Pretty good art. Feel like moving and skip dialogue should not be on the same button :p. Die from temp at 364m.
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD48 → Dive & Dig

Pretty good art. Feel like moving and skip dialogue should not be on the same button :p. Die from temp at 364m.
The dialogues were hilarious. When I died the third time and it said "IT WORKS!" I got confused, until I read "I mean, it was working until you totaled it" 🤣🤣🤣 Fun!
Wonderful graphics and sound! The effects feel really crunchy and the music really drives me to keep playing. Feels like the base of a very satisfying arcadey game.
I can totally see people getting tripped up with how the tutorial goes back to the total screen to continue, so be ready for some confused comments!
very good looking games and nice story, love it <3
Very cool, bonus points for combining mining and diving. It'd be cool to see some more goals, like ore / enemies etc, but still fun.
Although the sounnd is beautiful it didn't match the scene. Well made graphics
Very cool to bounce between the screens. I never expected it and had a great moment when it happened for the first time (and then the double UI started to make sense). Two ways at going deeper!
Love the art and color-coding of the different modes.
I was also surprised how much just two different types of blocks added to the gameplay, it was enough to make me really think about my path.
The tutorial could have ended right after breaking through the first time, and I wish it had since going through the dialog was cumbersome.
I kept accidentally skipping the dialog, better to give some time before skipping if it's on the same button as the button the player will be using anyway.
The SFX were nice but the music didn't go well.
Tutorial could have ended after introducing the two modes. Didn't seem to be much difference between the tutorial and "arcade" mode. Having some objective other than not die would be good, things to get more points or recover temperature/oxygen perhaps. At some point I got stuck and got dragged off the top of the screen and "took a wrong turn".
@pvp @ian-kettlewell @impbox @goodgamesjames I hear ya on the dialogue boxes / tutorial. I scrambled to finish the tutorial last-minute and really should have given that more attention. Thanks for the feedback!
@johnnysix I had a lot of that stuff planned, but had to cut it due to time. I started implementing mining lasers, but ended up disabling them in the final build [(Laser Video)](https://imgur.com/s2CAoa4)
I really like the idea of two games breaking into each other like that. The dialogue was great too!
The Graphics look phenomenal! I really enjoyed the idea of combing the 2 main ideas people had lol. I think this game is really great!
Really cool concepts and funny dialogues. The graphics and music are excellent!
Very well made game! Graphics, audio, narrative, polishing, everything is on point here! Congrats, I really liked it!
@jgur When the theme is announced, I usually toss out my first couple ideas because they're very cliche. I had no good ideas though this time around and realized everyone was probably going to make mining games or diving games. I figured I could at least get a laugh out of people (or an eye-roll) by making both.
@andykswong @lajbert Thank you!
Had a lot of fun playing it! Fun concept by switching between sides! Was able to go quite deep until the drill was unable to drill further for some reason (no clue what happened there). The art is beautiful and I love the mood! :v: Congratulations!!
nicely done and executed with the two modes and switching between them. It was a bit diffcult to move and the camera did run out of the screen too quickly and sometimes I was almost ahead of the camera. I skip some dialogues by accident when pressing the button. Music was catchy. Overall really good :)
This is a very well made game. I wish the scroll speed was a bit faster, or that there would be an incentive to drill the rock around the level. But overall a very impressive compo entry. Great job!
The tutorial was so funny, really got me in the first half. Was like "What ? how was I supposed to get oxygen back ? Am I dumb?" Definitely one of this Ludums master of humor ! Really great music and graphics too! Only thing is on the web version for me I got some lags and also there is a lack of feedback when trying to go on the other screen. I was kinda confused on how to go through and could succeed a bit by "brutforcing". Any way, great job!
Really impressive, it got all, good visual, good gameplay and even good story, bravo
I'm guessing this is made in unity? I couldn't really tell from the git files. Oh the first part was the tutorial? I didnt know that. Felt like someone constantly interrupting you. As for the game itself, it was good fun. Some comments I have - why the water doesn't rush into the right side? The temp keeps going up even if i don't drill anything. There might be a bug, clicking in some cases doesnt drill/move. just gets stuck in the rock.
