LD42 — Running out of space

Inventorious by MatiErnst 2018-08-14T15:27:06Z

This was super clever! I really enjoyed working out the puzzles, even if they were frustrating at times. I liked that you were able to show artwork that didn't get into the main part of the game on the final level. I would definitely enjoy having this be a part of a grander rpg as a mechanic. As is though, a really cool puzzle game!

The Return by seizethedia 2018-08-14T22:51:47Z

It took me a couple play throughs to actually understand the mechanics of how floaters attacked you. I think one issue is that there was not really motivation (for me at least) to go get the objects because if I did that, the stairs would almost definitely be cut off by the poison. If it was on my way, sure, but other than that I was just charging for the exit each time. It's frustrating that a tile can go pink when you step on it and instantly kill you. I liked the combination of slowly limiting movement and enemies, however.

Train Hustle by Howard Duong 2018-08-14T00:25:07Z

Fun game! I liked the strategy behind trying to ride the line of enough people on the train without it breaking. The graphics are cute and simple, and the audio cues made it easy to tell when you were moving vs when you were at the station.

Stack 'Em Up by flyingrobot 2018-08-14T15:11:44Z

Really cute and simple to understand! I think some of the physics might be a bit off, but definitely a well made game. The graphics look pretty good and the music is nice

No One's Land by tenshi42 2018-08-14T00:43:12Z

I appreciate Timmy, he's doing his best. One thing that was kind of weird is at one point a bomb slowly rolled across the screen from against his tower to against mine - I don't think it did any damage, but it was a weird buggy thing. I also feel like the music is at odds with the sounds effects. I also don't know if the health of the tower and walls ever really came into play, though I didn't play it with another person so I don't really know. Fun game overall!

Rathin' by UnknownEviI 2018-08-14T14:27:51Z

The controls were definitely hard to understand at first, and it's possible the fact that I only have a trackpad made it worse! My laptop additionally had trouble handling the start when all the cars emerged. I wish that it was clearer from the beginning which car is the player-car. I think it's an interesting idea for sure

Overflow by Mors 2018-08-14T13:57:55Z

The graphics in this are incredible. The levels are really unforgiving, but I can definitely see how they're possible - I'm just not very good at it lol. I feel like the wall jumping could use some work still? Just to make it a bit easier to navigate.

Chef Frank's Franks by GhostGoatsGames 2018-08-15T02:51:19Z

This was well done! I do wish the condiments were easier to access, but the graphics are adorable.

Countdown by Elnu 2018-08-14T01:24:24Z

I could see this being a really nice mobile game - not sure about the controls, but the aesthetics feel like it would be perfect for something to pull out of my pocket and do for about 5 minutes on a commute. I agree with the other commenters that the movement felt jagged and awkward.

Tale of the Bagger: A Love Story by trozen 2018-08-14T01:04:47Z

This was really fun! I enjoyed the challenge a lot. I got all the way to level 12 on my first try :) I wish you had fewer lives, but that they reset at each level, rather than just the four for the entire game. Perhaps that would remove too much of the challenge though?

LD42 Running out of Space by Gary Beebe 2018-08-14T15:39:00Z

I didn't realize at first that you had to press up to move so I just kind of sat and rotated. Also, I think there might have been something off with the AI? If I just sat and spun in a circle, they never hit me. Made winning pretty easy! It would have been nice to see some sort of enemy health to know if I was making any sort of indent. The motion felt very smooth and the graphics looked nice.

The Reclaiming by TheFoppian 2018-08-14T14:15:06Z

This was a good concept, though I wish there were a few more things implemented - it was a little frustrating that it was possible to run out of employable population. It meant that once I ran out, it was just waiting for the end game for the monsters to be strong enough to reclaim all the land, and since they were only taking it 10% at a time... I just stopped before they'd get there. I would like a victory ending as well - I had over 500% land at some point, which felt enough like a win to me. Additionally, I think there was a glitch I experienced where I was upping the rations but it was only increasing the happiness. Certainly a glitch in my favor! I wasn't sure if there was any impact in the happiness meter either, other than just a loss if it got to 0?

