Played for a good 15 minutes. Was addicting.

move127 2017-04-24 01:30

@gregory Thanks, that's great to hear.

longchamps 2017-04-24 16:50

I like that your bullets can hurt you after orbiting around the planet. It makes you think about each shot you take. I ran into a couple bugs. One where I was constantly flying around the planet and another where I got stuck on the edge of a box.

move127 2017-04-24 18:37

@longchamps

Thanks!

In one of the levels the goal is to fly around the planet. On the rest, I don't want that to happen, but it should still be possible to complete the level by thinking outside the box. That other bug has been pissing me off since I started making the game, but I'm new to Physics in Unity and couldn't fix it in a timely manner.

banana-man 2017-04-26 02:04

Nice game! Some cool mechanics and I really enjoyed the unicorns out of nowhere!

takusan 2017-04-26 15:36

Okay, this is great. Good idea and fun mechanics, especially with the bullet making trips around the planets :). Only thing I'd change is the bomb button (RMB instead of B), but I guess that's just for mouse / keyboard, and on a pad it would be much easier.

You've made a very interesting game, simple, yet comple enough to keep playing. I'd love to see a more fleshed-out version, it could really hit off.

Cheers, and thanks for your feedback you left for my game!

move127 2017-04-26 15:50

@banana-man The unicorns were born from me randomly placing pixels until I had something that looked like an animal.

move127 2017-04-26 15:51

@takusan I'm definitely planning on releasing a flushed out version after LD. I had so much fun playing it I want more levels

shodanon 2017-04-26 17:08

I greatly enjoyed the game up until the pants-on-head retarded hard final level. It's infuriating in the good old unfair NES style and at the same time it shows some slight mistakes in design eg. buzzsaw hit box size and the delay on the jump which makes dodging many bullets an impossibility. The delay on the bomb seems a tad to long as well. But then again, this is definitely a great achievement for a LD compo project. The fact that many people point out - watching your own bullets was indeed very good and fun.

jk5000 2017-04-26 17:47

I love that you have played around with a lot of different game mechanics. And both the music and graphics is good for this game. Okay the game needs a bit of polishing, but to be hornets nearly all game jam games needs polish. Overall a super great LD game.

richard-michael-smith 2017-04-27 00:17

One thing that you definitely got right (in my opinion) is the difficulty level. It was just hard enough that I had to retry levels and get my timings right - but not too hard that I got annoyed. I didn't make it to the final level but I did see the unicorns! :grinning:

avavt 2017-04-27 09:11

I love the idea of permanent projectiles! Make you think carefully before you shoot.

Some problem I have is with the bomb randomly rolling, it's almost impossible to get it where I wanted, especially during panic rush it's quite frustrating.

The physics was a bit buggy but playable, and the idea was delivered well. I'm truly humbled by the sheer amount of contents that you created in just 48 hours.

Overall was a good game with cool idea, but the bugs need to be fixed and probably on a smaller embed size (my laptop screen wasn't large enough to see the whole game)

fouralex 2017-04-27 11:14

Hey, good game, I had some bugs, but I like the concept : destroy everything on planets with different game mechanics. Maybe the graphics could have been more polished, but 48 hours is really short :)

la-mecanique-du-plastique 2017-04-27 13:03

Good, maybe the game does not have the best graphics possible but I must admit that the way Winston communicates with other extraterrestrial species, and especially the trees, is ... interesting. I particularly liked my first game in which I committed suicide by shooting myself in the back, a special way to die ^ ^. Sometime the character stay stuck in the ground, and the last level is really hard, I succeeded, but so hard. Nice job, bravo !

move127 2017-04-27 13:06

@shodanon Thanks for the comment! I definitely need to tweak some of the hitboxes and jumping speed. The final level was the last thing I did, since I thought I needed something final for the game. To be honest, I'm just happy people are playing it through to the final level.

move127 2017-04-27 13:08

@avavt I definitely underestimated how hard it would be to get the physics right. Thanks for your comment!

