LD45 — Start with nothing

HEI$T by pataya 2019-10-10T15:07:53Z

Like the others said - very well polished game. I really like the cartoonish graphics and there is a lot of fun robbing the bank. The first several times I really laughed hard ^^ The only problem I have is that it does not fit the theme well enough. Awesome game though!

Super Goat Life by Olivier argentieri 2019-10-11T10:43:51Z

Really enjoyed the graphics :) Like others said, maybe it should have been more fast paced and maybe the puzzles had to be more innovative but in any case, very well polished game. Keep the good work

Under A Microscope by Sopata 2019-10-11T10:20:57Z

Hello, I cannot seem to reproduce the problem you have. I downloaded the UnderAMicroscope.zip file. Then I extracted it and ran "LudumDareJam45.exe". Can you provide more information about your issue?

Under A Microscope by Sopata 2019-10-11T10:33:37Z

Okay, for the sake of simplicity, I made a WebGL release and uploaded it to itch.io. Keep in mind though, it has reduced graphics and lighting.

Under A Microscope by Sopata 2019-10-14T19:30:08Z

@walaber and @xakkar, thanks for playing my game. It means a lot to me!

@walaber I think if your PC is a bit slow it happens sometimes. I don't know why but on the desktop version it runs fine. Also can you specify the browser you used to test? I tested it only with Chrome.

@xakkar I think this happens if you try to divide a cell too close to a wall or too close to one another. I can provide an updated version which resolves this bug, but I am not sure if it is against the rules of the JAM.

Don`t Sleep by Plepletier 2022-04-20T13:44:22Z

Super cool game - very polished as well. I liked the core theme and idea - it is really hard to stay awake in some of them corporate meetings

I kind of wanted to have a bit more time before getting infested with sheep - maybe it can be a bit more balanced so you get the chance to play a bit more and build a bit more before dying.

All in all, I think your team did a great job!

The Cold Night by Steffo 2022-04-21T13:23:19Z

I agree with the others - this was a nice take on the theme. Maybe the powerups could be a bit more visible and I would have liked the snowman spawns to be a bit more balanced to have a learning curve (just like in Icy Tower - you don't go to the fastest stage in the first 20 seconds).

Apart from that - I really liked the aesthetics and the mood - good job! GOOD LUCK!

Back2Work by radmccool 2022-04-21T13:32:17Z

Great game - I find the VFX quite good and the whole mood is properly set. It was quite hard getting used to aiming with the keyboard - mouse support is definitely something to implement for your next games (if you decide to go Top-Down again).

I respect the fact that you are an one-man-army so I boosted my scores a bit :)

Anya's Valley by nardandas 2022-04-07T22:49:20Z

A cute-looking game. Even though I am not super big on these types of games and it took me some tries to understand what I have to do and how the interactions work - I had a fun time playing. Keep up the good work :v:

[HTML5/WebGL] Be the Inevitable by leorid 2022-04-21T13:13:43Z

I enjoyed the game and all the weapons had their own flavor. The shotgun was really impactful and satisfying - good job.

I am not 100% sure I like the twist that I was the inevitable but I have not played any other LDJ50 game that has this twist so it was Unique, at least for me :)

GOOD LUCK!

The Scraps of Victory by Donitz 2022-04-07T22:23:54Z

Super cute game. I don't have any negative feedback, really :)

MegaSpiker by Copito 2022-04-21T13:02:18Z

I really liked the intense feeling of being chased and I tried strafing as much as possible  I respect the fact that you've implemented this without too much engine code - it is quite impressive - also navmeshes are hard, man.

I think it fits the theme perfectly. I probably would want to have an indicator how far away are the monsters behind me and adding a little ambient sound (royalty-free) would really spice things up and make the game much more intense.

Good job!

Aster Defense by emrod 2022-04-20T20:09:52Z

I really liked the concept and I find the game to be an interesting take on Tower Defense. As others stated - you should work a bit on balancing and continuously raising the difficulty. It seems most players survive forever on their second try which, unfortunately, conflicts with the theme.

Nevertheless, I like the visuals and the ambiance. This asteroids destruction echo is spot on - super satisfying!

