LD39 — Running out of Power

Die To Survive by LooksLikeSomething 2017-08-01T22:17:06Z

Nice game overall and good concept. However i think the game would strongly benefit from some sounds and animation, just to make the character a little more lively

Archimedes 2029 by Brickkid512 2017-08-22T14:38:53Z

Wow, a survival/exploration game concept working great with this theme? That was impressive! I enjoyed it a lot. Congrats!

Plutonium by Nnnnneeeedddd 2017-08-22T14:58:34Z

Superb game. It was a lot of fun and I found it challenging in a good way. The music and effects are really nice too, and fit with the theme of the Jam. However the movement speed for the character is a bit to high for some parts of the levels. I would strongly suggest to add some kind of "walking button" to hold when you need to go a bit slower. Also incredible work, specially since the game is pure c++ and not some typical engine. Cheers!

Truck, Fuel my Rockets by garethjenkins 2017-08-19T00:53:40Z

Fun game with interesting gameplay. The graphics were soo good, actually I think they were too good, since performance was bellow 30 fps in my GT840m. The controls feel a bit odd at first but are fun and responsive as soon as you get the grasp of them. Good work!

Unpowerer by Garywiss 2017-08-21T18:06:20Z

Good job. Really well balanced difficulty and gameplay. The controls are just perfect. The game needs some music and some more variety, maybe a couple more of attacks and enemies. Good work nonetheless!

Unknown In The Dark by Risist 2017-08-01T11:09:41Z

Cool game! I like how it's a dark game without stop fitting the theme of the Jam, and the day based gameplay. I think the AI may need a workaround though, since allies some times run into and stay in the fire and die trying to lit it up.

Superbman by coomzy 2017-08-22T14:12:10Z

Very nice and fun game although a bit frustating and with some weird collitions

The Road To Power by tinykidtoo 2017-08-01T02:17:10Z

Really nice and moody game there! The gameplay keeps you guessing what will come next and the ending is in no way predictable. The game could use some sound efeccts and transitions to look a bit better.

Spincharge by DMajor 2017-08-20T16:42:05Z

The control is responsive and works well. Also the gameplay is simple and game objective is nice. The only problem I have with the game is oversimplicity and physics. The gameplay lacks any kind of option aside from moving, and that make the game repetitive in a few matches. Also the physics of the two pins work with the same strengh most of the time when colliding, which makes the gameplay a "find a tricky spot to push" kind of gameplay (don't know if this was intentional though). Overall is a good game but a bit too simple. I think it would strongly benefit from a versus mode (controls for the other pin).

HoverBots by genderTruckery 2017-08-22T15:04:27Z

Good, fun an original game. However how the bases work definetly needs a tutorial. Is super easy to get lost between the upgrades system and if you skip all the clicks to skip to next level you can even get stuck with absolutely nothing too do. Despite this, I think is a game with a lot of potential and with this problems solved, It would be a pretty solid entry.

Take my charge by josehzz 2017-08-20T16:51:26Z

The game is fun, interesting, has good graphics, and fits with the theme. Excellent work! I have but a couple of suggestions:

The game could benefit from some background music. Of course it would have to be a very soft and quiet one, but I think that is the final touch to nail the mood.

The camera is a bit too high for comfort (when the player is on the floor, the floor and the items in which the player is standing on can be hard to see).

Keep up the good work, congrats!

Lost Lantern by Phaix 2017-08-20T16:31:23Z

Really scary and atmospheric. I freaked out several times playing it, even though the main enemy is just a black cloud. Splendid work!

Night Shift by galacticglum 2017-08-01T11:58:45Z

Really good an interesting puzzles. Straight forward and simple to understand gameplay but challenging and interesting. However, the lack of sound makes the game a bit boring.

RoboParkour by Connorses 2017-08-22T15:31:08Z

Mirror's Edge meets LD 39, 10/10. I'd suggest to limit the jets, since spamming shift can get you to super heights and distances without wasting that much power. Excellent work!

Assault and Batteries by SecondThread 2017-08-21T11:59:03Z

Couldn't find anyone to play and although I waited with a created game no one joined, so I will not rate. Nonetheless making a pvp game for the compo in so little time is crazy. Nice!

