Wish I had better rhythm so I could see more of the game. Hard to focus on steering the ship and playing the song. Got hard very fast, not a lot of opportunity to get used to the controls before the notes get fast

swarrly 2018-04-23 20:30

Yeah this game was the whole pat your head and rub your stomach at the same time thing. Very hard to keep both games happening correctly at once. I would have change the rhythm controls to WASD and had the letters on the falling blocks to help a little bit. Reaching to the R key was a little hard when my hands are so used to being in a certain position when playing games

hanra 2018-04-23 20:40

I keep trying so I can hear the full track , lovely game.

pancakefriday 2018-04-23 21:06

The game's a bit tough with so many controls. Also I can't press too many keys at once on my system, which hinders the gameplay sadly. The music is very intruiging and I can clearly see your dedication to the craft though :)

loonydrope 2018-04-24 06:55

This game is beautiful!

I liked the music track, and just like @hanra I kept trying to hear the totality of it. (though my time was way longer than a minute ^^).

But it was worth it because the unicorn!

I am usually not good at playing video games but this one made me go to the end, so I really enjoyed!

rolle 2018-04-24 07:28

@dwemthy; thanks for playing! Yes, it is a bit diffucult before one gets used to using both hands and brains (?) at the same time. We agree. But it also gets easier quite fast once you get a hang of it. Striking a perfect balance between difficulty was a challange for us, and a bit too short time to try out all types...

rolle 2018-04-24 07:29

@swarrly; thanks for playing and thanks for the comment! Yes, those are all good valid points. Maybe we could add alternate controls to the once you suggetsed also...

rolle 2018-04-24 07:31

@hanra; thanks @hanra! This comment makes @sawtan giggle of enjoyment, he sounds just like a little girl! With the hair, you might think he is one also...but his beard gives it away. ;-)

rolle 2018-04-24 07:33

@pancakefriday; thanks for playing Mr Pancakes! (we love those pancakes we too, but we eat them at Thursdays like the viking savages that we are) Are you using only keyboard or are you playing with keyboard + mouse?

Thanks for the kind comment!

rolle 2018-04-24 08:21

@loonydrope; thanks!! Really nice comment, makes our gamer-dev-hearts happy! Striking the balance of "just hard/easy enough" is always a challange!

Glad you like the :unicorn: , it was actually just a placeholder at first but it stuck somehow.

pancakefriday 2018-04-24 16:19

@rolle, I gave it another shot and tried it with the mouse and I gotta say, I dig it. Really cool music and after some time, you get used to the mechanics :)

gatinmnsok 2018-04-28 13:54

The balance between the two is really good, which keeps the game playable despite the multitasking. Although I found it quite awkward to play with qwer controls, but there has to be some challenge :)

neverautomatic 2018-04-28 18:50

Oh man, I am NOT good enough at rhythm games nor multitasking to do well in this game, but I do think it was well made. :D

balance686 2018-04-28 21:20

Great graphics/audio! I dig the text on the title screen. Cool mashup of genres that makes for a very challenging game. On my first playthrough I didn't have my browser window big enough and couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting the timing right (it was cut off just at the top of the bar the blocks have to be inside of). After maximizing it was easier because I could actually build up some ammo haha. I thought the ship movement was a bit too sensitive using the keyboard (takes awhile to stop after releasing the key) but I didn't have that issue using the mouse. Great concept/execution!

daveroony 2018-04-28 22:04

I think you guys made this game the perfect difficulty, having the drums switching beats just often enough and with just enough complexity that you have to keep yours eyes jumping back to the rhythm screen. I gotta say though, how can you make a game about funk.. in space.. and it not be P-funk themed that's just blasphemy!

rolle 2018-05-01 10:40

@gatinmnsok; thanks for playing and thanks for feedback! Yeah, if we would have had some more time to think about the game we might have chosen other controls. Seems it might not be the best option for a rythm game maybe...or maybe it is the perfect choice. We will never know. ;-) :musical_note:

jyrms 2018-05-01 12:42

This was fun and engaging but also SUPER difficult and unforgiving. I liked it.

psiv 2018-05-01 13:36

I really love the concept, it is realy enjoyable to play, and the rhythm section is really well done. I'm imagining a full guitar hero game with well know songs, but with a shoot em up, and I want it! I want it now! The clear distinct sounds for the red, green and yellow notes make them easy to hear and press the right button at the right time for, but for me the blue note was not as clear. Beats like the one in the picture below are perfect for this game, clear, catchy, easy to remember, meaning players can do the rhythm part by ear and focus more on the shoot em up aspect. ld41.png So if the rhythm section is easier, the shoot em up section could be made more interesting, maybe add some enemies that shoot you, make the asteroids move at different speeds, or maybe have a system where the more funk power you have the more enemies/asteroids there are.

tigerj 2018-05-01 15:32

It is very hard. Maybe extra lives or a damage system so there is more of a chance to finish the game. It is fun but very unforgiving.

szabe 2018-05-01 16:07

Man, this is incredibly hard. The sound effects are great, as for the mechanics, this isn't the first game I have seen during this jam, that uses this mechanic. As usual, it's very difficult to look at both screens at the same time. I like the overall aesthetics, though!