Hymenoptera King by Skleembof 2022-04-20T19:48:35Z

I was super surprised to see so many systems integrated into the game! I like the atmosphere and the world you've built. Sometimes a lot of hornets decide randomly to land and I can insta-lose even with only 2 WEIGHT  I would have also liked if I start with zero weight and I am kind of able to see what makes the weight go up because sometimes it was a bit unclear - maybe a warning sign can be added at the places where you currently need to take action. Anyways, for a one-man-army this submition is super impressive :)

I'm on a boat - Anxiety Simulator by Sopata 2022-04-05T12:00:16Z

Hey @badcop I am sorry you experienced stucks. I fixed the problem and I uploaded a new build. Would you mind trying the game once more and update your scores accordingly :v:

I'm on a boat - Anxiety Simulator by Sopata 2022-04-07T09:50:16Z

Thanks, @initialposition and @haayaargh for playing the game! I fixed the collision problems and expanded the accepted range for enabling activities. Now the game is much more enjoyable - thanks to your feedback! :v:

I'm on a boat - Anxiety Simulator by Sopata 2022-04-10T18:39:58Z

Sorry to all the commenters for the late reply - I was off for a few days.

@skleembof - At the final stage of the game (around 2:30), something breaks every 3.5 seconds (either a crate or a pump). So you can just fix a pump and if it happens that these 3.5 seconds just passed, it can break again looking like a bug. That usually happens if all other pumps are broken as well  . Probably this is a bad game design and I need to ensure that after you fix something it does not break for 10 secs for example but I wanted to emphasize the LDJ theme and to plant the feeling of inevitable sinking in the player's head.

@alexsolonnikovp4 - The game is intended to be played by 1 person so it feels more unique. As others commented, the game is pretty fun in Co-op as well. But it can get a bit easy since it is balanced for 1 person only. Maybe we can add a Co-op mode but I fear it will remind the players of Overcooked in some sense.

@ugly-robot - I've heard of that SteamVR issue and it is weird that it happens only for certain people. Do you have a VR set and libraries installed? Thanks for reporting the problem. I've researched a bit and found out that you have to specifically disable some VR plugins in UE4 if you don't want it to attempt to start your packaged game in VR. #justUEthings

@ugly-robot & @lazy-fox - Glad you enjoyed the game and found that hidden Titanic sequence (not mentioned in the rules). We kind of wanted to achieve that shocker moment - having something super out-of-place and funny but at the same time slows the game, gives some breathing space, and lets you look at your ship and prioritize what needs to be fixed first.

And finally, for all of you and the rest of the commenters, I will definitely make time to try out your games and leave insightful and honest comments

I'm on a boat - Anxiety Simulator by Sopata 2022-04-21T15:31:14Z

Glad that you liked the game! Always good to hear that people find the Titanic sequence quite funny - we kept it a secret so you are expected to be caught by surprise  As I stated in one of my previous comments - we wanted to have something super out-of-place and funny but at the same time slow the game, give some breathing space, and let the players look at the ship and prioritize what needs to be fixed first.

It is good that people reported the Steam VR problem - I will disable these plugins in my future jam entries. I will have to check how things are organized while packaging in UE5, though, as this will probably be my last UE4 submission

The Inevitable Dominion by Kupnu4 2022-04-07T21:26:18Z

I really dig the art style and the atmosphere. As previous reviewers stated - I haven't played a game where I feel so stressed but I only have to press one button - was a super cool experience. I would have liked to have some boosters to be able to bypass one or two times the most intense moments when the random generator spawns too much enemies at once. Anyways - this is just a game jam and the game is solid the way it is :v: Keep up the good work!

Super Mowser Bros by Guilloteam 2022-04-21T12:44:15Z

I think this is one of the most polished games in terms of UI/Graphics and I really liked the concept.

Only drawback - as others stated - the original version is quite easy and practically you can survive for eternity which, unfortunately, conflicts with the theme.

Good LUCK!

Erefos by exopunk 2022-04-07T20:48:12Z

Obviously a very polished and awesome-looking game. The mood and graphics were spot-on. The only lacking elements to me are **innovation** and **theme**. I would have liked it much more if the game was unbeatable and procedurally generated. That would have been a solid 5. Nevertheless - super solid entry! Keep up the good work and I wish all the best to your studio guys!

