nice. I beat the first three dudes. they turned into graves. :D the second guy was really hard to pass. not sure how to get through the door though. :D

incd021 2018-04-23 05:41

First enemy, no problem after 2 tries, the next.. well.. in time I will beat him, coz I'll keep trying to. Love the graphics, and the game idea. feels like a complete game. :) Very well done!

rombus 2018-04-23 11:51

@commanderstitch @INCD021 thanks for the feedback bros! I've fixed the bug not letting you go through the door. Hopefully you'll try it again and manage to beat it. There are only 3 levels :D

selfsame 2018-04-23 18:42

Love a good pico8 game, clever take on the theme and it was well executed (i got to level 3!)

elemel 2018-04-23 19:14

Well done. Your take on the Platform Hero name and genre combo was better executed than mine. Made it to level 3.

themadpangolin 2018-04-23 21:50

Rhythm games are real sweet! My only criticism would be to add a bit more of a delay before you have to start hitting the notes just for you to get ready quicker. Nice game though :D

sndr 2018-04-23 23:58

Good stuuff! :) Felt like the hardness increased all of a sudden after the first enemy, maybe the arrows could start from the very end of the window instead of spawning close to the centre to give the player a little bit of extra reaction time to prepare for the wave. Other than that, cool take and satisfying mechanics. ^^

2018-04-24 09:07

Nice stuff! Rythmn section seemed tough, but works really well once you get into it. Baddies turning into graves was an amusing touch.

nehvis 2018-04-24 12:41

Very cool game! The rhythm mechanic worked so much better than in other entries I've seen so far due to the preview. Also neat graphics and audio

luciax 2018-04-24 12:49

Interesting platformer game with a rhythm-based battle. Also love the graphic works. The rhythm part does not have a ready time and begins so suddenly, making it a little bit hard to react.

vrarr 2018-04-24 12:52

Nice! The quickest one on the second lvl is a tough one! It runs smoothly and no mechanic frustration! Good work :)

dylan-rainwater 2018-04-24 13:04

Wow! This was super fun, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to your write-up on how you parsed the maps. Let me know when you post it please!

shimapleleaf 2018-04-24 13:15

Great game! Though I feel like the rhythm sections were a bit sloppy, a bit of a delay before you have to hit the notes would already make it a lot better. Also not a big fan of the noise in the soundtrack, it's a bit too loud.

goutye 2018-04-24 13:17

The jump was sometimes hard to handle for some coins. But had fun! Completed the game with a bit more than 4400points! Well done

rombus 2018-04-24 13:27

@goutye Hey thanks a lot for playing it all the way! Yeah, the physics are a pure hack u_u

@themadpan, @sndr, @luciax, @shimapleleaf: thanks all for playing! I know what you mean, I've added the preview in order to make it less of a surprise but the error IMO is that the notes don't start off the screen, they start too close to the cursor x_x. I'll fix it post jam

@shimapleleaf you mean the SNARE DRUM? hahha I get what you mean, I should have dialed it down a little on the noise channel.

@dylan-rainwater thanks a lot! I'll let you know :D

mainghia95 2018-04-24 13:49

I like your art style + your rhythm. And the combining of 2 genre is kinda fun. We also make a cinematic game with pixel art. Care to check it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/daxua

bros 2018-04-24 16:14

I like platformer and I like rythmgames so you already got me with the description.

It's a pretty neet game. I liked the idea to defeat the enemies via a "Guitar Hero" duel. The artstyle is simple but effective. The tombstone is a cool effect!

The physics are a little bit weird as already mentioned by others. Especially when you only have 3 seconds left and try to reach the checkpoint... Also the rythm section "started to fast". Meaning, the time after the Attention phase was to short for me.

But at the end I had fun and managed to beat the game! 4923 Points

strato 2018-04-24 20:41

Not too good at rhythm games so I struggled to even get past the first level, but it was a decent game. Audio was alright, the art could be better and was mostly carried by its palette, gameplay was decent and if I enjoyed rhythm games I'm sure I would have enjoyed this one.

benbusby 2018-04-24 20:41

Nice!!! This is actually one of the best pico-8 games I think I've played in a long time. I loved the idea of rhythm based combat, and it was done really well. I'd love to see a longer version of this game one day, it's definitely got potential to be a really great full length game. Nice job!

richard-n-silva 2018-04-24 20:42

Really liked your artstyle, simple and functional. I have encontered some collision issues on level 2 (top platforms) but nothing game breaking.

I would suggest to add a timer before the player turn. Right now it starts really fast, and it's easy to miss the first movement. Overall I liked the theme, and it seems that you managed to keep your scope very realistic, since the game feels polished :)

Congratulations on the project!

