LD38 — A Small World

Buzzing Through the Blooms by violinistsMetronome 2017-05-16T02:36:14Z

Very fun game, and I enjoy the upgrade system between levels. I have no idea what the third bonus does, exactly, and I assume it's probably responsible for the extra power-up blip I keep hearing once in a while even when it seems like I'm not collecting something, or else that may possibly be a bug.

Otherwise, though, I really enjoy it. Ramping up the number of wasps and pollen nodes for each level was a good design choice, although with a bit of practice radial detection on enemies becomes pretty easy to evade. Occasionally introducing faster units can often solve that problem, though, and mix things up a bit.

Good stuff, though! Definitely has an arcade sort of feel to it, and I also enjoy that the levels don't abruptly end and you have to keep returning to your hive to collect pollen. That plus the time limit is a smart way to eventually end the game even if it is sort of meant to go on for a long time.

Sex is Nature by chauchau 2017-05-16T00:49:17Z

Might win an award for the world's trippiest Snake game. Enjoyable, but once you start to collect a lot of the orbs, it seems to get less easy to pick up other orbs as your snake and orbs get bigger.

This leads to a lot of cases where you have to repeatedly coil yourself up just to pick up one orb, and navigating the landscape with the odd camera angles is challenging enough.

Command Ant Conquer by JuDelCo 2017-05-16T19:07:14Z

Yeah, this is getting a very high rating from me. I love the blend of 2D and 3D going on here, the soundtrack is very appropriate and not annoying, and the gameplay mechanics are pretty solid and engaging. I would actually like to play this multiplayer with some friends sometime, and I really enjoy how nicely all the grouping and control stuff works.

Overall, really fantastic work here. Definitely keep it up!

World Destroyer by Move127 2017-05-17T05:40:23Z

I also like the orbiting bullet mechanic, and was kind of wondering if someone would eventually do something like that. However, I do think that you probably should have slowed down a little more on the graphics. The jumping controls also seemed kind of excessive at times, and it was a bit jarring at first. I do like the level design a lot, but it was sometimes difficult to trigger the warp beam after clearing a stage, which can be a bit of a nuisance after a while.

My overall recommendation next time would probably be to try and get the hang of doing more detailed objects and repeatable textures calmly, because otherwise the mechanics were pretty fun and it kept me engaged for a little while trying to finish each little puzzle without accidentally killing myself.

Feather Fighter by Ellian 2017-05-16T04:21:42Z

Good stuff here, and the controls are fairly nice. It does make you spend a lot of time always pointing up, which can make it hard to move sometimes, but otherwise they're not too loose or anything and it helps a lot for avoiding deaths.

If you do happen to fall down to the lower levels, though, it's very hard to recover from that and difficult to jump up and hit low-flying birds horizonally too, and I feel like improving the player's jump height a little bit probably wouldn't be game-breaking.

Ruined Topology by jebouin 2017-05-16T18:42:14Z

Really love a lot of the level design in this. You can tell it's carefully done by hand to make a very nice set of puzzles, but it's not overly confusing and a good exercise in memory as well. Also, very nice touch adding in that little quest in the middle, and the soundtrack was lovely. The music in the Bottomless Pit almost reminds me of something The Beatles might do.

Very entertaining game, and it kept me very engaged for quite a while.

Echoes by ghostbomb 2017-05-18T02:58:36Z

I love the hell out of the whole aesthetic going on here as part of the game mechanics. Stuff like this is always a real treat to play, although the only thing I had to kind of take off a few stars for was the fact that it wasn't necessarily themed around 'A Small World' per se, or at least there was not much to indicate that. Bats and lizards and so forth are small critters, but cave systems are not necessarily small.

But the 'Mood' or atmosphere was definitely strong throughout the game, so although it does kinda miss some marks on Theme, I still think it was presented very well.

El Escubo's Key Quest by jellonator00 2017-05-16T01:05:22Z

Really excellent stuff here. Despite the graphics being around 8-bit level, the whole world feels very nicely fleshed out, and I really enjoy the fact that several areas were built with multiple levels in mind and jumping as part of the play mechanics.

It also has a point of completion as well, making it what I would consider a full game, so excellent job getting something out within the deadline that definitely feels like a solid game.

World of Ghost by matsoj15 2017-05-15T23:56:47Z

I went ahead and read the comments here to figure out what was going on, and couldn't help but notice some of the ending text could probably stand to be corrected too. So kind of lower ratings for being a little less than intuitive here, but I do like the idea, and as udo mentioned above, it does definitely feel like Tamagotchi's system of maintaining a pet.

