Cool game! I got 153 deaths cuz it was so hard XD

namae 2018-12-04 13:21

This was seriously amazing, I really love it. Some moves are really hard, but not not too frustrating. The audio is beautiful. You can be proud of this (please make more).

Amazingly polished!

kelbg 2018-12-04 13:26

Great entry! The visuals are simple but still aesthetically pleasing. The sound and the music go well nicely with it. The game itself is quite challenging and pretty fun. I also really liked how you decided to sacrifice game mechanics to fit the theme, it worked well and so you get bonus points for originality.

blodyavenger 2018-12-04 13:29

I sacrificed 11 minutes and 2 seconds! journey.png

I really loved the game, was it maybe inspired by Celeste? :) The puzzles are just great and the difficulty curve is almost perfect if we don't last level in the account, that one really pulled my nerve.

The only real complaint I have is that you were using some really big pixel art sprites while the rest of the game was clean (checkpoint flag & cannons). You have such a wonderful style in the main menu and I was wondering why not doing the rest of the game in the same minimalist style? Just a though for the future maybe?

Anyway, wonderful game, well done!

sam-hindson 2018-12-04 13:48

You really weren't kidding about it being difficult -- but that's why it was so fun! The music was also incredibly catchy. Well done!

m3rcurial92 2018-12-04 13:54

The game is really good, cool sounds and music, excellent graphic direction. It has a great difficulty curve, and the game is quite difficult on average.

The only problem is that you could have thought of something more original to stay on theme, but the game is really fun and challenging for how it is made, congratulations!

skyridge 2018-12-04 13:59

Very good ^^ Would your inspiration be the game "CELESTE" by the greatest chance?

larapoi 2018-12-04 14:14

Honestly a really good start: the graphics are simple but really nice, as well as the sound design. I like the ingame tutorial and the controls are very intuitive. But I can't comment more of the game because I can't stop dying! I just can't get through the "double jump" section. I'm so frustrated!

hukee 2018-12-04 14:29

Good game,It was something difficult ,and I try again and again that ready used to it. Final I Passed! ε=ε=(ノ≧∇≦)ノ Thank for you~~~

syrapt0r 2018-12-04 15:20

First of all, thanks for all the comments so far, I really enjoy reading all the feedback to the game ^^

@blodyavenger I am not very good when it comes to consistent artstyles and I spent way too much time on the sound design so I wasn't able to make the art more consistent. I agree that the minimalistic art looks better than the pixelart though.

@m3rcurial92 Yeah, I know that the game isn't really fitting to the theme. I initially wanted to make a top down game where you had to sacrifice NPCs but that didn't work out so I restarted with this game. I lost a few hours to resetting so I just decided to go with whatever came up.

@blodyavenger @skyridge Well let's take a look at the game files...

yep... seems like it was in my mind somewhere ^^

bartosz 2018-12-04 15:29

**Wow! What a great game - especialy for a COMPO! For me it's 5-star entry!**

I'm guessing you have some solid background in game dev - this shows!

Aesthetically pleasing, very well synced with music, solid movement mechanics, great level design, good dificulty progression.

**It feels like whole, nothing is lacking here!**

Great job!

One complaint would be - not really getting te 'story' part - why am i sacrificing those powers? What is this great blue cube that takes my powers away? And why once it took my power away but next time just 'teleported' me to other chapter?

blodyavenger 2018-12-04 15:44

@syrapt0r Haha, that a candy, thanks for sharing that! :D

j0ye 2018-12-04 16:37

Is this celeste? Oh, no it is not! It's his own game, which has a lot of strengths, for example the graphics and the music. It's not really innovative, but it's very polished and has a lot of good features.

pancakefriday 2018-12-04 16:40

Nice, liked your game! It was fun, and a bit challenging. The mood was amazing, cool music and beautiful background. Wasn't a big fan of the upscaled pixel graphics (at least not together with the "normal" sized pixel graphics). Maybe the game mechanics could be a little more interesting, if the dash wouldn't go so far, but either way you did a good job!

joshanthony1990 2018-12-04 19:20

Great game! I feel like the theme was prevalent here, as you had to sacrifice to learn how to beat the level. I think this was very polished, and the difficulty was just hard enough to be challenging, but not impossible. Well done!

zombie-virals 2018-12-04 21:51

Moar checkpoints!! That was tough bro, but kept me playing, good times with mental breakdowns on livestream!!