Robot Run by jake 2017-08-22T15:34:49Z

A bit too simple for being fun, after a few seconds you have pretty much seen it all. The concept is cool though, could make for a really solid game with some updates for the gameplay like new obstacles, enemies or new abilities for the player apart from jumping

Low Voltage by ReubenW 2017-08-21T18:21:07Z

Cute game with a nice and simple mechanic. It is a difficult game, but the controls feel good and responsive so it's ok. Would add some background music

Recoil by saucygames 2017-08-21T18:45:20Z

"secondary effects include crippling depression" That line alone scores you 5 stars on humor and mood, mate. Gameplay-wise is super fun and engaging to play, would make for a perfect arena game with some more maps and difficulty tweaks.

BugsTD by TheMonsterFromTheDeep 2017-08-20T13:35:23Z

The gameplay feels a bit weird to control, and it is not clear how to select and place the different weapons in the map. Aside from that the game is fun and the graphics are really good.

Keep your sanity by Lorthal 2017-08-01T22:30:30Z

Really nice mood, graphics and sound effects (those screams gave me the chills). I think the gameplay is pretty simple and easy to understand though I would love to see a bit more of explanation about the goal of our protagonist. The only thing that felt off to me was the attack animation, which is pretty and really well done but doesn't exactly give you the feelling of feedback that makes you fell like you are actually attacking something (I wouldn't now how to improve it myself, so just take it as a friendly remark, rather than feedback xD) Keep up the good work!

Static Shoes by drkr 2017-08-21T10:58:23Z

I like the idea of the game a lot, i find it quite original. Though I would like to see more uses of the game mechanic and some other ways of charging/discharging the main character's energy. Also some more music and effects would give it a lot more points for mood. Hopefully you can expand this idea with more leves post-jam. Nice work!

Inefficiency by lcmw-spud 2017-08-22T14:34:18Z

Playable game and overall fun but has a few issues. The movement, even when sprinting is a bit too slow for comfort. There is very few feedback for damage in the game, aside from your sound effect upon losing life, there's is no animation or sprite drawn when you shoot or when the enemies recieve damage upon leaving the sun zones. It is a good entry but it is clearly seen as a super rushed game, even by a Jam standards, which is no good. Good entry nonetheless.

Squanchy Squids by pjnovas 2017-08-01T22:23:31Z

Really interesting gameplay and concept here. I love how the player needs to think their movements carefully at the begginning of each level in order to succed. Some sound effects or even background music would be fine, but overall I enjoyed the game

Light by Curtz 2017-08-21T10:47:19Z

The gameplay is pretty solid and fun. The levels are well balanced and i liked the pace of the progression of the game. The audio was a little glitchy in my computer, though that could be my pc's fault

Power Rush by Mik3 2017-08-21T11:24:58Z

Very fun and well though gameplay, although I completed the game, I couldn't figure out how to charge the drill properly. I just had to spam the mouse in circles around the wheel. Nonetheless the game was pretty fun and fresh and graphics and animation are really good, specially the drill debris. Keep it up!

Powah by mutuware 2017-08-22T14:21:37Z

Good mechanic and interesting graphics and gameplay, however the controls made the experience a bit frustating for me. Also i think you should consider adding some sound effects. Good work

Fading Light by RockhopperGames 2017-08-21T12:05:16Z

Could make for a super cool story driven / walking simulator game. I liked the parkour and the idea of choosing on what to expend power in order to be able to explore in the light. Cool work!

Powering Down by jwin 2017-08-19T02:01:19Z

Simply excellent work. The effects and visuals are outstanding and the gameply feels fluid and responsive all the time. I love how the game core mechanics make the player choose how they are going to face each area and with what advantages and disadvantages. Fun and impressive, wonderful job!

Crazy Tesla Taxi by AViTT 2017-08-19T01:02:09Z

Crazy Taxi: Tesla Edition. With textures, character models and music, I would buy it instantly. Nothing more to say

Extend that cord! by Zirrrus 2017-08-20T16:08:26Z

The gameplay is very interesting, the control of the cord (specially when moving left/right) needs some tweaking in my opinion though, but overall is fun and works well. Also the animations and transitions are on point and make the whole game a super fluid experience!

LD39 - Runner Clone by LogFlames 2017-08-21T12:13:22Z

A runner in 3d with animations and several minigames. Cool! I loved the idea of the minigames, though the mouse control in those is a bit weird. The game will stringly benefit from more speed or an acceleration mechanic.

Neon Ride by Andrey Voznuyk 2017-08-22T15:25:20Z

Nice prototype of game. However the lack of music and the weird physics make it a bit frustating to play. It is a good prototype and could scalate really well nonetheless.

