LD34 — Two Button Controls / Growing

Double Kick Heroes by blackmagic 2015-12-17T04:22:00

Let me borrow the last poster's words: this game is ridiculously awesome! I'm a metal fan and this resonates with me a lot. The songs as amazing, really high quality metal... the riff of the first level is looping in my mind at this moment =)! Have you composed them all in these 3 days only? That'd be quite a feat! I was gonna say "hey, this isn't black metal", but then I got to the last level hehe! Graphics were very good, too, on par with the superb sound work.
Gameplay, though, is where I think your game was a bit flawed. Level 1 had the perfect difficulty in my opinion, where I could keep a rhythm while enjoying the music and the graphics... but even then the left and right shots didn't seem to make any difference - I could beat the whole level by pressing just one of them, and sometimes I wasn't able to hit a zombie with any of them. From level 2 on things just got exponentially too chaotic for me and I smashed the keys hoping for the best, while not being able to pay much attention to the music - which was a sin! (no, I'm not very good at playing Guitar Hero on hard in case you are wondering hehe).

Don't Mess With Totems by winesays 2015-12-16T01:49:00

I Love this!

The artwork is amazing, and it has those little details (like how the camera gently rocks sideways) that add so much character. Skull for game over is also a very clever solution!

As far as gameplay goes, I think you could make things a little more agile. It's not bad at all, but maybe if I could cover a totem-face thing in like two jumps I would be forced to make meaningful decisions more often. Also, I'd test double tapping X to double jump, instead of holding.

Overall, beautiful entry! Good job :3

Agent Hooker by Phoenix849 2015-12-16T21:57:00

What a great use of the 2-button controls! I loved it and finished all the levels, because using the hooks to navigate was just plain fun. I just think the difficulty spiked tremendously on the second cave level and you should work on a smoother transition there.

Acrodog by dvdfu 2015-12-19T21:10:00

I love this, very simple and clear, and it's always nice when an ld game makes me lose half an hour trying for a highscore. would totally play this on mobile too!

5 stars for cute :3

UPSQUID by 01010111 2015-12-16T17:56:00

What a fun game! The 2-button controls work so great that it doesn't even feel like a restriction (this would be a great highscore-chasing mobile game!). Also love the sound effects and Downwell visuals (don't worry, I don't think you'll get sued haha). Collecting the snacks is very satisfying, which is good because you'll be doing this a lot. The only con I'd mention is that the boost wasn't very helpful for me - I always ended up hitting a wall miliseconds after activating it (well, maybe I'm too noob). Overall an amazing job, I enjoyed my time playing it.

Lands of TSR Lore by Christina Antoinette Neofotistou 2015-12-15T19:04:00

Really dig the pixel art and simple sfx and (spooky) music :)

trosor by Ditto 2015-12-16T18:30:00

Oh classic Ditto artstyle, how can we not love it? The art with all its delicious effects is certainly whats stands out here, and the color choice is interesting and unique. The background music sets the mood for the game nicely, but I feel the sound effects could be more satisfying (maybe they are a bit too high pitched), but they're ok. The 2-button mechanics are awesome and work very well, and both the jumping and shooting seems very fine-tuned and polished; and your bizarre choice of buttons works very well, too, how did you get to that??? XD I missed some challenge in the game, though, there could be some enemies for us to fight or some objectives to complete with the possibility of failing/dying somehow - the jumping and shooting feel good so I think there's room for this. Level design could also have some tweaks here and there, as I got stuck in some narrow corridors or corners which kept changing my direction and making me go back (I think that sliding up on the wall when jumping on a corner - without changing your direction - would work very well). An overall very pleasant experience, good job! :)

Bloodlust: Dungeon Of Cowards by Harsay 2016-01-04T19:24:00

Fun game! The mechanics feel good, though I think the attack would feel better if it were a bit wider (sometimes I fail to hit an enemy, but it feels I should have). Could waste some time here if you created some more refined levels. And some music!

How to Build a Lighthouse by Mnemusyne 2015-12-16T17:10:00

Very well designed game guys, the difficulty is at an interesting edge, hard to reach the light but not frustrating to try again (over and over hehe). Very cute art too. Parabéns!

Uni Ika by cinnamonmelonpig 2015-12-19T21:38:00

Really nice job! I just really miss a "game over" screen showing my score. Other than that it's amazing

treadmill by rogueNoodle 2015-12-16T04:24:00

Simple game, but beautifully executed!

