Nice game ! (y)
the game looks nice and plays nice, but i don't get the objective. is it all about getting more chips? but how do i know how many i already have?
@jaime-paz-lopes There is no concrete objective as we focused on core mechanics before the rest. In the end we lacked time, that's why we opted for procedural generation to ensure we got some gameplay ready. To know your current money, take a look at the bottom right of the screen. There is a cell with your number of chips for every kind. White = 1$, red = 5$, blue = 10$, green = 25$, black = 100$
Yeah, its a great idea! Playing cards mechanic very suitable for most number of games.
Also, lovely visual style.
I enjoyed the platforming part of the game, but overall it seemed a little fast. The Hold-Em part wasn't working for me though. Overall I thought it was pretty good.
I think the platforming was a bit too fast. I kept loosing control of where I wanted to jump too, its something I could get used to, but dipping the speed a little couldn't hurt. , only other thing was I felt the overall objective is a little lost, but its fun, well made, and I like that the different poker hands give you different power ups :) pretty cool! :) I like the character art and the colours too :) I think adding a more prominant reason to collect the chips would be beneficial.. even just a story anecdote like he needs to save his girl from an evil poker guru :P great work on the menus too and i liked that i could re map the keys :)
@brendan-toy @perfectfitz @ratbird Thanks for the feedback! Indeed the speed may be a bit high; we want to make something really fast-paced and even tend to a hardcore platformer to contrast with many games that feels too slow or easy... But yeah because of how you can climb buildings and such, maybe tweaking it down a little bit could be useful! And thanks for all the compliments!
liked your game, the art is good and same for the U I, liked it keep it up feel free to check our game we hope you will like it https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/incompatible-rally
The art is really nice, and the UI is well done. It's convenient, and pretty impressive, to see an LD game offer key binding options and the like. The idea is cool, although I found the platforming a bit too fast. A detail I liked was the card throwing attack, which looks really cool and feels nice to hit people with. Good work :D
Nice game really loved the platform part didnt really got anything from the poker bcs me is dumb at poker
@themadpangolin Yeah surely some people told us that the speed was a bit too fast indeed. If we can continue working on the game, we'll surely tweak it a bit.
Even if it was our first LD, we really wanted to make things as polished as possible, so your compliments go straigth to the heart!
I really like the art, superb skyline :)
Liked the art, very atmospheric. Game play was a little confusing, but that may be because I don't play poker. Good audio, music matches the pace of the game. I problem I found was I couldn't exit the game once started. You should have a pause menu when you hit ESC so you can get back to main menu to quit. The end user shouldn't have to ALT-TAB and close window to exit
@shockeye Thanks for the feedback. You can use TAB once in game to open a menu with the poker combinations as well as a "Menu" button, which brings you back to main menu, where you can exit the game. Maybe I should have bound this command to ESC additionally!
TAB, got it. Thanks!
Very strong entry. A poker player might argue that holdem hand always consists of 5 cards even when it's a pair but I for one understand the value of artistic liberty:P Other than that one adjective that comes to mind after playing this game is "tight". The controls, the sounds and the feel of the game are all great. It seems like The Adventures of Batman and Robin was actually a very accurate reference. I wish the end goal was a bit more clear but other than that you have a winner on your hands.
Good concept and well executed.
I would like the movement to be slower, as it's hard to not to run into enemies you are trying to kill.
Well done!
Very interesting mechanic, it has some deep so it would work great as a long game. It matches the theme fine, and the art is well polished.
The only issue I found is that sometimes the combinations don't work, sometimes I had a Color or a Pair of kings and the game told me that it was a wrong combination, but maybe it was my fault and I forgot to check a card.
Good entry, think about developing further!
Really great idea to have you play poker while platforming. I love the the artwork and the music. The game is a little confusing if you don't know how to play poker. Also the left and right movement is way to fast/sensitive. It made jumping on platforms very difficult. I think this is a really well executed game and am interested to see how it evolves. Great job.
Thanks for the latest feedback you all gave us!
@anagf I believe that this occured when you tried to pick more than 3 cards from the board to make your combination! You should select at max 3 cards from the board + 2 from your hand, otherwise it will be counted as illegal! It felt a little confusing at first to me because I wasn't aware about this rule, but we had to make things right for those who knew poker sooo... :)
I see! Then it makes sense.
Nice game! The look kind of reminds me of Gunpoint a bit
A very fun game! The atmosphere is good, the game is fast, the music excellent, and the mix is daring but works great! All that's missing is a good story and gangster bosses to perfect it all! bravo!
The art style are awesome. The game is pretty fun, very polished, and the music create a right mood. Good job!
Please, take a look at my game too: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/confessional
There's a lot going on here! As others have said, the platforming is a little too fast to control, but other than that it worked well. The addition of poker was cool, and I like it how the best hand isn't always the right choice. I think that is a clever mechanic, although the countdown timer and things happening so fast means it didn't stand out as much as it should. The graphics and overall presentation was very good, well done!
**EN :** The visual and sounds are great, but the rules of GD are too many and the tutorial is really boring and long, so I'm not sure I understood everything. It lacks any feedback on enemy contact, loss of pv and resolution a turn (poker). The character controler is really cool.
Overall it's still very good work. Congratulations.
Thanks a lot for all your feedback!
@Kaiomoi You may be right, we honestly didn't have a lot of time to spend on the tutorial even though it's essential! We planned to expand it later, but we focused on procedural generation and core mechanics in general. I think it's that kind of game you can get into after spending some time, but since we are all testing a lot of games, the boring and long feeling of the tutorial can only be increased! And of course, thanks for the compliments!
