LD34 — Two Button Controls / Growing

Agent Hooker by Phoenix849 2015-12-16T04:34:00

Very very fun, has a real personality to it. I have no notes except that in the third room (the one that requires dual shooting your hook) and a couple other time I had to make a hook shot of faith into unknown off-screen territory. However, the iteration time after death is so quick that it didnt matter. Challenging but not punishing, and pretty damn clever; great job!

Mobsferatu by CremaGames 2015-12-19T07:06:00

The good:
-felt great to play/good controls
-fun level design
-stylistic tweaks and different uses of mechanics we've seen before
ex: the tail of mob members that both grew (like in snake/work) and how you lost members who got hit and could recover them (yoshi's island maybe?)
- looks super polished
-sorta hit both themes without making it seem shoe-horned in

the bad:
-not super innovative (which is fine)
-wish it was longer (which is also fine, a game this polished can't be super long with only 72 hours to make it)

Top notch work, my friend!

Slash Quest by Big Green Pillow ft Mgaia 2015-12-23T17:23:00

I've seen alot of games try to cram the two themes in to their own detriment... this game manages to do it really well and make it work for your theme and mechanics. Also the visual style here is stunning, the music, ugh damn...
Its so cute that the terrible violence I'm doing to these swamp creatures feels good.

You win. You win so bad you make me wanna quit.

Prisoners' Dilemma by jrc03c 2015-12-18T18:31:00

This is the most interesting idea I've seen yet, but I could not figure out how to synchronize my escape. I guess thats sort of the fun of it-- figure out how to communicate with someone who you cannot talk with. However, after you get killed the time it takes to retry is too long-- I wanna just start right over again instantly.

Very creative.

Robot Frost Eagle and Worm Big Rescue Adventure by sP0CkEr2 2015-12-19T04:03:00

Nice work! I like the paper cut out look of the eagle.

Xonatiuh by dementor561 2015-12-15T07:03:00

Looks and sounds great, but the gameplay gets pretty tedious.

Tama Battle! by midgard 2015-12-19T07:22:00

This is a really neat concept. I've been at it 10 minutes now and my Tama has leveled but hasnt physically changed appearance-- is that gonna happen? I'm very curious.

I also wonder (because finding battles is very quick and easy) am I really playing against another humans pet all the time when I fight. At first I thought it was all AI and you were just saying it was multiplayer as a sort of add to the realism of the game. Then I saw a pet named 'Cumeater". If you did program that in to trick me-- well done. It feels like some anonymous person on the internet named that pet.

Tama Battle! by midgard 2015-12-19T07:27:00

Also, this could be cool to develop for someones cell phone. A tamagotchi meets pokemon game with multiplayer where you can monetize micro-transactions by allowing players to choose how their Tama grows (gets wings, breathes fire, whatever-- could be purely aesthetic to avoid pay to win.) It could make millions I think.

Vines by Stfan 2015-12-18T18:56:00

Short, sweet, easy to understand. I have to admit I didnt know what to do when I started but when I figured out the mechanic with the light and the vines I couldnt help but smile. Nothing super innovative mechanically but hell theres a reason we feel nostalgic for the classics.

ORB LORDS by TravisChen 2015-12-21T07:17:00

I mean it's pinball so it's nothing super innovative, right? But DAMN does it feel good to play, look beautiful, and make my 3 year old son (and myself) happy.
The ball does get stuck at times though.

Also, Shift might not have been the best choice for controlling the paddles (or whatever you call them in real life)-- the most intuitive choice, yes-- but I got that damn sticky keys notification like a dozen times playing this game on the web

Divide and Conquer by Etag 2015-12-21T15:50:00

I agree-- the puzzles are just too easy. Basically I just click until all the white squares are filled and the red ones seem to eliminate themselves as long as there is a white one adjacent. It could also use a tutorial it took me a minute to figure out how everything worked.

Bounce-Charge by D3zmodos 2015-12-20T18:29:00

Neat. This was really stretching the growth concept though-- regardless its a cool concept. I played the 34 bit and the resolution/map size is kinda small for this kinda AI combat with 4 other opponents. Consider making the map bigger/putting some obstacles/things to hide behind maybe? Interesting idea though.

Spirit-uality by SgtBursk 2015-12-15T05:45:00

Once I figured out what I was doing I thought it was clever. a few more mechanics and line those button presses up with the music and it could be pretty good.

The Tournament by aare 2015-12-17T03:39:00

I loved the art style! And cool concept.

The Eye of Osiris by StoneMonkeyStudios 2015-12-16T05:02:00

Interesting game-- the controls felt a little unresponsive at times but I had fun. I liked the art style-- it reminded me of a marriage between Wind Waker and Ultima Online. Nice work.

Deblight by swinestudios 2015-12-15T06:29:00

I really enjoyed the music. could have done with a few more mechanics though

Empyreal Roving by barkergames 2015-12-17T03:18:00

Nice twist on the theme! I just wish I didn't have to land on the green pad to keep playing every time I ran out of lives. it really disrupted the flow.

Resonance by Starspell 2015-12-21T04:39:00

This was a great puzzle game and really could have benefited greatly from music but que sera, sera. Still it was a fun little exercise in lateral thinking.

Two things: It wasnt immediately apparent to me that I could place the same angled block twice.

I also "broke the game" by completing a room with just one single bullet hitting the gun in the next room and the camera moving me on. I couldn't re-grab my tiles in the previous room to fix it after the camera shifted. Might be a bug?

Excellent work though I really enjoyed this one.

Linear Crossing VR by Clavus 2015-12-17T23:03:00

This has a really cool look to it!

Tamagotchi Hell by Troyan 2015-12-15T05:50:00

good graphical style and interesting concept. I found it slightly difficult to find a pattern to the progression, but perhaps i was not observant enough.

Parascythe X by Neonlare 2015-12-17T04:07:00

Love art! It really looks great.

Tamám Shud by LBUncleJoe 2015-12-16T17:59:00

I enjoyed this alot-- the best narrative game I've played in LD34 yet. I just wish there were more player choice- some agency. There wouldnt need to be a ton either. Like, if maybe you continued to traverse world and meet other you's and each time they said more or less the same thing: this will always happen until one of us decides to end it. Then you let the player do something other than press the progress button to make the choice to end it themselves. Still, very neat

Heart Murmurs by Ludipe 2015-12-23T00:26:00

Liked this one alot-- the Matrix color scheme really lends alot to it (not for any particular reason, it just looks neat) I almost liked the title screen cooperation task to start the game as much as the game itself.

I did have to play this one by myself but I still found it quite enjoyable and very challenging.

A Unidirectionnal Game by mat1er 2015-12-20T07:08:00

I like the idea of letting the player whether he can move only left or only right-- thats what I thought that txt was about in the beginning but I couldnt move left.

Still, nice level design with the room-based system, this is something I havent seen as much. Not bad my friend, keep it up.

SlimeCraft by jacklehamster 2015-12-17T03:51:00

wow you did a great job of converting an RTS into two button controls. I'm impressed.

Unknown by Eshford 2015-12-21T16:34:00

Haha very cool. I've seen alot of rhythm games attempted in LD34 and this one was the most well executed I've come across. Also I like the retro aft style with a beat game rather than the PS era graphics I see in alot of them.

It was intuitive- but the only time I was left scratching my head was when I was holding down one key and had to presumably let go and start holding again during those streaks. I need it to be slightly more apparent when I'm doing well on the hold-it-down parts.

Anyway, excellent excellent work.

OVERGROWN . UNDERFED by Almax27 2015-12-19T18:40:00

Yeah I think you guys overshot your scope on this one: what makes RoR so engaging is the semi-random nature and the fact that you're pitting your desire to grab loot against your desire to progress before shit gets out of control with enemies over running you. Its hard to pull that off in 72 hours.

However, I will say it looks beautiful. I like the spiral-y grass bits and the tall grass at the very bottom. I just wish it was a little more focused-- like that it took one element of RoR and really ran with it rather than trying to be everything it could be once it was fully developed.

growing darkness by rijnswand 2015-12-19T17:26:00

Great ambiance but I think you used the 'grow' theme very liberally here. Still it is two button controls.

Also, the little wispy guys didnt seem to add time to my fire? Am I missing something?

Void by bakudas 2015-12-21T17:17:00

This game looks great and smooth and everything but the dragging seems a little unpredictable. Like, sometimes I could curb the momentum and bring the arrow only a little bit out but i couldn't figure out how to do it consistently. Fix the dragging and you have a real winner here-- it looks beautiful.

EarthWard by luke 2015-12-19T04:49:00

This is a very neat concept-- wrapping screen, limited fuel, always in motion, something at the center to protect against waves of enemies. Excellent combination of mechanics very novel.

I loved the triforce in the constellations too.

My only suggestion would be to have a little box-y map to show you where you are when you cross the edge of teh screen because sometimes I was disoriented as to where the earth was but... maybe that was intentional?

Zolander Bebop by ellipticaldoor 2015-12-20T17:50:00

This was one of the strangest things I've played yet. Right on! I loved it!

I like the concept too-- purposefully difficult controls, autofire, waves of baddies.

If I'm not mistaken too I think theres a nod to cowboy bebop in here with that rad jazz music when the enemies come in.

My only complaint: the camera was a bit janky sometimes.

Sphere Co.™ by kaype 2015-12-18T17:36:00

This game has a great mood going for it- ominous. I just wish there was more to it! I was expecting a wholly novel part of the game to start there when I pressed X to 'return to real life' but the game just ended I was kinda disappointed.

I think you could have also gotten away with including a theme judging if you would have made your max health increase rather than just having the gun heal you.

overall though nice job!

The Tower of the Tiny Wizard by lucentbeam 2015-12-19T16:45:00

The good:
-Great level design
-Difficult but not too punishing
-Smart choices with the theme
-fun

The bad:
-not terribly innovative

Impulse by Nega Drive 2015-12-20T17:42:00

This looked good and felt good to play-- it also had a very cute aesthetic. However, I was unsure what the win condition was (if there was one at all). I didn't know whether I wanted to be big or small or what color I wanted to be-- i just knew I did not want to be black, haha.

Spirit Hearts by Yword 2015-12-27T04:35:00

This was an excellent example of how to teach the player without holding his/her hand. You slowly introduced the mechanics in a very intuitive way; this is a great example of how to build a tutorial/first level-- I felt like I knew what to do in every scenario just from a glance around the room.

Top notch.

Star Eater by keyboardmonkey 2015-12-15T06:43:00

I like the character design! Wish this was a little more challenging though.

WALKER by piper82 2015-12-15T06:53:00

I was confused by the theme, at first I thought it was two button controls because you just move left and right, even though you interact with A. Then I noticed in the description that you're supposed to be growing weed.

A Genetic Mess by sprawl 2015-12-19T16:09:00

The good:
- although there was just music and not many other sounds, I LOVED the theme song.
- physics based breeding game!? Who could ask for more?

The bad
- long loading time to generate partners (this could be mitigated by generating fewer than 5 creatures at a time or just saving old ones and allowing the player to delete them as he/she sees fit so free up slots)

Attack In The Mushroom Kingdom by Monochrome Bears 2015-12-21T16:45:00

This is a solid one-- I'm a fan of chibi-ish sprites but I think the breast bouncing was a little unnecessary, haha. Anyway its more fun and challenging than it looks. It does a good job of making efficient use of your mushroom-folk feel good. I only had one little bug (or maybe this was intentional) but if I turned my mushroom folk to offensive mode and no orcs were on the screen they just walk off and die.

Let's Play Simulator 2016 by zulman 2015-12-21T17:01:00

This is very clever. If this truly isnt random then I suspect you had alot you wanted to say about the game industry and youtube culture and got to express alot of it here in satire form. Cool idea, but I felt like I was just picking what fake game I would want to play (which was fun) but if there was a strategy here I didn't get it.

I laughed pretty hard though when the MOBA came up and all the people playing looked super pissed.

Vine Climber by careless 2015-12-17T02:34:00

Good game. Controlled nicely. I didn't make it to the top but I enjoyed it even when I lost. A few more animations would have been nice, but overall good work

Cyber Dragon by mathijs750 2015-12-16T18:40:00

I actually enjoyed the PS1 style graphics on this one because they really fit the overall look of the game. I also had the problem with the buildings getting me stuck.

Super Lefty Garden Fighty by hexagore 2015-12-21T16:22:00

I agree with what most everyone has said-- the mechanics are solid, its fun as hell, and it plays smooth.

Normally I wouldn't say something like this except for someone who created a narrative based game but I wish this game had a voice over telling some kind of story about the world I'm playing in simply because the visuals are amazingly well done and I want to be in that world.

Great work.

Hand of Deity by Ludorverr 2015-12-19T06:21:00

THIS IS AWESOME. Coincidentally I was a big fan of both lemmings and (star/war)craft. This game feels like those games had a baby and you added a slow presentation of different powers for the player.

Seriously excellent job. Other than the lack of tutorial I have no notes. Bravo.

InfiniGrow by niccholaspage 2015-12-17T02:57:00

I liked the character animation a lot. I found the controls a little touchy though.

Gun Growers by thomz12 2015-12-17T20:28:00

I had an interesting moment in this one-- I was surrounded by zombies on both sides they were closing in and I jumped just to find that I was crowd surfing on them. It made me happy. I was less happy to find I couldn't jump off of the crowd of zombies and more and more just kept adding to the pile. Finally, I died and my gun fell on top of them while I was still firing and managed to kill a couple. It was entertaining, certainly... but I felt like the theme was shoe-horned in on this one.

RitualCraft by Squid Blink Games 2015-12-17T07:26:00

I liked this game. Very nice art and feel.

What really would put this over the edge if you decide to develop it further (especially for the web or a cell phone) would be waiting/unfolding mechanics Ala candy box ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptk93AyICH0 )

Like, if I could only hunt in so many spots (lets say 3) within the time frame of a half hour then finding unique crafting components would feel so much better.

Still nice job!

Alien Breeder by ItsFrank 2015-12-15T05:37:00

This has some potential. I'd like it if breeding maybe took a little longer. That way you'd have to think a little harder when picking what subjects to mate and what subjects to work. Additionally, with further development it would be awesome to see your creatures physically evolve as you progress. You could make dominant and recessive traits and go the whole 9 yards with the genetic aspect.

Greenvenge by Nizar89 2015-12-16T18:21:00

Nice game. The Rasta color scheme and reggae music made me expect a bunch of cannabis to pop outta the ground..

