LD38 — A Small World

The Mother of All Games by sorceress 2017-05-03T22:48:55Z

This was challenging. I love small challenging games, but for LD reviews there is no so much time to play a lot, I should try next weekend again. Snake controls a bit frustrating, especially on level 3. I hope you'll add a restart button for a certain level, not the whole minigame.

The Mother of All Games - this is true. Also, nice cat :slight_smile:

A Bloody Small World by blinry 2017-05-01T14:45:11Z

That's a lot of art work even for Jam. Awesome. Do you have any plans on additional mechanics for this game?

I was afraid that viruses would kill my blood cells or remove oxygen, but it seems they are just obstacles.

Here is my playthrough: https://youtu.be/fGoSkpRsV5c

liftoff by Remco 2017-05-09T22:05:46Z

So I have a tactic now -- buy only if < 10, sell only if > 15 -- works nice :smile:

Reminds me of old days with Space Rangers game where you can trade too between planets (but it's turn-based, so has nothing common)

SFX sounds and orange screen need some love. Gameplay probably needs some long term progress system (new goods, higher prices, meteorites, floating scrap and etc.)

It was fun to play, thank you.

Contamination by schizoid2k 2017-05-02T13:20:05Z

A petri dish game, nice! You definitely should add a tabletop under the petri dish with some scientific stuff as decoration. And I think we need more gameplay, like new enemies, obstacles and powerups. Good start on the first 3D game.

Here is my playtest if you interested: https://youtu.be/kPnZAusHqUU

The Seesaw Redemption by Headmade 2017-05-09T20:14:03Z

Oh no, what have I done :smile:

homyak.png

I love that hero can't die, but still needs to come back. Works good in this genre.

It was a hard and fun play! This game gives a lot of unique little moments of excitement and release - which I believe a must-have aspect for every game. Well done.

Graphics are a bit non consistent since you have a low res pixel-art (planet, volcanoes), middle-res clouds, hi-res micro habitants and ..oh wow.. a voxel meteor! Try to make it in a one style (voxels, for instance) and it will feel much more complete.

Thank you for the game!

Too Big For This WorLD38 by joemid 2017-05-06T20:15:25Z

I was able to control small dinosaurs, and t-rex, eat stuff, run around. I didn't get what a 'scan' action purpose is but it looks cool.

It seems that you put a lot of effort on visual/cinematics part. Which is good for a game jam. But for real players you should keep in mind a gameplay part as well.

I hope this will end up as some consistent game so I'll keep my eye on this.

The Clearing by masterkrepta 2017-05-05T10:07:04Z

Unity itself follows "Easy to learn, hard to master" principle. It is hard to make a complete 3D game with all the assets and animaitons in 24 hours. But I agree that game developer should aim on the FUN part first. Survival game genre is very competitive and always gives a challenge to make something new, unique and interesting for a gameplay process.

Some issues I found: - Fire effect spins with a character itself - Sometimes monkeys stuck near the hut even if the character is nearby. - Minimap is fliped by 90 or 270, so it is hard to navigate using it.

Maybe some sort of craftable "Scarecrow" (with a timer) would help here or an ability to throw rocks :smiley:

SmallRTS by MaxguN 2017-05-05T15:50:14Z

Oh, I though this one is about Petri Dish also!

