Day One - driving car, cops get'cha if you stand still too long.

Day Two Begins - GTA style building graphics

Today focuses on the economy. Buying/Selling mechanics.

Day 3

Multiplayer works for the most part, but matchmaking didn't make the cut. So, it's now a single player game.

Enjoy :)

You did a good job, the map look awesome, with all the 2D top down merged with 3D, really cool! The mini-map display is a sweet bonus that I really liked too.

Being said that, I think you could have done better on the car movement. Sometimes was really difficult to turn and the update between frames was not that smooth, making the movement seem laggy, I think that have to do with the speed you've given to the car.

This is a good game, you've made a good effort, you should be very proud!

Hi David,

Downloaded and played through the game. Gave you a rating, so hopefully that helps you out.

Feedback: The controls dont feel quite right to me. Left and right in particular seem super over sensitive. Also, it seems like even sitting still somtimes if I hit left or right it would start me going in that direction and turning a bit even though I was sitting still.

I liked that there were two things going on with the driving and the buying and selling but I didnt really understand how the two were linked from the gameplay. It seemed like anywhere I stopped I could buy / sell and sometimes the prices were not favorable to sell.

I pulled in for gas to experience the cop scenario and I waited, hearing the sirens, for the cop to pull up and get me. I was assuming I was going to get chased or something and I could outrun them, but it seems like you get a certain amount of time to charge and thats it. That was my perception at least. I waited too long and got BUSTED without ever seeing a cop car.

Sound effects were fine, no big surprises there.

Hope those comments and review were helpful. This is my first time completing a) a game and b) a game JAM, so I am trying to comment and review as many people as I can.

Yea, we were going to add a cop car, but we ended up just hovering over that red square. It was part of the Day 1 prototype and it stuck. Thanks for sharing your experience. I've actually uncovered a buying/selling bug that I'm fixing right now. Apparently when you sell you always sell at the game's original price for an item. Still possible to make a profit, but it's certainly not intuitive. Gonna sneak that change in RQ.

Hey guys ;)

I played the game and there is what I think:

Positive thoughts: * I liked how map is looking. * Minimap is also highly appreciated. * The combination of driving/trading is really cool and I think for some people it would make enjoyable experience(when fully polished :) ). * Dealing drugs :D

Negative ones: * At the beginning, car is really hard to handle. * Non-intuitive gameplay. When I start a game, I want to understand what I should be doing purely by playing it. On first try I was just driving around, absolutely confused. I discovered the trading part only after I have red your description in detail. * When I tried trading, it was not working properly. I bought items low, sold higher and still have lost money. * Mood deserves upgrade.

Hints: * Make some kind of tutorial/ingame tips for new players. * Let your theme be known(the drug dealing one). Theme is very funny, but game's mood does not represent it at all. If you play as a pot dealer, I would expect reggae music from the radio, smoke coming from the car windows, maybe try adding some stoned effect(dizzy camera, colors changing) etc.

Overall: There is potential in theme and in new mechanics combination. But it needs to be implemented better :)

I hope my feedback is helpful and I will be glad if you will find time to check our game too ;) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/step-out-of-the-light

Have a nice day :)

Hi! A very funny game. I love the economy/driving combination. It was hard for me to figure out where to charge my 'Leaf'. It also took a minute to figure out that sales can begin when I stop. But then it made sense soon. The driving model is a bit tough but works. Good job putting this together!

rikoclon 2017-08-02 01:04

Dope Jam! Seriously actually fun after you get the hang of the steering. really should be front wheel drive... or maybe road just a bit wider. its all good tho! I like the strains you choose! the pricing was really good too. sounds like you know your stuff :P

the parking lot should have been a gas station or (electric car charger). the mini map could have said charge instead of P. the hints definitely helped and i should have paid more attention. maybe make them not random. Not to sound harsh, but the mood really wasn't all there. The pot leaf graphic and the car were good, but that was the only hint for mood sadly. I was hoping for more humor also.

music and SFX are present. the cop mechanic was solid. Love the concept!

david-greene 2017-08-02 13:09

@rikoclon - totally.... we had lots of plans and so many ideas were cut.

Ideas we had for charging stations. In the end we just used the parking lots for "economic zone centers" and "charging stations."

* Half (Baked) Foods (Whole Foods) * Cloud 8 (Walmart) * 4-20 Gas (7-11)

That sort of thing... and yea, music... I totally agree. Thanks for the review!

Pretty good game. A bit hard to get into since you don't really know what to do at first and the car handling is something to get used to, but it's not too bad once you learn.

cpv 2017-08-09 17:44

Interesting gameplay. Hard at the beginning to understand what and where. Car controls are harder than I expected, but not deadly hard. I was looking already for other cars and how to exit the car intuitively :) Really like the top down view. Some nice soundtrack would be an improvement.

vasco-rodrigues 2017-08-15 14:21

Good game, however the controls are a bit difficult, and it felt a bit confusing knowing where was cheaper to charge the car. I also missed being able to drive on top of the sidewalks, like in GTA :) The camera movement was nice and fluid, really liked it, and the concept was nice. Great job!

huvaakoodia 2017-08-16 18:05

Nice concept and a rather ambitious design too. You managed to create a whole city, implement car physics and add in a basic trading system. That is a commendable amount of content.

Some issues and suggestions:

The reverse gear doesn't work as it should. In RL a reversing car will turn left when you turn the steering wheel left, not the other way around. This made it really tricky for me to drive on the thin streets.

The trading system is very basic and it is based on time rather than location. In RL rare things are more valuable than common things. So a drug only sold on the west side of the city should be more valuable on the east side.

To make it easier for the player to understand such a positional pricing system, buying (and maybe even selling) should only happen in specific places on the map. These places would be marked on the main map and the minimap (which is pretty neat-o) to make planning easier.

It is a shame you didn't get a proper police car in. Occasional car chases would really spice up the experience.

Good work; but, as you know, there are many possibilities and improvements to be made.

franklins-ghost 2017-08-18 14:19

Reminded me of the old GTA game which is always a good thing. Took me awhile playing before I figured out that the buying and selling could be done whenever you stop. Which made sense once I realised. Think the car controls could be tweaked a bit more to feel tighter and I was surprised with the reversing turns, expected the car to move the opposite way so it took some getting used to. Did have fun just driving around the city though and thought the look of the city with the mix of 2D and 3D was nicely done and implemented.

toonteamj 2017-08-18 18:00

This game has a lot of potential, however I found the driving controls to be frustratingly difficult.

david-greene 2017-08-19 15:41

Actually @huvaakoodia - the trading is done by time AND location (this is one of those things that would benefit by more UI work -- possibly naming the zones.) Each "economic zone" is determined by the parking lot that you're closest to.

As always, thanks for the comments!

aurel300 2017-08-20 18:41

We streamed your game with Danae plays on Twitch. :) Here's a link:

[Danae streams Ludum Dare 39: Day 3, part 1: Leaf Runner](https://youtu.be/LN1svjCl2z0?t=38m39s)

This is a nice concept, but the execution could use a lot of polish. The streets felt bare with no decor, other cars, pedestrians, police cars chasing you, etc. It seems you have put some thought into the trading system, with different prices and times, etc. I wish this was more clear to the player though – there is not much indication of zone boundaries, of any "reason" for the price fluctuations. The best I could do was drive to other places (terribly, cause the curbs kept hitting my car!) and hope the prices are better there. I would suggest limiting your scope a bit more next time, to get a less complex but more polished game.

Good job though :)