But it's still fairly entertaining nonetheless, and with a little bit more explanation and some minor corrections it would be fairly solid. I'm not sure if there's any 'win' conditions other than just trying to keep the pet alive, but that might be something to consider when working on this game or others in the future.

NT-Virus by fingamer 2017-05-16T20:55:28Z

I actually enjoyed this one a whole lot. For the theme, you really went with something kind of abstract here, but you know what? I totally buy it as being a 'small world' type scenario.

The cutscenes and whatnot are very nice for something made in 72 hours, the controls are pretty nice, and aside from hitboxes being a little big and text displays kind of being out of place on the resolution I ran it on, it was pretty good and I could tell what you were going for.

Spider Royale by superjai 2017-05-16T00:27:48Z

I personally find the 8-button control scheme to be hilarious and awesome, so major points in Humor there. Definitely gives you a sort of feel for what it must be like to be one of our eight-legged friends. :D

... by exezin 2017-05-16T03:01:54Z

I don't know if it's intentional or not, but I ran into the opponent while firing, and perhaps I think during a jump and he managed to disappear and my weapon got unequipped. Also, I managed to teleport up through the bottom of the map as well, I think after hitting my head on the ceiling, but otherwise it looks like a pretty nice start to something good.

My only complaint otherwise would be a lack of any sort of health indicator, if not for enemies then at least for players themselves. Had a few deaths as a result of simply not knowing how many hits I could actually take.

Super Kaiju Dunk City by emarcotte 2017-05-18T03:19:24Z

This would probably be the first entry I've rated perfectly. Turn this into an actual game, because what you have is a great idea and it is marvelously executed.

For a lot of 'Small World' themed games, many of them feature miniaturized cities and whatnot, so I got that feel from the game, especially with the hilarious premise of a Godzilla-like Kaiju playing basketball through the city. Also, the singing of the title on the intro screen is hilarious too, and it is an absolute blast to play.

Bantam! by dylanilvento 2017-05-16T18:54:36Z

I enjoyed the overworld sort of aspect of the game, but the controls and whatnot definitely need more work. I would also suggest maybe going with simpler designs for monsters, as it's really hard to tell what they are supposed to be, exactly. I also don't know if it was the best choice to make them fire in all directions while the player is fairly limited to how they can aim, and the difficulty kind of feels artificial.

Altogether, it looks pretty nice and everything, but refining movement mechanics should always be a top priority before expanding content.

Bullet Wrap by Chao 2017-05-18T02:46:30Z

Crazy stuff here. I would like to see maybe a few more colors in the mix so it's easier to see what's an actual projectile and what's particle effects, but wow, that effect at the end really brings it together in a very interesting way for a game over. Very trippy with all the particle effects in the mix, too.

As others mentioned, a health bar should have probably been included, and the controls kinda stick in weird ways sometimes that required me to do things like letting off of Up in order to go left, but not to go right, and other odd things like that, so perhaps you might want to take a second look at it. But I did like the ability to sort of strafe with the ship, so either releasing keys to change direction or being able to change direction while holding keys is fine, so long as it's consistent overall.

But yeah, really excellent work! Keep at it!

The Robot's Trial by citsua 2017-05-16T02:52:59Z

I think the world in this one looks really nice, but the character design choices were pretty weird, especially the spring and magnet upgrades.

My only main gripe, though, is that the movement feels dangerously unsafe, probably due to a very slight bit of deceleration when the player is trying to stop. It gives the feeling of sort of being 'on ice' the entire time, and with platforms that small there's a lot of precision jumping and keeping the camera tilted down to make sure you don't accidentally fall through half the whole level.

Otherwise, good job, though. 3D stuff is not always simple to do in 72 hours or so.

DEFEND YOUR TINY WORLD! v1.1 by Dragojt 2017-05-16T04:42:21Z

Not too bad. I recently saw another with similar mechanics, and it also kinda suffered from multiple space objects eventually spawning to the point of being undefendable, which ramps up the difficulty real quick. That is avoidable, and you could do other things with the game if you allow players to live longer, but mechanically speaking it's sound for an arcade-style game.

Hives (Gameboy ROM) by refreshgames 2017-05-16T04:34:57Z

Pretty difficult game. It's tough to stay on top of everything that spawns, and three hives is a lot to defend in addition to yourself. But huge props to you for going the Gameboy route. That is certainly not easy, and at least having a high score and those kinds of mechanics makes it feel a lot more like an actual game. I also really enjoy the sound effects, they're definitely spot-on.

