LD39 — Running out of Power

Get to the Bunkah by jonathan-turner 2017-08-01T21:55:51Z

Thanks @theflyingkeyboard !

A simple intro page would have definitely set the tone I think. Just ran out of time.

Appreciate the review.

No Sorcerer's Sky by TheFlyingKeyboard 2017-08-01T22:07:05Z

As others have said, I couldnt figure out what to do. I saw that clicking on parts of the ship got you into an upgrade window, and that the upgrade cost a certain amount of materials, but I didnt know how many materials I had or how to get more.

I think the graphics and sound were very good for a jam.

The UI in general was really good.

I just didnt know what to do for the gameplay.

Automated Explorer by Aircraft Terrier 2017-08-02T03:19:57Z

Wow, I really think you got a lot done in the time available.

As many others have said I think the graphics and audio were very coherent for the style you were going for and look very cool. I like the zelda screen switch mechanic, very nice.

I liked that you had multiple drones but after a few tries I couldnt figure out how to get the 3rd drone unlocked. The idea of exploration is directly at odds with the theme of running out of power, so it was hard to buckle in and feel free to explore and do the bullet puzzles with the constant threat of (quickly) running out of power.

Some people need / want that stress and others dont, guess it ultimately depends on what youre going for. Just something to think about.

Thanks for submitting a cool game!

Leaf Runner by David Greene 2017-08-01T00:09:35Z

Hi David,

Downloaded and played through the game. Gave you a rating, so hopefully that helps you out.

Feedback: The controls dont feel quite right to me. Left and right in particular seem super over sensitive. Also, it seems like even sitting still somtimes if I hit left or right it would start me going in that direction and turning a bit even though I was sitting still.

I liked that there were two things going on with the driving and the buying and selling but I didnt really understand how the two were linked from the gameplay. It seemed like anywhere I stopped I could buy / sell and sometimes the prices were not favorable to sell.

I pulled in for gas to experience the cop scenario and I waited, hearing the sirens, for the cop to pull up and get me. I was assuming I was going to get chased or something and I could outrun them, but it seems like you get a certain amount of time to charge and thats it. That was my perception at least. I waited too long and got BUSTED without ever seeing a cop car.

Sound effects were fine, no big surprises there.

Hope those comments and review were helpful. This is my first time completing a) a game and b) a game JAM, so I am trying to comment and review as many people as I can.

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Treehouse Party by stuffedgravy 2021-04-28T15:59:32Z

Well that escalated quickly, didnt expect that kind of party hah.

The jumping was a bit frustrating, had a hard time getting to some ledges, but maybe thats what you were going for.

Liked the audio and the mood change half way through.

Nice job.

shaftception by testudor 2021-04-27T21:51:55Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I loved the art and audio! The falling drill thing doesnt make any sense and was fun anyways.

The controls I think could use some love. The shift s thing is a bit involved for a game you have to react that quickly in.

I liked how you slowed time in order to allow time to key in the combo for the lower things.

Nice job!

Double Bubble by jonathan-turner 2021-04-28T14:11:56Z

Thanks @nice-gear-games !

Since its not said explicitly anywhere, I can spill the beans here. When barrels (which give you more life) are spawned, a whale is spawned at the same time and it swims upwards. So if you see a whale coming up, you know that below it there will be a barrel at some point and you can try to hang out in that area to pick the barrel up if its safe.

Thanks for playing!

Deeper and Deeper by minibobbo 2021-04-28T03:29:16Z

Great job. Loved the art and sound, very cohesive feeling.

I kept hitting O on accident since two hands on the keyboard controls are very awkward feeling (my opinion), and that was killing me for some reason.

It prompting you to go to the next level when you die was kind of confusing.

Nice work.

DDR: Dive Dive Revolution by Tyrannas 2021-04-28T22:04:09Z

Tough to do the two handed movement, nice presentation.

I didnt make it far, but I liked what I saw.

Good job.

Eldritch Depths by simex 2021-04-27T03:25:31Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I really thought this was a well put together package. Im used to mouse and keyboard so I died the first time not understanding the way to kill the enemies was using the arrow keys. But upon respawning it was clear I just failed to read the instructions.

I thought the art was dark and gloomy and fit really well together though per my previous comment I do think the instructions in the starting screen could have stood out more / had higher visibility.

The combat felt good and allowing the attack to bounce is a nice touch. I liked the boss fight and also liked how the boss model got pulled into the next level down as a smaller regular enemy.

Nice work!