Unfortunately, I've got an error couple of times:

``` Uncaught RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded at Entity.FinishAction (entity.js:135) at Faction.TransferEntity (faction.js:99) at Entity.FinishAction (entity.js:158) at Faction.TransferEntity (faction.js:99) at Entity.FinishAction (entity.js:158) at Faction.TransferEntity (faction.js:99) at Entity.FinishAction (entity.js:158) at Faction.TransferEntity (faction.js:99) at Entity.FinishAction (entity.js:158) at Faction.TransferEntity (faction.js:99) at Entity.FinishAction (entity.js:158) ```
Also is there any reason to not maximize/minimize population parameters? I set up Birth Rate and Workload to max, Relation to min and it always works it seams (and game freezes due to the error). I mean are there any cases when 75% value works better than 100%?
Looks promising, anyway. I'll come back and play again if it is possible to fix the error :smile:
The Cookie Knight by aaranos 2017-05-04T09:59:05Z
I'd definitely recommend to read this article: http://higherorderfun.com/blog/2012/05/20/the-guide-to-implementing-2d-platformers/ and comment section as well.
Making a platformer - is a good thing and experience. Making a platformer that everyone will to play - is a huge technical and creative challenge.
Check out this one, for instance: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/super-tiny-adventure-game by @sinclairstrange
The Cookie Knight has nice work on level desing and art consistency. And it is hard enough.
Also try to duplicate all required controls on keyboard. Player's both hands on a keyboard while playing, than he needs to use mouse to press "Back to Menu" and select next level - there is no need in this. R - for restart, Enter/Space - for button press and it will be perfect. You can keep mouse as well anyway.
Flovala by larzan 2017-05-05T14:58:49Z
Reminds me 'Osmos' and 'Spore' of course, but it feels so different because of art and style. I like your palette and that game gives an ability to play as dark guys too.
Do you have any ideas how to expand this gameplay process? (e.g: evolution tree, special abilities, grouping with allies, some ultimate end-game goal?)
Difficulty curve is slightly sloping even for me (I'm not a hardcore gamer), but works well with this type of a control.
Thank you for this game! It was short, familiar, but fun to play.
Space Hummus by dietzribi 2017-05-18T19:57:19Z
It was easy to beat the game with a flying trick, right from a starting planet. But maybe this is a kind of "easy to learn - hard to master" thing.
Sounds are just adorable.
The only issue I noticed that some plannets reset the animation when you jump on them which leads to a visual lag.
Space Hummus by dietzribi 2017-05-20T20:58:09Z
Nice results. Congrats, @dietzribi!
Battle Ham' by BouDeSit 2017-05-16T20:09:14Z
I managed to fail couple of times, but than got three wins in a row. It was fun, but a bit fast to me. I'd prefer a longer rounds and more time to manage army/money. Cute animations and angels :innocent:
Echoes by ghostbomb 2017-05-01T10:55:14Z
That's a nice little game. Reminds me 'Dark Echo' for mobiles. Very consistent art style and gameplay. I'm not sure that this fits the Theme on 100%, but defenetely one of my favorites now. Also, some sort of ambient sound is highly recommended like caves, rocks, water drops, winds, etc. Was so happy to see the rest of the bat family in the end.
Thank you! https://youtu.be/6Le4xvHTQ3A - my playthrough, if you interested.
Hibernaculum by redpanda 2017-05-02T13:59:27Z
I mean.. wow. I want to explore this world more, get inside the castle and move around a bit, and the hut too. I know that was a gameplay limitation but overal style is amazing and it appeals to explore.
Also why don't you double a rotation control on the keyboard too? There is no reason to require a mouse for this type of gameplay, I think. (or make it just optional)
And maybe some snowflakes floating in a snow part since it's a snowglobe.
Here is my playthrough: https://youtu.be/LI67e0k_Bcc (I'm bad at riddles, sorry :smiley:)
Thank you for this game! Love it.
Super Tiny Adventure Game by sinclairstrange 2017-05-01T15:30:26Z
**Cancelled Refuge** was nice, this one is even better. I don't know how it is possible in 72hrs, what is the secret? Do you have your own game engine and tools setup? I'd like to hear about the process. :smile:
I have nothing to add, sorry. :smile: I love this entry.
Defending my small world by t0m 2017-05-13T09:30:27Z
You need to spawn some HP bonuses, some other weapons, maybe? Pretty easy to expand the gameplay. Also try to make characters a bit shorter. And 1-2 seconds of invulnerability when got hit be the enemy, so the player could react on situation and not get consequent multiple hits.
I like the concept, art consistency and it was fun to play, but need more conten. Thank you.
Quantum Frustum by nusan 2017-05-01T16:12:01Z
That's some trippy game. I didn't get the main mechanic for, like, 2 minutes. But then I get it and it was fun to play. Especially with this music/graphics cohesion.
Gameplay is a bit weak for me since all you should do it to make 360° turn, and if way is blocked, turn around again. Some game over condition or time factor would fill this gap, I think.
Definitely my favourite on graphics/innovation.
Here is my 5/5 spheres: https://youtu.be/w2lWoyRvlNU
Thank you!
House Escape by Piotrek 2017-05-06T16:10:08Z
I love escape room games. This one has a nice and consistent art style. And some sort of ambient music would make it more atmospheric.
A couple of concerns: * Some text messages disappear very quickly. * Why do I need to take a knife two times? * What are the other items (they do not have names or description) * Cat pic looks like a message bubble since it has a small arrow for some reason.
Do have a backstory for this game?
Thank you for the yesterday twitch stream and live feedback.
Here is my playthrough: https://youtu.be/ig3jyt4crHI if you interested.
The world is (a) flat by Jordgubben 2017-05-09T13:19:30Z
My assumption was that it's possible to give a panda some bamboo that I harvested in the kitchen but then I built a raft :smile:
I like the projection of a world map on a game world. Probably it's better to highligh the current room on the minimap as well.
Tribal Tension (Twitch) by SaraJS 2017-05-10T22:46:19Z
I love the game, its spirit, appearance and pvp aspect, chat tricks (e.g. type "!aftack" instead of "!attack"). But I don't like the fact that it's on the main page everyday. It's just not fair for the rest of 2982 entries. Hope @pov can do something about this.
The game itself is very well implemented. Had like ~20 full plays and not tired yet :smiley:
Haven - The Small World by Iluvatar 2017-05-09T13:54:57Z
Since I restarted game four times (first time - a pressed Alt+tab and resolution got broken; second, third time -- I thought the game is glitched, since I clicked on sofa and then on Igor and there was no "Here is your locket" dialog option; fourth time -- to make a final playthrough) my main issue for now is unskippable into which takes almost full 2 minutes! I tried space, x, esc, enter and etc.
Second issue -- inventory.
Art style, texts and atmosphere is awesome. Nice job. Hope we will see a full game.
Pixel Town by automatonvx 2017-05-09T12:25:23Z
Reminds me of Pharaon/Ceasar games. Requires a bit UI/UX polishing and more levels/structures, but overal it plays very good.
Scenario 2 map has a tricky enemies spawn on the left side, that was a bit unexpected.
Here is my playthrough: https://youtu.be/oeXQOvdnl8I
Thank you for the game!
Smalltrek by impbox 2017-05-21T09:28:18Z
Congratulations, @impbox! I love every part of this game.
I tried to complete it, but got a glitch on level 21. I did a record of it:
World en abyme by lepatryckduffy 2017-05-04T10:20:59Z
We need more levels! Ball collider a bit strange, I was expecting it's to be more solid and more predictable. Since it's a physics sandbox, you could also add more physical non-static obstacles: logs, barrels, boxes and etc.
Here is my playthrough: https://youtu.be/yereD-4tYbM
It was fun to play. Thank you!
Bullet Wrap by Chao 2017-05-07T10:38:18Z
At first I thought this is just another vertical scroller, but then something has changed -- I saw my own bullets and then the spaceship itself, and more spaceships afterwards, and then I get it. Amazing feeling.
I think you missed something in your description: `in which the world gets ___?___ when you get hit.` -- that's why people are not expecting this special thing about the gameplay.
Also, that's a nice parallax effect with starts.
Jelly Germ by Ethereal Psyche Games 2017-05-04T21:03:06Z
Can't open the last door and contols are unpredicted sometimes (especially sticky one). Enemies do not harm, it seems. I was thinking about "Tag: The Power of Paint" game, but for sure this one is different.
Nice menu opening, consistent art and music.
I did a playthrough: https://youtu.be/vgg5i8zx30w and found couple of bugs (auto-climbing / secret wall at last level). It was fun to play, but game requires some polishing. Thank you.
Отличные результаты, ребята! Очень рад за вас :smiley:
GardenGarden by MatLab 2017-05-03T22:07:03Z
This reminds me multiple good games at the same time - The Neverhood (hero, style, sculpting), Astroneer (plants, seeds, palette) and 2048 (grow mechanics). I think this world needs some sort of hut, rocks or maybe an oasis nearby. I'm not sure how the red grass affects my plants, slows down them or requires more water? Also is there any dependency with a surface color? And by the way, how did you implement the seamless view/navigation?
It was a pleasure to play, thank you so much for this game :green_heart:
My longest playthrough so far: https://youtu.be/pbEMukLb4x8 Almost 25 mins!
Spike Spire by Acuity 2017-05-16T19:38:30Z
I can get to the second floor, but that jump is very tricky. Screen wrap looks good actually, but you should add more original mechanics to make the gameplay more unique and innovative. Platformer genre is very competitive (VVVVVV, Super Meat Boy, Dustforce and etc.) and it's also very fun :smiley:
I'd recommend to read this as well: http://higherorderfun.com/blog/2012/05/20/the-guide-to-implementing-2d-platformers/
Thank you.
Live or DIE! by jondalnas 2017-05-20T11:19:40Z
You should add some images to the game description, since it's completely unexpected what you will see.
And wolves ate all my animals.
Joblist hides a part of a map too.
Live or DIE!.png
But it was fun to play. Thank you.
Dr. M Little's Planet Mass Overdrive by slimabob 2017-05-01T10:05:30Z
Wasn't able to win the first time, probably I should have stay near the green zone of my temperature. Physics is nice, even some planets have an orbit. Space Odyssey music probably would fit better or something like Flight of the Valkyries (try to play it on the backgroung, it is just epic with this game).
It was fun overal. Thank you!
https://youtu.be/jsyZh33JuXk - my playthrough, if you interested.
Infecteria by LiquidBrain 2017-05-01T13:39:06Z
This game feels nice. Time factor works in some way, but I think you need something different for end-game condition than just time. I like the bacteria factories idea, but I don't see it's possible to perform a some sort of chain reaction if I super fast at the beggining, no matter how fast and how much cells I infect - the amount of bacterias produced is constant it seems.
infection.png
Anyway it is fun and nicely drawn (reminds Osmos a bit).
Here is my playtest: https://youtu.be/oxc1Xt6fNCk
Thank you!
rocket ship by Zirrrus 2017-05-01T12:02:13Z
Haha, my first score was about -40K - that's right, a negative value :smiley:. Controls feedback is not that perfect, probably some additional maneuverability would help, something like [RCS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_control_system).
Art style is nice, especially the menu with the rocket. And planet should spin, I think.
Thank you!
Here is my playthrough - https://youtu.be/h-mTtzyDdmE, if you interested.
It's a Small World by aviv871 2017-05-09T19:10:21Z
I cheated and asked a teammate to help me with 2x2 worlds :) we just shared QA/WS.
It's a good story, but I don't have any ideas how to expand this game. Do you have some?
Overall it was fun, thank you.
SMALL INFECTION: a hardcore cellular shoot-em-up! by Jakobe3 2017-05-15T20:35:03Z
That was quite hard. The main feature works and really helps to dodge, but camera is to close, hard to navigate. Add some bullets impact animation and hit sounds -- this will improve the game-player interaction.
Moon Eat Moon by brandann 2017-05-04T22:56:48Z
Hah, nice text messages! I've got a freeze couple of times and NullReferenceException in the output.log
Was thinking about the "Osmos" game of course, but the overal dynamic of this game is different. It was fun to play, thank you.
Water Bear World by Aviland 2017-05-05T16:55:28Z
A/D - controls are the best. You don't need to W/S with them at all :smile: It's an atmospheric game. Best regards to your Dad -- music really fits the style and gameplay.
One thing could make a gameplay more interesting to me - ability to speed up a bit. May be with some sort of stamina bar or special food. Even with this kind of a control, a player needs a way to escape a bad situation (from ice or enemy) somehow, by spending some expensive game resource (stamina, food, etc. - does not matter).
