LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-03T16:42:07Z

Hey thanks a lot!

Edit: I just came home and the commenter above me might not have known (since I didn't add a description as of yet), but in this game you will connect to my server and play there. Well, he didn't play it. I'm not saying this to tell all of you, that I can snoop on you when you play this game (as a matter of fact, I'm not even logging IP addresses, I just know what the output looked like, when I tested it and it was the same when I came home). The way this game works really requires one to play on the server and I welcome all of you to enjoy the experience. However, I dislike how this person randomly rates a game in order to increase his chances of getting rate (is at least what I'm assuming is happening). Furthermore, I'd like to get sincere ratings of my game, even if people decide it's not good. Cheers

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-04T12:13:08Z

@shubart, thanks for the feedback, I think I fixed it.

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-04T12:37:35Z

I should've been more thorough in my testing. I have tested the application on a windows system now and have fixed the issue. Sorry for the inconvenience @shubart.

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-04T13:09:47Z

@syrapt0r, @serious07: I fixed it. Really sorry for all the trouble. You do not have to redownload the files as it was an issue on the server side.

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-04T13:54:44Z

Hey thanks, for coming back :D Yes, I wanted to have at least another two enemies on the game, but time ran out. Glad you liked it!

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-04T18:19:52Z

@erasmus-crowley, thanks for the feedback, I understand your points and they are valid. The reason why some rooms are empty, is because some other player before you had already cleared the room. Initially, the idea was to have a real permadeath, meaning that every player can only play once and then never again. However, I'm sure this would've annoyed a lot of people, so I didn't include it. However, by not doing that, I allowed player to "kamikaze" the doors (though I didn't initially think this is how people would play).

You are right though, there needs to be something that keeps the player occupied even when he's just running around.

Maybe I should have done the permadeath, but also had a way to open the doors without sacrificing yourself? I agree, that there is something lacking, but I can't think what that could be.

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-04T19:08:48Z

Any error messages @hamsters-actually ?

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-05T08:45:29Z

Hey @rumor! Yes I have noticed that bug as well and I didn't know what was wrong. What should happen, is the player sending the death note to the server (which works) and server replying, that it was received. When the player gets the reply, the game should close. That usually works, if you hit send and wait 30 seconds, but I have no better fix (and it annoys me as well :p). Here's what you can do: hit send, wait 5 seconds and manually close the game. You can of course try again then (just open the game back up).

This bug is a bit annoying...

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-05T08:50:01Z

@myfriendtames, what end do you mean? Noone got to the end as of yet.

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-05T09:34:04Z

Haha thanks for coming around, though that was not the intention of the post :D Okay a couple of people have complained about the send button, I'm going to fix it. @berkin, you got it pretty much. If you see the screen, that means someone else is currently playing and you have to wait.

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-05T09:56:32Z

Thanks @rolly, I'll return the favor. I might've forgotten to set the repeat flag on the music. I like the idea of losing one heart, though insta-death is of course more dramatic. I wasn't quite sure if the map is too big. Of course, when you die further into the map, a big part of the game is just walking back there, so that can be annoying for some people.

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-05T10:15:22Z

Hey @norfma, thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it (I'll get to the games of all the commenters as soon as I have the time!).

Yes, I wasn't quite happy with the soundtrack as well, though it was the result of not having enough time. No excuses though, I don't like it either as it is ;) The map is almost fully explored now, so I'll leave it as of now. But I think I'll reduce the size in the next run. It's a tricky thing to tweak, which probably can only be achieved through playtesting. (<- @rolly :D)

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-05T10:34:45Z

Interesting, @triplefox, I should check these games out. You are quite right and I'll probably lower the maps size on the next play through, but since it is almost finished I'll leave it for now. Displaying the doors on the maps would've been a good idea, I should've thought of that!

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-05T11:45:49Z

@ragtagradical, thanks for the feedback. Portals are a great idea, everyone in here has been really helpful. I'll have to check out your game later today, sounds like it's interesting!

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-05T12:05:03Z

Wow, @icxon, I'm impressed with your patience, it means a lot to me that you took that much time. I don't understand, why the doors don't open and that must've been really frustrating. I'm really sorry about that. I haven't gotten around to fixing the sending bug, but it might probably include restarting the server, which I'll only do once the game has been cleared. But thank you so much for playing! Edit: the video is really amazing!

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-05T17:46:43Z

I wanna say I have fixed the bug, where the send button doesn't work and the bug, where doors wouldn't unlock. I really hope it works this time...

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-05T22:17:51Z

Hey @icxon, did you redownload the client? Thank you so much for your patience :)

Morbid adventurer by PancakeFriday 2018-12-06T06:56:07Z

Wow, thank you so much @rumor. I really wasn't sure if I wanted to participate this LD, but I'm glad I did. It really feels great to be a part of such a generous community.