@goutye Yep, I did notice that happens around 300m, and I'm not sure what the culprit is. I wrote the block generation in about 30 minutes, pretty late on Sunday. To be honest, I'm a little surprised it's not _more_ broken
This was a lot of fun, could definitely see this as a full game!
Overall its a very solid game! Like the concept and tutorial (skipping tutorial is a case though). Game lacks some kind of challenge, collectibles or modifiers so the player can make more decisions.
@andrewkennedy if you ever find the bug, don't hesitate to fix it, it's allowed by the rules 😊
Pretty cool game! Could be a nice foundation for something awesome!
Really fun! I love how "Dive" and "Dig" each have slightly different mechanics. I got down to around 780m before I had the same bug that wouldn't let me dig anymore. And as others pointed out, it's really easy to accidentally skip the dialogue. Overall, very enjoyable though.
When The game say "Quick dig through the right wall!" I got confused by what was meant by that and was digging down through the right wall thinking it would get me more air. By try three I figured out what was wanted.
I'm not sure if it's a bug or not, but it seems that sometimes rocks will refuse to be destroyed and I got stuck digging through unbreakable rocks.
You should map the dialogue boxes and drill controls differently so that you don't accidently close the dialogue.
The brief amount of writing was pretty good, if you were aiming for a sort of character who thinks they are better then they really are then you hit that really well.
Your graphics are really good, despite using the same 4 blocks the whole time they never got old. Probably has something to do with constantly swapping them out.
really enjoyed the music, it was nice turning as well. your tutorial was really helpful
Really well done, I had quite some fun playing your game 🙃 I found the art quite nice and the concept of diving and digging really interesting! Great entry 👌
The visuals were really attractive, I think the soft bloom shader punches wayyyy above its weight in effect! I liked that this really felt like two games mashed into one. I think my only suggestion for improvement would be that it's easy to miss dialog due to the controls, so make it so the dialog ignores your input for a second. Great job on this game!
Nicely executed. I felt like it was a little simple mechanically but the mouse based controls were a nice touch. I also hit a bug where Dig wouldn't dig anymore and I'm not quite sure what caused it, but I was able to steer around the rocks giving me the problem and then it started digging again.
The tutorial was good also. Beautiful graphics and aesthetics! Well done.
interesting mechanic, great graphics and audio. Others have already mention this, I find the dialog skipping very disruptive, and having the same control to skip the dialog and drill makes it that sometimes we just skip the dialog when we didn't want to.
Overall nice entry.
Really like your take on the theme and combining the two most popular ways of interpreting it. Fun mechanics and the moving felt nice. I accidentally clicked away a lot of the dialogue, but I liked the sense of humor! :)
Great entry, well done!
@wolfier @shawn-moore @zwodahs @koningmathijs Yeah, the dialogue box skipping was just a poor oversight due to time. When I play, I click and don't let go, which means I never skipped dialogues. As soon as my wife sat down to try it (after the jam ended), I realized she was skipping them too. Oops. I really wish I could fix it, but that doesn't feel within the spirit of the "bug fix" rules.
@goutye @1minatur @1minatur I was able to fix the bug! Doesn't necessarily make the game any more fun, but at least it's not horribly broken haha.
@andrewkennedy As long as you keep the original version up it doesn't matter how many bugs you squash or even if you add new features. The spirit of Ludum Dare is to make a game you can keep making.
For sure, if I decide to take this past the jam, there's lots to fix. In the spirit of following the rules however, I don't want to edit my jam entry while voting is going on:
[Additional Notes for both the Jam and Compo](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/rules) > Certain Bug Fixes are allowed. You can’t add new features, but if something broke or didn’t work correctly as you were finishing up, you can fix this after the deadline. You are asked to highlight the changes you make in your submission (a short change log). You probably wont get a 2nd chance with some players, but at least it wont be a problem for future players.
