LD18 — Enemies as Weapons

Kanbran by DrPetter 2010-08-26T18:09:00

This was pretty fun, the first entry which I might actually keep on my HD and play in the future. Pinning an enemy to the ground so that they shoot upwards and hit other enemies is a unique take on the theme.

I normally dont like faux-ega-style graphics, but the animation of the little dude was pretty good so I had to give you 4 for graphics. I hope he didnt take too much of your 10 hours.

Audio was just a single tune repeating over and over, so I cant give many stars there im afraid, but at least it was present.

Sonic Boom by shockedfrog 2010-08-24T16:01:00

Awsome! Best use of the theme ive seen so far; I had to give you 4 for audio because its such a central part of it.I agree with comments about bullets being too slow, and that with a bit of tweaking this could be a winner post-compo.

Man Cannon by L 2010-08-24T15:44:00

Great work for 10 hours, although I feel that this would have been more awsome as a side or vertical scroller - that way you could arrange the enemies into waves with very little extra work.
I agree with comments about aiming with the mouse, that would make all the difference. Hitting enemies is hard as is.

Fight Chickens With Chickens by Sos 2010-09-05T02:52:00

I loved the sticking to the roof mechanism - i wonder if this feature originated as a physics bug but you decided to make it a gameplay element :P

I didnt find that launching the chickens at the other chickens made an effective weapon; more often than not, it was just one more chicken to avoid touching rather than a useful distraction for the zombie chickens. I liked the electronic looking ones which come out of a radio shaped hive.

Music was repetative, and no sound effects, so only 1 star for audio.

I found it very hard to navigate the level - at one point I ended up in an area with two giant round yellow chickens, but I died trying to sabotage their nests, and couldnt find that area again. I heard there was a level design issue, did I nearly manage to complete it? I cant get the last 2 hives and I think there were 2 hives in this area.

Fratricide by Riley Adams 2010-08-26T17:13:00

Nice idea, I like taking ships captive and then using their weapons. However, the one main flaw is that its too easy, for two reasons;
1) you are incredibly tough
2) your shields recharge

These issues could be fixed if the game was maintained post-competition of course.

It would be nice if your shield didnt recharge, and you instead had to collect health; as it is, I managed to play for 10 minutes without dying and stopped because gameplay hadnt changed.

I liked having the choice between a light ship with weak sheilds vs. a bigger, heavier ship which slowed me down.

Only 2 stars for audio since no music; 3 stars for community because you did several blog entries.

Alien Super Mega Blaster by Codheadz 2010-08-24T15:52:00

Unfortunately I couldnt run this, although I did get the idea from the video. I gave 2 for innovation due to the schrapanel mechanic. An interesting if indirect take on the theme.
I love the graphics; I might consider a similar style next LD :P 3 stars for that.

Undermine by droqen 2010-08-30T12:16:00

Pretty innovative, this is the first game ive seen where you slide between the enemies feet and then jump up to catapault them. The little red guys are annoying, the big ones are too easy to turn into missiles but the little ones are quite difficult. Perhaps if they paused and did the flashing head thing where you can then launch them up more often?

Graphics were cute, I laughed at the giant space invader creature.

Super Dahrai XVIII by Frimkron 2010-08-26T17:58:00

I LOL'ed when I saw the end boss; but I was disappointed that I couldnt actually defeat him :( If only you had a few more hours. The animation of that boss was actually rather cool, I liked the graphics overall, they had just the right sort of minimalist cartoony feel that I like in such a game.
No points for sound though... there wasnt any.

HOME by zdanielz 2010-09-05T02:34:00

I finally made it home! And I only died 27 times!

Nice concept, this could be an awsome story shooter. It just needs a minimap and more detailed levels. You really should develop this further!

The music ran out - perhaps it wasnt set to loop?

I am a fan of glowy vector graphics spaceships.

MegaTongue by piotrekb 2010-08-24T15:37:00

I couldnt really distinguish between the enemies and anything else.