Goblinheart by ninjascript 2015-12-16T05:10:00

I loved the concept (especially since the main character is a goblin-- traditionally one of the least charismatic of the high fantasy races... I once rolled a half orc bard/warrior hybrid in a DnD-ish game my friend came up with and it reminded me of that. His name was Balthas Giggleberry and he was a gender-bending blast to role play).

Anyway, it's a shame you couldn't implement your full plan for the influence counter because I think it would have made this one really stand out. Nice job though! My only real complaint: all i have to do is hold down the charm button and then all I have to worry about are the harmful poison water tiles.

Lane King by LukeZaz 2015-12-17T03:01:00

Charming graphics and interesting idea. I found after the first few seconds I was able to just spam every button. Maybe make some sort of limited resource required for spawning?

Subcell by Chris Delta 2015-12-19T05:58:00

VERY cool! And a decent amount of parts and pieces to pick up for the time allowed. This is by no means a super novel idea but it fits the theme, its actually got tangible progression (unlike alot of LD games which feel like demos), and the enemies are also pretty variable.

I only wish enemies would have a little less health at the start it took a while to get going. I was fine with the floaty controls as long as my shots count more.

Billy's Big Day by Kitty553 2015-12-17T03:45:00

simple and fun. awesome job! the eating being synced to the music was very satisfying.

The Super Bros (that are not Brothers!) by Xinelu 2015-12-18T02:45:00

The bad: I wanted to get into this one I really did because it was a neat concept but it is very difficult. In order to make some of the jumps they need to be very close together. Also, it took me about 3 minutes to figure out how to let go of one button after I simultaneously make them jump-- that part just doesnt feel intuitive. if you would have put something in to move them closer together on certain platforms or, say allowed one to get on the others shoulders until the next time they land on a jump it would have really shined.

The good: charming, good concept, very true to the theme.

SUPER SCIENCE CORP by Hot Box Games 2015-12-19T18:18:00

This is a very well executed premise. I did have a hard time getting past a couple doors and I could not tell if it was a puzzle (did I have to sweep something into the doorway to keep it lodged open?) or a bug?

Still very solid game. The radio bit was a nice touch.

"Let me see if I can get this door open for you... Boop." Made me laugh.

Griffin Card by uheartbeast 2015-12-17T20:03:00

This is excellent. If something like this this was made into a game about fighting creatures with "alchemy" you could use it to teach freshman college chem students how to to balance equations. I know edutainment usually sucks but you're onto something here. Seriously nice work.

Also I'm pretty sure you're the same guy who I attempted to learn to pixel from on youtube based on your art style and name, so thanks for that too.

Save the Oak by Givit Game Studios 2015-12-16T18:55:00

the circle of life concept is cool but the game was not what I was expecting based on the description and logo ( I thought it'd be a bit more peaceful, haha)

My chief complaint: when i held down shoot my game made an awful noise.

Star Warrior by spolsh 2015-12-21T17:06:00

Daaaamn this looks nice. The tron meets star wars look you got goin here is very cool. Best looking 3d game I've seen yet and I think its because you made some really smart choices.

It plays alright, its a little difficult to have to get space between you and the worm in order to hit him since your boost and shooting are tied but I guess you were working under some pretty tight restraints.

I also LOVED that you made fellow X-wing AI and that you could accidentally blast your friends. That was really the kicker for me. Nice work.

Color Dodge by Abominas 2015-12-15T06:33:00

Loved how you used both themes-- it took a while for the difficulty to ramp up but I enjoyed this one. My only suggestion would be having score tied to something other than surviving a wave. Like, this is a half joke and half serious but it would be neat if each time a pellet hit you you got -1 to the score and the only way to beat teh game on hardcore mode was to finish with a score of 0/(max_waves). Nice job!

Nedrag by Indiestry 2015-12-18T17:56:00

Absolutely beautiful! Great mood. I didn't see the wasps anywhere but who gives a damn that was so pretty. Plus you managed to fit both themes in without it seemed hammy.

I mean as far as mechanics there werent many but that's okay-- not every game has to have jumping and shooting. Just goes to show sometimes its better to focus on perfecting one mechanic in your 72 hours rather than trying to cram a bunch of half finished ones into one game.

Lifenodes. by Remicy 2015-12-19T06:59:00

Like everyone said this is art. I feel like I know you a little bit better now.

Space Defender by ImYellowFish 2015-12-21T06:54:00

Nice look, nothing too novel but pretty fun. I wish the area of the map was bigger though. The sounds are a little much at times also.

Agropolis by Magicolo 2015-12-18T18:29:00

Very calming game-- like playing with lego's or an even more distilled version of what makes minecraft fun. Develop this for a tablet and sell it and you'll probably make some money-- my kids would play for hours and as a parent I'm willing to play at least 5 dollars for that.

Odd Binary Run by Nattack 2015-12-17T20:21:00

Interesting incorporation of the two button theme (that everything is binary) that's what this had going for it. In that vein i think you might have gotten away with a more literal with the concept and had your buttons only affect player action when they were held down (1) or not held down (0). I'm probably just overthinking it tho. Your game was more committed to the theme than many I've seen.

Guardian by TheMeorch 2015-12-15T05:43:00

was I doing something wrong or could you not attack after picking up the baby?

The Artifact by nunesbarbosa 2015-12-22T23:53:00

Damn good, but short.

Putting the little paper person in the ball and having that small amount of dialogue about the buttons really gave this paper world some character and a sense of scale too. Nice touch.

Simple game and I liked it alot when the ball did what I thought it was gonna do.

Desperate Vessel by mr. a 2015-12-15T06:15:00

Colony XG-29 by juxipolo 2015-12-17T03:13:00

nice idea, but to be honest, a bit overwhelming. a tutorial and maybe a refinement of the cards available I think would benefit this game.

The Flower by Sublustris 2015-12-21T06:12:00

The notes:
-wish that I got to move onto different levels as the plant grew.
-You managed to hit one-button theme right on and shoe-horn in the grow theme and I really don't think you needed to. It doesnt hurt but it doesnt help because its a little confusing when the theme category is being rated.
-as a musician i think the music is good but a little grating
- if you're going to be moving through the same level to grow the plant there should be rewards for finishing it faster since the strategy here (I think) is about learning the most efficient way thru the level

The praises:
-Great aesthetic and character design (I loved the machine that sucked your water out)
-thought out level design
-tough but fair (our game was only one of those things)

Interesting-- and surprisingly pretty. I'm sure this decision was practical but I love how if you look at the trees they are always facing you. Creepy. Kinda uncanny. If you develop this further dive more into the spooky and strange.

constructive crits: wish I could walk faster.

Biorhythm by prymidion 2015-12-18T18:49:00

I absolutely loved this game. It's poetry with a visceral biological theme- I love it.

I was going to say I wanted a tutorial-- something really quick thats also really hand-holdy because at first I really didnt connect the rhythm mechanic with the circle around my mouse... but honestly I figured it out after maybe 30 seconds.

Excellent excellent work.

1 Button Wizard X2 by BoxedMeatRevolution 2015-12-19T16:16:00

The good:
Neat concept and true to the theme: attacks are determined by length of pressing buttons/button patterns.

The tutorial was very good

The bad:
I wish the sprites were a little more detiled but I can't fault you for that because the mechanics are solid.

Nice work!

From the Deep by scorched 2015-12-23T01:05:00

This was very very cool. I wish the web version had a larger screen size or that you had a windows download because the screen in my browser was tiny and I couldnt figure out how to fix it-- which is a shame because I love the sprites and tiles.

What the PUCK? by sbot1101 2015-12-20T06:53:00

I got two players for this one, but the other one was my girlfriend who didnt really seem into it (games arent her thing) so I'm gonna use my imagination in a positive way as much as I can when rating this one. I imagine it'd be also of fun with a bigger rink and maybe up to 6 players-- this way once one guy got big the other 3-5 could team up. The controls are very solid and intuitive also. Nice work!

Grunnist by Alpenter 2015-12-17T18:33:00

I really like the semi random nature of your endless runner/platformer/shooter (and I havent said that to anyone yet)

The random weather set the mood real nice. You made some very smart choices with the aesthetic that allowed you to focus on the gameplay-- and i think that shows.

one question: does this go on forever? I dunno if it did or if I'm just very bad at it.

Jack's Revelation by Mr. Chocolate Salmon 2015-12-17T03:20:00

cool idea, I would have liked some indication of if I was close to a power, but I like the idea of puzzling with the abilities you have to get new ones and then doubling back.

Polygonal Expansion by GogglesKitty 2015-12-16T18:15:00

Nice concept, very difficult though for some of the reasons often mentioned in other comments: namely that there are no audio cues for missing/hitting your mark with the color matching. The score being kept in percentages was also a bit difficult to grok. I have a desire to press the keys to the beat for sure but rotating clockwise or counterclockwise combined with that might be too much for my brain to manage. Nice change of pace from most of the games I've seen though.

Tripper by Frozen Stick 2015-12-21T16:29:00

If I was tripping and defending myself from waves of what look like multicolored butterfly space ships I think I'd freak out. Thats what this game feels like, haha-- mostly in a good way. The sound of the auto-firing gun however needs to be minimized somehow it gets very grating after a while.

FLOW by Romixal 2015-12-16T16:10:00

Not sure if there is some secret thing after you get all 4 pieces but wow. This was a trip. I've never gotten such a feeling from a game-- "I'm so close..." but I'm so lost. All while feeling pretty tranquil.

I think the trick here if you want to find the peices is to play with your eyes closed. I was examining everything I could at first-- trying to find a pattern in the waves along the lines with my eyes and the game became easier when I stopped and just used one sense. Great great job.

RUN For Your Life by bentglasstube 2015-12-17T19:45:00

Is the music yours? Its really awesome.

Vine Runners by ss64games 2015-12-19T16:37:00

I loved this one! Can't wait to get some friends to play it with. The AI is pretty good though and this type of game was a great choice for multiplayer since the AI probably wasnt super hard to code. Very smart, good aesthetic, intuitive controls and mechanics (although it took me a minute to figure out which vine I was in single player)... good iteration time between games for single player; I had some nice relaxing fun with this one.

ScaleFlexes by ansoneh 2015-12-19T17:38:00

Wow; this is surprisingly fun for how simple the concept was. Seriously I played this one more than aot of games with far more mechanics. A very stripped down idea with no extra bells and whistles sometimes makes for very entertaining and engaging content.

Hyperdemocracy by Dreyan 2015-12-17T18:45:00

This was so immersive -- the most of any game I've played in ludum. It felt like there really were other players on the other side of that chat. Hell, I wish there were I'd play forever (COULD YOU PLEASE MAKE THAT HAPPEN NEXT?!). Excellent job!

There's No Going Back by XAND 2015-12-16T07:06:00

Excellent. Just Great. I want more.

My only complaint (sorta): I fell off the end of level 5 and had to redo it. but I didn't mind! I was actually interested in doing it more efficiently

Yggshroom by Ghen 2015-12-16T15:06:00

It took me a minute to get what was going on but once I did this game was pretty fun. I somewhat expected the Yggshroom's cap to protect me from the falling projectiles.

The War of Japants by Blobo 2015-12-21T05:00:00

I really liked the vertical run up that wall, that was a cool surprise.

his was a quirky endless runner but it suffers alot from the controls feeling unresponsive. Also, some of the jumps are just not spaced right-- like theyre one tile shorter than the length of the jump.

We also made a very difficult game though so I get it-- you play your own game you get tunnel vision because you play it yourself so many times you start designing challenges for yourself while test playing and as a result the game gets real hard.

IVY by TRAB 2015-12-17T05:20:00

I loved this one. Simple yet innovative, fun yet challenging, great aesthetic and music-- it all comes together. You really hit all the points. The difficulty ramps up a little quick but other than that superb job.

Blobitronica by crucknuk 2015-12-25T14:11:00

Nice looking game, plays smoothly, and the music really tied it all together. Not terribly innovative but awfully fun. I wasn't able to test 2 players so I hope I'm being fair in just rating it on the single player mode; two players seems like it would be a blast.

Little Big Dash by Evannex 2015-12-19T05:12:00

I loved the concept-- in fact we did something very similar with the platformer genre rather than the pseduo-random endless runner. Actually I think your works better because of the low iteration time and infinite progression. We also wanted size to affect jump height but failed to get that in on time and now I wish we did because it feels very good to jump higher as you get bigger in this game.

Also you managed to hit both themes which is cool.

Like alot of commenters I think the main snag with the gameplay is that it requires you to focus on both the very turbulently changing floor and the ceiling which changes less drastically and you tend to forget about the ceiling until its too late. I think if you shrank back to original size alot more quickly than you grew this problem would be resolved.

Overall: Nice work, my friend.

2Door by Polith Games 2015-12-20T17:13:00

This is very very polished and focused. As a musician I really enjoyed it and went through a couple replays just for the ambiance and to see more skins on the rooms.

I just wish there was more of it-- I mean its already like a super pretty and immersive version of Simon, right? so why not run with it- add one extra note to the music patterns each run.

Still it looked very professional and put together, good job.

2 button metroidvania by JaJ 2015-12-23T17:12:00

This was damn hard but rewarding. The part you had to specify in the description-- where you need the bullet jump thing... I think the reason I got stuck there was that I did not realize that with my wall jump holding down A would extend the jump/let me wall jump further. I knew I had to get back up to the top part to get that power up I saw right at the top but it took me 5 minutes or so before I figured out how to use the wall jumps right.

blackfisk by Acerio 2015-12-15T06:19:00

good game. I really liked the art. would have preferred a different representation of health aside from transparency, but still good

Playing With Fire by sonelliot 2015-12-19T06:49:00

The good:
-Looks very polished
- feels great/fun to play.
- Level designed well
- tweaks on traditional mechanics. You had a snake/warm (growing trail behind you) meets yoshis island (you lose mob members if they get hit but can recover them) thing going on
-great use of both themes

the bad:
-not terribly innovative despite minor details (which is fine)
-wish it was longer (but i understand with this level of polish)

Really top notch work.

HeXor by Sosolol261 2015-12-15T07:02:00

I like the idea, although it moved a little slow for my taste. clever unite names though

Line/Dash by Eingya 2015-12-19T19:32:00

Very cool use of simple geometric aesthetic.

'Addicting' is about right. Nice job friend.

