LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Ni by HolyBlackCat 2017-12-05T18:39:16Z

The presentation is pretty excellent! The graphics and audio really work together to give it a nice atmosphere. The idea is pretty cool, although I found the game to be quite difficult and even frustrating at times. Good effort though, and great work for the short time frame :D

Whatever Floats Your Boat by testudor 2017-12-05T17:32:32Z

Awesome idea, and well executed might I add. The graphics were nice and simple too. I did think it became a bit too easy once I figured out how to use the bow, and I think there was also a bug when trying to face a slime that is touching that would prevent you from switching directions. A really good effort though. Good job :)

Jazzy Beats by Moski 2017-12-08T18:05:35Z

The art style is absolutely fantastic, and the music is great. The idea works really well around the theme of the Dare. It would really benefit from some punchy sound effects for when you hit an enemy, but overall a very polished game and really high quality considering the short time frame. Great job! :D

Toutous by ArnoChux 2017-12-05T17:18:46Z

A nice, simple and clear interpretation of the theme. I also really liked the art style, and the "BRRRIIIING BRRRIIIING" was pretty funny. Good job overall :D

GLORIOUS INTERNET POINTS by Ale 2017-12-05T17:47:43Z

It's not often that I find myself playing Tycoons (or Tycoon-style games), but this was a fresh experience. Neat idea, with some funny gags and references (i.e. the Navy Seal copypasta). Overall, really good job ;)

Famous Knight by Lucas Ferrantelli 2017-12-10T13:29:56Z

Great work for a game made in less than 3 days! The art style was fantastic. It gives off a Rogue Legacy vibe. The idea was really funny too, and its really funny how easily you can lose all your fans to one enemy. The controls felt pretty good, and it was strangely amusing to send your fans flying when you dash into them. One of the best LD40 games I've played so far! Good job :D

Quadrilateral Damage by TheMadPangolin 2017-12-05T18:29:06Z

Thanks so much for all the feedback! It's really motivating to see that people are enjoying my game :D

@jay2645 Thanks for the elaborate comment! I did at one point have a bullet decay feature as a matter of fact. Any bullet that bounced around for 10 seconds would automatically be reloaded. I removed it, however, because I thought it was a tad too easy. That being said, I was the only tester before I released it, and considering how many times I played it, I'm obviously going to find it easier than a new player. Also, you should be able to enter fullscreen mode by pressing ALT and ENTER at the same time. Sorry I didn't mention it in the controls xD

@shrapx This was an issue I was having myself, actually. I kept losing sight of the cursor (the crosshair was a last-minute addition) which was a real problem when I needed to lob a grenade at something. I couldn't really come up with a way to make the player stand out more. If I ever update this game at any point, I will probably add a coloured circle below the player to separate them from enemies a bit more.

Last thing: The idea of my game was that "the more bullets you have in your gun, the worse they are when you shoot". I know it kind of takes a backseat to the bullet-bouncing mechanic, but that's the link with the theme.

Hope you all are enjoying or have enjoyed playing :D

Quadrilateral Damage by TheMadPangolin 2017-12-05T19:10:54Z

@antoined73 Thanks for the comment! Firstly, I know the "forcefield" things became alot more annoying than I intended. I'm currently considering making "Super Quadrilateral Damage" after the judging step is over, and if I do, they will be heavily redesigned for that.

Secondly, thanks for letting me know about that bug. I've never had that problem myself, but I'm going to do my best to try and trigger it myself in game so I can hopefully fix it. If I do, an updated version should be up by the end of this week at the latest.

Quadrilateral Damage by TheMadPangolin 2017-12-05T22:48:12Z

@profan Thanks for the comment man. I agree that at times it is quite difficult to take in everything that is going on because of the big bullets flying everywhere.

Just a quick clarification. I should really have added a tutorial screen, but... 48 hours xD

The blue balls are forcefields. From wave 6 onwards, scientist enemies will start spawning. These enemies spawn their own forcefield which bounces around the screen until the enemy that spawned them is killed. If a bullet hits a forcefield, it is forcefully reloaded into the player’s weapon. And because the more bullets your gun has, the weaker the shots are, this means that your bullets will start becoming smaller.

I’m aware that the scientist enemy is very overpowered, and I plan to continue work on this game for an improved release after Christmas, but I can’t really make such a drastic change as to nerf an enemy completely while the LD rating process is taking place :(

Thanks for playing my game, dude! Hope your overall experience was enjoyable :D

Quadrilateral Damage by TheMadPangolin 2017-12-06T20:54:38Z

@regisrquoi Thanks so much for the comment! It's hard for me to argue with that point about the problem with enemy spawns. I myself, despite playing it many times, still make the mistake of walking to where an enemy is right before he lands. I'm planning on releasing a much improved version later in the month once college dies down, so I'll tackle this issue in that version. Music is also something I'm kind of annoyed about not including, but it's being worked on and turning out nicely so far.