DRYVER by GuitarBro 2021-04-28T03:23:33Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

Lets just say this: driving things around is generally fun and you didnt disappoint. I liked driving the shuttle around the desert, that was cool.

What I didnt enjoy was the camera controls which were all over the place and appeared to be inverted weirdly?

I also didnt really understand how to pick a direction to find a part, drove for a while, ran out of energy and then died. So maybe some indication of a beacon or something to help guide you would be helpful, especially with the energy mechanic.

I liked the song and also liked the atmosphere you created.

Nice work!

The plot chickens by JPiolho 2021-04-28T22:02:19Z

Loved your cute graphics. I would have loved to have the camera pulled back a bit, seemed a little close.

Also, small nit on the controls, it would be nice to be able to hit E or whatever to advance conversation rather than having to use the mouse. Seemed natural but didnt work.

Otherwise, nice job!

Going Down by omer1615 2021-04-28T14:55:45Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

Was a really fun concept. When it first started I went oh no this is going to be a weird 3d office simulator thing, but really enjoyed the 2d platformer on the graph and being able to solve the jumping puzzles by manipulating the board.

I do agree that the controls were hard at first but figured it out.

Fun times.

My favorite part was the chat notification message from your boss, good stuff.

Leaky Faucet by Astavie 2021-04-28T15:12:15Z

Nice work! I honestly thought I was on your site that was down for a second til I realized I was in the game, so that was fun.

Thanks for submitting.

Cart go brrr by Sapazu 2021-04-28T13:39:38Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

Im not sure what the character model was, but other than that I liked the simple mechanics of shooting the cart and hitting the bats. I didnt understand what was happening for a second but then as soon as I saw it auto shoot the cart and it move it made total sense hah!

Way to go.

Journey for the Records of Remembrance by jasontherand 2021-04-27T21:22:53Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

It took me longer than I care to admit to see that there was a little X in the upper right of the instruction manual to get started with the game, I almost turned it off. Glad I found it, didn't expect that windowed UI element in a game world.

Was a fun entry, I enjoyed the setting and some of the humor you tried to impart.

The controlling of the probe was the hardest part, and 2 hits seemed punishing. I was able to get to 2 planets but then couldn't get through the hail of projectiles.

I liked the theme. Was also neat the heat shield going by the sun, that was a nice touch.

Cool entry, nice work!

Deep Space ONE by MrPiedPiper 2021-04-27T20:21:01Z

I really liked the humor and the characterization you achieved even in a short amount of time, the dialog system was very cool. I do think the default text appearance speed is too slow, I ended up right clicking each time. I liked the characters being on the sides of the dialog so you could tell who was talking.

I did think though that there was a bit too much dialogue up front for a short jam version like this.

Controls were simple and worked well. I liked how the boss was multi part so you had to take out each of its sections. Some sort of health indicator would have been great to know how much each section had left.

The difficulty was very low, but that might be what you were aiming for.

Also I think if you had added a simple shooting sound effect it would have made the game that much more engaging.

Overall, nice fun entry. Great job!

Curiosity by Bodaciouslycrazy 2021-04-28T02:33:53Z

Thanks for participating in the jam.

I really liked the mechanics at play here. Was simple to grasp that you had to avoid the storm and go deeper.

Decent difficulty i only made it to 30 something.

I didn't understand what the rocket was for since i was always digging and there was no fall damage, hm.

Nice job.

Moot by Peco 2021-04-28T15:37:28Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

Was a really cool experience.

Loved the art style and audio.

The character was cute, but heres food for thought: did having the character moving around really add anything? What if you just had the character on the board (since they're descending deeper and deeper) but you just interacted with things via the mouse (or touch for mobile).

Maybe either go that route, OR incorporate the movement of the character into the puzzles. For example maybe they have to activate the beams in a certain order because they cant pass through them, etc.

The only other small comment is adding something at the end to say "the end" would be helpful, I sat there like a dope for a bit because I wasnt sure if the game was over or not.

Other than those small things, fantastic entry.

Rock Shark Diamonds by Amar Ravi 2021-04-28T03:36:38Z

I played it through to the end!

I enjoyed that it was a complete experience. Nice little puzzle game with some frogger like elements.

I enjoyed the music and graphics, though simple, and it fit the theme.

Nice work.

Big Dive by TheDupy124 2021-04-27T01:05:44Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

This was a really solid entry. I liked the amount of optional instructions you can get before starting, some people want to read and some people just want to figure it out.

I thought all the graphics were of a similar style and looked coherent.

The music and sound was also fitting with the graphical style and the gameboy-esque setup of the game.

