LD38 — A Small World

Toy Racer by Avon 2017-04-25T19:33:32Z

The assets you made for this game are top notch. Really great looking for a Unity game. The race track is very nice and varied. Good job!

Unfortunately, the controls are bad for a racing game. It doesn't seem physics-based, more like some strange sort of character controller (the car doesn't keep momentum and you need to accelerate to steer for example).

You have talent for designing race tracks. Now you just need to spend some time creating (even an arcadey) driving model.

Space Travel 15 by jk5000 2017-04-26T21:41:20Z

Wow, I found that strangely addicting. The graphics may be simple but the mental work you have do to optimize travel routes and passenger destinations to get the best result can be quite satisfying. It's practically a game ready for shipment on mobile devises or something, it's amazing it was done in two days. Bez nazwy-1.jpg

REDBOW by PixzleOne 2017-05-02T11:14:33Z

"Spiders are stupid" You said it, brother! The bastards cornered me and got me killed! Other than that liggle quirk, the game is really fun and cool. I like the animation on our protagonist and the idea of mixing a twinstick shooter with graphics worthy of a classic RPG is pretty cool.

World Destroyer by Move127 2017-04-26T17:08:11Z

I greatly enjoyed the game up until the pants-on-head retarded hard final level. It's infuriating in the good old unfair NES style and at the same time it shows some slight mistakes in design eg. buzzsaw hit box size and the delay on the jump which makes dodging many bullets an impossibility. The delay on the bomb seems a tad to long as well. But then again, this is definitely a great achievement for a LD compo project. The fact that many people point out - watching your own bullets was indeed very good and fun.

It's a Tiny World! by tinykidtoo 2017-05-02T10:53:43Z

Wow, a true-to-God rail shooter! Haven't played one of those in ages! The ride was bumpy so it was hard to get a good high score but I managed, I guess score2.png

The levels designed were cute. The characters were rather generic, but that would be the theme in a park ride!

Natantes Paradisum by strong99 2017-05-02T11:06:49Z

The game is pretty interesting. Love the art style. It's very cohesive and clear. The gameplay, while simple, has a lot of room for development, as other than maintaining a high ":)" rating and population, there is little to do after a few minutes of play. I just don't get one thing: "build forests to combat climate change" Haven't seen any such effect. It seems you have a missing feature. Oh and the music gets... a bit tedious after a while.

Paper traveller by dunin 2017-04-26T16:06:08Z

Truly a magnificent concept, worthy of exploring further (although, I'll be honest with you- puzzles like that are not my cup of tea). Execution is great as well.

The graphical style can be made even more authentic and with proper translation and editing of the puzzles, this can actually be a hit, if it isn't already, judging by the number of comments!

What I would change is the rate at which the paint brush lays down colour. It was a bit too much od a chore to fill an island IMO.

Bunosphere by torcado 2017-04-26T18:03:08Z

At first sight this looks like it's going to be one of the compo high scorers if not the winner. I love the style and puzzles. I love fuzzy bunnies, as most people do. But I can't stand the framerate or the presentation of this game. The fish-eye effect makes me neuseous, actually. Perhaps making the "bunosphere" a bit larger would alleviate that effect. A great technical feat, nonetheless.

TerminAnt by davikin92 2017-04-25T20:09:43Z

Let me tell ya. I actually want more. Way more. It looks as though you and your friends had a lot of fun while making this game. Everything about it screams MID NINETIES and I am nostalgic as hell about that era. The lo-fi look, the music, the level structure... it resonates with me. It's just... adequately cheesy, even though some of it is clearly very ad-hoc. The grappling hook could be a great mechanic, if you decided to use it. I was kinda annoyed with it breaking...

TerminAnt by davikin92 2017-04-26T17:12:32Z

@davikin92 Actually, you CAN use it as a weapon, although I imagine it's more of an error or something. It pushes enemies off the level!

Mana Farming Dimensiom by Unentokku 2017-04-26T14:00:04Z

There definitely is an idea there. The execution (the time constraints for sure) is far from perfect. The thing that's most annoying is the inability to cancel a connection when there is no location to connect to.

Slimes in Panic by KayZ 2017-04-25T15:26:21Z

I like the puzzle/planning element in road building. Cool concept IMO. Will you be adding missing features in future releases?

Ruler of Survival by Flying Cat of the Pepes 2017-04-26T13:19:55Z

Nicely done. for a 48 houe game it actually looks consistent and compelling. I think an alternative name for this could be Robinson Sims. I got that Maxis vibe from it.

While the camera requires tewaks, the rest of the game, with its limited scope, works well. The lack of an end goal other than survival makes the game get a bit repetitive, but the very act of juggling various resources and controlling their amount was fun.

