LD39 — Running out of Power

Modular Destruction Labs by SecondDimension 2017-08-01T13:16:23Z

Hey guys, I like the way the game feels. Consistent graphics and music makes good mood. Your idea about creating character optimised for certain level is also very nice, but..

The thing I don't like is the way that the robot is being constructed. It feels like it doesn't matter which way you will build it and in the end you will just slam on some engines and necessary tools and fly to the exit.

Have a nice day, and if you'll have time, I'll be glad if you check out our game too ;) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/step-out-of-the-light

Wow, using sound this way is really cool and innovative, this is example of amazing game design!

Graphics, sound, gameplay, story..all the pieces are playing together and final experience is just awesome!

Thank you for sharing the game with us!

Wow, the TV idea is awesome :grinning:. It kind of reminded me Castle Crashers..maybe you should apply your humor in similar type of game

Keep your sanity by Lorthal 2017-08-04T21:52:28Z

Hi guys,

I like visual style of your game. I love relatively simple and uniform graphics! Your work with the light/darkness is really nice and it forces the player to constantly rotate around and look for threats.

When making horror it is the work with the sound that makes the most impact at the end. I would recommend spending big part of your time on sound design. The audio in your game unfortunately felt quite repetitive after a while and as a result it didn't have the effect that it could have had. Just imagine something like this:

1. You enter the dark room and the music slowly fades away until there is complete silence. You can hear only your own footsteps. 2. There is only one doors on the other side of the room so you go there. 3. When you try to open them the doors explode and some huge ghost attacks you screaming and destroying everything in its path.

I know it is a lot of work to implement similar behaviour into the game, but I think it is completely worth it! If you want to create horror games, try to think about them same as you would think about a horror movie. Check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuvJuLs6eBA&t , it could help you design powerfull jumpscares and at the end create really scary games!

I hope I'll see more scary stuff from you soon! Thanks for sharing the game with us!

I Once Had Power by jackyjjc 2017-08-01T12:09:50Z

You made my day! Perfect game!

I Once Had Power by jackyjjc 2017-08-01T17:01:56Z

There is an ending? Gotta see that!

I Once Had Power by jackyjjc 2017-08-01T21:56:10Z

@jackyjjc oh.."didn't make the ending" :grinning:

I was so excited when I saw that post that I forgot how to read..

Well, while I was trying to beat the game, I found possible glitch that makes the game simpler..but still hard enough for me to not get past 69 kills :grinning:

Not sure if it is desirable behaviour or not. But while your attack is active, you can quickly toggle left/right and enemies will get hit more times, this makes it easier when your damage is low.

Hello there, I kind of like these simple "choose an option" games. Hovewer in this one it is relatively easy to develop simple strategy that is highly profitable. I would suggest adding random events to the gameplay. Those would on one side increased difficulty of the game and hopefully also prevented early feeling of repetition during playing.

To the bright side, I really enjoyed the graphics you made. It was simple and practical but still very pleasant to play with!

Run'n Score by MatKubik 2017-08-04T15:38:43Z

Enjoyable little game. I liked how your power level influenced your speed and jump height! Nice idea and well implemented.

Only problem is that the game becomes repetitive quite fast. I would suggest increasing difficulty over time by throwing more barrels at the player at the same time or by adding some more obstacles to it etc.

Thanks for sharing!

Breaker Breaker! by FlyingMeta 2017-08-02T09:05:25Z

Hello guys, the broken engine mechanic is awesome, it makes the game so much more challenging.

The game has really good feeling to it! Well done!

Thermal Power Plant K-13 by Finlal 2017-08-04T17:03:33Z

Hello, At the beginning I was struggling to find out how to play the game. Small tutorial would be really beneficial in this case. Also I think that if vehicles moved faster the gameplay would feel much smoother.

To the good part..I love the atmosphere that you managed to create! You have done a really great job with those visuals and sounds.

Thank you for sharing the game with us!

Charge Infinitum by HacksawUnit 2017-08-01T11:46:54Z

Hey there, You have done a great job at harmonizing sound, graphic and overall mood of the game ;) Excellent..

Downsides are the short play time. Gameplay soon becomes kind of repetitive. Also little balancing of the shield would be nice, because now it is not so usefull.