I did have trouble using some of the pickup items, unsure if that was a bug or I was just doing it wrong.

Not the most innovate of games but was a fun arcade style game to check out. Nice work!

Dig It! by Rusty Bailey 2021-04-28T13:28:38Z

Thanks for submitting to the jam.

Obviously you werent going for super modern graphics or audio, but I think your aesthetic was on point. Really great combination of sound and graphics. I enjoyed the different types of materials to dig through and I was able to intuitively read that some would be harder to get through than others, etc.

It wasn't an innovative game but the execution was FUN.

Great job.

AQUATIC CAVE ASSAULT by Danial 2021-04-28T16:02:35Z

Thanks for participating in the jam.

This was a tight little platformer, i really enjoyed the gliding mechanic.

I had some trouble with the wall grab, but I might just suck at platformers. Couldnt seem to jump afterwards, but could have been user error.

Great consistent audio and visual elements.

Simple game but well done!

DiverDeep by Cope 2021-04-27T21:45:02Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

Best thing about this entry for me was the music.

Simple easy to understand gameplay. The one thing I was frustrated by was the character movement was very weighty, like it felt like the movement pickup took too long, which was hard because of how rapidly things were approaching.

Nice work.

The Depths of Science by Trusty 2021-04-28T16:55:31Z

Nice to see a 3D entry.

I dont know if this is a unity thing, but even though I was actively in the scene i still had a mouse cursor over it which was distracting.

I also didnt really understand what we were doing other than shoot zombies.

Before I realized we were fighting zombie things, I was preparing to come comment that the body on the desk was wiggling but I guess it makes sense now :)

Nice job.

The Depths of Science by Trusty 2021-04-28T17:13:22Z

I went back and tried again, maybe I was going crazy the first time. Cursor disappeared fine. Dont mind me!

Well done :)

Tap Trick by Salman_Shh 2021-04-28T15:02:06Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I enjoyed the game. I did keep getting into situations where I would hit a bumper (which apparently rockets you away from it?) and it shot me to the edge of the level and then I would fall in the water, I am not sure if that was intention or not.

I liked the art style, though I feel like the camera could have been pulled back a little bit more to show where you were going.

Nice work.

MENACING MINER by Divagated 2021-04-28T16:59:09Z

Looks like you have a nice core loop here, good risk reward system of getting gas vs fighting things shooting at you.

Some checkmarks or level differentiation would help as you pointed out, maybe thats where your shop mechanic would come in.

The art and sound was decent, would love to have a bit of background music.

Nice job!

Deep Dish Delivery by shaner421 2021-04-27T04:02:21Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I really liked your character model and enjoyed the martial arts style.

I couldnt figure out the puzzle to get through the book case. I see you have some solutions here but didn't see that before I played the game.

I liked the art style.

The roll was nice, but the jump felt a little floaty to me.

Nice work!

Wellfell by Kylazaur 2021-04-27T03:06:40Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I thought your entry was wacky and nice and light hearted. I liked Mona's voice over at the end though it was a little hard to hear.

I was able to make it a few times but its pretty tough due to how quickly you fall and how big your body is. At one point I took enough damage that just my head was left and that was surprisingly easier.

Nice work!

INNER DEMONS by Wanooknox 2021-04-28T02:46:17Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I enjoyed the game, I played through 3 or 4 layers of the boss but wasnt able to beat it. The shield deflection was frustrating because of how it curved, so you had to hit it pretty exactly to reflect the projectile where you wanted. It was also frustrating that if you were moving sometimes the reflections didnt work.

I liked the bullet hell patterns and difficulty.

Nice work on a simple concept!

Diary of Sedah by azagaya 2021-04-28T16:33:22Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I enjoyed the art and animation and the torch mechanic. I wasn't able to figure out combat. I was right click and he would drop his torch to the ground, but it didnt seem to affect the bats at all. I might have been doing something wrong.

I think you could bring the audio volume up a tad as well. I was thinking when I started lighting the standing torches "It would be cool if you could hear it when you light the last one so you know the gate opened." And you could hear it, it was just pretty low.

Other than that seemed liked a solid entry.

Nice work!

The Deepest Dungeon by Susumu Asaga 2021-04-27T21:33:10Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

Loved the graphics, everything looks so good and coherent. Didn't expect it to be a clicker game by looking at it, that was a fun surprise.

It feels silly asking for more difficulty because thats not how clicker type games work.

Definitely one of the more unique entries ive tried.

Nice work!