You deserve great praise for that tutorial- it's something our team has neglected. Yours is an inspiration.

A Small World : Kar'kh attack by Vegevan 2017-04-25T18:02:51Z

I appreciate the cheesy voice acting. The christian imagery is pretty cool. The game itself... hard as hell!

Polar Protector by AlexHoratio 2017-04-26T14:59:14Z

The game is fast, fun and understandable, the graphics are nice and the controls are responsive. I don't really understend the mechanic behind losing health, otherwise a quick, cool experience.

A Small Earth by Skywilly 2017-04-26T14:48:56Z

You said it wasn't a game but it most definitely is! It's interactive, it's a game. You are hinting at the message in your blog post, so I won't spoil the surprise for others. It causes an emotional reaction- you succeeded at that for sure.

Planet Sustainment by aidenm125 2017-04-25T15:15:08Z

Sorry to hear about your illness. Get well soon. Hope to see you on the next jam.

Supernova by Veralos 2017-04-26T15:49:03Z

Fun game! I really liked the mission objective :D You rarely play as the 'bad guy', even if it's a cute robot on threads. Building heat shields to get to further levels was fun. The controls were crisp and responsive. Planet Barron was a nice challenge. Good fun. Rar$EXa0.035 26.APR.2017 - 17.44.58.28.jpg

Biomaria by Belin Fieldson 2017-04-26T14:18:32Z

Props for using actual biological nomenclature in your description, bros! Then again, I am pretty sure the pictures you used for the bacteriae are not accurate. The unfortunate thing is that the windows download is missing the 'biomario-0.0.1_Data' folder... The gameplay looks fun, I wanna play it!

Hypercube by county-agent 2017-04-26T23:04:56Z

One of my first concepts for a "small world" game was to make a puzzle game inside a facility reminiscent of the one that appears in the movie "Cube". I'm glad I didn't pursue the idea because you did it better than I ever would. While gathering items and placing them on the table doesn't constitute a puzzle, exploring the hypercube definilitely does! While the "game" is minimalistic, the style you created is surreal and intriguing. Good job! hail /agdg/ hyper.jpg

Pale Blue Dot by SneakyDeagle 2017-05-02T17:02:50Z

I love the idea, as much as I love this little excerpt from Sagan's book. I was underwhelmed with the execution, though. While it's a beautiful artistic representation of the celestial bodies in our Solar System, a more "realistic" art direction, one reminiscent of the actual Voyager flightpath and/or the Family Portrait photo series would be much more profound and true to Sagan's legacy.

Voyager_Portrait_Family_diagram[1].jpg

The game itself is nicely done, though, especially with such time constraints. Can't imagine how I would do it myself otherwise. High points for mood especially!

Lead the Ants by matita 2017-04-26T14:32:34Z

Ha, it's a pretty amazing idea to make an ant-based lemmings game! Leaving behind pheromones for other ants to discover is one of those "why didn't I ever think of that" ideas, ingenious yet simple. The footprints they leave behind look cool and it's interesting how they follow the player's/scout ant's path. The exploration could have been made more interesting, with more varied terrain perhaps?

kumo. by Turbo Hermit 2017-05-02T16:12:30Z

Quite an aesthetically pleasing experience. The mechanics are clear and understandable. Seeing the plants sprout and grow is pleasant, especially at the first seconds of play. The banality of the endeavour is quickly realised, unfortunately. The moment the whole planet is filled with plant life is cathartic.

It Shakes the World Apart by lectvs 2017-04-25T19:03:58Z

I like how the story, while simple, has a good moral and a heartwarming ending. The art style is rather cute as well.

SlimeWorld by nononick 2017-04-26T20:03:31Z

slimeworld.png /agdg/ is still has the brightest and most talented gamedevs. The clicker mechanics are fun, but the most impressive are the physics of the slime planet. You should underline in the description that this feat was achieved in GameMaker, which is quite something!

Rainbow Flower by CloudLunar 2017-04-26T14:07:00Z

Alright, I got to play the game! I love the surreal mood. The cute graphics mixed with a sanity system is something you don't expect but that grows on you.

Globe Trot by Richard Michael Smith 2017-05-01T18:13:38Z

This game is rad! Gotta love to pew pew your way through hordes of incoming enemies. I actually love how it can be played BOTH as a twinstick shooter and a classic shmup. In fact, once I decided to only go one way I had the most fun and the highest score. The final moments were intense. You could even add bullet hell elements if you wanted, although I would have an extremely hard time playing that! score.jpg Also, my wife says she'd play that on her phone.