raivk 2018-12-04 22:33

That's an amazing game ! It feels so great ! Congrats

2018-12-05 00:42

Fun platformer! I included it in my compilation video series of games from the Ludum Dare, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/7Oqdb7VuCRQ

vimlark 2018-12-05 00:50

Awesome game. It's been said, but a few more check points would be great. Overall feel is awesome.

velvetlobster 2018-12-05 03:16

Oh I love Celeste, which clearly was an inspiration for this. The game is fun and the music is nice, I wish I could see more of the sacrifice theme in this however ...

martincohen 2018-12-05 12:16

I have this weird fetish for dash-based mechanics, therefore I like this one. Would love to see it finished post-LD as the levels seemed to have good ideas in them. Breaking through the wall would be so epic with some additional breaking effects, but that can be added post LD.

popdaddygames 2018-12-05 12:28

This game is freakin incredible. SFX: Perfect. Music: Perfect. Gameplay: spot on. I'm sharing this with friends.

stending 2018-12-05 12:50

What a great game, the music and sfx are amazing, the game feels great, even the idea of removing mechanics is great and theme-fitting!

One of my fav entry so far, it's crazy that you made all of this alone in COMPO!

Here's my score: Journey End Screen.png

nisepandakun 2018-12-05 15:44

Wow! Really well-made game and good use of dash mechanics and double jump! When you took away my JUMP, I was shook. How would I move upwards?

Overall well-executed game design, great idea of subverting my expectations by removing mechanics. Music and overall feel of the game is great as well. One of my favourite games of this jam so far.

uinelj 2018-12-05 16:03

The game feels so solid, it is simple yet so interesting ! Not confusing at all, rewarding, not easy nor impossible. Music and graphics are nice too, good job!

sadzanenyama 2018-12-06 08:44

Very good entry, especially for a compo. Good audio, good graphics, nice movement. Well done. My only problem is could you please let the player also use WASD to move around as some players like me don't like to use arrow keys.

arvejeitor 2018-12-06 13:20

Good entry! Simple art style but well done. Very solid gameplay.

syrapt0r 2018-12-06 13:51

@zombie-virals @vimlark My first design had way less checkpoints so I guess I already made the game easier than initially intended ^^ I realize that the game is still pretty hard but I wanted reaching the next checkpoint to be a challenge so I decided against putting more of them in.

@sadzanenyama WASD was the initial control scheme but my beta testers reported serious hand cramps from dashing in different directions so I changed it to arrow keys. The post jam version will have custom button mapping though.

plugworldg 2018-12-07 02:47

This game is a lot of fun I really like the dash mechanic in the game.

gaming-night 2018-12-07 09:25

Cool game here, i really liked the ambiance

That was pretty fun platforme, dashing is always fun, I should have add dashing to my game :) Anyway, the game wasn't that hard :)

JOURNEY - Opera 09.12.2018 0_03_42 (2).png

I like overal atmosphere of the game. Music, ending chapter, ending game.. pretty well done!

rumor 2018-12-08 23:35

*Very* cool. Probably the tightest-controlling platformer of the jam. You have a flair for presentation, the polish level is superb. Great audio, good use of mood. I felt the checkpoint spacing was a little mean at first, but considering how much the difficulty ramps up it turns out I really needed those extra practice deaths early on. Really just an awesome job all around.

hav24 2018-12-09 00:37

39 deaths in the first chapter and 49 death in the second, unfortunately I came only to the first chepoint of the third chapter, but than I ragequitted because checkpoint are too faraway and you need to redo too much. XD

The game is cool, and I got the sacrifice theme where every chapter you lose a movement. The very top notch is the music, it's a hit! Congrats! By the way it's a good and fun entry! Maybe the game will not please everyone, but to me it's a cool idea! Keep it up (and thanks for playing my game on stream)! :)

tom-kurcz 2018-12-09 21:01

Simple mechanics yet very well executed, well done! Special mention to the dash which is very fun to play!

antti-tiihonen 2018-12-12 13:29

Real excellent hardcode platforming with super snappy controls. Excellent.

falak 2018-12-12 17:22

Nice game! Quite hard but really well made. Good Luck.

arron-fowler 2018-12-13 11:29

Really slick entry. I liked the art style and the physics felt really good, I felt like every moment counted and that it did what I was asking it too. Very smooth game feel. If only my fingers were quicker! Nice to combine double jump and dash. Plenty to go on and take further. I liked the loading screens - bokeh like! Yes you should take your glasses off more often. Thanks for such a positive review on twitch, it has made all the hard graft worth while. See you at the next one.
