Beep Boop. Where will it go? by PapyPilgrim 2013-12-20T05:14:00
nice work. simple concept but cleanly executed.

nice work. simple concept but cleanly executed.
really clever concept! I would love to see this expanded more!
interesting control scheme... a bit hard to get used to. nice technical implementation though!
nice job! fun how the different animal "quests" all sequence together. i ended up falling off the edge of the world before I could finish though :(
welp, the destruction is just wonderful :)
Awesome job! The ending is really fun and funny, and bouncing between the planes, tanks, bullets, and bombs is a really fun time!
from pico-8 forums:
nice job. would be easier to understand if the people had a frame of animation showing them hold up a camera. also something to mix up the game midway through would make it even more fun.
a little difficult to understand the movement mechanics and how they work, perhaps a few more levels that 'ease' you into how it works would help. glad you were able to pull together a submission though!
really creative, fun storytelling through simple platforming :)
really fun! nice job :) The monster is super cute.
fun game, I love math games :)
it's really overwhelming though (although oddly not too difficult since it takes a lot of hits to die and the "panic" button doesn't seem limited in any way).
would have been cool to have health pickups that are subtraction or multiplication problems to add some variety.
really clever idea, and making the player do the main action makes this much stronger than just a liner narrative. great job!
nice work! the camera angle is a bit awkward w/ the cursor keys, but the way you walk around, interact, and especially the visibility code to let you see inside buildings is really nice!
nice entry, I'm a sucker for Papers, Please style gameplay. this was a nice snack-sized version :)
what a great entry, one of my favorites I've played! the graphics and main character are super charming, the little city simulation is amazing as well. great job!
nice start! hopefully you can finish it up after the competition ends.
super job! very hard at first, but slowly you realize all the different strategies you can employ. makes me want to play a few (hundred) more times and really get good at it. really great job!
OS/X build wouldn't work for me. downloaded and un-rar'ed, tried to run the .app, "Office Hours.app couldn't be opened". this is on OS/X 10.10.5
nice work, appealing graphics.
(from pico-8 forums)
really fun, an impressive UI and implementation. performance got so bad it made it nearly impossible to play as things got hectic... please finish it though, it's really cool!
super hard but fun game!
nice work! fun idea and your levels demonstrate the concept well. the undo feature is a nice touch to make the game less frustrating :)
can't seem to get it to run on OX/S 10.10.5 Safari:
"An error occured running the Unity content on this page. See your browser's JavaScript console for more info. The error was:
NotFoundError: DOM IDBDatabase Exception 8: An operation failed because the requested database object could not be found."
aw man, Windows only? I guess I won't be stealing any credit cards tonight :(
fun idea! the store is a cool touch, although it didn't seem like the items really related to increased 'damage' / score.
unfortunately the OS/X version won't run for me. just says "main.app cannot be run". I'm on OS 10.10.5.
really fun, nice job. good writing and a fun twist at the end :)
pretty fun, nice job. a bit tedious at first, but gets more fun as you grow larger.
ran fine on OS/X for me. a bit difficult to control.
this is really fun! nice idea and great execution. the story is a nice touch!
simple and fun!
OS/X build doesn't work for me, it says "the app cannot be opened". I'm on OS/X 10.10.5.
Really cool idea! The mood is great, and overall it puts you in a stressed-out frame of mind as the clock ticks down.
great work!
great progression of discovery to the different mechanics, and the puzzle design (and sequencing) is spot-on! left me wanting more!
wonderful :)
funny!
absolutely fantastic! each element is really fun, lots of cool interactions, and the overall charm is through the roof :)
pretty awesome! pretty big stretch regarding the theme, but the game is charming, fun, and gorgeous!
nice work, the text commentary is the best part :)
nice work could use with some kind of risk or something to give it a bit more depth to encourage you to try a few times.
fun! really nice feel to the smashing :)
nice job! indeed relaxing... although perhaps so relaxing I had a hard time understanding what my input was actually doing :P
Nice job! Impresive that you got some AI in there in such a short time :)
nice idea. since it requires moving objects very small amounts to tweak your solution, it would be nice if the object's didn't "snap" to the center of the mouse, but instead stayed fixed relative to where you click.
