Good game!

I like it

karlipoppins 2019-10-07 02:48

@lomt1k thanks!

walaber 2019-10-07 02:57

safari doesn't like your web certificate, it doesn't want to let me access your page! I downloaded and played the game on Mac, and it was fun! I don't really get how it fits the theme other than I guess any investigation starts from "nothing"?

Regardless, a nice achievement!

ixchow 2019-10-07 03:10

Hmm, similar experience with the certificate here; ended up manually changing to an [http:// link](http://nicolasbize.com/LD45/).

Also, gosh that cursor brings back memories.

appix 2019-10-07 03:13

good music and arts I like this detective game.

bootygangdisciple 2019-10-07 03:25

Very well done my boy! The music was great. The whole detective idea was super creative and well put together. It was challenging and exciting throughout the entire game. The only flaw that I could spot out was that while walking you could easily click on objects causing you to stop and see dialogue while trying to run past it. All in all, fantastic job! :)

bobothegreat 2019-10-07 03:25

I have to say, that was such an awesome game. First of all the amount of detail that you put into the whole thing is incredible! Almost everything is intractable and you can tell that a lot of hard work and attention to detail was put into this. There was a good amount of humor which made the game a lot of fun to read and play through. Plus the music you had went so well with the detective mystery theme you were going for. I only had to use the guide once to figure out how to get the envelope, but besides that it had a really good progression and a good amount of challenge. Really well done (esp bc compo) :)

karlipoppins 2019-10-07 04:43

@walaber @ixchow thanks for the info, I must have mistyped the URL :\

@bootygangdisciple yeah that was on my todo-list and I didn't get enough time to fix it. Note that you can also use A and D to move to make this a bit easier. Thanks for the feedback!

@bobothegreat thank you so much, super glad you liked it :)

justinooncx 2019-10-07 05:03

Yay, managed to beat it without using the walkthrough! If someone can figure out the puzzle by themselves, you know you're set! The main challenge in this game, really, is figuring out what's what... I'm a fan of the 8-bit aesthetic, but in a game like this where details matter, it might be best to go with another style. All in all, a nice point and click adventure with interesting solutions that aren't TOO far-fetched! Well done~

karlipoppins 2019-10-07 05:19

@justinooncx congrats! I'm super happy to see it's beatable. I tend to always make my games too hard...

I completely agree with your statement, pixel art isn't really the best option for point/click adventures. I unfortunately only learned the lesson throughout the jam and it was too late to go back... Lesson learned though! :) Thanks for playing!

tasakasama 2019-10-07 15:16

I have a little trouble with this kind of pixel art a little big but clearly well done for the idea and the realization ... With a more definite design it would have been great

karlipoppins 2019-10-07 17:43

@tasakasama yeah I wish I was a better artist to make those pixels smaller :) Thanks for playing!

frenchie 2019-10-08 04:09

Awesome game! I'm surprised you were able to create that much content in such a short amount of time! I got stuck a couple of times, so I'm glad you had that walkthrough handy  Well done!

generalbeans 2019-10-08 06:20

Wow! So much content in a small amount of time! I am pretty sure I just got done playing a full blown point 'n click adventure! I definitely wouldn't be sad to see more of this! Nice work! Solid all around. Felt like the real thing! Coulda fooled me! Thanks!

eranot 2019-10-09 00:42

I liked it, but had to see the walkthrough to finish haha. I feel like the pixel art could use more pixels so it would be easier to recognize the things, like de photo and letter.

locomule 2019-10-09 03:59

I think that was the best I've seen so far. Very inspiring, I finished too :)

heartclaw 2019-10-09 04:14

Pulling off such a good quest game must be hard. It's a really well done and clever game. Special thanks to the writer(s), I laughed quite a bit at different comments of the character. A lot of stuff to explore and the music sets just the right tone. 5/5 very good job, loved it!

thevideogamester 2019-10-09 05:11

Is that a office reference I spot? Pretty fun. Nostalgia here we come

karlipoppins 2019-10-09 05:15

@eranot for sure :) thanks for playing!

@locomule glad you liked it!!

