LD39 — Running out of Power

Recapitate by superpokeunicorn 2017-08-02T05:10:14Z

Very well made game. I thoroughly enjoyed myself playing through the whole thing. The physics were fun and the slight indirect control you had over your flying head gave the game a nice amount of nuance.

One of my favourite games so far, great job!

Raw'b Out by Atmög 2017-08-01T12:30:05Z

Definitely some potentially strong elements like the mapping and weapon progression but the shooting is just a bit inaccurate and the hitboxes are much bigger than the bullets themselves making it kind of annoying to attack enemies. Also while the combat sensitive music is a nice effect the transition is just a bit too jarring.

I do appreciate the amount of content you put in though.

Running Out Of Tiles by BORB 2017-08-01T13:47:27Z

Very solid little concept and I actually found myself laughing out loud a few times.

The concept is nicely adaptable and can definitely be take further.

I did find the controls a little fiddly but that's not a big deal in the scheme of things.

Had a great time playing it.

UFO Abduction by dreadloaf 2017-08-01T14:10:35Z

I found it quite interesting the way all the different types of objects interacted with you in multiple ways, id the turrets attack you and upgrading you with their scrap, and the way you interacted with all the different enemies using the same mechanic.

I did feel like the abduction mechanic was a bit stale as you couldn't move or interact while doing it, I understand that was probably a balancing choice but it made the game feel a bit sluggish to me.

Very nice concept and some lovely interacting mechanics.

Spacy adventure by egordorichev 2017-08-03T09:06:16Z

Super smooth, hard hitting game. Definitely a nice challenge and very fun too.

Sometimes the screen shake made it a bit hard to keep track of what was going on but I feel like that just added to the experience.

Great little game and on pico 8 none the less.

Bead on the moon by Hishicorne 2017-08-02T06:11:56Z

Definitely great art, lots of fun conversing with customers.

I did find the recipe making kind of tedious and a bit uncertain, but it could be easily improved with proper pacing like starting with few and adding more ingredients over time or some other kind of learning system.

JouleThief: Charge Your Phone by kroltan 2017-08-01T01:47:53Z

I love the theme of the game, great interpretation of the prompt.

The controls did feel very floaty but that really created the challenge of the game, learning how to wrangle your slippery character was quite a challenge. However I just found it a bit too slippery to be enjoyable.

Still great premise, lovely animations, sweet music.

Power City by TheWGBbroz 2017-08-02T12:10:31Z

Definitely a very strong core to the game and a lot of neatly interacting elements.

I feel like the buildings could have benefited from a popup tooltip to help explain each of the buildings but it was kind of fun to discover them myself.

A bit more polishing and this could be a great game.

Recharged by EX3D0 2017-08-02T04:37:52Z

Fairly simple but definitely fun for the short time I played it.

Upgrades were nice but I just felt like everything was out of my control, like I couldn't do anything to survive because the batteries spawned to slowly. I mean obviously you want the game to end at some point but I don't think that was the right way to do it.

Loved the voices, music and sounds, definitely quite solid for what it is.

Gradient Descent by Zelos 2017-08-01T02:37:47Z

Incredible experience, lovely music, stunning visuals, engaging story and I really appreciated the ending.

The gameplay was a bit simplistic but that definitely didn't detract from the experience.

Great job!

Electro Swing by Sauski 2017-08-02T13:01:50Z

Very nice looking game, some lovely visual effects and sweet music too. There were a couple of jarring transitions between levels and the camera wasn't particularly smooth but those can all be ironed out with more time.

I did enjoy the main weapon being melee, but it was quite difficult to use the dash against the shielded enemies. Still the variety in attacks was nice.

Also very nice pun in the title.

Dark Lab Escape by sgstair 2017-08-01T13:26:08Z

Sweet effects with a solid core gameplay. I loved the mathematical implications of the game.

I did find that the laser was a bit slow going out but I do understand that if it was too fast then it would very quickly get out of hand. Also the controls were a bit floaty and kind of hard to be precise.

Solid bit of fun and a level editor on top is very well done.

