LD38 — A Small World

Snail Away by CoderJoe 2017-05-03T18:31:13Z

This is a nice little peaceful game. I did enjoy zooming around from side to side. It's a little light on gameplay though. I'd say either if the world was larger (infinite plane instead of infinite line?) or there were a bit more elements this would be really nice. Maybe you could add periodic "thermals" that give you a lift up, and you have to navigate to those before you hit the ground? Nice job in 48 hours though, I understand the constraints.

The Lonely Captain by nander 2017-05-01T22:58:59Z

This is a great interpretation of the theme, and I like the mystery of the environment you're dropped in. I assume the intention was to remain minimalistic, but a little bit more graphical depth would add to the story I think. I did really like how the audio indicates your proximity to obstacles, although I am still a little confused about how the obstacles work, since letting numbers run to 0 does not always cause you to crash. Anyway, great entry, I'd be interested to see it developed more!

Gaia by PowerSpark 2017-05-03T00:52:47Z

Beautiful pixel art, relaxing atmosphere, and unique puzzle mechanic. I also found the cloud pushing to be a bit unpredictable, but it sort of fit with a feeling of minimalism and discovery. Great unique approach.

ANTIVIRUS by KappaIX 2017-05-01T18:27:18Z

This is great, I love the interpretation of the small world theme. Nice controls, but it might be easier if you could hold the mouse button to continuously fire. I also love the BSOD death screen!

Small Cities by ThePelranthean 2017-05-02T23:00:07Z

It's not totally clear to me how the theme fits in with this, but I like the concept a lot. I reached the top of the screen with my city, and it didn't appear possible to build any higher than that. I tried using the arrow keys to scroll up, but then things were responding oddly to mouse clicks. I like your music a lot too! Overall, I like this game.

Also, if other people like me were confused, you need to double-click on 'SmallCities.bat' and not Urho3DPlayer.exe.

Earth, 3568 by BoltKey 2017-04-23T23:47:38Z

Neat idea! Pretty tricky though. Maybe would be nice to have some guides showing the trajectory of the ship.

An Ant World by wolar 2017-05-01T18:03:18Z

I also made an ant game -- ant buddies! I like the direction of this game, and I'd definitely play a fleshed-out version if you guys continue development. I found the ant production sliders a little confusing, and although I played a few times, I was never able to figure out how to produce enough soldiers to defeat the enemy (who ate all of my ants). Edit: never mind, I think I just got unlucky the first time with the big guys attacking me. I'm figuring it out now!

Interplanetary by mao 2017-05-02T00:01:16Z

This is really great! I love that if you get up enough speed running on the surface you can slowly take off and form an orbit. I did find the levels a bit confusing (specifically the "do a loop" level -- it took me a while to figure out how to progress, and even now I'm not sure what I did differently). Other than that the controls felt nice, and the minimalistic art style suited the game. Great job!

Something's Fishy by kalgynirae 2017-05-02T22:42:29Z

Unfortunately it didn't load all the way for me :(. It opened to a black screen, I heard the music and saw the text "T. Jefferson" and the instructions to hit enter to start, but there were no other graphics, only blackness. I'm on Windows 7. Nice music though!

Hopper by TechnoNugget 2017-05-03T01:01:56Z

This is really great. It feels very polished, and although each round can be a little short, the different tiers of enemies definitely lend it replayability. The controls felt tight and responsive, although I wish jump and shoot were buttons a little farther apart, since a few times I shot when I meant to jump. I think this could be even better if you can figure out a way to make trick shots/exciting shots a little bit easier to achieve or more common, as it's very satisfying to make a long distance shot.

Crate Jump: Planet of the pressing of the spacebar by swellbastion 2017-05-02T01:50:44Z

I like the circular platforming concept. A little unforgiving though (but that might be by design), maybe offer a few lives before resetting all the way back to the beginning?

Railroad to Hell by Ferminho 2017-05-01T22:49:16Z

Some nice old-school feeling animations for the characters. I agree with @flaterectomy that not being able to fight back after taking damage is a little hard to deal with. I did enjoy the Snowpiercer movie (which I assume this is partially inspired by) so it's a neat way to tie in with the theme.

Small Obstacles by digitaldude555 2017-05-01T18:22:26Z

Great concept with the varying levels of depth.

Little Unsuitable Journey by Lukuluk 2017-05-01T22:39:59Z

Interesting idea -- it reminds me of trying to complete the Portal challenges of taking as few steps as possible. The mouse sensitivity was way too high for my taste.

Escape World by Haveachin 2017-04-24T00:00:45Z

Nice concept, I wish it was longer!

Not So Small by CodeChomper 2017-05-02T01:56:57Z

I like the level unfolding idea, that's something I haven't seen before. Nice art and animations too. I did find it a little difficult (took me a minute to understand that getting hit by bird poop was causing damage), but that might just be me!

Tadeo Escapes The Dinosaur by SantiMod 2017-05-02T02:05:22Z

Great art and use of the theme. I found the controls a little difficult -- in particular, if you're too close to the edge of a platform, you can't jump (which makes it difficult to make long horizontal jumps). But I'll be looking forward to seeing how this keeps developing, if you guys flesh it out beyond this. Nice work!

SlapR by MewSoul 2017-05-02T02:14:02Z

Small but entertaining and cohesive game. I definitely agree with your sound choice -- the slap sound made it feel much more satisfying. Also, I think your art is great! It took a minute to figure out that you have to accelerate while slapping (or at least, that's how it seemed to work), but after that my wife couldn't stop slapping penguins. Great job!

SUN GOD by palemachine 2017-05-03T01:14:39Z

I really really loved the intro. The animated text transitioning to the title with bold, bright color change and the slightly discordant chord were just perfect. Beautiful particle and camera shake effects as well. Otherwise I agree with the other commenters here with respect to the gameplay.

Tiny Invasion by James Hartley 2017-04-23T23:55:03Z

Nice little game. It's a little tough though, since enemies seem to come from all around the planet simultaneously. Maybe if they came concentrated more on a side?

Caterpillar Chomp by Xephrys 2017-05-01T22:45:06Z

Hmm... I feel like this one needs a little more depth. I like the endgame goal of trying to eat enough leaves to transform into a butterfly and escape, but the gameplay itself is a bit lacking. I do like the art though!

Cut Them Down To Size! by jump4r 2017-05-02T22:47:36Z

I like the direction of this, and I think you could have something really fun here if it was a bit more fleshed out. I didn't quite get the reason for the click-and-hold laser weapon. Maybe also offer the ability to "eat" the planets that are smaller than you in addition to the asteroids? I did like the concept of using the bullets to drive planets to push the asteroids closer to you -- interesting game mechanic.