NOPE by icxon 2018-12-06T09:13:32Z

So I was looking forward to playing your game. The visuals are gorgeous, you really nailed it. The gameplay itself felt really polished and it got quite tense. Loved the small details, like lights going out, when [NOPE] passed over them. Really good implementation with the theme. I'd struggle leaving people behind but I had to do it to save most of the other people. Great job!

JOURNEY by Syrapt0r 2018-12-04T16:40:41Z

Nice, liked your game! It was fun, and a bit challenging. The mood was amazing, cool music and beautiful background. Wasn't a big fan of the upscaled pixel graphics (at least not together with the "normal" sized pixel graphics). Maybe the game mechanics could be a little more interesting, if the dash wouldn't go so far, but either way you did a good job!

Entry for 43rd Ludum Dare by burnedkirby 2018-12-04T17:36:26Z

First of all: The download of the linux files was quite slow (40kb/s), don't know if that's an issue with your server, that needs to be addressed?

Now for the game: The mechanics were'nt bad, though not very exciting either. An implementation of gravity good make this more interesting. It is also quite frustrating that you have to start all over from the start and I didn't understand how this relates to the theme. I still liked it though, well done!

Dungeon Runer by Andrea 2018-12-04T17:15:35Z

I did like the visuals very much. I was playing, hoping to get a sort of translation device. Since that didn't happen, here is how I understood the game. I collected these yellow things, which I used to buy attack power. Walking into the square I was presented a choice: Sacrifice myself or keep living. Upon sacrificing myself three times, the game reset. Still don't know exactly what's going on and what the overall goal is. But good job, I certainly played it a couple of times!

Dungeon Runer by Andrea 2018-12-04T17:23:54Z

@andrea, oh I didn't notice that was a different floor. What is the difference to the first floor? Is there some sort of translation device somewhere? :D

Dungeon Runer by Andrea 2018-12-04T17:45:43Z

Not yet @andrea ;) Edit: Okay, I can't do it.

Pirates may Cry by themarioga 2018-12-04T11:33:40Z

The WebGL link works for me.

I like the music, though it does get repetitive after a while (having the same problem with my music ;)). I feel like there should be a better response to the actions which the player chooses. You lose resources, however it doesn't feel like it's leading to either winning or losing the game. I appreciate the graphics, you have put a lot of effort in.

Bla v Raa : Eternal God Battle Brothers by ragtagradical 2018-12-05T19:32:27Z

I wanted to check out some more games today, but I got stuck here. I think this game is just amazing, 5 out of 5. It's all super cool and I don't have anything negative to say. Love it! Also, go red!

Fenik by Kataware 2018-12-04T11:59:11Z

Wow you must've put some long nights in! Good job. However, the game got easier without the companion! (And also, it's quite easy as is).

Riddles of Sacrifice by AdroitConceptions 2018-12-04T12:49:21Z

Cool, the last level got quite dificult! I enjoyed the game, though I feel the graphics were lacking a little bit. Also the enemies should maybe stay in their rooms or there should've been an indicator that there are enemies in the next room that are about to get you, because sometimes they'd hit you without you seeing them. Otherwise I enjoyed it.

HELL by Smeax 2018-12-06T10:59:10Z

I agree with @udo here. Your game is really fun, don't get me wrong. You're a young developer who's trying to make his way in this awful market that is game development. Your other game "One" looks impressive and I think you're a talented artist.

It would be fair to the other contestants, if you were totally honest and open, that you took the codebase of "One", modified some sprites and added a few lines of gameplay. The implementation of the theme is really cool and I'm sure you learned a lot towards the continuation of "One".

Other developers pour their heart into this game jam. They have 72 hours to develop a game and a lot of people take that time, hardly sleep and barely make it to release a polished game, yet here you are developing for "10 to 15 hours" and have a finished game. It just doesn't seem fair.

A boat trip to remember by jandourek 2018-12-04T18:29:24Z

Interesting idea and super cool graphics! I think the game could be improved by having a loading bar above the crates when opening them, otherwise 's all good man!

Infiltrate by Berkin 2018-12-05T10:44:37Z

Played the game, you might've been right about the 5 minute mark! When retrying the level, I gained back all my abilities, so It didn't feel like I had to sacrificing anything when getting caught. The game looked quite nice. Maybe the enemies could've had a mark above their body when they spotted you? This way, it would've been more visible. Also I think they reacted too quickly. Usually when they spotted me I had no time to react and kill them. I usually just tried to cloak my way to the end portal and that kind of worked out. I would've liked to see more complex level design, but good job on the game nonetheless!

Captain Cottontail: Certified Rocket Jumper by tomonaku 2018-12-05T10:59:09Z

Liked the game, I always had fun with rocket jumps in Q3, so I wasn't new to the concept. I couldn't progress in (I think level 10), where there was a saw moving horizontally above you, which you had to get past. Everytime I tried to rocket jump, I'd restart the level (even before hitting the saw). I think it was really a lot of fun and I'm always looking for challenging levels. Personally, I'd made the hitbox on the spikes a little smaller.