Please Mamma by nlbi21 2015-12-20T17:24:00

This is a funny skin to put over a runner-- I liked it despite the crude visuals. Some nice touches: How mama throws different things depending on the environment, using levels rather than just running endlessly (this was a nice surprise), The gag props in the background.

pretty cool.

Please Mamma by nlbi21 2015-12-20T17:26:00

This is a funny skin to put over a runner-- I liked it; despite the crude visuals the punk rock kid and the angry mom really give some character and story to what might otherwise be just two blocks in a chase. Some nice touches: How mama throws different things depending on the environment, using levels rather than just running endlessly (this was a nice surprise), The gag props in the background.

pretty cool.

No Rush by jirrev 2015-12-17T20:53:00

My favorite semi-random arcade style game so far. Very fun, smooth gameplay. I know this is asking alot bc i dunno if thers a host site that would support it but with these types of games I wish you could see the LD-wide top score so I could try to beat what other plays did rather than competing with myself. But again, thats asking alot.

You did a good job of making blocks and shapes have personality (better than most I've seen) but I after seeing so many sometimes I just wish the little square at least had eyeballs and facial expressions or something.

All this to say: sweet game brother.

earth defense by wavegunner232 2015-12-17T02:28:00

pretty tough haha. nearly impossible on hard. Music makes me nostalgic though :)

HACK THE PLANET by jasoncoan 2015-12-19T03:16:00

Looks cool, but I feel like the movement is too sensitive.

Botany by Steven Miller 2015-12-20T18:19:00

Great job man, this one really stands out. It uses teh theme well, theres a decent amount of gameplay and story here for a 72 hour game. Also pretty good use of enemy placement for your mechanics-- alot of guys hiding around corners so you have to plant your random plant monsters and then bite and kite. Awesome.

I was surprised to play as the plant, I thiought I was gonna be Joe (or whoever) and the plants were gonna be bad guys. I am glad I was wrong.

SportsRaces by Patomkin 2015-12-18T18:19:00

This game is very well designed and has alot of features for something you made in 72 hours:

I know others have said the controls feel floaty but I think that was intentional and a good choice-- it would be too easy otherwise.

The pre-race eating and store were a great difference in kind for the gameplay to break things up between races

It was definitely alot of fun. My only criticism is I think you really tried to jam in alot of stuff that fir the grow theme in order to check both 'two button' and 'grow' off the list-- it was fine as just being a two button game in my opinion.

Nice work, my friend.

Spinning Around by DinnerInTheDark 2015-12-23T00:57:00

This game looks beautiful and the puzzles feel really rewarding. Although I think most can be solved just by exploration I really really enjoyed the one with the three switches and the gates. Loved it.

Battle For Bedroom by monetai 2015-12-21T04:53:00

Hey this was a fun little 10 minute play for me and my girlfriend. The controls are really floaty though and not in a good way. The art style is very original.

Hello Darkness by jcmonkey 2015-12-19T04:36:00

This was a nice attempt and had one of the better non-text tutorials I've seen in LD. Additionally this game has lives and I was surprised to realize I havent seen that yet in LD34.

The thing about it is I think you have too many mechanics here shoved into one game-- I wish it was more distilled. Theres darkness, a timer, lives, mines, buttons to press to open doors which is all fine but I feel like they didnt reinforce a central theme.

Also, dunno if I was missing something but there really needed to be aggro on the slimes and a chase code because if i run out of mines and a blob is pathing thru my only path I have no way to get past him because my mines didnt refill when I died.

Tycho Recon by NoradZero 2015-12-17T03:59:00

quite difficult, but I like it that way. Good work.

Find The Light by B0pt1K 2015-12-17T02:42:00

surprisingly addicting. I felt the collision with he rocks could be a little inexact, but good game. Just need some music for atmosphere

Ghoul by parias001 2015-12-15T05:52:00

I like this games style!

Ogre Smash by muffty 2015-12-17T21:10:00

The graphics were not my cup of tea and I dunno if I know whats going on but my 3 year old son only wants to play this game now rather than hours of super mario maker so thank you for that. (not sarcasm)

Charlamagne's Sound Train by craigoryham 2015-12-19T03:44:00

I enjoyed the hand drawn aesthetic, but wasn't really sure what I was supposed to be doing. I picked up a whale though that was cool and I shot my flatbeds forward. Then it ended.

Those poor birds! Very charming. good music. I liked it a lot

NanoBit by Weeping Rupee 2015-12-19T05:17:00

"I just want to say that I tried to see how big I could get and I got so large that the game had me "start" again at the spawn point but all my progress was saved. Interesting little bug."

ah ha! see I let my 3 year old son play the game and I looked back and noticed the spikes were gone but he was normal size again at the start of the level-- I was really scratching my head over it. Thank you for that little report haha.

NanoBit by Weeping Rupee 2015-12-23T16:51:00

@g12345 just wanted to say, since a couple people seem to be missing it, that you can also use the enter key to shoot. You don't have to use the mouse at all. It shows that in the controls at the beginning of the game, but maybe that needs to be made more clear.

NanoBit by Weeping Rupee 2015-12-23T17:31:00

Also, honestly this game was made to be played with a D-pad on an Xbox controller. The keyboard controls work but I really suggest plugging in your Xbox controllers to experience it right. The keyboard keys were kinda a compromise to begin with...

NanoBit by Weeping Rupee 2015-12-25T19:03:00

@ napoleon

Just wondering-- did you use xbox controller? Not sure how to message your personally through here.

Sector 9 by alvaromartin 2015-12-15T06:35:00

Very well polished. I would have enjoyed a tile set change up, but all around good work

Chris Rostcowsky - The game by Shovix 2015-12-19T05:41:00

Offensive... but decent gameplay.

I wanna focus here on why its offensive: not because you used the word "retard" but because I believe you probably did it because you thought you'd get a good humor score. The word retard is a super cheap laugh and it feels patronizing that you think I think it'll do that.

Carol and the Beanstalk by MestreRothWP 2015-12-15T06:00:00

Good work adding both themes into this. The two button controls, however, felt like it was more limiting than helpful. I liked how quickly I could retry and the UFOs were a nice touch.

The game of life by Frank_Hiroma 2015-12-17T03:27:00

Great sound, great design. just wish it was a little longer :)

The other side of the portal by mahjong50 2015-12-21T05:14:00

There are no mechanics here, but that's fine; I can tell you're an artist at heart. Good attempt for a first entry-- you knew your limits and went weird, which I admire.

Tentaduel by SovietBear 2015-12-19T03:36:00

I'd like there to be some kind of feedback indicating when I'm actually taking damage.

push your button then punch by 525 2015-12-21T05:25:00

This is a really fun concept-- its a little race in a maze between two players and then one gets to try to punish the other if he gets to his finish line first.

The part with the hands reminds me of captain falcon's super smash in SSB brawl.

My criticisms: while the mazes and finish spots are generated in a competent and balanced way it seemed like the only way to finish within time was if the finish spot happened to be very close to the players. There should be more time for people to figure out the maze when the goals are far away so that it becomes a game about whose eyes can trace the path back to their sprite the quickest. Also, I suggest making the BG black if the walls are white because its a bit difficult without a stark contrast between wall and open space.

I like this concept alot though and I really hope you develop it further. Some occasional baddies could be fun but I know its hard to create competent AI that doesnt interfere with your main mechanic within 72 hours.

Great idea though, top notch.

Protoplanet by Benjamin-L 2015-12-15T06:41:00

best I've played so far, hands down. Great atmosphere.

Tech Rider by MrJoshuaMcLean 2015-12-15T06:10:00

nice use of the two button theme, I am really bad at this though

it grows! by skripteriant 2015-12-17T07:09:00

It felt good turning into the fast monster. It felt bad eating the chickens but I did it anyway.

Absorb this information and do with it what you will.

Beatz! by PC Ferreira 2015-12-19T16:29:00

Fun game-- good music choice for beat.
I didn't see any penalty for spamming my wave blast though. Not all games need a penalty for hitting on the off beat but I think this one could have.

Omega Llama! by yumaikas 2015-12-21T05:08:00

This game is kinda silly and really clearly unfinished (ex:the rope seems to have no purpose but to extend or retract) but I think there's something here.

If your intent was to make a sort of game thats like space invaders but instead you're defending several planets which you can jump between (with the rope) then I think that's an idea worth exploring so keep it up. However, the growing planets seemed tacked on for theme purposes.

Son by Henriq 2015-12-21T06:31:00

You did a great job of reinforcing that feeling of loss and sorrow and I really liked what you were trying to do here so keep that in mind when you hear my criticisms:

I wished you had focued more on the story and telling it thru the environment. You did this to some degree but rather than drudging thru enemies that walk toward you as you're really just trying to read the text at the bottom takes away from the experience. Let me go into those buildings. Let me read the old blood stained books in the library from The Inquisition or whatever. I want that!

I want to know more about the world-- I get that you're painting in broad strokes here but if you elaborate just a little it makes me care about that world more-- ideally, you dont want to have to put the phrase "was the son's sacrifice in vain?" on the screen-- you want to create that feeling/thought in the player. In fact I think with a little more to explore and a little less text at the very end there you woulda had that in the bag. Like, after you become the bg dark thing when you say "you became that darkness and controlled it" it eliminatd my first thought which was "oh this was a trick by some evil god to make me the force of evil" or "oh there is no way to defeat the darkness"

Sorry for that rant but take it as a compliment that your game made me think this much :)

Sky 1513 by vedmich 2015-12-21T06:00:00

80th percentile, definitely. I played this one for far longer than I played most ludum games just because I became so attached to that little floating island.

Great twist on classic mechanics, if this concept exists elsewhere I havent seen it.

My criticisms:
-I wasnt sure right off between the green and yellow tiles, mixed them up quite a bit but that might be my visual acuity or a color constancy problem psychologically.
-Wish the rocks fell slightly faster at least to start with because there is no tutorial
-I am still not sure about the falling comets because at timers theres no way to avoid them you just have to decide which piece of upgraded land (if you have any) takes damage/gets destroyed. This is kinda cool because its like this unavoidable thing but the player still has choice... but the consequences are all negative. Maybe thats okay though, I havent decided where I fall on that yet (pun intended!)

Nice work. Seriously.

Fagocitech by hostile 2015-12-21T05:46:00

The sprites in this game are top notch, wow. The controls are responsive and its fun to play definitely-- a little on the easy side, though but that might be explainable in the upcoming section.

However there were alot of bugs:

-Clipping though walls and getting stuck
-Player sprite seems to be an all white version of hitbox
-Doors not working
-Not taking any damage, unable to die in some runs?

It was alot to endure but I tried my best. I think with some fixes this game is very solid.

Feed the Queen by sitronTe 2015-12-21T05:31:00

Solid mechanics, a bit simple. The difficulty ramps up a little fast though.

Frog Well by g12345 2015-12-21T06:35:00

EXPURGET by xodene 2015-12-21T06:42:00

EXPURGET by xodene 2015-12-21T06:52:00

Whoops sorry I meant those comments for another game. This is for yours:

I really liked the way meta dialogue in the beginning of this one. That combined with the unique color palette and aesthetic really lends character to what would otherwise just be a game about surviving an infinite onslaught.

Anyway, I dunno why you didnt include a humor rating bc that dialogue in the beginning was super clever and I'd give you a good humor score for that.

NO HOBO by Teren 2015-12-17T08:14:00

HA! This is the first game that has felt appropriate to use the "Humor" category with. I legitimately laughed (both at the face the guy makes as he becomes hobo and at the title-- before I even knew it was cleverly describing the mechanics)

Charming. very charming.

Switchies by SwitchTeam 2015-12-17T04:59:00

Nothing groundbreaking but certainly a ton of fun. Felt the most like a "real game" compared to alot of things I've played.

City Strike by PeachTreeOath 2015-12-19T03:53:00

Interesting concept. It would be cool if you could have your workers cut down the trees or something for better shots.

Belly Smash by Drunkain 2015-12-19T05:02:00

This is by far the most polished gave I've played yet in LD and it really was a blast to play. I didn't have someone to play it with unfortunately but I imagine it would be even more fun.

I imagine thats the trap of making a game that meant for multiplayer in an LD jam/comp; most ppl wont play the game as intended.

Still, its great.

My only criticism (a tiny one): against the AI aggressiveness seems to trump size.

Two buttons to save the city ! by LavWa 2015-12-19T19:29:00

I like the binary theme and the fixed camera with the view out the window-- very cool.

Its a really interesting and smart way to do what alot of other games accomplish with jumping in an endless runner-- all the info is in front of you and the clock is counting down.

The empty red-bull-esque cans on the desk are a nice touch.

Hope by Jace239 2015-12-15T06:29:00

I like how you translated the two button theme into a light vs dark motif.

Grrrrrowing by redmassacre 2015-12-16T16:22:00

interesting concept -- wondered if you were trying to use both themes here? If so, good work!

XPORT: Address Unknown by Icel 2015-12-19T19:00:00

I get it conceptually-- its a game about using space efficiently. However, I believe this game needed a tutorial. I felt like I had no idea what I was doing.

Birdie by ebcortez 2015-12-19T18:54:00

This game was cute-- I loved the voxel style, made me wish this was a giant multiplayer game where we're all little animals just trying to feed our young. Very cool.

Notes:
-Hard to see tangible progression quickly-- if I fell my pockets and return to the next nothing changes graphically. Its hard to connect being a mother for my little chicks with the Grow theme when I dont see growing eggs.

-The ambient noise is great but the game-noises (walking, flapping) are kinda redlining and sound a bit grating.

Nice work!

Where It Begins by newbeings 2015-12-15T19:17:00

Where It Begins by newbeings 2015-12-15T19:23:00

The aesthetic is wonderful, the music sets a great mood-- I wanted to see more of this world... right on! I love the eyeball thing you turn into while swimming. Puzzles were simple but intuitive.

My only gripe: (Wish I could walk as fast as I could swim though)

The Climbers by NirabazGAMES 2015-12-18T15:05:00

This game was very fun (I played with with my 3 year old son after I tried it solo). The two button theme with two players is hard to pull off and I've seen alot of games suffer for trying to pull off something that can be two player or single player when they would have just been better off with the latter. This game does not suffer from that trap.

My only complaints: the host site kept crashing the game. Also, it would be nice if the appearance of the flying enemies (the ones the approach horizontally) was telegraphed as well as the falling enemies-- maybe some audio before they appear along with the same little caution sign you put for the falling enemies-- just put it on the side of the offscreen area they're approaching from?

