LD44 — Your life is currency

City33 by Mr_Field 2019-05-01T23:24:16Z

This is fantastic. It really is crushingly difficult, but I love the art style. It was brilliant fun just exploring and knocking over the cash machines, and the seamless building entering was really slick and satisfying. One of my absolute favourites so far!

Hight Point by tangiblegames 2019-05-02T18:12:19Z

Good job, seemed very simple at first but as the speed picks up and especially once the second bar appears gets quite tricky. When one of them starts to fall outside the range recovering it without losing the other one is surprisngly hard. Like the addition of the stories too, and the music suits nicely. Great work!

Rising Dawn - First Blood: It's Brunchtime by AfroAnt 2019-05-02T14:38:29Z

Nice work! Some interesting ideas in here, I liked the use of the alley for stealth mechanics. I did find it tricky once I got to the daytime section, there were so many villagers about and it was difficult to consume one without alerting all the others. I enjoyed my time with this one, great job!

The Branch by Poffle 2019-05-02T13:11:36Z

@refraction @cocapasteque yeah, you're quite right, it wasn't entirely clear who you were at any given moment. I think in retrospect there should have been some kind of onscreen name badge and objective to make that more obvious. Thanks for your kind words though, glad you enjoyed it! :grinning:

The Branch by Poffle 2019-05-02T13:14:11Z

@afroant Thanks, that means a lot! I wrote the eye shader/controller and @rodobodolfo took care of all the lipsyncing for the mouth. I wish we'd had a bit more time for actual gameplay, or even to finish the throwing minigame properly, but that deadline is a harsh mistress! Thanks for your review!

Hell's Business by Solah 2019-05-01T16:52:36Z

Nice game! In my opinion the sword swing could do with being a little quicker and the reach a little longer, and the movement controls a little less immediate - trying to get into the right spot to hit the enemies is a little fiddly right now.

Just FYI, the web version has a couple of minor issues - Left Alt doesn't work (in Firefox at least), as it focuses on the menu bar.

Good job overall though!

Devil Bank by techsec 2019-05-01T21:13:11Z

As @sunnray says, you should zip up all the files from the build and upload that. Currently this can't be played.

Devil Bank by techsec 2019-05-02T01:12:04Z

Yep, that's all working. Good job, it's an interesting concept. I found it sometimes tricky to work out what kind of offer they would acccept, I would suggest maybe having more of a back and forth with each person - make an offer, it's rejected with a reason, then you get to make another offer. Still, I did enjoy reading the information about the person and trying to think of a reasonable offer for them - great job! :grinning:

Cards Against Sanctity by Corqi 2019-05-02T14:43:58Z

Good job! I liked the use of years as the currency. As you say, it is a little confusing until you understand the rules, but that's true of all card games. If you carry it on some on screen prompts would be helpful for getting started. Certainly unique though and I enjoyed my time playing it!

Robots in Hell by Andreadbx 2019-05-02T15:04:01Z

Great job, I had fun with this one!

Beyond the Slot by Beebo Studios 2019-05-01T17:45:44Z

Great job, funny and premise, and love that you found time to add secrets!

Chesty the Treasure by Lord9000 2019-05-02T11:47:15Z

This is great! Intersting twist, love the overall ambience, chesty is cute and the music fits pefectly.

I'm not sure the turn based nature of it fits that well, especially with having to re-press the key each time and the time limit, and there seemed to be a few bugs with the knights, but overall I really enjoyed this one!

Slave: Unpaid by Tednesday 2019-05-01T18:25:56Z

Fun and interesting, great job! I'd love to see an expanded version of this with a few more job types and stats to balance.

The Ball's Path by EricRou 2019-05-01T23:01:43Z

This really does get challenging! Fun to play, and the visuals, while basic, are effective for gameplay. Great job!

Tic-Tac-Run! by mvasko2 2021-05-09T14:36:39Z

This is really good fun! Easy to get into, controls are responsive, and the music is great, I replayed it a ton of times without even thinking about it, just because it felt right and sounded good.

If I had to criticise anything, I'd just say the random generation could perhaps do with slightly more consistency, as odd as that sounds - truth be told my best time was very much made possible by the benevolence of the gods of RNG! The graphics are fairly basic but actually really clear - both the tic tac and the obstancles stand out really clearly from the level, and each other - I'd much rather this than really fancy materials that blend together.

The leaderboard for a game like this was a really great addition as well, as I could immediately see just how awful I was at it 😂 jokes aside, I played on for a bit to try and get into the top half at least, which I think without it, I wouldn't have.

Overall though, this a really great compo entry, I had a lot of fun!