Also, I was not able to unlock two level, is it possible to do at all?
Planet Defense by kalabasa 2017-05-05T16:13:09Z
Art looks very consistent, nice!
I think, an ability to slowly spin the planet with arrow keys will add more gameplay here. And upgrades for turrets, maybe. @kalabasa, what ideas for a more complex gameplay process do you have?
The Life Amoebic by Baby Dino Herd 2017-05-13T22:52:04Z
It requires some getting used to, but feels nice overal. Have you tried to implement moving mechanics? Like if you need to move between rocks, sticks, etc.
Bug Attack! by Gurbx 2017-05-06T21:43:20Z
Wave 15 got me. Well done and consistent implementation. It looks good and it plays good.
Some random bonuses spawned on a map that enforce player to move units will be a nice addition to the gameplay. Also, it could be some special player abilities with a cooldown/mana cost, e.g. meteor, extra resourses, units drop and etc.
Thank you.
The Bugs World by gagapete 2017-05-15T20:55:54Z
Can't figure out how to win, assuming me and the enemy have the same resources. It's just a matter of time. I think you should add some sort of tactical possibility to win a battle with a smaller group of bugs. Or let them grow/evolve (different type of food, for instance) so player will have multiple options how to play the game.
Camera move on 'RMB hold' always triggers bugs to move since it's also RMB.
Art style is very consistent, AI and moving logic looks interesting. Thank you! :smiley:
Lead the Ants by matita 2017-05-07T11:32:37Z
I agree on some additions to a gameplay -- obstacles, water, rocks, dynamic hazards, multiple food locations, time speed up and level restart button.
Nice work on the AI. It was fun to play and to figure out how it works.
CryoDream .2 by KeenMustDie 2017-05-05T16:04:21Z
I wish I could control the music rhythm somehow (like you said - a procedural music, but with some variables from user input). And Shaders is always +.
Also, I've checked Missile.KMD :smile: It's a game!
Dispyria by Tat2Tim 2017-05-07T12:10:33Z
Hey, that's nice entry.
Things I like: - Game atmosphere - Art consistency, animations and color palette (even a blue character :smile:) - Music - Free-to-go-yet-limited level design
Things I doubt: - Casual platformer gameplay (it can be expanded easily, I beleive). A grappling hook, anyone? - No way you can get back upstairs if you fall down in a first dungeon - Ctrl+Space combination closes current tab in Opera browser (and game too) - The final boss is just a static statue - Relation with a "Small world"
Here is my playthrough: https://youtu.be/8mTnRd5VEqI It was fun to play, thank you!
Murder Mitosis by _for_science 2017-05-02T14:31:35Z
Pretty solid gameplay. I think this could be a popular websocket .io game with a bigger world and more players (like agario, diepio, paperio and etc.)
Could you also please describe the implementation part? That squishy faces physics especially.
Here is my playtest: https://youtu.be/K3bMrIsmMWk Thank you! It was fun to play.
Planet or Die! by Silas Reinagel 2017-05-16T21:19:04Z
Texts are very well written and I like all the space splash screens.
And this one was a bit unexpected :smile: wait what.png
Planet Bash by killerkun 2017-05-04T08:53:18Z
Rock music, brutal style and challenging gameplay? I like it. Game over was a bit unexpected due to lack of "death animation" and non-consistent healthbar. But the game feels great anyway.
Hammura-Hamburger - nice track.
Here is my playtest: https://youtu.be/8W8cXQXEAVw Thank you!
Colorfly by Zelos 2017-05-20T13:41:37Z
Nice meditative gameplay and beautiful music. I managed somehow to miss two spheres.
Are trees procedural? If yes -- I'd recommend to make more natural "grow" animation for them and make their appearance more random. Like in Eufloria game, for instance.
Here is my playthrough:
I'm not sure was it a real game end or I just failed it :smile:
Leucos by Harry Alissavakis 2017-05-05T08:49:36Z
Did you consider an alternative way how to use powerups - like you can collect them first, and then activate with hotkeys. Because now I'm forced to collect them and waste on low waves, or keep them and in case of immergency rapidly jump accross the platforms while 4-5 enemies killing my heart :smile:
Also I did not notice the bottom platforms at the beginning due to cam angle. But I don't think that you should change it, just maybe a quick zoom out / zoom in between the waves to give an overall view on all the platforms.
Game feels consistent in term of art, style, humor and gameplay.
Maybe it is better to make forthcoming cards more darker, but I'm not sure:
Strangeness by philomory 2017-05-09T13:07:36Z
A ruby game, that's impressive! I like that levels have some extra keys/enemies just to distract player's attention and the most of levels not that hard as you can assume at first.
I'm not an artist so I can't give a proper feedback on a visual part, the only thing I can emphasize is that walls should be more contrast to represent a blocking object and more depth value; while grass must be a bit brighter since it's just a floor. And floors better to use pastel colors.
Keeplanet by HellSquirrel 2017-05-13T10:16:18Z
That's a very nice entry!
Moments I liked a lot: - Consistent low poly style, assets, color scheme, lighting work. - Game atmosphere and ambient music - Main gameplay concept seems pretty unique - Local gameplay progress -- when a planet gets bigger - The main menu idea, game saves.
Moments I doubt: - Camera control, it's quite hard, and I can't zoom out to see the Sun. - It is possible to block the game if you put a lot of trees and then you have two mountains in a row and there is no surface to place them. An ability to remove objects in this case could help (not everytime, but only when the game detects that there is no free space). - The planet weight distribution is not that obvious, may be in case of planet stop the game should highlight with a red glow the overloaded part of the planet? Or show the problem somehow at least. - Is there any global gameplay progress? Between two planets for instance.
Asteroid Hopper by yyam 2017-05-05T09:11:06Z
It's good you have some additional mechanics (telepots, breakable rocks) to this common puzzle basis. Level design is perfect to me with this kind of difficulty curve. And even tutorial levels, nice!
Music fits the mood and style. It was fun to play. Thank you!
[The Mother of All Games](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/the-mother-of-all-games) by @sorceress has the similar puzzle but with a bit harder levels.