I thought the tongue was awsome though

Attract by hturan 2010-09-05T02:19:00

Runs nicely in chrome, I actually found a neat strategy for killing them whereby they end up shooting themselves :p

I was able to nearly clear the board through a mix of this strategy and another where I would charge my Repulsion Energy, then use it to sit near one long enough for a barrage of bullets from other ones to kill it. I loled a bit when one killed itself (thus 2 for humor) but sadly no sound... so no stars there

AstroVax by moop 2010-08-26T17:43:00

I had the same problem as surrealix; I couldnt figure out why I should suck up the enemies other than to clear them from the screen or get a shield. In particular, I couldn't tell that the enemies were elemental, they just looked like different colours. I dont like this fake low resolution effect at all. Low resolution graphics were a necessity in the retro era due to hardware constraings, not a stylistic choice, and your choice of faking a 320x200 resolution played against you here because I had no idea they were fire/earth/water. Just thought they were different colours.

On the up side, once you figure out that there is a strategy to deciding which enemies to use as weapons and how to do it properly, the game gains an additional layer of depth. The game is also quite close to my idea of the theme, so 4 stars there.

Rubber and Glue by alexandersshen 2010-08-26T17:47:00

I dont have many opinions on this really. I found that it wasnt so much a game as a test of reflexes. I wasnt reading the words, just using the colour to decide.

There were no enemies! Only their words. This could have been done as a turn based fighting thing, FF style. That would have given it more depth.

LD21 — Escape

Fragmentation by Riley Adams 2011-09-12T15:05:00

I really enjoyed this. I got to a score of 7498 before I fell out of the level. I don't know if this was "escaping" or just the failure to implement a victory screen. I also liked the cut scene at the start.

This is the first game I'm giving 5 starts to for innovation. I also liked the combination of gravity rotating, jumping, and crouching, it isn't too complicated, forget what others are saying. They can fight me if they disagree.

Bounce-onium! by McFunkypants 2011-08-24T00:59:00

Not much depth here - was fun up to I think level 5, beyond which all levels are the same. Is missing something, probably a failure condition.

Anthony's Psyche: Escape by Martoon 2011-09-12T14:49:00

I also find this haunting, but very artistic, especially the realisation that some of his earlier thoughts are actually excuses. A nice twist of the theme, i suppose the end was justice in a way, but also a kind of escape.

Escaparazzi by Felipe Budinich 2011-08-25T00:56:00

Can I just ask, honestly, did you remake "dance of the bumblebee"? Not accusing you of anything, just curious.

UpRunner by Flyboy 2011-08-24T01:53:00

I liked it, although on my first playthrough I only got one laser and it didn't manage to even hit me. I like how the little dude's legs spin as he runs. Climbing to escape spinning blades is also quite fun.

SurfN-2-Sur5 by Daniel X. Moore 2011-08-24T02:27:00

I'm too tired to play this right now, i find it irritating that I can surf for less than a second then have to wait 4 seconds to try again. I promise to play and rate this later.

Escape the Normal Life by Lancelot Gao 2011-08-24T00:48:00

Nice concept, but not much depth do the actual gameplay.
No sound or music. Graphics were OK, i like the ghostly nature of the "normal people", it would have been better if they had sapped your energy or something.

ESCAPE by alfie275 2011-09-12T14:26:00

lol, fighting a wall xD maybe I should have put that in my game. Anyway, I found the combat system innovative, although it took a few attempts before I could reliably defeat guards. No audio though.

Cells by Jimjam 2011-08-24T01:24:00

Interesting concept. I managed to escape, but was left feeling as if I wasnt really challenged by it. Maybe this is because I'm a 1337 h4xx0r or maybe because it was too easy.

Nice graphics. I like the lights. I also laughed when I blew the fuse on level 2. With a bit of work this could become a puzzle game, as it is there is always one clear path through.

Pointless Spheres From Above by pragmascript 2011-08-23T15:08:00

I couldnt work out how to make the first platform start up. When I looked through a window near the starting point, I saw a red switch, but couldnt work out how to turn it on. I also tried jumping onto the platform but I hit the roof before I was halfway to it and fell.