We are looking for feedbacks for our entry, “Type ‘n Jump”. Please consider checking it out too :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/type-n-jump

przekop 2018-04-24 20:42

Nice entry here. Rythm element was good. But in my opinion levels (first 3, i didn't make it further) are too cramped. Also i happened to fall thru the floor and got stuck in one place, but i guess it's my luck.

dlowe 2018-04-24 20:43

\o/ pico8

Good concept, & impressively polished for a ludum dare entry. I liked the visuals a lot.

A wee bit more in-game help during the rhythm sections would helped me a lot -- it took me quite a while to figure out that the first playthrough was "watch and learn" and then the second was "now your turn". I think it's a good idea, mechanically, but the mechanic isn't well conveyed to players yet.

Thanks for the game!

noumenus 2018-04-24 20:44

Cool game! Defeating the enemies through the Rhythm portion is the most fun part. I feel like the timed mechanic makes it needlessly too difficult but it is still a great game

re-markable 2018-04-24 20:45

Great game! Gets really hard very fast, but I think that makes the game better. Love the artstyle and the amazing audio!

reign 2018-04-24 20:47

I really like the concept and art, nice work!

weekend-panda 2018-04-24 20:49

Hey, nicely done! This was a fun little game to play, and very easy to understand which is great. I also like the character designs, they are unique and don't feel generic. Good work!

lazlo319 2018-04-24 20:50

Very good, love the concept. It's very fun and very simple, very easy to play and get into.

firesplash-entertainment 2018-04-24 20:50

Nice idea and very harmonizing combination of tboith genres! Great job! Would love to hear your thoughts about CornWars LD :)

tg1397 2018-04-24 20:59

That third level is so hard! I definitely think a 3 lives system would be better than a timer, just because how frustrating it is to run out of time. Really well made!

neontropics 2018-04-24 22:29

Haha, I really like this. Rhythm games are always fun, and small music themes were surprisingly catchy and fun to play. It was really hard though...

Physics and platforming were not as interesting as the rhythm parts for me, but the rhythm parts were good fun!

boltkey 2018-04-24 23:49

Great idea, love the concept.

The hardest part was always the first note, especially in the sequences of 3. I always missed it because there was just not enough time to see that I am already playing.

Also, in the like 4th level, I got stuck at the bottom and could not get up to the remaining enemies. I ran out of time, and had to start from the first level again. Which I of course did not. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

rombus 2018-04-25 14:32

@BoltKey Thanks a lot for playing and leaving quality feedback! I agree with you completely, the problem here was that I suffer from being "good" at my own game. That always happens due to obvious reasons, but the thing here is that I never play-tested it loosing. I haven't even think about the fact that if you loose on the last level you have to start over from the first, that sucks!

Although to be honest, this jam took a lot of effort and I have to deal with a lot of stuff at the same time and that's why it isn't as polished as I'd like it to be, and also why I couldn't even think of some issues.

I'll update the post with the feedback I'll fix on a post jam version. Both your comments (the first one being mentioned by various other users too) will be there!

Thanks all for playing!

philstrahl 2018-04-26 03:26

Enjoyed it quite a bit. Interestingly, those two genres are quite a match, it reminded me a little of God of War on the PSP: Platforming and then quick time events in between. Liked the graphics, they look comparatively polished for the development time. My only two complaints are the jumping and that I often missed the first keys when it was my turn.

Other ideas I had would be that picking up a coin would add another second to the timer, or that harder enemies would occasionally require you to push also the X key. I am well aware that that was just not possible during the jam, though :)

Good game!

yngvarr 2018-04-27 09:42

What a great game! =) I love almost everything about it, especially the background tune. There are some bugs with crouching that can make character stuck or even allow to fall through a platform, but this doesn't break a game for me.

harusame 2018-04-28 15:43

Good compo game :) Concept is cool and execution is quite strong :) The "Rhythm" part is a bit too fast and hard for me but that's because I'm very bad at QTE.

akadream 2018-04-28 15:48

Overall this is a great, but a little to hard for me x)

kurt-roembke 2018-04-28 16:03

I really liked this! I think they rhythm part of the game would be better if the example was followed by a few beats and then the "test" part comes in, in time. Right now, a beat is established and then when the "test" section comes in, it restarts the rhythm. Either way, that's a pretty small issue for a jam game! Nice Job!

von-vista 2018-04-28 16:09

This game was super fun, very very coll, as a fan of rhythm games myself, I find this enjoyable, and with the 8 bit style blending it so well, a really great job, A+

juzley 2018-04-28 16:35

Amazing effort - occasionally the physics seems to go a bit crazy but that's the only thing I can fault it for.

philstrahl 2018-04-28 20:14

You already watched the video, but for posteriority's sake, here's the link again: :) https://youtu.be/UoxXOgp40t0

matoux42 2018-04-28 23:11

Nice concept ! It's a bit hard for me, but you do something very cool. ;)

kami-86 2018-04-29 17:30

#### Positive - Graphics - It's feel really good to take down the enemys with rhythm - the rhythm parts feels great

#### Observation - Some plataforms are hard to reach, even some coins you can be in that platform, so i cheat... Start to jump like no tomorrow and grav it.