move127 2017-04-27 13:09

@la-mecanique-du-plastique Thanks for the comment! I'm so happy to hear that you beat the last level. I didn't expect anyone to.

versatile-box 2017-04-27 22:22

I had a lot of fun! It pretty hard to get used to the mechanics, but it's a great game after you do. I'd definitely polish this.

maggardjosh 2017-04-28 21:55

This was pretty good! You definitely need to tweak some of the physics stuff, not being able to move after jumping and seemingly random bomb rolling was a little frustrating. Other than that though, this was a fun game!

simonhutchinson 2017-04-29 14:32

Great concept.

When I was first brainstorming for the compo, I wanted to have something similar to this with the tiny world, but I realized that I had no idea how to do it! Nice work.

automatonvx 2017-04-30 00:11

Cool game, the core game play is fun and quite interesting, The bullets orbiting round to kill you and the slight confusion of when you are trying to do things upside down works well. I didn't complete it though got frustrated on the level with all the aliens at different heights as I couldn't see the difference between the bullets and the sky. The crazy power up jump seemed too much also. Enjoyed playing, definitely got potential, good job. edit - couldn't resist going back for some more, those later levels get really crazy (in a good way). Only gave up when the physics bugs trapped me in the floor damnit. Cool music also, just maybe put it on continuous loop though instead of restarting at each level, hearing the same one second when you keep dying is not fun. Loved it

jushiip 2017-04-30 02:50

Some feedback: The player physics feel a bit funky. Sometimes my jump was acting really weird, like it was slingshotting me really high up. Also, the bomb physics are a bit inconsistent. In this one level with the unicorns I tried to leave bomb next to the enemy spawner without success. The bombs just kept rolling away, even though sometimes they stay still?

Other than that, well done! It's a fun little platformer. I liked when I tried spamming the gun to easily kill all enemies - and then realized that the bullets also kill my character. :D

querk 2017-04-30 10:08

Nice graphics and good music, great idea, and hard to do mechanics, good job and great game: D (sorry for my bad english)

m-1 2017-04-30 10:49

Nice! It took me a while to figure out the controls (T to teleport to the next level.) Maybe I have overlooked something?

The levels are challenging and rewarding when passed. Congratulations on making a fun game and thanks for sharing!

P.S. here you have have some :unicorn: :unicorn: :unicorn:

samurai-spark 2017-04-30 11:22

Enjoyable gameplay with hard mechanics. The physics are a bit weird but that just increase the difficult : ) I like how you need to destroy everything on the planet to finish the level. And to be shot by your own bullet is just ridiculous  I think the sprites are good but the planets needs a makeover.

Summary it's a good entry for the LD! Keep it up!

jeremy-ryan 2017-05-01 04:24

Fun theme. Level progression is reasonable but not slow. The physics are a little wacky but then again the game as a whole is, haha.

iron-leonem 2017-05-01 04:32

Looks like it's been said before, but you've made a great game here. The permanent bullets offer a uniquely creative answer to the problem of spamming bullets. The one thing I did dock you a couple points on is your audio- You should probably not have the song reset every time the player died, but instead play continually throughout the level. Still, excellent game, well done!

themonsterfromthedeep 2017-05-01 04:50

I like the raw mechanics of this game, including the fact that bullets go around the globe to kill you. That particular mechanic contributes a sort of puzzle mechanic to the game, which is nice.

My main concern is a lot of frustration with the game - most of this comes with control problems and glitches, but some of it comes from unfair level design.

Part of the problem with the controls is due to the basic game design - the arrows control angular direction, which is basically the only option, but I often found myself using the spacial direction I wanted to go, which happened to be the wrong way. Perhaps this could be fixed by keeping the player still at the top of the screen, and having the world rotate...?

The other problem was that jumping did not seem to respond correctly - the first level with the jump boost I lost several times because I went up against the wall, and tried to jump, and couldn't maneuver past the wall, even while in air.