I don't interpret the dialogue box behavior as a bug, it's just something I ran out of time to do.
I love how you tell the story - It's like having an annoyed passenger in your car next to you. When you did something wrong... "DID YOU JUST RAN OUT OF OXYGEN!" :smirk: I also like playing with that idea, that you only need one mouse button to play the game, that way it will be accessible to more people. The only downside of having one control is, that you click away the dialogs, when you are just pressing the key at the wrong moment. That's something to consider and I wish there was a better solution. But other than that, I hope you had a blast building this game  Can't wait for your entry in the next game jam.
Great twist on the take, and really fun to play, controls very smooth and surprisingly challenging to keep going for a long time. The humour in the writing is nice as well, and the graphics and music suit really well - really solid entry, well done!
I like the concept very much, I like that you have to switch between dive an dig.
Good humor with the dialogues, but I skipped a few by accident, maybe a new button to skip.
The design was great and I had fun playing, good job.
I really enjoyed how the game paced us through the different mechanics. It was a neat way of showing us the game and it was pretty cool seeing how the ship changed every time. The dialog was also pretty hilarious! You did a great job balancing game mechanics with a fun arcade style game. Good job on the ship sprite animations too!
Best. Tutorial. Ever.
Well, I came to really hate the guy yelling at me about his expensive equipment Nice writing there. It took me a little bit to figure out that "Dig through the right wall meant" didn't mean the "Correct" wall as in Red or Blue. And when I brushed against the right wall I was confused why it didn't help. The AHA moment when I figured out what was intended was totally unexpected and made me feel like a genius for figuring it out, despite the snarky trainer's abuse. Thanks for giving me that moment with your game! The music was good, the sound of digging was good. Excellent use of the theme and humor. Fun game!
A novel concept. Took me awhile to figure out, that I need to drill *through* the wall! It was a bit confusing that speech popups are dismissed with the same button as movement is done. But when I got through the initial friction, it was fun! Reminded me of some old arcade games. Sound and art is on spot. Good game!
That's how deep I got:
Screenshot from 2021-04-29 15-49-37.png
@civmaniac Haha wow, you've beat my own high score of 1117
@fictions @scruffylooking2121 I rushed through that tutorial text so late on Sunday, I didn't have enough time to think of a character. I was just channeling my own inner sarcasm haha.
Thank you all for your feedback, suggestions, and kind words!
The dialouge was hilarious but sometimes it just skip my gameflow, maybe you can put that somewhere else does not matter and people can still read if they like, I just want to dive and dig like crazy without being stopped haha. I love the concept and the music too, super innovative. Greatjob!
Very cool concept! I definitely never saw anything like that.
Graphics are nice and so is the music. Controls feel fine. Although I really wish the "drill down" button was not the same as "dismiss dialogue" button, as I often dismissed dialogue by accident and I really didn't want to.
Other than this minor gripe it is a good jam game! This is how deep I got:
Screenshot_6.jpg
Awesome game! Loved the idea of two parallel levels. It was quite hard to control the vehicle using the trackpad, but that's totally my own fault, not yours.
Very nice concept ! I liked the dialogues and the idea of changing screen. There is something to dig. Now as an arcade game it becomes quickly easy and repetitive but there is definitely something to do with this concept.
Also the graphics and sounds are nice !
A really interesting twist on the old "dig as deep as You can" idea. At first I was like "OK, is 80m all I can go?". And thet the game blew my mind (a bit). Everything is great - the graphics, the music. If there is 1 thing to be nitpicky, is the switching between sides - it could switch a bit faster as it seems it is stuck in nowhere.
WOW! I really loved this game! The idea is fantastic and you implemented it very well!
Graphics and music are great. Congrats
Great game, it was intuitive, graphics was on point, so were sounds.