Decisive Maneuver by bernard-bumblebutt 2021-04-28T15:16:19Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

This was well done. Enjoyed how it felt like a complete experience. The graphics and audio were clean and well used.

I liked the depth lines as you descended, and that you had to use real left / right steering right than just magically strafing.

Great job!

Happy submarine by Rubyes 2021-04-28T16:40:33Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

Hello fellow submariner. I liked your submarine art, was cute. The missile was good too. I feel like they could have fired a little quicker, and adding a bit of animation would go a long way.

It was neat you were able to build out an update mechanic with currency, well done there.

I also liked that the enemies got harder as you got deeper.

Nice work!

Space Dwarf by DesertMaw 2021-04-28T22:10:41Z

The graphics were neat and movement and shooting was smooth for the most part.

I think some sort of reward or pickup would have helped motivation for killing the enemies.

Also when switching levels I thought the game was crashing, there was quite a long pause. Just a heads up.

Nice work!

Gaze into the Deeper by TureGrappa 2021-04-28T03:05:08Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I enjoyed your artwork. Animating an 8 direction would have been nice but obviously more work. Your character was cute.

Environment also looked good.

Didnt really understand the potions in the middle of the spikes. I also led an enemy onto the spikes to see if it would hurt them but it didnt which was sad.

Movement and mechanics felt solid.

Nice job!

Fare Well by alanxoc3 2021-04-28T15:20:05Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

Nice simple concept, well executed.

I found the controls confusing initially, and playing on PC any time Im asked to use X and Z to do things thats immediately weird. But thats a personal preference.

The graphics and audio were solid, really nice pixel presentation.

I didnt make it that far, but I liked what you did here.

Great job!

Descend by DevParty 2021-04-28T17:06:58Z

Fun little game here, simple mechanic well executed. The stalagmites were especially hard to dodge. I made it to the timed area and then died.

The visuals were simple but good. Some more animation wouldnt have gone amiss, but I know thats hard with something so small.

Audio was simple and good as well.

Nice work.

An Unexpected Mishap in Naval Mine Cove by Bea 2021-04-28T02:19:03Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I really enjoyed your entry. I think some sort of a minimap would have been a nice touch, so you didnt have to be 100% reactive, or maybe a beneficial thing you could run into so everything wasn't negative

Loved the art and music.

Nice work!

CRASH Pit by E.E-Wick 2021-04-28T03:14:53Z

Very cool project.

I didnt think I would play it as long as I did, but the upgrade mechanic really kept bringing me back. Powerful feedback loop there being able to earn upgrades.

The controls of the plane were easy to understand satisfying. I liked the different shooting options on the mouse, all very easy to track.

The sounds were good. Some background music would have been cool.

Nice work!

Tank Knight: LD48 Tactics by KyleTheCoder 2021-04-27T00:56:58Z

Hi Kyle,

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I played through a few boards and while there were a few issues, mechanically this seems like a nice base to a tactics setup. You have turn based, tile based movement setup, units with different abilities and stats, win conditions for boards etc.

These kinds of games can be tough for jams compared to smaller arcade style games because you often have to invest time in systems work layered upon systems work for the complexity and richness to shine through.

There were a few things I was surprised by that I didn't expect, for example you can move on the same tile as an enemy and also that the attack ablility is an AOE for adjacent tiles. I was able to use these two facts to kill quite a few rats.

Re: the theme I assume that the intention is that were going deeper and deeper into this castle? I am not quite sure if I picked this up correctly. I think I was in a sewer at some point, and then by some water, and then maybe some lava? I am not sure.

Lastly, after getting so many abilities the UI starts to trail off the screen, so something to look at there.

Nice job, looks like it must have been a ton of work especially solo!

Nice Fall by Nice Gear Games 2021-04-28T13:34:06Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I beat that pesky computer. Props for having an AI opponent and a PvP, that was a really nice touch.

The jump felt a little floaty, but then when we got to falling I felt like one thing to make it more challenging would be to add more jump obstacles since you are so focused on going down that having to go up more might trip people up.

Also, I liked the simple background music, but the bird chirping effect or whatever it was was super loud, so might want to check the volume levels on that.

I liked that you had moving platforms and also the brick platforms that disappeared, very cool.

I also thought if I landed on the opponent it would hinder them but that didnt seem to be the case, so something you might consider.

Last thought: Once I pulled ahead of the opponent I had no idea where he was. Would be cool to have some sort of an indicator of who was winning and also how close to the end you were. Just a thought.

Nice job!

Nice Fall by Nice Gear Games 2021-04-28T14:09:52Z

Might be my mistake, I thought they were only getting dizzy from running into bats but maybe because they were already dizzy from hitting a bat me landing on them seemed to have no effect.