Purgatory by omercanbalandi 2018-12-04T16:53:46Z

Hey, so I liked the mechanics, though I think it should be noted, that the player can move with WASD (I didn't know at first). Furthermore,

---- SPOILER BELOW ----

I don't think there's a good reason to play the second level. Sacrificing a lot of souls makes the player plenty powerful to play the first level and farm souls there.

Again, I liked the game and I had fun, especially your background and menu are quite beautiful.

Not my Apples! by Marrack 2018-12-04T17:00:11Z

Interesting game, certainly quite innovative. Did I miss the music somehow? I think you had a very good implementation of the theme, because in my opinion, a sacrifice is something you choose yourself, which I don't see on many other games.

Fast Sheepment by Kasperejros 2018-12-04T11:46:11Z

The graphics are cute indeed! Here's a few suggestions for improvement: - Scale the game way down: It's difficult to react to the obstacles, as they appear quite suddenly. - Implement gravity: As of now, the jumping is linear and it feels unrealistic - It would be great to have a way to push the enemy back. I think after a couple obstacles, the enemy will just get you, independent of the clovers you collect. - A scoreboard would be nice. - The hitbox of the obstacles are too large.

Otherwise, good job on the game! (Also the past form of running is ran not runned :see_no_evil:)

Necromancer by Cameron Borthwick 2018-12-04T17:45:11Z

Was an interesting game! I think it could be a little more challenging though!

Human Meat Is Very Nourishing by Rolly 2018-12-05T10:08:50Z

That game was enjoyable! I had to let go (I think Kathy was her name), they said she was bad with the gun, so sorry for her. The game felt very complete. A menu screen, an intro and the whole game itself felt quite polished. Good job! (I couldn't figure out, what the fuel was for?). Also a way to buy other weapons would've been interesting, though I understand that you were probably under a lot of stress either way :D

Human Meat Is Very Nourishing by Rolly 2018-12-05T10:17:07Z

Interesting, in that case, maybe a small transition screen between levels could've been helpful, where the player watches the fuel diminish? :) You nailed the main part of the gameplay, so this is probably just minor.

The Apostle by Norfma 2018-12-05T10:32:03Z

Also a very interesting implementation of the theme. What happened, when I sacrificed the UX designers soul? In the end I couldn't see much anymore, due to all the shaders, but at least I had memorized the level enough for the RN God to heal me back up. I felt the rolling animation was maybe a bit too long, though of course if you'd made it shorter, it would've been more difficult to get below the laval ball. I'd appreciated either a longer level or more levels though. Also maybe a way to make the game more interesting, like obstacles you have to climb on, or maybe things like springs? Still had fun though ;)

Our Sacrifice by Keshav Sharma 2018-12-04T11:37:10Z

I am getting stuck in this screen. As there is no linux version available, I tried running it via WINE, so that's probably an issue. Could you release a Linux version as well? (Since this is a unity application, it should be possible). DeepinBildschirmfoto_explorer.exe_20181204123743.png

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Speed Phoning by TimBeaudet 2018-04-24T07:22:16Z

Holy balls, I didn't think it was gonna be that much fun. It took me some time to realize why my puzzle was shuffled all the time. After I managed to understand the logic of the game, I realized I could drive along the track without even really looking at it (now does that mean, I have the ability to drive while using my phone? :p). Guess it's a different kind of story if there was incoming traffic on the other lane however :)

Where is turtle? by PancakeFriday 2018-04-26T20:32:24Z

If anyone else has the same issue as @mrPenguin, I would love to solve it. We tried it both on linux and Windows (however, if you are on Linux, you need donwload Love2D, which is in most default repositories. You can then run love $downloadedfile.love to start the game). Cheers

Where is turtle? by PancakeFriday 2018-04-27T06:39:19Z

@mrPenguin thanks a lot :) What platform are you running on?

Shuttle Launch by Tero Pulkkinen 2018-04-27T14:26:46Z

It's kind of a trippy game. At first, we were a little puzzled on what the goal of the game is, until we read the description. Soon we found out how to get the points and transferred them to the rocket. The game definately made us feel like we were in a different world.

Funk Escape by Rolle 2018-04-23T21:06:47Z

The game's a bit tough with so many controls. Also I can't press too many keys at once on my system, which hinders the gameplay sadly. The music is very intruiging and I can clearly see your dedication to the craft though :)

Funk Escape by Rolle 2018-04-24T16:19:16Z

@rolle, I gave it another shot and tried it with the mouse and I gotta say, I dig it. Really cool music and after some time, you get used to the mechanics :)

Blind Vision by tsjost 2018-04-27T14:46:28Z

Loved it! The sound effects were funny and the difficulty was well balanced. Didn't take me long to get used to and I'm always a fan of simple ideas with a twist.