Glowstick Run by karlipoppins 2021-05-02T20:28:54Z

Web version wasn't working for me on FF - the dev console contains this:

> Uncaught (in promise) ReferenceError: SharedArrayBuffer is not defined

> Godot https://v6p9d9t4.ssl.hwcdn.net/html/3712623/index.js:9

> doInit https://v6p9d9t4.ssl.hwcdn.net/html/3712623/index.js:604

(Full list with warnings and so on)

Screenshot 2021-05-02 213502.png

I had a bug I couldn't reproduce locally on mine, so I know how frustrating it is - hopefully that helps track it down!

Played the download version instead - wasn't what I was expecting! Very unique, I found it quite hard to get the hang of, but it felt really satisfying once I did. The lighting looks really good as well, and the music fits really well - great entry, really enjoyed this

DEEper by Devastus 2021-04-28T21:16:11Z

This is great, one of the only ones I played through a load of times! Really smooth controls and nice vector graphics, and the audio fits perfectly - good job!

Morning Shift by Iluvatar 2021-04-28T11:36:57Z

This is fantastic, love the classic adventure game feel - great job!

Dome Romantik by Rongo Matane 2021-04-28T21:40:54Z

Played this through until there was nothing more to buy then played it for another 20 minutes after that, really satisfying and fun. Definitely my favourite arcade style game by far - fantastic job!

The plot chickens by JPiolho 2021-04-30T20:54:44Z

Really enjoyed this, love the cute voxel style, it was nice and refreshing to play something like this. Great job with all the branching dialogue and events as well!

Loach Dive by Manan 2021-04-29T23:10:22Z

Ahh, weather loaches are awesome! This was really fun, I didn't figure out the controls immediately, I was trying to flop around using nothing but the boost at first, which wasn't really working as the AI tadpoles do such a good job of scurrying away. Once I got it was great fun zipping about though - nice graphics and sound, great job!

Sonder (a story) by Noble Robot 2021-04-28T20:45:55Z

This is excellent, really fantastic atmosphere to it. Just to make you aware, super minor but the cursor is unlocked rather than constrained, which makes it a bit awkward getting at stuff at the edge of the screen on multi monitor setups. But loved this entry, great job!

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-28T11:27:42Z

Hey @dikopr0s, that's odd - you are locked in place for the 3 lines of dialogue that play, but it should free you up after that! I'll test the build and let you know.

EDIT: Seems to work for me - are you using keyboard/mouse or controller?

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-28T12:41:17Z

@endssgamesstudio @devparty I've donwloaded the itch version and controls work for me, seems like there is a problem affecting some people only :( could I ask if you're using mouse/keyboard or controller?

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-28T12:53:36Z

@devparty thank you - is there any chance you could send me your log file please? I can't reproduce locally.. The log file is located at *C:\Users(your username)\AppData\LocalLow\Baffled Crab\Tall Tales*

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-28T12:54:42Z

@divford Thank you! :) Yeah, that doesn't sound right, there shouldn't be any situations where you have to relaunch the game, you sohuld always be able to get to the end - I'll try a play through with bad responses on the current build now, thanks

Edit: The dialogue hanging up was indeed a bug! Fixed and patched on itch.

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-28T15:18:25Z

@dikopr0s @endssgamesstudio @devparty Hey guys, thanks for reporting those control issues earlier - still haven't quite got to the bottom of them, seems like it's having trouble loading xinput dlls for some reason, but just wanted to let you know, we've added a workaround now:

ControlIssues.png

If you enable this option in the menu it should let you try the game - just wanted to let you know!

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-28T18:40:51Z

@dikopr0s Ah no, I'm sorry about that, thanks for checking again. I've removed XInput entirely now, which *really* should solve this, as the controls are now just using the standard Unity system.

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-29T15:18:04Z

Hey @andrewkennedy - thanks for the play through and the review! Funny you mention that actually, I was saying on the Sunday how much time a skip dialogue button would have saved during testing, turns out everyone would have preferred that 😂 - will definitely add next time!

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-29T20:03:49Z

@dikopr0s Ahhh no, I really thought we'd got it this time 😣 thanks for your kind words, and multiple patient attempts at trying this, much appreciated - really frustrating we couldn't get it running for you - Deep Sleep looks really interesting, we'll all definitely be giving it a go at the weekend! 😀

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-30T09:16:26Z

@aquasheep3000 Ahh, we must have hidden him too well!! I've added a note to page now with a hint, basically go to the green, look for buildings which (possibly) look like barns, and you have to go down a dirt track to find him. Thanks for the play and review though, we'll be checking out Perchance to Dream after work tonight!

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-30T09:20:04Z

@manan ah, thanks, really pleased to hear you enjoyed that bit - getting that well scene working properly was a labour of love haha

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-30T14:01:55Z

@thatmanrobin Thanks for your play and review, much appreciated!