Though both of the different genres of games were working, I couldn't tell how they were actually connected in terms of actual play, besides the theme of playing cards. There didn't seem any motivation to actually play the poker game, as none of the guys want to play with me anyway. They're too busy pacing. And so am I, because pacing seems like the thing to do. It's pretty easy to just dart through the level, haphazardly Gambitting hoodlums for their hard-earned chips. Anyway, some more connection between the individual games would have been nice.
Solid work, I feel the mood of the reference (don't know much about MegaDrive's Batman, but still remember the atmosphere of _Batman Vengeance_ for GBA). Very interesting concept, I'm not sure to enjoy the platforming experience (everyone around is too fast, I think they are a bit nerveous), but I definitely enjoy poker. Maybe it would be better not to play two games at the same time, but instead to play poker in the beginning of each level or as a fighting mechanics. Also, sometimes the game seems to not see the valid combination when I'm absolutely sure about it.
@yngvarr That's an interesting idea, we should dig it a bit more but we wanted both phase to happen at the same time for the mix to be more present... But regarding the combination, I believe that you've picked more than 3 cards from the board to form your combination! That's a poker rule I wasn't aware of before I made the game, but you're supposed to take max 3 cards from the board and 2 from your hand to form the combination!
@jamblefoot Actually you're right, the penalties you get when skipping poker are too low; we aimed for bonuses such as healing, giving money, increasing attack speed and increasing number of card thrown, but the only penalty you get from not playing is having a slower attack speed. In this context, where you just have to reach the end of the level without a lot of difficulties, this only penalty seem to be really light. That's the main thing we want to work on
The music and graphics create a great mood - loved the dark, brooding Gotham City feel! The gameplay is really exciting and really really fast (better take a beta blocker before you play! :) Great to see a procedurally generated world approach used to such good effect. It's difficult to stop playing, because, on the down side, there's no perceptible end-point (very small grouch only!), and, on the up side, it's totally addictive! I would have like to have a sense of how far I'd progressed towards the RHS of the map, eg by means of some visual, even though I never made it (I think...) Thanks for a great ride!
Would really appreciate your feedback on our game Frogger: The Jigsaw: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/frogger-the-jigsaw Big thanks!
@loveapplegames Thanks for the awesome and detailed feedback! I'll make sure to check your game!
Really cool concept! I thought it played well and the graphics were nice. Good job.

Hope it helped? Upon triple aces. Other than that, this game is FAST.
Just when I was finally getting the grasp, firing 5 shots at a time and having a good time:
LD41_2018-05-08_12-14-17.png
If it helps for replication, I bet on 2 Js and 2 As. Just as I pressed the Spacebar, my screen went white and the game crashed.
Anyhow, back to my comments about the actual game. I liked it a lot, with plenty of solid mechanics and a great setting, but marred with no direction since there are no goals (that I could notice, other than reaching the end of the level, which was as simple as just running and ignoring everything else while firing).
While I like the card powering up idea and the fast paced platforming, I can't help but think that, rather than complementing each other, they're canibalizing. While I had fun with climbing up buildings, with a lack of incentive, I ended up not bothering at all later on because I wanted to try to gamble instead. Don't get me wrong. Both mechanics are great on their own, but they would rarely help each other.
The platforming, running and firing felt so good on its own. In the future, consider putting objectives, power ups or something in the middle and at the top of buildings, or put buildings that can't be entered from the side so the player is forced to climb rather than run.
Finally, for the setting. I love the music and sound effects. And the graphics are fantastic. This is very well crafted.
Loved this, but it does feel a bit short on the sides. Here's hoping you can expand on it in the future, since it shows a lot of potential. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really like to see this continue intermingling platforming and cardplay. Keep up the good work! :whale:
@moski Thanks for the comprehensive feedback and the bug report; I'll dig into it! Also I understand what you say about the mechanics as well as things you'd like to see in the future. Those are great remarks, and we of course did not mean to keep the game as is when complete. We've done what we could given the delay, and while we're pretty satisfied with the result, we have no doubt there's a lot of room for improvment and having such a report is really helpful. Thank you
Very good game. I love the combination of cards and plat-former. I had a tough time getting what is going on because the game feels very fast. I love the sound. Good job.
Very well made genre combination with great gameplay. Congratulations!
I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.
I hope you continue with the project.

Pretty interesting take on the theme! I liked that it feels a lot like video poker, but it took me a bit to figure out what was counted as a valid hand (it didn't accept single pair hands that I had, and two pair was indicated as "pair" sometimes?). The platform part felt a little bit too easy - I could just run to the right and spam cards to collect chips. Poker is where the fun is at!
Very interesting take on the theme; I love the graphics and the music, however it's a bit to fast for me, and I found the game concept really hard to grasp.
You wrote one can read the signs on the road to get more information, however, I didn't find any signs... maybe I misinterpreted something.
Wow, what a great game. Nice graphics, mate, I like it.
Wow, cool game, I will definitely try to play it, I love this kind of game :) I generally love everything related to gambling, and poker and such games, maybe I'm addicted, I don't know :) By the way, I have long been looking for a good site where you can play poker, and at the same time withdraw money to your account. And here I came across this site https://www.u12x.com/แทงบอล/ . Now I play in the evenings and win some money. I wonder if I'm the only one here who likes to play poker, or if there are other people like me? If you are playing, let's sign up and play together somewhere. I would be interested to hear your opinion. And the game looks very nice.