Floppy Frog by walaber 2015-12-16T03:36:00

This is extremely fun and creative. However I feel like it deserves some tweaking on game design. I played for about 15 minutes but didn't feel like I was mastering the mechanics at all, and didn't have much luck progressing (stopped at level 2). But all the while I was having a blast "controlling" the little guy. You have something really really promising here :D

Reap by managore 2015-12-16T02:56:00

Didn't get to do much progress, but definitely a game I will be coming back to. The first screen scared me a little with all the combinations cheat-sheet and text, but it ended up being way more friendly when I actually started playing. Elegantly designed as ways :)

Scat Attack by patvanmackelberg 2016-01-04T19:14:00

Really good! A very solid tur... I mean, game! lol
Gameplay was quite fun and I liked the feeling of getting more powerful that I got as I grew bigger and bigger. The scat was much softer than I was expecting... not that I'd mind if it weren't, maybe I'd like it even more if implemented in a humorous way, further exploring your curious story hehe.

Demon Truck by madjackmcmad 2016-01-04T18:49:00

Good game! I liked your implementation of the 2-button theme, with each weapon also replenishing the other one; I think it needs some balancing for it was easy to deplet both bars and it was a bit frustrating to have no way to attack when it happened. Nice graphics and sound, too, though I missed some music in there (probably some good ol' rock 'n roll!). A pity you couldn't put some winning/losing conditions in there, I had some fun with the mechanics for sure.

Super Smash Buttons by ronniepedra 2015-12-16T04:20:00

Beautiful! The whole things just nails it down aesthetically :) The mechanics are really good too

Clouk by pixelpotions 2015-12-16T17:24:00

It's a pity you couldn't finish it - I loved the main character, and the controls are different and work pretty nicely. It feels like having half of a mouse and half of a keyboard traditional controls hehe. At first it seemed that having the character always follow the mouse wasn't a good idea, but then I got used to shooting to make him stop and the controls started to feel much better. Good job!

U.G.O by aamatniekss 2015-12-17T03:24:00

Awesome game! Loved how you kept things interesting and challenging with the different ways of dealing with the different types of enemies and the tongue cooldown on error. The 3rd size got too hard for me (I guess it's the last one, is it?), but I could probably beat it had I been more persistent - maybe I'll try again later. I liked the humor in the intro scene and wished it had been translated into the gameplay, too, somehow. Very good job, man!

Melissa - A Game of Choice by Imagos Softworks 2015-12-18T17:29:00

Amazing, immersive, disturbing experience! An intriguing mood permeates the whole game as you get tiny bits of an unknown story and begin to wonder what kind of terrible thing is happening, and what else has already happened to get to this point - and each possibility that comes to your mind is scarier than the other. Something must have gone so wrong!
Maybe the developers have an answer to all the questions that are left in the game, but maybe not - I have the feeling that all questions are intentionally left there for each person who plays the game come up with their own answers. The subtle hints of the story you get are just enough to make you think a lot and create your own explanations for it all. That's also where the "choice" come in - there's isn't really much of a choice in the game as you have to follow the linear "storyline", but you can choose the explanations. I don't know, I'm just guessing here hehe. Maybe it could also be that the player has no choice, but the "protagonist" had a choice of not proceeding with what he was doing at the various points of the game where you interact with the phone.
Overall, an interesting and very well-crafted experience! Certainly the most unusual of the LD games I've played so far, and I doubt there'll be another one which will top it.

Just Me and Only Me Against The World by adamgryu 2015-12-19T21:24:00

Great job! The whole game looks and feels really nice. I'm yet to test multiplayer, but I can guess it's tons of fun!

Snow World by Elisée and friends 2015-12-16T04:34:00

I knew the art was amazing, but the quality of the game design took me by surprise. Simply put, I'd play hours of this.

Cityblock by Ellian 2015-12-16T04:04:00

Nice! Feedbacks could be a little clearer, maybe more slow paced. I had to play 2 or 3 rounds until I figured out what was happening, but I eventually got the hang of it. My top is 4380. I can see this on mobile too, maybe sliding the city sideways instead of tapping left or right. Very nice game :)

FRUITWOLF by Claw 2015-12-16T21:11:00

The first entry I'm seeing which uses the "growing" theme using quantity instead of size, which was a nice twist in my personal journey of playing some LD games! The game design works pretty well, I had a very good time playing it and would only complain a bit about the pink fruit guys not doing their job very well hehe. Graphics are interesting and give focus to the color of the fruits and enemies, which is what really matters here. Oh and the ending is great, made me chuckle :). One of the best I've played so far, good job!
