37,850.

First noticed you guys when you made IceMan, that crazy jump-dodging flip-upside-down game. Now I make a point of checking out your offering because you reliably deliver a tight, to-the-point arcade action game that's really tough but has a mental layer to the design that makes me think.

I love the way this one lets me create my own problems. I experimented with randomness and systems of patterns, with constant streams and short bursts. At one point I was like "hrm I don't seem to be punished by failing to get blocks!" But then I realized how I quickly run out of space if I don't. I was stuck at about 15k for a bunch of tries until I felt like I had peeled back the layers, and got a more solid score.

Oh and one tiny touch I was glad to see: I don't get insta-gameover if I eat a quick run of hits in a stream. Nice.

I still think I did some dumb stuff that got me killed and a much higher score is possible but that was good for now.

Another really tight package with feel and hidden depth. I was very glad to see you had your sound crew present for this entry, and it came out great. I missed that in the demon-head lane-racer game.

Well done.

gre 2018-04-24 06:15

audio and graphics is incredible. The game is innovative in many ways. good job

epono 2018-04-24 09:14

Very cool combination, lots of fun fun fun fun fun fun FUN, some risk & reward.

Solid entry

potondo 2018-04-24 16:00

Man, this game is fantastic. Ridiculously polished feeling.

A minor point, but I do think having some form of invincibility frames for a duration would make this game a tad less punishing. Right now sometimes you feel punished for one mistake when you get hit by a billion shots at the same time. It does keep the game short though so maybe it's more of a preference thing.

Anyway super great job!

incredible-ape 2018-04-24 16:13

@Potondo You do! At 60fps, you have about 3 invincibility frames on hurt.

potondo 2018-04-24 16:21

@incredible-ape Haha really? My bad then. Really didn't notice it.

incredible-ape 2018-04-24 16:21

@pkenney Thank you so much for the "fan mail", it means a lot to us!

azargaz 2018-04-24 19:10

This is one of the best entries I have played, props for bullet hell, my game is also combination of bullet hell and other genre in my case it's turnbased :ok_hand:

noumenus 2018-04-24 19:12

Really cool concept! I like how the enemy bullets are of your own making, you are your worst enemy haha

mau 2018-04-24 19:13

Great game, port it to mobile. My entry has similar mechanics like arkanoid, but it's a goalkeeper against some towers.

wernerw 2018-04-24 19:14

wow !! amazing job guys . The sound and Graphics are on point. very good entry

professorrekyl 2018-04-24 19:15

Cool game, super hard and challenging.

kubenexion 2018-04-24 19:15

Really funny game, you guys made a good job!

shadowl33ch 2018-04-24 19:16

This brings back memories! I used to love Arkanoid  I like the combination with bullet hell and think this is a great concept! Well done on a polished and fun experience!

shubart 2018-04-24 19:16

Really fun. thank you for this entry. Which technoligies did you use?

gettingrekt 2018-04-24 19:16

Incredible solid game play and "feel". Nice idea and implementation as well as great graphics and audio. This game has it all in my opinion. And a nice ramping up difficulty as well. Good job!

dlowe 2018-04-24 19:17

This is really fun! And very hard!

It seems very polished, to be honest. If you're looking to expand/elaborate, I'd love to see your take on breakout "power ups" with the twist that the upgraded projectiles come back at you :)

Thanks for the game!

ragalios 2018-04-24 19:17

good one! a bit stressing but i love it in a way)) and you are literally destroy yourself, this is cool))

jk5000 2018-04-24 19:18

This is an very intense and super fast game. I overall liked the game, but for me it was also a bit too difficult.

steel-dev 2018-04-24 19:21

Absolutely wonderful! so much fun! Got a score of 21,200! xD Great job on the game!

schonstal 2018-04-24 19:21

@shubart It's built in HaxeFlixel

radow 2018-04-24 19:24

Well done. The way this game plays one wouldn't think that the genres are at odds with each other at all, but the fact that you basically fire the very attacks that you later on have to dodge, the balance between just attacking and leaving strategic gaps, all while under pressure from the approaching bricks makes for a really interesting gameplay while maintaining the feeling that the game is a somewhat odd combination of genres =)

The oldscool graphics and sounds are on point and the difficulty has an addictive ramp to it: generous enough with pickups, forgiving at first and increasingly difficult as it goes on.

cristhor98 2018-04-24 19:27

fucking insane, fucking addictive, awesome music. 5 stars, i love it, i want this game on my phone!

weekend-panda 2018-04-24 19:28

Terrific job! I am not usually a fan of arcade-high-score style games, but I kept playing this over and over, so it must be good. :) Well made and really entertaining, great work!

themadpangolin 2018-04-24 19:29

A unique game concept with great execution PLUS sexy graphics and music. I won't be surprised if you make it into the top 10! Brilliant work :D

yozamu 2018-04-24 19:29

I feel like the concept is really simple, but that's also one of its main strength. The only downside I see is that there is no real "feedback" with own bullets (like you can't make bounces like in breakout). But everything looks good. Well done

marioman68 2018-04-24 19:29

O wow that is a good looking game and the music and sound fit great. It feels really good to play and when you die it your own falt.

tsk 2018-04-24 19:34

Wow, this looks really nice and also the idea is cool! really fun and challenging to play! Well done!

saering 2018-04-24 19:35

That's the genre of game I liked and I was not disappointed. Cool to play, cool to hear, cool to see, GREAT JOB

boltkey 2018-04-24 19:35

That was fun! Really great job. Clever idea and it just works! Very nice visuals and audio!