Pretty cool ! The idea of having two gameplays on two screens is quite original, I've seen a lot of diving games and drilling games, but never both at once ! I just wish there was one more mechanic to the game that would give it a bit more challenge, I just felt like I could keep going for ever, I got to 2200 and I died only because I unfocused the game to rate it ^^ With special obstacles, or collectables, it would make a great game, the controls work really well and I like the graphics a lot !
Nice idea which having two different screens. Would have been great to tie them together somehow and not make it only time based. Your intro / "tutorial" was also a bit long.
Nice tutorial. I noticed that the camera goes beyond the player and you can get stuck behind. The mechanic is nice, you could add more elements to gameplay.
Love the art style and the pixle art! The idea of moving between screens isn't one I have seen before, unfortunately the forced tutorial that stops you every couple of seconds is really irritating, but otherwise I really liked it.
I thought this was really cool! I liked the way the tutorial was presented, it was an awesome moment when I drilled through to the left side to cool down. Enjoyed the dialogue and story, but having the drive button be the same as the dialogue button prevented me from reading a few lines. Also really liked the music. Great job!
interesting idea! wished that there was a little more of a challenge though, some more mechanics maybe also being able to turn your rig without moving would be nice
I love the dual screen gameplay style really great. It was a little confusing at first but then I got the hang of it. Some different objects and tiles would really round out the game. I got 1690m on my best attempt.
I like the concept, and the tutorial was well executed. Good call including the arcade mode as well.
Fun little game! I really liked the 2 side by side maps that you switched between! definitely a very nice mechanic to change it up! I ended up getting to 1000m before I stopped because it seemed like the same thing over and over without much difficulty increasing. would have loved to see something there, but overall game, art, and music very very enjoyable!
Fun idea, and some very funny dialogue. I wish it had not auto-advanced through it so often, as others said. Really cool graphics, intuitive controls. I sort of wanted there to be more to the game, but it was fun to dig around and blow stuff up. I liked the sound and music, too.
Switching between the two screens is a neat mechanic, and I liked that both modes controlled slightly differently.
The dialogue (and tutorial in general) was well done, especially the parts where the player gets kicked back to the title screen. I think I would have preferred if the gameplay hadn't paused while dialogue was showing, though -- I appreciate that timing things such that the player can read all the text *and* the gameplay can continue is non-trivial, but I think it would make the tutorial feel a lot smoother.
Great job!
Love the concept, really unique!! I also loved the little dialogue bits you added, they were a really nice little funny addition! I do wish there was maybe obstacles or collectibles that I had to deal with when digging, as I feel like that would have added an extra layer of challenge and made me think more about when I should dig over rather than just relying on the meters. My high score was 620 :) Awesome job!!
I really liked the idea of switching between land and water to balance your oxygen and temperature. I got to about 1200 before I resurfaced. I think an indicator sound when your oxygen is too low or temp too high would be nice. As you go deeper, the difficulty does increase because the number of blocks that you have to break are higher but maybe you can also increase the difficulty by "locking" the wall in between at certain points so you have to time your switches better. In the tutorial, I would suggest that you just show the text on top without having to click to continue so the game isn't interrupted and you don't accidentally hide the text. All in all, a really good game with scope for a bigger one. Good job!
Interesting concept! Catchy physics and sound effects. Nice graphics and music.
Some remarks: 1. It is hard to understand how much you need to dig right/left to switch vehicles. Expectation: you can see blocks from the other side to understand how much to dig. 2. Too much dialogs that pause the game. Expectation: dialogs appear while you move and that allow you to keep immersion.
Good entry!
Great idea with switching vehicles by drilling through the wall!
good gosh the dialogue is WAY too intrusive
@okaylobster @pennycook , @darqweful , @retrome , @infinitycore You all are right on the money there. I actually wanted to do a non-pausing dialogue system, but I had neglected to think about where it would be positioned on the screen. By the time I was implementing the tutorial (~3h before the compo ended) I had run out of time to rearrange the UI to accommodate for that. It's something I will definitely keep in mind for the future.
@feralpoodles Having little "weak spots" in the walls was the original plan. Unfortunately, the block generation was only barely implemented due to time. It's something that could have used a lot more love for sure!