Crater Creator by navot 2017-05-06T22:39:32Z
Moments I like: - Tutorial (exceptionally good tutorial flow) - Consistent art style and palette, planet growth visualisation - No fuel limits (the most orbital-rocket games have this cliche) - Ability to skip texts - Texts :smile: - Main gameplay mechanic
Moments I doubt: - Planet requirements in the left bottom corner in absolute values (not ranges, not color scales). - There is no "game end" - player should end it by himself while he can't reduce the amount of water/atmo/weight. - Asteroids in the tutorial could fly out of the screen resulting a deadlock. - There is no global gameplay progress between missions (coud you please share the ideas if you have some?) May be something like two planets to maintain at the same time, managing all available asteroids between them. Or any kind of new mechanics?
Of course these are minor things for LD game. It was fun to play and I even have a video: https://youtu.be/5KUUBBzRNWM so, thank you!
Still Waters by mihaylovartem74 2017-05-12T21:11:52Z
Thank you, Handsoap Mains! 3 people left.
- Controls are bit hard (since it's almost no space on board) - Nice day/night cycle and the way music changes - Ships with a pop music were fun, but ruined atmosphere a bit - Good resource management system overall, I see how it can be easily expanded.
Nice and interesting story. I was able to stuck on one of the platforms somehow, but the rest works fine. The 'memories' yellow eye looks like an active element on a platform (not the background), but only for the first time, then I noticed the whole 'monster'.
Slightly Angry Max by Takusan 2017-05-16T20:51:45Z
Awesome and fun entry.
Moments I liked a lot: - Game setting, level design (despite art is not yours, everything in its place) - Game introduction and "How to" page. - Game-to-player feedback (death animation, bullet hits, etc) - Fun and classic gameplay
Moments I doubt: - Some sprites overlapping is incorrect (enemy head under wooden fence, for instance) - Passive AI and exploit caused but it. - There is no gameplay progression (like in Alien Shooter survival mode where you get new weapons from bosses and enemies become stronger) - Barrels are not explosive (how dare you!)
Sentient Duality by CabbageCrow 2017-05-20T14:46:10Z
Some ideas: - Show the other shapes almost transparent, at least at first stages. - Allow player to make a mistake couple of times ('hearts' or something like that) - Some moving obstacles, some checkpoints will add more progression to a game. - Re-think interaction with egdes. It is possible to win the game by holding both 'up' and 'right' now, like this:
I like these simple shapes (like diep.io) and color solution :upside_down:
Glade in the Sky by AdroitConceptions 2017-05-07T21:29:35Z
Nice platformer puzzle.
Moments I like: - Low poly style and models - Open a lock to get another lock trick -- it works well here - Level design where player always can see his goal, but it is unreachable. Multiple paths.
Moments I doubt: - Exploit is still reproducable (see: https://static.jam.vg/raw/2e1/z/4106.gif) - Character is able to jump over the boxes too, just spam 'jump' while being pushed by a box. - Skybox is not perfect, although it is better than a comlete darkness.
It's bit hard to navigate in a complete darkness. Some static Galaxy Skybox will make this look better, I think. Or may be a global star map? And ability to create starts, and deploy planets on the orbits.
Also, could you please describe technologies used? Server side, protocol, etc. Looks interesting.
Amoebros by Spinaljack 2017-05-06T21:19:32Z
Ha-ha, nice end-game screen! I love genetic algorithms, food -> speed -> life -> agro -> hp -- my win sequence.
I think the game should show a location where glass got broken at the end, because it was a bit unexpected and I just won.
For a better tutorial some tooltips near each stat/slider would be very helpful. Also I'd like to see my best species by life time and DNA collected (e.g TOP-3 with names and stats). You could add some glowing to food blobs, because they are hardly noticeable with the current color scheme, especially on max zoom out.
By the way, is there any way to lose here?
Thank you! It was fun to play and invader is a good Easter Egg.
Space Snake by Hunter Loftis 2017-05-05T16:33:32Z
Snake in space -- this is just brilliant. I was thinking about Osmos, Spore, but this has quite different mechanics. Planet guards, HP bar, snake growth, controls, color palette - excellent. Planets movement a bit hard to predict, but I really love it.
3271 score. It was fun to play, thank you.
Tiny Buckler by feltip 2017-05-09T20:27:18Z
Shield controls is very interesting, requires some skill actually. Maybe to smooth this a bit some sort of "reset shield" ability with a cooldown would help. Or not just a reset but enforce to fly directly to a character.
Level 15 got me, but it was fun.
I love the way you can push these little soldiers to help them move faster and see how they flip. Visual style is quite interesting too. I had some troubles with the controls since you can't do both W+D to make a forward+up movement, but it could be a feature. And I'd recommend to put another helipad (or fuel bonus) after the second turret to reward a player and create some sort of a checkpoint.
Powering Down by jwin 2017-08-13T18:05:58Z
Game is very short, but it plays really good. Another key binds idea - `Z, X, C, ...` - to select a sub-system, `1, 2, 3, ...` - to set a specific mode for this sub-system. Like pressing `Z` will open thrusters configuration, and `1, 2, 3` - high, low, off. You could keep `SPACE` dialog in this case too.
Also I'd recommend to limit bullets range, so player won't be able to shoot targets out of the screen (unless this is a feature in some cases).
Energy Scraps by Royoyo 2017-08-10T10:17:25Z
Spent ~30 mins to complete.
This game triggers curiosity and exploration in a good way.
Some issues I found: - Max HP value does not increase above 100 (so if you have maxhp upgrades it will be 160/100) - Grind part where you stare at a battery is not very fun. I think this could be solved by grabbing a battery into my backpack and then it will transmit energy slowly (so I can move and do pew pew). It should be not allowed to take another battery until the first one is fully depleted. - Enemies keep shooting while death animation. - Jumping on edges/cliffs is not very predictable.
I'm really bad at racing games and walls with obstacles make it really hard to play.