@jfraser314 STAY TUNED FOR MORE (but seriously though, thanks for the comment :D)

@Akusan Thanks! The updated release will have a tutorial of sorts. Another idea I've had is some kind of menu where the player can read about each different enemy and boss as well.

So yeah, thanks for the comments, and good luck to you all :D

Quadrilateral Damage by TheMadPangolin 2017-12-06T21:33:34Z

@regisrquoi Sure thing! I also have a YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4Rb_X94ujCpXLkKzDDiiFQ) which I'll definitely be uploading videos of the upgraded version onto.

Quadrilateral Damage by TheMadPangolin 2017-12-09T10:48:17Z

@frederika Thanks alot! I’ve subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to seeing that stream :D

Quadrilateral Damage by TheMadPangolin 2017-12-10T18:13:40Z

@Moski Thanks very much for the comment! I'm working on a much improved version now, and the powerup is probably going to get a nerf.

The Weissman Challenge by CaramelCode 2017-12-05T19:51:07Z

Typing games are quite rare, but can really fun and hectic if done well. This is a great example! With more time and polish this could be a really great game! Probably the most fun LD40 game I've played so far. The humour and technical context really helped this game out too! Great job!

Grooblins! by ahintoflime 2017-12-05T17:56:17Z

WHY IS THERE A CALCULATOR MONSTER OUTSIDE MY WINDOW

Unique concept, and quite an interesting, surreal storyline. A bit too simple, but that's not much of an issue considering its length. Good job overall :)

MEGA by Yetman 2017-12-08T17:58:33Z

Cool interpretation of the theme indeed. The art style has potential. An updated version could benefit from a little bit more variety, such as more enemy types. Not a bad effort overall, though. Good job :D

LD50 — Delay the inevitable

Slime Zone by TheMadPangolin 2022-04-05T19:46:25Z

Thank you all so much for trying and rating my game ^-^ I'm very happy to see people are enjoying it!

@ollie-d Thank you! I did make the music but not during the Ludum Dare itself. It was already pretty much a finished song so I polished it up a little bit and just used that, which is why I opted out of the audio category.

Slime Zone by TheMadPangolin 2022-04-05T23:32:54Z

@chocolat-endive Thank you ^-^ I agree about jumping against blocks. I've been trying to get a decent time and keep having trouble with it myself xD

I think a mechanic where you automatically climb over the top of a block if you jump/fall onto the side of it would make it feel alot better. I'm not sure if I'll make a post jam version but if I do I'll definitely have a look into it.

Crisis Bot by The Great Gallus 2022-04-16T19:07:01Z

A good concept which fits the theme very well! The art style is very simple but comes together well. I found it very easy to pick up and understand what I was doing without needing to read the instructions on the game page. Well done ^-^

ReactorWrangler by Edmanbosch 2022-04-14T23:08:22Z

Cool idea that fits the theme very well! I will say I found it a bit confusing at points and some of the noises - particularly the sound of creatures in the office which was much louder than the others - got a bit grating, and hearing the explanation everytime I started over got a bit tiresome. Still, great work ^-^

Circuits by mira 2022-04-16T19:14:16Z

An interesting concept that fits the theme well! The presentation overall was very well done although the art style is inconsistent at points (particularly the Flappy Bird minigame). Great entry ^-^

Slide Out by TimeTravelHamster 2022-04-04T20:12:53Z

A fun challenge with an interesting mechanic. The art style is cute and the colours go well together. Great effort ^-^

Saviour by Robonaut121 2022-04-17T13:02:38Z

The concept is really cool and fits the theme well. The art style is quite nice but I kept trying to walk on top of ladders since they look like part of the foreground and falling to my death because of that. The movement feels quite hard to control due to how fast everything is, and I found it off-putting that you die the instant you touch the darkness, especially when the camera moves down so quickly when I fall into it. Overall a good entry and with some polish and fleshing out this idea could work really well as a full game. Great entry ^-^

Hydroponica by Cakestorm 2022-04-04T20:02:57Z

Superb visuals, overall mood is chill but the sound effects can be a bit grating at times. It took me some time to understand what was going on, and I think where it succeeds the most is how satisfying it looks when seeds are flying everywhere. Really good effort ^-^