Escape from the Dungeons of Dread by Momeka_ 2011-09-12T14:42:00

A couple of things irritated me. I ran it from source, because I didn't want to run an MSI, and I didn't like the one button movement. However, when I hacked the code to give me 4way movement I liked it. I really don't think the 1 button movement worked. I hope we see a lot more roguelikes in the future because they are le awesome.

Dude Running From an Explosion by naxum 2011-08-24T01:13:00

Fairly basic, not terribly innovative, although I must confess I'm getting sick of platformers so I may be considered biased here.

Randomly generated levels occasionally create silly inescapable scenarios.

Es' Cape by EncryptedShadow 2011-08-24T01:19:00

I love the boggley eyes. +1 for humor. Not sure about the depth of gameplay though, it would have been good if there were multiple layers to stand on. Nice twist on the theme - es's cape rather than escape. This is stretching it a bit but at least you think outside the box, (unlike your characters, who are all boxes).

Blockhead Can't Escape by Bleck 2011-08-24T01:41:00

Needs moar levels! also, a winning condition. I believe all games should have a failure and a winning condition, otherwise they are interactive stories. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but this game is too short to qualify as an interactive story.

Graphics are nice, and so is the level design. I think there is only one sound though, the sound of the spikes coming up? That bit on the last level is a bit evil, i crapped myself running in a circle to avoid being skewered.

"Get to da choppa!" by itsarabbit 2011-08-24T14:06:00

Needs an arrow or a minimap, something to give da player an idea of how to get to da choppah. I also got lost in da areas with no features. I didn't manage to get to da choppah.

The Complex by Erifdex 2011-08-24T02:16:00

Needs checkpoints. I like the level design, controls are also nice and smooth. I'm not sure what the point of the crosshair is though. Is this something to do with the lighting system you mentioned?

Shotgun Man Will Shoot You by kirbytails7 2011-08-24T02:24:00

Whatever that creature is I keep wanting it to get shot.
Nice gameplay, well done for having music, but I cant say it appeals to me. Graphics are cool. A classic health system would be much better than the death condition you currently have, which is just annoying.

Asplosions! by blahoink 2011-08-24T02:06:00

LIke the graphics, like the gameplay and the concept.

IF you die, the sumo's continue to spawn right on top of you making it too hard to continue. It was fun up to that point.

Graphics are nice, no sound though (or did my sound just not work)

blue man cthulhu escape by nickd3000 2011-08-24T00:52:00

CTHULU GET!
Yeah, this was kind of amusing. Would have benefited greatly from a wider variety of obstacles, not just doors.

Ambrose leaves by onzephyr 2011-08-24T14:00:00

I got to the end, expecting an explanation of why I needed the lights and/or bricks, but none came, so I'm not quite sure whats happening here.

Legendary Lava Escape by speciesUnknown 2011-08-23T15:15:00

Yeah, I'm disappointed that I couldn't get the lighting done in time. It makes it hard to see where you are going.

Legendary Lava Escape by speciesUnknown 2011-08-24T00:42:00

summaky:
It does require SM2.0 to run, I'm not sure I could really have made the requirements any lower. I used the XNA 'reach' profile which is designed for low end DX9 hardware.

LD23 — Tiny World

Nix by rustybroomhandle 2012-05-02T22:54:00

Shame about the lack of music, that would have added mood to the game, although in its current unfinished state its not much of a game. Not a bad concept, although I think the theme was a bit weak in it.

Don't mess with magical cube by toadd-y 2012-04-30T14:34:00

Too hard for me :( I dont like platformers anyway, (translation: i suck at platformers anyway) but I liked the graphics and the switch mechanisms. I couldnt hear any sound though - is it missing, or is my sound card broken again?

Removed by SBareS 2012-04-30T14:36:00

I've learned from experience that a large proportion of LD'ers cannot run XNA games, either because they don't read the instructions to install the right stuff, or they dont WANT to install stuff, or they arent running windows.

Galactic Taxi by remeh 2012-04-30T14:25:00

How about I do you a deal - ill port it to windows for you, if you put a nice link to my game somewhere in your description :P
I've looked through it, and it looks like apart from statically linking allegro, everything should compile on windows just fine.