I had like 5 tries (~20 mins total) and still failed (night time, room with lights). I'd recommend to add some checkpoints, instead of tweaking the boat speed. There is no problem to move slowly, observe nice leveldesign, enjoy the atmosphere and solve puzzles, the problem is that in case of fail you have to perform all actions again from the very beginning (when player knows the solution) and the boat speed is a real obstacle in this case.
Looking forward to see some updates. :smiley:
Minor thing: add an option for qwerty keyboards, since 'q' and 'e' are not close as 'u' and 'i'.
Couple of recommendations for the next LDs:
- Make a screenshot, attach it to the game description (people love screenshots). Even better - add it as a cover image (in a game page settings) - If game is not finished -- describe your original idea, gameplay, mechanics, just add some words :smiley: - Make an executable of your game (the first link I found: http://pygame.org/project-pyg.exe-2830-.html), since the python installation -- is an additional step to play your game. - Play, rate and comment other games, if you have some time -- this will rank your game higher in LD search and recommendations. Also, some games are really fun.
Hope this helps. See you next LD ;)
@machocodes, Your Daku game is good-looking too. Thanks!
@emil-sunesson, Thanks, man! Actually these are 'Arcade' physics, which is a bit painful and requires a lot of tweaking.
@bodom4ever, Glad you liked it :smile: We assumed some players will try to save all the creatures, originally this was not intended as a game goal, but it's doable. The game does not reward for this though. Didn't have time for sounds, planning for post-LD.
@jordy-adan, Well... we have hats too, haha. This is our first LD platformer ever and character control is more difficult to make/polish than we thought.
@beebo-studios, Thank you! You would be surprised but we have music for the comic part, the only thing -- it wasn't pushed into repository. We found this right after the submission hour. Here is the track - https://www.audiotool.com/track/xeno-menu/
@hippunk, @sidewalksleeper, @camcam-s5, Believe you or not -- We've never heard about Pikmin before you mention it. GameCube was not that popular in our country. But as I can see from trailers -- this game is just brilliant, no wonder since it's made by Nintendo. And they added multiple types of creatures which brings a lot of gameplay variativity. I definitely should try it.
@al19890604, You should eat more pizza to beat the game on time, if you know what i mean =) Lags are bad, probably it's due to pathfinding (A* on a graph). What type of CPU do you have? Thank you for the feedback.
CARnage by Rolle 2017-12-17T01:30:38Z
Things I liked: - Art Style, skulls are nicely done, blood stamps on the car ++ - Difficulty level seems fine (but it could be lower for LD) - Carmageddon, GTA2, Mad Max Hype! - Really fun to play
Other things: - Some sounds are bit spiky to my ears (don't know why) - Enemy car are not that bumpy as player's one. They follow their route and really hard to ram them. - My first try was awfull -- I didn't recognize 'checkpoints rule' and power-up that removes blood (it looks like a resistor to me) - I'd recommend to add small unobtrusive arrows to show direction to the next checkpoint and opponents, on edge of the screen.
Things I liked a lot: - art, palette, animations, easter eggs, hatching shadows. - game menu, ui and overall polish level - MUSIC. It just plays in my head.
Other things: - My first assumptios was that I need to hit punches accordingly with a music tempo. - I didn't get what to do in my very first try and failed 4 times in a row. But then I recognized HP bars on top. I'm not very smart. - Combos need more love. ~~Best tactic for now...~~ oh I see a lot of people mentioned it. - Timer flikers a lot since it contains millisecond and aligned in center and font is not monospaced.
I'd recommend to adjust the battle system (make combos more valuable, nerf saxy), add some levels and this will be a great full-featured game. Why not? :smiley:
I should say... this is the hardest chicken parkour simulator I've ever played. The first impression and art style are well done, but I really bad at this game. Difficulty curve must be improved, in my opinion.
Wizard Castle Defense by AryelSander 2017-12-11T19:43:09Z
Hi there.
It would be easier to just activate/deactivate spells with 'qwe' and then apply them with LMB, without any need to use 'space'. E.g., player sees fire+water enemy -- presses 'q' -> presses 'w' -> attacks with LMB -> enemy destroyed. Water+water -- presses 'w' -> attacks once -> presses 'w' again -> attacks -> enemy destroyed.
Color scheme and texures are nice.
Bunny Things by shaulor 2017-12-12T22:26:01Z
Things got bad really fast :rabbit: Need some type of "Clear all" ability with a large cooldown/cost.
Another idea -- ability to sell bunnies by setting special goals like make N money in M time so player will have to decide how much bunnies to keep, to breed, to sell. In this case carrots and special abilities could have money cost as well.
I love the art style and green bunny especially.
The Will of the Wisps by adsilcott 2017-12-25T23:54:37Z
Played the both post-jam and original versions. This one and Jazzy Beats (cc. @moski) are the best in JAM 'Audio' for me, like six stars. I have a video playthrough as well if you need another one -- `https://youtu.be/0MdaPAncE3o`
Don't want to duplicate all the previous commenters and mention atmosphere, raycasting, art, animation and the plot twist (or did I just... oh).
Post Jam version has a larger level layout and I think if you expand it even more -- it could be hard to navigate and remember all 'closed doors'.
I didn't get if it's dangerous to touch all the spooky things around: flyings shadows, deadly-locking rocks, trees, etc. Was trying to avoid just in case.
Great game. :ghost:
Vroom Vroom Kaboom by profan 2017-12-23T14:48:03Z
Just an idea -- this could be a good game for programming/algorithms introduction. Especially if you expand it with something like 'loops', 'conditions' and 'traffic lights'. [Google had one recently](https://www.google.com/doodles/celebrating-50-years-of-kids-coding), but it's more 'visual'.
I'd prefer 'L', 'R', 'F' keys as well, so no need to hold shift.
I've got some performance issues, it seems controls got stuck a bit when there are a lot of lava on the level.
I'd recommend to set not only 'Source code', but 'HTML5 (web)' links as well. Otherwise this entry could be filtered out by some game lists (e.g. feedback friends, 'web only', etc.) Didn't notice any audio, so I leave this section unrated.
Also, character moves faster if you hold the key due to 'key typed' event, while I think it should have a configurable speed (in your source code) and work with 'key pressed'/'released' only.
