LD18 — Enemies as Weapons

Sonic Boom by shockedfrog 2010-08-23T13:49:00

Thanks for the comments so far!

I toyed around with the shots quite a bit, didn't quite get the patterns the way I wanted but I'm glad the effort's been noticed. :)

I went into making this game with a bit of a negative attitude and the sound was intentionally meant to be a bit grating, not that I can claim to be enough of a musician/sound guy to make something that isn't! I'm considering developing this further post-compo, though, and if I do I'll try to make (or get someone else to make) something a bit more harmonious.

Sonic Boom by shockedfrog 2010-08-23T16:40:00

Thank you, I'm amazed at how positive these comments are! While I'm normally one of those people who'll fight to save standalone exes from the trend of making everything Flash, the idea that this would suit Flash did cross my mind. Of course, I don't know the first thing about Flash coding yet, but I guess I should use this as a project to learn Flixel or Flashpunk with.

The bullet speed is an interesting thing to play with, really changes the style of the game. I quite like it as is, with the bullets acting like some sort of space-mine or torpedo, but it works as a more typical shooter with faster bullets too. Maybe I'll offer both as an option, perhaps a choice of different ships each offering a variation on the gameplay.

I'd love to be fancy and say I'm using a vector field but honestly I'm not entirely sure what one is. :) The cyan bullets are simply following a sine wave pattern. The others are technically following wave patterns too (yellow = square wave, magenta = sawtooth) but due to the nature of their shapes they're not quite as clear and don't make such pretty bullet patterns.

Sonic Boom by shockedfrog 2010-08-23T18:28:00

Each living sound enemy activates one of your three guns, but when you're flying within 100 pixels of one (or more) of them, you'll hear a somewhat annoying constantly changing pitched sound of their wavetype, the shots of their type will become brighter, and they'll do 5 times the damage, enough to kill a level 1 enemy with one shot. Even at the highest health 3 powered shots will do, though the balance is dreadful and I doubt many people will reach that point - I certainly can't. :)

Sonic Boom by shockedfrog 2010-08-30T20:39:00

Thanks again for the comments! For curiosity value I've put up a post-LD version (d6) which doubles the bullet speed, fixes one of the graphics, maybe other minor changes I forgot. :) I don't think HGE has any gamepad support, but it's something I'll keep in mind whenever I get back to working on my own engine.

My priority for now is getting the Flash version running, but once that's done I'm going to try to sort out the balance a bit and make the enemies more interesting.

Space Recycler by Darkhogg 2010-09-04T07:46:00

While the controls and general balance of the game do need a little work, overall I think this is one of the best entries and it deserves a bit more attention than it's got so far. Any plans to develop this further?

LD20 — It's Dangerous to Go Alone! Take This!

Fishing vs Aliens by shockedfrog 2011-05-02T15:35:00

In its current state, being able to hold space would make more sense, but the original intent was to make it a button mashing game with the fish struggling against the player.

Take This Or Die by VoooDooo 2011-05-05T01:50:00

I don't know much about XNA but I'm sure there's games using it that don't require an installer - shouldn't be a need to join the browser based horde just for that reason. :)

LD22 — Alone

Al1 by shockedfrog 2012-01-04T22:17:00

Thanks for the comments so far! The theme link is definitely weak (especially after I added all the opponents), but I wasn't taking it too seriously anyway and I'm just glad people are enjoying it somewhat. I'm half-considering working on this further as a Flash game, though it's definitely not a priority project for me. If it does happen though, better in-game instructions and a better paced powerup phase (such as only starting on the first keypress) are on the list of much-needed improvements, along with everything else. :)

The Knock by Jorjon 2012-01-08T05:22:00

As a 48-hour effort at an escape-the-room game I think this is pretty good. It's not a genre I care for much, and the gameplay and story didn't do a whole lot for me, but I thought the periodic table puzzle was well thought out. An in-game hint (or hint button) might have worked better rather than spoiling it in the game description, though.

I like the overall atmosphere of the game - the sound fits well, and I like the way you created the graphics and kept it compo legit. :)

LD24 — Evolution

Tower of Babble by shockedfrog 2012-08-28T02:21:00

Hehe :) When I looked up the meaning/use of evolution in the dictionary, "evolution of a language" was one of the examples given, though this probably wasn't what they had in mind.

.ISO - Part One by Kortuga 2012-08-27T18:37:00

While the rules page doesn't do a good job of explaining it, the generally understood purpose of the "drum loops, drum samples, and sampled instruments allowed" rule is to let you use short samples and loops as part of the process of creating your own music.