Run, Joseph, run by Alexandr AndroidDev 2017-08-01T13:03:07Z

Very cute graphics and music and a lovely little premise.

I do think the game suffered from a lack of feedback, like knowing you needed money to pay for your cat food or that you needed the worms to fish. I don't think it should outright tell you but I do think you could at least hint that in some way.

I played it all the way through and enjoyed it.

Charge by ohmaigawd 2017-08-02T06:49:14Z

Very well made game and with a surprising amount of depth, trying to minimise the amount of time on the ground so the blocks don't disappear but doing so means your closer to the falling blocks that instakill you, also trying to keep towers from gaining too much height so it doesn't restrict your field size.

A great theme as well with sweet graphics and music, very well made all around.

Also I got 166

Power Hungry Robot by Edmanbosch 2017-08-02T05:18:12Z

Nice little game, enjoyed myself the whole way though. Had some interesting elements like your battery level carrying over to the next level which made optimising the early levels more important.

Solid effort

Battery Low by Freedom Is Slavery 2017-08-02T05:25:39Z

Took me a while to work out you had to go down to submit the phones for points but once I did it was quite fun. Definitely quite a challenging balancing act of recognising and matching up phone types.

Fading Points by SMILEY_4_ 2017-08-01T12:05:20Z

Very simple graphics style to compliment and focus on the puzzle aspect of the game.

I would have appreciated some animation of the movement of the enemies but otherwise a challenging, strategic, solid little game.

They Attack At Night by randomphantom 2017-08-02T11:19:12Z

Great visuals and mood, I really liked how the lights in the town reflected your current power.

I did find the main combat loop fairly basic but there were some interesting elements like turning buildings into turrets.

I did like how distinct the enemies were from the environment, really made them pop.

Scrapjunk Couriers by reBTF 2017-08-07T15:51:05Z

@maakep it was made in Game Maker Studio with most of the assets made in Photoshop and brought into Game Maker.

I guess the code itself is the built in GML but because of the short timeframe it's very hacky and not particularly versatile.

M. O. P. S. by DaniilGaponov 2017-08-01T12:40:29Z

Brilliant graphics and atmospheric sound, lovely theme, I just felt like there wasn't really any game to it. Building as many buildings as you couldn't didn't really have a down side and I didn't feel like the buildings were unique enough to warrant being separate.

Still this is the type of thing where with some more time I could have been exponentially better, but again, incredible atmosphere for such a short time.

Fruitful Campaigning by otiv 2017-08-01T13:55:33Z

Very nice theme, great visuals, just darn lovely to look at and very nice music.

I did however feel like the actual gameplay left a lot to be desired. It seemed like my actions weren't having much affect except for the OP banana.

With an actual tutorial I reckon this game could go very far, great job!

The Floor Isn't Lava by InappropriateName 2017-08-02T06:33:29Z

This was actually a lot more fun than I initially expected it to be, at first I thought it was just a simple platformer but I got really into it and thoroughly enjoyed it, and it had a nice little narrative to it too.

A couple of collision issues but that definitely didn't detract from the experience.

The Dying of the Light by Winterslice 2017-08-02T07:19:05Z

This was a great little experience, I liked the art style of the solid colour surfaces and a great use of a weenie (the big ice tower) to focus the player towards the goal.

I definitely enjoyed the way the game striped away your fighting abilities as you progressed but I did emphasis one problem I had with the game in that you could just spam your basic attack to easily win the fights. But I guess to combat wasn't the point of the game.

Good little story hinting at deeper elements and a great world surrounding it, well done!

Pura The Robot by Ramkey 2017-08-02T04:51:59Z

Definitely had some great positives, good job basing most of the game around the single puzzle mechanic, it was fun to see how it was adapted to different puzzle. The narrator was definitely very well written and a very welcome feature, sometimes I found he would talk over himself but not that big a deal.

I did find the fireball dodging was a bit frustrating, the hitboxes were just a bit iffy and to me it felt a bit out of place compared to the rest of the game.

Definitely enjoyed my time playing it.