Galactic Taxi by remeh 2012-05-02T23:05:00

I've started getting this to build with MSVC10, ive got it compiling but not linking - need to work out what allegro dependencies there are. Watch this space.

Super Fun Crushy Time! by Darkfrost 2012-04-23T21:59:00

Very good. I ate a house. Then I won. It becomes more of a challenge not to step in the traps when you get large, which makes it more fun; I was sad when I ate a cat though.

Puny Planet by Sichuan 2012-04-26T02:16:00

Works nicely for me. I found that there were more than one way to destroy other planets. My favorite was to push a big planet into the way of a smaller one so that the big one's sattelites impacted the smaller one. However, It did get repetative, and the environment was too sparse, so I got bored fairly quickly.

Buggiest Game Ever by speciesUnknown 2012-04-26T15:37:00

I originally was about to abandon this game, but I've had such a positive response that I think its worth continuing post-compo. I'll fix the bugs first, and add terrain, and put up a post-compo version.

Thanks for all the play tests guys and gals.

Buggiest Game Ever by speciesUnknown 2012-05-03T02:29:00

Dan C:
You're right, its not finished - I was hoping to hand craft some levels, but the flowers are just placed randomly on level load. I was also hoping that larders and guard holes could only be placed near the main nest.

Sprace by Niavlys 2012-04-30T14:41:00

Amusing idea, and nice simple gameplay, but it gets tedious fast. Also, a couple of times, a sperm started with its head already at the right edge of the screen.

LD34 — Two Button Controls / Growing

Breeze by thynnmas 2016-01-02T01:18:00

Nice work, I didn't know you could put for loops in a shader - you now have me curious about raymarching.

Divide and Conquer by Etag 2015-12-19T22:12:00

Its good to see people still using XNA - the last game I submitted to LD that used XNA was a flop because nobody wanted to run permanent installers to play one game.

The game crashed on run - I think you should do a post compo fix (this is allowed, btw, if you read the rules) so you can make it work even if the database has gone down. If you don't change the game mechanics and just let the game work with no database, it would be fine.

Director Morse by tompudding 2015-12-19T22:09:00

This game has a lot of potential, but I had serious problems playing it. I suggest you fi

I was unable to morse properly, i was definitely keying in the correct sequences, but it still didn't let me do anything - I did accidentally send an A and make the robot turn round and scan, though.

I see you fixed these issues in the post compo version, but sadly I cannot consider that version when rating. I would like to see this game taken further.

Let's Poke by garygreen 2015-12-19T21:51:00

Couldnt play - for a competition like LD you really need to support the common platforms. Didn't want to install this on my phone for security reasons, I'm OK with wiping my PC each time I enter ludumdare but not my phone!

Saneedling by commanderstitch 2016-01-01T23:47:00

I would love to see this expanded into an RPG with a story. Great fun, shame its not a full game - I suspect you fell into the old trap of over complicating the coding and not doing enough game - given that its basically a top down walking around game in its current state.

The vocals of the "plant" made me laugh as I walked around at ate everything including trees, rocks, and a bridge.

Trump Buttons Incorporated by FloatingGhost 2016-01-02T01:43:00

Way too complicated, but I get what you were trying to do - if you ever played dope wars or one of the other games of that type, you might be able to use that kind of mechanic instead. I was able to pump up demand for a product then drop the quality and flog it until it flatlined, then swap to the other button, but I may have been fluky in making a profit this way - not sure what was really happening.

Snow Goat Avalanche by loxo 2015-12-19T21:59:00

Made me laugh, although i would found it more amusing if it was a running goat (with animations) instead of a snowball - the sound was amusing at first but became annoying making a noise with every button press.

Baaa baaa baa baaa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa baa

Journey of a Ball by guoboism 2016-01-02T01:38:00

This was great, I especially like how each level was basically its own 2 button game, and the fact that the story wraps up - I was very happy when I got to deliver the kids their ball back at the end. The definitely helped with mood.

Turkeyconn Simulator 2016 by Turkey 2015-12-19T21:28:00

Couldnt work out what to do, i never had more than $300 and I couldnt work out how to make the turkeys do something other than go back and forth between the coal and the power plant.

