LD29 — Beneath the Surface

Evolve by Overkill 2014-05-03T09:25:00

This game is incredible. I could really feel the sense of fear in the discovery while I was venturing deep into the dark. The controls are not so hard to master and the horrific look of the enemies made the experience much more interesting (and scarier), not to mention the music that indicates approximation of the enemies and the little details like the orb line formation and the protagonist changing color. The lights are gourgeous. Now the downgrades, maybe, there should be a localized respawn system, where we could gather three orbs and maybe save the game with three orbs. Cause the little enemies feel quite frustrated (since there are so many of them and we can't venture them at first without at least gathering six orbs). My firefox is updated but I had issues with sound, had to play it on chrome, no big time. The main character could have more frames in his animation, even though the little blur when we swim is pretty nice. Well, maybe that's it, I played the game more that 15 times, I guess, couldn't manage to finish it. But I will finish it. Solid entry. Great teamwork.

Crustacean Farm by LandoSystems 2014-05-01T07:52:00

Damn, took me 10 days to win this. Very unique game, the theming is very well used in this one. I liked the fact that it would slowly get harder as time progresses and I wasn't sure if it would end. Great idea, great gameplay, good graphics. Congrats. And it uses LibGDX \O/

Glassie by rincewind_cz 2014-05-03T10:20:00

I liked the way this game sort of recycles the idea of the rotating world to control the character, we could think this is some sort of pinball type of game, but oh HELL, HOW FRUSTRATING IT IS, THOSE DAMN ROCKS, BLINKING RESPAWN LIGHTS... jokes aside, really nice game, I sincerely was not able to control myself on this one. My coordination always changes the left and right controls so it took me a little time to get used to it (not your fault, my fault). The lights and the sound are amazing (though I think the music made me little tense throughout the game) and the game idea is solid and straightforward.

An old man and space by BuKaneerz 2014-05-03T09:33:00

My experience with this game was kind of interesting since I always find cool how can some people work 3D on a game jam. I think the game was very promising, but you had no time to make it complete. The overall idea seems nice, it looks extremely friendly (the home whale is awesome) and the graphics are really gorgeous (reminding me of amazing graphics from PS/N64 era), but the game ends up being repetitive after a while. I believe a little bit more polishing on the game design, a nice story telling and side quests will make this game really interesting to play. Nice work.

Duelo by javierecf 2014-05-03T09:52:00

Congratulations on your first game, a very creative one btw. The beneath the surface idea with the double character was nicely thought of, and great use of the Braid engine (I'm assuming it's Braid engine, because the collision detection, walls and stairs are exactly like the game). The controls felt good, sometimes imprecise (on the jumping gap after we turn on the switch), but that happens a lot. Hope you're going to keep going with this game idea, adding more art, music and a story will make it a complete game

Beneath Lights by giordanno92 2014-05-03T10:22:00

Thanks for the reviews so far everyone, I'm putting down everything your writing to increase my experience.
@ricewind_cz Well, it's easier to finish my game than yours, I guarantee that XD Keep going, your goal is the white light

ECHO THE DOGEFIN RESCUES FLIGHT MH371 by matt_j 2014-05-03T10:34:00

What an awesome little game! Such jokes, much comic sans, wow. Great solid fun entry to play, getting Echo to become Doge is an awesome idea. It took me only one failure to understand the mechanics and two more plays to finish the game on normal. Solid controls, nice graphics, nice dificulty range, great music and sound effects, wow. One of the nicest entries I've ever seen

William the Wopol by chipcaramel 2014-05-01T06:51:00

Great entry. Your teamwork was great for this game. I love the simple, yet effective art and the water controls were almost flawless. The walking control on ground is pretty frustrating even with the sprint button and those damn sharks! XD Well, it has to have some challenging. I could nitpick several things, but this is a game jam. Overall, great entry and thanks for commenting on my game. BTW, found a glitch: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/?p=358588 I think this guy shouldn't be here, right?

LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

The Silent Rage of The Chicken Throwing Crow Masked Man by giordanno92 2015-04-21T11:02:00

@Horsed You need the latest JRE, I used 1.8 to develop this one.

The Silent Rage of The Chicken Throwing Crow Masked Man by giordanno92 2015-04-22T00:05:00

@amimanegra Thanks for the comment, it's nice to use Java even though it's frustrating that some users are taken back because of its internal and public problems. But we do our best
@ChuiGum Yeah, I liked this idea so now I probably won't ever need to code an editor again, just polish this one, thanks!

The Rock the Paper and the Scissors by BIZM 2015-04-22T06:48:00

Loved the game! I liked the way the music fits with the cowboys movements! The game is absolutely intuitive.
Loved the idea and the general application.
The art is unquestionable, from the animations until the effect that the sun causes when it reaches the plateaus, and by the way, this west ambientation really attracts me!
Even the tittle is genial! I personally love The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Congratulations again for all the team, you really reached it!
Totaly five stars!