Voltage Velocity by 0AS0 2017-08-21T11:55:07Z

Straightforward and plain simple gameplay. For a game made from scratch in 10 hours is a really solid entry! The only thing that anoyed me was that upon retrying I respawned in the same spot of death.

Charge Infinitum by HacksawUnit 2017-08-01T10:59:58Z

I liked the art style and music a lot. The design of enemies is also really cool, and i love how the game makes you decide really quick because you lose life over time during your turn choice.

Depths Disconnected by drazil100 2017-08-01T22:40:42Z

Classic, good gameplay, good jump and shoot feeling, good animations and effects, well balance difficulty and exploration over levels... what can I say? Simply one of the best games I've played from the Jam so far. The only thing I would improve is enemy variety. Since exploration is rewarding and well done, it will nail it if there were more enemies of different types. Nevertheless, excellent work!!

Running Out Of Power supplies by Koen Bresters 2017-08-21T18:36:30Z

Super fun game and well done graphics and level design. However moving between cables needs some animation or transition in order to not be a killer in a lot of situations were you don't know where you are during a few instants. Aside from that detail, is a wonderful game, nothing to complain about. Excellent work!

Potential Energy by Carsen D. 2017-08-20T16:27:55Z

The atmosfere was perfect and drove me through the entire game, the dialogues where simple but gave enough information to keep you guessing and wanting to find out more. Won't say anything about graphics because clearly they were just made that simple. A little short too, if it were a couple of levels longer, it would be a super fantastic story driven game! Nice experiment for the Jam nonetheless!

Photon Phury by PanC4k3 2017-08-01T11:18:25Z

"No you fool, the point is not to recharge" Best moody protagonist so far. It's not a super entertaining game, but the graphics are superb and I had my daily dose of laughter. Good work!

Downpour by LuckyFeathers 2017-08-21T11:05:44Z

Prettyest game i have seen in the jam so far. The game was simply beautiful, both in graphics and atmosphere. The gameplay was simple but was fun, and the music and effects were superb. Awesome work!

Battery: Critical by GroverTheGrovekeeper 2017-08-22T14:26:59Z

Nice work. The game feels very fluid and comfortable gameplay-wise, the bypass mechanic is nice, and enemies are fun. Would add some more enemies or one charged attack to contribute to the longevity of the game. Cool work!

INKrease by bsymon 2017-08-19T01:21:32Z

Nice concept. The game is fun and is perfect for derping around with a friend. However the gameplay needs some tweaking. The penguin is a bit odd to control, the paint doesn't always spread properly (example: gaps created when absorving your own paint can't be refilled again) and absorving your own paint fails at times making you move through the map until it starts to work. Really nice idea, will be a good game for happy versus sessions with friends when it's fully finished.

Light out by Harrelix 2017-08-01T11:42:30Z

Nice mood and creep sounds there! Gameplay is a bit slow-paced but fun overall. Keep up the good work!

Inverteb by David Allen 2017-08-22T14:49:03Z

Simply awesome, first Unreal 4 Engine I've seen in the Jam and it's just incredible. The controls feel a bit odd, but not frustating (at least not for me) and the sound is superb. Only thing I can complain about is how overpowered the "other dimension" is. It's pixelations reloads too quickly I think, and it takes a bit too much time for it to become blurry enough so you can't see and play comfortably.

Awesome work guys!

Steve's Lab by tapestry 2017-08-19T01:12:37Z

Really fun and challenging at the same time. Although I think the air gameplay feature doesn't exactly fit the theme, it certainly adds the stress to the mix and combined with the puzzles and the search for keycards, I found it very entertaining overall. Keep it up!

Probably A Capable Rhythm Game by New Sock Smell 2017-08-22T15:19:47Z

It's such a great and fun game, and the music is outstanding too! The game needs to give some feedback when the player is doing great (pretty much like when the message of the spamming cilinders comes in), but aside from that is an excellent work!

Lightning racer by thetatautau 2017-08-19T01:32:25Z

Pretty impressive visuals and effects. Gameplay is good and fits well with the theme. The only thing that I would change would be the obstacles, which are too big for comfort, both graphically and in terms of gameplay, you don't have enough time to figure out well where the next gap between obstacles is and neither you can see it because the other obstacles are so huge. Nevertheless, really good work, congrats.