No worries, and I totally understand on your other comments as well, only so many hours in the day. Nice job!

Tropical Singer by Kevin S 2021-04-28T15:46:58Z

Nice job!

One of the more original concepts in this jam, if not in the greater gamescape.

I enjoyed the interface graphics (the keys to press etc). I didnt understand the picture of the guys face (which at one point turned into a skull). Were you trying to dictate which part of your head singing that key utilizes? It didnt seem to have a gameplay impact so just confused me.

My main comment is this would have been enormously better if there was an audible beat. I liked the procedural music and found it mostly pleasant, but would have loved a beat to help get into the songs and to drive the rhythm. Thats what its about right?

Anyways, just a thought.

Thanks for participating.

More than Deep by SoftGround 2021-04-27T20:53:25Z

Thanks for participating in the jam.

Was a solid entry. Would have loved some music. Controls were easy to use / understand, but could have used more variation or difficulty in the level generation.

I kept thinking the openings were going to get narrower and narrower but didnt happen.

Nice job.

Rootss by antonishig 2021-04-28T03:17:33Z

Thanks for participating.

I had a really tough time controlling the map, it was scrolling very crazily whether i used arrow keys or the mouse.

I also didnt understand how to interact with the plant, so not sure what I was supposed to be doing.

The graphics and audio were simple but pleasant.

Nice work.

Little Mother by Save Sloth Studios 2021-04-27T20:35:05Z

Well that was certainly an experience. I'm still not sure what I chose at the end. I chose to live, but then everyone seemed to be dead.

I also am not sure who killed everyone, so I might have missed it.

I loved the art and animation.

Nice job creeping me out! :)

Mariana by mart 2021-04-28T17:24:32Z

Thanks for contributing to the jam!

So I died to a shark. Which is maybe karma for all the people dying to sharks in my game hah. I really liked your wildlife art, looked really good.

I did see a stringray swimming backwards, so you might have some sprite flipping to check out.

The speargun / harpoon mechanic was the star of the show for me. Felt very satisfying to shoot, good animation on impact. The diver him/herself kind of fell flat especially with no animation and facing the screen.

Some thoughts: Would be interesting to be able to use the spear to pull yourself down as well, so shoot a wall. Maybe make it take a moment to unattach so youd want to use it only when you were safe.

One other thought would be to try and add some more life or variety to the level design.

All in all a fun entry, nice work!

Adventure: Depths & Dangers by yulotomorrow 2021-04-28T14:36:38Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I made it to the end, though the bed puzzle almost had me quit... not quite sure how I figured it out but I managed to get through.

I like the graphics, they were cute. But a bit of animation would have put it over the top.

The music was pleasant.

The gameplay itself was pretty basic, but you put it together in a nice experience so well done there.

Nice work!

MinerClicker by eps 2021-04-28T16:50:47Z

Thanks for participating in the jam.

Excellent job! Was a fun one screen game, clear mechanics, feedback, visuals etc.

Quite challenging, I wasn't able to get them all.

I dont really have any suggestions or constructive criticism, way to go!

MinerClicker by eps 2021-04-28T17:10:45Z

I respect that you're working with your family. I did the programming for my game, my friend did the art but my 13 year old son did all the music and audio. Was fun to work as a family.

The Camera Is Watching by Pink Spaceman 2021-04-27T01:12:56Z

Thanks for submitting to the jam!

Like some other reviewers, I enjoyed the art style of the cop and the robbers.

Kind of reminded me of packman especially with some of the level design.

It was unclear to me the right thing to do on the second screen. My robbers made it into the vault but didnt pick up any of the money at the end.

I did manage to get out and they seemed to have money but it wasnt clear exactly what was happening.

I also clicked on the cameras but it wasnt clear to me what effect they were having.

Nice job!

Deeper and Deeper in the Woods by Mizatorian 2021-04-28T14:08:13Z

Thanks for participating in the jam!

Best part of the game was when I heard the sound effects and went "That is that person's voice!" Hah.

Once you figure out you needed to wait at the gate to hear the sound effect the game became trivial, maybe think of some way to add some more difficulty.

Nice work!

Deep Sewers by Turtle Games 2021-04-28T17:17:30Z

Thanks for contributing to the jam!

I feel like you have a solid base mechanic here, the vacuuming worked well and was really easy to use.

Keyboard controls were solid. No issues there.

Setting was a little wacky but that might be what you were going for :)

Nice work!