Hi there! Just played your game and it's real fun! I really liked the comment and humor :) Graphics and music are good too. Great job!
I like it! Most people made either a diving game or a digging game, but you made both! The tutorial was funny and I had a good time playing in arcade mode. My only complaint would be that the controls are a bit awkward and not very responsive.
Wow the only ludum dare game I have rated 5/5 for everything It's funny and smart and overall amazing Great work!
Wow! Nice concept and good humor, I like it!
Made me laugh and the graphics were off the charts.
Cool game! Made it down to around 2000m. Most of what I have to say has already been said by others, and with compo constraints there wouldn't have been time for the last two, but to summarize my impressions:
Favorite parts: Funny dialogue, solid artwork, great take on the theme, fun/simple controls
Issues: -Dialogue and game movement being on the same key. The simplicity of all the controls being on click is nice so personally I would have kept that. Maybe having the player click a specific "Next" or arrow button so they don't accidently skip? Best of both worlds in my view. -A little more variety such as different obstacles or block types would go a long way. There may be issues with things like obstacles being outside of the players view while switching lanes, but I think suggestions from other commenters like a small preview of what's on the other side could help there and open up potential for new mechanics. Just a note, with time constraints I know that's hard! -Some more visual reinforcement that you're "going deeper" (like changes in background every 1000m) could go on long way in making the player feel rewarded for reaching greater depth thresholds.
That was a pretty great game with really fun graphics, theming and storytelling. For some feedback, I did find that the dialogues were a bit too intrusive, even though they contributed quite a bit to storytelling and immersion. I guess the issue was that I had to restart very often because I found it difficult to manage air and temperature... and each time I would have to go through the dialogues again. Beyond that, once again, great execution!
Infuriating that the popups occupied the same space as the game area and required a click to dismiss, the same click that was required to operate the vehicle. It just meant that the gameplay was irritatingly interrupted constantly. I wish I could say I played more of this because it did seem intriguing - balancing air and temperature, but alas this game-interrupting flaw made it too stressful. The art style was well done - you obviously have a talent for this pixel style. I'd love to try a version where you let the player actually play rather than continually interrupt them. Hopefully there's a version 2! Good luck with it! :)
This is so cool! I love the tutorial (super funny dialogue), and how the control mechanics provide innovative gameplay. I think I could play it for hours if there were some sort of meta-progression or unlocks. Is there an "ending"? I got to 1584m at my deepest attempt.
Thank you @pijamar ! There's no ending - the block generation gets a little more aggressive each 100m, but the end result fell way short of my original plan. It had been years since I had done a game jam, and I forgot what "scope" was.
[(There were lasers at one point)](https://imgur.com/s2CAoa4), but I disabled them because I didn't have time to make the sea monster and giant worm that I was planning haha.
Such a great entry, and so meditative (though I keep getting lost in breaking block I *eventually* forget to swap sides!
It might be nice if the screen would speed up a little if you get to the bottom (~2% or something), as I found I would happily sit there until it was time to swap.
There is so much room for growth in this idea - power ups, enemies, different levels of blocks etc - but understandable to get it done in 48 hours, this is solid!
Awesome work!
Nice polished graphics and graphical effects and it's awesome that you made time to included a tutorial!
I could see the game improving from more involved/complex gameplay since right now all I really can do is go downward while traversing between the diving area and drilling area over and over. Maybe to throw in a twist, the two areas could play/behave more differently or have unique things to watch out for. But seeing how you had only 48 hours to work with, adding unique mechanics between the two areas might have been too costly for time.
Regardless, good job getting the game done and overall done well. :)
Interesting idea. Great compo! really! The graphics are great, audio is good. And nice touch of humor. Good job!