nice job! the obstacles are well designed- would probably be more fun with a dedicated speed button, but you did a nice job of working it into the theme.
great job, very interesting control scheme with the limitation of only 2 inputs. fun theme and overall execution.
nice! took a bit to get the hang of the goal of the game and the patterns.
loved the twist, this is one of the reasons I like Ludum Dare- games that seem to be 1 thing and then surprise you as you play them. nice work!
yeah, the monkey bars are pretty much troll central!
the speed of flopping ramps as you hold the buttons, so if you want a soft touch, try tapping the button repeatedly instead of holding down.
really cool! I like how the single world space is broken up into mini challenges based on the vine height. performance was a bit rough on my Mac, in particular the framerate seemed to stutter and drop when jumping and causing the screen to scroll. mad it a bit difficult to pull off some of the jumps.
nice job, seemed a bit intimidating at first but turned out to be quite simple to play. the silly premise is fun, and it's quite well constructed, especially given the short time frame!
really nice job! I like these kind of endless bouncers, and the slowly eroding line of clouds at the bottom really managed the tension nicely. the different powerups were fun too. nice!
awesome entry! great interpretation of (both!) themes, and just overall really well done. I love pico-8 games :)
pretty fun, clever theme and silly enemies. controls felt a bit loose and it was hard to tell if I was killing things or they were harming me.
nice job. the graphics are quite impressive and the gameplay is simple but interesting.
silly, fun, awesome. i like the variety between each character, and the ridiculous premise is just enjoyable.
fantastic! The controls feel great, the simple graphical style is really effective, and the exploration and little bits of story really round it out.
tried to run it on OS/X, but (after enabling permissions to run any apps), double clicking on the icon, nothing happens :(
cool idea! it would help a lot if there was more feedback and sequencing when each hand is played, to make it more clear what's happening.
really nice job! very complete idea for such a short time frame. didn't really get much of the theme in there, but this is a nice game!
interesting idea... although the controls being so indirect make it very difficult to actually control specifically what does in and what stays out. and the asteroids are annoying :)
fun (and funny). silly but enjoyable premise, and the writing and imagery were clever.
interesting idea. very difficult to control!
lovely little Papers-Please-like. some very clever touches that keep you guessing if you're "playing it right".
really fun, nice job! I ended up playing all the way to freedom :)
Nice little game, played fine in WebGL on OS/X Chrome for me.
Fun, simple, nicely done!
safari doesn't like your web certificate, it doesn't want to let me access your page! I downloaded and played the game on Mac, and it was fun! I don't really get how it fits the theme other than I guess any investigation starts from "nothing"?
Regardless, a nice achievement!
awesome idea. it took me a while to realize that the "0" numbers are being appended to the current number. fun and cute!
Very cool! It's a very interesting idea and a great way to make navigating a (relatively short) dialog tree multiple times... it feels like Groundhog Day, in a grid way :)
amazing idea! It's quite the brain teaser once the levels get a bit more complex. I love how the character runs in reverse, it's a great touch :)
nice job. interesting idea.
great idea! I found it very hard to understand where to drop the parts to make them attach to my body... I kept trying to line up visually (like place the shoulder part of an arm perfectly on the arm attachment dot), but I think you needed to place the center of the part on the dot?
Also I got killed a lot at first and it was very hard to realize when I was detached from my toros, and when I wasn't. so in general, a bit more feedback would have improved the experience. when you get a few strong parts, you feel SUPER STRONG though, which was awesome :)
good job!
nice work! pretty big map for just a game jam!
couldn't figure out how to get it to work... playing WebGL in Safari. the intro text line is displayed, but nothing happens after that, despite my best slapping at the keyboard.
I got really confused by the rules... perhaps a bit more feedback about what's happening to make a move illegal would help. Also I agree that the theme interpretation is clever, but the word "nothing" might be making your first level(s) a bit more difficult that ideal.
one of the most fun I've played in the jam! great job!
pretty good! I liked the building element added. When the huge pink dude showed up I was surprised :)
I added a button to the print app that displays the manual direclly (and goes back to the print app when you dismiss it), as well as addressed the "manual's quit button is hard to click" issue. I also added a pop-up when your script has an error, that should help track down issues a bit more.