@heartclaw Thanks!! I'm glad it didn't turn out too cheesy :)

@thevideogamester It is :) good catch!

jnsoff 2019-10-09 08:49

Good Job!!!

daniiln 2019-10-09 09:31

Great detective, but I'm sorry that I don't like 8-bit graphics)

amastryukov 2019-10-09 11:44

This is really good, especially for a compo game. The amount of thought, content and polish that went into this is incredible. Exceptionally well done.

The only thing I didn't find great was the fact that everything felt disconnected - there was seemingly no connection between the clues - why would the sewers have the code? Why did I need to go to the fortune teller to get a crystal ball? Things like this I would have never figured out on my own, but thankfully you had a guide which basically alleviated any of the issues I've had with that. This did not affect the score I gave because this is not an expectation of a LD game, especially not a compo, but if you plan on making any more detective games in the future then definitely pay some thought into how the clues are going to be connected.

I can't immediately see how it fits the theme (other than the fact that you have nothing in your inventory) but everything else is absolutely on point. Fantastic work!

karlipoppins 2019-10-09 15:53

@daniiln that's ok I'm a terrible artist :)

@amastryukov that's an awesome feedback! The answer is quite simple, the scope of the game was reduced by a factor of 3 Midway towards the comp as I realized I didn't have enough time! If you look at the Time lapse you'll see that I had a very logical and elaborate storyline planned out within the first few hours of the jam. Then at the middle of the second/last day I still hadn't started on the inventory and only had 3 rooms done, so I had to take a bunch of shortcuts for the user to get/use the objects... The theme is mostly around the fact that for the investigation you start with no clue and have to figure out the murder mystery. Not a great use of the theme but I wanted to try this new genre for this LD and couldn't think of anything better.

Thanks for playing!!

jake-marks 2019-10-09 16:19

Thanks for the help in the playthrough! I wish we had more time when we played it. Awesome humor and nostalgia. Here's the VOD of the playthrough for anyone interested.

maxdmg 2019-10-09 18:21

That is a ton of art assets for 48 hours, the sheer amount is impressive. I also really appreciate you can walk with either keyboard or mouse, that shows some great attention to user control. Noire with point and click is always a great combo. My main critique is just that sometimes dialogue and descriptions could get pretty clunky when just trying to walk around, accidentally starting a text box would bog down my movement which was a little irritating. Other than that great puzzles and good game!

karlipoppins 2019-10-09 19:13

@jake-marks thanks for playing, it was super fun to watch you guys go through it :)

@maxdmg yeah the very low resolution definitely made it easier to draw things, and unfortunately the hitboxes were not pixel-perfect so it came with some drawbacks. I'm definitely not a great pixel-artist and it was the most time-consuming item (see timelapse). Thanks for playing, happy you enjoyed it!

shrapx 2019-10-10 01:37

I agree with Amastryukov above in that the puzzles seem disconnected to me. Though i rarely saw sense in the puzzles of most full point and click puzzles. I could get past that due to the world being small enough that i could try just about everything. A whole point and click adventure is impressive for the compo!

adamcyounis 2019-10-10 04:47

Thanks for making this! So much depth for an LD game, I was impressed by how functional the navigation and hit areas were. Maybe a little bit too much depth to hold my interest at this scale of presentation, but with some help I got there in the end. I really liked the concept for the shredder puzzle, though clicking to select instead of dragging made it a bit fiddly. Still, good fun! thanks again.

trusty 2019-10-10 07:17

Was a fun story to play. It seemed like I got stuck inside the shredded paper puzzle and wasn't able to exit to look around some more. The audio really fit the game. Nice job.

stasm 2019-10-10 14:54

Great music and a really polished gameplay, well done. The art direction is very nice too, although a bit too colorful to call it noir, perhaps? The pixel art is very nice but it got in the way a bit, especially in the inventory where I had some trouble recognizing the items I picked up. It also didn't occur to me at first that I could combine objects in the inventory and I had to look at the solution posted here. Some puzzles required the good old click-on-everything-and-hope-for-the-best method, but I consider this a tribute to the classics like Gobliiins and Indiana Jones games :)

karlipoppins 2019-10-10 16:18

@stasm oh wow I've never met someone else wHo had played coktel vision's gobliiins series before!! (It was fairly big in Europe but quite unknown in the US). I just loved those games so much alongside the amazing titles from Lucas Arts. Thanks for playing!

thecritterscove 2019-10-11 13:14

Very well fleshed out game for a compo! It was fun going through the mystery, and I especially liked putting the shredded paper back together. The music is very suitable. The graphics are a little rough in places, but it's not a bad overall look.