Thank you for puslishing it!

If you'll find a time, I'll be glad if you check out our game too :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/step-out-of-the-light

Lantern by Kaban 2017-08-02T13:54:03Z

Guys, you know how to make awesome atmosphere!

Visuals and audio both just perfect, I hope I'll see more of your work soon!

Back Home by Angry Squirrels 2017-08-02T12:25:20Z

Perfect visuals and audio. Very well done!

The gameplay was very relaxing, but I had moments when I was not sure where up or down is and it felt almost dizzy. I would try to indicate basic directions somehow..maybe just slightly darker color at the bottom would be enough.

Thanks for sharing the game!

Ultimate Fusion by Thirrash 2017-08-04T19:05:47Z

Hello guys, I must say that your take on the theme is excellent! Gameplay was really innovative and you should continue building on this!

I think that the way you used camera is in this case just overcomplicating the game. Your idea is very good and in my opinion it would benefit the most from simple static camera above the area(controlling the atoms is already difficult enough on itself :grinning:)

Also maybe I found little bug..on HTML5 version buttons on the ending menu didn't work form me :slight_frown:

But overall this is a great game..and for only 15 hours? Super amazing game!

Thank you for sharing it with us!

Professional Protesters by MartinTristan 2017-08-02T11:49:56Z

Hello, this is funny little game inducing a lot of pain :grinning:

Having your protesters getting tired is really nice improvement against standard clicker games. It forces player to be active instead of just building passive income.

Everything in the game matches overall style and that's what I like too. Good job!

Depths of Oceania by cnoble 2017-08-02T10:31:49Z

Hello,

I like the way gameplay is designed. On one side there is energy which is pushing you to move further, on the other one there is pressure that is slowing you down, clever.

I see that you have put a lot of work into models and animations. But I think that using 2D or some kind of 2D/3D hybrid on this type of game would be more beneficial, especially at Compo. It would give you more time for polishing the game and making it more enjoyable.

Rats will kiss the gunner's daughter by Mr.Houdini 2017-08-04T16:11:46Z

Well done guys!

Great graphics, amazing music, rewarding gameplay. I sacrificed half of my nootebook to find the rat, I got him at the end and It felt really good!

Thank you for the experience!

The art and the music is really nice. Lower difficulty would be nice :grinning:

AtomoS by DayDreamerStudios 2017-08-01T21:28:05Z

Hello guys, congratulations on releasing your first game!

Your mechanics are simple and that is often convenient on mobile platforms. I think you could build on this and end up with a successful game, but you still have a lot of work to do.

At this point the game feels repetitive after a while. I would like to suggest few improvements that you could try out  * Movement is really limited. It seems like you have fixed movement speed on main atom. I would Lerp it up and make it so that the movement speed is higher as the distance between atom and the pointer increases. This gives a player a lot more maneuvering space. * Make it so that the difficulty rises with time. You could randomize speed or size of atoms. Add some special effects to "enemy" atoms too(pull, push, some interaction with close atoms..for example making bonds between them that could block you etc., your options are infinite) * Add more visual effects. Dynamic background..animations. Those can be simplistic and it is absolutely fine, but game needs to live! * Add music that will strenghten the mood of the game.

I hope you will find my feedback helpfull.

Proto472 by uzyfeo 2017-08-01T16:42:02Z

Hello ( ÄŒau :grinning:)

This is an addictive one. I just had to get a thousand and finally got up to 1076.

@uzyfeo Whats your best distance? :grinning:

I would try to change gradual acceleration to milestone based one. For example, you would increase speed every 10 seconds or so. My idea is, that when you do it like this, every time you accelerate you feel it even more and as a result you get stronger feeling of "omg omg how am I gonna handle this speed?". If you'd do it this way, you could also possibly add some super cool acceleration effects(look to NFS for inspiration :grinning:).

Step out of the light by Zdeno 2017-08-01T13:41:10Z

@mrerdalural I completely sympathize with him.. I would have red glow too, if I'd be forced to live in the dark and constantly avoid lava and lasers :grinning:

@uzyfeo To si piš, svět je malej :grinning:

Thank you all for you amazing feedback!