Super Charged by Manumeq 2017-08-01T12:51:35Z

Very impressive graphics and effects and I can tell that the gameplay has definite merit. However I found that trying to progress slowly and carefully was much less successful than just spamming the button.

I think with a bit of balancing and some kind of penalty for spamming would make it a solid game.

Robo Blackout Ultra Havoc! by Endok 2017-08-01T02:17:25Z

Took me a little while to work out you press E to toggle doors and weapons and stuff but once I did I could really see what this game was trying to do. I was fun to try to balance your power usage but turning off the systems you weren't using, definitely a promising mechanic.

I did however find the camera movement and shooting quite jarring, it made it difficult to aim and didn't feel particularly nice.

Still, a nice theme with some promising mechanics.

Fleeting powers by Stracker 2017-08-02T07:06:20Z

The strength of the game was definitely the elemental powers and they were done very well. I definitely liked the single use nature of them and that promoted quite a conservative play style where you let enemies build up and take out as many as you can with minimal powers used.

I feel like the game could have benefited from different enemy types and challenges to emphasise the powers but obviously that wouldn't have been the main focus on such a limited scope.

I definitely feel like a bigger game could be built around the concept of the single use powers, great job!

Not Politically Correct by Jaggent-aka-shouke 2017-08-01T01:26:52Z

This was a fun interpretation of the prompt, I played through the whole thing and while it was a little bit click spammy I definitely enjoyed it.

It was quite a brutal start, I died in like 5 seconds before I worked out what was going on but once I did it wasn't too hard to solve.

Very nice art style and I love all the little elements like Birb.

LD45 — Start with nothing

Paint Rush by Ekilibr 2019-10-16T06:31:14Z

Very satisfying combat and it was a lot of fun to launch the enemies at each other and ad the walls.

I had a weird issue where I couldn't attack unless I didn't move for like 3 seconds. I'm not sure if I missed some mechanic but it didn't seem to be happening at first.

Great visuals, punchy sound effects, I definitely enjoyed my experience.

Minigod by JackLeHamster 2019-10-13T23:30:20Z

I found it quite enjoyable. Obviously it was a bit convoluted and I found it laggy at points but the core concept was really interesting. Teaching your creatures to eat and spread and evolve was a fun twist on a strategy/management game.

Great job!

Nobody's Journey by Phyro 2019-10-17T06:34:14Z

I had a great time with the game. I loved the concept of adding cards to your deck being your health but also being another option.

I wasn't quite sure about the reveal and depart effects, sometimes they didn't seem to go off so there must have been some rule I missed.

Beautiful graphics, very juicy, I would put a lot of time into a full mobile release of this.

I Don't Think That's Math by ratly 2019-10-08T09:42:59Z

I love the idea, great concept, but it was just too hard. I really tried and just could not do even the second challenge. It definitely could have done with some easier levels to ease in the difficulty and teach the player some of the mecahnics.

Very funny concept through, I love it!

edit: Just saw the answer in the screenshot. Haha I gotta pay more attention.

Unlock Everything by DDRKirbyISQ 2019-10-16T00:33:18Z

I was impressed by the organic tutorial. It very much lent itself to teaching you each mechanic (and button) very cleanly.

Obviously amazing music and strong, stylistic visuals. Great job!

VELOCE by torfi 2019-10-17T23:04:39Z

Very strong aesthetic with the graphics, effects and music.

I found it frustrating at first when "upgrading" your weapon would make it worse but it was much more interesting when I thought about it from the perspective of each upgrade being a different level that you have to try to beat.

I will admit I eventually stopped because I found it quite frustrating but I did get 12 which I'm quite happy with . I also really like the level based scoring instead of kills or green things collected.

Survivor Slots by PeachTreeOath 2019-10-08T08:40:02Z

I love this game. Escaped on the 10th day.

Very well designed, great pacing, interesting decisions.

It was very engaging to refine the slots and to build up characters as you go.

Ah, I'm just very impressed with the game. I would love to see more, like more options to influence the slots and more scenarios. Great job!