Grow a Beard! by martin-denizet 2015-12-21T15:02:00

This feels a lot like a series of quick time events within another game just strung together. Still, its... interesting. I think you're probably going to clean up in the humor category, but it didnt tickle my funny-bone personally: Felt too much like nonsense youtuber humor.

The minigames themselves were kinda hit or miss for me-- Either they were very intuitive (ex: pick the manliest phrase of these 4) or not very intuitive (still dont get how to win the beer drinking one?)

Still it looks very nice.

Tiny Tyrant by tyrants.not.found.team 2015-12-21T15:31:00

This game was very cool- combining memorization with this theme of campaigning as a politician...I think? The title says I'm a tyrant and yet I need the support of the people for some reason. Not quite sure what the political structure of this society is, all I know is with enough support from the public I can make cannibalism legal.

Anyway the game has a message and paints political figures as these sort of Yes Men or Parrots. I think alot of people will get behind that.

One thing tho: I think this game will suffer from a steep interest curve and low replayability. In the beginning, while I'm memorizing patterns I'm bound to make alot of mistakes but the patterns on the arguments are always the same so once I memorize them all there is basically no challenge anymore. Rather than randomizing citizen sprites, I this can be easily fixed: keep the pattern length the same and random which pattern is associated with which argument each run.

Vavyorki by Ludum34 2015-12-19T17:54:00

Cute. A little too easy though-- it seems like I hardly ever have to use the short jump. It basically just goes long jump until they're a bit apart then short jump until i either cant move or they're back together again.

Make the danger of them getting far apart more real and you've got somethin'.

Little Seeds of Evil by MrAmlice 2015-12-20T18:25:00

I played around witht he mechanics of this one with my son playing the lumberjack guy. Love the character design, the asymmetrical gameplay idea, everything about this. I wish I could give it a more proper go.

Fight Boý by ssodelta 2015-12-19T03:00:00

Nice! You got a lot of combos out of just two buttons, but I mostly just jump kicked non stop.

Midnight Rendezvous by squarebridges 2015-12-15T06:25:00

good concept and smart to make it short so it didn't spoil. would have liked more indication toward preferences and maybe a rotating cast.

POOM POOM TCHI by OctoStudio 2015-12-19T15:59:00

This concept is very cool-- you get the idea right away but the controls are another matter. I kinda actually wanted a really hand-holdy tutorial for this one. I mean the graphical representation of how to fire to the rhythm was pretty good but it took me a while to really get it.

Unfortunately I have no friends to play this one with so I had to try it with my 3 year old kid. Wish I could've given it a more proper go. I intend to try and get my fiance to play this one (and a backlog of others that are multiplayer) but who knows if I'll be able to find a moment to do it.

Either way, really cool concept.

Flowering Souls by Lullaby 2015-12-17T19:02:00

Very tranquil game, slow but easy to get into. The difficulty in the beginning was a little rough-- it seemed like it got easier as time went on and I couldnt find a way to not have to play through the tutorial over and over when I first started and was learning the mechanics. Maybe that's just me but I learned better by doing than reading.

Strong Like Orc by SpareWizard 2015-12-15T06:35:00

Smashing them boxes sure is satisfying.

GURU by TomenLuca 2015-12-18T14:49:00

This game is pretty great-- this and "No Hobo" are the funniest game I've played thus far but this one isnt laugh out loud funny, its a smarter kinda funny.

This may be splitting hairs because there definitely is a learning curve and a strategy to this game but sometimes I feel like the best strategy is simply to always counter if you can and meditate if you can't and none of the conditionals in the card descriptions are in your favor. This isn't to say that I never had a moment where I was torn between which card to choose because there were times where that happened but it felt rare. Maybe I was misunderstanding the main mechanics, I don't know. Either way, with some slight tweaking this game is nearly a finished product.

You are a Pro TomenLuca, congrats.

Dude On Fire by voca 2015-12-21T07:06:00

Like many have said, the art is beautiful but the execution is kinda flawed. Alot have said its just too short a time to react to incoming obstacles but I think you intended that based on the resolution this game starts in.

I think the real problem is that its hard to distinguish between the spikey stuff your supposed to avoid and the background. Like, the first three times I played I literally thought i just died from nothing. Mike the stuff your dodging a different color or shape or something and that'll make it alot better I think.

Tailwind by synthetic-entropy 2015-12-15T06:50:00

Good use of both themes. I liked the encouragement to choose a different route each time

Bad Pelicans by illraceyou 2015-12-17T02:53:00

fun little game. didn't realize what i needed to do at first but once i figured it out it was no problem. Good art, would have liked some sounds though

White Rose by Kenneth Ng 2015-12-17T08:09:00

Pros: Absolutely beautiful (the prettiest game I've seen yet) and felt good to punch ghosts.
Cons: Too short / not alot to it (I want to see more!)

Auxochrome by yuotta 2015-12-21T14:53:00

The art style here is great-- I love your use of color. When I read the description and saw the screen shots I was thinking this was going to be a fez clone. I'm glad it wasnt, bc it was pretty damn fun. The best strategies seem to be to jump either fire completely vertically to the chromophore fall on you, you just entirely side to side while moving toward the enemy. Honestly, there isnt much strategy here, and it takes a while to get going. I think the players base dmg needs to be higher (my forearm is actually sore from clicking so much, haha)

Additionally I did not exactly understand the upgrade system/when I was taking damage. It seemed like as long as I was being offensive I never died. I actually just stopped playing the first time thru just to see if I could die.

These things aside, I really enjoyed this one.

Epic ooze escape by speciesUnknown 2015-12-16T15:31:00

This was a neat little game and surprisingly fun. Kind of reminds me of a top down ascii version of risk of rain because you pit my natural desire to wanna collect loot against completing the level before getting overwhelmed. I thought for a moment that what would have put it over the edge innovation wise might be some unfolding mechanics (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptk93AyICH0)-- a shop where the ooze isnt there and I could buy things or some light narrative elements. Also potion drops or something to heal you early on might be nice. Good job!

Your games are fucking brilliant, all of them. I'm new but I remembered seeing you last time around too. Kudos again you overly talented mother fucker.

Seriously, do you work on larger projects? you must be working in the industry right?

Element Smash by midgard 2016-04-21T00:09:00

I like your sprites. It would be nice if the individual characters were more unique and you could change mid game

The Shinobi Trial by Foxtacy 2016-04-21T02:25:00

cool game! I wish it were a little more difficult. The blocks came from so far away and so slowly that I had ages to get ready to change form.

Goo Patrol by starpixie 2016-04-20T04:41:00

building an arsenal of weapons was fun. The controls were a little hard to get used to though.

Morphling by SecondDimension 2016-04-24T14:09:00

Very fun and challenging, well animated and good sounds-- ticks all the boxes as far as executions goes.

My only complaint is that ther are ALOT of moves/mechanics front loaded in the tutorial. This is fine for a LD where you know people are going to be playing your game in 5-20 minute stints.

Also, while originally I thought "well the sprite changes were just decoration for standard 2d platformer moves" but this was actually a really smart design decision because it allowed you to make something really solid and fun with conventional mechanics within the allotted time.

Good work (and congrats on the baby!)

Changelings by aeai 2016-04-21T20:02:00

Cool. A derivative of lemmings but still appropriate for the theme (woulda read better for the theme if the blobs actually had a sprite change)

needed more levels and a "speed up" power for once the puzzle is solved.

2D-Tris by Monofraps 2016-04-20T18:04:00

This game almost tells you like it is right up front (without quite differentiating itself title-wise from regular tetris which was also 2d..

but in all seriousness:

This took a minute for my mind to adjust to and to get a feel for the controls. It is ALOT harder than it looks, seeing someone speed run this would be amazing and nauseating.

OnPoint by purrpurr 2016-04-23T02:24:00

Very cool concept. Simple and clean. I would definitely play some more of this if there were a few more puzzles :)

Cherokid by EdoMiyamoto 2016-05-03T17:05:00

Great mood-- I was really wondering what the bird was gonna do the whole time.

Almost Robot by Dyn 2016-04-20T22:43:00

cool concept. I could see it being really fun with more enemies, obstacles, and robot parts.

Tremor by Troyan 2016-04-21T03:44:00

pretty good graphics and sound. Would be nice if the shape shifted objects acted differently :)

Changeling Infiltration Simulator by ProjectX593 2016-04-21T02:17:00

Cool concept. Some visible vision cones or radii would help with the dificulty

Shifty Shapes by dylanwolf 2016-04-24T12:41:00

and interesting take on a 'match X' type game-- taking away the ability to choose how far the block moves not only when moving down but in any direction is something I don't think I've seen yet. While initially the convenience of playing things like candy crush on tablets had spoiled me into thinking 'oh wow this is gonna be a pain in the ass", I got used to the mechanic pretty quick and it was really fun and challenging to race against the clock as more shapes began to fill in.

The only thing I could ask for was different 'hooray you're awesome' type sound effects to really get the dopamine pumping when I nail a 8 or 9 string combo.

Nice work, solid entry!

His Story. Shapeshifters. by Muciojad 2016-04-20T17:41:00

I like the idea... but it's a little on the nose.

Nice pixel art though!

Transformagician by HuvaaKoodia 2016-04-21T13:14:00

This game had a very original varnish of style over top of a really simple premise. It was pretty fun avoiding all the baddies-- my only qualm is that the transforming only rarely comes in handy.

Still, nice work!

Amorphous Space Widgets by hitchh1k3r 2016-04-20T23:39:00

This game is super clever. Awesome job! I love the way the square moves. I just wish the triangle was as interesting.

Amorphous Space Widgets by hitchh1k3r 2016-04-20T23:39:00

One of the most innovative I've seen so far. I think i hit a bug when I turned into the green ball. I it warped me back to the first room where i couldn't figure out how to get out (i might just be dumb :) )

Mike Rand in Fantasy Land by BrainSlugs83 2016-04-22T05:11:00

I found everything! This was pretty cool. It's awesome that you incorporated your friends. I'm sure they'll get a kick out of it.

The Amorphous Adventure of Blod by Croze 2016-04-20T04:24:00

The game could really benefit from some more varied combat. As it stands all you have to do is kite an enemy backwards while you shoot it. More options in combat would really make this shine.

The Wolf Hunt by Mak 2016-04-21T00:31:00

Very tough! Those wolves won't stop for anything!

Star Tribe by GrimGary 2016-04-20T04:54:00

the feel of huge space battles is really cool, but I found I could just park on top of the carriers and spin around firing in all directions and I'd be basically untouchable.

Doodle Book Survival by CarlsonAndPeeters 2016-04-20T05:11:00

love the art and animations! the game play it self is really simple, but the art really carries it.

Fast Dungeon by Andreas Brandt 2016-04-21T20:59:00

Great sprites, the platforming was kinda hard and the arc of the sword swing felt very limited though.

Operation SHIFT by SiM2SiM 2016-04-20T07:19:00

Very polished, makes great use of animations for firing and stuff that reminds me of nuclear throne. Enemy types are varied and interesting.

Anyone else have a constant strafing problem? I thought it was bc of my gamepad controller at first but after unplugging I still strafed right always. Even with this problem I enjoyed playing which speaks to how fun the game feels

My one criticism is that this seems kinda shoe-horned in to fit the theme of shape shifting.

Still, this is a very well executed game. Bravo.

glEscape() by abcdef65g 2016-04-22T05:40:00

I love the neon glow look. cool game.

Pitch Black by ReactorScram 2016-04-23T03:06:00

This was an interesting concept for a game. The light got stuck on red for me after my first race.

Space Junk by Wekaj 2016-04-20T04:04:00

This is the most fun I've had yet

I love the concept-- a great twist on a game like tetris (where you make use of space) and arcade style games where you are just trying to survive. The money and timer was a nice touch.

My only suggestion; the single blocks are clearly tactically superior yet they cost the least. I get th You should flip this. Unless I'm really misunderstanding something, the 25$ pieces are 100% the way to go. UNLESS the pay off you get when the timer ticks down is a multiplier of the more complex pieces. Maybe I'm missing something but my best runs were a few big blocks in the middle and then pretty much all single blocks.

Sub Dragon by deepnight 2016-05-09T13:37:00

Awesome.

Very well executed without being too high concept. Thats the nice thing about video games being associated with a style of 8 or 16 bit art-- all the early games needed to have recognizable characters with such a limited resolution... so you can tell me "ok you're a snake whose red side shoots lasers and whose white side absorbs rockets and bullets" and I'll be like "yeah, ok lets do this."

Nice tutorial too.

Very very well executed from conception to implementation.

EbaTank by plaguespark 2016-04-21T04:17:00

Really dig the graphics! It was incredibly short though and I guess I didn't really see the connection to the theme.

Astro Zoids by pkenney 2016-04-23T02:37:00

Simple but really fun. You should explore this more!

Map Shifter by woodenrabbit 2016-04-21T00:38:00

The music reminds me of an old game boy game for some reason : ) the black enemies are a little tough to see!

RETRO MIAMI BEAT by giordanno92 2016-04-21T03:21:00

Pretty impressive for only a day and a half's work. I really like the minimalist art style.

Shape Assault by thomz12 2016-04-21T18:34:00

The perfect example of how focusing on the mechanics rather than heavily on art assets can create a very honed and super fun game. SUPER fun.

My only complaint: I wish left click bullets did damage and stole powers and right click bullets just did damage and healed.

Or something like that.

I would just like the ability to make the choice of what powers i'm getting so there was more meaningful choices-- which is hard in a platformer meets shmup.

Paperchase by DragonXVI 2016-04-22T00:19:00

-This game would be lovely with a controller

- LOVE the meta-humor and how self aware it is (genuinely laughed when I read "or you could just use the parachute I guess)

- Very smart thematic choices with your character design

I could point out how hard the paper air plane is to use as a con but I assume you're already aware of this as you referenced it directly in the game, haha.

Nice work!

The character sprite is great. A little background music never hurts :)

Spirit of the Ancients by Orion Dev 2016-04-23T03:44:00

Yeah, really atmospheric. I would love to take a look at a post jam version.

Shapes Outdoor by leffe108 2016-04-20T17:54:00

Innovative, but I suspect you'll have trouble getting people to try it here. I'd love to see the concept become more fleshed out.

