Awesome! I love this game... the concept and the art style are just amazing! Keep up the good work!

astrkl 2017-04-24 17:07

Amazing concept, and cool execution ! I feel the hint should be a bit more clear, but great job

richard-michael-smith 2017-04-25 11:10

This is a great idea for a game. Is there a way I can reset a level? I have drawn stuff and made a mistake and I would like to clear and retry.

widdershinscrustacean 2017-04-25 11:22

Oh hey this was an awesome idea! I especially liked that you could scribble as much detail as you wanted (the customers may not like my maps but by god they will be pretty ;D )

Only improvement I can think of is maybe ask someone to proofread the text?

takusan 2017-04-25 12:44

Awesome idea. Keep it up! Text needs proofreading, but that's about it, great entry.

ema1ih 2017-04-25 12:55

I had fun, I like the art, it's a good idea for a game!

dunin 2017-04-26 05:47

Thanks all for feedbacks! @richard-michael-smith : just submit your map and can restart level. @widdershinscrustacean & @takusan : I know it needs proofreading, it's hard to write a game in a foreign language... I will search for someone to correct it...

avavt 2017-04-26 10:41

I just realized I have no potential as navigator...

Amazing concept with fitting art style. Despite having to draw more than 10 times just to pass 2nd level I'm loving the game!

I would love either an undo or an eraser feature, but I guess in the old day of paper&pen cartography they don't really have them do they?

shodanon 2017-04-26 16:06

Truly a magnificent concept, worthy of exploring further (although, I'll be honest with you- puzzles like that are not my cup of tea). Execution is great as well.

The graphical style can be made even more authentic and with proper translation and editing of the puzzles, this can actually be a hit, if it isn't already, judging by the number of comments!

What I would change is the rate at which the paint brush lays down colour. It was a bit too much od a chore to fill an island IMO.

simonhutchinson 2017-04-28 23:01

Very cool and ambitious concept. I had to switch over to the regular font, just because I was driving myself a bit crazy.

It's really challenging, and I think that stems from the originality--no one needs a tutorial for a twin-stick shooter. Nice work.

anarbitrarymustache 2017-04-29 20:00

Really liked the idea and execution! I very quickly found out why you had the "change font" button on the menu - good addition. I noticed a comment above about English not being your native language. There were a couple of the puzzles that could have benefited from improved translation. You should definitely continue to explore and polish this idea.

richard-michael-smith 2017-05-01 09:49

I've just rated your game. Good luck!

ratking 2017-05-01 12:58

Really great idea for a game. I also like the execution a lot. I didn't hear any audio though, I wonder what the problem was.

takusan 2017-05-01 13:09

I've added rating in addition to my earlier feedback. Cheers!

for-science 2017-05-01 17:30

This is a very pretty game (thank you for the change font option) with well done puzzles. I like how the brush reacts to the paper  and how the art style fits the theme of the game.

Nice game! Keep it up!

arcticmattekar 2017-05-02 09:45

I like the puzzle mechanic and the fitting art style. I had fun puzzling

dunin 2017-05-04 14:24

Hey, thank all for feedbacks!

@avavt: well, no eraser for ink... That's a part of the fun I think...

@shodanon: The brush is big for one reason: To win, it's better to have more land than few. When not, people (who tested the game, next to me) drew tiny island...

@simonhutchinson: Maybe a twin-stick cartographer game could be an idea...

@anarbitrarymustache: Yes, I had to write directly in English (due to lack of time) and so I could not express everything I wanted (due to lack of vocabulary)...

@richard-michael-smith) & @takusan: Thanks, I don't have time last week to check your entries, but now, I will be able to do it...

@ratking: There are few sounds: a music during the main menu, but after, only small effects (pen, brush, stamp) and random ambiance sounds (creaking, yawning...)

@for-science & @arcticmattekar: :thumbsup:

foya 2017-05-04 21:56

The concept is interesting, maybe one of the most original ones fitting in the theme 'small world'! I really like the atmosphere you created with just a few sounds and the ink art style. But I'm terrible as a cartographer so at the end, I just drew whatever I wanted ... :)

yyam 2017-05-05 14:46

Great concept, and well executed too! Enjoyable puzzles :)

icewind 2017-05-05 15:24

The art style and concept are really cool! Very immersive and thematic. But for me it was sometimes not really clear what was meant.

zondarg 2017-05-05 19:37

What an amazing concept, very original! The scrawly inky ancient art style is very fitting and the audio with the scraping brush, the yawning and other little noises is great :) But obviously I should never work as a cartographer.

gertjohnny 2017-05-05 20:08

The premise is super interesting - once I got past the first level it was pretty clear how to play, but I was lost up until that point. I totally botched my first map, so having it be automatically pencilled in to show you what's going on was a nice touch! I ended up just making my own map for fun in the end.

samusoidal 2017-05-05 21:46

Great concept and art style, but the puzzles (the second map) stumped me... Good job!

lukuluk 2017-05-06 11:46

Bright idea for a game! And really good job for a compo game! I also liked the plot, the small stories and the presence you give to the player by their goal and the discussions with the father.