Love Letter by MoonAgent 2019-10-08T06:35:25Z

I enjoyed the strategy of planning out each of your shots however it felt like I wasn't really in control.

The spikes were a bit too unforgiving and the low friction made it difficult to stop where I wanted to.

I liked the ball catcher and the mechanic where spikes retract/extend when you bounce off a wall.

The Nothings by Stefanie Leitch 2019-10-13T11:05:58Z

Lovely little adventure with some cute characters.

I had an issue where I got hit in combat after I'd already won then I couldn't move once I was out of combat.

Very impressive, fully featured jam game. The different songs really helped set distinct tones for different parts of the game.

You Gotta Be Kitten Me by Silas Reinagel 2019-10-08T10:39:26Z

The laser was super satisfying to use but I found the cool down annoyingly long. I just wanted to use if more often!

The controls were a little wonky but I was starting to enjoy it by the end.

Good music, cool effects, solid game.

A Merchant's Adventure by sharbelfs 2019-10-15T06:10:13Z

I enjoyed the aesthetic and theme, had a bit of fun with the resource management and pushing my luck.

I feel like it got quickly to a point where I was just relying on random chance for what the next card drawn was.

HEI$T by pataya 2019-10-16T23:21:26Z

Incredibly juicy and clean but it felt undirected and mellowed out quickly.

I loved the text popping, the crunchy sound effects, the bouciness of the characters, great polish.

On the clicker side of things there was no depth. The numbers were too big to mean anything, there was no inderesting decisions, it just felt like a vessel for the juice.

The Song of Calirum by Blizary 2019-10-14T23:29:11Z

Incredibly well done game. Really engaging, appropriate difficulty, lovely theme.

I feel like it could have been a bit more directed, like I wasn't really sure what I was trying to do. Of course that could be a design decision as well because it did add to the mysticism of it all.

I also found the coloured circles a bit hard to connect to the resource. I eventual equated the colour to the resource but perhaps an icon or even the lovely art on the card could go in the little circle to make it easier to parse.

There's a bug where you click on the card multiple times and keep getting the reward for every click.

Very well polished, lovely animations, great card art. Just a lovely game all around.

You Lose. Good Day, Sir. by Carraka 2019-10-17T06:16:51Z

Beautifully made game. Some of the words did seem a bit arbitrary but it was actually quite touching in the end.

I loved the couple of times the rules established by the game were stretched. Firstly when the fin popped up but it was yellow so you could click on it. Secondly when all the text was yellow. Such great moments of gameplay reflecting the story.

This is seriously one of the top games of the jam for me. Great job!

Start with nothing by rubyleehs 2019-10-12T13:01:07Z

Very innovative idea and well executed.

I did find it a little frustrating at points but when I came at it from the perspective of what objects look like letters it was a lot more interesting.

Beat it with 198 words. I was not gonna stop until I was done!

Froog by reBTF 2019-10-14T03:46:33Z

@marcel-oyuela-bonzani Fog of war frogger, that's exactly what it is. I never considered it. Haha thanks for giving me a great way to describe it!

Froog by reBTF 2019-10-15T23:30:15Z

@nurkkacthulhu Oh man, sorry about the dizziness. I'll add an option to disable it.

Froog by reBTF 2019-10-21T03:14:44Z

@peachtreeoath It's because it's not 3D at all. I draw each layer of the model as a regular sprite offset by a bit for each layer.

If you want more information I made a video about another game I made with this style

[Youtube Link](https://youtu.be/LlNgNuT8tEA?t=79).

TRIGGORE by Lumpy 2019-10-14T06:04:42Z

I loved the little exploration aspect at the start where you had to find all your available resources.

The looping horizontal scrolling was great but I felt like the vertical scrolling didn't add anything to the game. It slightly added to the exploration at the start but often just got in the way when I was trying to fight off the enemies. So in a way it did add to the frenecity of the game, just not in a satisfying way.

Great art, I thought I recognised the artist and sure enough I had seen his garfield gameboy video.