Robot Escape by rjhelms 2016-04-23T02:55:00

This was fun. The movement being relative to the direction you were facing really messed me up though. It also seemed pretty easy. I don't even know if any of the enemies were fighting back before I lasered them to death

Duality by HolyBlackCat 2016-04-20T15:16:00

This concept is absolutely excellent. I will give you 5 dollars right now to kickstart, more to come with promises.

seriously though I love this concept and would love to see a whole game of this. great mood and graphical decisions here too (love the light and dark aspect.)

Peaceful relaxing and fun to play to boot.

wish there was more here but thats a good thing more than a bad thing

Skywind Temple by Ogniok 2016-04-21T20:45:00

Daaang this is some pro lookin' stuff. The movement as the bird needs to be a little less sensitive though, I was getting a little sick at times.

I wish I could rate this more acurately but I only have one controller right now (I actually left the other 3 with my brother while playing ultimate chicken horse and Enter the Gungeon in between LD coding)

Pixel Pets by uheartbeast 2016-04-22T00:33:00

Something tells me you've been playing alot of stardew valley and feeding your still living tamagotchi from 4th grade up to LD35.

All jokes aside this is pretty damn good and very intuitive. I'm wondering how many different forms the pet can take? I played thru twice so I'm just curious.

Scrapmetalship by Four Quarters 2016-04-21T03:29:00

Love the music and love the concept. With a few tweaks this would be really great. As others have said, there is too much down time while flying through space.

The Cursed Forest by Gametery 2016-04-21T21:09:00

Looks great, cool concept. I love how you have the open level order philosophy of an older game like mega man or the original legend of zelda

Medusa Massacre by Cliff Lee CL 2016-04-23T02:38:00

Very cool concept. I thought it was really clever.

EnergyShift by Miziziziz 2016-04-21T04:04:00

" So in utter defiance of the theme I made a game about shifting energy instead of dull matter. "

Energy and matter are actually kinda the same thing so technically you're fine ;)

Serious talk: This game is very pretty. As pretty as something can be while bordering juuuuust on the right side of too many neon lights (and I love neon lights).

However, it requires a lot of precision and starts off with a very unconventional movement premise. It really could have used even the most bare base version of a tutorial beyond letting people know the controls.

Also the zen-like posture of the heroine can be a real juxtaposition to the frustration I felt trying to make it past some of these very challenging rooms.

Still, solid work my friend.

Sheep Shift by A-Flat Miner Studios 2016-04-21T04:10:00

Now I know what a sheep dog feels like: entirely compelled to create order among these little white blobs of disorder.

I know it doesn't really fit the theme but I love the play on words so much that I'm not docking you any points.

Nice work, very charming

Sheep Shift by A-Flat Miner Studios 2016-04-21T04:10:00

Great puns and fantastic graphics!

Mine Shift by Aumni 2016-04-21T04:03:00

Subpar Silly Shifty Shapes by namrog84 2016-04-22T05:15:00

Morpher---QWERTY, AZERTY and Devorak compatible by Aree Vanier 2016-04-20T23:26:00

Cool entry. Just wish it moved a little faster.

Theseus by TheMeorch 2016-04-20T05:11:00

This is fucking excellent. A great and simple puzzler with the philosophy of something like the witness: you really locked into a core mechanic and fully explored it. Well done.

I havent beaten it yet but I plan to because I actually feel super clever when I beat each puzzle.

Great job.

Nuit Blanche by MatLab 2016-04-21T13:52:00

I love your will to be weird. I was unable to reach the red door but I assume it just takes the patience to wait for all the shapes to align so you can 3d platform your way over there.

I tried this several times, but the scrolling textures on the shapes really fuck with your depth perception, haha.

//SHIFT/haxe by juxipolo 2016-04-20T03:49:00

I love how you really stuck to the theme here-- everything reinforces that command prompt/asteroids feel. Sorta like mega man meets asteroids. Maybe worth exploring more. Just wish it was a little harder when the large bodies of shapes (who I'm assuming are supposed to be like bosses) show up. In fact, the individual baddies are harder. Also really dig the almost bon-fire like system you have for shifting into other shapes. However, I wish controller support was better because even though I had the ability to equip new shapes it was difficult to switch between them using anything other than right click.

Still, solid entry-- maybe worth exploring further.

VHS WARS by goodbadokay 2016-04-21T21:04:00

I like this game stylistically; the screen blur as a health bar was a nice touch.

it pays respect to the theme, but I've seen alot of games with this concept during the jam. Yours is one of the better executed ones (even if it is a little derivative of geometry wars.)

Nice work!

Debrief by machine_screen 2016-04-20T15:45:00

Alot of ppl hate dialogue trees (probably largely because of their use in triple A games) but by all means if you can make one interesting go for it.

This was interesting and doing the debriefings was engaging. Not sure where you go with the concept from here though and not just become a single player cloud atlas or other interview based FMV game

Still, way to be weird
(non-sarcastic thumbs up)

It's Hard Out There for a Reverse Werewolf by dwemthy 2016-04-20T05:21:00

Clever title, strange game. Why am I running from wolves naked and stoning gypsy to death? I mean I'm tempted to say "it's just a game" but I hate that phrase. It does evoke a sort of lost and alone sensation. Everything wants to kill me or is ambivalent to me as a feral child. Maybe this is why I lash out stoning gypsies to death.

Kudos on showing the approximation of a dong. Rust is really opened up the flood gates-- we're breaking down walls here people.

All that aside, it was short but fun and certainly strange. I liked it.

Saving Steve by Exolun 2016-04-22T05:22:00

good concept for a game. Felt like it all came down to trial and error a bit though.

FriendShift Madness by vini60 2016-04-28T14:19:00

Really cool concept/twist on the theme without seeming like it was really reaching.

I dunno if you intended it but I love that you made what is essentially a game about matching patterns into something whose mechanics remind us of something profound about the human condition-- we do sort of die on the vine without other people, or go crazy. Calling the life bar a sanity meter and having you progressively get more disheveled would have been a nice touch but I can't complain. Seriously, simple as hell but Bravo!

Awesome that you included VA in the game! That was something we thought about getting in for our game, but just didn't have the time. The game itself looks good and is pretty fun. One thing I would suggest is tightening up the jumping and momentum as right now it is VERY floaty. Feels like I'm jumping on the moon!

Run Rainbow Run by djosef 2016-04-23T03:24:00

Wow the graphics are so pretty. It makes me smile.

Trionic by djfariel 2016-04-21T01:00:00

Love that tail. Good game. I couldnt get through that door though :( I thought i found the switch but it just wouldn't open. Maybe i missed another one

Planet-0 by Dreschler 2016-04-23T03:40:00

Cool game. Seems like a pretty complete experience too. I found a bug where if I leave the first room as the alien instead of the guard it will move to the next screen but my character won't be there so it soft locks the game.

SUBJECT 26 by MSiddeek 2016-05-06T14:26:00

Awesome. Alot like what I originally envisioned ours to be like..

Shift and Run by Sota 2016-04-20T14:58:00

The weird seemingly unfinished way you move in this game actually makes it really interesting to play-- almost like gang beasts but in a different way.

Siofra by QuestionableQuality 2016-04-21T14:08:00

Wow. This takes the cake for the mood category.

I'm not in the business of saying what is or isn't a game but lets call this one an 'experience'-- a short but engaging one

It also scared the shit out of my 2 year old daughter, haha

Cybotrans by 2011petia 2016-04-20T23:31:00

The graphics were really good, but sometimes it was difficult to tell what I could jump on and what was just in the background.

Social Engineering - Level: Shapeshift by corupta 2016-04-21T02:16:00

Cool little game here. I really liked all the dialogue. Some more significant variation in the look of the different people would help me recognize who I was talking to and who I needed to turn into more easily. That may be just because I'm more of a visual thinker, but keeping everyone's names in my head was a challenge.

Fishy Fishy by littlelinc 2016-04-20T04:27:00

oh wow that was short! I wish it would have been longer if only to keep listening to the music. Having some kind of ability progression associated with the different fish would be cool too!

The Great Leap by Louspirit 2016-04-20T18:50:00

Good entry! First person platforming like this is always difficult without having a sense of where your feet are.

Shape Blaster by RenegadeGamez 2016-04-21T00:35:00

Looks nice. I was able to cheese it a bit by spamming shoot and change at the same time :P

Space Shifter by superjai 2016-04-20T07:01:00

Nothing ground breaking here, but this is a solid top down space shooter. Its actually nice to hardly have to aim so I can focus on dodging-- I just wish the enemies would output a liiiitle more damage. Even at their worst it feels too light for a bullet hell. Maybe thats what you were going for, I dunno.

The UI was practical and the progression was solid and fun. Reminds me a tiny bit of a great game called enemy mind where you can swap ships with any enemy ship.

JaJa's Bizarre Transformer by reckhou 2016-05-09T13:51:00

This game is just stupid silly fun and I like it alot. Very smart to include arcade, rogue-like, and hardcore mode to add some depth to the game.

Revamp by tayl1r 2016-05-09T13:28:00

The controls make this very hard. I'd be way into it if it had some controller support. Love the pixel art and the choice of colors you used.

RobotJet by janiq 2016-04-20T23:33:00

Interesting concept. I agree with @MightyToastStudio. Some short levels would feel nice

Who by Reallysketchy 2016-04-20T05:01:00

Cool concept, however, very hard to keep track and get the rules and mechanics down. A tutorial would be really nice. However, conceptually this has really inspired me.

Dovetail by jofra 2016-04-20T07:08:00

Firstly, great use of color and randomness. It looks beautiful for something so simple.

I found myself playing this with a controller in one hand (using stick) and they keyboard in the other to grow or shrink. I still found it very very difficult for two reasons: 1, the controls are a little over responsive for my taste and 2, not only walls but collisions within tunnels cause a death state.

I found myself just being as skinny as I could because its so hard to begin with. Better controller support and an input sensitivity would help this.

Eggplant’s Dynamic Chimerization by DAT.NOT.MY.GAME! 2016-04-21T22:35:00

Looks nice and makes me happy. I had no idea whats going on here though honestly, its a hot bunch of nonsense.

The Alchemist Oblivion by nlbi21 2016-04-24T13:00:00

Cool concept-- the borther's style controlling two characters thing combined with MOBA style cool downs for summons. I liked that you included a light narrative element too.

Notes:
-I'm sure this was just a time thing, but the differences between the firing rates/DPS of elemental character were not enough to make switching super strategic. I played alot of the wind character ebcause he seemed to the be fastest with move speed and if his ranged attack did less damage than the others the difference was negligible.

- alchemist sprite didnt load with web version in internet explorer :(

these issues aside, this was conceptually a very cool entry-- keep up the good work, friend!

Trial 21 by mooncalf 2016-04-20T04:51:00

Haha, you really nailed the way a frog jumps.

The aesthetic was a little mismatched and strange-- a robot on what looks like a world made of plush carpet. Also, you don't really ever shape shift so much as you posture shift but thats... kinda nit picky, I know.

However, this game FEELS great to play and that counts for alot.

In Wolf's Hide by applejam 2016-04-20T18:20:00

Great look! I did find that it got a little monotonous pretty quickly after I figured out the best way to get get the ingredients.

Biological Warfare by Patomkin 2016-04-23T18:07:00

This and Windowframe are top 2 for me, still deciding

Nice work man just perfect for the theme.

Biological Warfare by Patomkin 2016-04-23T18:10:00

Also, alot of ppl tried to do something like this but you really nailed it in the execution-- making the walls morph in shape too was a great touch

PacShifter by jcmonkey 2016-04-21T04:29:00

I cannot get past level 5 :( The difficulty really ramped up there quick.

I mean, yeah, its clearly derivative of pac man but thats okay because you were trying to hit it from another angle. However, I think the use of screen wrap would have gone far in a puzzle game. Of all the original Pac man mechanics I think that one would have lent the most to a puzzle game like this.

LabSwap by Mr.Chippy 2016-04-21T01:44:00

Very cool Idea. I lover how you force us to shift. Could use some balancing though

Goddamn Server by Nordic Ninja 2016-04-21T00:51:00

Tough! :) some sounds would really help bring this together

Aqualution by DevDad 2016-04-20T17:38:00

The game is relaxing to play-- if the baddy fish were a little more dangerous i'd liek it a little more

but its cool-- good balance of danger and discovery, a system of progression.

Note: I did get stuck in the lvl up screen after I got ate from behind by one of those big red guys.

Okay, the kinks should be mostly ironed out. Get back to us if you find any more but it should be mostly okay.

Escape from the Dungeon of Snor by Weeping Rupee 2016-04-25T12:51:00

@ kiesenverseist

thanks for the tip-- actually we used this technique for the tabbed out view (which was originally the only view in the game)

we added a 'zoomed in' view very last minute and decided it looked nicer with the high sprite resolution of some of our artists work. Suddenly, this became the default view because we liked it so much and we simply drew the text to the player object because we knew he would be in the center of the view and at the time we were struggling just to get the game working and figuring out the puzzles-- finding where the actual zoomed in view's center was wasn't a super big priority during crunch time.

Still it would have been nice, eh? Thanks for playing!

Escape from the Dungeon of Snor by Weeping Rupee 2016-04-27T15:22:00

@pixelpotions you need to be human to use doors.

@ rjhelms

"My only criticism is that having to react quickly to the bullet at the end felt a bit 'cheap' "

Then we've done our job as character designers-- Snor is an asshole :)

Wild Run by Skaz 2016-04-21T23:56:00

wouldn't start from title screen so I ran it from game maker with the source file.

Nice looking game, I'm surprised no one else has come up with this concept since in LD34 I saw SOOOO many endless runners. I was glad this was not procedurally/semi-randomly generated and that you took the time to craft levels for the forms.

Nice work!

Spaghetti Slayer by Cole and Jordan Studios 2016-04-21T00:28:00

The Lab by MayMakeGame 2016-04-21T01:28:00

God use of audio cues. Tough though!

Druid Trials by Thanquiol 2016-04-20T04:21:00

I had a few glitches at the bird totem as well.

We had an idea similar to this-- a platformer where the physical properties of what you're turning into determine the way in which you puzzle through these levels. Interesting to see where it could have gone.

Nice work, way to stick to the theme and build a light narrative for it.

A Sum Of All Parts by MattWoelk 2016-04-21T01:42:00

Not sure if i'm supposed to be able to move :( i can only look around and can't trigger anymore sounds. Are there some controls i don't know about?

