Tetris XD

mr-deku 2022-10-04 17:47

Nice turn of events! Clean art style and curious idea! Maybe with a little more time between stages, it would be even more enjoyable.

oadt 2022-10-05 08:22

Can't wait to see some professional tetris players to play this game  Fully utilizing the mechanic exceeds my mental horizon, but I noticed that you can also build smaller blocks, so that helped. It was sometimes a bit confusing when a block got placed because the timer run out, maybe some additional feedback (like letting the block blink 3 sec before timer ends or something like that) would be useful there.

walaber 2022-10-05 23:36

nice variation on tetris that incorporated the theme well! It's super hard, and the finer rules around what happens when you run out of time / the phase switches were a bit confusing, but would probably become more clear over repeated play.

puyo 2022-10-05 23:39

This is such a good idea. One of my favourites. I'm so bad at it, but enjoyed myself. As above, would love to see someone good play this!

Really good use of the theme, but could be tuned even better in the future experimenting with the time available. Well done!

danield 2022-10-05 23:39

Oh man, I am so bad at regular tetris but this was fun! I think the core concept is really really good and you could probably make a killer app off it. I liked the way it looked and the colour scheme, and the music was fun too.

googlefrog 2022-10-06 01:07

Nice! Very hectic so it took me a little while to figure out what was going on. I would have like a bit more leniency in rotating the large block and maybe it would have been neat to have the player build up a deck of large blocks that they keep using. My best score was 1335.

daveco 2022-10-06 02:05

Thanks for the feedback so far! We totally agree it's a bit too hard, partially due to UI clarity and a lack of animations which we ran out of time to finish. For the future we have ideas to rework the UI and tweak the difficulty so it's not as tied to the theme of every 10 seconds haha.

ideaspersecond 2022-10-07 07:51

Interesting take on Tetris, almost like Tetris: Big Picture Mode! Nicely done!

hare-software 2022-10-07 13:05

Took me a long time to figure it out but I wanted to figure it out, which is a really good sign. It is an interesting way to add another layer to Tetris which I really appreciate, well done!

midna 2022-10-08 14:50

Great concept. i´ve always been bad at tetris but this was enjoyable :) Great work!

simon-rahnasto 2022-10-09 13:40

I would love to see someone who is great at Tetris play this (It took me a couple of tries just to manage to clear a few rows ), I feel like this has great potential!

Had a blast though, and I like the visuals & music; it's all cohesive and create a nice atmosphere! Like @danield said, it would make a great app!

annika 2022-10-10 14:08

Wow, cool idea! I got a little impatient sometimes with the screen changing all the time but I am quite happy with my end result :)

joror 2022-10-10 18:41

Pretty wild concept, chaos! Building new blocks!

It was hard to 'play well', but it has promise!

durkagames 2022-10-10 22:40

Absolutely love with the tetris.

harrison-gowland 2022-10-10 23:25

I like this! This is a really interesting take on like, tetris lol. The music and sound design is also really good - I like the tonal shift when you go from one screen to another

animawish 2022-10-11 02:36

This is a pretty funny idea, and you did a good job with it. Impressive on its own to come up with a unique take on Tetris in the year 2022  Nice work!

deprecat 2022-10-11 03:09

Even reading the description I wasn't prepared for that first switch, but it's a pleasant surprise! A cool twist on familiar mechanics.

I noticed you mentioned that you've added animations to the timer which I do find nice but I would recommend experimenting with the placement of that timer. I found that it was too high up and my eyes are focused on the bottom of the screen trying to find the best placement, so I didn't even see the timer until my second playthrough. You have lots of space under the high score menu (which I'd argue is less pressing information than your time left) and it may be better suited there. But that's something you can playtest to confirm if players find it better.

Otherwise you have a really solid spin on traditional Tetris that I think people would really enjoy! Great work

Your v1.1 definitely seems like a violation of the Jam rules, btw. You're only supposed to do bug fixes, not feature updates. If you do feature updates, you should provide them as a separate link from the Jam version of the game. Didn't rate your game because of it.

adecon 2022-10-11 09:40

Over this comment has is anonymous comment. I am annoyed by people who, under the guise of anonymity, express their dissatisfaction. Instead of following the rules of the jam, focus on developing your own game. Oh yes, you're anonymous... If you care so much about breaking the rules, then tell me what are the consequences for breaking the rules? Don't stop people from creating a jam atmosphere and enjoying the end product.

Now about the game. I've been a bad Tetris player since childhood, ever since Dr. Mario, but I liked the idea. It diversified the mechanics, but I didn’t have enough time :)

n-n 2022-10-11 09:52

Wow! Interesting realization of tetris. Although the game was difficult for me, I liked it 😌

digital-bacon 2022-10-11 11:15

Nice evolution of Tetris, great work!

daveco 2022-10-11 13:27

@Anonymous We appreciate you letting us know. It was not our intent to circumvent the rules. The original Windows build we submitted is now on the page.

We hope others will still be able to enjoy the quality-of-life improvements in v1.1 that are all based on the awesome feedback we received so far!