EPIC THEATER by filgreen3 2018-08-14T16:06:36Z

This was a really good first Jam game. There are definitely some bugs in the Jam version (like the wrong seats being highlighted as available) but I can see where you were going with this. I think it also needs some balancing work - it was very easy to just choose the one play that Orcs love but Gnomes hate, go 50/50 on Large and Medium seats and make tons of reputation. I didn't feel the need to upgrade the theater at all. Perhaps start with a very small theater? Or maybe by choosing a play a race hates, you get a hit to your reputation that you have to mitigate by trying to fill the seats. Additionally, turning people away felt not worth the hit to reputation when you could just wait out the rest of the day. Maybe instead, having a full theater boosts your score to make it feel more necessary?

EPIC THEATER by filgreen3 2018-08-14T16:18:54Z

@filgreen3 I understand - I realized retrospectively my comment might have sounded a little negative. Honestly I came up with more ideas while playing because I was really enjoying it, but would have loved to see it just that much further - I might follow along!

Lemonade Stand by koesie10 2018-08-22T04:49:32Z

There was a glitch in my browser where I couldn't actually see the people in the line. I could still click on them, but without being able to see them it was very hard

LD44 — Your life is currency

Seize the Clay by SecondDimension 2019-04-30T03:06:39Z

This game is so cute! I really liked making the pots, even though I wasn't that great at it lol. I'm a little confused on how it gets at the theme - like, I can kind of see it, but I feel it could have been integrated better. I also think it could use some re-balancing - by the second day when I figured out how to actually play, I made over 3000 dollars when all I needed was 100. All in all, this was a really fun game!

Koe by velvetlobster 2019-04-30T00:40:53Z

This was pretty cool! It was definitely super creepy and atmospheric. I think you're selling yourself short! There's definitely a really good set up here

Minus by DrSkort 2019-04-30T03:46:33Z

I really liked the sort of ominous vibe. That being said, it was kind of hard to tell the difference between pit and solid ground, so I ended up falling in a lot of pits. There didn't really feel like a huge consequence for doing so, however. It controlled very well though, and felt very responsive

Peepo's Parlour by Team Kelly 2019-04-30T03:35:30Z

This really freaked me out! In a really great way though, lol. I think it was a little frustrating that no matter what I did I didn't do enough, but I totally get running out of time. I wish that I had a better idea of which flavor was which at the start as well. The graphics were awesome and the voice acting was really fun

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Keyboard Army by PeachTreeOath 2018-04-24T06:26:16Z

This was a ton of fun! I might not have been great at the strategizing aspect lol - I just frantically typed the names as fast as possible. I did eventually figure out how to get as many things placed at once though which is super helpful. I'd love to play a longer version of this! I get why the names were long, but I wish there were more, weaker cards that had short names.

The Mad Tea Party - A Card and Run Game by Tiberius 2018-04-24T02:55:37Z

Kind of unfortunate, but I fell in the ditch in the tutorial after trying to figure out how the portals work. There isn't really a way to get out once you're down there. I really liked the blend of genres you picked and it looked really nice!

Platform Hero by Rombus 2018-04-24T20:59:55Z

That third level is so hard! I definitely think a 3 lives system would be better than a timer, just because how frustrating it is to run out of time. Really well made!

Yum Some!! by frostByte4k 2018-04-25T04:15:47Z

This was very frustrating lol, I wish it was clearer what you were supposed to do when starting the levels because I didn't know what to do on the bacon one. I only got there once, too. Definitely a good rage game

Roundabout: ~ Roguelike & Rythm ~ Trading Bard Game by Gustavo Manchae 2018-04-25T19:08:33Z

This was very fun! I really enjoyed the idea of having combative bards, it reminds me of an off the rails DnD in some ways. There are a few weird things about it though. Evidently, you can have beyond the grave solos lol. I wish you could control the target of the card - if there was a way I couldn't figure it out. It made the healing cards pointless once an ally was down because the healing would - uselessly - go to them. Other than that, great game!

Teeny Tailors by Bobo Games 2018-04-24T20:05:17Z

This was very cute, it took me a couple tries but I liked the attempt to maintain the health and the dress at the same time. I do think there are a few off by one errors possibly in your health code, because every once in a while a character died that I wasn't expecting to. Still, very fun game!