Cultivate by kmakai 2015-12-19T16:19:00

I like this, especially the sudden break when i played tennis - the controls being used for a different purpose temporarily. I was also a rebel and didn't take the aptitude test.

DNA Polymerase by Bering 2016-01-01T23:40:00

I thought DNA was CA or TG, this is very odd - not sure its a full game right now. Also not sure why you only put yourself forward for 3 categories.

Totally Not Buggy Elevator by veverichka 2015-12-19T22:23:00

I couldnt run this - I think Unity's web player is letting you down; I get this error,
"Invalid typed array length."
Either you screwed up a vertext buffer or the webgl player screwed up compiling.

Totally Not Buggy Elevator by veverichka 2015-12-19T22:23:00

I couldnt run this - I think Unity's web player is letting you down; I get this error,

Either you screwed up the length of a vertex buffer or the webgl player screwed up compiling.

Momentum by Wumbo 2015-12-19T21:19:00

Nobody is playing - this means I can't actually play it. Sorry bro.

Growdom by Wevel 2015-12-19T21:35:00

I didn't really get it, maybe I'm a bit thick - I couldn't work out what the problem was when things started to go wrong. I did think it was quite innovative, it has a lot of potential if the player communication problems could be ironed out.

Garden Grow by justinooncx 2015-12-19T15:32:00

Very good, I got sad when I killed a bird until I read the instructions...

Xtreme Crop Duster Simulator '82 by rjhelms 2016-01-02T01:22:00

I kept sucking at this, but I like how it kind of relates to both themes - the post process effect of being a C64 game rocked as well.

Super Space Invader by BlackBulletIV 2016-01-01T03:21:00

Nice one, I missed the formative years of my live where one gets good at vertically scrolling shooters, so I found it a bit hard, but everything was well polished, the music and graphics suit the format perfectly. Great work.

Ortogonalis by pjimmy 2015-12-19T15:37:00

Very nice, my final score was 2542, nice mechanic but I think it was constrained a little too much by actually having only one control - I would have considered pause buttons not to be part of the controls for the purpose of the theme.

One Day I'll Be A Flower by Ovidios 2015-12-20T17:46:00

Great job, was quite fun, and included both mechanics so gets my "double mechanic" bonus.

Super 'Christmas Tree' Tycoon by Conk 2015-12-20T20:23:00

I couldn't work out when to harvest my "christmas tree", there's no feedback to the user when something is ready.

Bud the Gardener by xdigdoug 2015-12-20T20:14:00

Not sure what was happening - i managed to get 7 seeds but I didnt see any plants, maybe I was doing it wrong.

Cucumbersome by jmf 2015-12-20T20:10:00

good work, i went to the end even though I struggled to get 40 - im not sure if there was a penalty to button mashing, but that might be a good idea, i was able to do quite well initially just pressing dd [space] dd [space] dd [space] dd [space]

Snowballin' by Frenchie 2016-01-02T01:14:00

Very calming game, with the snow and the generally soft sounds - you should add more objects , such as skiers and a yeti - but don't overdo it.

I got too big to avoid trees and that limited my growth, I went through a forest before getting back to open slopes - are you using perlin noise or something like that?

Great work.

The Artifact by nunesbarbosa 2015-12-19T17:30:00

Good work, I got to the end, wish it longer - I would probably pay a small amount of money for a longer version of this.

Shoot Or Don't Shoot by Coomzy 2015-12-19T16:03:00

(disclaimer: I don't read instructions, neither do many people - they just want to play right away).

Very tough, I initially thought it was a twitch game, because with a mouse its somewhat misleading - I tried to click the guys with guns as fast as possible, before realising that I was killing everybody in every room... when I realised it was good fun. You should have made the controls Y or N instead, then it would have been clear what was happening.

1 Button Wizard X2 by BoxedMeatRevolution 2015-12-20T16:51:00

This is excellent, if I were you I would definitely expand this, it has great potential as a phone game.

Can't Jump by x92rwzb 2015-12-19T15:55:00

I got frustrated because you have to get the platform moving pixel perfect, didn't manage to finish level 1 - after falling 15 times I gave up.