There were also several glitches. I got stuck in walls multiple times. One time an enemy started flying where I couldn't shoot it. In all cases I had to restart the level, which often meant re-doing difficult things for no reason - in a game with difficulty like this one, restarting better be due to player error and not due to the game being broken - because otherwise it's simply not fun to play.

Finally, although I think most of the difficult is at an acceptable level, the cyclops spawners level is, I think, simply unfair - for me it might well be impossible, as I can seriously see no way to beat it.

If some of these issues were fixed, I believe I would enjoy this game several times better.

quoclon 2017-05-01 04:52

I found the learning curve on this game to be very well paced. I liked the puzzles, and the combination of bombs/bullets was neat. The levels were laid out in a way where I had a sense of what needed to be accomplished. I had a couple of glitches where the charater would jump very high, and then much lower, on the same level and inconsistently. However, overall I would say this was a solid submission.

Thanks again for checking out my game Sling Ship: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/sling-ship-search-for-a-small-world

Cheers!

littlerain 2017-05-01 04:52

I can't get past first level, I kill the alien and then nothing happens?

Edit: Wasn't full screen couldn't see dialogue. Very fun too, the bullets orbiting is genius.

iak 2017-05-01 06:13

Hey this was pretty fun. I like how the shots orbit around indefinitely, there were some bugs as other people already mentioned, but it's easy enough to just kill yourself when stuck so no issue. I personally avoided making a physics engine like this, but you've done a pretty good job getting it to work fairly well!

That said, don't even think about sending Winston to our small planet. He's not welcome.

jk5000 2017-05-01 08:30

I have now also rated your game.

richard-michael-smith 2017-05-01 10:44

Ratings given!

takusan 2017-05-01 12:44

Since the voting is up, I've added rating to my earlier feedback. Cheers!

chronosv2 2017-05-01 14:15

Really neat game. The added mechanics as time went on was cool, though I personally struggled with the level with all the varying alien heights. That's a problem on my end, though, so keep up the great work!

liquidbrain 2017-05-01 14:43

Wow, the humor..! Amazing. I had a few good laughs in the beginning of this game.

I totally see what you mean with trying to make a polished game. We went for the polished look on ours but it ended up lacking content which, as you said, you were afraid of.

About your game. I'm really impressed of how many different levels you managed to make. It was a really fun play. Although, as you said, it's not that polished. BUT, I would love for you to develop this game further because I think this is an original and a great idea for a game.

Also, thanks for your feedback on [Infecteria](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/infecteria)! Yes, we will be adding a story mode were you infect different organs and such.

Really nice and solid entry. You created interesting levels and I think they're nice balanced. It was easy to play at the beginning but harder with every level. The mechanic of granades it's a bit tricky. It sometimes rolls a bit but not always and it's hard to estimated where to place it. Well done ;)

gozz 2017-05-01 16:57

Pretty solid game, I had fun.

Graphics are simple but good and the sounds are effective. Thanks for playing my game and commented it by the way.

See ya' :)

brotherst 2017-05-01 22:10

Fun game! The bullet orbiting the earth was a great idea, I don't think too many games make use of the double edged sword mechanic. Reminds me of the disc gun in Super Crate Box. The intro was very funny. I reckon polish this one up and enlist the help of an artist and you're onto a winner. The only thing I'd suggest is to not have the player always jump in an inescapable arc. Also sometimes the jump physics went a little weird, which I think other people may have mentioned so I won't go into too much detail about that. Other than that everything was really solid!

Also, thanks for playing our game! If you have a free moment I hope you'll revisit to give us a score!