My Dear Farm by Benjamin San Souci 2018-04-24T20:40:59Z

This was fun and creepy. I really wish that there was more motivation to do the actual farming part rather than just to do the task as quickly as possible to continue the story. Also, at the end, I found a slight glitch where if you don't succeed the first time you can't activate the brief reveal cut scene again, so it becomes impossible. The sprites were all well made, and I enjoyed the story a lot

My Dear Farm by Benjamin San Souci 2018-04-24T21:43:57Z

You still have to investigate the barn afterwards - it might still be possible, but the monster spawned in such a way that getting to the barn was much harder than anticipated.

Flower Hero by Curt 2018-04-25T04:22:58Z

This is a very cute game! I like the sprites used on the flowers and such. It does take a minute to learn, but the music matches well with the game itself. I also feel like it's so easy to spin immediately out of control in this, but that's probably just me not being great at the game. Good work!

I bet that your CATS look good in the dance floor by agar3s 2018-04-24T19:27:30Z

This was fun! It's sized a bit weirdly in my browser, but I zoomed out and it played just fine. It's definitely very cute

Ah! Runaway! by Reign 2018-04-24T06:34:20Z

This fits pretty well with the theme! I really wish that the different things on the bottom had an impact on how the runner was going (or vice versa, lol) like if the runner needed to jump over something using the up command, for instance. I also wish that the sound lined up better, but yeah, time constraints will get ya every time. Good work though!

Dunk Four by edj99 2018-04-24T06:43:45Z

This is really cool! I don't know about how it works with the theme, but I love this game. I almost wish that if you miss, it would skip your turn - just to make it extra challenging. Love it!

Kingdom Crush by Hannah19 2018-04-24T04:28:42Z

Thank you @suess! We're definitely looking into fixing the balancing for the TD part.

Kingdom Crush by Hannah19 2018-04-24T21:57:24Z

Thank you everybody for your comments! @Bobo Games Jeffrey worked on the minion sprites, Nathan provided all the music, Dan made the romanceable character drawings as well as our end scenes and then some code to boot, Hannah wrote the dialogue (with really mild help from me in the starting scene) and made the sprites that Jeffrey didn't, and then Donald and I were the team programmers. He worked on the tower defense part and I created the dialogue system that we used.

Greg, Adam, and Melanie acted as mentors to us throughout, giving us lots of encouragement and pointers about how to actually add music, the ways Unity works, and art tips and tricks. We absolutely could not have done this without them.

Kingdom Crush by Hannah19 2018-04-25T00:16:59Z

@SeaHam that's really unfortunate. What system/browser are you running? Also, which towers?

Kingdom Crush by Hannah19 2018-04-25T00:27:31Z

@SeaHam It should hit all the enemies. Both do a slight amount of blast radius, so really they're not great for beginning game. In future updates, we'd like to have them be unlockable instead - we might buff them as well.

Kingdom Crush by Hannah19 2018-04-25T00:36:12Z

@alphazeba I've been using firefox mostly, though I don't know why the browser change would cause that error :/

Kingdom Crush by Hannah19 2018-04-25T00:36:53Z

@willowblade Yep! That's a known bug, probably going to update it out this weekend at some point. And at this point no, there's not a plan to make another VN.

Kingdom Crush by Hannah19 2018-04-25T18:41:47Z

@Tikikala Your last sentence about sums it up! @Random-storykeeper Thank you so much for your detailed analysis! As a follow up question - if we were to implement a level system for the TD, do you think that it would be best to have the dialogue in between the two levels rather than at the same time? @Jupiter_Hadley Thank you so much! Your comments in the video are definitely good to consider.

Kingdom Crush by Hannah19 2018-04-25T19:11:26Z

@Random-storykeeper Makes sense. Also - the looping lover dialogue is indeed a known issue, but the dismissal dialogue is meant to repeat. It's a way to signal the player that you've annoyed the character and they're leaving. Sorry that wasn't clear!

Don't Pet The Alien! by JohnnyR 2018-04-24T03:05:28Z

I really liked how the audio combined some elements of the fun of a pet simulator, and the creepiness of a horror game. All the little sprites were really cute! I look forward to seeing updates where it's possible to better tell which one is the bad one, because now it's just stabbing willy nilly and it makes me feel guilty

Prison Cat by figrita 2018-04-24T04:01:44Z

This was really fun! Like other people have said, it took me a little bit to figure out what I was betting on. Once I did, it made tons of sense! The cat was great, I loved the little bits of dialogue that he had.
