Nicely done. for a 48 houe game it actually looks consistent and compelling. I think an alternative name for this could be Robinson Sims. I got that Maxis vibe from it.

While the camera requires tewaks, the rest of the game, with its limited scope, works well. The lack of an end goal other than survival makes the game get a bit repetitive, but the very act of juggling various resources and controlling their amount was fun.

You deserve great praise for that tutorial- it's something our team has neglected. Yours is an inspiration.

Shodanon- Thank you! I came up with the name in the last few minutes, so I wasn't trying to think of a good name but at least it's better than "Game by Me: The game where you keep people alive and stuff". But I shouldn't change it now, because there might be people who have already played my game and want to come back to it once searching for games is available, and searching for it wouldn't work if I changed the name.

If what you're talking about with the camera is that left click is also used for putting wood in fires, etc, and it should be right click, then I agree that right click is better. But in the web build with right click a menu would popup every time I tried to move the camera with right click. So I had to change it to left click. Then I didn't want anyone downloading the windows version after the web version to get confused with the controls if the web build used left click and the windows build used right click. So I just changed both of them to left click.

I actually completely agree with you that it should not be a sandbox game, but I didn't think I had enough time to add a win state and level unlocking etc, by the time I needed to add either a sandbox-type gameplay or win states etc. If I have time to work on the game soon, I will definitely remove the Sandbox gameplay from the levels. I might still have a few special levels that are sandbox, but that won't be the whole game.

I'm sorry the game didn't have much content, I had plans for unlocking the people's knowledge of how to eat etc with coins, and having animals they could hunt and much more, but I had to cut my ideas WAY down once I realized I didn't have nearly enough time. Again, if I have more time to work on it, I will add more content.

I was worried that people would think the tutorial was too long, so I put a few jokes in it here and there, and made it super interactive. I'm glad you liked it!

Sorry for the long reply, but thank you for commenting!

The graphics remind me of Parappa the rapper. I couldn't quite get used to the controls though :-)

Original concept, whith a bit confusing controls though. With a bit more polishing this could be an interesting game.

I agree with you guys that the controls are kind of hard to use, but could you give me a suggestion on how to improve them? Thanks!

cosmic-adventure-squad 2017-05-02 06:12

I like the flat graphics. Wasn't sure if I was doing things correctly, but my guy seemed to stay alive.

flying-cat-of-the-pepes 2017-05-02 16:28

Your people are alive as long as they still have health displayed, and are standing upright. When they die, all of their hunger and health points are no longer shown and they fall down, and stop moving. Thanks for the feedback!

The tutorial is a beast.

Overall the game is pretty interesting. Though the controls are a little weird it doesn't take too long to get used to them. The graphics are pretty cute. I like the mixture of 2d and 3d.

Thank you for your feedback, Move127, I appreciate it!

This was a neat idea. I didn't last very long :P

Nice game! Very ambitious for a compo game, and I liked the overall feel of the game. I would have really liked for a more succinct tutorial, just teaching controls. I prefer to learn through gameplay and experimentation rather than reading a block of text. I think your game communicated 80% of what needed to be said in that tutorial through the graphics and interface. Great job.

If you have time, I would greatly appreciate a review on my game here:

Interesting concept. You were wondering about the controls. The camera doesn't really need to be in "fps"-mode. If you only need the camera to focus on the small island, you could anchor it's center to the island and then the sideways camera controls would just circle the point of focus. That might make the camera a little bit easier.

Cheers for the original idea :)

I could maybe use a vote as well :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/jar-of-life

To be honest, i first skipped the tutorial because it was just to long for my taste. I felt a little overwhelmed by the length of the text in each textbox. In the game I had no idea what to do. I thought pressing 1, 2 or 3 on the keyboard would give me the chance to put trees down, but that didn't work. :)

So back to the Tutorial, this time I read anything and knew what to do. At this stage I really enjoyed the game and played for quite some time.

I think the tutorial and the controls could scare of many players. Thats a pity because as soon as I understood the game, i really liked it. My suggestions to improve the experience are: - Make the tutorial smaller, maybe show the mechanics through gameplay, and learn one thing a a time, instead of everything in one big tutorial. - The controls are a bit strange because you have to let go of the mouse to choose something to build. I think it would be easier to play if the player could plant trees and fire by pressing the associated number keys.

Thats it. Apart from these suggestions I really like the idea of this game. The mixture of 3D and 2D graphics works nicely and the big amount of content in this entry is really impressive for two days of work. Well done!

P.S.: I think constructive feedback is great and would like to see more on my game too. if want to give it a try, here it is: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/classical-conditioning-cooperation-ccc

Proper cheeky tutorial you got there. ;P I feel like you over explain some of the concepts, it could do with being a lot more concise. I appreciate you having a tutorial in there at all though since jammers don't always have time to fit one in!

I like the look of flat character in a 3D environment, though I feel that they should rotate with the camera so you can see them at all times, otherwise it can get tricky. The little speech bubbles are charming too.

Cycling through the option with the arrows keys is a bit awkward. I think it might've been easier if perhaps you could map them to the number keys or let the player click to select them.

There's a lot in this game, I was surprised to see so many different levels. Nice job!

vivoubos 2017-05-18 21:21

Haha, very funny game :) Especially the tutorial!

Maybe some objective per level will be good.

I had trouble with the Windows version downloaded. Good work