SEMILUCID by curtamyth 2016-04-21T01:55:00

Interesting take on the pac-man thing. I like the look

Doppel City by Green Soda 2016-04-22T05:50:00

Cool game, like a polygonal hidden in plain sight game. Looks really nice. The one problem I had was when you get toward double digit levels there are so many people and dogs that everything is blinking around trying to find a place where it can fit and not be colliding with something else so it just looks like everything is changing shape.

Operation Dysmorphia by hpearson2 2016-04-20T15:37:00

Was unable to play/controls seemed to do nothing?

VampShift: The Bloodening by abaines 2016-04-20T17:44:00

Boy, I'm a sucker for difficult platforming games. This one was fun and had good style too! The only thing I would suggest is making the fly button the same as the transform button.

AAA Wars by alexlemming 2016-04-21T03:51:00

Looks great! wish i could shoot the opposite of my move speed though

Shifty Thing by Wahooney 2016-04-20T05:19:00

whew that was pretty difficult. I kept trying again and again though :)

Shifter by sP0CkEr2 2016-04-21T03:58:00

That robot is adorable. great sfx. Could pick up the pace a bit faster

Shipshift Pronto by KhaoTom 2016-04-20T04:41:00

Very innovative concept where your weapons themselves are your health and they become disarmed one by one. way to think outside the box! On top of that the shifting into acrobatic like shapes that affect firing patterns was the icing on the cake.

my only criticisms: wish i didnt have to re watch the tutorial when I died. At first it gave me time to check out my postures. After a while this made doing several runs kind of annoying.

Still, a solid entry. With some careful balancing and a more lively art style this thing could go places. Also, maybe even consider a two player mode where you both dynamically control the posturing and two guns/hearts each.

Nice, man ( or lady )

Relec Hunter by geekguy100 2016-04-23T03:13:00

MetaShift by kiesenverseist 2016-04-21T02:12:00

Fun game. Needs some music and progression could be a bit faster but i stuck with it! :)

Exhuman by Arvydas 2016-04-20T05:35:00

I love the look of this game! Really difficult as well. Maybe I'm missing something, but I found it pretty hard to gather 25 scrap to get into one chest.

Logan's Quest by Joshsimard 2016-04-21T01:39:00

Nice entry. A little unsatisfying when you have to back track to get coins though.

Bloodbearer by emielboven 2016-04-21T03:51:00

I like the look, and it feels good except that my sword swing radius seems like its too much. Alls I have to do is back up and wait until enemies get almost close enough to touch me and swing swing swing. I mean I know its alot to ask for something that looks so nice and was made in such a short time frame but I just wish there was more strategy to fighting. It feels fun, no doubt, but I'm not making any choices.

Also, I beat the werewolf on the first try because he got stuck on one of those green fire lanterns. I did get to watch him do some neat animations though.

Kudos!

This game is a mad man's dream.

I have two kids myself and I wonder what crazy sprites they'd come up with...

Nice work!

Ghostroast by zinexo 2016-04-21T04:37:00

The tiger is clearly OP-- just run and get the coins as the tiger until you're overwhelmed with ghosts and then shoot those mofo's to double death.

Also the down-slam blob thing made me genuinely laugh when I saw it.

It was fun, I enjoyed the random elements but this game was made for a controller not a keyboard :(

ScapeShift by ClockwerkClover 2016-04-21T01:57:00

Count Spoopy's dance club by MrBoxBox 2016-04-21T02:26:00

Cool text adventure. I'm into the enigmatic style. Glad you decided to submit.

Aftertile by LOSTALLOY 2016-04-20T03:35:00

Pro: Everyone's said it: cute. Great use of color scheme and negative space. I was genuinely surprised when i squeezed thru a wall for the first time.

Con: Easy-- I spent 90% of my time in the walls. This seems to be the obvious choice for safely navigating this space and it got a little boring.

Aftertile by LOSTALLOY 2016-04-20T23:28:00

I enjoyed the music!

Agent Shift by jollyserpent 2016-04-21T13:34:00

This is VERY original while still using old conventions from things like Clue, where in the world is Carmen Sandiego, and even has slight hints of that kind of social commentary aspect more modern things like Papers Please use so effectively to make thier world engaging.

This is the best use of familiar conventions to make something totally original I've seen yet. Aot of people really have been stretching the definition of "shapeshift" but you managed to actually use the theme in a totally novel way without being cheaty about it.

Not to mention you actually did a tutorial! This game really needed one so thanks for that.

Definitely worth exploring and developing further.

My only note:
-I was surprised tho when spreading rumors about shifters raised by detection score, thought that would throw them off the scent.

Ape-Evo by Roland M 2016-04-21T01:32:00

Very tough, but love the art. tune down the difficulty, add some controller support and some music and i'd definitely play this

This game was wonderful
A modern take on the "just avoid hazard" type games (pac mac man, pit fall, etc..)

God the art style is my favorite too.

if the theme was light and dark it woulda fit alot better though, it really is reaching with the title

Pluto's Tears by kestrelgames 2016-04-21T04:21:00

When I first tried this game I hated the controls. Then I really got the hang of it and it became quite addictive.

The idea here is great-- what with pluto not being a planet anymore (actually I heard they might change thier mind on that again) but this really would have fit best with the 'grow' theme in LD34 than the shape-shift theme.

Still this was alot of fun and very outside the box thinking.

I like the VA. This is a nice shooter you made.

Beneath a killing moon by Holtenice 2016-04-20T07:26:00

This game has absolutely my favorite art design yet. Kudos to whoever did that. The architecture of those buildings with the moody music and this really strange idea for a game really was a worth-while if short experience. It kinda seems though that this would have fit better in the "the light hurts you" theme that got voted out final round. Still, wow. I wanna be in this world you made, and cant wait to see the next/first big one you create. I think your strength is in creating this magical uncanny looking universe-- maybe try a game about exploration and light puzzle solving one day (ala Hohokum)

Suggestion: Im pretty sure this runs on a timer and I think it would be more strategic if it worked on a number of moves and gave you that information up front.

NeonDX by neondx 2016-04-20T18:26:00

What a great concept!

NeoTrap by omarhuseynov011 2016-05-05T04:17:00

Nothing groundbreaking... but a nice solid game-- actually I experienced a little cognitive dissonance here: I find the music and aesthetic relaxing and yet as the game gets more difficult the anxiety of anticipating those spikes is really at odds with the look and feel of the game.

LD37 — One room

Oscar's chamber of darkness by nilead 2016-12-16T03:05:00

Pros:
-I liked the puzzles: particularly the water one, I got stuck on it quite a few times. Made me feel smart when I got it though.

-The stress/fear/worry meter in a puzzle game is something I havent seen to my knowledge

-Im sure you'll get this alot but the mood and art style are perfect.

Cons:
-The geometry could be a bit jerky-- I got stuck in between the stairs and the void in the second room

Notes:
-At times I didnt understand why what I was doing was causing certain things to do (ex: the stairs)-- based on the very artsy vibe from the game and the whole lost child thing I didnt know if this was intentionally there to cause some kind of cognitive dissonance.

-Try restarting the player from most recently completed puzzle-- in a puzzle game with very certain solutions once you figure out how t o do something it just becomes tedious to do it over.

Great job though, I really liked the world of this game.

Domain by dobnarr 2016-12-16T22:20:00

Wow, where do I start? I think this is one of the more unique entries I've played yet.

Pros:
It is very high concept and I love how the conceptualized race for space in an overpopulated world played into the one room theme.

Game play wise this is an interesting and experimental mechanic I haven't seen anywhere else.

The atmosphere was great and the use of minimalist graphics actually plays into the whole "you are just a face in a crowd, a 1 or a 0" aesthetic of play.

The narrative stuff between levels is great-- and the central conceit here (that a detachment from the normal human condition occured because of this new way of reproducing) is absurd in a wonderful way. Maybe I'm reading too much into this but I think it kind of implies that the act of sex keeps a modern society in tact which is great.

Cons:

Its more interesting and artistic than it is fun at the moment.

Suggestions: I know this would be alot harder to manage but I would love to see non quadrilateral based shaped (hexagons, pentagons, etc..)

Black Hole Research by menip 2016-12-17T00:28:00

Good first entry!

Pros:
-Its simple and easy to get the hang of right off the bat.
-The inclusion of a tutorial was nice; something we don't see often enough in the slap-dash prototyping of Ludum Dares

Cons:
-It isnt always clear the difference between what my left and right click is going to do. I get that one effects the rotation and the other direction, right? However in play its hard to tell at times whether I should fire at one that's close to me because I'm unsure of how this will change the movement exactly.

-The background debris is kind of a distraction as they stand out more than the black holes do

Suggestions:
Since we're on a circular treadmill anyway why not make the player slowly spiral inwards towards that sun in the middle. This way the game could have an end state rather than just be about racking up more points and infinitely surviving. Plus I think it would make survival alot harder as the game went on.

Overall: nice job for your first entry, keep it up :)

PS: I noticed you mentioned the Itch.io link on my game was not working. It's fixed now if you wanna check it out :)

Hamsterical Nuts by mirta000 2016-12-25T02:29:00

Pros:
-The animation on the hamster, especially when he's firing from the side, is excellent

-Good pacing (it really picks up around level 4) and perfect/smart length of play time for a game jam when many people will be only getting the surface level of your game

-Intuitive easy controls

Cons:
-It could use more of a variety of firing patterns from the robot baddies-- maybe just change the color of the same sprite and make one that also fires at diagonal directions?

-It wasn't obvious until level 5 whether the spawners were actually responsible for the enemies spawning or whether they were simply something I had to destroy to beat the level

Suggestions:
Maybe have an autofire for the player or a mechanic where the longer you hold down the fire button the faster/slower your projectiles get created. The former, in conjunction with maybe adding regenerating health on the spawners could make things a bit more interesting.

Also an animation that cues the player in to which spawner is spawning which enemy type would be helpful.

Thanks for playing mine and it is a joy to play yours as well :)

Mechaxolotl Rampage by TeamAxolotl 2016-12-15T23:28:00

This is one of the most fully realized games I've seen so far this LD. Excellent work; especially to your artist. The whole concept is just so great-- I actually wish it was two player so I could play it with my kid (Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is a little to complex for him but this is beautifully straightforward). The title, how you used the theme, the actual gameplay all super fun.

I have no notes except that I wish there was some kind of end state or progression in the background. The other invading mechs are a great touch but I wish we were maybe getting closer and closer to like a Pentagon or White House or something.

I also thought you could maybe do some cool stuff with the water level affecting exactly what weapons you had access to (maybe you cant get above where the water level is)

These are just minor nit picks though, GREAT game.

The Rocket Man by Dev Dennis 2016-12-19T02:32:00

This made me smile.
For what it is it is perfect pretty much...

I love the character model on the AI
As someone whose game was also primarily about the interaction between one man on a lonely spaceship and his ship's AI I am jealous that your robot was so damn cool looking.

My only suggestion would be to ass emoticon-ish facial expressions for the little robot.

Nice work!

Strexter by Ryusui 2016-12-28T16:36:00

This is such a simple concept yet surprisingly fun. I did much better once I realized that the fire blocks (or whatever they are) werent gonna kill me but just would slow me down. Until then I was scared as hell of them. By the by it took me 4 tries to beat.

Pros:
-Elegantly simple without being boring
- Good length for judging purposes; just enough to be challenging w/o overstaying its welcome. Many games during ludum dare I find myself commenting "needs checkpoints!" but this one doesnt its fine just like it is if this is an example of, like, a level

Cons:
-Unless you add power ups of enemies or something (which im unsure would benefit this concept) alof of it becomes about memorization of the optimal path

Suggestions:
Maybe a button that lets you speed up (a dash?) but has some drawback like if you touch a wall you get stunned. I'm unsure of this though. I do know this tho: if you decide to persue this idea further you need something to either make it less about memorizing the opitmal path OR embrace that that games about the optimal path an add risk/reward mechanics (like the dash) for speed runner types.

Great job!

Strexter by Ryusui 2016-12-28T16:37:00

Also, thank you for allowing me to use WASD and the arrows because after my third try using WASD my forearm muscles wer burnin'-- I thought: man I wish I could use my other hand and then was delighted to find the arrow keys worked too :)

Callisto by zenmumbler 2016-12-16T23:32:00

Loved it. Reminds me of the Witness a bit and coming from me that's a great compliment (Jonathan blow is my idol as a designer)

Pros:
-Perfect length and puzzle difficulty for a game jam judging

-Beautiful aesthetic and mood

-The use of symbols was a great choice-- I could speak any language ans still play this game

-The symbols themselves were designed well: specific enough to not require a Fez like alphabet cube to reference and yet simple enough that I could not have confused the direction symbols for the referential ones

- Made me feel smart :)

Cons:

-I wish there was more or a variation on what I'd learned as a final puzzle to get the door to open.

Excellent work.

Tempus Machina by Pickens Inc. 2016-12-15T17:31:00

So... I liked it. Yours was the first game I played because I saw it while submitting my own for review (smart plug, I felt very obliged)

Anyway, the concept was in line with the theme, the gameplay was fun (although I always prefer WASD to arrows for movement personally)

However, I never really felt overwhelmed. I wish you had gone in more of a SuperCrateBox direction and slowly ramped up the number of enemies in both the future and past rooms. Although I honestly expected to see alot of time travel/parallel universe concepts this Ludum Dare I didn't consider the idea of a horde mode where you could choose to allow enemies to amass in one room and then maybe be forced to go back there at some point. That was the the idea this game was pointing to in my opinion: keep two states of this room free of enemies.

Ramp up the difficulty a little faster and I think you're onto something here.

Panic room by Smiley 2016-12-17T21:07:00

Pros:
-I like the sprites on the enemies
-Its fun to play -- especially once you figure out the best strategy which seems to be to take out the mummies first since they're only one hit kills and seem just as likely to drop a power up as any of the baddies with more hp. Once you get one of the better power ups (flame thrower, etc..) focus down the suits and the fatties.

Cons:
- Collision hitbox on the bad guys seems awfully liberal
- Wish it had an ending or win-state

Solid game though!

Finding Home by abezuska 2016-12-16T21:45:00

Charming!

Also I learned something today: a wombat looks more like a tiny bear or ground hog than it does a bat.

Seriously though I played this with my 2 year old and she absolutely loved it so thanks for that.

Great use of the theme-- maybe put some collision detection on the animals?