I have some feedbacks for improvements: Like other people, I found it really difficult to be accurate. Perhaps some tools would be helpful?

For example, I think it could be better if you could measure distances on the map, or orientation. So it could be a simple ruler that you would have as a tool, and click to rotate it around 45° angles.

As the default font is very hard to read, I think it would be better to have a much visible font as a default font, or to be able to change it during the game (I had to restart the game to change it :/ )

dunin 2017-05-09 09:22

@foya @icewind @zondarg @gertjohnny @samusoidal : I publish a walkthrough if you want to see how the maps are. A thing is important to know: it's better to have bigger land than smaller..

@lukuluk : Thank for big feedback! If I do a post compo, I will improve few things... Initially I planned to do a compass tool, but I wanted to simplify. Maybe too much...

dick-claus 2017-05-09 09:53

Very beautiful and nice game. Drawing maps looks like real.

The only thing I was able to solve only first map. Next level was difficult.

But very pretty. :sailboat:

rongo-matane 2017-05-10 21:05

Great idea! The visuals are really nice, the maps look very good. I agree with those who came before me: i cannot finish the second level, i have too little feedback on what might have gone wrong in my map. But i have to admit i skipped the tutorial...drawing with 2 pens sounds easy enough, i don't want to read 5 pages, i want to draw :D

Very cool entry! I can really imagine that this can be succesful as a "grown" game, because it's so original.

scriptorum 2017-05-10 21:21

Good looking game and an interesting concept! Drawing in the land with brush is really satisfying. The text descriptions in the puzzles were a little confusing. For instance:

> I navigate along it one day more in the direction of North-East, but now I can see the beach where I first arrived

According to the walk through this meant I was supposed to draw a line from the NE end point to the spot where you first find land, but didn't understand that's what you meant by it.

The pen tool was less fun to use. Maybe add a ruler tool? So you could measure out one day northeast before drawing. You are obviously better at drawing free hand with the mouse than me, I found it tough - I would rather unlock "stencils" which I could use to adorn the map. Anyhow, great entry!

teslov 2017-05-10 21:50

That was so immersive! From random yawning to sounds of tools scratching on paper.

My maps were always a day wrong when it came to landing on islands. I don't know why but I couldn't find information about how exactly long landing took place. But it's just me, I'm not very smart when it comes to reading.

Art was amazing, writing was good, sounds and music was fitting perfectly. Truly amazing work.

2017-05-11 15:52

Very nice concept! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmUpejMpTcM

unclechris 2017-05-11 18:36

I enjoyed the game, the concept was REALLY good. And reading the logs was quite interesting, since the dates on the logs didn't always match up to the dates in the descriptions. A log entry on Wed saying we travel one day and will be there, meant we will be there Thursday, but the Friday date on the log entry meant two days travel, which the help for the first map gave. So it was very interesting. Not sure the second one has the right map directions, and translating can be a difficulty. I REALLY liked this concept, and felt very immersed.

Please continue to work on this game, I have a friend who is an actual cartographer and know he would love playing this game! A little procedural generation would make for endless play.

anna16 2017-05-19 06:08

Very interesting idea! I would play hours in it. I hope you will make more stories for the following parts!

mortus 2017-05-19 16:35

Until today I was oblivious enough to not realize that people who comment on my game and don't have a game of their own listed are actually part of a team, gotta catch up and rate all the games I've missed!

Great idea and a solid implementation from what I can see by looking at a tutorial level. Love the sounds. If you expand the game I'd love to see more proofreading on the texts though, because lines like "I left this sad town tomorrow morning" leave me wondering what actually happened there and when, which is critical for such game. It got much harder than I thought it will be really fast, actually the second level was too hard for me. (looking at the walkthrough) Ohh... That's totally not how I got that diary. He saw the beach all the way back, that makes sense, I think. That's what I got:wonderfullMap.png

He started going east, then followed along the coast and had to turn back to travel NE and still see the starting point.

Edit: also, it would be cool to get 3-4 journals and cross-reference them for a more complex level.