.ISO - Part One by Kortuga 2012-08-27T19:00:00

Don't worry about it - pretty much nobody ever gets disqualified. :) For the most part, people who know about the audio issue here will vote the audio down (and that might reduce their overall score) but will still rate the rest of your game fairly. You might get a few people who are a bit harsher, but it's best not to take the ratings too seriously anyway.

LD26 — Minimalism

Untitled by zaratustra 2013-04-27T15:26:00

Nice idea, shame it doesn't work :/ The presumably unintended side effect is amusingly odd.

LD27 — 10 Seconds

TickType by shockedfrog 2013-08-26T01:50:00

Yeah, the game is designed to be small, but the page was just put up in a last minute rush. :) I'll put up a better page for it later.

TickType by shockedfrog 2013-08-26T02:41:00

Slightly better page up for now :)

My own scores so far: Easy: 1244, Hard: 563. Hard mode is a great example of one of those games that someone can make but still be terrible at. :)

TickType by shockedfrog 2013-09-09T19:27:00

Thanks for the detailed feedback :) Level progress is based purely on score - 100 points equals one level - so the blue experience bar is also a score indicator of sorts. I felt it was better not to display a complete numeric score during the game as the constantly changing numbers on screen could be distracting, especially in hard mode.

Generally it's always better to type as long as you don't miss space as a result of trying too hard. :) You score more points for typing depending on how much health you have left, with the maximum bonus being when you already have full health.

Which losing message did it display? If it said you ran out of health, then that's expected - half a second is quite a long time in this game, in fact, by level 8, pressing half a second too early would result in death even if you had a full health bar. If, however, the game over message said that you missed the 10 second mark despite pressing space before it, then there might be a bug somewhere.

TickType by shockedfrog 2013-09-10T20:43:00

Thanks for that :) The tutorial was a little bit rushed and could have been a bit clearer in places, though I'm glad I at least put a basic tutorial in or nobody would understand how to play at all.

No Time to Stop by Alink 2013-08-26T15:41:00

Fun game, felt the difficulty was just about right for a LD game. Great work on the level design (both the actual puzzles and the variety.)

Planet Monster by 01010111 2013-08-27T00:17:00

It's a fairly standard (and very short) tower defense game, but fun while it lasts and the presentation is nice. :)

(48Mins) Can You Count To... by nixeldev 2013-08-26T03:02:00

I like the simplicity of it, though some greater variation between levels or some kind of endgame/high scores would have been nice. Great job for a 48 minute game, though. :)

Time Tile by Mythalore 2013-08-27T15:43:00

The game's style is nice and the music (though repetitive) is ok, and I like the game's 'story' :) The awkward controls and lack of any real challenge let the gameplay down though, and the theme feels tacked on since the slowdown feature feels completely unnecessary. Good work for a single day, though, and thanks for including a downloadable version even if it is massive. :)

Time Crystal by Xaipher 2013-08-28T01:04:00

The lack of instructions makes it difficult to appreciate the game fully - if you're reading this you should edit your entry page to add some - but there seems to be an interesting kind of strategy game here. The graphics and presentation are quite nice and though the music wasn't created for the game, it fits well.

Runner Up by Jeremy Nikolai 2013-08-28T00:50:00

Nice alternative interpretation of the theme, and the racing was quite well made and fun, though the teleport powerup was kinda strange and the results seemed weird - twice I was in second place going into the last straight and suddenly my position was rapidly changing to 1st or 4th, so I ended up in a volcano. :/

Terminal 10 by alts 2013-09-09T19:45:00

I responded to your comments on my game. :) As for yours, this is great! The humour and design are spot on. The DDR part was a bit too crazy (kinda easier just to mash the buttons than actually try to play it) but it's still satisfying to win.

Haraka by gikdew 2013-08-27T13:31:00

Fortunately the game seemed to work perfectly fine in Firefox so yay for not having to use Chrome. :)

Nice presentation, though I think it would have been better without the autotracker music. Other than that it's a fairly standard but fun platformer. I couldn't figure out how to get past the bit after the second screenshot, after the long jump.

Future Sport 3000 by Alexander 2013-08-27T00:35:00

The graphics and camera are crazy, but I kinda like them. :) Great music too. There's not much challenge to the gameplay (I scored 28 first time while I was learning the controls, but if I played again I'm pretty sure I'd get the maximum score) but there's an interesting idea in here, this kind of solo sport/human pinball thing. I felt the use of the theme was fairly weak, but overall it's one of the more interesting entries that I've played so far.