Totally Normal Train by jigalx 2016-01-01T03:26:00

Thanks for the warning, but I only listen to my own advice, and even then, only when I'm drunk. So I played anyway.

This does have potential as an idea for some kind of game.

Regarding whether or not you should submit things, even if its not done you should or your time is wasted - even one person's feedback could be of value.

SPACEBRIX extreme by mard 2015-12-19T21:23:00

Nice graphics, but I don't see the theme - its not two button controls, as you're using mouse movement and left click, and I can't see what grows.

I liked sucking up bricks to shoot at everybody however.

FLOW by Romixal 2015-12-19T15:12:00

A very moody game, maybe it was too hard for me - I wasn't able to work out what to do, I found two sounds - tried to reach them, went round in circles a few times - not sure if there is an objective I missed.

SWOOP/POOP by Foofanoo42 2015-12-20T20:28:00

Good fun, I found that rapid fire pooping increased my hit rate massively - i would suggest making poop a limited resource, and provide some way to get more such as stealing it from pedestrians - this way, it would have potential as a mobile game.

Yggshroom by Ghen 2015-12-19T15:52:00

Good job, you got both themes into the game and it was fun to balance my time between the generator, mushroom, and water supply. I died before I could grow the full mushroom. You should give the professor a hair power-up which makes him less vulnerable to the asteroids.

The War of Japants by Blobo 2015-12-19T21:56:00

Nice twist on roof runner games, I found it a bit hard to jump on the peaked roofs, my pants jumped automatically and then missed the ledge, so I couldn't jump in time - I also found a sideways area, you should make those more common, as they add variety. I found it satisfying to shoot ninja stars at rival pants.

I gave you the highest score i've given any game so far for mood and humor.

Wayward Souls by intXparts 2015-12-19T16:12:00

I couldn't get past the point where I met the narrator and ate his toasties, was that supposed to be the end? I pressed Esc and the game still exited. You should definitely expand this game, add a story and things to discover.

Botany by Steven Miller 2015-12-19T15:46:00

Excellent, I'll probably be keeping this game to play later, which is not usual for an LD game - my favorite so far. I liked the mechanic of growing other plants to help you.

Hello Darkness by jcmonkey 2015-12-19T15:18:00

The music was a little repetative, but it was very playable, I got bored after a few levels though - the enemies are a bit easy to kill as their paths are predictable - you just have to leave a mine in their way. I have a soft spot for dungeon crawlers, the torch is a nice touch.

Feed The Hole by krashja 2015-12-19T15:59:00

You should rename the "WebGL" version above as "Chrome" as I'm seeing quite a few comments that people cannot run the game on chrome, even though you put up a chrome version.

Anyway, game was good fun, if short and a bit too easy, i completed it first time without dying.

I like that the buttons are in fact buttons on a cockpit that you click - technically you have only the one button! Good job.

Pyromaniac 3 -- 2 by _benhumphries 2016-01-02T01:52:00

Nice game, a bit easy - i was able to reliably jump over all the firemen and just wait till the secondary fires consumed them. I was also excited when I found I could push the fire engines around - perhaps you could add a mechanic based on pushing fire engines into fires or off cliffs or something?

You are allowed to fix bugs - if the game is unplayable, so long as you don't make changes to the gameplay itself.

I waited a minute or so and couldnt run it - this was on firefox.

(Later)
Downloaded it, was able to "play" although there isn't a game. An art game must still be a game - what you have here is a story (a very short one).

No windows version? Couldn't be bothered to reboot just to play a game, you need cross platform options.

Kill 'Mall by kepons 2015-12-19T21:45:00

For some reason, I find making people go splat very satisfying, its like catching a mosquito as is drinking from you. It could do with an antagonist, except from running into walls - otherwise its a nice twist on snake. The pavement made my eyes hurt so I couldn't play for too long.

Tubutten Beetle by YinYin 2015-12-19T15:29:00

This was good fun, i managed to go so fast I apparently turned red and caught fire, I'm not sure if it was a power up or an Easter egg but it made me laugh.

