Music should be in sync with clicking :/
I agree! sadly I only had 4-8hrs to work on it by myself so I had to use any premade music I could find. I actually didn't think i'd have time to add any music honestly, but I got some from opengameart.
I guite love the mechanics! i think music is good enough for this.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it :)
I got a better score by mashing all the arrow keys as fast as I could! It's a great mix of the rhythm/infinite runner genre. I didn't notice if you actually did implement this, but it would be nice to gain a pace after hitting a large combo. Left me wishing it would slow down and wait for me to catch up! :P
Lol! I did actually consider the possibility someone might try mashing and meant to check for that but forgot xD I'll have to fix it next time I work on it. I wanted to add something for combos but wasn't sure what it should do :x was thinking maybe it would give the player a temporary speed boost to get away from the truck or initiate a bonus mode where you get 2x the score. I'd really like to add more interaction between the presses and what happens with the character
Even with the premade music, it was pretty good!
This fits pretty well with the theme! I really wish that the different things on the bottom had an impact on how the runner was going (or vice versa, lol) like if the runner needed to jump over something using the up command, for instance. I also wish that the sound lined up better, but yeah, time constraints will get ya every time. Good work though!
Simple and nice game, expecially if made in a few hours.. good job! ;)
I'm a little disapointed that notes are not un rythm with the music. But it's a very good concept :) (a little bit too hard x))
@mic-matrix91 @Amatwiedle @hello-coder Thanks for the positive feedback everyone!
@tg1397 I was thinking the same thing! I've been debating how I might be able to do it and have a few ideas i'm going to try that could be a huge improvement.
@Akadream I'm not sure why but all the games I make are notoriously hard for some reason lol :p
it just needs a start button so i can start when im actually ready lol
I like the idea, I'm not sure it integrates the theme very well though. Graphics were great. Music was fun. Would be nice to have a start / end screen and variation in the spacing of the notes. Great work! Would you mind reviewing my game? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/ld41-jam-game
Nice game! A shame I can't see my score because I'm too focused on the buttom part of the screen and when I died the score is gets reseted :( Same goes for the art, you are not looking at the running man and the car.
The fact that the music was not on sync with the arrows made the game very difficult. It was quite enjoyable thanks to the music tho.
Keep up the great work!
It all looks quite neat, and fits the theme well. It was pretty hard though, I really struggled to keep up!
The graphics are minimalistic but very nice and fitting. As others have already said, it would've been nice (and kind of essential for this type of game to work better) if the notes fit the music. Also maybe you can come up with a nicer integration of the notes and the rest of the game: when I'm looking at the notes, I can't see what's happening on the top half of the screen.
@Tikikala Sorry about that xD normally I add a start and game over screen, but I started this game when there was like 24 hrs of the jam left lol.
@theArtifacts Thanks! Sure, i'll try your game now.
@chriiis88 @DUUUUDE I did actually think of a good solution to not being able to see the player, but unfortunately it was only after the jam ended. I'm going to try implementing my new idea today and if it's fun i may finish the game. The solution is to get rid of the lower bar, choose a smaller resolution and make it so that you have to press the arrows as they appear around the player sprite
I'd love a more forgiving game mechanic, but otherwise, this is a great little submission! Being chased by the truck was intense!
With only 4-8hrs that is really good but if this Ludum Dare has taught me anything its that I suck at rhythm games. I found it tricky and couldn't play it for longer than 30 seconds but it was good. Like how it looks.
Personally I didn't really see it fit well into the theme since the infinite runner aspect didn't really tie into gameplay at all. This was a pure Rhythm game, and a fun one at that! Given the time you spent on this I think you did a great job!
I just wanna throw in a suggestion to maybe make each genre more apparent. Instead of having the arrows to dictate the button you press, get rid of the DDR section, and work on art assets with a clear interaction (ex. a crate you will always need to jump over (up arrow), a door you need to charge through (right arrow), etc). You could make a few different iterations of assets with the same type of player interaction, and introduce them over time to train the users memory. Just my 2 cents, I needed to throw it out there :)
@derek-brouwer Thanks for the advice! I actually thought the same thing and am working on a version with that now. Just wish I thought of that during the jam lol. I think the reason i may not have come to that conclusion sooner was because I started with the guitar hero/ddr section at the bottom before anything else. If this new version is fun enough and works out i may release it on kongregate and as an app.
I played a first time trying to do my best and event if that was a bit hard it was fun, music and sound effects are cool and enjoyable.
Then after a few tries, I played just to see the graphics because I could not really see them while being focused on the lower part of the screen. And they are really great!
I think there is real potential in your game and in the ideas of @derek_brouwer, allowing the player to enjoy both the rhythm game and the infinite runner game and design.
For the time you passed on it this is really great I think: you have a cool and aesthetic game that works well, and people who enjoy it!
Love the game man! I whish it had a game over screen or something so I could see my score haha. But the core mechanic was well implemented. Oh and the music is awesome!
Neat game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 41 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCS-SbQWjlE
Good job! Cool game!
I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.
I hope you continue with the project.