God of the Elements by Keppu 2019-10-17T06:43:13Z

Very clean way of interacting with the game. It was very satisfying to drag an element in and have the result pop up.

The Persistent Thief by Darylsteak 2019-10-14T06:47:47Z

Very lovely theme and setting, immersive sound effects.

I was held back by the controls, definitely could have been context sensitive for most of them, i.e. one button that changes based on what you're looking at.

Quite ambitious and you pulled off a nice little heist game.

King of Nothing by notapixelstudio 2019-10-22T06:57:41Z

This was a super neat crypt of the necrodancer x chess crossover. Definitely a lot of room for extention.

My only issue was the music wasn't quite syncing up with the gameplay. I expect that was because I was playing it in a browser but I eventual got used to it.

I really enjoyed it! Clean design, juicy gameplay, great job!

Mishka's Beauty Salon by toad 2019-10-08T06:49:24Z

That was super cute. The art style was lovely and minimal with enough to convey plenty of emotion. The theme was really adorable, even such a small glimpse into their lives was immensely engrosing.

It was a little hard to navigate. It wasn't super clear when things were combining and there were some items below the screen I didn't see until I zoomed out. Also I couldn't find the cheeks.

The music was charming, the characters were adorable. Just a really great little experience.

Faze by Xenoxygene 2019-10-15T06:19:01Z

A lovely take on the start with no mechanics genre. The visuals were lovely, the world grew at a steady, interesting pace. Brilliantly crafted game.

triangle game by DaniDev 2019-10-18T05:52:09Z

Honestly this was very dull. The core combat wasn't interesting, there were no fun twists, it was just a standard twinstick shooter.

The visuals were neat and the effects were quite nice.

The Glowing Adventure by Clickbait 2019-10-08T10:58:43Z

I loved the smooth, bouncy animations.

I found the wand really difficult to use, I mean it was amusing to watch the character wave it around but it was to the detriment of gameplay.

The characters were cute and the artstyle was lovely.

Star Seeker by Ryano 2019-10-08T22:43:44Z

Lovely little experience, I was left wanting more at the end.

The only critism I have is it would be nice to be able to draw through stars and have them connect without leting go of the mouse.

Amazing atmosphere, graphics, mood, I love it!

Life Starts With Nothing by NoobDev 2019-10-08T22:37:12Z

Neat visual effects and the core loop was kind of fun.

The theme felt a bit forced but it worked.

The Unknown Nude by romes 2019-10-13T23:53:34Z

Neat little game, I found it a little arbitrary at points but it told a nice story. Solid use of limited mechanics to convey emotion.

PUMP by mmatt_ugh 2019-10-14T06:26:08Z

Really impressive game. Soooo juicy, felt great to play. I loved all the little touches like pumping the ghosts adding to your score, being able to pump your own ghost, hovering in the air when you attack, punchy sound effects when you hit an enemy. It was all great.

It had a surprising amount of depth too. Such as being able to combo the enemies from full health to death with the right timing as you fall down next to them, and being able to hover in the air by constantly pumping for extra distance.

I was seriously impressed with this game, great job!

REWRITER by johjoh 2019-10-17T00:12:16Z

I had a lot of fun. It was very satisfying to level up over a run to go from being cautious in every encounter to sniping enemies across the map.

My major issue was from being able to tell which square enemies and myself were in. I feel like it should have just been completely grid based instead of this partial mix between free movement and grid based attacks.

I beat it a few times and just kept starting another game so I had a great time.

Mullet Man and the Apocalypse by clemonades 2019-10-14T06:57:10Z

Nice sprites, engaging core loop.

I found the game a bit lacking, I was looking for more but it didn't seem to have it. Just a bit more variety in enemies, environment, something.

little BEETLE bottle BATTLE by AP Thomson 2019-10-14T22:50:13Z

I had a lot of fun with this game. Took me a few goes to get the hang of collecting the materials I needed and arranging the board how I wanted it but once I figured that out I had a great time. Such a great concept using the match 3 board as the map for the strategy component.

Great sound effects, graphics, solid work all over.