Tiny Earth vs The Universe by cameron2134 2017-05-16T01:21:05Z

The controls could probably use a bit of touching up, and it was somewhat disappointing to have a map that was limited to 'edges' of the universe when it feels like a game that could have worked just as well with a fully looping map.

For that many enemies with that much health, the controls definitely should have been tighter, though, as I found more than half of the challenge of the game was kind of getting Earth to go where you wanted it to go. Most of the time, when enemies would land a hit, it often came from offscreen so it also often led to trying to fight a lot of things I couldn't even see, which becomes sort of an issue when multiple targets come into play. Probably better for them to wait to fire until they get within range of you, but the player will still need a bit more mobility to be able to dodge incoming fire that triggers within that range.

Otherwise, though, good stuff here, and I did find it enjoyable.

Sir Shrink-A-Lot by narve 2017-05-16T20:44:01Z

I really like the addition of the shrink / grow mechanic to an obstacle course type game like this. It can be pretty difficult, but still feels fair. The large form only seems really useful for taking out blocks, but it can take a while to switch over to it, and the screen flash for every change is really unnecessary and kind of distracting.

But otherwise, I really like the concept, and it is very fun to play.

Planet Pinball by lucentbeam 2017-05-17T05:55:00Z

I had a pretty difficult time with this game, but still really enjoyed the idea behind it. I noticed the paddles seem to be kind of unevenly spaced, and an instant reset every time a ball hits is kind of brutal. May also need to play with some size adjustments on the ball / paddle until it feels fair, yet still difficult. The rotation speed could also stand to probably be sped up a little, but with less inertia starting and stopping. Might require a fair amount of play-testing, but otherwise you have a rock-solid idea, and I think you should go with it and do more.

I personally loved a lot of the craziness in games like Sonic Spinball, and it would be really interesting to do things like pulling in nearby bumpers when players shoot into black holes, or do light flashes when they hit pulsars, wormholes could take you to alternate areas, and so forth. There is a whole lot you can do with space as your theme, but balancing for difficulty is important and if you do it right it could lead to some very cool things.

Dinonaut: Defender of Celestial Dwarves by zzcalvinzz 2017-05-16T04:27:58Z

Gotta love nice little simple entries like this. Definitely feels like an arcade-style game, and I enjoy any use of quick-restart menus when it comes to games of that style, so thanks for opting for that.

And like Zorg mentioned, if you change your mechanics to be less along the lines of having a 'point of no return' in the difficulty, you can work in other things if you have times, like upgrades and so forth, perhaps to maybe a larger shield or giving the planet itself more health or things to help defend it.

Otherwise, a great start to something, though, and very fun to play.

Caretaker by Lovro Kalinovčić 2017-05-16T01:43:44Z

Could definitely use some music, but that is hard to come by sometimes. Otherwise, a very enjoyable game, and I like a lot of the level design and the concept of bringing each world back to life. In terms of graphics and whatnot, though, looking very nice and reminiscent of older 8-bit games.

Solar Wind by flusap 2017-05-15T23:46:13Z

Really liked the overall feel of this one, and had never considered a game with this sort of structure, so props there. Took me a minute to realize you're supposed to go around bumping into other planets, but I also sort of liked being able to freely explore and figure that out.

I'm a sucker for any game with a fair amount of exploration, and even for a fairly small set of worlds it still felt like there was a lot to check out and the markers around your ship definitely help.

Get Off my Planet! by Magehuntz 2017-05-16T00:07:08Z

Had to look up the instructions and the first time it didn't run so nicely on the recommended settings, but otherwise once I had everything configured and figured out, it was a very enjoyable game to play, and I appreciate the effort to gradually ramp up the difficulty as you go.

Adventure Owl Meets the Mole Men by fenwick 2017-05-16T21:27:12Z

Great little game. The character design made me laugh, as did the premise and the owl's cooperation with its food because of its predicament. Also had a nice sense of progress and had me backtracking a few times to really explore a lot and check things out. Definitely one I'll remember.

SheetAdventure by DMIT 2017-05-16T22:50:24Z

This one has a bit of a steep learning curve to it immediately, and it took me several minutes to kind of figure things out. There's a whole lot of commands here. I would highly recommend cutting down on all the buttons used for controls here if possible, because once the monsters start spawning it kind of gives the feeling of being stranded.