mandarad 2018-05-01 23:15

Like others have said, it's very difficult. But it's a cool take on the theme!

infinitycore 2018-05-02 20:40

It's incredibly hard to focus on both sides of the game. I can't say whether the music is funky enough (I am a musician who loves funk) because I can't get far enough into the game. Is there a place I could listen to it?

awesomealliterationalliance 2018-05-02 20:43

I have to confess, it was too hard so we played it with two people. We still needed 3 Minutes to finish, but we had good times. Nice job! The pixelshader at the end is awesome! :D

rolle 2018-05-03 19:43

@jyrms: thanks for playing please come again! ;-) We tried to make the game not to hard but it seems some people still have difficulty with it. A lot of our testers (friends/family) actually thought it was too easy...not easy to please all! ;-)

rolle 2018-05-03 19:46

@psiv: wow, thanks for that detailed feedback! We tried to make the music so that you could concentrate on the schmup and only listen to the notes. But it could probably have done with even some more fine tuning. But the time constrain...and so on... :-) Yeah, we had bigger plans for the schmup with just what you mentioned and levels and so on, but again, tiiiiime we had not. :-)

rolle 2018-05-03 19:48

@tigerj: thanks for the feedback! We think it is an excellent exercise of your brain this game! You will get smarter each time you play it! ;-) Finding the balance between too hard/just enough was a bit hard. Hmm, perhaps we should have made it even easier in the beginning. But fine tuing requires time, this we had not. =)

rolle 2018-05-03 19:52

@szabe; yepp this is a real exercise for the brainz! It is also possible to only listen to the music and look at the schmup with some training. :-) We had some interesting times trying the game on different friends/family but after a couple of tries most of them managed to get to the end. But more fine tuning would probably have been better... If only we had a time machine. :satellite_orbital: Thanks for playing!

rolle 2018-05-03 19:53

@mandarad; thanks for stopping by and trying it! Appreciate the feedback! :wave_tone1:

rolle 2018-05-03 19:57

@infinitycore: yes, this is an exercise for brain and eye-hand-coordination! Thanks for your feedback! And we can assure you that we had top scientist, professors and musicians performing tests and other important stuff in labs wearing white coats (also safety goggles) who came to the conclusions: Yes, by George, this tune is FUNKY! @sawtan wrote and recorded the music, I'll check if he has some link to it... :-) :musical_note:

rolle 2018-05-03 20:00

@awesomealliterationalliance: thanks for awesome feedback and nice team work of you! Our game is bringing people together! What's next, Noble prize perhaps??? ;-) It seems maybe our tests are not fine tuned enough and we perhaps made the game a tad too difficult too fast, so thanks for the info. We will consider it on our next game! :champagne:

cyrdach 2018-05-04 15:17

Nice idea and well done! :D it`s hard to play it alone but ok while in a couple :P the mouse controlling of the spaceship is a bit ennoying not really comfortable, but I find it making the game much more realistic... I mean like - who thinks, that piloting a spaceship is easy? xD nice job!

candlesan 2018-05-06 21:34

Thought the game was well executed. Rhythm game was fun. Music was solid. Shooter portion was pretty good. I didn't enjoy the multitasking at all.

archimagus 2018-05-06 22:22

I want to rate your game, as we made a rhythm game too but I don't get any audio from your game. If you have an idea how to fix the audio, let me know and I'll play again.

ddrkirbyisq 2018-05-06 22:53

Hehe, nice, reminds me a lot of [Synaesthete](https://games.digipen.edu/games/synaesthete). Please check the resolution on your WebGL canvas! Not all of us have giant monitors and I was only able to see the lower portion of the game window by zooming my browser out to 75%.

Mouse input seemed a little janky as the clicks sometimes didn't work; also not sure how you are doing your audio sync but it seemed to be prone to desyncs if anything went wrong (e.g. if the window ever lost focus). Other than that, neat concept.

rodrigo-denubila 2018-05-09 12:46

Very challenging game. Seems really polished with nice graphics. Good job!

Please, take a look at my game too: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/confessional

oneseedfruit 2018-05-15 19:25

It's pretty good!! But I need to practice getting better at the rhythm game part. Maybe make it so that when Q, W, E, or R is pressed, there's audio feedback. Also, different audio feedback for hit or missed notes.

huvaakoodia 2018-05-19 19:00

Interesting idea, splitting the player’s attention to two separate modes, yet it doesn’t quite pan out.

The rhythm section can be managed by ear. Seeing the blocks in the peripheral vision is also enough to do well, not that I can ace the tricker parts or anything.

The shmup side of things is way too simple. Dodging is a breeze and shooting only makes is easier as there doesn’t seem to be much of a downside to it. Enemies shooting towards the player would have heightened the tension by quite a lot.

I’m guessing the ship moves faster with more Funk Power in the tank as my second playthrough finished in 3 minutes rather than 4, but I couldn't see (or feel) an increase in the actual speed. What's going on with that?

Ok work in all.