Future Sport 3000 by Alexander 2013-08-27T00:38:00

Oh, forgot to mention - you need to include a link to your game's source, it's a requirement for competition entries.

MegaPunch by Nick Weihs 2013-08-27T13:55:00

Thanks for the Windows version. :) Basically just going to say the same as everyone else - Brilliant graphics and audio, the gameplay didn't feel quite right (I'm guessing due to lag) and lacks a few basic things (names, scoring/killtext/objectives, etc.) but it's amazing work for a weekend and could grow into something great. I hope you continue to develop this. :)

One control bug - X evades instead of jumps, C does nothing. The HJKL controls work fine, though.

deci-mer by Back to Browse Entries 2013-08-27T16:09:00

For some reason Avast says the game is trying to change auto-start settings, not sure what's going on there. I ran it sandboxed though.

Not sure what the character is supposed to be (I think it's a bomb, or a spider) but I like the quirky style, just needs a bit more gameplay.

Delta Dodge by ranf 2013-08-28T00:41:00

Brilliant dodging game - challenging but doesn't feel unfair, some interesting mechanics and nice graphics and audio.

10 seconds to die by mrcdk 2013-08-26T03:34:00

Fun game, funny instructions. :) I quite liked the music despite its repetitiveness.

this is not a entry, it's a mistake by gobstopper 2013-08-27T13:09:00

Better luck next LD :) I'm kinda curious about what the game actually was or was intended to be from that screenshot.

Crazy Genetist by ratalaika 2013-08-26T04:12:00

The gameplay is fun - reminds me of Pipemania and Atomino - but feels a bit too luck dependent. The music is great. :)

Speed of love by bobylito 2013-08-28T00:02:00

Not much to the gameplay but I love the idea. :)

00000010 by Vile Smile 2013-08-27T16:54:00

It takes a while for the gameplay to really get going, but it was worth the wait and it feels complete. Great style and audio.

Tracewire by Drachlen 2013-08-26T03:56:00

Simple, fun gameplay, appealing graphics and sound/music, and even a level editor - great entry overall, already feels quite complete but I'd love to see it developed further.

In the Seed by Snky 2013-09-16T13:29:00

I won! :D I love the style of it, it's like a much prettier version of a couple of my own games. Nice touches of humour too and the gameplay that's there is fun - I'd love to see it expanded a bit. I'm not sure what music LTyrosine is referring to - I don't hear any audio from the game.

For future reference, as Kohijin mentioned, while there needs to be one game link, you can rename it - Windows generally means a standalone Windows game which means people without Windows or people reluctant to download games are likely to ignore it. Renaming it to Web or Flash would have probably attracted a few more ratings.

10 second unicorn by robbe 2013-08-27T23:45:00

Funny and cute game, but you're not allowed to use existing/other peoples music in compo entries. :/

Antidote by Antidote 2013-09-15T01:21:00

Fast and fun game, nice style, but needs something to do with the money to stop it just being about running to the door and skipping everything else. :)

Can you count to 10? by BackwardSpy 2013-08-27T15:55:00

Same issue here unfortunately, also on XP.

Will you beat 10 seconds? by Urfoex 2013-08-28T18:00:00

Sounds fun, looking forward to trying this if someone makes a Windows version. :)

little mishmash by LeReveur 2013-08-27T14:11:00

First few times I tried it I couldn't solve the puzzle, then I tried it again and it only actually moved two columns so I solved it in 8 seconds. :) As you say it's not quite finished, but it works and it's a nice variation on other sliding puzzles.

Sleep Consultant by flashkick 2013-08-27T23:40:00

Since the first client causes no damage and there's no penalty for failure, stealing is a bit exploitable and then I powered up insanely and murdered everyone, haha. Never mind the balance though - it's a funny and original idea, great entry overall. :)

Candy Grab! by leedo 2013-08-27T15:50:00

There's not much to the gameplay and the time limit in combination with the random spawn times unfortunately makes the game more about luck than skill/speed, but I like the style and the random use of hex amuses me. :)

Time Rolls On by cappelnord 2013-08-28T18:08:00

Lag and such things spoil it a bit, but it's a nice idea and well presented. :)

Seconds-2-Match by ned366 2013-08-27T23:22:00

Doesn't work in Firefox. :/ Tried it in Chrome, it's a simple game but the clean style and speed of the game make it fun.

Escape in 10 Seconds by Manoloko 2013-08-27T23:54:00

Might be a compatibility issue, but in Firefox the seconds lasted about 4 seconds each. :)