I like this room :smile:
Trashsucker by Hugimugi7 2017-12-11T23:28:01Z
I hope now I'll be better in trashsucking at home. Surprisingly the main mechanic feels really good.
At first I thought you can blow trash at enemies as well to kill them. The second assumption was that enemies produce trash (by throwing it or after their death).
And the second level seems quite big in comparison to the first one.
Skulls n' Ladders by arly 2017-12-23T19:33:19Z
This hero is so charizmatic! Love it.
I feel like this game needs a bit more balance since it's easy to kill sculls when you have a lot of coins, I'd expect some moments when player has to throw all coins away to be more stealthy and progress further. Rare immortal skulls, maybe? Speed reduction could work too, but it's less fun.
Level generation, art style, coin sounds ++.
Slime's Guardian by Pepaco 2017-12-08T13:15:12Z
I like the idea of shadows which are danger to the character as well and you have to 'reload' them. I think the controls might be more responsive if remove "stop on shoot" and add an ability to speed-up / dash (e.g on 'shift') with some small mana-cost.
MEGA by Yetman 2017-12-07T22:37:11Z
I wonder.. was it AEOS easier to make than this one?
I should not mention obvious things (in your TODOs) and I love the art style and reference. I'd recommend to think how to utilize the main mechanic even more, e.g. player has to move some boxes over platforms to complete the level and this will also be affected by the carrying capacity; or it should transfer some resources (burgers? gold?) across the level from point A to B, so player will need to decide whether take more ammo and less resources but it will require additional run OR take less ammo and all the resources but this will be more challenging but less time-consuming.
@ryan-lambe, according to the rules it's allowed to improve gameplay blockers in post LD versions, but only if the main gameplay and content remains untouched. You can try to make your game more accessible so the rest of us can play and rate it.
I'd recommed to add some visual effects when hp is low (<10%) to make a visual feedback to a player so the death won't be unexpected; and some medkits would be nice too.
The Next Floor by Activdesign 2017-12-13T00:13:03Z
Got -12/20. Really interesting and new game experience for me, I will try to get 20/20.
Timer is rounded to 0.5 secs which is a huge limitation for a time-based game. It should be rounded to 0.01 seconds and have a visual progress bar as well, I think.
Also I've got some issues when clicked multiple times on the game screen (it seems UI menu is not disabled when game is started).
Molly's Space Nursery by Beebo Studios 2017-12-17T01:55:11Z
@beebo-studios, do you have any ideas/vision how to expand the core gameplay? I find it quite simple and it fits the theme perfectly. But I feel like it lacks some variativity. My first assumption was that I need to use all the toys laying aroud on the level. Like matching them with the characters (sabers for 'wookie', pot for 'plant', rabbit for 'cube-head' and etc.) and moving around. Or it could be a different type of 'needs' where each type has its own icon and key assigned (e.g.: Q - pet, W - feed, E - water).
Another question, how many levels are there?
Matchy's Kooky Cookies by Michael Silverman 2017-12-23T20:40:24Z
Quite exploitable tactic is just to spam clicks 15 pixels bellow the star -- enemies won't be able to get there due to repel force. I think this could be solved by adding more tough and heavy enemies (rare one). Or you can always place the second (or third) location for cookies. So there will be two 'bases' to defend.
I like the large swarms of enemies at round 3 -- fighting with them is pretty rewarding and satisfying.
Awesome game. I like how the level selection screen is designed and overall feeling about the gameplay. AI is kinda cheating, but this is fine, since the game would be easier otherwise.
Coulpe of issues I found: - exit button doesn't work - AI could build fort in the air in some cases (no ice under the fort) - It is possible to jump over small gaps (I'd consider this as a feature, but for sure it's not intentional)
CRUMBLE by whycardboard 2018-08-15T03:19:24Z
Level generation and music are great. I wonder how the gameplay could have changed by making it realtime. But since it's a turn-based and puzzle-like -- I see no problem to show the gems location when it's available to collect. In this case player will be able to decide whether move directly for the gem or get more score/coins by collecting non-gem tiles with a risk to run out of space.
And I noted sometimes the hero slides really fast (you can see it on the video). It was fun to play, thank you!
Collapsing Reality by SamuelDeboni 2018-08-16T03:00:09Z
Beautiful and minimalistic art, love it. Is there any advantage to have more than 1/3/5 Stabilizers? Overall this game is interesting to play. More strategic options would make the gameplay more deep. Like if I had two types of buildings to place -- the first helps to collect energy faster, the second -- more strong in a defense. Also have you considered adding zoom-on-scroll option?
It's a bit hard to aim accurately. And the crop field is excessively large, as a player I expected that I need to sow it completely in the end-game. Fortunatrely, the first two rows were more than enough. :smiley:
Or you could make the pace faster by reducing the energy consumption and allowing to do all the actions by holding the key. In this case this kind of large field could be justified.
And I really need to save up for a door...
Twist of Souls by franfox 2018-12-19T03:07:11Z
@franfox, I don't think you should reduce the difficulty, players tend to love challenging platformers (e.g. SMB, Celeste, VVVVVV and many more). It's fairly difficult and it's all about right timings and controls. Unless you track metrics for the game sessions and see something that works not as intended.
The game is not frustrating :smiley: The only thing I have concerns on — is the 'upside down / normal' playtime ratio. It seems 'upside down' close to 90% right now. If you plan to add more content — I'd consider to make it somewhere in range 50%-70%, especially in the first levels so player can get used to the 'upside down' mode.
King of the Goo by BenPeterson 2019-10-14T19:18:38Z
Awesome art!
I wish I can see all unlocked 'schemes' somewhere on the UI. And I think you could show an accurate DNA scheme of the enemy so I could recreate it if I want. In case if you don't want to show every scheme and make it that easy -- just break some of the DNA parts.
