Fields Forever by Rongo Matane 2023-01-12T03:34:02Z

Wow! Awesome game! Congrats :D

Gogo Rabbit's Trap by JoshuaRabbit 2023-01-09T07:40:39Z

Very cool game lol. After I figured out the controls I had a fun time trying out random things to get different endings. Awesome submission

Happy Piggy Farm 2 by TomatoOmelet 2023-01-09T06:56:29Z

Wow! Interesting! Very tragic  Poor pigs!

When I was playing it, I wished I could shoot through the apples that were already falling. Also, maybe it would be more fun if the jump was faster. But I still enjoyed it :D Good submission!

Well that's... an interesting game. Lol :D

The King's Summoning by strong99 2024-04-29T21:15:33Z

I can tell a lot has gone into this game! It's an impressive feat for a short time. That being said, possibly because of the 48 hour limit, this game is not very functional and quite difficult to play. I wasn't able to beat it, and I also had a bug where I tried to equip a weapon for my recruit and then stopped dealing any damage to anyone ever again. Unfortunately I think without the recruit, I wasn't able to deal enough DPS to make it through in time :(

With a bit more time and development, I can see there is enough complexity worth expanding upon. Thanks for submitting! :D

VOC by cogcomp 2024-04-17T17:56:19Z

Very interesting puzzle!! :O

Summonere by Ace17 2024-04-29T21:22:40Z

Gander and the Elemental Dungeon by burnedkirby 2024-04-20T01:32:41Z

Damn, I wish it didn't end so soon  Cool game!

Think Or Be Thought by AlexHoratio 2024-04-15T08:10:48Z

@absolute-garbage You're right the switching between the boxes is an unsolved problem  Currently you can use tab/shift+tab to move between boxes but that's also not perfect. Thanks you guys for playing though!! :hearts:

Rainsong by CaptAndrey 2024-04-29T21:33:49Z

The summoning sounds were really good. Although the first time the third guy lit up and my speed increased, I accidentally just walked straight into an enemy :X lol. Thanks for submitting :D

Ghost in the Filesystem by Theyflower 2024-04-17T18:30:22Z

Well this is going to take me a while  I'm also stuck on the GIMP/jigsaw puzzle... Awesome game though! :D

EDIT: Made it through! I can't believe I didn't get through the jigsaw puzzle sooner :')

Summon Swarm by Talopic 2024-04-20T01:05:35Z

Very cool concept!! I love the minigame/"main" game duality!

Curse of the Mystical Mushroom by BACON BEAST 2024-04-17T16:36:16Z

That was great! Nothing as fun as spawning 100 mushrooms and watching them destroy the entire map. lol

Spellmancer by DenkiTheGamer 2024-04-17T22:27:40Z

Interesting game! I really liked the controls even though they were very hard to learn. I also encountered a bug on the last level where I fell out of the map, had to press Shift+R to restart, and then I came back with like double speed :'D

MagicSircle Paint by Absolute Garbage 2024-04-15T05:17:45Z

lol, short but a really creative idea :D well done!