Got 45,100 on second try. Didn't really feel like giving it a third try. Perhaps because of quite long time of a single run and relatively slow progression/difficulty curve.

It was also a bit frustrating waiting for a repair to reach me, while there were also bullets coming right at me.

My game is also breakout, except crossed over with snake!

giantswing 2018-04-24 19:43

I had a blast playing it, really really cool idea and super cool presentation, amazing job!

gamedevmumin 2018-04-24 19:46

My heart is yours. I would like to say something, but you have taken my heart and I can't. INCREDIBLE. Just that.

rulrite 2018-04-24 19:47

One of the best entries I've played so far: it's super-engaging and super-polished. Looking at everyone else's comments, it seems like I'm not very good at the game, myself (ahem!), but I still had a wonderful time.

The controls are tight, the graphics are solid, the music is catchy and the sound effects pack a punch - everything about it just made me want to play more. It's a lot of fun to test out different strategies, too, to try and find the most efficient/least dangerous way of clearing blocks... so there's definitely a lot of reason play again!

Well done, guys. I could easily see this as a game on iOS/Android.

gamepopper 2018-04-24 19:50

Holy hell! There are so many bullets on the screen that you need to be careful with how often you shoot. Brilliant combination!

tutti-ankka 2018-04-24 19:58

Really enjoyed this one! Nice concept and overall very polished entry. Loved the art as well!

lecalat 2018-04-24 20:00

Got 44050. That was really fun! Great game.

kr4ft3r 2018-04-24 20:01

Top atmosphere, caused by good sound, graphics and programming. Educational as well, the more you go berserk with fire, the harder it comes back at you. Haven't found it to be fun for long, but it is clear that each of you did your parts great. With this being a jam entry, I wish you took some more time to add a powerup or some variation like that.

houruck 2018-04-24 20:05

Love the concept and the execution as well. The sound and music sell it for me.

imod 2018-04-24 20:13

Very good gameplay, fantstic idea of the game! Looks very finished and polished.

trivial171 2018-04-24 20:16

I'm very impressed with how well this game works. This is a great use of the theme and feels very nice to play.

Edit: I should elaborate, because since I left this comment, I've been coming back to this game quite a bit. I think it's really impressive that you managed to take a simple concept and craft it into an experience that not only feels amazing, but is also surprisingly deep. I've probably played this game at least 50 times now and I still feel like I'm improving at it and finding new strategies.

fil089 2018-04-24 20:50

Say what, this game is just solid! I had a similar idea for my game: Combine a Shooter with something else. And I'd like to think I did the best job I could've, but this game just blows what I've done. Arcade shooter with break out, but the bullets you shoot become hazards to you. Brilliant! And the game been based on a score attack mode just sells the brilliance of the idea. Just a thing though: Aparently Break Out and Arcade Shooters goes really well together. I have a felling the best games of this jam will have this for a pet-peev...

seconddimension 2018-04-24 20:56

This is so good, great fun and everything feels very professional and polished. It's a cool mechanic too, fits the theme and works really well.

mowztouch 2018-04-24 23:38

Nice Entry, pretty hqrd bullet hell mechanic to get all our touching bullets sent back. Nice work :)

pcoridan 2018-04-25 01:40

Loved this! Mix up of my two favorite genres. I've wasted so many hours on breakout.

We have an unfinished game if you want to check it out. Dino Multiplayer. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/a-title-for-a-game

diego-escalante 2018-04-25 01:51

Simple but great concept of the theme, and flawlessly executed. The polish on the game is wonderful. It truly feels like a complete, whole game.

jchaplin 2018-04-25 01:57

Love the look and feel of the game, great job!

saintheiser 2018-04-25 02:45

Your shoots is your bullets.. Love the idea! Very simple and clean! Music is awesome too!

samuelsousa 2018-04-25 07:55

Awesome! Best game I have seen so far! Simple and effective.

pimpampoum 2018-04-25 08:21

Very good idea, think simple is very hard ! very good job

palsina 2018-04-25 11:49

Having your shoots become enemy bullets is a great concept, and it works great here. Had a lot of fun!

dragonxvi 2018-04-25 12:22

Great little idea, executed really well too! Love it :D

blinkenlights 2018-04-25 21:50

Wow, that was intense/fun/enjoyable/epic/[insert further positive adjectives here]. A really polished game, the artwork and the music worked really well with the mechanics, and all in a light and fun but rather hardcore fashion a the same time. Well done!

sebastianscaini 2018-04-29 19:14

Wow! Incredibly polished, well designed and well implemented. I absolutely loved it!

jima 2018-05-01 14:08

Really nice game! Visuals and music are cool, but the best thing in this game is concept. That is incredibly awesome idea that you are dodging your own bullets, I loved it!

mercurybd 2018-05-02 16:48

Really nice idea and great execution. Keep up the good work.

puppetmaster 2018-05-03 18:30

Super cool game!! Everything just fits. Great arcade feeling. I had a really good time playing. !! Now some bonus stones and a boss made of blocks !!

bunnybreaker 2018-05-04 14:53

I love break out style games and bullet hell so I had to try this. At first it was super hard, because by default I just hold shoot and try to stay alive, but I found I needed to be more strategic with my shooting in this. This surprised and impressed me. Nice complete feeling package

cristiano-m-garcia 2018-05-13 02:54

Good job! Cool game!

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.