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-30T14:08:21Z

@karlipoppins Thank you very much! To be honest late on the 2nd day I think we were all wondering if we'd bit off more than we could chew, but it's amazing what an immovable deadline will do!

I'm a big fan of spamming glowsticks in Terraria, so looking forward to trying Glowstick Run tonight!

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-05-02T22:21:42Z

Hey @leekanarchism, thanks for the review! I actually wanted to add some random dialogue lines to the cricketers, commenting on the endless runs, but just ran out of time.

A location for the farmer was actually added in after the original village was made, and I think in retrospect taking the time to redesign the village would have saved some trouble. The map is a great point, and I just genuinely didn't think about it - I think because I knew my way around it just didn't spring to mind.

The music I think is true as well - that one I *did* notice, but assumed it was because I'd heard it over and over. I seperated the music slider into seperate "main theme" and "character theme" sliders, and turned it off - but then with it off, I forgot about it again! I think in future I'll try and do any open sections with environmental noise.

Anyway, thanks again for your review, glad to hear you enjoyed your time!

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-05-05T22:22:05Z

Hey @curtis-pelissier, really sorry to hear you've had trouble. :frowning2: When we first launched we had a fairly common issue with the controls not working, we thought we'd narrowed it down. I removed usage of XInput entirely, and it seemed to help, but sadly it does still seem to be causing problems in rare cases. Unfortunately I've not managed to find a PC where I can recreate the issue, and I'm somewhat at a loss. If I do have a breakthrough and update it / release a 1.1, I'll send you a message though! Thanks for the (attempted!) play!

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-05-07T17:06:14Z

@curtis-pelissier @dane-tesla I believe we have now fixed this!! It appears all of this was caused by the dictonary of dialogue lines, which was using current culture for the ID lookups - this was causing an exception when it went to retrieve the first line of dialogue, and although this was being handled, the catch was causing it to skip past the section which re-enabled the controls...

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-05-09T13:52:25Z

@mvasko2 :open_mouth:

Thank you *-so-* much for posting this log, this is actually the first time I've seen any debug information for this!! I'd already narrowed this down by user to a culture/locale issue, I can't believe I'd overlooked float.Parse in the lipsyncing... I've just checked in a new version which uses invariant culture to parse these values, I don't suppose I could trouble you for a quick retest at all?

(I'm definitely going to add an old PC set up on different culture settings for testing next time!!)

Thanks also for your review, really glad you enjoyed it, and all great points on the critique. The size of the town definitely got away from me in the end, there was a moment on the Saturday when I really realised it and I wish now I'd found the time to redesign things a little - duly noted for next time!

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-05-09T14:24:18Z

@mvasko2 Ahh, that's amazing, thank you :grinning: I'd nearly given up hope on tracking this down!!

I might actually be able to concentrate on a v1.1 now!

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-05-11T20:21:26Z

Thanks @kpded, really pleased to hear you enjoyed it - and glad you like the wheels! haha

After the model of the truck came out as such an artistic masterpiece I felt it only appropriate to make it truly photorealistic 😂

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-05-14T20:09:08Z

Hey @gildar76, thank you for the play and review!

Submerged by vanLeiden 2021-04-28T16:17:32Z

This is really fun! Atmosphere is great, love the use of the lighting - great job!

Lemon Biscuits for Tulip by miwikiwi 2021-04-28T21:09:49Z

I wasn't sure what to expect, and it still wasn't this! Really nice little game, lovely style, good job!

Last penny by Advarsky 2021-04-30T20:42:50Z

Love the art style on this, especially the little intro scene, got a really unique look to it. Music is really nice as well, fits perfectly. Controls could use tightening up, but honestly the 'chill arcade' style was a refreshing change of pace after playing so many Ludum games recently. Good job!

Blackout by Frasse 2021-04-29T21:27:17Z

Wow, didn't expect to see a proper graphic adventure on here! The twist was really good, I thought it was the ending! Fantastic graphics and sound, and a really decent length as well. I'd give you some constructive criticism, but I honestly can't think of anything!

The Tourist by Frostfall 2021-04-28T18:59:03Z

The ending was great, was just settling in to bamboo facts, really caught me unaware. Performance did cause a few problems for me as well, I would assume static batching or gpu instancing might do a good quick job of improving that. Loved the atmosphere though, great job!

Nice Fall by Nice Gear Games 2021-04-28T20:58:35Z

I tried to play both sides at the same time and it felt like I was about to have a stroke 7/5

Dive & Dig by andrewkennedy 2021-04-28T19:43:25Z

Great twist on the take, and really fun to play, controls very smooth and surprisingly challenging to keep going for a long time. The humour in the writing is nice as well, and the graphics and music suit really well - really solid entry, well done!