I liked the concept a lot. However, I thought the tutorial wasn't necessarily too long, just had to click too many times to read through it. Maybe combine some of the text boxes into one window so there's 2-3 sentences instead of some of the ones with a single sentence. Graphics are very pretty, and I wish the miner would actually catch on fire instead of just the "You caught on fire" popup message
Nice work, especially for a compo game! The controls are extremely pleasing, and the overall experience is enjoyable. Somewhat lacks of challenge though. Also, I felt like the speed of the scrolling was maybe a little slow because I was almost always near the very bottom
Great concept! I really liked the tutorial dialogue. I would say that my only real annoyance was that from one side you couldn't really tell how thick the wall is to the other since the camera doesn't show the other side, so its hard to make meaningful decisions about when to cross over.
Very cool graphic, cool mood and atmosphere. Fun dialogs. Good work.
You combined the two most common takes on the theme and combined it into one, I love it! Very polished prototype, albeit a little bare-bones. The dialogue was a very nice touch to give a sense of progression. Looking forward to see how you can take this game further.
Interesting mechanic! I would have liked to have some upgrades as you progress deeper. I feel that at some point you just get the hang of it and it's not too much of a challenge to keep going on and on and on. Both the music and the art are superb! Very well done!
Hey! Very nice art style! I like the design of the digging/diving machine and its transformation animations. Dialogues are funny! I enjoyed playing this game a lot! Now, what I would improve... I clicked away a lot of dialogue boxes to quick, when the mouse cursor was in this area. I would like this game to had some sort of ending. I reached over 1300m and still nothing :) Besides that, fun game! Congrats!
Love it!!! Cute and funny dialogue with really charming art and great color coding for the different sides. The music was fun and well made! I could see it fit in a few diffeernt settings
Loved it!
Nice game! That take on the theme was really clever, and it makes for some interesting gameplay. Liked the overall polish with particle effects & nice audio. I think the game itself might lack a bit of challenge, but I really liked the concept and you already got a lot of stuff done in only 48 hours :D
One word: Genius
This is a fun concept and it is really well written, but I kind of wish that the dialogue didn't interrupt the action and came up a little faster. Maybe having it appear at the top while you are still able to play would be a nice solution. Its a clever idea, and I would like to see how far you can take it. Keep digging!
simple fun concept with a tutorial. what else can you ask for? nice game and it could easily grow. thanks for making it.
Great concept, graphics and narration ! But I wish the dialogues bubbles did not stop the game flow !
Nice movement ;two mechine are works well  but I really hate the dialoguus one by one by one by one :anger:
Dive and Dig
Before I started writing this comment, I was genuinely convinced this was a jam game at first, only to then notice this was a compo game when double-checking!
It's really well-polished, and I really enjoyed the first two playthroughs where you pretty much present the game as if they were two separate concepts, only to bring them together in the third playthrough in a genuinely humorous way. I think that's a pretty neat way to do it, especially with the Play buttons switching places each time!
Digging the blocks was pretty satisfying and the game was pretty easy to control overall! Balancing both the O2 and Temperature, especially as they start becoming depleting/filling faster was pretty satisfying, and I really like how you even went and added unique particles to each side and even transition animations to the _Dive & Dig_ when you switch sides! Pretty good stuff I'd say!
While I think that the depth highscore works perfectly fine, part of me wishes there was some sort of secondary objective to go along it. I'd really have liked to see the number of total blocks broken for example, to motivate you to min-max the number of blocks you break in one side before swapping other to the side, but I can understand this being a compo game that there was a limited time-frame to do everything.
Even then, this was a pretty fun game to give a shot to! Glad I had the chance to play it! Cheers! :whale:
@jorgegamedev Thank you for the extremely detailed feedback! I had so much more planned for this game, and had to cut almost all of it due to time. It was my first game jam in ~5 years, and I totally forgot how much time everything takes.
Nice game! but i feel as though I had no say in how the vehicle was going to be changed. in fact, it felt like even if I drove/dint drive, it wouldn't have made much of a difference?
A game that combines two interesting mechanics. Dialogues are cool, as are the graphics and the sound. I believe that gameplay is also very easy to understand. In general it is a nice experience. Congratulations.