There's a few things that could be improved. I believe others have mentioned this, but the walking and item hitbox can be wonky at times. I also initially missed the paper shredder puzzle, as I thought the description was all there was to it. Another thing that could help, is mentioning that you can combine items. Didn't realize that was an option til I looked at the hints.

Otherwise though, this is a really solid game. Definitely one of the more complete ones I've played this LD. Great job!

alexrose 2019-10-12 00:59

lol this game is the funniest I played this jam. The ladder bit was a bit contrived or needed a graphic style where I could actually see it was a ladder, or maybe it needed more saturation or something to show that it wasn't part of the background, but because you were in the stream that was no problem. Lots of fun little puzzles, good dialogue, good graphic style, nice animation, solid entry.

eugsun 2019-10-14 01:21

The amount of content you were able to come up with and squeeze into the 48 hours is very inspiring to say the least. I chuckled a lot while clicking my way at everything through the game. Thanks for making my Sunday night!

amerigo-gazaway 2019-10-16 07:38

Wow great and writing and storytelling/design. Super funny and well thought out.

aurel 2019-10-20 06:42

That was very cool - it's incredible how rich the world is that you created in 48 hours! I did have to look at the walkthrough at one point, because I didn't realize you could combine objects together. The game was cute, funny, and very enjoyable.

bungalow 2019-10-21 09:58

Wow, this game was hilarious, had cute art and had so much content! Awesome job, best of luck!

dcrdro 2019-10-21 11:52

Cool athmospheric game, with good pixel art and sounds. Nice story and humor! Good job!

bonevolt 2019-10-21 18:18

I like the humor

hiroboto 2019-10-22 07:29

lol the scripting is nice! kinda like it

philarmon 2019-10-22 07:44

How the heck did you managed to do all this in 48 hours? I really like the stale and the small details. Well done!

sibi 2019-10-22 08:15

What a great game, especially for the compo! The graphics were lovely and the music fits the mood very well. The controls were a bit finicky unfortunately and I had to look up the walkthrough sometimes because I didn't notice some things which were interactable (like the ladder). Would be great to get some more hints inside the game like being able to examine your inventory. Still an overall strong entry!

vilja 2019-10-24 02:42

It is just awesome to create such a story for compo! The design is interesting and the music sounds very good.

mateusboga 2019-10-25 11:40

Very cool game! I had to use the walkthrough because I just suck at point and clicks lol, nice job!

mikropiru 2019-10-26 11:57

Funniest of all the LD45 games I've played so far! The idea, style and that humor brought back many memories of the adventure games I played as a kid. Also loved the music as it really fit the mood.

commanderstitch 2019-10-27 05:44

I played this for a VERY long time trying to solve all the puzzles. After hours of working on it i became stumped. I needed a clue. I started going through the solutions to see what part of the puzzle I had missed. I missed showing the photo to the bartender! After that one hint, I was able to finish the rest of the game unaided! Cool stuff. It's impressive that this was done in 48 hours. The only thing that was kinda annoying was the flickering and not being able to click on things. (where the player wouldn't exactly stand but wiggle back and forth in place) I noticed the 'stain' area with an eyeball on the death bed and linked the code with the other bed in my head as to that being the reason the eyeball shows up on it, but doesn't do anything. :-) Great stuff!

brokenmirrormedia 2019-10-29 05:52

This is really impressive, especially given the fact it's a compo submission. I really liked the music, really put me in that noire detective mood, and the gameplay felt pretty good. I did get stuck in a few spots, so I really appreciated the walkthrough lol. One thing I noticed was that sometimes the character would start flipping directions very rapidly if I clicked on the same spot twice or something like that but that was the only real glitch I noticed. Great work!