Seagazer by Turncoda 2017-04-25T16:05:56Z

What a lovely game, what a great concept! I'm afraid it will be underrated, though.

I too love stargazing (and am annoyed with anyone who installs additional lighting in my area), this simple concept of quickly changing your lon/lat on a tiny planet to observe "Polaris" and the idea of using star & constellations for puzzles was excellent. I was "one step away" but I encountered the same problem I have in real life. I just couldn't find Aviana (like any other constellation irl) so the final piece of the puzzle remains elusive, or at least that's what it seems.

It is an excellent idea, though. One I would stick with. Especially that the simple geometry and graphics, darkness, ambience and the monolithic pillars achieve a very... primal? visceral? effect.

Not many people look at the sky anymore. Perhaps this will show them how beautiful an experience that is.

Seagazer by Turncoda 2017-04-26T22:31:00Z

@turncoda Please continue working on this project. You may always try to change the graphics to something less pixelated if you believe it would help create something more clear or readable. In one of my projects I also made a nice, starry skybox. Maybe that could be some inspiration. https://streamable.com/ai84y

Exploroka by krunoslav 2017-05-01T18:51:43Z

The game looks great, even with the simple hand-drawn sprites. It invokes memories of classic 90's strategy and god games for some reason. Truely lovely. It was fun to gather stars (I got 5), looking for the best biome to find them in, getting lost and wandering aimlessly. Oh, and I wish there was a zoom function to see the whole world. Would definitely look as amazing as on the picture you attached.

Stop CO2 by cremmy 2017-05-02T10:40:42Z

I like how the overarching theme is that you will lose in the end, with your power source slowly becoming insustainable (or at least it's near impossible to strike that balance). On the other hand, it's hell of a lot of fun to zap some ecoterrorists. The graphics are really cute, you clearly wanted to invoke the feel of SimCity 2000 and did a great job at it!

Ark Initiative by Teslov 2017-04-26T12:47:41Z

It's a cute toy, I really love the graphical style. A lot can be done with those concentric tiles. It's definitely something you should continue working on!

There's not much actual gameplay, though. It's fun to deploy animals and watch them frolic for sume time, yes. But checking their hunger levels is hard because of how they jump around and how fast the world spins. It seems that the animals don't breed, act according to their presumed place in the food chain (why don't herbivores graze on the grass? Why can't I feed bores with meat? Why aren't tigers feeding on other animals?) or stick to their biomes (why do all the animals go for lengthy swims?) - without that, there's not much of an ecosystem to maintain. Then again, I don't think so many features could have been added in 72 hours!

While at it's current state, the game is a zoo simulator or a tamagochi and not an ecosystem sim, I hope it will be one someday! It's a good foundation.

Ark Initiative by Teslov 2017-04-26T19:58:24Z

@teslov Well then, it seems your concept is exactly what I would love to see - it just needs to be executed better and the ecological effects/laws/educational content should be better visible. With enough work and dedication, it can become a new sim hit, Maxis style!

The Curious Adventures of Ant, the Inebriated Ant by tdennist 2017-04-26T16:21:20Z

I actually laughed out loud when I saw how drunk the ant is, haha! I love its little ant legs flapping while it moves. The controls are really cool, they fit the theme and the fact that our ant sticks to surfaces relatively well really helps. Didn't find the level design or controls unfair at all. I'm actually quite impressed that you managed to make them work so well and intuitively in just 48 hours! Really a great job. Thanks for the fun.

haha, harf mode is actually HARD! Love it! Fun little way to let off some steam by clicking your index finger off.

Destructo Island by morbidcamel101 2017-04-26T22:17:37Z

I liked how over the top the game was. All those effects! And I had fun shooting rockets like a madman at the poor drones. They actually seemed kinda harmless. I really liked slamming into the ground at the beginning. Made you feel powerful.

Unfortunately, using the laser didn't always work as often the game slowed down to an absolute 0 FPS crawl, as though there was some loop happening. It also caused the drones to... disappear. Blowing everything up was the only way to alleviate that problem.

This hell is too small for us all by RisinGoat 2017-05-17T07:26:58Z

Heh, I had fun with my wife for a few minutes. I really hope the sound effects were lovingly hand-crafted during a drinking session, because it really would fit the mischievous nature of the game. I really wonder how it would be to have 4 players have a go at it. Might start a drinking session of my own, with some friends, trying to throw each other to the abyss.

Once Upon a Spaceship by PixzleOne 2017-08-07T16:48:28Z

Bez tytułu.png While the dodging of incoming asteroids was fun, it did get repetitive after a while. The battery cranking minigame is what I was waiting for after a while. Don't know why mashing left and right was so satisfying.