Like how you treat the rhythm parts, nice.

theamazingb 2018-05-01 18:03

Very cool game. The rhythm parts got really hard FAST! a little more lead time would have been nice. All in all tho very solid

lotus 2018-05-03 19:57

This game is great! I like the idea of combining arrow game and platform. The graphics and sounds are great. Hard to believe that this is a compo. But it is sooooooo difficult! I just can not move far TAT How about try my music adventure game here? Expecting your feedback https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/on-thin-line

lotus 2018-05-03 20:00

Well just want to paste your intro as mine

I'm a software developer and musician. I love gamedeving and envy to death graphic artists!

n00b 2018-05-03 20:13

A good game. My only issue is that it seemed to speed up and slow down at random. I don't know if it was the game or my browser though. If you get the chance it would be awesome if you could play my game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/college-story

jchaplin 2018-05-03 20:59

Very nice game! I don't normally like rhythm games, but this combination plays really good. Great job!

gamekrazzy 2018-05-04 00:22

Thoroughly enjoyed your game after I figured it out, a proper tutorial for how to open the door would have been handy, seeing as I had no clue I had to kill all the enemies right away. (I do however see that it's in the description) Anyways, the art, audio design, and gameplay are solid! Great job!

ratherjolly 2018-05-04 01:15

Brilliant! Bleep blop bloop bleep x]

jimbly 2018-05-04 15:50

Pretty good! I had a lot of difficulty with the platform parts, there was one coin on level 2 I just couldn't get to in the upper right... ran out of time trying to get it, and when I died and had to start again from level 1, that was the end for me ^_^.

nilc 2018-05-05 14:33

Nice work! The mechanics are fun and the Graphics/Atmosphere are great too!

puppetmaster 2018-05-05 15:00

The idea of combining rhythm and jump is great. Animations and graphics are well done. I am not satisfied with the quality of the music and pressing the keys in rhythm is far too fast for the first opponent. But that's a solid game. Keep up the good work!!

Would be great if you could try our game too. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/astropover

rombus 2018-05-05 15:20

Hey @puppetmaster thanks for playing and the feedback! can you elaborate on the music? is the loop to short? the sounds too nasty or the overall music?

I'll check out your game now!

puppetmaster 2018-05-05 15:38

@rombus Neither! I like pixel music. :) But in your game it is choppy, delayed and somehow out of sync. Like a very old dusty nes cartridge. I don't know if this has anything to do with the PICO or if it was created especially for this purpose.

rombus 2018-05-05 17:56

Thanks for the response @puppetmaster! It must be the web player, it certainly was not intended to be delayed or out of sync O_O but I had a few critiques about the music, so I'll have to check it out further

patrickgh3 2018-05-05 19:28

It was fun frantically running around to try and school all the remaining dudes with seconds left on the clock. And jumping around the level and executing the arrows are both fun to do, even though they felt a little janky (jump is not floaty enough, and there's not enough of a pause before the first arrow crosses the line imo). I wish though that you didn't get reset back to level 1, otherwise I would have kept playing after level 3. And I wish it was explained that you had to school all the dudes to open the door, and the coins are bonus points, that was confusing. Anyways I still had fun, good job!

lexi 2018-05-05 21:02

Fun game, I definitely enjoyed fighting the enemies, however, I would have liked to have more of a heads up between the notes playing and me having to hit the notes. Otherwise really cool entry!

shivur 2018-05-06 02:02

Great pico 8 game.

blubberquark 2018-05-06 14:17

This is tied for the best rhythm game this LD! The beats line up with the buttons! What more could you ask for?

velocity7 2018-05-06 18:05

Rhythm? Naaah! I don't think so but it was more like guitar hero. I don't if that's rhythm or not. But its good and polished

geckoo1337 2018-05-10 12:29

Interesting gameplay. Nice Pico game. Good entry. The idea of combining rhythm and jump is really unusual - definitely you fit with the theme. Well done ++

cristiano-m-garcia 2018-05-11 23:32

I loved the layout of the battles and found it very difficult from the beginning. It was missing to show more clearly when you hit the commands. Congratulations for the game.

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/witchs-escape

sean-s-leblanc 2018-05-13 14:55

Nice entry, always cool to see more PICO-8.

As a few other people have mentioned, the platforming physics could use a bit of work and the rhythm sections start off a bit tough, but otherwise this is a pretty solid game.

schu 2018-05-13 15:44

The audio was extremely charming. I felt like the rhythm challenges popped up a bit too quickly to comprehend them at first until you knew they were coming. I also didn't see any visual indication that you had to defeat all enemies before going through the door to the next level. Really great work on this one overall.