So let's say I killed the enemy and it has the following weapon scheme:
`[GYYO-]`
you could 'break' 1-2 parts before showing it to the player as:
`[G-Y--]` or `[--YO-]`
By breaking some parts you obfuscate the recipe and do not expose it right away. This means I need to kill 1-3 more enemies with this weapon to get the rest of the colors in the scheme and recreate it. Also, in this case you could make all the schemes random at the start of each game. Roguelike!
This is just an idea! :smile: Brute-forcing all possible combinations just feels less enjoyable to me. And this is my attempt:
Picking the right scope for a game jam is always a challenge. You can spend all the time on polishing art or some challenging mechanic that you've never tried before. Can relate to that! :smile: And I think you know all that since you participated at least 9 LD jams (that's impressive!).
See you next LD. Cheers!
Love the character and car design. Trash attachments system works great too!
Things to improve (imho): - better car controls & physics - car collisions - minimap (why not?) - fix diagonal speed to a normalized value - ideas for gameplay features: other scavengers/monsters (for pve) | time factor | physics puzzles | car upgrades | loot scanner | some other resource management | etc.
Things to improve (imho): - Hit registration, some visual feedback, hp bars for enemies - Some short description on what each defense structure does. - A bit longer pause between waves, at least when player leans the mechanics and controls. - HP bar for your base. - More enemies! - More graceful collisions for player movement. Maybe just slowing down instead of hard blocking.
There is a very promising intrigue with all the screenshots and back story. But I was not able to fully experience it due to sens issues and general pew-pew mechanics and my skills :smile:. I hope you did some playtests first since there are 11 people in this amazing team and I do not believe I am that bad (or may be I am >_<).
I feel like reducing enemies damage output from 5 to 1 would help a lot, since you promote a unique plot more than fps game (or may be both?). Yet another option is to make enemies' projectiles larger and brighter and a bit slower to be able to dodge them.
Love the aesthetics! I agree the game a short and some progression would be nice too see.
Covering your quality/quantity question I do feel you could spend less time on the level this size and npc models that player sees only for about 20 seconds (and the boss model is just covered by a dialog whole time). You could invest more in core gameplay and game feel, like adding more variety to the battle system, enemies and polishing camera, user controls -- features that players sees the most, which makes them important.
I had fun reading the notes though :smile:
I think if you introduce all the mechanics gradually over multiple tutorial levels with a in-game usage examples this could clarify all those moments. I see myself playing this game for 5-10 levels easily!
Impressive entry for a COMPO! Failed miserably on my very first try. Got a victory on the next one.
Was not happy I am unable to see all the juicy fight behind the tower. Also felt a bit annoying the whole toggle screen mechanic and wasd movement but once I understood how units work and wave timer is intentionally not visible -- it got much better. Player needs to find a balance between getting greedy and not preparing enough - I love that.
God Awakener by WegPast 2024-10-10T06:00:50Z
I think the game would benefit from having some direct instructions, e.g. bring 5 rock guys here, keep 3 tree elementals here for 15 seconds and etc. Like mini quests or timed events. Otherwise I feel like I see no progression despite things happening on the screen - numbers are changing, units are moving, elementals are spawning. I just have a hard time understanding how I am affecting it.
In general, I like the idea of waking up an ancient god from a deprivation with all the rituals and preparations. Or the idea of starting a complex engine and mechanism following some cryptic and obscure instructions. So I see what you are trying to achieve here. May be I should play version 1.3. I downloaded 1.1 but it had index.html which I can not run on windows.
On my second try after I read all the instructions I was trying to keep rock elementals in tree spawning zone and tree elementals in water spawning zone but it did not help too.
All four main screens of the art are really impressive. Glad you show them here, because they are stretched in the game and lose the quality;
I played both zip and web versions and support all the fixes you've made. The battle system is lacking some visual feedback but I got used to it and was able to make my progress over the levels. Once I reached what I believe is the final stage and cleared the bullets passage the game crashed (see the video);
I feel it should not be that dark because it hides all the beauty and may be the camera should be zoom out more so players can see and appreciate the artwork. It is a nice exploration game with a great mood and lore behind it. All it needs is polish and some juice;
A Java game, wow! What engine is that?
I played the game. Died instantly few times, but managed to play 18 minutes after that. It seems the main trick is to keep damaging myself so the repair cells always follow me and not get destroyed somewhere off screen. All the bacterias merge into one spot and hard to understand how many of them there, I wish they spread out a little. Overall a great entry has some Osmos vibe, but a different game entirely. Super fun game. So many levels too! I played total ~30 minutes. The very first level is really hard comparing to levels 2, 3, 4. If you gonna expand this idea I recommend adding time speed up button (annoying when 2 laser bois fight across the map at wave 8). And may be add some visual stats for all the units (hp, reload, telemetry) on the left and right sides of the screen, you have plenty of empty space there.
I see what you were trying to achieve with this one. Really great work with the level composition, enemies behavior, mystery, ambient effects and music. This game would extremely benefit from some additional sounds for enemy encounters.
Sound design is everything for horrors! I would 'play' with the player with some subtle 'red-eyes' blinking when enemy is engaging, may be some random chirp sounds, water effects in the dark (especially since you have such a glorious reflections), and certainly -- sound effects for different levels of proximity with the enemy. Overall a pretty solid entry. Never assumed I would worry about a water bug so much. :sweat_smile:
