Cute game! The AI player legit almost beat me. Nice work!

baarmaboi 2021-04-26 19:05

Simple enough! Works from start to finish, controls well and its nice to see pvp!

dikopr0s 2021-04-26 19:28

I like a competitive part of the gameplay, but some progress bar might be a nice touch

ssh-randy 2021-04-27 04:42

i enjoyed it. was super fun, and comeback mechanics definitely made it more fair. it's impossible to dodge the birds though as you go down!

scruffylooking2121 2021-04-27 06:17

Really easy to figure out what to do. Was really fun racing the Computer, but would love to try with another player. You might try making a slightly different "stunned" tweeting sound for each player. You might consider giving a second of invulnerability once waking up from a crash. It was annoying to get a double-hit without being able to do anything about it. Nice job!

mrscythe 2021-04-27 11:22

Pretty funny game. It's always fun to be able to stall the other player by jumping on his head. Those "breaking" platforms were nice aswell, making it so that you can always catch up with the other.

daspikeyboss 2021-04-27 12:48

HaHa! I loved it. Really Fun. I was neck and neck with the computer the whole way down. Great Job!!

cubex 2021-04-27 14:20

The jumping is kind of inconsistent, but apart from that, the game was really fun!

tris250 2021-04-27 14:45

Simple and intuitive game, really cool and funny, the graphics are beautiful and the character excellent.

My only regret is that we cannot play with the arrow keys in player mode 1 (since I have an azerty keyboard, it is difficult for me to play).

There is a problem with the display of the game, but I know that it is not easy to set the display with UnityWebGL and I will not take this into account in my note.

Apart from that, it’s an excellent game that deserves the highest grade.

itooh 2021-04-27 14:46

Great work on the AI! It's not too dumb, but also not too strong. A balanced opponent! It makes the competition interesting even on solo. I guess it must be pretty fun on multi as well. I enjoyed the different animations, especially the little dance at the end. My main issue would be the volume of sound playing when we are stunned, pretty loud compared to everything else (and given the fact that we hear it a lot). But other than that, it's a nice game!

woergbi 2021-04-27 15:59

Fun, little game. I'll make sure to try the PvP mode when I can.

eugenik 2021-04-27 19:13

Feels like a complete game! Very cool!.

fyslexicduck 2021-04-28 04:59

Fun game the falling on your head really makes for neck to neck races! Sometimes the controls would bug out and you wouldnt be able to jump and the volume of the sound that plays when you're dazed was a bit jarring but overall a very fun little game!

lifeforce 2021-04-28 05:02

Cool game overall, but it would be nice to have a depth indicator to be able to compare where you are exactly vs. the opponent.

thebox193 2021-04-28 05:06

The funny sound they make when they get hurt :joy:

squimmy 2021-04-28 10:09

This is good! The visuals and audio are simple and effective, and the gameplay is intuitive and engaging. The most impressive thing is the way so many little systems in the game work together to ensure the losing player doesn't get left behind. But it always feels natural and intuitive, and -- most importantly -- fair. It never feels like you got hit by a "blue shell", so to speak.

The only thing I think is missing is a sound effect for when you get stunned by the thorns. The first few times it happened to me, I didn't realise what had happened so I thought perhaps I had fallen too far or something... It didn't take long to work out what was happening, but compared to how obvious and intuitive the rest of the game felt, this moment of confusion stood out to me.

nice-gear-games 2021-04-28 11:05

Thank you everyone for your feedback!

@ssh-randy Yes, you are right about it being impossible to avoid the bats, and I want to adjust this in future. Thank you for pointing it out!

@scruffylooking2121 @itooh @fyslexicduck Thank you so much for your detailed feedback! I am working on making sliders for sound effects so that it's less annoying, and making the chirping sound effect shorter. I think your idea of a second of invincibility is also great, and I really want to implement this. Thanks again!

@tris250 Thank you so much for your feedback! I totally forgot about making a mode for AZERTY/QWERTZ keyboard layouts. That is a good idea of being able to select to use the arrow keys for 1P. Thank you so much for your feedback!

@lifeforce That is a great idea about the depth indicator. I wanted to put it in, but I didn't have time before the jam ended. This is something I want to add once the jam ends.

@squimmy Thank you so much for your feedback as always!! I want to add sound effects for the thorns and for the sound of the bricks breaking, because as you say, it's not immediately clear what is going on in those two instances. Thanks again and be sure to play the updated version when it's released!! ^_^

jonathan-turner 2021-04-28 13:34

Thanks for participating in the jam!

I beat that pesky computer. Props for having an AI opponent and a PvP, that was a really nice touch.

The jump felt a little floaty, but then when we got to falling I felt like one thing to make it more challenging would be to add more jump obstacles since you are so focused on going down that having to go up more might trip people up.

Also, I liked the simple background music, but the bird chirping effect or whatever it was was super loud, so might want to check the volume levels on that.

I liked that you had moving platforms and also the brick platforms that disappeared, very cool.

I also thought if I landed on the opponent it would hinder them but that didnt seem to be the case, so something you might consider.

Last thought: Once I pulled ahead of the opponent I had no idea where he was. Would be cool to have some sort of an indicator of who was winning and also how close to the end you were. Just a thought.

Nice job!

nice-gear-games 2021-04-28 13:47

@jonathan-turner Thank you so much for your detailed feedback! I really like the idea of adding more obstacles to make the player go back up, and as you said I want to add sliders for the music/sound effects and create a map for where you/opponent are in the course (I didn't have time to implement these, but I want to add them after the jam ends). I was wondering about when you said you couldn't hinder your opponent, did they keep moving after you landed on them? They're supposed to stop and do the dizzy animation (that's what the chirping is) so I think it might be a bug if that didn't happen. Thanks again for playing!!

jonathan-turner 2021-04-28 14:09

Might be my mistake, I thought they were only getting dizzy from running into bats but maybe because they were already dizzy from hitting a bat me landing on them seemed to have no effect.

No worries, and I totally understand on your other comments as well, only so many hours in the day. Nice job!

dergamer 2021-04-28 14:22

Very cool game, especially the Computer Player is pretty fun to play againstπŸ‘

jetthesimon 2021-04-28 14:29

I am impressed you have CPU! This is a pretty good game. You did a great job on scope as you definitely handed us a fairly finished product.

The hurt sound was kind of grating on the ears as it was way louder than the rest, so I would turn that down a bit. A bit of advice I heard was if a player is going to hear something a lot, you don't want it to be turned up too loud or be too long.

Good job! Fun game! Cute art! Exclamation mark!

koalatte 2021-04-28 14:35

i really liked falling, it was satisfying to fall for long distances. the AI is tough  would love a devlog on how the AI was created

arttu-halonen 2021-04-28 15:11

Fun little game! The falling was a bit too fast to really make informed decisions on where to aim. Or at least my response time wasn't quite fast enough. But cool game, keep it up!

spacecadet 2021-04-28 18:34

Awesome little game there. Didn't try the multiplayer but playing against cpu was really satisfying

tomtomgome 2021-04-28 20:12

Multiplayer game ! Nice touch ! Not a huge fan of the art and sound design BUT they go very well together and don't feel out of place. Anyway it's fun to play

totteriludum 2021-04-28 20:45

Nice to see some split-screen projects being made! Playing against the CPU was fun, and the game felt quite polished. Perhaps the game would benefit from lowering gravity? It can be quite hard to dodge the enemies when the character falls very fast, and makes parts of the game pretty luck-based. Overall, good fun! Well done!

pabulum 2021-04-28 20:56

Great job on design and balance! It was always really close between me and the AI. Bopping them on the head was super fun too. The only thing that would have been cool if u had had time is some idication of how far down you are or maybe a "only x meters to go" sign or something to ratchet up the tension at the end. Also untitled goose game has taught us that a deidcated honk button is mandatory for all bird games :p

octopoid 2021-04-28 20:58

I tried to play both sides at the same time and it felt like I was about to have a stroke 7/5

deedose 2021-04-29 06:17

It is a fun little game . Saldy , I had nobody to play with , so I played with the computer . I find it a nice twist of the common idea to fall in a hole as deep as possible . The breaking platforms give to the last player a chaance to catch up . Great work !

lorwon 2021-04-29 08:01

Wow i really enjoyed your game ! it's very fun ! The mechanic of jumping over the second player head is really funny I will love to play that against other people :) Your game have a very good potential keep working man ! Good job :)

marcoming 2021-04-29 09:21

Nice enjoyable game, I played against the AI and I managed to beat it :) the only suggestion is to add a way to show how far from the goal you are. A part from that, a very nice and enjoyable game! good work!

save-sloth-studios 2021-04-29 15:20

This is definitely one of my favorite games this jam. I really like how it was balanced, even against the AI. My main complaint would be that the sound effects were way too loud compared to the music, but overall this was a very fun game!

tengusheath 2021-04-29 18:57

Impressive that you were able to add a CPU to play against

gagapete 2021-04-29 20:33

Nice game, I would love to play this with some friends but the AI is a well balanced alternative. Due to the speed it seems to be impossible to use the _fall on opponents head to stun them_ efficiently.

jin9310 2021-04-30 07:34

Very nice entry. I wonder good the game would be against human oponent. But even against AI it is really nice. The only thing that I would change is, that the game feels based on randomness rather than skill (as most of the time you donΒ΄t know where you gonna land), which is ok, but overall in this kind of games it could lead to frustration on the players side. Since it is a race I would like to be able to build my skill overtime. But that is just my personal taste and overall really nice game jam entry. Good job!

rob-parker 2021-04-30 18:27

Really cute little game! I was doing so well against the CPU and then it overtook me at the last fall cause i hit a thorny bush!

alexascher 2021-04-30 18:50

Good pvp balance

rewzu 2021-04-30 22:57

Really neat entry. The AI is quite capable. Ability to adjust game length would be great! Good job! :)

mlho7 2021-05-02 18:56

Idea is cool and game is fun, versus mode is great, very well done.

godsboss 2021-05-02 20:04

I did not expect the AI to be so hard, but I managed to beat it. Does it know the level beforehand? Sometimes, the moves were suspicious.

nice-gear-games 2021-05-03 05:34

Thank you everyone for playing and for your feedback! I really appreciate it. I have slightly updated the game with some of the fixes you have recommended. If you are interested in trying it out, the updated version is here:

https://unityroom.com/games/nicefall

The itch link at the top of this page should still lead to the original LD version of the game.

@totteriludum @jin9310 Thank you for your feedback re: gravity! I am going to try to make the other elements of the game (esp. the bats) less luck-based so that you keep the same speed while falling but hopefully making it less luck-based.

@rewzu That's a good idea about adjusting the game length. Perhaps in a future remake I will make other courses with varying lengths and different obstacles. That seems like it could be fun. Thank you again for the idea!

@pabulum The honk button!! How could I forget!!

@godsboss The AI is DEFINITELY not watching and learning your every move ;D

rolle 2021-05-04 17:06

Wheeew! I won! Quite fun game and I think it would be more fun PvP. For me I think it was a right balance of randomness with the "AI"-player. Also liked the graphics, the animations and the happy tunes! Made me think back to the childhood and the "retro"-games I used to play.

Congrats on making a fun game for this jam! All thumbs up! :duck:

jaiden-gerig 2021-05-05 03:29

Played both versions, I like the improvements you made, They make it a lot easier for the player to parse what is happening. I really liked the retro sounds and music, and the pixel art really fit the tone you were going for as well. Overall, I think it's a fun game for what it is, it just feels like it needs a little more spice.

vodzik 2021-05-17 12:02

Nice balancing mechanics. Keeps game interesting, and prevent's one player to have big advantage over other.