To Build A Fire by ugly_robot 2022-04-20T21:25:16Z

Interesting concept - haven't played a lot of games from the genre and I think there are not a lot so I find it innovative! Yes, it is weird and wonky but it kind of feels right. Big ups for the effort, such a gem.

Dads don't die by kremlebot 2022-04-21T09:06:45Z

Super polished and overall an amazing experience! I see a lot of work done here and you've managed to deliver an emotional piece of art. I only wished to be able to play the chess for a bit more

Great job guys!

Chasin' Dreams by AnimalX 2022-04-20T21:16:58Z

I liked the concept and the game kept me interested. Some of the collisions need fixing but that is normal for Game Jam games. I like that it fits the theme and the spawn of coins seems fair. I was able to last around 4 minutes, maybe the developers can share their highscore

HANG UP! by Jesse J. Jones 2022-04-07T22:01:31Z

I like the aesthetics and the humor. I think you guys did an amazing job. I would have liked if there were some booster to get you out of the danger zone one or two times before you actually fail. Nevertheless, a solid entry for this LDJ :)

Culmination by Arsen 2022-04-20T20:25:14Z

I like the atmosphere - didn't think it will get that spooky for a top-down game  The screen flash was a bit intense and the UI was a bit wonky but I overall enjoyed the experience. Nice take on the theme, as well - I thought I escaped but actually ... (no I won't spoil the games for others  )

Overall, a solid jam entry!

Reactor Meltdown (The Simpsons) by AdamJN 2022-04-21T14:06:13Z

Quoting @bjornstahl > The difficulty curve was a bit steep, it should be possible for a new player to be slow and experiment with the first few panels but here if you did not know exactly what to do with ever panel as the popped up you would loose.

Exactly what I was about to write. Everything else is super-cool. Good job man!

PS: I almost lasted more than a minute my last try (if I remember correctly). Wonder what is your highscore

Leaf the Ghost behind by BiOs3008 2022-04-20T13:59:51Z

Overall a cute game and kind of reminded me of Icy Tower in terms of music and visuals

A few notes though Given my experience in making 2.5D platformers (around 2 years), I can say there are some problems: - You should not slow down the character on landing - this breaks the flow (especially when someone is chasing you). Think of Sonic or Ori or any other successful platformer out there - You should spend a lot of time working on collisions - extend a bit the collision of each platform so the player can jump even after leaving the platform by a few pixels. This helps the player feel more skilled/accomplished

The thing that chases you should have a well-defined shape to know when exactly it will get you. Your big sprite was a bit misleading. Afterwards, I found out that it does not matter - the only thing that matters was the time, which made it quite okay.

Nevertheless, I think your game is finished, well polishe, and has good art. I enjoyed playing it :)

The Ultimate Martian Roulette by HaaYaargh 2022-04-07T22:12:10Z

I totally lost it when the guy in front of me shot himself and started glitching on the floor rolling in a sitting position endlessly. A solid entry for this LDJ!

Dawn of the Karen by BougieBirdie 2022-04-21T13:48:49Z

You definitely get 5/5 for humor and mood. I also think the difficulty is quite spot on. The game got me hooked and I tried several times which is a good sign.

I have only one remark - the playable screen is actually 1.4? times bigger than what you can see. That adds a bit of randomness if an enemy will spawn off-screen and directly destroy you. In a game where you die from one hit - this is a bit tricky.

All in all, I think you guys did a great job!

Dawn of the Karen by BougieBirdie 2022-04-21T15:22:06Z

Hey there! Thanks for this meta info about the infinite arena - it is quite interesting. I think I have a solution for the problem with the boundaries: - Have an SFX/VFX that makes it clear that Karens stopped spawning - After that Cue, you will know that you can safely go outside boundaries. If you decide to do it while Karens are spawaning - it is your gamble

It is not solving everything but it: - Preserves the "high-risk for a reward" scenario that you were aiming for - Makes the game a much more fair

Dawn of the Karen by BougieBirdie 2022-04-21T15:50:57Z

You know what people say - two game designers are better than one (kiddnig, there is no such saying  ). Actually, sometimes it is even worse but this time around I guess was a good thing :joy:

GOOD LUCK with the SCORES!
