That's a nice little game. Reminds me 'Dark Echo' for mobiles. Very consistent art style and gameplay. I'm not sure that this fits the Theme on 100%, but defenetely one of my favorites now. Also, some sort of ambient sound is highly recommended like caves, rocks, water drops, winds, etc. Was so happy to see the rest of the bat family in the end.

Thank you! https://youtu.be/6Le4xvHTQ3A - my playthrough, if you interested.

I liked Echoes very much, I'm not sure if I didn't catch any but it would be nice to have checkpoints. I don't know if the concept is new, but I liked the execution A LOT. It's a polished game and I'm sure you had a lot of fun developing it. Three thumbs up!

I liked the echolocation and bat animation effects. It took me a little to realize that some of the walls/floors were instant death, but once I got that, it was a nice experience.

Nice entry! Echolocation mechanic is cool and it was overall well designed with a nice sense of progression and challenge without getting frustrating.

Great limited palette pixel art, great music and sound effects, echolocation is a great idea. Impressive production quality especially considering it's a Compo entry. The ending reminded me of playing Ecco the Dolphin as a kid. it.

Hey, I really liked the game. It was short and fun. There were some things that were kinda off though: - I think there is no reason not to spam 'X'. I think there should be a downside to using it, maybe cooldown or only a certain amount of charges per level. - the beginning felt a bit empty, I know you wanted to introduce mechanics, but because of the things mentioned above, there wasn't much but flying and spamming 'X'. I think the game got a lot stronger with the puzzles introduced later - also I think all the puzzles would have worked without the darkness thing. I think you reduced your main feature to a gimmick and left quite a bit of potential untapped because of that.

Overall a nice game, the puzzles were fun and the ending was really nice.

Lovely use of minimalism and I really liked the use of echolocation as main gameplay mechanic. I thought you found a good use for it in terms of puzzles in the limited amount of time you had. Just a really solid and enjoyable Ludum Dare entry, great job! :bat:

Such an enjoyable entry. The movement of the bat felt really nice and the echolocation was well done. Liked the progression in difficulty with the puzzles too and just wish there was a bit more ambient music to help set the atmosphere. The art was also great, liked the clean minimalist art style and the simple colours.

Lovely game! It looks great, the puzzles are interesting and I especially like the design of the lizards and how they react to your echolocation. This has been said by someone else but a really think there should be a reason to not spam X, a cool down or something. The controls also felt a bit to floaty at times for precision maneuvering and I never understood how to get around the lazers but that be just be me being stupid ;).

Very good! I liked everything about this game with one small exeption. I expected the bat to slide along the slopes. Being stopped immediately was very unexpected and caused some unecessary deaths by the 'light cannonballs'. I liked the ending but hoped for an additional screen where every bat was leaving the cave behind and flies into the night sky with the player.

I really enjoyed this game. The art was fantastic and the echolocation as really cool. I always like games that teach you how to play without tutorials, just increasingly complex levels. Having an enemy and a collectible look almost the same is a bit confusing, but not too bad. Also the ending was cool, but having it immediately close was a bit abrupt, unless it was a bug.

Interesting concept. The art is also very clean and it's a clever take on the theme. I will say I ended up mashing X a lot which reduced it to more of a normal flying platformer. I'm sure the echolocation code was pretty fun to make though!

This is a great entry! I really like the core mechanics of the game and whole mood of it, I cannot think about anything important to improve, adding more content in the future and probably fixing some performance issues with the echo for a possible release would be the only thing. Good graphics and audio as well, really nice.

My first 5* game :hugging:! Visual presentation is amazing. Level design with the puzzle twist is very clever. I love when the camera starts to move and the cave get opener. And the best part... you are going through a little mysterious story. Congrats, for your great entry!!

Awesome idea, really enjoyed this. I'd have liked to have seen the individual mechanics brought together into larger puzzles to solve, especially in regards to toying with the players desire to use the echo location all the time, and I think there were a few too many empty rooms to traverse, but for two days work this is great!

skosnowich 2017-05-11 20:24

This is a really innovative idea. I like the game very much and the end was somewhat cute. :) I think the game could need a little bit more music and also a better death indicator. But anyway, great job!

stevenjmiller 2017-05-12 21:12

Great game! The flying animation was awesome, and the sound wave shifting when it moved into the water was a nice touch. I personally would've preferred having the player restart from the beginning of a level instead of from a checkpoint, but the mechanics were well done and I liked the ending.

tselmek 2017-05-14 18:54

Great echolocation mechanic with very nice visuals.

earthcollapse 2017-05-14 23:24

This is one of my favorite entries so far! I really enjoyed the mechanics, and the feeling of the controls. I had some trouble figuring out the checkpoints, and the lack of feedback on death was a bit jarring and confusing; same thing for the ending. Aside from that it's really awesome!

superbusyrobot 2017-05-18 02:58

I love the hell out of the whole aesthetic going on here as part of the game mechanics. Stuff like this is always a real treat to play, although the only thing I had to kind of take off a few stars for was the fact that it wasn't necessarily themed around 'A Small World' per se, or at least there was not much to indicate that. Bats and lizards and so forth are small critters, but cave systems are not necessarily small.

But the 'Mood' or atmosphere was definitely strong throughout the game, so although it does kinda miss some marks on Theme, I still think it was presented very well.

Lovely graphics, nice game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRPh1GNGnP0