LD35 — Shapeshift

Shape Jumper by muumeroinen 2016-04-21T03:14:00

Quite literal concept for the jam. Very easy to pick it up and start playing, the music is nice and the SFX are very spot on. It could certainly use a little bit more art and visual effects to enrich the experience. I noticed the effect of the ghost from the other shape, I wished there was more of it.

RETRO MIAMI BEAT by giordanno92 2016-04-20T02:49:00

@blinry, I answered you on your page, just update your JRE to version 8 and you're good to go.

@Archimagus Thanks (I guess XD), a lot of effort went into making the beat cool enough to handle the repetitions.

@zondarg Yeah, I noticed a bug that was not letting the player get very far, I am working on a way to fix it. It should handle 7 mistakes made by the player. Also the final notes are practically impossible to beat, so I might rearrange that too. Thank you for playing.

Shapeshift by suurin 2016-04-22T04:56:00

One of my highest rated games in this LD. I simply loved the feeling of moving inside the tunnel and, as I did with my rhythm game, you decided to work with changes on basic shapes. I loved the audio and the minimalist graphics. If only the gameplay was synchronized with the music, it would've been perfect. Top notch entry!

Listen and Shift by Goutye 2016-04-20T20:56:00

Really nice tiny game. Some words were hard to expect (like "Cat" after the shapes), but didn't decrease the game quality. Fun concept to be playing around. As others have mentioned, it took me awhile to realize I had to wait the beep, but that's ok. Good job!
PS: Nice Kanade avatar!

Dice Delve by lanestp 2016-04-21T02:34:00

Interesting concept. Could have used a little more variation, but it's interesting. I think I last quite long before I died, haha, but that's fine, I guess. And even though there's a lack of sound effects, I appreciated your effort into putting live music onto the game, I know it's not easy to do so (I was thinking of putting a live guitar on mine...). Good job and keep experimenting!

Barber Blues by Tijn 2016-04-22T04:14:00

The mechanics were really creative and the art and sfx were super fun. At our first customer, we won something over $300, but we had spent more than that to get the haircut correct. When we tried to play faster, we were only getting less than $60, maybe we're not meant to have a barber shop :/ The audio is SUPERB! The music and the SFX are amazing, for two days you set a whole new bar. One of the funniest entries I've rated. Amazing job!

Hedron Collider by ProgrammerSteve 2016-04-22T04:30:00

Wow, so many rhythm games on this jam haha. This was quite a nice idea, I didn't get that I was supposed to actually follow the main checkpoint color we hit at first, but then I figured it out. The graphics are very very pretty and the audio follows well with the game. I don't see where the theme of shapshift enters in this one, but overall, nice work.
Oh... And I've made a rhythm game myself, our gameplay idea was somewhat similar, except for one detail, check it out ◕‿↼

Run Rainbow Run by djosef 2016-04-22T03:52:00

Nice idea you got there. I know it's very simple and straightforward, although it has some bugs (like coins appearing at the bottom, impossible to catch) it doesn't affect how the game plays and it is indeed fun to play for quite some time ^>^ There's little about the theme, I saw my character turn into a small helicopter and expected to actually fly or glide, but I just jumped ლ,ᔑ•ﺪ͟͠•ᔐ.ლ but that's ok too. The graphics are nice and fun, the font for the score number could match the game style. The music and SFX are reeeally sweet, I liked them a lot. Nice entry you got there! I hope the criticism helps and keep making more games! ◕‿↼

PacShifter by jcmonkey 2016-04-22T03:28:00

I really enjoyed playing this. Was expecting for it to be a little longer. The difficulty level was on spot and it was very simple to understand. I think removing the acceleration from the body of Pac would made it more intuitive to control, I don't know, just guessing XD Good job! Also, thanks for commenting and rating my game.

Escape from the Dungeon of Snor by Weeping Rupee 2016-04-24T19:41:00

I've only played few games of this genre, so it was very hard for me to get through the game. This entry is very complete. Also, thanks for commenting on my entry.

SPELLDOWN! by pixelpotions 2016-04-21T02:39:00

Nice game you got there! It's practically impossible with the touchpad, do-able with the mouse and masterful with a tablet XD The art is very well done, although little variation, and wished there was audio, it would've increased a lot the imersion. The idea also brought me back to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for the PC XD Good job, Gabriel and Sparrow! Cheering for your entry!

ShapeShifter by Tackwin 2016-04-24T19:00:00

Quite hard game and another rhythm game I've found, just like I did :D The gameplay is very nice, requiring a few trial and error to memorize the shapes and numbers (even though it appears on the side of the incoming shape, it happens too fast). The game's incredibly similar to mine except I've opted working on just two shapes. Nice work!

