Don't believe the gifs above, catching that buckler is bloody hard whilst dodging enemies. Great art, game play is fun and intense, small bug with the werewolf able to traverse the sky. Good work man, keep it up!

Great game. The shield is near impossible to catch after thrown and very difficult to control but it is very fun attempting to do so while dodging enemies. If you keep it up you might be able to publish this game on Steam.

Funny game! And the music (which is quite repetitive at the end) is really great! Nice work on it! The auto-generated map is cool. Maybe you should work more on ennemies (who just go on you). But... The sound is good and graphism too. Good job!

Simple but fun game! The music has some classic bomberman feel. The buckler seems to be randomly going around the player, sometimes it easily goes back to you but sometimes it doesn't.

Really fun game! Quite challenging, and had some great music. I loved the idea of using that boomerang style thing as a weapon, it was quite unique. Good job! I hope you continue this after the jam. :)

Cool game. I liked the graphics. I would prefer to restart in the level in which you died, instead of starting all over again, or at least have some more lifes or something. But overall a pretty good entry.

Was unable to play the game on Linux, but it certainly looks like a cool game. Perhaps you could provide a Linux build?

morrilet 2017-05-03 20:51

I really enjoyed launching my shield and dodging enemies, only to grab the shield again. That fast paced, reflex based gameplay was very fun. I do, however, have a couple gripes:

* Sometimes enemies are behind buildings without me knowing, and walking into the building causes an unexpected (somewhat frustrating) death. * It's really hard to catch the shield in most cases. * There doesn't seem to be an end.

These things can (I think) be pretty easily remedied, so they aren't a huge deal. Just notes for next time. Overall though, this was a good entry. Nice work.

Very neat, but I think maybe you should throw the shield less far and maybe zoom the camera in a little, it felt kind of sparse when the levels were smaller.

rixud 2017-05-07 04:43

i like the procedurally levels, i think the camera is a little far, i think is because you want the player the ability to see all map but for me was too far away. when you pass a level, sometimes the player walk over the air its a little bug but it is something to work on. Some times the shield behaviour seem to be weird, didn't go and come like boomerang otherwise they spin around like in orbit around the player... nice entry ! a lot of fun for me!

Shield controls is very interesting, requires some skill actually. Maybe to smooth this a bit some sort of "reset shield" ability with a cooldown would help. Or not just a reset but enforce to fly directly to a character.

Level 15 got me, but it was fun.

elemental-zeal-game-studios 2017-05-12 02:18

Game over is pretty punishing, but I liked catching the shield. It's quite satisfying when you hit two guys at once, nice job!

mrgussio 2017-05-15 20:30

Interesting game! Enjoyed playing it, I've never really seen a game with controls like this one. Really interesting how the barrel-controls work. If you'd like, you can rate my game here. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/earth-invaders

This is such a great mechanic! I love it! I could definitely see this being expanded with an upgrade system that changed how far and fast you could throw the shield, that sort of thing. The collision feels a bit unforgiving though, especially since the enemies take a second to die, i kept dying by moving into enemies after i'd already killed them. Nice work!

ocarson 2017-05-16 02:45

I thought the mechanic was well executed, had a lot of fun! I go in to more detail in this video. https://youtu.be/v2p2lrV26C4

That was pretty interesting to play!

I liked the concept of the shield-boomerang, but it was kinda hard to use. Maybe if the throw was a bit shorter in distance and time, it could be better. :)

anubhav-kashyap 2017-05-16 13:05

Cool game! I really like the procedural generation. Graphics are good. But it's really a very fun game!

Challenging game! Using a boomerang was quite hard, but fun!

joemid 2017-05-16 21:44

I loved this. The gameplay was just rough enough to go with the art- which has a great style. Concept and execution are spot on and the random level generation kept me playing. Congrats!

rockhoppergames 2017-05-17 17:00

Creative weapon games are always fun, so good work there! I can't help but question why it was a shield instead of just a boomerang, though? Perhaps if you worked on this further, you could add a risk/reward element where you're immune to projectiles while holding the shield, to emphasise its defensive elements?

rojo 2017-05-18 00:44

The weapon behavior is something I never quite felt like I mastered, but it was fun to use and an interesting mechanic. One of the enemies seemed to have a surprisingly large hit box. The levels were alright, but there was no pacing in the difficulty. Also, the sound FX were a little loud in the mix in my opinion. Overall good job!

kate-kligman 2017-05-19 03:48

- Love the music and the sound effects. - The shape of the overworld is fun to navigate while attacking monsters. I want to go into the houses -- they feel almost like a mini-game waiting to happen. :) Did you ever play Fester's Quest for the classic NES? - The buckler throwing mechanic is satisfying, but it's sometimes challenging to recapture the buckler. - The difficulty of the game seems about right for the levels.

Great job on this!

harry-alissavakis 2017-05-20 13:43

Really nice little game! The shield mechanic was really nice, but I'd prefer it if it was more predictable and consistent, because I didn't really know when the shield would come back. Other than that, it was pretty fun and interesting, the art-style while simple it was consistent and the music and sfx were quite good! Great job, well done! :D

P.S.: I don't know if you had the option since it's XNA and all that, but it's generally not a good idea to have an installer for a jam game. It's not very accessible and people ofter refrain from playing these games. It doesn't really matter for the quality of the game, but since you want more people to play your game it's a somewhat important factor.