Thanks all for the feedback so far!
Thanks for the notes, you're right on all of them! especially the "for int I" thing, I'm just too used to C/C# I guess, my hands had a mind of their own :P
updated the in-game documents to properly show the syntax for "for loops".
soooo charming :)
nice one! the intro sequence is very charming and really puts you in the mood of the game. the puzzles later on are interesting as well. good feedback on the systems, everything was very easy to understand.
I like the concept. fits the theme quite well, but is quite confusing at first!
very nice! It was a cool moment when I realized that the old leaves were dying if I didn't keep them watered.
This seems like a cool idea, but (at least on the WebGL version I played) I can't get past level 2. as soon as I split the cell they start falling with gravity, but they pass right through the "walls" I created. is this a bug, or am I doing it wrong?
nice work. I agree that the concept is really cool, and implemented pretty well! I wish I could hold the right mouse and drag over points to suck them all up quickly, I think that would help the pacing. I also agree that goos lost off-screen coming back out of the most recent pipe would help a lot.
nice job!
very cool idea. controls are quite finicky, the game would have been more enjoyable if it was easier to know what you can do and can't... I ended up feeling like I "cheesed" the levels.
nice idea! very well executed too, I appreciated the little pop-ups on the main menu to explain things, and the control reminder, etc. I'm not sure how much the colors mix each time you collide (dose size have an effect?), but it felt pretty intuitive nonetheless.
cool idea. I was confused at first, the bubble that gives new platforms has a sort of 'fire' icon on it, I thought that was something I should avoid at first. After figuring out the rules it was pretty fun. The most exciting part is when you have to make a 'leap of faith' and jump tp the bubble, trusting it will grant a platform below you :)
this was super innovative and unique! Awesome game!
I was very confused with the controls at first, expecting regular car steering controls. it took me several fails to realize the controls switch "lanes" instead of steer directly. I think some clear marking on the road might help communicate that the game is about switching "lanes", instead of traditional racing.
nice job. I sat on the loading screen for far too long, and the controls were mis-labeled... down arrow is brake, not space! the camera is a bit wonky, but after getting used to it I was able to drive a little better.
really interesting concept, and I really like the "math class doodles" visual style. I get stuck once you started getting pushable wrap regions, and had to move on to the next game to rate :P
sooo fun! I will definitely come back to this one! what a simple, great idea!
found it quite confusing for a quick play-through with my kids, but it's a very interesting idea when you have more time to really focus and puzzle through it.
Super fun! we played with my kids on stream and had a blast!
very difficult to select the track sections, which made the otherwise very interesting concept a bit too frustrating to work with.
beautiful work! amazing amount of polish for a jam entry!
nice idea! we got pretty stuck as things got harder though! very clever idea.
great graphics, interesting concept! I wish the pull and push speed was a bit faster! overall the pace felt a little bit slow. nice work!
pretty funny questions put in there keeps the game interesting :) nice music too!
Great job Vimlark! You'd never know you struggled with the concept from the final result! It took me about 8 tries to finally save the Earth :)
couldn't get under ~35. great ending!
I updated the WebGL build, the UI should be working now! framerate might not be great, I'll be uploading an optional windows build shortly (before the jam deadline)
Windows build is up!
there are a few other achievements, you can check them in the pause menu!
@oillen thanks for playing! there is a pause menu in the game (escape key, and various buttons depending on gamepad type), and in there you can confirm all 14 achievements. once all are completed, some text shows up on-screen to let you know you're done :P
really great! the ideal game jam game- clean concept perfectly on theme, an idea that makes you wonder why you haven't seen a game like it before, and very well-crafted too. Would love to see this expanded into a full release with some more variety and elements added in.
really fun! played this with my kids on stream, and my 8yo loved it!
great idea! at first it wasn't clear how the past cooks would work, but it turned out hilarious!
lel
Very interesting concept! the mouse click controls feel a bit awkward. I wish there was an option for a keyboard button to swap orbits!
very nice work! perhaps a little repetitive, but really fun!
nice idea, and the puzzles were interesting and challenging!
Well-known concept, but the execution was really great! Nice levels and graphics,
nice work! very easy to get lost! we will be coming back to this one!
GREAT idea! played with my son on stream (me on mouse, him on keyboard). super fun! wish there were more levels!
great work! the audio really makes it fun to loop many times.
nice work! the graphics are beautiful, and the powerups feel POWERFUL!
nice! some of those jumps are HAAAARD
I was a bit confused, but an amazing concept with interesting controls.
This was really great! One of my favorites so far. the control scheme was a bit confusing, but the style of the screen layout, and the logic of the puzzles was really fun to think through. I'd love to play a longer, expanded version of this idea.
great concept, fantastic! head-scratching indeed, but super clever. will definitely come back to this one!
nice idea. the comic images at the start are very nice! the game is very buggy though, I had a lot of trouble dying.
nice idea! i was dragging them specifically into their slots, and was frustrated that something I wanted to place in slot 3 was snapping into slot 2, eventually I realized it's much better to deliver them in order from left to right, and then the "snapping" feels generous and helpful.
nice and well made! the controls felt a bit clunky to me, mostly it felt like after stopping steering I couldn't predict which way the car would finally end up pointing, which made things a bit frustrating.
fantastic game, amazing you made this in such a short time. really nice! I was able to solve the case on my first try. Definitely left me wanting a longer case to solve!
nice work. I couldn't get the game to play on WebGL, the "Play" button was greyed out. Windows download worked tho. The speed of the bullets and the rate of fire felt really slow in comparison to my overpowered modern fighter jet :D
nice variation on tetris that incorporated the theme well! It's super hard, and the finer rules around what happens when you run out of time / the phase switches were a bit confusing, but would probably become more clear over repeated play.
nice entry overall! could probably benefit from a bit more explanation about what each machine does, some are obvious, others not so much.
Interesting concept! Nice work, definitely something you could expand on after the jam.
nice entry! clever, simple concept. Music was a bit repetitive, but that's sort of to be expected :) Definitely agree the counter should be counting down not up to slightly over 10 seconds.
Very cool concept, and impressive amount of content (even a tutorial!) for a compo entry. great job! If you update this in the future, some improvement to the UX (being able to easily drag and reposition entries on the timeline, having a palette to pull from instead of using the mouse wheel) would be some nice improvements.
really nice job! of course the art is really impressive for a jam game, but I was happy to see the puzzle mechanics were really fun and interesting too! overall fantastic job! Only complaint is that the animations need to handle interruptions better so that you can play quickly. I would get different results if I played fast vs slow (as in die sometimes with the exact same moves). Didn't detract from the experience much tho. great work!
This theme was tailor made for a wario-ware style game. This is the first one I've seen to give feedback for, and it's really well done! I liked the variety of the games. I really struggled with the controls for the archery game, never quite figured out how it wanted me to use the mouse.
I'm not sure if I was doing something wrong, but the arrow keys and space didn't seem to do anything at all. well, up arrow / W key caused my character to jump, but that's it. tried everything I could think of, but nothing. :(
really, really solid entry! the feeling of speed is great, and the obstacles ramp up just enough to be interesting throughout. I really liked the "flip" move, it added a lot to what would otherwise be just simple left/right dodging. Great graphics and sound as well!
really nice entry! simple but satisfying concept, and it feels good to get better. My only request would be to refine the drag and drop a bit so that it's more reliable (let's you slam the cursor into the corners and always accept that location, speed up the tween/spring on the movement, etc) under pressure.
Really beautiful entry! The 2nd pattern was really difficult and took me waaaay to long to pass it, but I was glad I did because then I was able to finish the game, and it was a really nice experience. The music/audio is amazing!
An interesting concept. I liked some of the bullet patterns. I found it very difficult to see the bullets in many cases because they are so similar in color to the background. A bit clearer feedback on when you're taking damage and you're not might help! Also I tried shooting the enemies but it didn't seem to do anything? maybe I was missing something.
welp, this was awesome.
nice simple entry, congrats on finally entering a game in LD! Even such a simple concept with a high score can be quite addicting.
nice work. I found it frustrating when I would get caught up on corners and there wasn't any "sliding" behavior to help me slide around and continue on. 10 seconds never felt to short! Nice interpretation of the theme.
I like the sherical world, it makes searching harder because you have so much less visibility. I'm not sure I see the "every 10 seconds" theme in here at all, but perhaps you focused on other things.
had the same OpenAL issue, then noticed the download link in the readme :)
super great! sometimes simple is best. the band-aids were a nice touch! I would have intuitively preferred for the steering to auto-center, but I see why you implemented it the way you did, and I think it makes sense overall.
lovely! at first I thought I wouldn't like just clicking on idle vehicles and everything else was automated, because I assumed I'd rather "direct" which containers are stored where / which ones are delivered to each waiting truck (kind of the inverse of the current control scheme)... but in practice after playing a bit, your design turned out to offer more agency than I anticipated. It is really soothing and addictive to play!
I couldn't find the 6th box on day 3 and I feel like that means I missed getting further into the game where it seemed like some spooky elements would present themselves. The physics-based carrying is pretty nice but could use a bit of tuning to make it snappier and less frustrating to use. Very impressive entry overall!
what a simple, great concept! it took me a while to realize that the shooter was turning into what the next shot would be. perhaps a slight bounce when it transitions would help draw the eye there and make that a bit more evident. super engaging to play, great work!
fun idea, nice music and simple visuals. overall I found the difficulty ramp to be waaaaay to slow to keep my attention. I imagine this gets much more fun with the timing is a bit tighter, but I couldn't hang around long enough to get there. I was looking for signs that things were speeding up after each truck, but didn't see much.
simple idea, always a good choice when you're learning something new! keep it up!
fun idea, very difficult to control! accelerating and braking were near-instant, but the turning was super slow in comparison. a little tuning on the car controls would have improved this a lot!
very nice idea and execution! took me some trial and error at first to work out what order to do things in. I think some icons on the meters on the left would help a lot, so players can more easily understand what each meter represents and therefore what to focus on.
really nice job! although a simple premise, it is very well put together, especially the art and sounds, but also the movement and input is really solid and responsive as well. good job!
really great idea, a very interesting constraint to force the player to think about perspective (literally). the feedback in-game was pretty confusing to me, having objects be red outside the viewfinder but blue inside the viewfinder made understanding the rules needlessly confusing IMO. with a bit more refinement, guidance, this is a great concept for a larger game!
excellent entry, which is no surprise of course. the main mechanic is super interesting and this served as a great initial exploration of the possibilities. very, very well done!
congrats on finishing your first project in the Jam category!
very cool interpretation of the theme! aiming with the mouse is a bit frustrating because of the small viewpoint combined with the moving window. I think perhaps a simpler aiming and shooting mechanism would have helped. I frequently ran out of ammo... perhaps there were ammo pickups I didn't find/understand?
fun concept. the difficulty ramping is pretty extreme, which sucks some of the fun out of it I think. even a simple concept can be engaging with good tuning! congrats on finishing your first jam! the cat spirits are very cute :)
great interpretation of the theme, and fun combination of dragging/stacking and driving mechanics. the wobbly wheels are very funny :)
lovely entry! a simple concept well executed, just the right length as well.
fun idea, congrats on finishing a game for the jam, that's a big accomplishment! As already mentioned, a bit more feedback to players on what the stats are doing and affecting, and what trade-offs you are making with each update would go a long way to make it more engaging and enjoyable to play.
super high quality entry! some of the vocab was confusing (I didn't know what the word was referring to), not sure how much that was an intended part of the puzzle or not. very impressive!
This is a really interesting puzzle mechanic! familiar and fresh at the same time. The graphics made it a bit difficult to discern what is interactable and what isn't. Would love to see this expanded into a more complete game in the future!