HANG UP! by Jesse J. Jones 2022-04-07T10:28:37Z

I love playing a typing game every now and then, but this one absolutely kills it with the humour and silly tone! I don't think there's ever been a game where you can sell insurance or something to a dog over the phone. Really good entry ^-^

Typing Turmoil by SugarSugarSugar 2022-04-16T19:26:52Z

I always like to try out typing game entries and this was a pretty interesting one. I'm not really sure what the difference is between the different coloured circles, so I just ended up trying to type the characters as fast as possible when they came up. I didn't notice an indicator when I mistyped a character to tell me I couldn't type for a few seconds - perhaps a sound effect, a bit of screen shake and/or a meter/timer that shows how long I can't type for would really help here. An end screen to show my final score would be nice as well. Overall, a solid entry ^-^

Reactor Meltdown (The Simpsons) by AdamJN 2022-04-05T19:05:48Z

A simple concept executed in a really fun and lighthearted way. Makes you wonder how Homer gets through work everyday xD. The only criticism I could think of is it kept making me do the dial turning task back-to-back (I think 4 times in a row at one point) which got a bit annoying. Overall a fun and challenging jam game! Great effort ^-^

Avoid the Drown by NeneChico 2022-04-05T19:12:54Z

An interesting and fun concept which implements the theme very well. I will say the jump feels quite strange and I found that I can mash jump underwater to jump out of it (although it was inconsistent). Good effort ^-^

LD55 — Summoning

Devotion - A fairytale by daandruff 2024-04-15T18:21:22Z

The art is really nice (especially love the use of colours) and the audio really helps set the mood. I like the take on the theme, and I appreciated the walkthrough as I got stuck after I put the book down

Really cool game :3

Lorem Ipsummon by Hugimugi7 2024-04-16T18:06:43Z

The concept behind this is really great, and a cool take on the theme. I also really loved the art style, and the transition reminds me alot of Cave Story which is awesome.

I will say that the level design could have taken more advantage of the premise, but that's always something which could be explored in a full version!

Overall, really nice game :)

Butler! Summon the Imps! by jummbus 2024-04-16T12:42:30Z

This was a super fun one! Art is really nice and I love the character designs. The cutscenes are also a really nice touch, especially for a jam game! The different art and music for each level also added alot of character, and it's just another touch that could easily have been left out to save time, but wasn't.

Really great work for a 72 hour game!

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

The Cavern of Bad Ideas by Jani Nykanen 2018-04-23T17:06:31Z

The pixel art is gorgeous, and smaller details like old-school transitions really make this game feel authentic. It's incredibly impressive to see a game like this written in C for a compo entry. Brilliant work :D

Rythm is Lava by egordorichev 2018-04-23T06:01:42Z

Really nice game for a compo entry, with gorgeous graphics. Sometimes the effects obscure the characters a bit much, but it's not really a big problem. Great effort :D

TRPG Meets GAMES by ccglp 2018-04-23T16:55:01Z

Cool idea, and it's impressive how many different gameplay styles you implemented. I don't know if you plan on working on this further, there are some little things that could be addressed. For example, most of the minigames wait for user input before starting, but the Space Invaders minigame starts immediately, which threw me off immediately. Good job overall though, and very creative. Great use of the theme too :D

Flee, little guinea pig! by tipyx 2018-04-24T08:03:30Z

Nice game, and very original! The guinea pig idea is very fitting too! Great use of the theme. :D

BREAK // HELL by Incredible Ape 2018-04-24T19:29:20Z

A unique game concept with great execution PLUS sexy graphics and music. I won't be surprised if you make it into the top 10! Brilliant work :D

Combo Maker by TheMadPangolin 2018-04-23T06:57:17Z

@bluewingtitan Oh dear, lol. I’ll have to have a look at that. Thanks for letting me know man! @Apples_mmmmmmmm Thanks alot! Hope you enjoyed it :D

Combo Maker by TheMadPangolin 2018-04-23T17:59:40Z

@ROBOWARRIOR1982 Noted. GameMaker doesn't really give you a super fast way to add controller support (at least that I'm aware of). I would be able to do it though, so if I continue working on it I'll be sure to add it. Thanks for playing man! Hope you still enjoyed it on keyboard lol.