2022-10-11 18:32

Thanks for uploading v1.0! Will check it out and rate your game!

@adecon The consequences can be disqualification from the final rankings, at the discretion of the LD organizers. This is a competition after all, and the space for free-form iteration on a casual entry is the Extra category. Post-jam builds are encouraged and loved, but they should be clearly marked as such to not get in the way of the competitive integrity of Ludum Dare.

eezabra 2022-10-12 04:52

I suck at tetris! especially on top of building custom blocks!!! But the visuals look good, sounds are good, overall a fun game! I just suck at tetris ;c

yoko-san 2022-10-13 11:37

If you've been used to the old Tetris since you were a kid, your game is a real brain twister!

But I really like the concept! I will definitely play this game more often! :)

cobrajs 2022-10-13 14:01

Phew, excellent concept, but I'm definitely not smart enough for it!! Loved the visuals and the changing of the soundtrack between modes. Well done!

ominusgalaxy44 2022-10-13 21:02

cool game :) just a bit too dificult

pietrek 2022-10-13 21:05

An interesting concept, but a bit too complicated for me. It was still fun though.

bqq 2022-10-14 11:08

Cool concept, amazing how many takes on Tetris people are able to come up with! Love the interplay between the two formats. About the design, I think it might be possible to circumvent the big blocks by just playing super slow, but I might be missing something about scoring or so (?), also using mouse was too weird for me so I just let the big blocks stay in the order they were created. But those aside I had a really good time, the game got me good when I realized that the big blocks don't fall apart on an edge but stay as one big chunk :D Also great WebGL template, love seeing people pay attention to that!

honey-pony 2022-10-15 05:46

I am certainly not very good at Tetris so I don't expect to be able to get very far in this game. But, I do find it a lot of fun to try to strategize where there are "holes," so to speak, in my current board, and to try to fill them in with my next block. It's a neat exercise, as there's also rotations to think about. I find myself often thinking of the pieces being flipped over when I will insert them... which has not worked out very well for me so far. But I have managed to clear a couple lines -- I have gotten 1485 points.

I think it's neat that the line clears count even while building the block. That was somewhat unexpected, but also can lead to some interesting "big blocks."

I think that really trying to strategize is where this game becomes lots of fun. Desperately trying to count columns from the left and the right, looking for matching spots, finding an opportunity for a row clear that happens to line up with the current chaos... it's fun even though I am bad at Tetris. I think that's great.

papaver 2022-10-15 20:55

Cool game with interesting mechanics! I had quite some fun with it. But it was quite hard as well. ;) Since the blocks were so big, I wasn't always able to rotate them, which was a pity. Also, sometimes I wished the blocks would spawn higher/above in the level, because with a very long block, I was game over while I had still room to place it.

Frequently I was gameover, without seeing what happened. Maybe it would be nice to see the tower that you made in the background. Some more feedback of when the timer is running out would be nice.

The graphics are nice and clean, and the music fits nicely. Since you opted out for music, I think you didn't create it yourselves. Could you perhaps add some credits in your description?

I played quite a few times, this was my highscore (I played the original version):

shaunshepherd 2022-10-17 00:24

Really interesting idea! Such a cool spatial puzzle!

Would be nice if the big bloc had a grid overlay so it would be easier to judge where the current blocks will fit in.

Great work would love to see this fleshed out into a bigger project.

yetanother 2022-10-19 02:28

I was confused at first, but once i got the mechanic it was fun and interesting! I am very good at Tetris but I was bad at this lol

almost 2022-10-19 23:47

Could you rename the link to the itch page to clarify that it is the 1.1 version? The downloads are nicely labeled but I wasn't sure whether or not the itch link was to the original version.

The idea of building a chunk and then adding the chunk as a single block to a persistent "main" scene is kind of neat. The fact that you create multiple chunks before placing them confused me as it seemed like it made things more complicated without really changing how I play. I never wanted to reorder them, and I always wished I could just place my big chunk right away.

I had a hard time counting to compare distances between the current board and The Big Block board. The grid that you added in the postjam version probably helps a lot on that front. In addition to the 1x1 grid, it might be nice if the middle vertical gridline was marked in bold, or that I could measure distances like "1 to the right of the center" instead of "4 from the right edge".

I often ran out of time without realizing how low the timer was. It might have been nice to have an audio clip play as the clock gets low, or maybe to put the timer at the bottom of the screen so that it is closer to where I am looking. I also think that I often ran out when trying to use S to move my block downwards faster, as it takes 2+ seconds even when holding S down. Given the 10 second time limit, I would like to be able to drop to the bottom with S in around half a second.

One relatively minor thing is that sometimes when a block or chunk was near the edge of the board it wouldn't let me rotate it.

Other than miscounting distances, I had fun and think it is a neat twist that changes how you think about the game. I really like that you can rotate your chunks as you are adding them, so you can assemble a big chunk with a specific shape on top and then rotate it 180 before placing it in the main scene so that it fits perfectly.

bobridze 2022-10-20 12:13

An interesting improvement to Tetris. I find the music when changing the window too harsh. In general, I liked everything.