Recharge by HeavyMetalKid 2017-08-21T18:57:38Z

Addictive and simple gameplay, with upgrade systems. Really solid Jam entry. However my ears hurt while playing, the sound effects are just plain annoying in my opinion, and I needed to mute the game to elude my death upon hearing the charging sound :(. Great work nonetheless

Encounters by Valphera 2017-08-21T11:35:42Z

The game was fun. It is a walking simulator type of game, but I still enjoyed the music and the silly dialogs and characters were super fun. Also I totally lost it with the joke at the end (I will not spoil it, but to anyone reading this: play till the end). Congrats

SpaceY by luckyy 2017-08-01T02:25:36Z

Nice work. I think is pretty cool that the player can move entirely freely and scan for pick ups. However, the gameplay is a bit slow-paced in my opinion (though that's not necessarely a bad thing). I think the game would strongly benefit from more variety in the pickups and probably a little explanation about what they do.

Step out of the light by Zdeno 2017-08-01T11:51:19Z

Really nice graphics, appealing main character, interesting gameplay and really good Portal vibes in those puzzles. Really nice work!

THE STORY ABOUT THE ROBOT THAT WAS ON LEVEL 1 WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENED by Mesuko 2017-08-19T01:46:59Z

The controls are good, the idea of climbing walls is great, the animation is on top, good graphics, etc. In terms of technical achievement, easyly the best LD39 game i've ever seen. However, as many others have pointed out, the levels and game difficult are just unfair and I was unable to get past the second level. The learning curve needs some tweaking and level design needs to be a little less demanding for the player during the early levels. Despite all of this, with these issues fixed, it would easily be my favourite LD39 game so far, so congratulations for all the effort and good luck with the future updates!

Super Charged by Manumeq 2017-08-19T02:05:02Z

Yup, everything you guys said is absolutely true, specially the spamming part. Fun fact: in the first day of the jump, obstacles just toke away 20% of your charge whenever you touched them, and then had one second of cooldown if you stayed in before making the next "hit". This made spamming impossible, but we thought it would feel a bit odd gameplay-wise, so we changed it to the damage-per-second current approach. Anyway thank you all for your supportive feedback, we have made an update to fix most of the problems you guys pointed out, so in case you come back to check the game's progress, feel free to comment again please, we'd love to hear your opinion. Cheers!

Super Charged by Manumeq 2017-08-20T21:09:04Z

Since I couldn't find an option to reply to a comment in the site, I will be answering @secondthread 's comment here.

Our game is freely inspired by a very popular smartphone game called "Color Switch". Is a pretty known title where you are a small white ball that changes colours and have to go through multi-coloured obstacles, being only able to go through the ones that are the same color as your ball. It was one of the first games to use this kind of gameplay formula and a lot of games were inspired by it. We never heard about that game you mentioned, and We came up with the idea of Super Charged after seeing some Color Switch gameplay and tried to make something different with the same formula at the same time.

Secondly, the art is self made, except for the metal texture which was found using the google tools for Creative Commons 0. Aside from that single texture, all the art was made in roughly 6 hours using photoshop, or the unity particle systems. As an example, the "fire" you mention is a total of 6 particle systems heavily modified by ourselves within the editor with a custom material we created to make it look like some kind of ray. You probably guessed it by now, but none of us are artists, we are just rookies in that matter and did our best although the results are not as good as we would like. We are both programmers.

And finally, the music is nowhere to be mentioned in the description or the developer update because it is inside the game. If you enter the "Credits" section in the main menu, you will find that the music used is taken from bensound.com, always with the attribution Creative Commons License.

Hope this clarifies your doubts about the making process of the game. It is true that is not a fully original gameplay formula and definetly there are a lot of games extremely similar gameplay-wise, but we want to make ourselves very clear here:

We have not and We will not skip ethics by stealing another person's work; not in this game, and not in the games to come.

Cheers and thank you very much for taking your time and warn us about the rules, and how important is to keep people informed about the development process and assets work.

Get Energised! by GalaxStudios 2017-08-20T15:56:06Z

Super fun and simple gameplay that perfectly fits the theme of the Jam. The only complaint I could have was that the game is not fully responsive at the death screen since it appeared weird and bad placed in my laptop computer (no problems on my 1920x1080 desktop).

THE LIGHT TRAPPER by TRIGONOMETRIC GAMES 2017-08-21T18:16:09Z

Good idea and well thought gameplay. The game itself is quite decent so don't apologize for it :). You need to work in the mechanics though, I was utterly unable to go through the second level since I can't find the way to teleport properly. Consider adding some kind of more explanatory tutorial. Good luck with the results!