Walkie Talkie by managore 2016-12-17T01:49:00

This is absolutely amazing.

It might be one of the best games I've ever played. With all the level editors / share your level clones coming out since Mario Maker (BoxMaker etc..) its astounding you made one of the most accessible, lively, community inspiring, innovative share/make level games out there in just... what 48 hours? 72? Doesn't matter. You are brilliant my friend.

Super Battle Cycle by PowerSpark 2016-12-28T17:07:00

This game was alot of fun, but MAN does it throw mechanics at you fast

Pros:
-The grappling hook mechanic. In my opinion thats what his game should be focused on because its very fun and satisfying to kill someone with a box thats dragging behind you for some reason.

-Each level presents a unique challenge and a new mechanic

-Fun!

Cons:
-There is too much going on here: like I said I think the grappling hook mechanic is what this games about.

-I dont necessarily see what this has to do with the theme. I think if you coulda subverted this by having all the rooms be the same shape and simply rearranging the obstacles and stuff in them like alot of other games are doing to get around the limitation of the "One Room" theme.

Suggestions: You can probably cut out level one entirely, and focus more on the grappling hook mechanic. I think the gun is fine, the locks and keys are fine, but the turbo mechanic and most of the rest are a little much.

Overall though, excellent job.

Dreadroom by nassi 2016-12-15T20:08:00

Okay so I made it to level 4-- it is a very challenging (but fair) game.

Pros: Nice Aesthetic with the kid and the whole Child in Peril thing.

The shadow monster things really are terrifying. I mean CHRIST they move two spaces at a time.

Love that the best strategy (for me at least) seems to be to build a fort around you with furniture. Something I woulda totally done as a kid in a dark scary room.

Cons:
-Controls are not very intuitive at first. Its easy to make a mistake so you have to really think through every step and make sure your making the right thing (kid or tiles)

-The games can be so long and methodical that I often forget the strategy I learned at the beginning of a level to isolate myself

Suggestions:
- Add some creepy music
- maybe a power up that could reverse a move?

Question: Do you watch Extra Credits and is one of the stuffed animals on the kids floor their "Game" mascot?

Nice work, solid game.

Dreadroom by nassi 2016-12-15T20:10:00

Sorry Forgot to rate and its not letting me do that apparently without leaving a second comment, haha.

Gogol by BeardyBard 2016-12-17T00:10:00

Neat-- very Vlambeer-ish (specifically Super Crate Box)

Also, afforded me a tangential learning opportunity because I was interested to know what Viy was.

Pros:
-Wonderful sprites

-Very Fun once you figure out you should just be auto firing all the time

-I dunno why but I love that the main character looks like someone out of west side story... or maybe the fonze. This, along side with the demonic enemies and the boss AND the cute pixel-y art style make me feel like this was a level out of a game where the main character is a "cool atheist". I actually thought maybe thats what you were going for until I read the description

Cons:

-Jumping feels a little too float-y or uneven with the distance the platforms are placed at.

-Spear power ups seem under powered (for me at least) than original weapon-- specifically for dealing with the slime barnacles. Daggers felt overpowered.

-The slime goo projectiles that fly off the slimes are too hard to see/not telegraphed enough so I found myself not knowing what I was dying to until I noticed them like 4-5 tries in.

-Difficulty ramps up very quickly although I assume this was intentional but the jump is too sudden at one point (after the angel appears). Feels impossible to deal with without the daggers.

Square Roots by Weeping Rupee 2016-12-15T23:34:00

@ nassi -- Yeah the radar allows you to save a mineral you are currently using for later if you drop it there. This becomes especially useful in the later levels when the start conditions are a little bit ... well unfair. Haha. Thanks for the in-depth comment, I love when someone really gives good feedback.

Square Roots by Weeping Rupee 2016-12-16T11:27:00

@mooncalf -- Yeah one thing I wish I had gotten in was better fail state detection and and tutorializing the player-- for the post jam version I guess, right? Thanks for the feedback!

Square Roots by Weeping Rupee 2016-12-16T22:26:00

Yeah, sorry Itch.io link should work now :)

Square Roots by Weeping Rupee 2016-12-28T16:39:00

@Ryusul - yeah fail state detection is def the games weak point. I meant to put it in but I think that would require me to put a new link for a post-jam version and I've made so many little changes to thepost jam version that I didnt want to split my comments-- I wanna know exactly which version people are playing. I guess after judging is over maybe I'll put a blog post with a post-jam version.

Roomba Fight Club by JimmothySanchez 2016-12-28T16:49:00

Ha! Conceptually this is my favorite thing so far. I wish I'd gotten to play it 2 player.

Pros:
-Perfect concept for the One Room theme
-I love that you made the room so destructible. It highlights the absurdity of two Roombas with balloons battling each other-- not only is that funny but then also by the end the room looks like a hurricane came through.
-Fun as hell

Cons
-It feels a little uncertain as to who will win a head on collision

Suggestions:
If you had made a little ending where the roombas owners come in and see the destroyed house that'd be great.

Don't Stop Me by breno 2016-12-16T03:21:00

This game was fun! Those fuckers are hard to hit. I loved the silhouette style of the art too.

Pros:
-The movement on the enemies was interesting and looked very realistic

-It had an ending! And a good one at that. I was thinking it was gonna be one of those survive as long as you can things at first and I was pleasantly surprised when I took off

-Learning curve was not too steep

Cons:
-Movement on enemies is a bit unpredictable.

-The best strategy seems to be to stand by the panel upping the launch progress and shooting at the most horizontal angle possible to kill the first few incoming bots, if you manage to get 4 or 5 on thier way in (which I did on my third or 4th try) all you have to do is shut the windows and up the launcher while you wait out the storm. Its kinda cheaty but it worked for me.

Nicely done.

The One Room Experiment by Siegfried Croes 2016-12-17T20:35:00

Simple, elegant, fun!

Pros:
-Very smart use of your assets
-Like the retro art style
-Good way of subverting the One Room idea with the robot arm and the doors

Cons:
-Had some issues with lag, specifically while jumping
-enemies are hard to deal with in such a small space

Suggestions:
-Maybe, like in the original zelda, have a more pronounced wait period upon entering a room for when the enemies spawn

LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Mountain Diver by Ithildin 2017-12-06T03:08:14Z

Cons: The movement is a bit touchy. There should be some friction or else it just feels like you're always mid-jump even when you're on a platform. Maybe this is intentional to create an "ice" feel?

Pros: So far this is the most interesting mechanic I've seen, and it fits the theme very well. It's counter intuitive and plays on our psychology of wanting to "get all the things" Even after I knew what was going on (it took me a bit) I had to resist grabbing those crystals.

Great work.

XenoNanny by icxon 2017-12-08T23:31:26Z

Pretty neat little puzzle platformer ya got here

Pros: - I was engaged with the world (it was pretty and I liked exploring it) - The art and story stuff in the beginning was a nice touch - Good fundamentals of level design - Cute friendlies. I felt bad for killing them so much.

Cons: - I found many puzzles were able to be solved without my little guys - I feel like the more I have the better it is, actually (people have said the same about my game though so don't feel bad)

Nice work!

Holiday Parking Panic! by FormalCloud 2017-12-06T02:41:14Z

This game is very fun and well made.

Pros: -Genuinely silly in a way that makes me smile -Good controls (although I wish I had used an xbox controller) -Good level design (with the active streets on either side)

Cons: -Not sure how it fits the theme-- maybe the more presents you have more cars start actively chasing you?

Comments -The optimal strategy seems to be caution, while my main instinct was to ram stuff. Maybe work some more precision parking in there if your goal is to incentivise skill and caution (which it seems to be with the way the health meter and collision works)

-Is there a win state? I got 7 presents and I don't see anymore.

- Put just a row of snowmen somewhere, they are fun to hit.

Nice work (and thanks for playing mine)!

Behemoth by sidewalksleeper 2017-12-06T23:46:33Z

So there's alot to like here-- this is a very competently executed top down shooter. I really like the sprite work and the sounds and the music. The overheat mechanic sets it apart from classic TDS games a bit. My main critique is that this game plays REAL loose with the theme. Right on the page it says "the more enemies you have the worse it is" but I think you should have played up the overheat mechanic as the thing that fits the theme.

Suggestions: I did notice after a while that I was flashing red when I was about to overheat AND you did have a big whopping meter for it in the corner so good on ya. However, players are lazy and have tunnel vision; you have to smack them over the head with important info. Maybe a sound cue to indicate overheating if you get hot enough? Something that starts as a vague intermittent beep and grows to an alarm. That might get my dumb attention.

Another thing is I think the two main mechanics are kind of at odds: always wanting to shoot like in most TDS games but having to conserve or you'll overheat. It is a neat concept but I think it would be a bit more fun if the player could subvert this by killing this fast/efficiently enough. I think if you kill an enemy on screen within a certain time window they should ALWAYS drop something that bring the heat rating down.

Sorry if this sounds over-critical, I just think you have alot of talent and wanted to say something meaningful.

Overall: nice job!

Radioactive Rumble by weeping-rupee 2017-12-05T01:46:52Z

Go ahead, tell me its too hard.

Radioactive Rumble by weeping-rupee 2017-12-06T05:23:13Z

sorlok-- more arms is kinda awesome except you run outta stamina real fast. Its definitely easier with like 2-4 arms I think.

Radioactive Rumble by weeping-rupee 2017-12-07T02:14:58Z

@solluxx

Yeah I REALLY wanted multiple opponents and actual rounds (although I think the combo Cuphead style see-how-close-you-got game over screen is a good work around for not having real rounds)

I normally have a team of 4 artists/coders who do these with me but this time it was just me and my artist Jeff so it was a real crunch just to get this done.

Radioactive Rumble by weeping-rupee 2017-12-07T02:34:53Z

@pkenney

Oh shoot I DID actually know that, I just mixed the things up.

I assumed it wouldnt let me submit to compo bc its only 48 hours, no?

Anyway I just switched it over to jam, my bad. Thanks for the heads up I never woulda realized that.

Radioactive Rumble by weeping-rupee 2017-12-07T03:40:20Z

@pkenney this is super awesome-- the saddest part of LD is not actually getting to see most people (except my fiance and my 5 year old) play our game. Seriously, this is great :)

First thing I'm noticing is people must have vastly different quality keyboards as its crazy the difference in speed some people can press to get back up.

And yeah the strategy is to wait and take your opening and fight more "measured" as you said.

Actually you do a better job than most of this. The one other guy I saw play was just SLAMMIN the keyboard always runnin outta stamina.

Radioactive Rumble by weeping-rupee 2017-12-07T13:36:45Z

@ banan

good solid feedback-- and I mostly agree.

There is a randomness to a lot of his behaviors that makes some fights more interesting than others when really there should be more of a pseudo randomness to it where he switches his behaviors dynamically based on what you're doing. If i make a full game out of it this is the route I'd take but for the purposes of an LD I had to use true randomness in most cases.

Super Mailman by 0xDD 2017-12-07T23:16:43Z

I really love your twist on the theme with the medals that clutter up your screen. It's a great and almost satirical concept (although you missed a chance for some biting commentary by making them Steam achievement trophies rather than medals.)

My main suggestion is that when you die or restart a level the medals you've 'earned' by trial and error that round should disappear and only carry over to the next level once you succeed. This is a physics game and the physics are loose and floaty which is totally okay but since thats the case its a bit harsh to penalize me and block my field of view for experimenting around with the springs and such.

I did appreciate that the medals re-positioned themselves up restarting though.

This game is very much in the spirit of the theme and has a great tongue-in-cheek kinda feel to it, nice work.

Life's A Glitch by gamepopper 2017-12-08T00:23:48Z

I really really dig the look of this game-- exactly my taste in aesthetics. At first I did not understand what the boxes did exactly-- it took 10-12 deaths before I saw the text at the bottom explaining it.

Pros: - Works really well with the theme - Simple in an elegant sorta way - The look of those corruptions and the minimalist color choices you made. MMMM damn. - Great great music.

Cons: - I wish I could play with a controller (maybe this is an option but it was not stated outright) - Jumping down is hard with the controls as they are

Suggestions: - Some friction when on the ground would help walking and jumping have a different feel

Nice job!

Dangle Copter by pkenney 2017-12-06T23:31:13Z

This is an excellent entry:

The mechanic is sound and fun and fitting

The tutorialization and difficulty progression is top notch-- I love that you don't even need a certain amount of guys to move on it just challenges the player to see how many he can retain.

The level design is very well done (this sorta goes back to the progression thing) but its great-- a tight little 5-10 minute package is perfect for LD.

My only critique would be that I had an instance where I got 4 dudes on the safety launch pad thing but I only got credit for one since at the LAST second I slammed the rest into the ground, haha.

Also, if you wanted a suggestion-- I really liked in level 5 when you had to go down that long drop and thought "what would this game be like if my choppers, well.... chopped them up if they landed on top of me?

Just a thought.

GREAT JOB! My favorite so far :)

Famous Knight by Lucas Ferrantelli 2017-12-09T19:12:15Z

This is awesome-- I saw another game with a very similar concept this LD (called something like 'Best Cop Ever') but the execution of yours and how your fans interfere as you get more is far more fitting for the theme. Also, awesome sprite work.

"Chicken Fan" is the best skill ever.

The 'voice acting' on the King is great.

I don't really have many notes, nice work.

CalligraTree by Roaring Cat Games 2017-12-08T01:31:32Z

Love it. Absolutely love it. I feel like this tech could be used to generate some great procedural trees in a side scrolling mine-craft like (e.g. starbound)

Pros: - Beautiful simple eastern aesthetic - Relaxing - A goal that's not really demanding or stressful but just gives you some direction, so it doesnt just feel like a peice of art or a tech demo (although it is both those things but the "make your tree bigger" goal makes it more)

Cons: - Better for if the theme was "the more you have the more beautiful this tree looks"

- I feel like it would be even coolr if the earlier branches were more thick so that a tree could kinda split into two. It felt a little bit like I had more of a control over the fine detail, the tiny branches of the tree but not the trunk itself.

- I don't know if this is even really a con, but I wanted a way to compare my trees. Not to have points or know which tree was better but just to know how variable the parameters can get. I think this might be against the philosophy of a relaxing game like this though so take it with a grain of salt. That being said, I SO won the zen contest: calibra.png

Excellent work, top notch. Top 3 so far and definitely my favorite conceptually.