You're a Floor Lamp Now by blinry 2016-04-20T02:42:00

Nice little game. On my second attempt, I've finished it in a minute! It took me about ten minutes on the first try oh randomness XD Anyway, it could use some tiny jazz music or maybe a cute small lullaby to improve the game, the sfx was funny though. I was expecting being able to shapeshift inside the game, but I guess we can say you were inside the theme. And I see you commented on my game about an error, update your JRE (Java) to version 1.8 and try again. I'm waiting for your review over there. You can get more instructions on my itch.io DL page. Thanks!

Green Box Game by knason 2016-04-24T19:55:00

Nice idea, it could really have used some more time on more levels and variations, sfx, etc... But quite nice what you assembled in 3.5h

Shipshift Pronto by KhaoTom 2016-04-24T17:14:00

Interesting tackle on the shapeshifting theme. I liked the transitions of the characters, although I wasn't able to defeat or dodge the cubes at the beginning XD Cool concept!

Super Shape Maze by Archimagus 2016-04-19T00:19:00

Straightforward and classic idea! I simply just loved the small details on the texture of the board. The stained glass and etc. The gameplay is fair and well implemented. Too bad there was no audio. But that's ok. Thanks for commenting and rating my game.

Polarity Dragon by zondarg 2016-04-19T16:16:00

Nice idea. A very good first LD entry. It took me a while to realize I could move up and down. I've been meaning to make a game with this retro 3D feeling for a long time. Anyway I thought that maybe adding a boss battle (just one) and another type of enemy would have improved this game. Thank you for playing and rating my game too, I'm working on getting rid of some bugs that I've found and prevented people from finishing the game.

NeoTrap by omarhuseynov011 2016-04-20T17:41:00

Very nice entry! Loved the colors and it plays very smoothly in the browser. Also, cool compilation of music. too bad we can't vote for audio, nice job anyway! I also made a rhythm game for compo with one original music, but only 2D. I would like to hear something from you, will ya!

LD37 — One room

The Bloodbath by Aster0id2000 2016-12-14T20:17:00

I liked your game. Pretty easy to understand, controls respond well and a lot of replayability's contained within it. Some critiques to improve it: I would have just added some temporary invincibility to the player after he got hit, lowered the health and increased the chance for the healthpack enemy to spawn. The gameplay's really cool and has some potential for extra work post jam. And thanks for rating and commenting on my game!

Javascript Battle Bots by asemahle 2016-12-28T17:34:00

It's an interesting concept you got here. I just couldn't get pass the second arena because I wasn't able to make my robot turn or move at all. I liked the idea, but the leaning curve in game is too high and only programmers will be able to do something with it. If you worked on a tutorial level that could explain how to do simple stuff( like shooting and moving) it would certainly increase the public for your game!

Rocambolli by eri0o 2016-12-15T22:39:00

Really cool concept to be able to see the entire game while we're playing one level. Although it is a basic platformer, it could have some core elements improved. I played the updated version and saw that you fixed a few things, but increasing the player's hitbox and making the gravity more floaty alone would perhaps turn it into a better game. The level design is good, it could be better. A checkpoint system where you could pick it up and risk yourself to save the progress would be an interesting idea, but seeing how short the game is, I can see where you were heading. Also, good showcase of your JS engine! I'm hoping to use it soon! Thanks for the support and ideas on my game as well. Good Luck!

Trash Mario by ionprodan 2016-12-22T00:06:00

Lol. I don't really know what to say, just feel.

Tangent by rxi 2016-12-22T00:49:00

Awesome game! Loved how everything just flowed and I was able to just sort of mindlessly run through this great and intuitive level design. The sound design was great, the music was awesome and the graphics were very consistent and charming! A couple of critiques would be to respawn faster, fixed jump height could almost ruin the game if it was longer or relied a lot on platforming precision and the character slided too much horizontally. Sort of feels like nitpicking, it does not bring your game down, but these small things could certainly improve the whole experience. One of the best entries I've played. Good luck!

Callisto by zenmumbler 2016-12-28T18:24:00

Really cool entry, dude! I love puzzle games and although this wasn't the most difficult puzzle ever, I still struggled with figuring out the pattern. Too bad we only got one puzzle. The graphics were really nice. The game loaded super fast. And the audio design was superb. Turn this into a longer game with some sinister background story, I'd buy it! BTW, I managed to glitch the game and looked from the outside. Funniest part was I couldn't get back and had to refresh the page, haha. Good luck!

One passage room by Dyn 2016-12-28T17:52:00

It's a pretty nice entry you got here. It didn't take too long for me to understand what I should do and the progression was cool. Unfortunately the game froze twice on the browser and crashed the Windows PC I'm on right now. So I had to stop playing it, too bad because it was a promising entry. The music and SFX were well made and fit the game very well.