A Growing Threat by AM_Games 2015-12-21T11:12:00

Nice one, this definitely has merit if it was polished a bit more over time - a few issues to work out; once I defeated the boss (by cheating) I didnt get to see it blow up - there should be a screen at the end. Also, bullets shouldn't go through a non vulnerable spot of an enemy - they should bounce off or have some other visual clue that damage is not being done.

SnakeRPG by VDZ 2016-01-01T03:03:00

This is a great idea, you got very good ratings from me, particularly in innovation - I would like to see this concept explored a bit more, preferably in a platform which is more accessible. A simple tile based game like this could be done in js / canvas so there would be nothing for players to install.

I'm really sad to say that XNA is not the right platform for LD - the only LD game I ever submitted flopped because very few people could play it.

FlOBA (fixed server!!) by RHY3756547 2015-12-20T17:52:00

NETWORK ERROR: [object Event] here as well. Sorry dude, you need a better server.

I could help you out as I have node running on a server I barely use - email me, zombiebovine at gmail dot com

Serpentine by Cryptix 2016-01-01T03:30:00

I am sad because its mac specific and I can't play :(

I wish people, especially those with clear skills such as yourself, would choose more accessible platforms.

fight or flight by zuurr 2015-12-21T11:43:00

NIce game, unfortunately it gets gradually slower and slower - I had a look at the code, and it seems you've implemented a fixed framerate, but what you forgot is that if the game cannot catch up, its going to do more and more updates per second and never catch up.

You need to put a limit on the number of times it loops to guarantee 1/60 time slices - 4 is a good number, since games become unplayable when they are less than 15fps anyway, and it would mean that if the game is running at 30hz instead of 60, it won't slow down over time.
I couldnt get the game to build (npm build? still no compiled file)

anyway, this should do the trick - it guarantees that the framerate doesnt drop below 15, and it stops the endless accumilation of time owed

var limit = 4;
while (this.accum >= dt && limit > 0) {
--limit;
++this.ticks;
Vec2.Pool.reset();
this.game.update(dt);
Clock.accumTime += dt;
Input.update();
this.accum -= dt;
++Clock.ticks;
}
// we couldnt catch up - fugedaboudit
if (limit == 0) {
this.accum = 0;
}

Nice work, a great puzzle game, it would be awesome if this were expanded to create more variety - i got stuck on 75 green, 200 red, 200 blue - no matter where I put things I couldn't quite get the numbers up.

Epic ooze escape by speciesUnknown 2015-12-19T16:30:00

What I really want to know is, did anybody beat the game? Other than myself of course, I think it may have been too hard.

Epic ooze escape by speciesUnknown 2015-12-19T22:14:00

Its good to be getting so much feedback - I'll find out how the controls can be improved, I plan to do a lot more ascii roguelikes in future LD's and controls are the hardest part with a roguelike.

Epic ooze escape by speciesUnknown 2015-12-20T05:03:00

rjhelms, im glad you agree with me that a "proper" roguelike is ascii art - theres nothing wrong with the modern variations but I wanted to get back to the roots.

Epic ooze escape by speciesUnknown 2015-12-20T13:22:00

Thanks guys, I've seen a few games like this - particularly this one, which is also a "proper" roguelike in my eyes.

Bring back proper roguelikes to LD!

@Frenchy, thanks, some good ideas there - after I finish my current project I think this might be a good side project, I have a few ideas, mostly down to player communication

1) When monsters speak, draw a speech bubble, with onomatopoeia for humor
2) Colour the text when things happen
3) Display damage on screen near the creature that was damaged

Epic ooze escape by speciesUnknown 2016-01-02T04:54:00

@jigalx did you actually complete it? So far I've not heard anybody say they managed to complete the whole thing.

Epic ooze escape by speciesUnknown 2016-01-06T13:24:00

@rzuf
Im glad to hear somebody finally report that they completed it - you found one of the solutions to defeat the minotaur, congratulations.

You may be the only person other than myself to complete the game.

I found it very challenging to hit the boxes exactly once to change their direction, it was very hard - it does inspire me to create some asteroids like games with non-standard ways of winning however (e.g. use tractor beam to rescue people while causing asteroids to reverse direction rather than destroying them, something like that).