JetPowered by bacontree 2017-08-07T17:25:02Z

1.png 2.png

Cute game. The model's pretty good looking! The animations should perhaps have a bit more "oompf" to them, especially considering how destructive the blades are. I like the shenanigans you can have with the simple AI chasing you while you fly.

ElectroSheep by kalinka 2017-08-07T17:36:15Z

Very cute idea, nice graphics. The gameplay brings annoyment tough. With ehe relatively unresponsive controls, small objective trigger size and the sheep being being almost as dumb as in real life, the amazing concept that I think should be a hit falls a bit flat. With a little work, I will be the first buying this for casual fun. For more chaos, cooperative or competitive multiplayer would be an amazing idea.

Light Source by Valter 2017-08-02T21:47:34Z

Wow, interesting game you got there. A tiny and cute Splinter Cell with a timer. Those volumetric lights look excellent. Inspiring even!

I wish all the decoration meshes could be jumped on. More verticality would add a lot to the game- unless I missed something, which is possible. I would like to play more of Light Source, but I got stuck. Got any tips on completing the game? The wallclimb seems a bit erratic, I guess this causes the difficulty to rise for me.

Goblin Hunter by saulodaniel 2017-08-07T17:46:05Z

I remember this game just after the ratings started. I couldn't wait to play it. Unfortunately, your description is far from what the game actually is. The twinstick controls don't really work well in melee combat. I was actually expecting physics-based Hammerfight-style combat. I got a fun, yet a bit too simple brawler with the weapon not always connecting. Please try making a physics-based combat system! It will be the best thing ever!

Electric Trouble by IC_Sundays 2017-08-07T17:13:31Z

For a simple game, it's a cool idea. I think some mechanic for increasing the number of traps would be cool. As you mentioned, balancing would be needed, although with some reliable trap placement, perhaps even at current increments, higher scores and levels could be achieved.

Lost At Sea by hfitzwater 2017-08-07T16:52:55Z

Works on Chrome! I'm sorry I can't really say much about the gameplay as I don't own a Vive.

Jazzy Beats by Moski 2017-12-06T21:36:14Z

Nice and cute. Jazzchan mai waifu. The art is lovely, the music isn't exactly what I'd expect from a K/J-pop inspired soundtrack but it's very pleasant to listen to and fits the characters. The gameplay is a bit simplistic, spam abilities until you convert all the fans, wait for Bluessom to send them back to you. Winning was fun, though.

Mr. Gigafist: a post-apocalyptic brawling adventure by Shodanon 2017-12-05T22:05:59Z

@lancejz Thanks, man! I guess I had the black knight's flesh wound in the back of my head when making the gibs.

@corndog That is a valid tactic, requiring just as much cunning as fighting the raiders head-on. Thanks for playing.

@slavicgames Thank you. How would you like the scene be made learer? We were hoping to achieve a clean look for the environment but the chaos among characters is intentional.

@yancouto It's available now! Hope it works...

Shadow and Planet by LanceJZ 2017-12-06T19:31:58Z

Gaining momentum with the spaceship was really cool, I enjoy the feeling of speed, although stopping wasn't easy after that. The minimap was a really cool feature. Perhaps the difficulty should be tweaked a bit as it took me standing still and many enemy missiles to take my ship out.

Master Farmer by SlavicGames 2017-12-06T20:11:06Z

Cute, relaxing game. Gets you into a routine, a trance of shearing, selling the wool, buying new sheep, punching wolves in the face, rince, repeat. I guess living on a farm makes me a natural. This is as far as I got until now: SHEEP.png:

Wife + relaxing = child is true wisdom

oh, and I love the different looks for the kids and sheep

RIP all the fluffy bois that died because of my negligence and wolves

Skillshot Arena by greg 2017-12-06T22:45:56Z

Really cool. Both evokes memories of good ol' arena shooters as they should be (rather unforgiving) and fits the theme perfectly. The final balls are excrutiating. Best score I got was 23 frags for target attack. Loved the idea of the blue lighting gun. Really tests the tracking skill.

Sniper Protector (re uploaded) by ostoru 2017-12-06T19:29:58Z

Good stuff. Shooting the 0% cool guys from the top of the building is enjoyable, although zooming in feels a bit abrupt and acquiring the target requires practice. The option to jump out of the building and either go exploring or switch to close combat is even more fun.

The models are great, the city is beautiful. Good job.

Paya's Milk Run by Corndog 2017-12-06T19:37:11Z

Heh, I missed reading the instructions and gathered the kitties instead ;) After that, I went for the pupper and stormed to the shop with 35 seconds to spare. Cool, enjoyable and bug-free experience.Untitled-4.png