One Room Hotel by NightShadow0 2016-12-19T22:57:00

Neat little game! It made me feel a little bad having to kick my guests when someone new came, but it's a nice tackle on the theme. The music was pretty and the characters portrait made me see their personalities through the text. Some improvements on the GUI and a little more variation of things and the possibility of seeing someone new coming could've changed the way we viewed the game. Nice one!

OneRoomGuild.org by hitchh1k3r 2016-12-28T20:22:00

Very interesting idea you had with the theme. It was super fun to see the our students talking about what they manage to make and all. The music is very nice, reminds me of a game I used to play called ShadowFlare. The graphics are fun and quite effective, the crafting system is nice too. Very cool entry!

Farm To Freedom by Crafting4U 2016-12-19T22:40:00

Cool insight on the cookie cliker minus the click type of game. If you focused more on the progression of the game and used more basic graphics (like geographic shapes or more basic pixel art) it would probably be better. The music is nice, helped with the flow of the game. The screen resolution was absurdly high for a windowed mode and some of the text got cut on my monitor (1366x768). It has potential to be a web game with mobile friendliness with the right amount of care.

Lost in pandation by deepnight 2016-12-16T23:12:00

One of the coolest entries as usual. I don't have too much to critique except for the time it took for me to figure out things, but learning was part of the game, so it was great. Overall, nice job!

A Matter of Time by giordanno92 2016-12-15T02:01:00

Fixed! If it does not load, just go to the itch.io link! Thanks!

Walkie Talkie by managore 2016-12-28T19:58:00

By far the coolest and most original entry on this LD! I liked the details and we can get pretty much lost in just creating and replaying levels. The fact that you play levels made by others just enhance the experience by a ton! I just can't wait to show this to my friends. Since I'm not rating audio, I won't judge the lack of it, but the platforming is my major problem with this game. It would be pretty obvious that people would make levels that will use precision platforming, yet the character is not precise since he carries a little bit of momentum as we let go the running button. I think that making him more responsive would be far better to the entire experience. That's pretty much it. I loved the game and will be making some more levels for it whenever I'm bored or something like that. I'm betting on this entry to win.

Vaultum by SkullPixel 2016-12-15T17:21:00

Very nice idea, but it could've used some more variation to the robots when it comes to speed, the amount of enemies per screen and how many times the bullets bounce, e.g. it could start with one bounce, then two bounces, up to three bounces. It took me a while to realize that we move on a grid (not too long though) and the reason it took me quite some time is because of how slow the main character transitions between grid cells. If you'd make it change lanes as fast as the reaction time of the player it would have improved the game by a ton! The art style although simple is effective and the music/sfx are pretty cool. I've found a little exploit on the game which made me get as many points as I wanted easily by just standing on the top and shooting the robots on sight: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bx0c3z7vuchURVNoc1ljQjFsSmM

Monk VS Demons by Mod_k4 2016-12-17T21:49:00

Pretty straightforward entry for this simple game. Graphics and music are normal, nothing too fancy.

The One Room Experiment by Siegfried Croes 2016-12-17T20:38:00

Very creative take for the One Room theme. A nice homage to the dungeon crawler genre and intuitive gameplay. The color palette is pretty. The level design was interesting and every jump had its risk. The only downside is the level design which could be a little better. Too bad you didn't find the time for adding some music, but I forgive you. Keep make these creative games!

Spaceman Spim by Avon 2016-12-15T00:49:00

It's a pretty straightforward idea done well. At first I didn't read the instructions here on the site, so I went shooting and slowly killing enemies with my weak gun. The progression is interesting, but we could've just dropped the gun puzzle part since the game didn't make it explicitly necessary to finish it. The idea of limited vision for the enemies is really interesting and you even made it different for different types of enemies, but the bullet range is pretty small which makes it easy to miss a ton of shots, so a weaker gun with bigger bullets and a faster gun with smaller (but bigger than the current ones) would be better. A boss battle while the AI is reparing would add some extra challenge. And I have no idea how I managed to grab the second gun, I know I had to play three times and on the third one I shot something and it exploded. Anyway, good work on this entry, man!

ToyZ by Asghardian 2016-12-17T04:38:00

Nice tackle on the tower defense genre. The room layout made me think a lot about the turret placement so that I didn't waste my resources, which were pretty much scarce after each wave (not to blame, since the room is so small). The voxel graphics and art direction were awesome and the room is really pretty, nice job! Unfortunately the music is not even passable, I had to mute the audio because the progression was too short and boring, to say the least, maybe no music would be better in this case. Good overall entry! And nice to see some BRs in the house! Keep 'em up!