SUPER COP HERO by Finlal 2017-12-08T01:12:22Z

New favorite.

Pros:

- TOP NOTCH sprite work - Fun and addictive as hell - Funny (When the baddies blow themselves up its really great... also I spent the first 30 seconds killing civilians and being like ' what is this game?... Also I was unsure whether I should shoot the cameraman so I shot him every time. It felt bad but also good. ') - Inventive use of theme

Cons: - Its tough. This isnt inherently bad but I think maybe the ratio or FOV could be changed a bit-- My instinct when playing a skill based action game like this is to barrel through but the optimal strategy for me was to memorize where the baddies were coming from and reload between dudes. That way I could just DUMP bullets. I think it might work better if I could see them coring from further away and then memorization wouldnt be as key.

All in all this is magnificent. Great work.

Close Friends by skippuku 2017-12-07T01:24:52Z

This game fucking bizarre and I love it.

Seriously its somewhat surreal, genuinely funny (I literally laughed out loud when I lost "Ima kill you cuz you made me wait too long!"), and definitely stands out.

For real though I cannot overstate how interesting this game is. I usually have a strong strong urge to skip over dialogue but I was actually into it. Its even more interesting that psychologically I was drawn to actually wanna read these quirky little quips when clearly the best strategy is to just skip every dialogue prompt since you dont have to let it scroll to the end to get credit for talking. Only two games recently have made me interesting in reading for reading's sake and those are The Beginners Guide and Undertale... and now Close friends.

I was going to make a comment about replayability being low since my instinct was to wanna quit when I lost but I did give it another go just to see what was up and it seems there is some random or pseudo-random nature to the phrases so you aren't seeing the EXACT same stuff over and over.

Seriously charming.

Six by CodeChomper 2017-12-08T23:23:34Z

This is one of my top three for sure so far, maybe my favorite. I love puzzle games and this is a great blend of classic block pushing puzzles, quadrilateral cowboy style programming, and Portal style aesthetic and framing.

Pros: - I love the dialogue from the robot at the start AND the credits - Sound effects are great - East to understand but hard to master - mechanics that are deep but not complicated - The choice to not let the player rotate the camera was CRITICAL and you made the right decision! Excerise those spatial brain areas people! -Good mix of different puzzle elements (timing, spatial reasoning, logic) - good tutorial

Cons: - The "dont let your AI get dumb mechanic" should be analogue in some way rather than binary. What I mean by this is that as you more more moves per level perhaps your robot could be more likely to not follow a command or something like that rather than just having it be a game over state basically. I think this would be more fiting for the spirit of the theme of LD40.

Suggestions: - Let me copy and paste my commands for the timing based puzzles wher I know the answer but just need to press play at the right time.

Seriously think about developing this further, please :)

Potion Commotion by boaheck-artgent 2017-12-06T23:59:30Z

I LOVE the look of this game.

Pros:

First good 3d platformed I've seen in a LD

That cell shading. Mmmm hmmm.

The level design was straight forward but smart-- adding the sheep to the back tracking parts was a good decision so kudos.

I wanted to explore more. Like when I saw that bridge I was legitimately curious what was up there. It was a gem.

Cons:

This is borderline unplayable on keyboard; its the first game I actually dug around and took out my xbox controller for and GOD did it help. You should mention that up front like in meatboy (something like you REALLY should use a controller for this-- hint hint)

Not sure how it relates to the theme exactly mechanically-- it felt a little like the story was kinda shoe-horned in to have something relating to the theme (I did like the intro btw)

Excellent work, I really genuinely enjoyed playing it.

Be Yourself by Noa Calice 2017-12-08T01:46:29Z

This reminds me of an Edmund McMillen joint what with the mechanics and aesthetic that almost seem like a cry for help and the tongue-in-cheek humor and child like approach to fun in the mechanics.

Pros: - I love the fact that you can pick a character even though it has no bearing on the gameplay. Its just so fitting for this game - The best kind of mix of "personal and artistic" and "video-gamey" - Addictive (I could see this selling well on tablets and mobile.

Cons: - Maybe make it a bit more obvious when the black gooey goes go into those holes? I did not understand at first when they were sticking. Just an animation would be nice.

Keep up the good work!

Skulls n' Ladders by arly 2017-12-08T23:16:13Z

This has the potential to be incredibly addictive.

Pros: - Elegantly simple yet incredibly fun - Probably the most fun thing I've played yet and its just a 2/3 button game really - Easy to learn - Great choice of colors to highlight where player should be looking - The randomly generated ladder positions helps it stay fresh

Cons: - It took me quite a few runs before I realized I could kill the skulls and even more before I realized they could be tricked by the light my coins emit. This is fine though, I picked it up naturally with no tutorial.

- More coins is kind of a good thing even though you light radius grows

Leader's guidance by ExNihilo 2017-12-07T03:43:25Z

I really liked the 1984-esque aesthetic. The mechanic was pretty clever too. My only complaint is the collision detection on the edges. Otherwise, great game!

Dense Revolve by fiaKaiera 2017-12-06T02:56:20Z

Pros:

I was immediately attracted to the aesthetic style of the game

The "prepare" sound bite is a nice touch.

Cons:

I am kind of confused as to what was going on.

I know I can jump, shoot, move and reload but the gimmick seems to be that reloading makes you "weaker" or "stronger" which I guess translates to better movement/higher jumps? Sometimes I can wall jump other times I cannot.

Comments:

I dig alot of what you have here, but as a player I had a really hard time with it. Mainly it just needs a way of either tutorializing the player OR UI that is more intuitive so that people aren't confused.

The controls are a bit rough. Maybe consider movement on WASD, jump on space, and shoot and reload on the mouse.

Greedy Dungeon by daul 2017-12-06T23:16:29Z

That gauntlet man, really fun to use. Are there any other items in the chest? I got the gauntlet three times.

Pros: I love the look. First decent rogue like I've personally seen in an LD. The character design on the wizard guy was great-- that staff with the laurels on it.

Cons: The baddies are a little damage spongey-- this would have been fine actually had the gauntlet done more damage b/c my experience was this:

"Aw man this sword is not doin it its not really worth it to fight these guys I'm just gonna run like hell" "OH SHIT lookit the animation this gauntlet, its gonna fuck em up" "AH! I fucked em up!" "Oh wait no i just knocked em far back, here they come again"

Bugs (I wont hold these against you considering the procedural generation buuuut for your edification)

-I started in a door-less room my first run

-the first chest I found was blocked by a rock door the the baddies pushed in a way that I was unable to get to the chest. Thinking back maybe i needed the gauntlet to break this wall? At the time I thought it was a bug.

-Enemy drops sometimes get stuck in walls.

Nice work!

Beer Pong Arcade by banan 2017-12-07T23:55:31Z

Neat.

Straightforward concept (if not a little on the nose for the theme) and good mechanical transference -- it felt pretty damn similar to how it is to throw a beer pong ball in real life. Oh and the music too has this meandering off-tempo quality that adds to a sort of "drunk" feel. It's pretty damn fun-- I let my daughter play it for literally 20 minutes which is twice her attention span for super Mario Odyssey. I got really tripped up on the three cup level because it felt like a big jump in skill up from those beer bowls on level 1 and 2. I did beat it eventually but I could not make it past level 5.

My main suggestions would be this:

- Maybe make the "drunkeness" more extreme with the screen wobble as time goes on and misses accumulate. - Like in real beer pong if you get a cup you should get another throw no matter what. I had one scenario where I made it but I was still given a game over screen. Not sure if this was a bug or not.

Dial in the controls a bit (just a liiiiitle more give in the low power range) and this could be super addictive. Nice job!

Waiter, Please! by Chin Jieh 2017-12-06T05:21:31Z

Ah, a physics based game in LD-- this is actually the first time I've seen one and I loved it

Pros: Genuinely fun to play Very fitting for the theme

Cons: Controls are a little hard-- I wish I could play on an xbox controller rather than a keyboard with analogue inputs. Its not that you picked bad buttons to map to its just there is some disconnect in my brain trying to split between 2d physics on a flat plane and 4 directional movement.

Feed Them by Fis 2017-12-08T23:48:56Z

This is a neat game!

Pros: - I love being able to pick a character, even if it is only cosmetic - Non-violent themed but competitive at the same time (probably much better than Rivals of Aether thematically for my daughter to be playing :) ) - Interesting twist on the phrasing of the theme

Cons: - Its kind of difficult to aim the throws-- I think it might even work better if it were just about direction and how ong you held down a button rather than using a retical. - Its hard to tell when I'm scoring other than by looking at the bottom of the screen. Maybe give characters a chomping or eating animation when they're hit.

Nice work!

The Tulpa by nahual 2017-12-08T00:56:40Z

This game is surreal and strange creepy and has a very original look.

Pros: - Very good choice and use of color and silhouettes - Sense of intrigue - A feeling that this is a personal piece of art-- makes me wonder what life experiences inspired it. You say lucid dreams, but actually the feeling of playing this is more like an uncanny nightmare. In lucid dreams you have control where in this I get more of a feeling of being lost.

Cons: - The starting over when I get too weak is a little frustrating-- maybe at least keep the peices of the puzzle I've solved in the same place so that I don't have to re-hunt for things? - The environmental story telling is obstructed by the dreamy motion swirl effect

I really like what you're going for, keep it up.

DRAGLUTTONY by Reality Blind 2017-12-09T01:55:22Z

@Reality-Blind Come to think of it, it very well could be that its launching in full screen -- I have had issues with game maker launching in full screen so maybe its something with my graphics card or my computer and not just with game maker. Thanks for the quick responses, I'll keep an eye out for that build.

DRAGLUTTONY by Reality Blind 2017-12-09T17:43:39Z

Hey so I finally got it working late last night, but had to wait until this morning to give it a proper go with my girlfriend.

Pros: - The look, obviously - The conjuring of different foods is a nice touch - Good set of instructions and xbox controller support - wonderful animations and character designs

Cons/Suggestions/Observations: - I wish the spin move was more impactful so I could like lacrosse toss my food at the other baby dragon. Maybe have the player rotate the stick so they could wind up and really slam that food across the screen OR do it with finesse and shoot it up and over like a basketball. - Being higher up than your opponent seems to always be an advantage. - What is that thing that's freezing me when I conjure it? It seems to happen randomly.

Overall this is AMAZING for a first entry, excellent job guys.

Tight Five: Still Alive by weeping-rupee 2023-05-05T16:58:58Z

@the3rdhunter thanks for playing and the feedback! Actually a big part of the game is discarding cards you don't need. You might have missed the discard tutorial prompt. Maybe I'll put something about that in the description.

Tight Five: Still Alive by weeping-rupee 2023-05-06T04:32:41Z

@pkenney Thanks a ton for the thoughtful playthrough and feedback it really means ALOT (espcially with a game this complicated).

-The reason you cant play that one card face down is that I had to force the player to learn to flip and I didnt have time to put in a state for tutorialized and un-tutorialized players so unfortunately it's just like for now. You're right-- in an ideal version you would not be forced to play that face up.

-playing face down cards does still show you the total, but it hides the suit, which can matter sometimes on the hard levels

-Yes I wanted to add flipping cards in the hand it's literally at the top of my to-do list. I tried to put it in at the eleventh hour and it broke the game so I took it out haha

-The part about burning cards is somewhat intended-- I wanted it to be a drafting game with limited hand space. I do think it could definitely use some balancing though. Originally I pictured cards that would expand or contract your hand, etc. but never got around to it. I do wish I'd done six cards as the base though... I think maybe 6 cards is the sweet spot, currently there are five.

-I should have mentioned this in the video tutorial: getting rid of the heckler clears your combo but saves you from a fail state. There are upsides to it also, in that if you can get rid him you keep some of the hand you've built and essentially start over. There is a quick animation but it's easy to miss.

Since you gave me such thoughtful feedback dont let me forget to give your game the same-- I plan to play some more tomorrow and I'll definitely start w yours. Thanks a ton!

Tight Five: Still Alive by weeping-rupee 2023-05-06T16:02:51Z

@random-ideation-studios I'll add yours to my list for tonight. I'll be streaming it so I'll send you the VOD

Tight Five: Still Alive by weeping-rupee 2023-05-06T16:10:05Z

@justine-d

- Thats a good point-- the heckler should go away BEFORE the fail state check if you play a combo with the suit he wants... or maybe only if you can play that suit on both the punchline and the setup?

- Yes the number of cards to draw is a bit hard to follow-- it counts down by one but then if you cleat the heckler it goes back up to 4 (one round before heckler appears) so it basically goes 5,4,3,2,1,(heckler)4,3,2,1,(heckler).... though I'm guessing whats really happening is that some people are getting to the action round, not having any cards to play and then the game counts down and send you back to draw-- but you can also just hit "end turn" during the countdown and I think some people are hitting it JUST after it goes into the draw phrase again making it seem like you skipped a round.

- the skill cards should appear randomly in your next gig, you should always get one within the first 9 draws and the other two are random

- You can, in fact, give a face down card to the heckler if it's the right suit underneath :)

Thanks a ton for the thoughtful feedback I'll definitely try to give the same to yours!

Tight Five: Still Alive by weeping-rupee 2023-05-14T05:11:33Z

@knatt THank you for the awesome feedback-- The hard mode audience moods (apolitical, pearl clutching, etc.) I meant to be able to actually work in your favor and bring you back down below 21 in some circumstances, never really got a chance to test and balance them though because I threw them in at the 11th hour.

As for the repeat jokes thing I totally agree-- I literally wrote the punchlines and setups (30 each) in like 20 minutes and just went with it and recorded a custom sound file for each. One of my programmers was saying he probably could have rigged up an actual text to speech module that would read out whatever we wrote but it would have taken too much time. If we had gone that route we could have done literally hundereds of jokes bc we wouldnt have to do custom audio for each.

Anyway, thanks a ton for playing!

Moonshot by Koolruz 2023-05-18T01:02:58Z

@koolruz Oh right on! Should have thought of that, I tried ESC for some reason.

No lie: this was hands down the most fun game I played through the whole jam. You should make it into a competitive (or maybe even cooperative?) couch game, put it on Steam, and I will pay you money so I can get it and do remote play together with my friends. I would absolutely buy that.

One of the more interesting ideas I've seen, a bit punishing with how it kicks you back to the first alien encounter after any three fails though. Overall, very cool game, very cool art, a little tough. Played it on my stream if you're interested: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1818416980