Step out of the light by Zdeno 2017-08-01T15:35:19Z

@jackyjjc Hi, I love to hear that you liked our game

About the box mechanics..I quess you speak about level 6. The idea is that some boxes are related to certain triggers and when the trigger is active, those boxes are locked in place. The problem is that we didn't have enough time to create visual clues for this kind of mechanic, which made it hard to understand it :slight_frown: ..(this will be fixed in later versions :grinning: )

Every level in the game have a solution. The one with lasers have just enough boxes to make it through, I hope you'll come back to beat it :grinning:.

Step out of the light by Zdeno 2017-08-02T12:06:13Z

Thank you all for your feedback!

It's feels good to see that you guys enjoyed playing our game!

@prettylucky Yeah, the joke rate is too damn high.. The robot would surely like to meet up with some lady-robots :grinning: We will think about that!

@ynk In earlier versions the robot would die without energy, but the game begun too difficult to play. :slight_frown: Now the light has mainly two purposes: * To show your level of energy, which is now only needed to push blocks around, but we hope we will make it more impactfull in later versions. * To make it more challenging for a player to solve our puzzles. Without light you don't see too much and you need to memorize layout and think ahead.

Step out of the light by Zdeno 2017-08-04T08:26:05Z

Once again..thank you all for your feedback! :grinning:

@sgstair Thanks for playing our game on stream. To see someone playing our game is even more rewarding. Also amazing suggestions, TYVM!

@cnoble We were happy that he was moving at all :grinning: But yeah, movement does really need some polishing.

@angela-he Thank you  About the start screen..using interactivity actually saved us a lot of time. We already had mechanics implemented so it was easier to create "start screen level", instead of creating more content just for opening scene. For robot voice we used this http://www.oddcast.com/home/demos/tts/tts_example.php Alan with higher pitch may seem familiar

Hey there, your graphics is really nice.

In my opinion you should try using your skills in other types of games. My point is that endless runner is fun for a while, then it gets boring, player turns the game off and never plays it again. That is sad because you have put so much effort into making it look nice, and people will try to beat the record for a while and thats it.

Have a nice day, and if you'll have time, I'll be glad if you check out our game too ;) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/step-out-of-the-light

The Color of Days To Come. by TheOneThatNeverWas 2017-08-04T16:32:15Z

What was that? I am confused. Man, I don't really know what magic you used but this was really interesting experience. I am surprised how well you did in causing emotions. I guess that among other things it have something to do with those great graphics and incredible selection of music! Well done!

My only suggestion would be to shorten space part of the game, some parts of it felt quite long. But overall the game was pleasant surprise for me!

Thank you for sharing this experience with us!

Leaf Runner by David Greene 2017-08-01T07:57:09Z

Hey guys ;)

I played the game and there is what I think:

Positive thoughts: * I liked how map is looking. * Minimap is also highly appreciated. * The combination of driving/trading is really cool and I think for some people it would make enjoyable experience(when fully polished :) ). * Dealing drugs :D

Negative ones: * At the beginning, car is really hard to handle. * Non-intuitive gameplay. When I start a game, I want to understand what I should be doing purely by playing it. On first try I was just driving around, absolutely confused. I discovered the trading part only after I have red your description in detail. * When I tried trading, it was not working properly. I bought items low, sold higher and still have lost money. * Mood deserves upgrade.

Hints: * Make some kind of tutorial/ingame tips for new players. * Let your theme be known(the drug dealing one). Theme is very funny, but game's mood does not represent it at all. If you play as a pot dealer, I would expect reggae music from the radio, smoke coming from the car windows, maybe try adding some stoned effect(dizzy camera, colors changing) etc.

Overall: There is potential in theme and in new mechanics combination. But it needs to be implemented better :)

I hope my feedback is helpful and I will be glad if you will find time to check our game too ;) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/step-out-of-the-light

TITAN, Defend Earth before it's too late by MichaelTWG 2017-08-03T12:38:42Z

Amazing gameplay comcept! I love it!

My only complaints would be about jump controlls. They would deserve better implementation, sometimes while I was holding multiple buttons at once the jump wouldn't work.