Combo Maker by TheMadPangolin 2018-04-23T20:10:13Z

@GettingRekt Thanks man! The enemies I agree were a bit weird. I guess I really wanted to mix it up a bit and got a bit carried away... it probably would have been better to take a Puyo Puyo approach and have you play against stages where a boss character would control the arena, each with their own gimmick, but whatever. Glad you enjoyed it :D

@joqlepecheur Thanks alot! I got used to the noise but with it going off every 5 seconds, I understand it being a nuisance. Sound design isn't my strong suit xD

Combo Maker by TheMadPangolin 2018-04-23T21:00:15Z

@Valden Great suggestion! I'll keep it in mind. I'm tempted to keep working on it for a new version, so I'll give it a try if I do, or at least add it as an option. Glad you liked it :D

Combo Maker by TheMadPangolin 2018-05-01T16:07:01Z

@SecretPocketCat Thanks! Makes me feel good when people enjoy my game :D makes it all worth it.

@DDRKirbyISQ Yeah, the difficulty is probably the biggest issue IMO. Not to mention the enemies are a bit pointless really. Just the platforming/puzzle combination would probably have been fun and challenging enough. The enemies really just make it annoying. And yeah, there's a few bugs in there... there were so many bugs during development that I pretty much called it today after fixing most of them, and I had to release an update to fix a potential crash O-o... thanks for letting me know though, and I'm glad you enjoyed it :D

Platform Hero by Rombus 2018-04-23T21:50:36Z

Rhythm games are real sweet! My only criticism would be to add a bit more of a delay before you have to start hitting the notes just for you to get ready quicker. Nice game though :D

Hyper Beat Engine by hypersnow 2018-04-23T17:52:51Z

Really nice game with a slick, simplistic art style. Nice concept - the beat counter reminds me of Crypt of the Necrodancer (which is a good thing) - although the arrow key boost mechanic threw me off a little bit. The music was fitting, and it was nice to hear multiple tracks across the missions. Great game :D

Type to Win by net3ton 2018-04-23T20:06:39Z

Really nice little game! There's all sorts of interesting mechanics you could do with this. I understand that 48 hours is very little time, but it's a real shame it was so short. Still, nice execution, and a great job overall!

Text Royale: The Ultimate Type or Death Fight by Rob White 2018-04-23T20:22:19Z

Well made, and definitely unlike other Battle Royale games. I did find it difficult to tell what was damaging me at times, and the chat log gets very overwhelming quite quickly. Still, a very good job :D

Typographythm by Radnyx 2018-04-23T20:01:11Z

This was awesome. Seriously, my favourite entry so far, and for a compo game, the presentation is fantastic! I struggled a bit at first, but I got the hang of it fast enough. I was actually ready to play more levels after that hand dude, but unfortunately I was denied by the limitations of the Ludum Dare. PLEASE continue this, for the good of man-kind! Brilliant game, dude :D

Tetriform by magicdidac 2018-04-23T21:36:55Z

Cool idea, and well executed, but the controls are a bit counter-intuitive. I'm used to Tetris games using a generic button like Z to flip the pieces, and down to make the piece drop faster, but in this game it's swapped. Still, good idea, and a relaxing alternative to some of the more hectic games that the jam has to offer. Nicely done

Crane Quandary by Strato 2018-04-24T08:17:29Z

The graphics are very nice, and the puzzles were quite cool! Nice job :D

Tiny Crusader by nilstastic 2018-04-23T19:23:40Z

Really original, cool idea! A bit confusing at first, but once I figured out what I was doing, I picked it up nicely. Lovely graphics and presentation. Overall, a good effort :D

Type n' Jump by Richard N Silva 2018-04-25T15:14:43Z

Great art style! The mechanic is easy to pick up too. I will say the music got repetitive very quickly, but it's really a minor complaint. Good work :D

Rapid Bullet-Hell Blitz Chess by Ismael Rodriguez 2018-04-23T20:55:51Z

The chess theme is original, and the graphics are simplistic but punchy. The sounds work very well too! Didn't really get that I was supposed to grab the flashy ones at first, but I figured it out quickly enough. Nice game!

Shady Cards by Yozamu 2018-04-25T15:02:15Z

The art is really nice, and the UI is well done. It's convenient, and pretty impressive, to see an LD game offer key binding options and the like. The idea is cool, although I found the platforming a bit too fast. A detail I liked was the card throwing attack, which looks really cool and feels nice to hit people with. Good work :D

Zlornko Teaches Typing by katie 2018-04-23T16:20:37Z

Pretty tough, and very flashy! Typing games are interesting, but I've never seen one like this before. Great game!

ZUCCTRON5000 by Pixelh8 2018-04-23T05:50:58Z

A realistic look into the mind of the Z U C C.

In all serious though, it's original and has fitting graphics and sound. Some of the word combinations were pretty funny, too! Good work :D