While it's fun and all that you've experimented with stuff like mining and crafting and whatnot, I'm not exactly sure it adds anything to a game which suddenly becomes so frantic. If it were more of a puzzle game, sure, it might work out a lot better, but once it kind of turns into a shoot-em-up style game a lot of that functionality seems to fall by the wayside.

Also, there are some issues with creation and I only seemed to discover more instructions by scrolling down, which was something I didn't realize for a while, and that makes a big difference too. I did really enjoy the concept of the game, though, and it's certainly good practice to try and make several systems like that.

Samhain: Fly Away Home by Vanillycake 2017-05-16T01:31:57Z

Really loving the fact that someone decided to do a 2.5D game with 2D sprites. Very uncommon, and the soundtrack and gameplay was very nice as well. This honestly feels like something that should be worked on more and turned into a full game.

I dunno if it was possible to talk to any NPCs or interact with them other than just being hit, but I felt immediately compelled to explore, which is a very good thing. One thing I did bump into is that the physics made it possible to just skip most of the level and end the game quickly, so you might want to do a bit more with making sure the flutter action doesn't get reset every time you land on something.

But otherwise, very cool game and I hope you bother to continue working on it.

Mad Gods by Norseware team 2017-05-16T02:03:56Z

Man oh man, I love the design of this one. Very simple straightforward games like this are very Flappy Bird-esque, and the idling aspect of the game keeps pretty much anyone playing for at least a little while.

I found it really hilarious to be able to casually spawn people just for the sole purpose of killing them off, and the Earthquake thing I thought was handy at least for the purpose of keeping your population making money for you while wrecking all their stuff.

Great work here, and I'll definitely be playing this one more than once.

Locker C-18 by simonmnt 2017-05-16T21:17:25Z

Fairly straightforward stuff here. I do like the incorporation of custom sound effects, although maybe a little bit hammy and over-the-top, but it works for Humor. I would say in the future to maybe texture blocks and stuff a bit more if possible, as the sprites themselves are nice but the levels can feel kind of bland at times.

Even singular blocks and repeating textures work well in a game like this, and visually I feel like there should probably be a little more detail thrown in for what is essentially a maze game. The storyline's got some pretty funky names included, but otherwise introduces the small world concept pretty well and the objects kind of reinforce it too, so good stuff there.

Tetripolis by kasarun 2017-05-17T02:53:29Z

I like what you've done with the idea of city building as a puzzle game. As a fan of both Sim City and Tetris as well, this one immediately feels comfortable to play and I enjoy the challenge of trying to build a more optimal city each time.

tinyArk by knexer 2017-05-16T20:06:55Z

I'd like to think of this game as something along the lines of the fox-chicken-feed puzzle. It's fairly straightforward to understand, but I think what a lot of people would probably like to see is more instructions about how everything works together.

There's a fair amount of guess work that has to be done in order to make progress, but some games are simply like that, and I won't deduct any points for opting to use those mechanics. But a little more detail would definitely be nice.

Depth Gun by leafo 2017-05-17T00:32:03Z

A fairly challenging game, and it immediately brings Star Fox to mind, which is a very good thing. With maybe some better calibration on the distance of the targeting reticle or perhaps the added ability to lock on somehow, each gameplay experience might last a little longer. But I love the idea of setting it inside of the body, and the visuals look very nice and almost psychedelic in a way, so great job there.

Those rolls through the intestines are pretty sick, too. That was a very cool touch.

Battle Bugs by flyingbear 2017-05-16T00:22:05Z

Pretty entertaining stuff here. The music was very fitting, and sounds like something done by someone with a little more experience with that, so good stuff there. Game controls were pretty solid, and I didn't really have to guess too much at which buttons did what. Didn't quite get as far as being able to upgrade stuff, but still enjoyed it nonetheless. Definitely one I might keep around to play later.

Star keeper by Alexandr AndroidDev 2017-05-16T21:38:49Z

Really loved a lot of this, and yeah, I totally got the Le Petit Prince references going on here too. Two minor things, I think you should definitely build in a quick-restart option on your Game Over screen since you have one in place and there's not a lot of explanation of what's going on, and the other thing I noticed is that the ray may need to be disabled when players are stepping behind the towers or else it kind of gives away the magic of how you're porting the player from one level to another so abruptly.

Don't take these as serious complaints or anything, though. Overall, I really liked just about every aspect of the game.