Thanks! Rob

kristian-david 2017-05-02 15:27

I love the idea of the game that the bullets orbits the problem and it is permanent. Great Game!

wheerd 2017-05-02 16:24

Nice game with a cool mechanic. I like that the bullet goes around and can potentially kill you as well. This makes it more punishing if you miss a shot. My only problem with it is that the projectiles are barely visible against the sky, so they can be hard to evade. The graphics are solid for a LD entry and there is quite a lot of levels with different mechanics. I really like how you introduced more mechanics one by one with a good learning curve. This definitely has some potential and I would like to see a more polished version

bryan-livingston 2017-05-02 18:34

I could only shoot the first guy.

move127 2017-05-02 19:05

@bryan-livingston You probably missed the text at the top of the screen. Make sure to play it in fullscreen.

picapica 2017-05-02 19:10

I liked it! NIce simple mechanics that made interesting problems. But had to stop after a few levels when I got too frustrated by my mistakes. I'm not very good at games that demand timing and coordination, my brain kept going the wrong way when I was on the "bottom" half of the world, so I can't really blame the game for that. I appreciated that you could shoot yourself in the back if you weren't careful, that's a nice moral to a horrible world destroying story!

piotrek 2017-05-02 19:24

Nice game. I like the mechanics, and difficulty level. As for post-compo version you should focus on adding more animations and polishing graphics. Also adding few more UI elements would definitely increase game's readability. I'm looking forward to see polished version.

aaranos 2017-05-03 01:57

Pretty enjoyable game. Simple mechanics with so many levels. I even got distracted on one level to see how many lasers I could put in orbit and still not die. That fact alone makes this a great game to me.

The audio is repetitive but it doesn't get annoying.

Well done on this.

samusoidal 2017-05-03 22:36

Very addicting game! The audio was super repetitive, though, and some of the levels (especially the first one with the jump powerup) were just too hard. Overall, good job!

2017-05-04 11:55

Neat game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15RvXBjxVuU&feature=youtu.be

morrilet 2017-05-05 02:05

I think that this game started with a cool concept (bullets hitting you if they go all the way around), but it added too much content too fast. It felt like there was a new 'thing' every level, instead of further exploring the existing mechanics. Maybe exploring more mechanics to do with altering the bullets path would've helped pull a little more juice from it? I would've liked to see more of the early gameplay, but all things considered I think this was a pretty alright entry. The art and music worked pretty well together, too. Good work.

cerno-b 2017-05-08 20:07

I very much liked the concept of having to be careful with your bullets because every shot could come back to haunt you. That instantly clicked with me. Unfortunately you didn't expand on this idea and went in a different direction, keeping the revolving bullets as an afterthought instead of the central design idea.

What you created was fun to play anyway. I got to level 13 and appreciated that you added trophies. That hive on the pedestal really tested my patience until I had to give up. It felt unfair, because there was no indication about when there would be an enemy coming out of the hive, so it was more a matter of luck. What didn't help was that the keyboard layout wasn't at all pleasant to use. I prefer my keys next to each other, not all over the place. You could have gotten rid of the beam-me-up key, as that didn't add much to the game, but required the player to keep track of another key.

What I really liked was that the game reset you instantly (like Super Meat Boy and Hotline Miami do). For games where it's all about quick reflexes, that's great way of keeping the player motivated. Another are special effects like screenshake, which would have worked great with your entry.

All in all it's a solid entry with a very good premise, which I think deserves a second approach *revolving* (hurr hurr) around the theme of "don't shoot yourself in the foot".

csanyk 2017-05-16 04:08

I got to about the fourth level, where the enemies spawn out of the little mountain. I couldn't figure out how to blow it up with the bombs.

In fullscreen it seems that the instructions text gets cut off at the top of the screen.

superbusyrobot 2017-05-17 05:40

I also like the orbiting bullet mechanic, and was kind of wondering if someone would eventually do something like that. However, I do think that you probably should have slowed down a little more on the graphics. The jumping controls also seemed kind of excessive at times, and it was a bit jarring at first. I do like the level design a lot, but it was sometimes difficult to trigger the warp beam after clearing a stage, which can be a bit of a nuisance after a while.

My overall recommendation next time would probably be to try and get the hang of doing more detailed objects and repeatable textures calmly, because otherwise the mechanics were pretty fun and it kept me engaged for a little while trying to finish each little puzzle without accidentally killing myself.
